Subretinal fibrosis is the end-stage sequelae of neovascular age-related macular degeneration. It causes local damage to photoreceptors, retinal pigment epithelium, and choroidal vessels, which leads to permanent central vision loss of patients with neovascular age-related macular degeneration. The pathogenesis of subretinal fibrosis is complex, and the underlying mechanisms are largely unknown. Therefore, there are no effective treatment options. A thorough understanding of the pathogenesis of subretinal fibrosis and its related mechanisms is important to elucidate its complications and explore potential treatments. The current article reviews several aspects of subretinal fibrosis, including the current understanding on the relationship between neovascular age-related macular degeneration and subretinal fibrosis; multimodal imaging techniques for subretinal fibrosis; animal models for studying subretinal fibrosis; cellular and non-cellular constituents of subretinal fibrosis; pathophysiological mechanisms involved in subretinal fibrosis, such as aging, infiltration of macrophages, different sources of mesenchymal transition to myofibroblast, and activation of complement system and immune cells; and several key molecules and signaling pathways participating in the pathogenesis of subretinal fibrosis, such as vascular endothelial growth factor, connective tissue growth factor, fibroblast growth factor 2, platelet-derived growth factor and platelet-derived growth factor receptor-β, transforming growth factor-β signaling pathway, Wnt signaling pathway, and the axis of heat shock protein 70–Toll-like receptors 2/4–interleukin-10. This review will improve the understanding of the pathogenesis of subretinal fibrosis, allow the discovery of molecular targets, and explore potential treatments for the management of subretinal fibrosis.

Abstract Biochar, produced from the thermochemical conversion of biomass waste, has various applications owing to its broad utility and advantageous properties. This study employs a scientometric approach to comprehensively assess the advancements in biochar application from 2022 to 2023. Utilizing 13,357 bibliographic records sourced from the Web of Science Core Collection with the search term “biochar”, the analysis focuses on authorship, national contributions, and keyword trends. Findings demonstrate a continual rise in annual publications since 2009, albeit with a moderated growth rate in 2023. China leads in publication outputs, followed by USA and India, with Hailong Wang emerging as a prominent figure in biochar research. Keyword co-occurrence analyses identify key research themes such as biochar’s role in climate change mitigation, easing salinity and drought stress, immobilizing toxic metals, degrading organic pollutants, serving as additives in anaerobic digestion, and functioning as electrodes in microbial fuel cells. Among these, biochar’s application for global climate change mitigation gains significant attention, while its utilization as electrodes in microbial fuel cells emerges as a promising research frontier, indicating the growing need for sustainable energy sources. The study also outlines critical research gaps and future priorities for enhancing biochar application. Overall, it highlights the diverse applicability of biochar and offers valuable insight into research progression and forthcoming directions in biochar studies. Graphical Abstract

Abstract Antibiotics, as emerging persistent pollutants, pose significant threats to human health. The effective and low-cost removal of ciprofloxacin (CIP) from wastewater has become an important research focus. In this study, fly ash (FA) was used as the raw material, and modified fly ash (MFA) was prepared by varying microwave power, alkali concentration, and immersion time to investigate its adsorption characteristics for CIP. Results showed that the optimal preparation conditions for MFA with the most effective adsorption of CIP, using the Box-Behnken response surface methodology, were a microwave power of 480 W, an alkali concentration of 1.5 mol/L, and a modification time of 3 h. Scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction analyses revealed that after modification, the glassy structure of FA is destroyed, the specific surface area is increased, and obvious hydroxyl O–H absorption peaks appear. Both FA and MFA exhibited adsorption processes for CIP that conformed to pseudo-second-order kinetics and the Langmuir equation. Maximum adsorption of CIP (9.61 and 12.67 mg/g) was achieved at pH = 6. With increasing temperature, the adsorption capacity of both FA and MFA for CIP decreased, indicating an exothermic process. The adsorption capacity of CIP decreased with increasing ion concentration, with the impact order of ions being Al3+ > Ca2+ > Na+. The results show that pore filling, electrostatic interaction, ion exchange and complexation are the main ways of CIP adsorption by FA. Microwave alkali modified fly ash is an economical and efficient adsorbent for CIP removal in water, realizing the purpose of “treating waste with waste”. This study provides a scientific basis for controlling CIP treatment in wastewater.

Highlights This review systematically summarizes the source of electricity, the key choice of catalyst, and the potentiality of electrolyte for prospective hydrogen generation. Each section provides comprehensive overview, detailed comparison and obvious advantages in these system configurations. The problems of hydrogen generation from electrolytic water splitting and directions of next-generation green hydrogen in the future are discussed and outlooked.

