2. Triglyceride-glucose index predicts postoperative delirium in elderly patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus: a retrospective cohort study

Abstract Background Postoperative delirium (POD) is more prevalent among elderly patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Insulin resistance (IR) can be assessed using the triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index, a novel biomarker. This study aims to investigate the predictive potential of the TyG index for POD in elderly patients with T2DM. Materials and methods Elderly patients (≥ 65) with T2DM who underwent non-neurosurgery and non-cardiac surgery were enrolled. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were conducted to assess the association between the TyG index and POD. Additionally, subgroup analyses were performed to compare the sex-specific differences in the predictive ability of the TyG index for POD. Results A total of 4566 patients were included in this retrospective cohort. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis determined the optimal cut-off value for the TyG index to be 8.678. In the univariate model, a TyG index > 8.678 exhibited an odds ratio (OR) of 1.668 (95% CI: 1.210–2.324, P = 0.002) for predicting POD. 3. Treatment with β-sitosterol ameliorates the effects of cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury by suppressing cholesterol overload, endoplasmic reticulum stress, and apoptosis

[INLINE:1] β-Sitosterol is a type of phytosterol that occurs naturally in plants. Previous studies have shown that it has anti-oxidant, anti-hyperlipidemic, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, and anti-tumor effects, but it is unknown whether β-sitosterol treatment reduces the effects of ischemic stroke. Here we found that, in a mouse model of ischemic stroke induced by middle cerebral artery occlusion, β-sitosterol reduced the volume of cerebral infarction and brain edema, reduced neuronal apoptosis in brain tissue, and alleviated neurological dysfunction; moreover, β-sitosterol increased the activity of oxygen- and glucose-deprived cerebral cortex neurons and reduced apoptosis. Further investigation showed that the neuroprotective effects of β-sitosterol may be related to inhibition of endoplasmic reticulum stress caused by intracellular cholesterol accumulation after ischemic stroke. In addition, β-sitosterol showed high affinity for NPC1L1, a key transporter of cholesterol, and antagonized its activity. In conclusion, β-sitosterol may help treat ischemic stroke by inhibiting neuronal intracellular cholesterol overload/endoplasmic reticulum stress/apoptosis signaling pathways.

Abstract Background Postoperative delirium (POD) is a common complication in elderly patients after hip fracture surgery. Our study was to investigate whether intraoperative mean arterial pressure variability (MAPV) was associated with POD in elderly patients after hip fracture surgery. Methods In this retrospective cohort study, patients aged 65 years and older undergoing hip fracture surgery were included. The correlation between MAPV and POD was investigated using univariate and multivariate logistic regression. Covariate-related confounding effects were eliminated with propensity score matching (PSM) analysis. Then, a subgroup analysis was conducted to further examine the associations between MAPV and POD. Results Nine hundred sixty-three patients with a median age of 80 years (IQR: 73–84) were enrolled. POD occurred in 115/963 (11.9%) patients within 7 days after surgery. Abstract Background To investigate the ideal trajectory for the S2AI screw and to clinically validate its safety feasibility. Methods The 3D model was reconstructed from CT data of the pelvis of 30 selected adults, and the 3D coordinate system was established with the first sacral superior endplate as the horizontal plane. A set of cutting planes was made at 3 mm intervals in the coronal plane, and the cross-sectional internal tangent circles were divided in the target area. Using the linear fitting function, the axis of 90 mm length was calculated by the least squares method for each inner tangent circle center. The diameter of the axis is gradually increased until the first contact with the cortex, and the cylindrical model is the ideal screw trajectory. The intersection of the axis and the dorsal cortex is the screw placement point, which is located by Horizon Distance (HD) and Vertical Distance (VD); the diameter of the screw trajectory (d) is the diameter of the cylindrical model; the direction of the screw trajectory is determined by Sagittal Angle (SA) and Transverse Angle (TA). The screw trajectory orientation is determined by Sagittal Angle (SA) and Transverse Angle (TA). Based on the ideal screw trajectory, the 3D printed surgical guide and freehand techniques were used to verify its safety feasibility, respectively. Results The screw placement points [HD (4.7 ± 1.0) mm, VD (19.7 ± 1.9) mm], screw placement directions [SA (31.3°±2.3°), TA (42.4°±2.3°)], and screw dimensions for the ideal screw trajectory of the S2AI were combined for analysis. (L is 90 mm, d is 13.2 ± 1.4 mm). The S2AI screw superiority rate [96.6% (56/58)] and reasonable rate [100%] were higher in the guide group than in the freehand group [90.0% (63/70), 97.1% (68/70)], but the differences were not statistically significant (P > 0.05). Although screws invaded the cortex in both groups, there were no associated adverse events in either group. Conclusion The S2AI screw-based ideal trajectory placement is a safe, feasible and accurate method of screw placement.

The presence of brominated flame retardants (BFRs) in foodstuffs of African origin is poorly understood. To fill this gap, animal-derived food samples comprising 13 different items originally from Nigeria were obtained in 2021, and concentrations of novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), and hexabromocyclododecane (HBCDD) were measured. Mitochondria-associated membrane (MAM) serve as crucial contact sites between mitochondria and the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). Recent research has highlighted the significance of MAM, which serve as a platform for various protein molecules, in processes such as calcium signaling, ATP production, mitochondrial structure and function, and autophagy. Cardiac diseases caused by any reason can lead to changes in myocardial structure and function, significantly impacting human health. Notably, MAM exhibits various regulatory effects to maintain cellular balance in several cardiac diseases conditions, such as obesity, diabetes mellitus, and cardiotoxicity. MAM proteins independently or interact with their counterparts, forming essential tethers between the ER and mitochondria in cardiomyocytes. This review provides an overview of key MAM regulators, detailing their structure and functions. Additionally, it explores the connection between MAM and various cardiac injuries, suggesting that precise genetic, pharmacological, and physical regulation of MAM may be a promising strategy for preventing and treating heart failure.

Hypertension constitutes a pervasive chronic ailment on a global scale, frequently inflicting damage upon vital organs, such as the heart, blood vessels, kidneys, brain, and others. And this is a complex clinical dilemma that requires immediate attention. The mitochondria assume a crucial function in the generation of energy, and it is of utmost importance to eliminate any malfunctioning or surplus mitochondria to uphold intracellular homeostasis. Mitophagy is considered a classic example of selective autophagy, an important component of mitochondrial quality control, and is closely associated with many physiological and pathological processes. The ubiquitin-dependent pathway, facilitated by PINK1/Parkin, along with the ubiquitin-independent pathway, orchestrated by receptor proteins such as BNIP3, NIX, and FUNDC1, represent the extensively investigated mechanisms underlying mitophagy. In recent years, research has increasingly shown that mitophagy plays an important role in organ damage associated with hypertension. Exploring the molecular mechanisms of mitophagy in hypertension-mediated organ damage could represent a critical avenue for future research in the development of innovative therapeutic modalities. Therefore, this article provides a comprehensive review of the impact of mitophagy on organ damage due to hypertension.

