Introduction: Erythema nodosum (EN) is the most common form of panniculitis. EN can be idiopathic or secondary to an underlying systemic disease, infection, drug use, or tumor. CD5-positive diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (CD5+ DLBCL) is a relapsed and refractory lymphoma, and further understanding of its pathology is required. We report a case of newly diagnosed CD5+ DLBCL with concomitant EN. Within the scope of our search, there were no reports of CD5+ DLBCL complicated with EN. Case Presentation: A 79-year-old woman experienced swelling, warmth, redness, and pain in both legs and a mass lesion on the right side of the back at almost the same time. The respective lesions were diagnosed as EN and CD5+ DLBCL by biopsy. With chemotherapy, the lymphoma and EN improved in parallel courses. The patient has completed scheduled chemotherapy, and there has been no recurrence of swelling in the legs or mass on the right side of the back. Discussion: The lymphoma and EN developed simultaneously and followed a parallel clinical course after chemotherapy, suggesting that EN was a paraneoplastic symptom of CD5+ DLBCL. Recognizing and treating underlying malignancies in patients presenting with EN is crucial.

Background Immunosuppressive conditions within the tumor microenvironment (TME) can allow tumors to evade the immune system, including by hampering programmed death ligand 1 (PD-L1) inhibitor activity. Interleukin (IL)-8 contributes to immunosuppression and fibrosis in the TME. AMY109, a humanized anti-IL-8 monoclonal antibody, reduced fibrosis and decreased immunosuppressive cells in tumor tissue in animals. Combining AMY109 with atezolizumab (anti-PD-L1 antibody) may enhance its antitumor effects by making the TME more favorable to PD-L1 inhibition.Methods This multicenter, open-label, dose-escalation study evaluated the safety, pharmacokinetics, and clinical activity of AMY109 plus atezolizumab in patients with previously treated advanced solid tumors and Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status 0 or 1. Patients received AMY109 (2–45 mg/kg) plus atezolizumab (1200 mg) intravenously every 3 weeks in part 1, and AMY109 (15–45 mg/kg) plus atezolizumab (1200 mg) in part 2. Primary endpoints were the dose-limiting toxicity (DLT), safety, and pharmacokinetics of AMY109 and atezolizumab in Part 1, and safety and antitumor activity per investigator-assessed Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors 1.1 in part 2. Exploratory analyses of peripheral and tumor biomarker were conducted.Results Overall, 38 patients (18 in part 1 and 20 in part 2) were enrolled. Part 1 showed no DLTs and a dose-proportional increase in AMY109 exposure over 2–45 mg/kg, with no apparent change in mean atezolizumab serum concentrations across AMY109 dosing. Plasma IL-8 concentration accumulation was seen in all dose cohorts after AMY109 initiation. Grade 1–3 treatment-related adverse events (AEs) occurred in 21 of 38 patients (55%). Treatment-related serious AEs occurred in two patients (5%). No AEs led to treatment withdrawal. Partial responses (PRs) occurred in 2 of 38 patients; the confirmed objective response rate was 5%. These patients had uterocervical and pancreatic cancer, respectively, and had been treated for >500 days at the cut-off date: one had received 45 mg/kg of AMY109 throughout, and the other received 30 mg/kg of AMY109 until cycle 5, then 45 mg/kg thereafter.Conclusions With no DLTs, AMY109 plus atezolizumab was well tolerated in patients with advanced solid tumors, with no new safety signals. AMY109 showed a dose-proportional increase in exposure. The PRs in two patients were durable.

