Abstract

Introduction: Thiamine (Vitamin B1) is an essential micronutrient and is classically considered a co-factor in energy metabolism. The association between thiamine status and whole-body metabolism in critical illness has not been studied. Objectives: To determine association between whole blood thiamine pyrophosphate (TPP) concentrations and plasma metabolites and connected metabolic pathways using high resolution metabolomics (HRM) in critically ill patients. Methods: Cross-sectional study performed at Erciyes University Hospital, Kayseri, Turkey and Emory University, Atlanta, GA, USA. Participants were critically ill adults with an expected length of intensive care unit stay longer than 48 h and receiving chronic furosemide therapy. A total of 76 participants were included. Mean age was 69 years (range 33–92 years); 65% were female. Blood for TPP and metabolomics was obtained on the day of ICU admission. Whole blood TPP was measured by HPLC and plasma HRM was performed using liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry. Data was analyzed using regression analysis of TPP levels against all plasma metabolomic features in metabolome-wide association studies (MWAS). MWAS using the highest and lowest TPP concentration tertiles was performed as a secondary analysis. Results: Specific metabolic pathways associated with whole blood TPP levels in regression and tertile analysis included pentose phosphate, fructose and mannose, branched chain amino acid, arginine and proline, linoleate, and butanoate pathways. Conclusions: Plasma HRM revealed that thiamine status, determined by whole blood TPP concentrations, was significantly associated with metabolites and metabolic pathways related to metabolism of energy, carbohydrates, amino acids, lipids, and the gut microbiome in adult critically ill patients. 15. On the Dendrite‐Suppressing Effect of Laser‐Processed Polylactic Acid‐Derived Carbon Coated Zinc Anode in Aqueous Zinc Ion Batteries.

Abstract

A major bottleneck limiting the commercialization of aqueous zinc ion batteries (AZIBs) is dendrite formation on the zinc (Zn) anode during the plating/stripping process, which leads to rapid deterioration in performance and, consequently to the device failure. In this regard, researchers are trying to design more stable anodes toward suppressing dendrite formation. One possible solution to tackle this problem and to extend the cycling life of AZIBs is to modify the zinc anode surface by coating carbonaceous materials, enabling more controlled charge flux and uniform ion distribution. This work reports sustainable and bio‐derived polylactic acid (PLA) as a coating layer on the zinc anode. Carbonizing this polymer under ambient conditions using a high‐power nanosecond laser forms a carbon‐coated zinc foil, which was directly utilized as the anode in aqueous zinc ion batteries. The fabricated laser‐processed PLA‐derived carbon‐coated zinc anode demonstrated an extended cycling life of almost 1600 hours, significantly outperforming the bare zinc anode. A full aqueous zinc ion battery assembled from as‐modified anode and as‐prepared V2O5 nanofibers as cathode was able to deliver a specific capacity of 238 mAh g−1 at 1.0 A g−1 with a capacity retention of 70 % after 1000 cycles. 30. Necklace-like Nitrogen-Doped Tubular Carbon 3D Frameworks for Electrochemical Energy Storage

Abstract

The design and synthesis of a necklace‐like nitrogen‐doped tubular carbon (NTC) are presented by growing microporous polyhedral ZIF‐8 particles and a uniform layer of ZIF‐8 on sacrificial ZnO tetrapods (ZTPs). Oxygen vacancies together with defect regions on the surface of the ZTPs result in the formation of ZIF‐8 polyhedra in conjunction with a very thin shell. This necklace‐like NTC structure has a high N content, very large surface area, ultrahigh microporosity, and quite high electrical conductivity. NTC‐based symmetrical supercapacitor and zinc‐ion capacitor (ZIC) devices are fabricated and their electrochemical performance is measured. The NTC supercapacitor shows an ultrahigh rate capability (up to 2000 mV s−1) and promising cycle life, retaining 91.5% of its initial performance after 50 000 galvanostatic charge–discharge cycles. An aqueous ZIC, constructed using the NTC, has a specific capacitance of 341.2 F g−1 at a current density of 0.1 A g−1 and an energy density of 189.6 Wh kg−1 with a 2.0‐V voltage window, respectively. The outstanding performance is attributed to the NTC high N‐doping content, a continuous “polyhedral 3D hollow” architecture and the highly porous microtubular arms exhibiting very high surface area.

34. Antiphospholipid antibodies in COVID-19-associated pneumonia patients in intensive care unit.

Abstract

Objectives: Antiphospholipid antibodies (APAs) increase the risk of excessive blood clotting, but their role in COVID-19 remains unclear. We aimed to investigate the presence of conventional APAs used in the classification of antiphospholipid antibody syndrome in patients with severe lung infection with SARS-CoV-2 and to compare these results with non-COVID-19 critically ill patients Methods: Thirty-one COVID-19 patients (COVID group) and 28 non-COVID-19 critically ill patients (non-COVID group), were included in the study. Anti-cardiolipin (ACA) (IgG, IgM), anti-β2-glycoprotein 1 (Anti-β2GPI) (IgG, IgM, and IgA), and if the patient had not received any anti thrombotic agent before blood collection, lupus anticoagulant (LAC) tests were studied from the plasma of the patients. For testing ACA and Anti-β2GPI, ELISA method was used, while fully automated coagulometer device was used for LAC test. Results: APAs were positive in 25.81% in the COVID group (8/31) and 25% in the non-COVID group (7/28). LAC was the most common APA present in 23.08% of the COVID-19 group, who underwent measurement (6/26), while 3.57% of the non-COVID group was LAC positive (1/28) (p=.047). In the COVID group, ACA IgM, and IgG were positive in 6.45% and 0%, respectively (2/31 vs 0/31). In the non-COVID group, ACA IgM was not positive in any patient, while ACA IgG was positive in 7.14% (2/28). Anti-β2GPI IgG and IgM tests were not positive in any patient in either the COVID or the non-COVID group. Anti-β2GPI IgA were positive in 6.45% and 14.29%, respectively (2/31 vs 4/28). Conclusion: In this study, APAs were equally positive in critically ill patients among COVID-19 or non-COVID-19 patients. Only LAC was more observed in COVID-19 patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