11. Enhanced in situ production of Fenton reagent's by nanobubble aeration and sacrificial iron anodes in the electro-Fenton process

Wastewater treatment is currently focused on the development of simple, safe, cost-effective technologies for the complete destruction of persistent organic pollutants. A novel reagent-free electro-Fenton process by integrated nano-bubble aeration and sacrificial iron anode is proposed, which improves mass transferability of large content dissolved oxygen (10.55mgL−1) in the electrolyte and then quickly transported oxygen to the electrode surface. The synergistic effect of nanobubble aeration and sacrificial iron anodes can product a highly efficient hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) (310 mgL−1) and enhanced electrochemically driven reduction of Fe2+ at pH 3.5 and current density 55 mAcm−2. The degradation of phenol (100 mgL−1) with hydroxyl radicals (⋅OH) generated in situ is described by a pseudo first-order kinetics mode and was fast (0.036 min−1), which obtained a remarkable decolorization of over 58.7 % in 60 min. With nanobubble aeration and sacrificial iron anode, the catalytic decomposition of H2O2 to ⋅OH by Fe2+ was more powerful, achieving a cost-effective and green design without reagents.

Abstract Introduction Ferroptosis has recently been recognized as a new cause of ischemia reperfusion injury due to blood–brain barrier (BBB) disruption followed by secondary iron‐loaded transferrin (TF) influx. As a novel and independent cell death pathway, ferroptosis was characterized by iron‐dependent lipid peroxidation, decline of GSH, GPX4, and shrinking mitochondria. Cottonseed oil (CSO), a liposoluble solvent, can alleviate ischemia stroke injuries and oxidative stress. However, the effect of CSO on ischemic stroke–induced ferroptosis has not been explored. In this study, we investigated the effect of CSO on ferroptosis caused by cerebral ischemic injury in rats. Methods We conducted the subcutaneous injection of 1.3 mL/kg CSO every other day for 3 weeks on rats with middle cerebral artery occlusion–reperfusion (MCAO‐R) injury. We used Garcia Test, TTC staining, HE, Nissl and NeuN staining, Evans blue test, 68Ga‐citrate PET, Western blot, immunofluorescence staining, Elisa kits, and transmission electron microscopy to detect the infarct volume, neural injuries, and ferroptosis‐related indexes. Results CSO treatment could significantly ameliorate MCAO‐R‐induced neurological dysfunction in a male rat model. Furthermore, it reduced infarct volume and neuronal injuries; protected BBB integrity; reduced the influx of iron ion, TF, and TF receptors; up‐regulated anti‐ferroptosis proteins (GPX4, xCT, HO1, FTH1), while down‐regulating ferroptosis‐related protein ACSL4; increased the activity of GSH and SOD; and decreased MDA and LPO levels. Mitochondrial destruction induced by ischemic stroke was also alleviated by CSO treatment. Conclusion CSO treatment can alleviate ischemic stroke injury via ferroptosis inhibition, which provides a new potential therapeutic mechanism for CSO neuroprotection against ischemic stroke.

Dexamethasone (Dex) is a type of glucocorticoid drug. Long term use can induce growth plate chondrocytes (GPCs) apoptosis, impair differentiation, and inhibit cell proliferation and bone growth. It has been reported that Krüppel-like factor 2 (KLF2) inhibits osteoblast damage induced by Dex, but the role in Dex-induced GPCs remains unclear. Dex was used to construct a model of growth plate injury in vitro. CCK-8 and TUNEL kits were used to determine cell viability and apoptosis. A model of growth plate injury was established by intraperitoneal injection of Dex. Immunohistochemistry was used to investigate the expression of KLF2 in rats. The results showed that KLF2 expression of rat tibial GPCs was down-regulated after Dex stimulation. Overexpression of KLF2 promoted cell viability and cell cycle, while inhibited apoptosis of growth plate Dex-induced chondrocytes. Moreover, KLF2 inhibited Runx2-mediated PI3K/AKT and ERK signalling pathways. And PI3K/AKT and ERK signalling pathways, which were involved in the regulation of KLF2 on GPCs. Further studies showed that KLF2 alleviated growth plate injury in vivo. In conclusion, our study found that KLF2 promoted proliferation and inhibited apoptosis of Dex-induced GPCs by targeting the Runx2-mediated PI3K/AKT and ERK signalling pathways.

15. Pulmonary delivery of resveratrol-β-cyclodextrin inclusion complexes for the prevention of zinc chloride smoke-induced acute lung injury

Smoke bombs are often used in military/fire training, which can produce a large amount of zinc chloride (ZnCl2) smoke. Inhalation of ZnCl2 smoke usually causes acute lung injury (ALI) that would likely develop to acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). However, there is no effective prevention or treatment strategy for the smoke-induced ALI. Resveratrol (RES) is a natural polyphenol with good anti-inflammatory and anti-apoptotic activities, but its low solubility, stability, and bioavailability restrict its clinical application. In this study, an inhalable RES formulation composed of RES-β-cyclodextrin inclusion complexes (RES-β-CD) was prepared for the prevention of ZnCl2 smoke-induced ALI. RES-β-CD powders had a small mass median aerodynamic diameter of 3.61 μm and a high fine particle fraction of 38.84%, suitable for pulmonary inhalation. RES-β-CD exhibited low BEAS-2B cytotoxicity. Pulmonary delivery of RES-β-CD to mice remarkably prevented the smoke-induced ALI with downregulation of TNF-α, IL-1β, STAT3, and GATA3, and upregulation of T-bet and Foxp3. RES-β-CD protected the respiratory function, percutaneous oxygen saturation, physical activity, lung capillary integrity, and lung liquid balance, alleviating inflammation and apoptosis. Pulmonary delivery of the positive drug, budesonide (BUD), also alleviated the smoke-induced ALI by reduction of inflammation and cell apoptosis. RES-β-CD exhibited the regulation of the Th1/Th2 and Treg/Th17 balances, while BUD did not show any effect on immune balances. In conclusion, pulmonary delivery of RES-β-CD is a promising anti-inflammatory and anti-apoptosis strategy for the prevention of ZnCl2 smoke-induced ALI by direct lung drug distribution and regulation of immune balance.

16. Comparison of individual versus ensemble wind farm parameterizations inclusive of sub‐grid wakes for the WRF model

Abstract Wind turbine wakes can be predicted somewhat accurately with mesoscale numerical models, such as the Weather Research and Forecast (WRF) model, via a wind farm parameterization (WFP) that treats the effects of the wakes, which are sub‐grid features, on power production and the environment. A few WFPs have been proposed in the literature, but none has been able to properly account for the individual wakes within a grid cell or the effects of overlapping wakes from multiple turbines. A solution to these two issues is a WFP that includes both a wake model, which is a simplified analytical model of the wind speed (or wind power) deficit caused by a wake, and a wake superposition model, which accounts for overlapping wakes. Several such WFPs are developed here for the WRF model—based on the Jensen, the Geometric, and the Gaussian wake models coupled with two wake superposition methods (based on a squared deficit and a squared velocity superposition)—and tested individually, as well as combined together in an ensemble (EWFP), at two modern offshore wind farms. Most WFPs perform satisfactorily alone, but the EWFP generally outperforms them at both farms. The issue of resolved versus sub‐grid wakes is explored for single‐ and multi‐cell cases and for directions of alignment and non‐alignment between the wind direction and the turbine columns. Although different combinations of wake loss and wake superposition models might be preferred at other wind farms, the general findings and detailed performance statistics given here might provide useful guidance in their selection.