Abstract Background Familial encephalopathy with neuroserpin inclusion bodies (FENIB) is a rare genetic disorder characterized by progressive cognitive decline and myoclonic epilepsy, caused by pathogenic variants of SERPINI1. We reported a case of genetically confirmed FENIB with de novo H338R mutation in the SERPINI1, in which frontal deficits including inattention and disinhibition, and relevant atrophy in the vmPFC on brain MRI were observed in the early stage of the disease. Case presentation A 23-year-old Japanese man presented with progressive inattention and disinhibition over 4 years followed by myoclonic epilepsy. The whole-genome sequencing and filtering analysis showed de novo heterozygous H338R mutation in the SERPINI1, confirming the diagnosis of FENIB. Single-case voxel-based morphometry using brain magnetic resonance imaging obtained at the initial visit revealed focal gray matter volume loss in the ventromedial prefrontal cortices, which is presumed to be associated with inattention and disinhibition. Conclusion Frontal deficits including inattention and disinhibition can be the presenting symptoms of patients with FENIB. Single-case voxel-based morphometry may be useful for detecting regional atrophy of the frontal lobe in FENIB. Detecting these abnormalities in the early stage of disease may be key findings for differentiating FENIB from other causes of progressive myoclonic epilepsy.

Hoof and leg problems in racehorses can cause serious injuries and decrease their value. Although therapeutic shoeing using special horseshoes can increase the effectiveness of veterinary care, it is labor-intensive and burdensome for farriers. A three-dimensional (3D) printed horseshoe fabricated by additive manufacturing has high design flexibility for use in special horseshoes. However, the mechanical properties of 3D printed plastics for use as horseshoes remain unclear. In this study, a proposed 3D printed plastic was subjected to degradation tests under the simulated equine growth environment, and changes in strength during the period of use were investigated. It was found that the strength of polylactic acid and polycarbonate, which are commonly used for 3D printing, was not significantly affected by the environment.

Scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses were combined to clarify the ultraviolet light-induced surface changes of WO3 in air. Identical-location STEM (IL-STEM) analysis showed that the WO3 particle surface was covered with an amorphous thin film after ultraviolet irradiation in air. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis showed that hydrocarbon decomposition and the formation of carboxyl/hydroxyl species occurred. These results suggested that the amorphous thin films consisted of photocatalytic oxidative species of hydrocarbon. The IL-STEM analysis could detect small light-induced changes. This technique will be useful for the microscopic characterization of photocatalysis or photoinduced hydrophilic conversion.

Objectives: To investigate the role of urine spermine and spermine risk score in predicting prostate cancer (PCa) diagnoses in combination with multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI). Methods: Three hundred forty seven consecutive men with elevated prostate-specific antigen (PSA) with mpMRI examination were prospectively enrolled in this study. In 265 patients with PSA levels between 4 and20 ng/ml, pre-biopsy urine samples were analyzed for spermine levels with ultra-high performance liquid chromatography (UPLC-MS/MS). Transperineal image-guided prostate biopsies with 16-18 cores were performed. Logistic regressions were used to form different models for the prediction of the PCa, and the performances were compared using the area under the curve (AUC). Results: The median serum PSA level and prostate volume were 7.4 ng/mL and 33.9 mL, respectively. PCa and high-grade PCa (ISUP group ≥2, HGPCa) were diagnosed in 66.0% (175/265) and 132/265 (49.8%) cases, respectively. Abstract Embryo transfer (ET) is an essential reproductive technology for the production of new animal strains and maintenance of genetic resources. We developed a method, named Easy-ET, to induce pseudopregnancy in female rats by artificial stimulation using sonic vibration instead of mating with vasectomized males. This study examined the application of this method for the induction of pseudopregnancy in mice. Offspring were obtained from two-cell embryos transferred into females with pseudopregnancy induced using sonic vibration in proestrus on the day before embryo transfer. Furthermore, high developmental rates of offspring were observed when pronuclear and two-cell embryos were transferred to females in estrus that were stimulated on the day of embryo transfer. Genome-edited mice were also obtained using frozen-warmed pronuclear embryos with clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeat (CRISPR)/CRISPR-associated system (Cas) nucleases introduced using the technique for animal knockout system by electroporation (TAKE) method, which were transferred to females with pseudopregnancy induced on the day of embryo transfer. This study demonstrated that induction of pseudopregnancy by sonic vibration was also possible in mice.