35. Heat activated VO2(R) cathodes for high-performance aqueous zinc ion batteries

Abstract

We introduce a novel approach for design and production of vanadium dioxide (VO2) cathodes activated by heat, specifically tailored for use in aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs). Our cathodes exhibit distinctive metal-insulator transition (MIT) characterized by the shift between monoclinic (M) and tetragonal rutile (R) phases. The employment of an aqueous electrolyte in ZIBs enables successful operation of VO2cathodes, showcasing phase transition and enhanced electrochemical performance above a readily attainable temperature of approximately 68 °C. The MIT feature enhances the charge transfer properties at electrode-electrolyte interfaces, resulting in notable improvements in specific capacity and energy densities. Fabricated VO2(M) cathodes underwent heat-triggered transformation to VO2(R), resulting in a remarkable increase (400 %) in capacity. At 0.1 A g−1, VO2(R) cathodes show specific capacity of 354.6 mAh g−1, yielding an impressive energy density of 461.0 Wh kg−1for aqueous ZIBs. This exceptional performance can be attributed to abrupt change in electrical conductivity upon thermal activation of MIT. This work underscores pivotal role of thermally activated MIT in finely tuning electrochemical performance of energy storage systems, prospecting a promising avenue for further advancements.

Abstract

In recent years, capacitive deionization (CDI) is reported as one of the emerging technologies developed with the purpose of water desalination. This work aims the use of supercapacitor electrodes for efficient removal of ions from water and contributes develepment of CDI technology. Towards the purpose, graphene based supercapacitor electrodes were developed and the use of these new materials for deionization purpose was explored in detail. The ion sorption behavior of the graphene electrodes developed from a commercially available graphene was analyzed at different electrical potentials and flow rates. Impact of operating parameters on sorption capacity was determined. At 20mL/min flow rate and 2.0V potential, the electrosorptive capacity of commercially available graphene electrodes could reach 12.5µmol/g. Our results showed that it is possible to develop supercapacitors from commercially available graphene material for the purpose of deionization, Son yıllarda, kapasitif deiyonizasyon (KDI) adı verilen ve kapasitörler aracılığı ile sudan iyonların giderilmesi amacıyla geliştirilen bu teknoloji su arıtımı için kullanılan yeni teknolojiler arasında öne çıkmaktadır. Bu çalışma kapsamında sudan iyonların giderilmesi için süperkapasitör elektrotların kullanılması ve KDI teknolojisinin geliştirilmesine katkıda bulunulması hedeflenmiştir. Bu amaç doğrultusunda, grafen bazlı süperkapasitör elektrotlar geliştirilmiş ve deiyonizasyon için bu yeni malzemelerin kullanımı detaylı olarak araştırılmıştır. Elektrotların iyon tutma özellikleri farklı elektrik potansiyelleri ve debilerde analiz edilmiştir. Elde edilen sonuçlara göre 20mL/dakika akış hızı ve 2,0V elektrik potansiyel uygulanarak geliştirilen grafen elektrotlar ile 12,5µmol/g iyon adsorpsiyon kapasitesine ulaşılmıştır. Sonuçlarımız doğrultusunda ticari olarak satın alınabilen grafen malzemesi ile sudan iyonların giderilmesi amacı ile elektrot üretmenin mümkün olduğu görülmüştür

49. Textile Supercapacitors-Based On Mno2/Swnt/Conducting Polymer Ternary Composites

Abstract

This paper describes a simple and fast process for the fabrication of flexible and textile-based supercapacitors. Symmetric electrodes made up of binder-free ternary composites of manganese oxide (MnO2) nanoparticles, single walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT) and a conducting polymer (either polyaniline (PANI) or poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly( styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT: PSS)) were layer-by-layer deposited onto cotton substrates by dip coating method. Solid-state supercapacitor devices were assembled using a gel electrolyte. Specific capacitances of 294 F/g and 246 F/g were obtained for MnO2/SWNT/PANI and MnO2/SWNT/PEDOT:PSS ternary nanocomposite supercapacitors, respectively. Power densities for these supercapacitors were 746.5W/kg and 640.5W/kg for MnO2/SWNT/PANI and MnO2/SWNT/PEDOT: PSS, respectively. Good capacity retention (more than 70%) upon cycling over 1000 times was achieved for both electrode compositions. Supercapacitors demonstrated in this work would be well suited as disposable power sources for wearable and intelligent textiles. Copyright (c) 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