It is unclear whether the systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) can be a predictor of POD. We explored the prognostic value of the SII in predicting POD in elderly patients undergoing non-neurosurgery and non-cardiac surgery in a large retrospective cohort. Methods We enrolled elderly patients undergoing non-neurosurgery and non-cardiac surgery between January 2014 and August 2019. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to explore the correlation between POD and the SII value as both a continuous and categorical variable. Then, propensity score matching (PSM) analysis was applied to eliminate the confounding effect of covariates and prove our results. Subgroup analyses were then performed to discover the association between the SII and POD in different subgroups. Results A total of 29,608 patients with a median age of 70 years (IQR: 67–74) were enrolled in the retrospective cohort. The cut-off value of the SII was 650, which was determined by the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. Abstract Background Metabolic dysregulation and disruption of immune homeostasis have been widely associated with perioperative complications including perioperative ischemic stroke. Although immunometabolite S-2-hydroxyglutarate (S-2HG) is an emerging regulator of immune cells and thus triggers the immune response, it is unclear whether and how S-2HG elicits perioperative ischemic brain injury and exacerbates post-stroke cognitive dysfunction. Methods Perioperative ischemic stroke was induced by transient middle cerebral artery occlusion for 60 min in C57BL/6 mice 1 day after ileocecal resection. CD8+ T lymphocyte activation and invasion of the cerebrovascular compartment were measured using flow cytometry. Untargeted metabolomic profiling was performed to detect metabolic changes in sorted CD8+ T lymphocytes after ischemia. CD8+ T lymphocytes were transfected with lentivirus ex vivo to mobilize cell proliferation and differentiation before being transferred into recombination activating gene 1 (Rag1−/−) stroke mice. Results The perioperative stroke mice exhibit more severe cerebral ischemic injury and neurological dysfunction than the stroke-only mice. CD8+ T lymphocyte invasion of brain parenchyma and neurotoxicity augment cerebral ischemic injury in the perioperative stroke mice. CD8+ T lymphocyte depletion reverses exacerbated immune-mediated cerebral ischemic brain injury in perioperative stroke mice. Perioperative ischemic stroke triggers aberrant metabolic alterations in peripheral CD8+ T cells, in which S-2HG is more abundant. S-2HG alters CD8+ T lymphocyte proliferation and differentiation ex vivo and modulates the immune-mediated ischemic brain injury and post-stroke cognitive dysfunction by enhancing CD8+ T lymphocyte-mediated neurotoxicity. Conclusion Our study establishes that S-2HG signaling-mediated activation and neurotoxicity of CD8+ T lymphocytes might exacerbate perioperative ischemic brain injury and may represent a promising immunotherapy target in perioperative ischemic stroke.

A new polydopamine-functionalized titanium dioxide nano/submicro-particles (PDA@TiO2NPs) coating was successfully constructed on the surface of NiTi substrate as a solid-phase microextraction (SPME) fiber. To obtain a stable and uniform PDA@TiO2NPs coating, the NiTi fiber was hydrothermally treated for in situ growth of titanium/nickel oxide composite nanosheets (TiNiOCNSs). Subsequently, the titanium dioxide nano/submicro-particles (TiO2NPs) were electrophoretically deposited on the TiNiOCNSs coating. Finally, the polydopamine (PDA) coating was modified on the TiO2NPs coating by self-polymerization of dopamine (DA). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of the new PDA@TiO2NPs@TiNiOCNSs@NiTi fiber showed a popcornlike nanostructure with a larger surface area and more adsorption sites. Benefitting from the abundant hydrogen bonding, rich π-electron system, and strong hydrophobicity, the functionalized PDA@TiO2NPs@TiNiOCNSs@NiTi fiber illustrated excellent extraction capability for benzotriazole ultraviolet filters (BUvFs) among typical aromatic compounds coupled to HPLC with UV detection. The main SPME conditions such as extraction and desorption time, extraction temperature, stirring rate, and ionic strength were examined and optimized one by one. Under the optimum conditions, the calibration curves presented good linearity for BUvFs in the ranges from 0.01 µg·L−1 to 300 µg·L−1, and the correlation coefficients (r) were above 0.9990. The limits of detection (LODs, S/N = 3) were between 0.005 µg·L−1 and 0.043 µg·L−1. RSD repeatability of intraday and interday for one fiber was less than 5.3% and 6.9%, respectively. Moreover enrichment factors (EFs) ranged from 63 to 218. The recommended method can completely extract and detect trace BUvFs in different environmental water samples. Furthermore, the new fiber shows good stability and high strength.

21. The efficacy of ginseng-containing traditional Chinese medicine in patients with acute decompensated heart failure: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of ginseng-containing traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for acute decompensated heart failure (ADHF).Methods: Seven databases were included from establishment until 10 July 2022. Pooled data were analyzed with random-effects model. The risk of bias was measured by the risk of bias tool for randomized trials (RoB 2). Modified Jadad scale score was used to assess the quality of including studies. The meta-analysis was performed with RevMan 5.3. Trial sequential analysis was assessed to avoid type I errors. We have registered our protocol in PROSPERO (CRD42021267742).Results: Twenty-eight articles were included. The results demonstrated that compared with conventional western therapy (WT), ginseng-containing TCM combined with WT further improved clinical efficacy (RR: 1.25, 95% CI: 1.20–1.29, p < 0.00001, I2 = 8%), left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) (MD: 5.80, 95% CI: 4.86–6.74, p < 0.00001, I2 = 89%), stroke volume (MD: 13.80, 95% CI: 12.66–14.95, p < 0.00001, I2 = 93%), 6-min walk test (MD: 53.03, 95% CI: 20.76–85.29, p = 0.001, I2 = 97%), decreased 6-month rehospitalization (RR: 0.44, 95% CI: 0.18–1.11, p = 0.08, I2 = 0%), brain natriuretic peptide (MD: 188.12, 95% CI: 248.13 to -128.11, p < 0.00001, I2 = 94%), N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (MD = -503.29; 95% CI: 753.18 to -253.40, p < 0.0001, I2 = 89%) and Minnesota living heart failure questionnaire scores (MD: 9.68, 95% CI: 13.67 to -5.70, p < 0.00001, I2 = 83%). The ROB2 assessment and modified Jaded scores showed most studies included were with some concerns.Conclusion: Compared with WT alone, ginseng-containing TCM is a possible way to benefit ADHF patients. However, limited by the quality of including trials, more high-quality studies are needed to provide reliable evidence.