Given the reduction of freshwater resources, saline-alkaline aquaculture has emerged as an effective approach to expand the fishery's accessible space. High carbonate alkalinity (CA) is a major stressor for aquatic organisms in saline-alkaline environments. Paramisgurnus dabryanus is a potential species for culture in saline-alkaline water, making it an ideal model for investigating the physiological responses and tolerance mechanisms to CA exposure in freshwater fishes. In the current study, P. dabryanus were exposed to 15 and 30 mmol/L NaHCO3, combining blood biochemical, gill histological, transcriptomic, and metabolomic methods for conjoint analysis of response mechanisms. After 28-d exposure, the gill ventilation frequency of P. dabryanus decreased significantly, gill lamellae twisted and atrophied, and gill filament epithelial cells proliferated, potentially limiting gas exchange, whereas the accessory air-breathing frequency increased significantly, possibly for greater oxygen uptake. Serum osmolality and blood pH remained relatively steady, while serum ammonia levels rose significantly. A total of 3718 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and 205 differential metabolites (DMs) were identified between the control group and 30 mmol/L NaHCO3 group, involved in ion transport (Na+/K+-ATPase, V-type ATPase, carbonic anhydrase, and ABC transporters), ammonia transport (Rh glycoproteins and Aquaporins), amino acid metabolism, carbohydrate metabolism, and fatty acid metabolism. Furthermore, DEGs were significantly associated with cell-cell/ extracellular matrix interaction and protein synthesis. An integrated multi-omics analysis revealed the activation of carbon metabolism and TCA cycle. These results indicate that in response to CA exposure, P. dabryanus may facilitate carrier-mediated ion and ammonia transport to maintain the internal osmotic equilibrium and lessen the deleterious effects of blocked ammonia excretion. Meanwhile, amino acid metabolism and protein synthesis are disturbed, P. dabryanus can modulate carbohydrate catabolism to maintain energy homeostasis. The above findings provide novel insights into saline-alkaline adaptation in freshwater fishes, paving the way for future research and development of saline-alkaline-tolerant Cobitidae strains.

The recycling of fruit peel resources is a current research hotspot. This study screened and configured a composite extractant consisting of peel and chemical extractant through extraction experiments and explored the heavy metals(HMs) release effect. The results showed that citrus reticulata(CR), citrullus lanatus (CL), 0.16 mol·L−1 nitrilotriacetic acid(NTA) with 0.04 mol·L−1 oxalic acid(NO5), and 0.12 mol·L−1NTA with 0.08 mol·L−1tartaric acid(NT4) had the strongest extraction ability. After the cross-combination was optimized, CR-NO5 (1:50, 6 h, 35 °C) and CL-NT4 (1:50, 36 h, 45 °C) had the highest extraction rates for Cd and Zn, which were 92.6 % and 98.4 %, respectively. The CL series increased the nutrient content of sludge (157.75–177.88 g·kg−1). The four combined extractants increased the proportion of soluble components of HMs in sludge (14–36 %). Therefore, the combined leaching agent will provide a valuable reference for the harmless treatment of HMs in sludge and the resource utilization of peel waste.

The establishment of ecological risk thresholds for arsenic (As) plays a pivotal role in developing soil conservation strategies. However, despite many studies regarding the toxicological profile of As, such thresholds varying by diverse soil properties have rarely been established. This study aims to address this gap by compiling and critically examining an extensive dataset of As toxicity data sourced from existing literature. Furthermore, to augment the existing information, experimental studies on As toxicity focusing on barley-root elongation were carried out across various soil types. The As concentrations varied from 12.01 to 437.25 mg/kg for the effective concentrations that inhibited 10% of barley-root growth (EC10). The present study applied a machine-learning approach to investigate the complex associations between the toxicity thresholds of As and diverse soil properties. The results revealed that Mn-/Fe-ox and clay content emerged as the most influential factors in predicting the EC10 contribution. Additionally, by using a species sensitivity distribution model and toxicity data from 21 different species, the hazardous concentration for x% of species (HCx) was calculated for four representative soil scenarios. The HC5 values for acidic, neutral, alkaline, and alkaline calcareous soils were 80, 47, 40, and 28 mg/kg, respectively. This study establishes an evidence-based methodology for deriving soil-specific guidance concerning As toxicity thresholds.

Abstract Background Gut microbiota and their metabolites play a regulatory role in skeletal muscle growth and development, which be known as gut-muscle axis. 3-phenylpropionic acid (3-PPA), a metabolite produced by colonic microorganisms from phenylalanine in the gut, presents in large quantities in the blood circulation. But few study revealed its function in skeletal muscle development. Results Here, we demonstrated the beneficial effects of 3-PPA on muscle mass increase and myotubes hypertrophy both in vivo and vitro. Further, we discovered the 3-PPA effectively inhibited protein degradation and promoted protein acetylation in C2C12 and chick embryo primary skeletal muscle myotubes. Mechanistically, we supported that 3-PPA reduced NAD+ synthesis and subsequently suppressed tricarboxylic acid cycle and the mRNA expression of SIRT1/3, thus promoting the acetylation of total protein and Foxo3. Moreover, 3-PPA may inhibit Foxo3 activity by directly binding. Conclusions This study firstly revealed the effect of 3-PPA on skeletal muscle growth and development, and newly discovered the interaction between 3-PPA and Foxo3/NAD+ which mechanically promote myotubes hypertrophy. These results expand new understanding for the regulation of gut microbiota metabolites on skeletal muscle growth and development.

