1. Comparison of DLK incidence after laser in situ keratomileusis associated with two femtosecond lasers: Femto LDV and IntraLase FS60

Methods: A total of 818 consecutive myopic eyes had LASIK performed using either Femto LDV or IntraLase FS60 for flap creation. The same excimer laser, the Allegretto Wave® Eye-Q Laser, was used for correcting refractive errors for all patients. In the preoperative examination, uncorrected distance visual acuity, corrected distance visual acuity, and manifest refraction spherical equivalent were measured. At the postop examination, the same examinations were performed along with a slit-lamp biomicroscopic examination, and patients with DLK were classified into stages. For the statistical analysis of the DLK occurrence rate and the visual and refractive outcomes, the Mann-Whitney’s U-test was used. Results: In the Femto LDV group with 514 eyes, 42 (8.17%) had DLK. In the IntraLase FS60 group with 304 eyes, 114 (37.5%) had DLK. There was a statistically significant difference in the DLK incidence rate between these groups (P < 0.0001). Both groups had excellent visual and refractive outcomes. Although low levels of DLK were observed for both groups, they did not affect visual acuity. Conclusion: While there were significantly fewer incidences of low level DLK when using Femto LDV, neither femtosecond laser induced high levels of DLK, and any postoperative DLK cleared up within 1 week. 3. Micro-structure of damage in thermally activated fracture of Lennard-Jones systems

Abstract

We investigate the effect of thermal fluctuations on the critical stress and the micro-structure of damage preceding macroscopic fracture of Lennard-Jones solids under a constant external load. Based on molecular dynamics simulations of notched specimens at finite temperature, we show that the crystalline structure gets distorted ahead of the crack in the secondary creep regime. The damage profile characterizing the spatial distribution of lattice distortions is well described by an exponential form. The characteristic length of the exponential form provides the scale of damage which is found to be an increasing function of the temperature: At low temperature damage is strongly localized to the crack tip, while at high temperature damage extends to a broader range leading to more efficient relaxation of overloads. As a consequence, the stress intensity factor decreases with increasing temperature. The final macroscopic failure of the system occurs suddenly which is initiated by the creation of vacancies and voids. Abstract

We construct asymptotic arguments for the relative efficiency of rejection-free Monte Carlo (MC) methods compared to the standard MC method. We find that the efficiency is proportional to $\exp{({const} \beta)}$ in the Ising, $\sqrt{\beta}$ in the classical XY, and $\beta$ in the classical Heisenberg spin systems with inverse temperature $\beta$, regardless of the dimension. The efficiency in hard particle systems is also obtained, and found to be proportional to $(\rhoc -\rho)^{-d}$ with the closest packing density $\rhoc$, density $\rho$, and dimension $d$ of the systems. We construct and implement a rejection-free Monte Carlo method for the hard-disk system. Abstract

We construct a rejection-free Monte Carlo method for the hard-disk system. Rejection-free Monte Carlo methods preserve the time-evolution behavior of the standard Monte Carlo method, and this relationship is confirmed for our method by observing nonequilibrium relaxation of a bond-orientational order parameter. The rejection-free method gives a greater computational efficiency than the standard method at high densities. The rejection free method is implemented in a shrewd manner using optimization methods to calculate a rejection probability and to update the system. This method should allow an efficient study of the dynamics of two-dimensional solids at high density., Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures. Abstract

Density fluctuations in traffic current are studied by computer simulations using the deterministic coupled map lattice model on a closed single-lane circuit. By calculating a power spectral density of temporal density fluctuations at a local section, we find a power-law behavior, $\sim 1/f^{1.8}$, on the frequency $f$, in non-congested flow phase. The distribution of the headway distance $h$ also shows the power law like $\sim 1/h^{3.0} $ at the same time. Abstract