ObjectiveThis study aims to explore the association between the frailty index and chronic heart failure (CHF).MethodsWe collected data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) (1998–2018) database to assess the association between CHF and frailty. Demographic, inquiry, laboratory examinations, and characteristics were gathered to compare CHF and non-CHF groups. Multiple logistic regression analysis was performed to explore the relationship between frailty and CHF. Cox proportional hazards models were used to estimate hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for mortality from all causes and cardiovascular disease (CVD).ResultsA total of 16,175 participants with cardiac and cerebrovascular disease were categorized into CHF (n = 1,125) and non-CHF (n = 15,050) groups. In patients with CHF, the prevalence of frailty, pre-frailty, and non-frailty were 66.31, 30.93, and 2.75%, respectively. In multiple logistic regression, patients with CHF who were male (OR = 0.63, 95% CI: 3.11–5.22), whose annual family income was over $20,000 (OR = 0.52, 95% CI: 0.37–0.72, p < 0.001), or with normal hemoglobin level (OR = 0.77, 95% CI: 0.68–0.88, P < 0.001) had a lower likelihood of frailty. CHF patients with hypertension (OR = 3.60, 95% CI: 2.17–5.99, P < 0.0001), coronary heart disease (OR = 1.76, 95% CI: 1.10–2.84, P = 0.02), diabetes mellitus (OR = 1.89, 95% CI: 1.28–2.78, P < 0.001), and stroke (OR = 2.52, 95% CI: 1.53–4.15, P < 0.001) tended to be frail. Survival analysis suggested that pre-frailty and frailty were related to poor all-cause deaths (HR = 1.48, 95% CI: 1.36–1.66; HR = 2.77, 95% CI: 2.40–3.18) and CVD mortality (HR = 1.58, 95% CI: 1.26–1.97; HR = 2.55, 95% CI: 2.02–3.21). CHF patients with frailty were strongly connected with all-cause death (HR = 2.14, 95% CI: 1.27–3.62).ConclusionFrailty was positively associated with CHF. Patients with CHF who were male, whose annual family income was over $20,000, or with normal hemoglobin level were negatively correlated to frailty. For patients with cardiac and cerebrovascular disease as well as CHF, frailty was strongly connected with all-cause death.

Abstract Spent methanol-to-propylene (MTP) catalysts have a large specific surface area and high porosity but are usually disposed of in landfills directly, and recycling has rarely been reported. In this study, the spent MTP catalyst was moderately dealuminized with organic acids and etched with alkali solvent to increase its specific surface area, further silanized by octyl triethoxy silane (OTS). A novel superhydrophobic adsorbent covered with –Si(CH2)7CH3 groups was obtained. The characterization of XRD, SEM, FTIR and XPS shows that the adsorbent maintains a typical ZSM-5 zeolite structure, and the –Si(CH2)7CH3 group is successfully grafted into the sample, not only on the surface but also in some pore space. Taking high chemical oxygen demand (COD) wastewater as the object, the influence of contract time, pH and temperature on COD removal was investigated. The removal process could be better depicted by the Langmuir isotherm model and the pseudo second-order dynamic model. Furthermore, the results of the thermodynamic study (∆G is − 79.35 kJ/mol, ∆S is 423.68 J/mol K, and ∆H is 46.91 kJ/mol) show that the adsorption was a spontaneous and endothermic process. These findings indicate that the modified spent MTP catalyst has potential application for the removal of COD from wastewater.

The effects of secondary passivation on the electrochemical behavior of passive films on the surface of 2205 duplex stainless steel were studied by potentiodynamic polarization, EIS and Mott–Schottky analysis. The composition and surface morphology of the passive film were analyzed by ICP-MS, ARXPS and SEM. These results manifested that the passive film formed by secondary passivation has good pitting resistance, due to the increase of the content of oxidized Fe3+, Cr3+ and Mo4+ in the passive film, which improves and increases the dissolution and migration rate of metal cations in the passive film, thus improving the compactness and stability of the passive film. The Mott–Schottky plots demonstrated that the five kinds of passive films have different semiconductor properties. The estimated doping density shows that the donor density of the passive film was significantly reduced by secondary passivation. In addition, Cl− and SO42− are permeated in the passivation layer and their adsorption on the surface of the passive film can be inhibited by the secondary passivation.

BackgroundDiabetes mellitus (DM) has been reported to be associated with perioperative stroke, but the effects of preoperative hyperglycemia on the risk of perioperative stroke in diabetic patients undergoing non-cardiovascular surgery remain unclear. This study investigated the association between preoperative hyperglycemia and the risk of perioperative ischemic stroke in type 2 diabetic patients undergoing non-cardiovascular surgery.MethodsThis retrospective cohort study screened 27,002 patients with type 2 DM undergoing non-cardiovascular surgery with general anesthesia between January 2008 and August 2019 at The First Medical Center of Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) General Hospital. The exposure of interest was preoperative hyperglycemia, defined as a fasting plasma glucose (FPG) ≥ 7 mmol/L. The outcome of interest was a new diagnosis of perioperative ischemic stroke within 30 days after surgery. Residual confounding was minimized by controlling for observable patient and intraoperative factors. Logistic regression was conducted in the total and propensity score matched cohorts. In addition, we stratified patients into six subgroups to investigate whether the association between preoperative hyperglycemia and perioperative ischemic stroke differs in these subgroups.ResultsThe overall incidence of perioperative ischemic stroke was 0.53% (n = 144) in the current cohort. The odds of perioperative ischemic stroke were significantly increased for patients with preoperative hyperglycemia after adjusting for patient- related variables (OR: 1.95; 95% CI: 1.39–2.75; p < 0.001), surgery-related variables (OR: 2.1; 95% CI: 1.51–2.94; p < 0.001), and all confounding variables (OR: 1.78; 95% CI: 1.26–2.53; p < 0.001). The risk of perioperative stroke was significantly increased in patients with preoperative hyperglycemia (OR: 2.51; 95% CI: 1.66–3.9; p < 0.001) in the propensity score matched cohort. Preoperative hyperglycemia was associated with the outcome for all the subgroups except for patients undergoing neurosurgery.ConclusionPreoperative hyperglycemia is associated with an elevated risk of perioperative stroke in patients with type 2 DM undergoing non-cardiovascular surgery. The effect could be eliminated for patients undergoing neurosurgery, during which specific risk factors should be considered.

27. Eddy Covariance CO2 Flux Gap Filling for Long Data Gaps: A Novel Framework Based on Machine Learning and Time Series Decomposition

Continuous long-term eddy covariance (EC) measurements of CO2 fluxes (NEE) in a variety of terrestrial ecosystems are critical for investigating the impacts of climate change on ecosystem carbon cycling. However, due to a number of issues, approximately 30–60% of annual flux data obtained at EC flux sites around the world are reported as gaps. Given that the annual total NEE is mostly determined by variations in the NEE data with time scales longer than one day, we propose a novel framework to perform gap filling in NEE data based on machine learning (ML) and time series decomposition (TSD). The novel framework combines the advantages of ML models in predicting NEE with meteorological and environmental inputs and TSD methods in extracting the dominant varying trends in NEE time series. Using the NEE data from 25 AmeriFlux sites, the performance of the proposed framework is evaluated under four different artificial scenarios with gap lengths ranging in length from one hour to two months. The combined approach incorporating random forest and moving average (MA-RF) is observed to exhibit better performance than other approaches at filling NEE gaps in scenarios with different gap lengths. For the scenario with a gap length of seven days, the MA-RF improves the R2 by 34% and reduces the root mean square error (RMSE) by 55%, respectively, compared to a traditional RF-based model. The improved performance of MA-RF is most likely due to the reduction in data variability and complexity of the variations in the extracted low-frequency NEE data. Our results indicate that the proposed MA-RF framework can provide improved gap filling for NEE time series. Such improved continuous NEE data can enhance the accuracy of estimations regarding the ecosystem carbon budget.