Abstract Flash Joule heating (FJH) is an emerging and profitable technology for converting inexhaustible biomass into flash graphene (FG). However, it is challenging to produce biomass FG continuously due to the lack of an integrated device. Furthermore, the high-carbon footprint induced by both excessive energy allocation for massive pyrolytic volatiles release and carbon black utilization in alternating current-FJH (AC-FJH) reaction exacerbates this challenge. Here, we create an integrated automatic system with energy requirement-oriented allocation to achieve continuous biomass FG production with a much lower carbon footprint. The programmable logic controller flexibly coordinated the FJH modular components to realize the turnover of biomass FG production. Furthermore, we propose pyrolysis-FJH nexus to achieve biomass FG production. Initially, we utilize pyrolysis to release biomass pyrolytic volatiles, and subsequently carry out the FJH reaction to focus on optimizing the FG structure. Importantly, biochar with appropriate resistance is self-sufficient to initiate the FJH reaction. Accordingly, the medium-temperature biochar-based FG production without carbon black utilization exhibited low carbon emission (1.9 g CO2-eq g−1 graphene), equivalent to a reduction of up to ~86.1% compared to biomass-based FG production. Undoubtedly, this integrated automatic system assisted by pyrolysis-FJH nexus can facilitate biomass FG into a broad spectrum of applications.

Numerous Payments for Ecosystem Services (PES) programs have been implemented simultaneously around the world but their outcomes in the literature are not consistent and their interactive effects remain understudied. The Natural Forest Conservation Program (NFCP) and Grain to Green Program (GTGP) are two largest PES programs in the world, and many studies have evaluated their effects on household income. However, the identified effects often varied across different studies and the factors explaining this variation are poorly understood. This study used linear regression and geographic detector analysis, based on questionnaire survey data from 14 giant panda natural reserves (NRs) in southwestern China, to evaluate the effects of the NFCP and GTGP on household income and the factors which moderate these effects. The results revealed that the effects of two PES programs on household income were spatially heterogeneous and enhanced by each other and livelihood activities, suggesting a synergistic interaction between policies and livelihood activities, particularly tourism. This study also found that livelihoods activities (e.g., labor migration and tourism), household capital (i.e., house area and farmland area) and demographic factors (i.e., number of labor and non-labor members), exhibit spatial heterogeneity in their effects on household income across NRs. These findings underscore the importance of considering local socioeconomic conditions and the interaction between policy and socio-economic conditions in PES program design to achieve desired outcomes, providing insights for policymakers and practitioners worldwide.

Context and backgroundMicroplastics (MPs) and heavy metals (HMs) coexist in the farmland of China.MotivationIt still remains unclear the extent of their exposure and distribution in sweet potato fields.HypothesisPolyethylene (PE) or polyamide (PA) is the main MP pollutant in contaminated sweet potato sites, and the MP abundance in low-latitude and eastern areas is highest. Methods: In this study, saturated NaCl solution, a stereo microscope, a Fourier transform infrared spectrometer, and an electrothermal digester are used for the extraction, observation, identification of MPs, and analysis of Cd elements in soil, respectively.MethodsIn this study, saturated NaCl solution, a stereo microscope, a Fourier transform infrared spectrometer, and an electrothermal digester are used for the extraction, observation, identification of MPs, and analysis of Cd elements in soil, respectively.ResultsHere, we found an average MP level of 112,400 items/kg in 30 sweet potato field sites based on the items in 5 g soil and the magnification (200x), and the maximum abundance was 197,153 items/kg in Laiyang city, Shandong province, by field survey. The distribution characteristics of MPs are middle-latitude areas < low-latitude areas, and eastern areas > central areas. Most MPs are of the fragment and film shape, which account for 47.96 and 40.22%, respectively. In order to detect MP polymers in three cities named “Liancheng,” “Huanggang,” and “Laiyang” with different degrees of development, a laser infrared imaging system was used as a novel instrument to explore the MPs larger than 10 μm.ConclusionThe results showed that PA is the main MP pollutant in contaminated sweet potato sites, and soil texture, planting time, and urbanization processes may be the main factors affecting MP distribution. The average cadmium (Cd) concentration in 215 field sites is 0.15 mg/kg, and the local Cd pollution is existing, but the overall pollution is low. In addition, Cd concentration was negatively correlated with MP abundance. This study reveals the status of MP and also Cd pollution in sweet potato fields, which provides a theoretical basis for the safe production and utilization of sweet potato fields.

ObjectiveIn order to improve the accuracy and efficiency of ship trajectory anomaly detection, and solve the problems of traditional anomaly detection methods such as limited feature characterization ability, insufficient compensation accuracy, gradient disappearance and overfitting, an unsupervised ship trajectory anomaly detection method based on the Transformer_LSTM codec module is proposed.MethodBased on the encoder decoder architecture, the Transformer_LSTM module replaces the traditional neural network to achieve track feature extraction and track reconstruction. By embedding the transformer into the recursive mechanism of LSTM, combined with the cyclic unit and attention mechanism, self-attention and cross-attention can be used to calculate the state vector of the cyclic unit and effectively construct the long sequence model. By minimizing the difference between the reconstructed output and original input, the model learns the characteristics and motion mode of the general trajectory, and trajectories with a reconstruction error greater than the abnormal threshold are judged as abnormal trajectories. ResultsAIS data collected in January 2021 is adopted. The results show that the accuracy, precesion and recall rate of the model are significantly improved compared with those of LOF, DBSCAN, VAE, LSTM, etc. The F1 score is improved by 8.11% compared with that of the VAE_LSTM model.ConclusionThe anomaly detection performance of the proposed method is significantly superior to the traditional algorithm in various indexes, and the model can be effectively and reliably applied to the trajectory anomaly detection of ships at sea.