Effects of a bottleneck in a linear trafficway is investigated using a simple cellular automaton model. Introducing a blockage site which transmit cars at some transmission probability into the rule-184 cellular automaton, we observe three different phases with increasing car concentration: Besides the free phase and the jam phase, which exist already in the pure rule-184 model, the mixed phase of these two appears at intermediate concentration with well-defined phase boundaries. This mixed phase, where cars pile up behind the blockage to form a jam region, is characterized by a constant flow. In the thermodynamic limit, we obtain the exact expressions for several characteristic quantities in terms of the car density and the transmission rate. Abstract

type:Article, Dog treats might be contaminated with Salmonella. In Canada and the USA, outbreaks of human salmonellosis related to exposure to animal-derived dog treats were reported. Consequently, surveillance data on Salmonella contamination of dog treats have been gathered in many countries, but not in Japan. In the current study, we investigated whether dog treats in Japan were contaminated with Salmonella. Overall, 303 dog treats (of which 255 were domestically produced) were randomly collected and the presence of Salmonella investigated. Seven samples were positive for Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica. Among these isolates, three were identified as serovar 4,5,12:i:–; two were serovar Rissen; and two were serovar Thompson. All serovar 4,5,12:i:– and Thompson isolates were resistant to one or more drugs. Two serovar Rissen isolates were fully susceptible to all tested antimicrobial agents. All Salmonella isolates were susceptible to cefotaxime, ciprofloxacin and nalidixic acid. The gene blaTEM was detected in two serovar 4,5,12:i:– isolates. The blaCTX−M and blaCMY genes were not detected in any isolates. This study demonstrated that dog treats in Japan could constitute a potential source of dog and human Salmonella infections, including multidrug-resistant Salmonella isolates.

Abstract

Carbon deposition characteristics of Ni-Cu alloy and Ni/CeO2 composite were evaluated. Filamentous carbon was observed on Ni-Cu alloy when Cu contents were less than 50 mol.%. But, no carbon were deposited when Cu contents were 80 mol.% and 100 mol.%. To increase Cu content was effective to reduce the amount of carbon deposition. In the case of Ni-CeO2 composite, no carbon was deposited in the range of the experiments. 42. Ni-Scsz Anode Deterioration by Tar in Biomass Gasified Gas and Trial Production of an Anode Resistant to Tar

Abstract

In order to fabricate a new anode that is durable against tar in biomass­gasified gas, solution impregnation method was applied. And, the anodes before and after the power generation experiments were examined with a SEM and an EDS. In addition, the tar exposure test of the anode was also conducted. By applying solution impregnation method, the anodes were impregnated with nano­scale fine nickel particles as expected. Furthermore, the power generation performance of the cells was equivalent to that of the cells fabricated by the conventional method. However after the experiments, grain growth and sintering of the fine nickel particles was observed. In addition, carbon deposition was also observed on the anode after the tar exposure test; therefore applying the solution impregnation method does not contribute to improve the durability against tar. One of the reasons is that the nickel particles size distribution on the anode after the experiments was equivalent to that on the anode fabricated by the conventional method because of grain growth and sintering. Abstract

It is well known that there are various adverse effects during chemotherapy for cancer treatment. A taste disorder is also seen in 35-70% of patients. It has been reported that a zinc deficiency is associated with the development of these alterations in taste sensation. The purpose of this pilot study was to determine whether the zinc including infusion had the effect on taste disorder in patients with lung cancer. Taste disorder was evaluated as the increase in electrical taste thresholds using an electrogustometer. The plasma zinc concentration was also measured. Although there was no significant correlation, the increase in taste thresholds was detected in many patients who had a low zinc concentration even before receiving chemotherapy. Moreover, after 2 weeks of chemotherapy, almost all patients who did not have a zinc containing infusion showed development of taste disorder (5/5, 100% at chorda tympani area; 4/5, 80% at glossopharyngeal area), whereas no development of taste disorder was observed in those patients receiving a zinc containing infusion. These results suggest the possibility that the administration of zinc during chemotherapy could be a useful supportive therapy for preventing taste disorder and to help maintain a better quality of life.