The L-shell dielectronic and trielectronic recombinations of highly charged Mg-like gold ions (Au67+) in the ground state 2s22p63s2 1S0 have been studied systematically. The recombination cross-sections and rate coefficients are carefully calculated for ∆n = 1 (2s/2p → 3l) transitions using a flexible atomic code based on the relativistic configuration interaction method and considering the Breit and QED corrections. Detailed resonance energies and resonance strengths are presented for the stronger resonances of the LMn (n = 3–12) series. It is found that the contributions of the trielectronic recombination to the total cross-section is about 13.75%, which cannot be neglected. For convenience of application, the plasma rate coefficients are also calculated and fitted to a semiempirical formula, and in the calculations, the contributions from the higher excited resonance groups n ≥ 13 are evaluated by an extrapolation method, which is about 2.93% of the total rate coefficient.

BackgroundAlthough a variety of data showing that diabetes mellitus (DM) (Type 1 or Type 2) is associated with postoperative complication, there is still a lack of detailed studies that go through the specific diabetic subgroups. The goal of this meta-analysis is to assess the relationship between DM and various complications after non-cardiac surgery.MethodsWe searched articles published in three mainstream electronic databases (PubMed, EMBASE, Web of science) before November, 2020. A random effects model was conducted since heterogeneity always exist when comparing results between different types of surgery.ResultsThis paper included 125 studies with a total sample size of 3,208,776 participants. DM was a risk factor for any postoperative complication (Odds ratio (OR)=1.653 [1.487, 1.839]). The risk of insulin-dependent DM (OR=1.895 [1.331, 2.698]) was higher than that of non-insulin-dependent DM (OR=1.554 [1.061, 2.277]) for any postoperative complication. DM had a higher risk of infections (OR=1.537 [1.322, 1.787]), wound healing disorders (OR=2.010 [1.326, 3.046]), hematoma (OR=1.369 [1.120, 1.673]), renal insufficiency (OR=1.987 [1.311, 3.013]), myocardial infarction (OR=1.372 [0.574, 3.278]). Meanwhile, DM was a risk factor for postoperative reoperation (OR=1.568 [1.124, 2.188]), readmission (OR=1.404 [1.274, 1.548]) and death (OR=1.606 [1.178, 2.191]).ConclusionsDM is a risk factor for any postoperative complications, hospitalization and death after non-cardiac surgery. These findings underscore the importance of preoperative risk factor assessment of DM for the safe outcome of surgical patients.

Propensity score matching (PSM) analysis was further applied to address the potential residual confounding effect of covariates to examine the robustness of our results.ResultsAmong the 40,670 included patients with a median age of 70 years (interquartile range: 67, 74), 237 (0.58%) experienced an ischemic stroke within 30 days after surgery. SII ≥ 583 was associated with an increased risk of perioperative ischemic stroke in multivariate regression analysis [odds ratio (OR), 1.843; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.369–2.480; P < 0.001]. After PSM adjustment, all covariates were well balanced between the two groups. The correlation between the SII and perioperative ischemic stroke remained significantly robust (OR: 2.195; 95% CI: 1.574–3.106; P < 0.001) in the PSM analysis.ConclusionPreoperative SII, which includes neutrophil, platelet, and lymphocyte counts obtained from routine blood analysis, was a potential prognostic biomarker for predicting perioperative ischemic stroke after non-cardiac surgery in older patients. An elevated SII, based on an optimal cut-off value of 583, was an independent risk factor for perioperative ischemic stroke.

Abstract Anxiety and depression are common mental illness in stroke caregivers, resulting in significant stress to the emotion health of caregivers. Caregivers’ emotion can seriously affect the recovery rate of stroke patient, therefore, how to control and affect the caregivers’ anxiety and depression is of great importance. Here three multiple centers observation and validation study were performed to screen out the risk factors for development of anxiety and depression in main family caregiver, and the effect of anxiety and depression of family caregivers on 6-month mortality of patients with moderate-severe stroke. The severity of the stroke, the duration of care time and the medical payment associated with increased risk of anxiety and depression. Anxiety and depression of main family caregivers are associated with increased risk 6-month mortality of patients with moderate-severe stroke. Therefore, the support provided to the family caregivers might have positive effect on prognosis of the patients with stroke.

33. Performance of a Hybrid Gain Ensemble Data Assimilation Scheme in Tropical Cyclone Forecasting with the GRAPES Model

Hybrid data assimilation (DA) methods have received extensive attention in the field of numerical weather prediction. In this study, a hybrid gain data assimilation (HGDA) method that combined the gain matrices of ensemble and variational methods was first applied in the mesoscale version of the Global/Regional Assimilation and Prediction System (GRAPES_Meso). To evaluate the performance of the HGDA method in the GRAPES_Meso model, different DA schemes, including the three-dimensional variational (3DVAR), local ensemble transform Kalman filter (LETKF), and HGDA schemes, were compared across eight tropical cyclone (TC) cases, and FY-4A atmospheric motion vectors were assimilated. The results indicated that the HYBRID scheme outperformed the 3DVAR and LETKF schemes in TC position forecasting, and with ensemble forecasting techniques, the HYBRID scheme promoted the accuracy of the prediction TC intensity. The threat score (TS) values for the light and medium precipitation forecasts obtained in the HYBRID experiment were higher than those for the forecasts obtained in the 3DVAR and LETKF experiments, which may be attributed to the forecasting accuracy for the TC position. Regarding heavy and extreme rainfall, the HYBRID scheme achieved a more stable effect than those of the 3DVAR and LETKF schemes. The results demonstrated the superiority of the HGDA scheme in TC prediction with the GRAPES_Meso model.

Abstract Perovskite solar cells are used in silicon-based tandem solar cells due to their tunable band gap, high absorption coefficient and low preparation cost. However, the relatively large optical refractive index of bottom silicon, in comparison with that of top perovskite absorber layers, results in significant reflection losses in two-terminal devices. Therefore, light management is crucial to improve photocurrent absorption in the Si bottom cell. In this paper, nanoholes array filled with TiO2 is introduced into bottom cells design. By finite-difference time-domain methods, the absorption efficiency and photocurrent density in the range of 300–1100 nm has been analyzed, and the structural parameters have been also optimized. Our calculations show the photocurrent density which tends to be saturated with the increase in the height of the nanoholes. The absorption enhancement modes of photons at different wavelengths have been analyzed intuitively by the distribution of electric field. These results enable a viable and convenient route toward high efficiency design of perovskite/Si tandem solar cells.