Abstract Background Allergic asthma is an important respiratory system problem characterized by airway inflammation, breathlessness, and bronchoconstriction. Allergic asthma and its outcomes are triggered by type 2 allergic immune responses. Tectorigenin is a methoxy‐isoflavone with anti‐inflammatory effects. In this study, we investigated the effects of tectorigenin on the pathophysiology of allergic asthma in an animal model. Methods Asthmatic mice were treated with tectorigenin. Then airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR), eosinophil percentage, levels of interleukin (IL)‐33, IL‐25, IL‐13, IL‐5, IL‐4, total and ovalbumin (OVA)‐specific immunoglobulin (Ig)E, and lung histopathology were evaluated. Result Tectorigenin significantly (P 〈 0.05) reduced eosinophil infiltration (41 ± 7%) in the broncho‐alveolar lavage fluid (BALF), serum IL‐5 level (41 ± 5, pg/mL), and bronchial and vascular inflammation (scores of 1.3 ± 0.2 and 1.1 ± 0.3, respectively) but had no significant effects on AHR, serum levels of IL‐33, −25, −13, and −4 (403 ± 24, 56 ± 7, 154 ± 11, and 89 ± 6 pg/mL, respectively), total and OVA‐specific IgE (2684 ± 265 and 264 ± 19 ng/mL, respectively), goblet cell hyperplasia, and mucus production. Conclusion Tectorigenin could control inflammation and the secretion of inflammatory mediators of asthma, so it can be regarded as a potential antiasthma treatment with the ability to control eosinophilia‐related problems.

Abstract Numerous studies have unequivocally demonstrated that biochar and, to a lesser degree, earthworms can independently improve soil fertility and crop productivity, although information about their co-application effects on soil characteristics is limited. In this review, (1) earthworm biomarkers and underlying influencing factors, as well as the changes in the amended soil quality in response to co-application of earthworms and biochar are presented, (2) the functional interactions between earthworms and biochar in soil are summarized; (3) the principles governing the synergetic effects of biochar and earthworms on soil quality enhancement are probed; and (4) alternative strategies to optimize the efficacy of earthworm and biochar amendments are provided. It is noteworthy that while low doses of biochar can have a positive effect on various earthworm biomarkers, including growth and reproduction, restoration of the intestinal environment, and the mitigation of cellular organelle toxicity and genetic damage, high biochar dosages can yield adverse effects. Conversely, earthworms play a crucial role in distributing biochar particles deeper into the soil matrix, bolstering carbon sequestration potential, and enhancing the persistence and efficiency of biochar utilization. Moreover, earthworms stimulate the production of soil extracellular enzymes by microorganisms, which are pivotal to the processing, stabilization, and decomposition of soil organic matter, as well as nutrient cycling in terrestrial ecosystems. Additionally, they enhance the binding affinities of these enzymes to biochar. Significantly, changes in earthworm biomarkers in response to biochar integration are predominately governed by biochar properties and dosage, contact time, and soil type. Graphical Abstract

With the development of the Internet of Things (IoT) and edge computing, more and more devices, such as sensor nodes and intelligent automated guided vehicles (AGVs), can serve as edge devices to provide Location-Based Services (LBS) through the IoT. As the number of applications increases, there is an abundance of sensitive information in the communication process, pushing the focus of privacy protection towards the communication process and edge devices. The challenge lies in the fact that most traditional location privacy protection algorithms are not suited for the IoT with edge computing, as they primarily focus on the security of remote servers. To enhance the capability of location privacy protection, this paper proposes a novel K-anonymity algorithm based on clustering. This novel algorithm incorporates a scheme that flexibly combines real and virtual locations based on the requirements of applications. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm significantly improves location privacy protection for the IoT with edge computing. When compared to traditional K-anonymity algorithms, the proposed algorithm further enhances the security of location privacy by expanding the potential region in which the real node may be located, thereby limiting the effectiveness of “narrow-region” attacks.

