Accumulating evidence indicates that there is a trend of early puberty onset in humans. The early timing of puberty has raised concerns due to its association with significant negative health outcomes. However, overall impact and potential risk of early puberty remain uncertain. In this study, we conducted a comprehensive review of existing epidemiological studies to gain insights into the long-term adverse health effects associated with early puberty. Our objective was to provide a consolidated summary of these outcomes at a population level by considering studies that encompass various indicators of puberty. In all, early puberty has been identified as a potential risk factor for various metabolic diseases, such as obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases (CVD). Children who experience early puberty are more likely to have a higher body mass index (BMI) during adulthood, increasing their risk of obesity. Early puberty also has been found to be an independent risk factor for diabetes mellitus, including gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), as earlier onset of menarche in girls and voice breaking in boys is associated with a higher prevalence of T2DM. Furthermore, evidence suggests that early puberty may contribute to an elevated risk of CVD, including conditions like coronary heart disease (CHD), stroke, angina, and hypertension. In addition, adolescents who experience early puberty, particularly girls, are more likely to suffer from mental problems, such as behavioral dysfunction and depression. Notably, early puberty has a more significant impact on girls than boys. Further research should consider the underlying mechanisms and potential preventive measures.

Summary: The gut microbiome plays an important role in the healthy and efficient farming of dairy cows. However, high-dimensional microbial information is difficult to interpret in a simplified manner. We collected fecal samples from 161 cows and performed 16S amplicon sequencing. We developed an interpretable machine learning framework to classify individuals based on their milk urea nitrogen (MUN) concentrations. In this framework, we address the challenge of handling high-dimensional microbial data imbalances and identify 9 microorganisms strongly correlated with MUN. We introduce the Shapley Additive Explanations (SHAP) method to provide insights into the machine learning predictions. The results of the study showed that the performance of the machine learning model improved (accuracy = 72.7%) after feature selection on high-dimensional data. Among the 9 microorganisms, g__Firmicutes_unclassified had the greatest impact in the model. This study provides a reference for precision animal husbandry.

BackgroundGlobally, the burden of breast cancer has increased significantly in recent decades. Emerging evidence suggested that endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), which have the potential to interfere with the function of normal hormones, may play a crucial role in this trend. However, the potential relationships were inconsistent in various studies.Objective and search methodsIn our study, we sought to fully evaluate the currently available epidemiological evidence to ascertain whether certain EDC congeners and their metabolites are related to breast cancer risk. Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines, we conducted a comprehensive literature search of original peer-reviewed publications in three electronic databases: PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase. Publications that covered xenobiotic EDC exposures and breast cancer–confirmed histological results or antecedent medical records or reporting to health registers were taken into consideration.OutcomesThe final result of the literature search was 6,498 references, out which we found 67 publications that matched the requirements for meta-analysis and eight publications for qualitative trend synthesis. In this meta-analysis, statistically significant associations revealed that (i) 1-chloro-4-[2,2,2-trichloro-1-(4-chlorophenyl)ethyl]benzene (p,p'-DDT) and its major metabolite 2,2-bis(4-chlorophenyl)-1,1-dichloroethylene (p,p'-DDE) were somewhat related to a greater risk of breast cancer. However, this relationship only existed in blood serum but not in adipose tissue. (ii) Breast cancer risk was increased by exposure to chlordane and hexachlorocyclohexane. (iii) Five polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB 99, PCB 105, PCB 118, PCB 138, and PCB 183) can increase the risk of breast cancer. (iv) One phthalate congener (BBP) and one per- and polyfluoroalkyl substance congener (PFDoDA) were negatively associated with breast cancer risk. Unfortunately, heterogeneity was not well explained in our review, and a limited number of available prospective studies investigating the associations between EDC exposure and breast cancer were included in our meta-analysis. The Yarlung Tsangpo-Brahmaputra River Basin (YBRB) has long been troubled by the competitive water development activities of India, China, and Bangladesh. While energy thirst and food security keep challenging the riparian States, climate-related changing monsoon pattern increases the potential for conflicts over scarce water. Based on a quantitative analysis of 400 water events spanning the years 1958–2020 of the basin, this research tries to provide a holistic understanding of the conflict and cooperation and explore the possibility of water war or ‘climate-based’ water war in the basin; and thus formulate more precise recommendations to help prevent and mitigate conflicts. The results of this quantitative research surprisingly reveal that, instead of being main causes of bilateral conflict in the basin, the ‘energy imperative’ and the ‘climate imperative’ have become two major catalysts for water cooperation in the basin, water war is therefore highly unlikely. However, current bilateral cooperation on climate change mainly involves ‘climate adaptation’; few efforts have yet been made cooperatively in the field of ‘climate mitigation’; while traditional disputes around food and energy persist, the imperative of ecological protection and the lack of attention to cooperative climate mitigation are set to intensify potential conflict in the YBRB. Abstract We study the flow physics underlying the recently developed remote sensing capability of detecting oceanic microplastics, which is based on the measurable surface roughness reduction induced by the presence of microplastics on the ocean surface. In particular, we are interested in whether this roughness reduction is caused by the microplastics as floating particles, or by surfactants which follow similar transport paths as microplastics. For this purpose, we experimentally test the effects of floating particles and surfactants on surface roughness, quantified by the mean square slope (MSS), with waves generated by a mechanical wave maker or by wind. For microplastics, we find that their effect on MSS critically depends on the surface area fraction of coverage. The damping by particles is observed only for fractions above O (5–10%), much higher than the realistic ocean condition. For surfactants, their damping effects on both mechanically generated waves and wind waves are quantified, which are shown to be much more significant than that by microplastics. Several new mechanisms/relations for roughness damping by surfactants are also identified. The implications of these experimental results to remote sensing are discussed.