Abstract Background To compare the safety and accuracy of the 3D-printed operation guide template technique and the free-hand technique in the placement of the S2-alar-iliac (S2AI) screw. Methods We conducted a retrospective analysis of 47 patients undergoing S2AI screw placement in our hospital, divided into the 3D-printed operation guide template group and the free-hand screw placement group. The duration of single S2AI screw placement was documented in all patients. A postoperative CT scan was performed to assess screw placement effectiveness according to the distance from the screw tip to the breach of the cortical bone wall. Results In total, 42 screws were placed in the guide template group, with an average screw placement duration of 151.6 ± 44.8 s. Screw placement grading was as follows: 40 screws in grade 0, two in grade 1, and none in grades 2 and 3. This grading resulted in excellent and good rates of 95.2% and 100%, respectively. In total, 52 screws were placed in the free-hand group, with an average screw placement duration of 138.3 ± 45.9 s. Screw placement grading was as follows: 42 screws in grade 0, seven in grade 1, three in grade 2, and none in grade 3. This grading resulted in excellent, good and acceptable rates 80.8%, 94.2% and 100%, respectively. Screw placement duration did not significantly differ between the groups (p > 0.05). The excellent rate of screw placement was greater in the guide template group than in the free-hand group (p 0.05). Conclusion Both techniques can be applied to S2AI screw placement. The 3D-printed guide technique is superior to the free-hand technique in terms of safety and accuracy.

Objective: Diabetes mellitus (DM) has been critically associated with unfavorable outcomes in the general population. We aimed to investigate the association between type 2 DM and long-term survival outcomes for postoperative ischemic stroke in patients who underwent non-cardiac surgery.Research Design and Methods: This was a retrospective cohort study of patients with non-cardiac surgery who had suffered from postoperative ischemic stroke between January 2008 and August 2019. Diabetic individuals were included in postoperative ischemic stroke patients with the DM group. The outcome of interest was long-term overall survival (OS). We conducted propensity score matching (PSM) and inverse probability treatment weighting (IPTW) to adjust for baseline characteristic differences between groups. Multivariate Cox regression analysis with stepwise selection was used to calculate the adjusted hazard ratio (HR) of OS and type 2 DM.Results: During a median follow-up of 46.2 month [interquartile range (IQR), 21.1, 84.2], 200 of 408 patients (49.0%) died. The OS rates at 3, 5, and 10 years were significantly lower for postoperative ischemic stroke patients with DM than those without DM (3 years OS: 52.2 vs. 69.5%, p < 0.001; 5 years OS: 41.6 vs. 62.4%, p < 0.001; 10 years OS: 37.2 vs. 56.6%, p < 0.001). All covariates were between-group balanced after using PSM or IPTW. The postoperative ischemic stroke patients with type 2 DM had a shortened OS in primary analysis (HR: 1.947; 95% CI: 1.397–2.713; p < 0.001), PSM analysis (HR: 2.190; 95% CI: 1.354–3.540; p = 0.001), and IPTW analysis (HR: 2.551; 95% CI: 1.769–3.679; p < 0.001).Conclusion: Type 2 DM was associated with an unfavorable survival outcome for postoperative ischemic stroke in patients who underwent non-cardiac surgery. When postoperative ischemic stroke co-occurred with type 2 DM, the potential synergies would have multiplicative mortality risk. Further research to assess the adverse effects of type 2 DM on long-term survival may be warranted.

Abstract Background Ischemic stroke is the second leading cause of death globally. The narrow time window for administering effective thrombolytic therapy motivates the search for alternative prevention strategies. Microglia and astrocyte activation-mediated inflammation play a pivotal role in ischemic stroke injury. Cottonseed oil (CSO) has been shown to exert anti-inflammatory effects against peripheral tissue injury, although CSO is mostly used as a solvent for lipid-soluble drugs. However, the role of CSO in neuroprotection against stroke has not been previously reported. Methods We treated adult male rats with CSO (1.3 ml/kg, subcutaneous injection, once every other day for 3 weeks) and then constructed a middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) model followed by 24 h of reperfusion. Then, we measured the neurological scores, infarction volume, neuronal injury, and brain edema; we also measured the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α), degree of microglial and astrocytic activation, protein expression levels of Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4), nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB), C3d and S100A10, and the presence of A1 type astrocytes and A2 type astrocytes. Results We found that CSO treatment significantly improved the neurological deficit, reduced infarction volume, and alleviated neuronal injuries, blood–brain barrier (BBB) disruption, and brain edema. Additionally, CSO treatment significantly reduced microglial and astrocytic activation, inhibited TLR4 and NF-κB protein expression, and reduced the release of IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α. Finally, CSO treatment significantly decreased the number of C3d/glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP)-positive cells and C3d protein expression, and increased the number of S100A10/GFAP-positive cells and S100A10 protein expression. Conclusion Our results first found that CSO treatment alleviated ischemic stroke injury by reducing microglial and astrocytic activation and inflammation, which was related to the inhibition of TLR4/NF-κB pathway and the reduction of A1 phenotype neurotoxic astrocyte activation, suggesting that CSO could be a new strategy in the prevention of ischemic stroke.

Background Stroke is a sexually dimorphic disease and a leading cause of death and disability. Estrogen replacement therapy (ERT) confers beneficial neuroprotective effects if administered within a widely accepted time window called the “critical period.” However, very few studies have explored the idea of modulating the critical period to enable long‐term post‐menopausal women to regain more benefits from estrogen therapy. Here, motivated by previous findings that electroacupuncture could both alter estrogen metabolism and induce significant tolerance against stroke, it was explored whether EA could restore estrogen's neuroprotection against cerebral ischemia in long‐term ovariectomized (OVX) rats. Methods We implemented 1 week(w)‐EA pretreatment on OVX‐10w or OVX‐20w rats, and tested the expression of estrogen receptors, and detected the ERT's neuroprotection against stroke induced by middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO). Results We found that the expression levels of phospho‐ERα‐S118 and estrogen receptor β (ERβ) in the striatum of OVX‐10w rats were significantly decreased and ERT's neuroprotection was abolished in the OVX‐10w rats. However, EA‐1w pretreatment could significantly recover the expression levels of phospho‐ERα‐S118 and ERβ, and also restored the neuroprotective effects of ERT in OVX‐10w rats. However, EA‐1w pretreatment could not restore the expression of estrogen receptors and ERT's neuroprotection in OVX‐20w rats. Conclusion Taken together, our study indicates that EA may be an easy intervention that can restore the efficacy of estrogen therapy during the “critical period,” which has the potential to improve the stroke outcomes of an enormous number of long‐term post‐menopausal women. However, the time‐sensitive influences for how EA and estrogen metabolism interact with each other should be considered.

CNS inflammation is known to be an important pathogenetic mechanism of perioperative neurocognitive disorder (PND), and iron overload was reported to participate in this process accompanied by oxidative stress. Ferroptosis is an iron-dependent form of cell death, and occurs in multiple neurodegenerative diseases with cognitive disorder. However, the effect of ferroptosis in inflammation-related PND is unknown. In this study, we found that the ferroptosis inhibitor liproxstatin-1 ameliorated memory deficits in the mouse model of lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced cognitive impairment. Moreover, liproxstatin-1 decreased the activation of microglia and the release of interleukin (IL)-6 and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF)-α, attenuated oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation, and further weakened mitochondrial injury and neuronal damage after LPS exposure. Additionally, the protective effect of liproxstatin-1 was related to the alleviation of iron deposition and the regulation of the ferroptosis-related protein family TF, xCT, Fth, Gpx4, and FtMt. These findings enhance our understanding of inflammation-involved cognitive dysfunction and shed light on future preclinical studies.