Abstract Background The gastrointestinal tract contains a massive microbiota, and targeting the gut could be a potential intervention for sepsis. However, the interaction between sepsis and the intestinal microbiota is defined as an “incompletely understood bidirectional relationship”. Methods This retrospective observational cohort study investigated the fecal microbiota of sepsis patients admitted to the Department of Critical Care Medicine of the Central Hospital of Wuhan, China, from May 2019 to January 2020. 14 septic patients were divided into the non-severe group and the severe group according to the Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation II (APACHE II) score. Herein, fecal samples were serially collected on admission, the third, fourth, and fifth days, and ICU discharge. The fecal microbiota was analyzed by 16S rRNA gene sequencing and its correlation with clinical parameters was evaluated. Results Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes, and Proteobacteria were dominant phyla at ICU admission, and fecal biodiversity was not significantly different between the non-severe group (APACHE II 15). However, the diversity of the gut microbiota was significantly lower at ICU discharge than that at ICU admission with the extension of treatment time. Further significant difference flora analysis (LEfSe) showed that the genera Veillonella and Ruminococcus were the most discriminant biomarkers at ICU admission in non-severe and severe patients, respectively, while Enterococcus was the most discriminant biomarker at ICU discharge in all septic patients. Of note, liver function tests, including ALT, AST, TBIL, and DBIL correlated with the prevalence of various bacterial genera. Conclusions The diversity of the gut microbiota in patients with sepsis decreases dramatically during ICU stay, and there are distinct dynamic changes in gut microbiota among patients with different severity in sepsis.

Ship propellers suffered from serious coupling damage of cavitation-erosion (CE) and corrosion when operated with high-speed in the marine environment. To improve the CE-corrosion resistance of the Ni–Al bronze (NAB) propeller alloy, a novel Cu-based medium-entropy alloy coating (Cu55Al20Ni12Ti8Si5, at.%) was prepared by high-velocity oxygen-fuel spraying technology in this study. The characteristics and CE behavior of coating and NAB were comparatively investigated, then the CE damage mechanism was discussed by analyzing CE damage morphologies. The influence of CE on corrosion behavior and the coupling effect between CE and corrosion were further elucidated by electrochemical corrosion experiments. The results indicated that the as-sprayed coating mainly comprised of BCC solid solution phase and NiTi-rich precipitates, which possessed higher hardness (6.73 ± 1.23 GPa) and superior resilience (27.0%) than the NAB. The cumulative mass loss rate for the coating after 18 h CE in distilled water and 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution was only 38.7% and 80.6% that for the NAB, revealing the better anti-CE performance of the coating. The preferential CE of the BCC matrix around the NiTi-rich precipitates, fatigue fracture and lamellar spalling were summarized as the main CE damage mechanism for the coating in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution. CE had a significant influence on corrosion behavior of coating and NAB, which resulted in corrosion performance degradation of both two materials. The CE-corrosion coupling effect led to the remarkable mass loss, and mechanical effect rather than corrosion effect was ascribed to be the dominated factor for the damage of coating and NAB.

Abstract Biocatalysis is increasingly replacing traditional methods of manufacturing fine chemicals due to its green, mild, and highly selective nature, but biocatalysts, such as enzymes, are generally costly, fragile, and difficult to recycle. Immobilization provides protection for the enzyme and enables its convenient reuse, which makes immobilized enzymes promising heterogeneous biocatalysts; however, their industrial applications are limited by the low specific activity and poor stability. Herein, we report a feasible strategy utilizing the synergistic bridging of triazoles and metal ions to induce the formation of porous enzyme-assembled hydrogels with increased activity. The catalytic efficiency of the prepared enzyme-assembled hydrogels toward acetophenone reduction is 6.3 times higher than that of the free enzyme, and the reusability is confirmed by the high residual catalytic activity after 12 cycles of use. A near-atomic resolution (2.1 Å) structure of the hydrogel enzyme is successfully analyzed via cryogenic electron microscopy, which indicates a structure–property relationship for the enhanced performance. In addition, the possible mechanism of gel formation is elucidated, revealing the indispensability of triazoles and metal ions, which guides the use of two other enzymes to prepare enzyme-assembled hydrogels capable of good reusability. The described strategy can pave the way for the development of practical catalytic biomaterials and immobilized biocatalysts.

Ulva prolifera (U. prolifera) green tide outbreaks have occurred in the Yellow Sea of China for many years, causing serious losses to marine ecology and the marine economy. The monitoring and tracking of U. prolifera green tide is a crucial aspect of marine ecological disaster prevention and control management. This paper aims to investigate the spatiotemporal distribution changes in U. prolifera green tide in the Yellow Sea throughout its life cycle. A survey of the Yellow Sea from 2008 to 2023 was conducted using multi-source remote sensing images. Long-term monitoring and analysis of U. prolifera revealed the evolution process of the green tide, including the early development, outbreak, decline, and extinction stages, considering time, space, and frequency of occurrence. Additionally, this study examined peak coverage change patterns over the past 16 years and analyzed the influence of environmental factors such as sea surface temperature and sea surface wind field on the development of U. prolifera. The research results serve as a valuable reference for the monitoring, early warning, and scientific prevention and control of U. prolifera green tide in the Yellow Sea, as well as other similar marine disaster areas.