IntroductionCytomegalovirus (CMV) is well established to be an independent risk factor for graft loss after kidney transplantation (KTx). Monitoring for CMV in the chronic phase is not defined in the current guideline. The effects of CMV infection, including asymptomatic CMV viremia, in the chronic phase are unclear.MethodsWe performed a single-center retrospective study to investigate incidence of CMV infection in the chronic phase, defined as more than 1 year after KTx. We included 205 patients who received KTx between April 2004 and December 2017. The CMV pp65 antigenemia assays to detect CMV viremia were continuously performed every 1–3 months.ResultsThe median duration of the follow-up was 80.6 (13.1–172.1) months. Asymptomatic CMV infection and CMV disease were observed in 30.7% and 2.9% in the chronic phase, respectively. We found that 10–20% of patients had CMV infections in each year after KTx which did not change over 10 years. The history of CMV infection in the early phase (within 1 year after KTx) and chronic rejection were significantly associated with CMV viremia in the chronic phase. CMV viremia in the chronic phase was significantly associated with graft loss.DiscussionThis is the first study to examine the incidence of CMV viremia for 10 years post KTx. Preventing latent CMV infection may decrease chronic rejection and graft loss after KTx.

Introduction: The phase III IMbrave150 study established atezolizumab + bevacizumab as the global standard of care in patients with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). This exploratory analysis examined the impact of bevacizumab interruption due to bevacizumab adverse events of special interest (AESIs). Methods: Patients in IMbrave150 who were randomized to atezolizumab + bevacizumab and received treatment for ≥6 months (to reduce immortal time bias) were included in group A-1 if bevacizumab had ever been skipped due to bevacizumab AESIs or to group A-2 otherwise. Efficacy analyses included overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) by whether bevacizumab was skipped (group A-1 vs. A-2). PFS was evaluated per independent review facility (IRF)-assessed Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumours (RECIST) version 1.1 and HCC-modified RECIST (IRF-HCC mRECIST). Safety was also evaluated. Results: Of the 210 patients who received ≥6 months of atezolizumab + bevacizumab, 69 were assigned to group A-1 and 141 to A-2. At data cutoff (August 20, 2020), hazard ratio (HR) for OS was 1.04 (95% CI: 0.64, 1.69) for group A-1 versus A-2. HR for PFS was 1.07 (95% CI: 0.74, 1.55) per IRF-assessed RECIST 1.1 and 1.10 (95% CI: 0.76, 1.59; 15.5 vs. 9.7 months) per IRF-HCC mRECIST for group A-1 versus A-2. Safety profiles for atezolizumab and bevacizumab were largely similar between groups. More group A-1 patients had grade 3/4 adverse events. A separate analysis investigating the impact of immortal time bias in patients who received ≥3 months of atezolizumab + bevacizumab supported the appropriateness of the ≥6-month landmark analysis. Discussion/Conclusion: Efficacy was similar between patients who skipped bevacizumab due to bevacizumab AESIs and those who did not. Although this comparison was nonrandomized and exploratory, results suggest that skipping bevacizumab due to bevacizumab AESIs did not considerably impact the efficacy and safety of atezolizumab + bevacizumab.

Abstract Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) is an effective reproductive technique for obtaining rat offspring using preserved sperm with low or no motility. However, rat oocytes undergo spontaneous activation immediately after retrieval from the oviduct and poorly develop after ICSI unless it is performed quickly. Here, we evaluated whether treatment with MG132, the proteasome inhibitor, suppresses the spontaneous activation of oocytes before and during ICSI. After retrieval from the oviducts, the rate of development into morula and blastocyst from the oocytes cultured in vitro for 1 h prior to ICSI significantly decreased compared with that from the control oocytes subject to ICSI without culture (7% versus 36%). However, a higher proportion of oocytes treated with MG132 for 0, 1, and 3 h before and during ICSI developed into morulae and blastocysts (70%, 60%, and 52%, respectively). Offspring were obtained from oocytes treated with MG132 for 0 and 1 h before and during ICSI (percentage: 31%). Altogether, MG132 could suppress the spontaneous activation of rat oocytes and increase embryonic development after ICSI.