40. Xylene and n-Hexane Adsorption Performance of a Waste Methanol-to-Propylene Catalyst under Acid-Base Treatment

Spent methanol-to-propylene (MTP) catalysts have a large specific surface area and high porosity but are usually directly disposed of in landfills, and recycling is rare. In this study, spent MTP catalyst was moderately dealuminized with acids and etched with an alkali solvent to increase its specific surface area. A novel adsorbent was obtained. XRD, SEM, FT-IR, XRD, XRF, and MAS-NMR characterization shows that the adsorbent maintains a typical ZSM-5 zeolite structure, and the dealumination effect of H2C2O4 is better than that of HCl. HCl mainly removes the framework aluminum of the molecular sieve; H2C2O4 not only removes the framework aluminum but also dissolves some of the nonframework aluminum, which increases the BET-specific surface area and pore diameter. The spent catalyst maintains an irregular ellipsoidal shape. After alkali treatment, the surface of the spherical particles becomes rough. With increasing alkali concentration, the damage degree increases. After treatment with 4 mol/L H2C2O4 and 0.1 mol/L NaOH, the p-xylene and n-hexane adsorption capacities reach the maximum, with values of 141.04 mg/g and 106.87 mg/g, respectively, 20.7% and 16.2% greater than those before treatment. These findings indicate that modified spent MTP catalyst has the potential for application in the removal of VOCs from the air.

Insulation materials play an extremely important role in the thermal protection of aerospace vehicles. Here, aluminum carbon aerogels (AlCAs) are designed for the thermal protection of aerospace. Taking AlCA with a carbonization temperature of 800 °C (AlCA–800) as an example, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images show an integrated three-dimensional porous frame structure in AlCA–800. In addition, the thermogravimetric test (TGA) reveals that the weight loss of AlCA–800 is only ca. 10%, confirming its desirable thermal stability. Moreover, the thermal conductivity of AlCA–800 ranges from 0.018 W m−1 K−1 to 0.041 W m−1 K−1, revealing an enormous potential for heat insulation applications. In addition, ANSYS numerical simulations are carried out on a composite structure to forecast the thermal protection ability of AlCA–800 acting as a thermal protection layer. The results uncover that the thermal protective performance of the AlCA–800 layer is outstanding, causing a 1185 K temperature drop of the structure surface that is exposed to a heat environment for ten minutes. Briefly, this work unveils a rational fabrication of the aluminum carbon composite aerogel and paves a new way for the efficient thermal protection materials of aerospace via the simple and economical design of the aluminum carbon aerogels under the guidance of ANSYS numerical simulation.

The interface performance of steel fiber-reinforced concrete (SFRC) is a critical factor in determining mechanical properties and durability. The degradation of the concrete matrix and micro-structure interface is caused by environmental erosion, which shortens the service life of the structure design. Considering different volume contents of steel fiber (0%, 1%, 2%), the failure mechanism of SFRC under different environmental erosion conditions was studied through a laboratory test scheme. A total of six environmental factors are selected, including water, sodium chloride solution, sodium sulfate solution, dilute sulfuric acid solution, sodium hydroxide solution, and a freeze-thaw cycle. When subjected to different erosion concentrations and periods, micro-structure and axial bearing capacity deterioration laws are compared and analyzed. A durability equation related to fiber mixture ratio and strength is presented based on the experimental data and the numerical simulation method. The influence of different environments on steel fiber-reinforced concrete is analyzed, and the grey correlation degree of axial compressive strength is analyzed. The experimental results show that steel fiber can effectively improve the concrete axial bearing capacity, but different responses are observed under the various erosion conditions. A freeze-thaw cycle environment has the most significant impact on the axial compressive strength of concrete, followed by the sulfuric acid environment, and other environments have a weaker impact. The research results will provide a theoretical basis for predicting the performance deterioration of SFRC concerning other erosion conditions and periods.

43. An Advanced Multiple‐Layer Canopy Model in the WRF Model With Large‐Eddy Simulations to Simulate Canopy Flows and Scalar Transport Under Different Stability Conditions

Abstract Forest canopies play a critical role in affecting momentum and scalar transfer. Although there have been recent advances in numerical simulations of turbulent flows and scalar transfer across plant canopies and the atmosphere interface, few models have incorporated all important physical and physiological processes in subcanopy layers. Here we describe and evaluate an advanced multiple‐layer canopy module (MCANOPY), which is developed based largely on the Community Land Model version 4.5 and then coupled with the Weather Research and Forecasting model with large‐eddy simulations (WRF‐LES). The MCANOPY includes a suite of subcanopy processes, including radiation transfer, photosynthesis, canopy layer energy balance, momentum drag, and heat, water vapor, and CO2 exchange between canopy layers and the canopy atmosphere. Numerical schemes for heat and water transport in soil, ground surface energy balance, and soil respiration are also included. Both the stand‐alone MCANOPY and the coupled system (the WRF‐LES‐MCANOPY) are evaluated against data measured in the Canopy Horizontal Array Turbulence Study field experiment. The MCANOPY performs reasonably well in reproducing vertical profiles of mean and turbulent flows as well as second‐order statistical quantities including heat and scalar fluxes within the canopy under unstable stability conditions. The coupled WRF‐LES‐MCANOPY captures major features of canopy edge flows under both neutral and unstable conditions. Limitations of the MCANOPY are discussed for our further work. Our results suggest that our model can be a promising modeling system for a variety of applications to study canopy flows and scalar transport (e.g., CO2).

Fibers used as reinforcement can increase the mechanical characteristics of engineering cementitious composites (ECC), but their frost resistance has received less attention. The mechanical properties of various fiber cementitious materials under the dual factors of freeze-thaw action and fiber dose are yet to be determined. This study examines the performance change patterns of cementitious composites, which contain carbon fiber, glass fiber, and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fiber at 0%, 0.5%, and 1% volume admixture in freeze-thaw tests. Three fiber cement-based materials are selected to do the compression and bending testing, and ABAQUS finite element modeling is used to assess the performance of fiber cement-based composite materials. The microscopic observation results show that the dispersion of glass and PVA fibers is higher than that of carbon fibers. As a result, the mechanical characteristics of the fiber-doped cementitious composites increase dramatically after freeze-thaw with increasing dosage. The compression test results show the frost resistance of carbon fiber > PVA fiber > glass fiber. In addition, the bending test results show the frost resistance of carbon fiber > glass fiber > PVA fiber. The 3D surface plots of the strength changes are established to observe the mechanical property changes under the coupling effect of admixture and freeze-thaw times. ABAQUS modeling is used to predict the strength of the cementitious composites under various admixtures and freeze-thaw cycles. The bending strength numerical equation is presented, and the bending and compressive strengths of three different fiber-cement matrix materials are accurately predicted.