As the quality of life and the spiritual and cultural well-being of the inhabitants progress, the current rural infrastructure has challenges in adequately addressing the physical and psychological requirements of individuals. This work presents a method for evaluating rural habitats by utilizing electroencephalography (EEG) signals and virtual reality (VR) technology to address the existing gap in physiological data evaluation in rural areas. We choose as experimental images the current situation (C1–C5) scenes of five rural main street nodes as well as the comparative transformation scenes (T1–T5). It then assesses the subjects’ subjective cognition and level of relaxation–arousal responses using the α/β value in the EEG data and the three subjective scale indexes of “Interest”, “Comfort”, and “Vitality”. The study’s findings demonstrated the following: 1. All three scores increased in the transformation scenarios, and subjects’ subjective assessments varied significantly across all five sets of scenes. 2. In all α/β values where significant differences existed, every electrode demonstrated a relaxation response in the transformation scenes (T1–T5) compared to the current scenes (C1–C5), whereas the T8 electrode demonstrated the only arousal response. 3. The Pz electrode in the parietal lobe area was found to be the most sensitive to the visual response to the green landscape and the form of the building façade along the street, and the T8 electrode in the right temporal lobe area was the most sensitive to the response to the overall perception of the surrounding environment, according to a comparison of the longitudinal α/β value. More options for rural streetscape design as well as fresh insights and methodologies for assessing the rural human environment in the future are anticipated from this study.

IntroductionThe Songnen Plain is one of the three major saline-alkali areas in China, covering a vast area, where drought and overgrazing have exacerbated the salinization trend, and will have great potential for development if utilized rationally. Phosphorus, as one of important soil nutrients, plays a crucial role in plant growth. How to minimize its loss and migration has become a current research hotspot. The objective of the present study was to elucidate the adsorption properties of phosphorus in soils affected by salinization and to establish the correlation between the potential for phosphorus release and soil properties.MethodsA batch treatment test was conducted in this study using three soils with the various salinization degrees to examine the impact of environmental factors on the adsorption properties and potential release of phosphorus.Results and discussionIt was found that the maximum phosphorus adsorption by the three salinization soils in 0-360 minutes accounted for 86.8%-90.5% of the total adsorption capacity; the equilibrium adsorption capacity was: HS> MS> LS. In cases where the phosphorus level in the surrounding liquid is low, the three levels of salinized soils exhibited varying levels of phosphorus discharge, with the adsorbent acting as the origin of contaminants. The Pseudo-second-order model kinetics and Langmuir equation can well describe the adsorption process, and the adsorption process is spontaneous heat absorption with entropy increase. Increasing the pH led to an increase in the adsorption of phosphorus from the three salinized soils. Additionally, the adsorption was enhanced by introducing varying concentrations of Na+, Ca2+, and Al3+ to the background solution. The phosphorus eutrophication release risk (ERI) demonstrated a gradual decline as temperature increased. Correlation analysis revealed a noteworthy positive correlation between TN, TP, and ERI, as well as a significant negative correlation between CEC, K+, and ERI. Furthermore, there was a highly significant negative correlation between coarse silt and fine silt. Considering local climatic and environmental factors is crucial for controlling the adsorption capacity of phosphorus in various salinized soils, as it can unveil the mechanism of phosphorus adsorption and impact its migration and release risk.

Anti-theft work is important to the normal operation and safety guarantee of power system. But currently, many anti-theft diagnostic methods are no longer able to meet the demand for accurate detection. Therefore, the study introduced deep belief networks and improved them to address their shortcomings, designing a volume sparse deep belief network based on neural architecture search. On this basis, the construction of an anti-theft diagnosis model was studied and implemented. In the results, the hidden layers number obtained by the neural architecture search was all 3, and the fluctuation range of the number of neurons searched was [80100]. The true occurrence rate of the receiver operation characteristic curve after model processing has been effectively improved, and it is infinitely close to 1. At the same time, the region value of this curve is as high as 0.98, which is 0.52 higher than the untreated region value. In addition, the feature recognition accuracy of this model is stable at around 95%, and the highest accuracy reaches 98.26%. And the recognition loss of this model is around 0.2, with a minimum of only 0.11. This indicates that the anti-theft diagnosis model has excellent performance and can be well applied in practical anti-theft diagnosis. This provides a reliable safety guarantee for the operation of the power system.

The combination of electrospun nanofibers and nanoparticles is opening up potential in the field of bifunctional materials. Herein, polystyrene (PS, Mw ≈ 260, 000), polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP, Mw ≈1, 300, 000), and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA, Mw ≈ 350, 000) bifunctional fibers containing Tb(acac) _3 phen complexes (acac: acetylacetone, phen: 1,10-phenanthroline) and Fe _3 O _4 nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized by single-fluid electrospinning method. The structure of bifunctional microfibers was characterized by x-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), energy spectrum (EDAX) and infrared spectrum (IR). The average diameters of PS, PVP and PMMA bifunctional fibers are 1.65, 0.313 and 0.571 μm, respectively. The TEM images indicated that Fe _3 O _4 NPs were successfully incorporated into bifunctional fibers. No absorption peaks of terbium complexes and Fe _3 O _4 NPs can be seen in the IR spectra of bifunctional fibers. The luminescent and magnetic properties of bifunctional fibers were also investigated. Due to the change of ligands environment, the main excitation peaks blue shifted about 5–8 nm in the bifunctional fibers. Bifunctional fibers exhibited characteristic emission of Tb ^3+ ions. The polymers have no effect on the fluorescence lifetimes of terbium complexes. All bifunctional fibers were soft ferromagnetic. In addition, mechanical performances of these nanofibers were also studied. The maximum stress, strain corresponding to the maximum stress and elastic modulus of sample PVP-Fe-Tb is the largest, which indicates that the tensile performance of sample PVP-Fe-Tb is the best.