Images captured under poor lighting conditions often suffer from low brightness, low contrast, color distortion, and noise. The function of low-light image enhancement is to improve the visual effect of such images for subsequent processing. Recently, deep learning has been used more and more widely in image processing with the development of artificial intelligence technology, and we provide a comprehensive review of the field of low-light image enhancement in terms of network structure, training data, and evaluation metrics. In this paper, we systematically introduce low-light image enhancement based on deep learning in four aspects. First, we introduce the related methods of low-light image enhancement based on deep learning. We then describe the low-light image quality evaluation methods, organize the low-light image dataset, and finally compare and analyze the advantages and disadvantages of the related methods and give an outlook on the future development direction.

This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between temperature (T), relative humidity (RH), and temperature and humidity index (THI), milk yield (MY), rumination time (RT), and activity (AT) of dairy cows in different parities under low temperature and high humidity (LTHH). In this study, the number of samples each day was determined by all healthy cows in the barn with parity and days in milk (DIM) within 5 and 305, respectively. The box plot method was used for screening and removing outliers of dairy cow indicators after classification according to parity and DIM. To remove the effect of DIM on MY, a bivariate regression model was used to standardize the MY in milk yield index (MYI). The best bivariate regression model based on the lowest Akaike information criterion was used to analyze the relationship between behavioral parameters, MYI, and microclimate indicators for each parity. The mitigation and prevention of acute immune stress are essential for livestock production. Clostridium butyricum (C. butyricum) has shown positive effects in stabilizing intestinal microbiota disorders, improving immune function and inhibiting disease development, but its effects on ruminants are unclear. Therefore, the current trial hypothesized that C. butyricum could improve goats’ immune function and antioxidant capacity by regulating bacterial communities and blood metabolism and effectively alleviating the acute immune stress induced by Lipopolysaccharides (LPS). Sixteen healthy goats were fed C. butyricum for 70 days, and the goats were challenged with LPS on day 71. Blood and feces were collected at 0 h and 6 h after the challenge to evaluate the effects of C. butyricum on their intestinal microbiota, immune function, antioxidant function, and plasma metabolites. The results showed that C. butyricum had no significant effect on plasma biochemical parameters at the beginning of the LPS challenge. However, supplementation with C. butyricum increased plasma levels of IgA, IgG, T-SOD, and T-AOC (P < 0.05), but TNF-α, IL-6, and MDA were decreased (P < 0.05). In contrast, IL-10 showed an increasing trend (P < 0.10). Rectal microbiota analysis showed that C. butyricum significantly increased the relative abundance of Epsilonbacteraeota at the phylum level of goats; at the genus level, the relative abundances of Campylobacter and Anaerorhabdus]_furcosa_group were also significantly increased (P < 0.05). Christensenellaceae_R-7_group as the dominant microbiota also showed a significant increase in their abundance values, while Clostridium and Lachnospiraceae_UCG-001 were significantly lower (P < 0.05). When the LPS challenge continued up to 6 h, dietary supplementation with C. butyricum still resulted in significantly higher plasma concentrations of IgA, IL-10, and T-SOD in goats than in the control group, reducing TNF-α levels (P < 0.05). In addition, plasma levels of T-CHOL and LDL were significantly reduced, and the expression of d-proline was significantly upregulated according to metabolomic analysis (P < 0.05). In conclusion, dietary supplementation with C. butyricum helped optimize the expression of bacterial communities and plasma metabolites to enhance the ability of goats to alleviate acute immune stress.