Evaporation ( E ) from about 300 million lakes worldwide without plant physiological constraints directly reflects hydrological response to atmospheric forcings. However, it remains inadequately understood about what regulate spatial variability of global lake E across seasons. Here we show that vertical vapor pressure difference ( ${e_{\text{D}}}$ ) accounts for 66% of the spatial variability of annual E , followed by wind speed (16%). The ${e_{\text{D}}}$ is also the predominant factor modulating diurnal variability in E and causing greater E at night than during the daytime. As a consequence, spatial variability in nighttime E strongly regulates that in global E across seasons. Therefore, the observed widespread, heterogeneous changes in lake surface temperature that imply spatial variability in ${e_{\text{D}}}$ may have contributed to changes in global E variability.

Acute traumatic coagulopathy (ATC) is an extremely common but silent murderer; this condition presents early after trauma and impacts approximately 30% of severely injured patients who are admitted to emergency departments (EDs). Given that conventional coagulation indicators usually require more than 1 hour after admission to yield results—a limitation that frequently prevents the ability for clinicians to make appropriate interventions during the optimal therapeutic window—it is clearly of vital importance to develop prediction models that can rapidly identify ATC; such models would also facilitate ancillary resource management and clinical decision support. Using the critical care Emergency Rescue Database and further collected data in ED, a total of 1385 patients were analyzed and cases with initial international normalized ratio (INR) values >1.5 upon admission to the ED met the defined diagnostic criteria for ATC; nontraumatic conditions with potentially disordered coagulation systems were excluded. A total of 818 individuals were collected from Emergency Rescue Database as derivation cohorts, then were split 7:3 into training and test data sets. A Pearson correlation matrix was used to initially identify likely key clinical features associated with ATC, and analysis of data distributions was undertaken prior to the selection of suitable modeling tools. Both machine learning (random forest) and traditional logistic regression were deployed for prediction modeling of ATC. After the model was built, another 587 patients were further collected in ED as validation cohorts. The ATC prediction models incorporated red blood cell count, Shock Index, base excess, lactate, diastolic blood pressure, and potential of hydrogen. Of 818 trauma patients filtered from the database, 747 (91.3%) patients did not present ATC (INR ≤ 1.5) and 71 (8.7%) patients had ATC (INR > 1.5) upon admission to the ED. Compared to the logistic regression model, the model based on the random forest algorithm showed better accuracy (94.0%, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.922-0.954 to 93.5%, 95% CI: 0.916-0.95), precision (93.3%, 95% CI: 0.914-0.948 to 93.1%, 95% CI: 0.912-0.946), F1 score (93.4%, 95% CI: 0.915-0.949 to 92%, 95% CI: 0.9-0.937), and recall score (94.0%, 95% CI: 0.922-0.954 to 93.5%, 95% CI: 0.916-0.95) but yielded lower area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AU-ROC) (0.810, 95% CI: 0.673-0.918 to 0.849, 95% CI: 0.732-0.944) for predicting ATC in the trauma patients. The result is similar in the validation cohort. The values for classification accuracy, precision, F1 score, and recall score of random forest model were 0.916, 0.907, 0.901, and 0.917, while the AU-ROC was 0.830. The values for classification accuracy, precision, F1 score, and recall score of logistic regression model were 0.905, 0.887, 0.883, and 0.905, while the AU-ROC was 0.858. We developed and validated a prediction model based on objective and rapidly accessible clinical data that very confidently identify trauma patients at risk for ATC upon their arrival to the ED. Beyond highlighting the value of ED initial laboratory tests and vital signs when used in combination with data analysis and modeling, our study illustrates a practical method that should greatly facilitates both warning and guided target intervention for ATC.

Abstract Background The steroid hormone estrogen (17-β-estradiol, E2) provides neuroprotection against cerebral ischemic injury by activating estrogen receptors. The novel estrogen receptor G protein-coupled receptor 30 (GPR30) is highly expressed in the brain and provides acute neuroprotection against stroke. However, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Methods In this study, ovariectomized female mice were subjected to middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO), and E2, G1, and ICI182780 were administered immediately upon reperfusion. The infarction volume, neurological scores, and neuronal injuries were examined. Primary microglial cells were subjected to oxygen-glucose deprivation (OGD), and the drugs were administered immediately upon reintroduction. The pro-inflammatory cytokines TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6 in penumbra and microglia were assessed by ELISA. The cell viability and lactose dehydrogenase (LDH) release of neurons co-cultured with microglia were analyzed using cell counting kit-8 (CCK8) and LDH release assays. Microglial activation as well as GPR30, Iba1, and Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) protein expression and TLR4 mRNA expression were detected. Additionally, NF-κB activity was detected in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-activated microglia after the activation of GPR30. Results GPR30 was highly expressed in microglia and significantly increased after ischemic injury. The activation of GPR30 significantly reduced the infarction volume, improved the neurological deficit, and alleviated neuronal injuries. Moreover, GPR30 activation significantly reduced the release of TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6 from ischemic penumbra and microglia subjected to OGD and alleviated neuronal injury as assessed using the CCK8 and LDH assays. Finally, the activation of GPR30 relieved microglial activation, reduced Iba1 and TLR4 protein expression and TLR4 mRNA levels, and inhibited NF-κB activity. Conclusions Microglial GPR30 exerts acute neuroprotective effects by inhibiting TLR4-mediated microglial inflammation, which indicates that GPR30 may be a potential target for the treatment of ischemic stroke.

Coal gasification is a new direction for the clean utilization of coal, but it also brings huge environmental pressure on solid waste. In this paper, the high-crystallinity single-phase zeolite A was prepared by solid-phase alkali fusion synthesis from coal gasification fine slag (CGFS), without template agent, with low water consumption, and with low cost, and it was used to remove heavy metals such as Pb2+ and Cu2+ in simulated waste water. The main factors affecting the solid-phase and green synthesis methods were analyzed, and the optimum conditions for solid-phase synthesis of high-crystallinity single-phase zeolite A were determined as follows: NaOH/CGFS = 1.2; solid-phase alkali fusion temperature 823 K, solid-phase alkali fusion 90 min, liquid–solid ratio 4.5, and 353 K hydrothermal reaction for 12 h. The relative crystallinity, specific surface area, and ion-exchange capacity of single-phase zeolites A are 93.1%, 61.09 m2/g, and 268.4 mmol/100 g. The removal rates of Pb2+ and Cu2+ can reach more than 99%, especially for the removal efficiency of Pb2+, which is common in simulated waste water. This is an effective method with important application prospects, and it formed an effective way to recycle solid waste of coal chemical industry.

In this study, a Rh(I)/Ru(III) catalyst with a bimetallic space structure was designed and synthesized. The interaction between the metals of the bimetallic catalyst and the structure of the bridged dimer can effectively reduce the steric hindrance effect and help speed up the reaction rate while ensuring the stability of the catalyst. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results show that rhodium accepts electrons from chlorine, thereby increasing the electron-rich nature of rhodium and improving the catalytic activity. This promotes the nucleophilic reaction of the catalyst with methyl iodide and reduces the reaction energy barrier. The methanol carbonylation performance of the Rh/Ru catalyst was evaluated, and the results show that the conversion rate of methyl acetate and the yield of acetic acid are 96.0% under certain conditions. Furthermore, during the catalysis, no precipitate is formed and the amount of water is greatly reduced. It can be seen that the catalyst has good stability and activity.