The Payments for Ecosystem Services (PES) program is an innovative approach that provides economic incentives directly to natural resource exploiters in order to shape their behavior. Although the implementation of PES programs and the context in which these programs are implemented are often different across space, the spatial heterogeneities in the impacts of PES programs are often neglected in studies. In this study, we demonstrate the spatial and temporal dynamics of the Normalized Differential Vegetation Index (NDVI) in the grassland where China’s Grassland Ecological Compensation Program (GECP) has been implemented, and we evaluate the impacts of the GECP on the NDVI. We found that most of the grassland in the GECP area showed small changes in NDVI between 2000 and 2010. On average, the GECP only had a marginal positive effect on the NDVI of grassland. Although the magnitude of impacts of the GECP was relatively small in most places where the program is implemented, we detected substantial heterogeneities in the impacts of the GECP on the NDVI. The impact of the GECP on the NDVI differed substantially, particularly between Inner Mongolia, Sichuan, and other provinces. Our findings suggest that there can be substantial heterogeneities in the impacts of PES programs across space, which can be leveraged to promote the efficacy of the GECP and many other PES programs around the world.

Urban landscape parks play a crucial role in providing recreational opportunities for citizens. Different types of landscapes offer varying levels of comfort experiences. However, the assessment of landscape comfort primarily relies on subjective evaluations and basic physiological measurements, which lack sufficient quantification of relevant data. This study employed electroencephalography (EEG) technology and subjective questionnaire evaluation methods. Participants observed two sets of landscape demonstration videos using virtual reality (VR) devices, and EEG alpha values and subjective evaluation scores were collected to assess the comfort levels of free-form landscape and regular-form landscape. Additionally, this study explored the correlation between landscape characteristics and physiological comfort. The analysis of the results showed that: 1. The average amplitude of EEG alpha waves recorded from 11 electrodes in the left temporal lobe and right parietal lobe of the participants was higher after they watched the free-form landscape demonstration. The increased alpha values suggest that free-form landscapes are more likely to induce physiological comfort in these specific brain regions. In contrast, regular-form landscape was found to induce higher alpha values at seven specific electrodes located in the occipital cortex, right temporal lobe, and central regions of the participants. In general, free-form landscape provided physiological comfort to a greater number of brain regions. 2. The two groups of landscapes exhibit distinct subjective cognitive differences in terms of their landscape characteristics. These differences, ranked in order of magnitude, include rhythmicity, sense of order, sense of security, and sense of dependence. 3. This study examined the α-waves of specific brain regions, including the right and left temporal lobe and occipital lobe, as well as subjective scoring. It discovered that the rhythmicity, degree of variation, degree of color, and sense of nature of a landscape impact the α-wave value of electrodes in different brain regions. Moreover, there exists a certain linear relationship between the four landscape features and the α-wave values in different regions of the brain. The results of this study provide some reference for the creation of a comfortable landscape design.

Highlights Long-term (9-years) biochar amendment field and greenhouse pot experiments were conducted. DGT/DIFS/SPRRI were used to in-situ assess P availability, resupply, and release risk to the environment. Long-term biochar addition significantly decreased rice rhizosphere available P and its release risk to the environment. Fe/Al-P and unavailable P dominated the mobility and resupply of P.

Adoptive transfer of natural killer (NK) cells represents a viable treatment method for patients with advanced malignancies. Our team previously developed a simple, safe, and cost-effective method for obtaining high yields of pure and functional NK cells from cord blood (CB) without the need for cell sorting, feeder cells, or multiple cytokines. We present the case of a 52-year-old female patient diagnosed with poorly differentiated stage IVB (T3N2M1) endometrial cancer, who exhibited leukemoid reaction and pretreatment thrombocytosis as paraneoplastic syndromes. The patient received two courses of CB-derived NK (CB-NK) cell immunotherapy between March and September 2022, due to her extremely low NK cell activity. Two available CB units matched at 8/10 HLA with KIR-mismatch were chosen, and we were able to produce NK cells with high yield (>1.0×1010 NK cells), purity (>90%), and function (>80%) from CB without cell sorting, feeder cells, or multiple cytokines. These cells were then adoptively transferred to the patient. No adverse effects or graft-versus-host disease were observed after infusion of CB-NK cells. Our clinical experience supports the efficacy of CB-NK cell treatment in increasing NK cell activity, depleting tumor activity, improving quality of life, and reducing the size of abdominal and pelvic masses with the disappearance of multiple lymph node metastases through the regulation of systemic antitumor immunity. Remarkably, the white blood cell and platelet counts decreased to normal levels after CB-NK cell immunotherapy. This clinical work suggests that CB-NK cell immunotherapy holds promise as a therapeutic approach for endometrial cancer.