Abstract The RIβ subunit of cAMP-dependent protein kinase (PKA), encoded by Prkar1b, is a neuronal isoform of the type I regulatory subunit of PKA. Mice lacking the RIβ subunit exhibit normal long-term potentiation (LTP) in the Schaffer collateral pathway of the hippocampus and normal behavior in the open-field and fear conditioning tests. Here, we combined genetic, electrophysiological, and behavioral approaches to demonstrate that the RIβ subunit was involved in body tremor, LTP in the Schaffer collateral pathway, and fear conditioning memory in rats. Genetic analysis of WTC-furue, a mutant strain with spontaneous tremors, revealed a deletion in the Prkar1b gene of the WTC-furue genome. Prkar1b-deficient rats created by the CRISPR/Cas9 system exhibited body tremor. Hippocampal slices from mutant rats showed deficient LTP in the Schaffer collateral–CA1 synapse. Mutant rats also exhibited decreased freezing time following contextual and cued fear conditioning, as well as increased exploratory behavior in the open field. These findings indicate the roles of the RIβ subunit in tremor pathogenesis and contextual and cued fear memory, and suggest that the hippocampal and amygdala roles of this subunit differ between mice and rats and that rats are therefore beneficial for exploring RIβ function.

Abstract Background There is no established treatment after failure of proven therapies for patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma. Case presentation A 66-year-old Japanese man with metastatic renal cell carcinoma became refractory to interferon α and sunitinib therapies. He started treatment with axitinib at 10 mg/day, and the dose was gradually tapered down to 4 mg/day because of intolerable adverse events. His metastatic lesions shrank; however, he could not continue due to the adverse events. He started fourth-line therapy with nivolumab; however, the metastatic lesions increased. Rechallenge with axitinib 4 mg/day was started, and the dose was reduced to 2 mg/day because of adverse events. Subsequently, the adverse events became controllable, and the metastatic lesions were maintained at reduced size. Conclusion Therapeutic drug monitoring of axitinib could play an important role in the development of safe and effective therapeutic treatment and individualization of these medications.

BackgroundIn many malignancies including intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (iCCA), prognostic significance of host-related inflammatory / immunonutritional markers have attracted a lot of attention. However, it is unclear which is the strongest prognostic indicator for iCCA among these markers. The aim of this study was to firstly evaluate the prognostic utility of inflammatory / immunonutritional markers in resected iCCA patients using a multiple comparison in addition to a new marker, lymphocyte-to-C-reactive protein (CRP) score.MethodsA total of sixty iCCA patients, who underwent surgical resection between October 2004 and April 2019, were enrolled in this study. Their clinical and pathological data were retrospectively assessed using univariate and multivariate analysis to determine prognostic predictors for disease specific survival (DSS). Moreover, these patients, who were divided into high and low groups based on lymphocyte-to-CRP score, were compared these survival outcomes using Kaplan-Meier analysis with a log-rank test.ResultsIn multivariate analysis, the significant prognostic factors were preoperative lymphocyte-to-CRP score (p = 0.008), preoperative CRP-to-albumin ratio (CAR; p = 0.017), pathological T category (p = 0.003), and pathological vascular invasion (p < 0.001). Resected iCCA patients with a low lymphocyte-to-CRP score (score 0) had significant better prognosis than patients with a high score (score 1 or 2) (p = 0.016). Notably, the mortality of the high lymphocyte-to-CRP score group did not show statistically difference from the poor mortality of unresected iCCA patients (p = 0.204).ConclusionsPreoperative lymphocyte-to-CRP score was the strongest prognostic indicator in iCCA patients with surgical resection. In these patients, early intervention with nutritional support should be considered prior to operation.