Oat hay and alfalfa hay are important roughage resources in livestock production. However, the effect of the mixture of oat hay and alfalfa hay on the meat quality of Albas goats is unclear. This study aimed to investigate the effects of feeding different proportions of oat hay and alfalfa hay on the growth performance and meat quality of Albas goats. Therefore, 32 goats were fed for 70 days and randomly divided into four treatment groups on the principle of similar weight: whole oat group (OAT), oat alfalfa ratio 3:7 group (OA73), oat alfalfa ratio 7:3 group (OA37) and whole alfalfa group (Alfalfa), with eight goats in each group. Daily feed intake records, feces, feed samples, and rumen fluid collection were made throughout the trial. The goats were weighed on the last day of the trial, and four goats per group were randomly selected for slaughter. Cecum contents, meat samples, and hot carcass weight were collected, and data were recorded. Furthermore, the relationship between the rumen and cecal microbes on performance and meat quality was clarified by analyzing the rumen and hindgut microbiomes. The results showed that feeding alfalfa could significantly reduce the daily weight gain of fattening goats. Compared with the highest group (OA37), the daily weight gain decreased by 19.21%. Although there was no significant change in feed intake in the four treatments, the feed conversion rate of the alfalfa group significantly decreased by 30.24–36.47% compared to the other groups. However, with the increased alfalfa content, MDA decreased significantly, T-AOC was up-regulated, and the antioxidant activity of the fattened goat meat fed with the high alfalfa group was significantly higher than that of the low alfalfa group. Notably, the abundance of Bacteroidales_unclassified and Clostridium were strongly correlated with T-AOC and MDA. Therefore, increasing the proportion of alfalfa in the diet can affect the antioxidant activity of goat meat by improving the gut microbiota, while an oat-hay mixture can improve the growth performance of livestock.

Patients with cancer are considered at high risk of COVID-19 related complications with higher mortality rates than healthy individuals. This study investigated the perception, acceptance, and influencing factors of COVID-19 vaccination among cancer patients in Guangzhou, China. A cross-sectional survey was conducted in Guangzhou, China from August to November 2021 in two tertiary medical centers. Outpatients were recruited through hospital posters to complete a questionnaire including demographics, medical history, knowledge, and attitude toward COVID-19 vaccines and COVID-19 vaccination status. Chi-square tests and multivariable logistic regression were used to analyze predictors for acceptance of COVID-19 vaccination. In total, only 75 out of 343 patients (21.87%) had received at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine. Twenty-one patients (6.12%) had received a recommendation about COVID-19 vaccination from their physicians. Patients who were recommended by physicians to get vaccinated (aOR = 11.71 95% CI: 2.71–50.66), with a monthly income of more than CNY 5000 (aOR = 3.94, 95% CI: 1.88–8.26) were more likely to have received COVID-19 vaccination. Cancer patients who had been diagnosed for more than one year (aOR = 0.21, 95% CI: 0.09–0.51), had received multiple cancer treatment strategies (aOR = 0.34, 95% CI: 0.16–0.74), worried about the safety of COVID-19 vaccines (aOR = 0.21, 95% CI: 0.11–0.40), were less likely to have received COVID-19 vaccination. COVID-19 vaccination uptake among cancer patients was insufficient. The proportion of cancer patients receiving vaccination recommendations from physicians remains inadequate. Physicians are expected to play an essential role in patients’ knowledge of the safety and effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines.