Peripancreatic fluid collections have been observed in most patients with postoperative pancreatic fistula after distal pancreatectomy; however, optimal management remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the management and outcomes of patients with postoperative pancreatic fistula and verify the significance of computed tomography values for predicting peripancreatic fluid infections after distal pancreatectomy. We retrospectively investigated 259 consecutive patients who underwent distal pancreatectomy. Grade B postoperative pancreatic fistula patients were divided into two subgroups (B-antibiotics group and B-intervention group) and outcomes were compared. Predictive factor analysis of peripancreatic fluid infection was performed. Clinically relevant postoperative pancreatic fistulas developed in 88 (34.0%) patients. The duration of hospitalization was significantly longer in the B-intervention (n = 54) group than in the B-antibiotics group (n = 31; 41 vs. 17 days, p < 0.001). Computed tomography values of the infected peripancreatic fluid collections were significantly higher than those of the non-infected peripancreatic fluid collections (26.3 vs. 16.1 Hounsfield units, respectively; p < 0.001). The outcomes of the patients with grade B postoperative pancreatic fistulas who received therapeutic antibiotics only were considerably better than those who underwent interventions. Computed tomography values may be useful in predicting peripancreatic fluid collection infection after distal pancreatectomy.

Three tailored tempering processes without die heating were developed to manufacture tailored parts having high strength and high ductility zones. In a 1st forming stage, only the high strength zone was formed with the partial dies in order to decrease the cooling rate in the high ductility zone by no contact with the dies, and then both zones were formed with the sufficiently wide dies in a 2nd forming stage. Two cooling stages were introduced to prevent the martensite transformation of the high ductility zone. The 2nd cooling stage was omitted by partial forced cooling in the 1st stage having a higher cooling rate. The 2nd forming stage was further omitted by keeping high temperature in the high strength zone and by slowly cooling the high ductility zone in the 1st cooling stage. A tailored part having hardnesses of about 470 and 230 HV1 in the high strength and high ductility zones, respectively was produced, and the cycle time was 15 s, 4 shots per minute.

A 67-year-old man was diagnosed with non-muscle invasive bladder cancer and underwent transurethral resection of the lesions in August 2017. The pathological findings revealed high-grade urothelial carcinoma. The tumor relapsed as urothelial carcinoma with sarcomatoid/osteosarcoma variant with vascular invasion, and transurethral resection was performed in December 2017. He underwent laparoscopic radical cystoprostatectomy and orthotopic neobladder reconstruction using ileum in March 2018. The patient developed lung metastasis in July 2018. He underwent four courses of chemotherapy with doxorubicin and thoracoscopic left lower lobectomy of the lung in October 2018.

Myeloid sarcoma is an extramedullary tumor composed of immature myeloid cells and occurs in various extramedullary sites. We report a 48-year-old man diagnosed with myeloid sarcoma in the epididymis. He was admitted to our hospital due to a painless right intrascrotal mass. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a 30 mm tumor in the right epididymis, and we subsequently performed right high orchiectomy. The pathological diagnosis was myeloid sarcoma. Bone marrow aspiration and biopsy revealed no hematological disease, and cytogenetic analysis in the bone marrow showed normal karyotype. He was diagnosed with isolated myeloid sarcoma in the epididymis. Six months after the operation, myeloid sarcoma recurred in the para aorta and left sub-diaphragm. Bone marrow examination revealed myelodysplastic syndrome, and cytogenetic analysis showed 46, XY. We performed surgical resection of the recurrent mass, and cytogenetic analysis showed 47, XY, +21. He was diagnosed with recurrent MS with adult-onset trisomy 21. Although the effect of trisomy 21 on prognosis is unknown, the patient is currently undergoing systemic chemotherapy with maintained remission.

Abstract A number of autoimmune diseases are associated with the genotypes of human leukocyte antigen class II (HLA), some of which present peptides derived from self-proteins, resulting in clonal expansion of self-reactive T cells. Therefore, selective inhibition of self-peptide loading onto such disease-associated HLA could ameliorate the diseases. To effectively identify such compounds, in this study, we established, for the first time, a cell- and 96-well microplate-based high-throughput screening system for inhibitors of antigen presentation. A panel of DRB1 genes plus DRA*01:01 gene were expressed in HEK293T cells and in 3T3 cells, and their binding with biotinylated known self-antigen peptides was measured by flow cytometry. HLA-DR1 (DRB1*01:01) and DR15 (DRB1*15:01) showed a high affinity with myelin basic protein peptide (MBP83-98). Therefore, in 96-well plate wells, MBP83-99 was allowed to bind to DR1 or DR15 on 3T3 cells in competition with a test compound, and the HLA-bound peptide was detected by streptavidin-conjugated β-galactosidase, thereby identifying inhibitor compounds for rheumatoid arthritis or multiple sclerosis. Our assay system has a potential for broad applications, including designing peptide vaccines.

Nuchal-type fibroma is a rare benign fibrous tumor that is mainly located in the nuchal region. However, about one-third of the tumors occur in the extranuchal region. This tumor has specific histopathologic findings; it is composed of dense paucicellular, sclerotic, thick and haphazardly arranged collagen fibers. We report a 58-year-old man who presented with perineal nuchal-type fibroma originating in the perirectal region. This tumor was surgically excised; however, the fibrous band from tumor reached into levator ani muscle and was resected incompletely. Continuous follow up is needed even though this tumor is benign. We report a 70-year-old woman diagnosed with unicentric Castleman’s disease with a contrast well-enhanced retroperitoneal tumor of 25 mm in diameter that located between the aorta and inferior vena cava. The imaging finding did not suggest any specific features, and no other lesion was detected. Laboratory examinations indicating malignant lymphoma such as soluble interleukin-2 were all negative. We resected the retroperitoneal tumor laparoscopically, and histopathological examination revealed hyaline vascular type Castleman’s disease. Although complete resection of hyaline vascular type unicentric Castleman’s disease results in a good prognosis, a late relapse has been reported and long-term follow-up is warranted.

A 6-year-old neutered male Yorkshire Terrier presented with recurrent pericardial effusion. Although clinical examinations including computed tomography were inconclusive, an exploratory thoracotomy revealed multiple small nodules and plaques on the inner surface of the pericardial sac (Day 1). A subtotal pericardiectomy was performed to prevent cardiac tamponade due to the increasing pericardial effusion, and the resected section of the pericardium was histopathologically diagnosed with mesothelioma. After surgery, chemotherapy with intrathoracic carboplatin was commenced. During the course of the treatment, a detailed follow-up ultrasonographic scan was performed to detect early lesions disseminated on the pleura, originating from the primary pericardial mesothelioma. On Day 101, the minute pleural nodules, which were disseminated lesions as predicted, were successfully imaged by ultrasonography. As the clinical stage advanced, the nodules were observed to gradually increase in size and number, implying tumor progression. These observations highlight the feasibility of ultrasonography in detecting minute disseminated lesions at an early stage, monitoring tumor progression, and thereby, predicting the prognosis of canine pericardial mesothelioma.

A 44-year-old woman visited a hospital with microscopic hematuria in June 2009. Computed tomography showed a large bladder diverticulum at right lateral wall and urachal remnant. Cystoscopic examination showed a large diverticulum at the right lateral wall that closes to the dome. She was followed up closely without therapeutic intervention; however, the residual urine increased gradually and frequent bladder diverticulitis developed. She underwent laparoscopic bladder diverticulectomy and excision of the urachal remnant simultaneously without any complications in August 2017. Laparoscopic approach for a large bladder diverticulum and urachal remnant is useful with safe, effective, and minimally invasive.

In recent years, ultrafine-grained steel has been gaining increasing attention as a high-performance material. Accordingly, it is necessary to develop an efficient production method for ultrafine-grained steel. Severe plastic deformation is a critical factor that causes grain subdivision into ultrafine grains less than 1 µm in diameter. In this study, the effects of plastic deformation on the microstructure and static recrystallization of pure iron were studied by comparing orthogonal cutting and rolling. Orthogonal cutting yielded ultrafine grains with a diameter of 0.2 µm. It was found that a high strain rate in the thin shear plane generated during the cutting process caused a uniform subdivision of grains, and this uniform plastic deformation resulted in the uniform recrystallization of grains. In addition, a theoretical model was developed, and it was revealed that the number of recrystallized grains depended on the fraction of a large-misorientation area constructed with geometrically necessary boundaries (GNBs). It was suggested that the cutting process was more advantageous than rolling in producing ultrafine recrystallized grains because cutting could apply severe plastic strain uniformly on a work material, effectively generating GNBs.