Abstract A novel dual 6/3 Transverse Flux Bearingless Switched Reluctance Motor is proposed to solve the coupling problem between torque and suspension of conventional Switched Reluctance Motor. The working principle is introduced in detail, the motor is modelled by ANSYS, and the accurate mathematical model of the suspension force is deduced and verified. The electromagnetic characteristics of the motor are simulated, and the torque characteristics, suspension characteristics and the coupling characteristics between them are verified. The simulation results show that the torque and suspension force can be stabilised by using the zoning control of torque and suspension force, and the decoupling between torque and suspension force is excellent.

Clostridium butyricum, as a probiotic with a variety of active products, has been widely used to improve the intestinal health of humans and animals. Previous studies had demonstrated that Clostridium butyricum exhibited potential protective and positive effects in human disease research and animal production by producing a variety of beneficial substances, such as intestinal inflammation, the intestinal epithelial barrier, metabolic diseases, and regulation of the gut microbiota. Therefore, we hypothesized that dietary Clostridium butyricum supplementation could improve gut health in fattening goats by modulating gut microbiota. However, it is unclear whether Clostridium butyricum can reach the intestine through the rumen, so 15 healthy Albas goats were selected and randomly divided into 3 treatments with 5 replicates in each group. The groups were divided as follows: control group (CON: basal diet), rumen-protected Clostridium butyricum group (RPCB: basal diet plus 1.0 × 109 CFU/kg Clostridium butyricum coated with hydrogenated fat), and Clostridium butyricum group (CB: basal diet plus 1.0 × 109 CFU/kg Clostridium butyricum). The experiment was slaughtered after a 70-day growth test, and the jejunal mucosa and intestinal contents of the goats were collected to determine tight junction proteins related genes expression and 16S rDNA microbial sequencing analysis to evaluate the intestine health. The results showed that dietary supplementation with Clostridium butyricum significantly increased the expression of the Claudin-4 gene of the jejunal mucosa (P < 0.05) and had a trend toward a significant increase in the Occludin gene (0.05 < P < 0.10). However, Clostridium butyricum had no significant effect on the expression of intestinal inflammatory factors (P > 0.10). In addition, the relative fractionation of Clostridium and Clostridiaceae_unclassified in the gut microbiota at the genus level decreased significantly compared with controls (P < 0.05). The results of the analysis of the level of Clostridium species showed that Clostridium butyricum only existed in the treatment group. And the correlation results showed that Occludin and Claudin-4 genes were positively correlated with Sharppea and Clostridium butyricum, and negatively correlated with Clostridium (P < 0.05). Supplementing Clostridium butyricum in the diet did not significantly affect the intestinal immune function of goats, while regulation of the intestinal microbiota was associated with improving the intestinal epithelial barrier.

Abstract To deal with the restriction of vehicle space on a flywheel battery, a 5‐degrees of freedom (DOF) hybrid excitation bearingless motor (HEBM) was proposed. The 5‐DOF suspension force required for the flywheel battery is provided by HEBM. The use of a permanent magnet to provide a suspension bias magnetic field reduces power consumption. The relationship between the torque and suspension systems is weak coupling, which is beneficial to the decoupling control. To verify the aforementioned advantages of HEBM, its topology and principle are introduced, and its electromagnetic characteristics are analysed by finite element method. The HEBM is compared with the single‐winding bearingless switch reluctance motor by focusing on suspension loss and force density.