In this paper, a simple process to fabricate ordered Au nanodot arrays up to 520 nm in diameter that respond to infrared light is developed, and the feasibility of its application to infrared plasmonic sensors is shown. The developed process utilizes thermal dewetting to agglomerate a coated gold film into nanodots. It was difficult to produce large nanodots that responded to infrared light owing to dot separation. In this paper, therefore, the mechanism of dot agglomeration by thermal dewetting is studied via an experiment and theoretical model, and conditions to form single nanodots are clarified. Furthermore, Au nanodot arrays of 100 nm to 520 nm in diameter were fabricated by this process, and their absorption spectra were analyzed. In addition, an analysis of the change in the peak wavelength against the refractive index indicates the possibility of further improvement of the sensitivity of the infrared plasmon sensors.

Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) is known as an effective additive to improve the hydrogen de/absorption properties of hydrogen storage materials consisting of light elements. Herein, we report the unique hydrogen desorption properties of LiAlH4/h-BN composites, which were prepared by ball-milling. The desorption profiles of the composite indicated the decrease of melting temperature of LiAlH4, the delay of desorption kinetics in the first step, and the enhancement of the kinetics in the second step, compared with milled LiAlH4. Li3AlH6 was also formed in the composite after desorption in the first step, suggesting h-BN would have a catalytic effect on the desorption kinetics of Li3AlH6. Finally, the role of h-BN on the desorption process of LiAlH4 was discussed by comparison with the desorption properties of LiAlH4/X (X = graphite, LiCl and LiI) composites, suggesting the enhancement of Li ion mobility in the LiAlH4/h-BN composite.

Basiliximab is a recently developed immunosuppressive agent for the prevention of acute allograft rejection in renal transplant recipients. The combination use of basiliximab and a calcineurin inhibitor was suggested to be more effective in comparison to immunosuppressive therapy using calcineurin inhibitor without basiliximab. Cyclosporine has been generally administered with basiliximab for renal transplant recipients. However, in cases of tacrolimus-based immunosuppressive regimen, the clinical efficacy and safety of combined use of tacrolimus and basiliximab remains to be elucidated. This study evaluated the tacrolimus pharmacological efficacy using a lymphocyte immunosuppressant sensitivity test (LIST) with MTT assay procedures in 16 cases of renal transplant recipients treated by tacrolimus without basiliximab and in 13 cases treated by tacrolimus in combination with basiliximab. The rate of acute rejection episodes in the recipients treated with tacrolimus plus basiliximab was 1/13 (7.7%), whereas the rate in the recipients treated with tacrolimus without basiliximab was 6/16 (37.5%). The recipients were divided into two groups according to their peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) sensitivity to tacrolimus [i.e., including a tacrolimus high sensitivity group (IC 50 1.0 ng/ml). In the recipients treated with tacrolimus without basiliximab, the rate of acute rejection episodes in the tacrolimus high sensitivity group was 1/10 (10.0%), which was significantly lower than the rate in the low sensitivity group of 5/6 (83.3%; p = 0.008). The incidence of cytomegalovirus infection was not significantly different between the tacrolimus high and the low sensitivity groups of the recipients treated with tacrolimus with and without basiliximab. Therefore, in the case of selected tacrolimus-based immunosuppressive therapy for renal transplant recipients, the tacrolimus pharmacological efficacy should be evaluated using LIST at a time just before the transplant procedure in order to accurately predict allograft rejection. The data also suggested that low tacrolimus sensitivity recipients should be treated with tacrolimus-based immunosuppressive therapy in combination with basiliximab.