Clostridium butyricum (C. butyricum) is currently widely used to improve the body health and productive performance of monogastric animals. However, there have been few reports on the effects and specific mechanism of action of Clostridium butyricum in ruminants. This study aimed to investigate the effects of Clostridium butyricum supplementation on the growth performance and digestive microbiota of fattening goats. Twenty-four healthy male Albas goats (body weight = 22 ± 2.03 kg) were randomly divided into 3 treatment groups with eight goats in each group. The treatments were as follows: control group (CON) (basal diet, concentrate to forage ratio = 65:35); low-dose Clostridium butyricum (LCB) (basal diet plus 2.0 × 108 CFU/kg Clostridium butyricum); and high-dose Clostridium butyricum (HCB) (basal diet plus 1.0 × 109 CFU/kg Clostridium butyricum). The experiment lasted for 8 weeks after a 2-week adaptation period. Therefore, growth performance and rumen and rectum microbiota were evaluated in goats supplemented with Clostridium butyricum and its metabolites. The results showed that dietary supplementation with Clostridium butyricum significantly increased the pH (P < 0.05), but had no significant effect on growth performance (P > 0.05). Compared with the control group, dietary Clostridium butyricum supplementation significantly increased the relative abundance of Prevotella_1, Christensenellaceae AE_R-7_Group and Prevotellaceae AE_UCG-003 (P < 0.05), and significantly decreased Succiniclasticum and Muribaculaceae_unclassified (P < 0.05). Bearingless switched reluctance motor (BSRM) adopts a doubly salient structure without windings on the rotor. BSRMs have the advantages of high rate of fault tolerance and simple structure, high power, super high speed and strong adaptability. They have broad application prospects in aerospace, flywheel energy storage, new energy and biomedical fields. Firstly, the suspension operation mechanism of a conventional double winding BSRM is described in this paper. The coupling between torque and suspension force is analyzed with a finite element method. On this basis, from the perspective of magnetic circuit optimization of the torque system and suspension system, the magnetic circuit design, decoupling mechanism and performance characteristics of self-decoupled BSRMs with different topological structures are described centering on the self-decoupled topology form of the BSRM. Finally, the study and development of BSRMs in the future are prospected based on the research status.

Volatile fatty acids (VFAs) and methane are the main products of rumen fermentation. Quantitative studies of rumen fermentation parameters can be performed using in vitro techniques and machine learning methods. The currently proposed models suffer from poor generalization ability due to the small number of samples. In this study, a prediction model for rumen fermentation parameters (methane, acetic acid (AA), and propionic acid (PA)) of dairy cows is established using the stacking ensemble learning method and in vitro techniques. Four factors related to the nutrient level of total mixed rations (TMRs) are selected as inputs to the model: neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF), crude protein (CP), and dry matter (DM). The comparison of the prediction results of the stacking model and base learners shows that the stacking ensemble learning method has better prediction results for rumen methane (coefficient of determination (R2) = 0.928, root mean square error (RMSE) = 0.968 mL/g), AA (R2 = 0.888, RMSE = 1.975 mmol/L) and PA (R2 = 0.924, RMSE = 0.74 mmol/L). And the stacking model simulates the variation of methane and VFAs in relation to the dietary fiber content. To demonstrate the robustness of the model in the case of small samples, an independent validation experiment was conducted. The stacking model successfully simulated the transition of rumen fermentation type and the change of methane content under different concentrate-to-forage (C:F) ratios of TMR. These results suggest that the rumen fermentation parameter prediction model can be used as a decision-making basis for the optimization of dairy cow diet compositions, rapid screening of methane emission reduction, feed beneficial to dairy cow health, and improvement of feed utilization.

Abstract Generating torque and suspension force with one set of windings at the same time can increase the copper space factor and improve the torque output capacity. This structure has a unique application advantage for bearingless motors used in onboard flywheel energy storage. A consequent‐pole bearingless permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) with integrated winding is designed and researched. Regulating suspension current has minimal effect on the torque performance of the motor in this design. The effectiveness and feasibility of this design are verified through a finite element calculation. Its advantages and application scope are discussed.

The existence of the harmonic of the suspension magnetomotive force is a key factor affecting the precision of the suspension force of the Consequent-pole Bearingless Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor, and the coupling of motor’s suspension force in different degrees of freedom is obvious. Aiming at the improvement of the motor’s suspension performance, a 48 slot 8-pole consequent-pole bearingless permanent magnet synchronous motor with low harmonic suspension sinusoidal winding is designed in this paper. The effects of two kinds of sinusoidal suspension windings, 90° type and 120° type, on the optimization of suspension performance are analyzed, and the finite element analysis was used to verify that these two low-harmonic suspension winding structures, especially the 120° type, can effectively suppress the motor’s suspension magnetomotive force harmonics, improve the motor’s suspension force accuracy, and at the same time make the coupling problem between different suspension degrees of freedom of consequent-pole bearingless permanent magnet synchronous motor improved obviously.

ABSTRACT Draft genomes of the fungal species Ambrosiella cleistominuta, Cercospora brassicicola, C. citrullina, Physcia stellaris, and Teratosphaeria pseudoeucalypti are presented. Physcia stellaris is an important lichen forming fungus and Ambrosiella cleistominuta is an ambrosia beetle symbiont. Cercospora brassicicola and C. citrullina are agriculturally relevant plant pathogens that cause leaf-spots in brassicaceous vegetables and cucurbits respectively. Teratosphaeria pseudoeucalypti causes severe leaf blight and defoliation of Eucalyptus trees. These genomes provide a valuable resource for understanding the molecular processes in these economically important fungi.

The purpose of this experiment was to investigate the changes of carbohydrate composition in fermented total mixed diet and its effects on rumen fermentation, methane production, and rumen microbiome in vitro. The concentrate-to-forage ratio of the total mixed ration (TMR) was 4:6, and TMR was ensiled with lactic acid bacteria and fibrolytic enzymes. The results showed that different TMRs had different carbohydrate compositions and subfractions, fermentation characteristics, and bacterial community diversity. After fermentation, the fermented total mixed ration (FTMR) group had lower contents of neutral detergent fiber, acid detergent fiber, starch, non-fibrous carbohydrates, and carbohydrates. In addition, lactic acid content and relative abundance of Lactobacillus in the FTMR group were higher. Compared with the TMR group, the in vitro ammonia nitrogen and total volatile fatty acid concentrations and the molar proportion of propionate and butyrate were increased in the FTMR group. However, the ruminal pH, molar proportion of acetate, and methane production were significantly decreased in the FTMR group. Notably, we found that the relative abundance of ruminal bacteria was higher in FTMR than in TMR samples, including Prevotella, Coprococcus, and Oscillospira. At the same time, we found that the diversity of methanogens in the FTMR group was lower than that in the TMR group. The relative abundance of Methanobrevibacter significantly decreased, while the relative abundances of Methanoplanus and vadinCA11 increased. The relative abundances of Entodinium and Pichia significantly decreased in the FTMR group compared with the TMR group. These results suggest that FTMR can be used as an environmentally cleaner technology in animal farming due to its ability to improve ruminal fermentation, modulate the rumen microbiome, and reduce methane emissions.

Abstract A novel dual‐phase‐conducted type bearingless switched reluctance flywheel motor is proposed, which has a hybrid outer rotor comprising circular segment and scalloped lamination segment, and only one set of winding is placed on each stator pole. In order to drive the flywheel to accelerate or slow down, two phases of windings in this motor conduct simultaneously. One phase provides radial suspension force, and the other phase provides electromagnetic torque. There exits satisfying decoupling between torque and suspension force. With the circular segment of the rotor, the continuity and stability of radial force can be enhanced. Finite element analysis results confirm the feasibility of the theoretical scheme.

The objectives of this study were to evaluate changes in profiles of odd- and branched-chain fatty acids (OBCFA), including pentadecanoic acid (C15:0), 13-methyltetradecanoic acid (iso-C15:0), 12-methyltetradecanoic acid (anteiso-C15:0), 14-methylpentadecanoic acid (iso-C16:0), heptadecanoic acid (C17:0), 15-methylhexadecanoic acid (iso-C17:0), and 14-methylhexadecanoic acid (anteiso-C17:0) during in vitro fermentation of pure carbohydrates mixtures in the buffer-rumen fluid. The second objective was to correlate the changes in the OBCFA profile to the corresponding changes in ruminal fermentation parameters, microbial crude protein (MCP) synthesis, and bacterial populations. Five pure carbohydrates mixtures containing different cellulose: starch (C:S) ratios, i.e., 0:100, 25:75, 50:50, 75:25, and 100:0, were incubated for 6, 12, 18, and 24 h in vitro. The results showed that there was significant interaction (P < 0.05) between C:S and incubation time for changes in all OBCFA profiles, except iso-C17:0. The highest concentration of total OBCFA (3.94 mg/g dry matter; DM) was observed in the residues after 24 h of fermentation when the C:S was 0:100, while the lowest concentration of OBCFA (1.65 mg/g DM) was produced after 6 h of incubation when the C:S was 50:50. The correlation analysis revealed that the concentration of iso-C16:0 might be a potential marker for the estimation of total volatile fatty acids (ρ = 0.78) and MCP synthesis (ρ = 0.82) in the rumen. Compared to starch degrading bacteria, cellulolytic bacteria had stronger correlations with OBCFA concentrations, and the strongest correlation was found between the population of Ruminococcus flavefaciens with C15:0 concentration (ρ = 0.70). Notably, this is the first paper reporting relationship between OBCFA with rumen fermentation products and microbial protein synthesis based on fermentation of pure carbohydrates mixtures in vitro, and thus avoid confounding interference from dietary protein and fat presence in the in vivo studies. However, more in-depth experiments are needed to substantiate the current findings.

Bladder cancer is characterized by its frequent recurrence and progression. Effective treatment strategies need to be based on an accurate risk stratification, in which muscle invasiveness and tumor grade represent the two most important factors. Traditional imaging techniques provide preliminary information about muscle invasiveness but are lacking in terms of accuracy. Although as the gold standard, pathological biopsy is only available after the surgery and cannot be performed longitudinally for long-term surveillance. In this work, we developed a microfluidic approach that interrogates circulating tumor cells (CTCs) in the peripheral blood of bladder cancer patients to reflect the risk stratification of the disease. In a cohort of 48 bladder cancer patients comprising 33 non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) cases and 15 muscle invasive bladder cancer (MIBC) cases, the CTC count was found to be considerably higher in the MIBC group compared with the NMIBC group (4.67 vs. 1.88 CTCs/3 mL, P=0.019), and was significantly higher in high-grade bladder cancer patients verses low-grade bladder cancer patients (3.69 vs. 1.18 CTCs/3mL, P=0.024). This microfluidic assay of CTCs is believed to be a promising complementary tool for the risk stratification of bladder cancer.

Background: The evaluation for surgical resectability of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) patients is not only imaging-based but highly subjective. An objective method is urgently needed. We report on the clinical value of a phenotypic circulating tumor cell (CTC)-based blood test for a preoperative prognostic assessment of tumor metastasis and overall survival (OS) of PDAC patients. Methods: Venous blood samples from 46 pathologically confirmed PDAC patients were collected prospectively before surgery and immunoassayed using a specially designed TU-chip™. Captured CTCs were differentiated into epithelial (E), mesenchymal and hybrid (H) phenotypes. A further 45 non-neoplastic healthy donors provided blood for cell line validation study and CTC false positive quantification. Findings: A validated multivariable model consisting of disjunctively combined CTC phenotypes: “H-CTC≥15.0 CTCs/2ml OR E-CTC≥11.0 CTCs/2ml” generated an optimal prediction of metastasis with a sensitivity of 1.000 (95% CI 0.889–1.000) and specificity of 0.886 (95% CI 0.765–0.972). Abstract The current research of supporting and transmission system in flywheel energy storage system (FESS) focuses on the low consumption design. However, friction loss is a non-negligible factor in the high-speed but lightweight FESS energy and momentum storage with mechanical-type supporting system. In order to realize the support system without mechanical loss and to maximize the efficiency of the flywheel battery, a permanent magnet biased magnetic bearings (PMBMB) is applied to the FESS with the advantages of low loss, high critical speed, flexible controllability and compact structure. In this frame, the relevant research of three degrees of freedom (3-DOF) PMBMB for a new type FESS is carried out around the working principle, structural composition, coupling characteristics analysis, mathematical model, and structural design. In order to verify the performance of the 3-DOF PMBMB, the radial force mathematical model and the coupling determination equations of radial two DOF are calculated according to an equivalent magnetic circuit, and radial–axial coupling is analyzed through finite element analysis. Moreover, a control system is presented to solve the control problems in practical applications. The rotor returns to the balanced position in 0.05 s and maintains stable suspension. The displacement fluctuation is approximately 40 μm in the y direction and 30 μm in the x direction. Test results indicate that the dynamic rotor of the proposed flywheel energy storage system with PMBMB has excellent characteristics, such as good start-of-suspension performance and stable suspension characteristics. The proposed research provides the instruction to design and control a low loss support system for FESS.

Summary: III–V/Si epitaxial tandems with a 1.7-eV GaAsP top cell promise stable power conversion efficiencies above the fundamental limit of Si single-junction cells. However, III–V/Si epitaxial tandems have suffered from limited minority carrier diffusion length in the top cell, leading to reduced short-circuit current densities (JSC) and efficiencies. While conventional wisdom dictates that dislocation density in III–V/Si tandems must be reduced to boost efficiency, here, we show that heterointerface design and growth sequence also play critical roles in reducing recombination losses. Our improved GaAsP cells make use of a wide-band gap AlGaAsP electron-blocking layer that forms a pristine interface with GaAsP, resulting in a 10%–20% (absolute) boost in quantum efficiency over previous work in the critical red wavelength range (600–725 nm), despite similar dislocation density. Combining the improved top cell carrier collection with Si backside texturing, we obtain 25.0% efficient GaAsP/Si tandem cells with a closely matched JSC of 18.8 mA/cm2.

The management of body condition score (BCS) during the dry period is associated with the postpartum health outcomes of dairy cows. However, the difference between the actual BCS and the fixed ideal value is not able to accurately predict the occurrence of postpartum diseases. This study aimed to use statistical process control (SPC) technology to monitor the BCS of dry cows, to evaluate the effect of control charts on nutritional strategies, and to explore the utility of SPC in predicting the incidence of postpartum subclinical ketosis (SCK). The BCS and SCK data of 286 cows from the dry off period to 60 days postpartum were collected to set up the early warning function. Three control charts, including a control chart for the average BCS of the herds, for the BCS of each dry cow, and for individual BCS, were established. The early warning signs for postpartum SCK development were: (1) an individual BCS more than 3.5 that remained unchanged for six weeks; (2) a capability index (CPK), an SPC tool, greater than −0.52. Using these parameters, the early warning signs of SCK development were verified in 429 dry cows. The results showed that the accuracy of early warning signal was 0.64 and the precision was 0.26. The control chart showed that the average BCS of dry cows was consistently higher than the expected upper limit of BCS during the experimental period, and that the addition of new cows to the herds increased the average BCS. In summary, the application of SPC technology to monitor the BCS of dry cows was not a good tool for the prediction of postpartum SCK occurrence but was an appropriate tool for guiding positive nutrition strategies.