Hearing loss is the most common congenital sensory impairment. Mutations or deficiencies of the GJB2 gene are the most common genetic cause of congenital non-syndromic deafness. Pathological changes such as decreased potential in the cochlea, active cochlear amplification disorders, cochlear developmental disorders and macrophage activation have been observed in various GJB2 transgenic mouse models. In the past, researchers generally believed that the pathological mechanisms underlying GJB2-related hearing loss comprised a K+ circulation defect and abnormal ATP-Ca2+ signals. However, recent studies have shown that K+ circulation is rarely associated with the pathological process of GJB2-related hearing loss, while cochlear developmental disorders and oxidative stress play an important, even critical, role in the occurrence of GJB2-related hearing loss. Nevertheless, these research has not been systematically summarized. In this review, we summarize the pathological mechanisms of GJB2-related hearing loss, including aspects of K+ circulation, developmental disorders of the organ of Corti, nutrition delivery, oxidative stress and ATP-Ca2+ signals. Clarifying the pathological mechanism of GJB2-related hearing loss can help develop new prevention and treatment strategies.

IntroductionComposting is a highly effective method for managing the growing quantity of agricultural waste, promoting nutrient recycling, and advancing sustainable agriculture. However, the significant amounts of volatile inorganic compounds (VICs) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) generated during the composting process cannot be ignored due to their serious ecological environmental hazards and detrimental impact on human health. The types and pathways of VICs and VOCs produced during the composting process remain not well understood.MethodsIn this study, we investigated the VOCs produced during chicken manure and straw composting using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC/MS). We performed qualitative and quantitative analyses of VOCs in composting emissions gases and their correlation with odor.ResultsOur results showed that 44 VOCs were detected during composting, including 4 oxidation-containing compounds, 2 sulfur-containing organics, 5 alkanes, 19 halogenated compounds, and 14 aromatic compounds. Aromatic compounds were found to be the main component of VOCs, accounting for 59.14% of the total content. The highest VOC content was found in the pre-composting period, and the highest emitting VOC was p-Isopropyl Toluene, which reached 7870.50 μg/m3. Sediment is an important part of the lake and reservoir ecosystem, and also an important "source" and "sink" of pollutants. In this paper, sediment A (Xinlicheng Reservoir Sediments), sediment B (eutrophic lake reservoir sediments) and soil C (topsoil at the inflow of Yitong River near Xinlicheng Reservoir) are used as research objects, and batch experiments are used to study the adsorption capacity and release risk of phosphorus (P). The results showed that the maximum adsorption capacity of the adsorbent for phosphorus accounted for 91.51-99.63% of the total adsorption capacity within 0-120 min; when the background liquid phosphorus concentration is lower, soil and sediment all have different degrees of phosphorus release. By this time soil and sediment is the "source" of pollutants; when the phosphorus concentration is 10 mg/L, the maximum adsorption capacity is 116.19-428.91 mg/kg, and the adsorption capacity of sediment A is 2.41 times and that of soil C and sediment B, respectively. 3.69 times, indicating that if phosphorus enters the water body from the soil due to surface runoff and other factors, the sediment has a strong adsorption capacity for phosphorus, that is, soil and sediment is an effective "sink" of phosphorus; the Henry equation is used to fit the P adsorption isotherm effect. Preferably, and r is greater than 0.968. The amount of phosphorus absorbed by sediment A and sediment B is affected by pH higher than that of soil C. When the value of pH is 7, the adsorption amount is the largest; the P induced lake eutrophication risk index (ERI) of sediment A, sediment B and soil C is sediment B > soil C > sediment A. As the temperature of sediment and soil rises, the ERI index of phosphorus gradually decreases.

This brief proposes a 1–6 GHz broadband double-balanced mixer. On the basis of the standard Marchand balun mixer, two techniques to enhance the performance of the mixer are proposed. Firstly, by loading capacitors, the amplitude and phase imbalance of the balun at high frequencies are improved, thereby expanding the relative bandwidth of the mixer by 0.1. Secondly, by cascading a first-order LC filter at the intermediate-frequency (IF) port, the leakage of radio frequency (RF) and local oscillator (LO) signals at the IF port is reduced by approximately 8 dB and 7 dB, respectively. This brief analyzes the various parameters that affect balun indicators and designs a broadband balun with a double-layer spiral line structure. As a result of these technologies, a 1–6 GHz double-balanced mixer is realized. The chip area is 1.13 mm × 0.95 mm, and the isolation between the IF port and the RF port is 34 dB and yields 13.5 dBm input power at 1 dB compression point (IP1 dB). The chip is fabricated via the GaAs pHEMT process.

There are increasing concerns over the threat of nanoplastics to environmental and human health. However, multidisciplinary barriers persist between the communities assessing the risks to environmental and human health. As a result, the hazards and risks of nanoplastics remain uncertain. Here, we identify key knowledge gaps by evaluating the exposure of nanoplastics in the environment, assessing their bio-nano interactions, and examining their potential risks to humans and the environment. We suggest considering nanoplastics a complex and dynamic mixture of polymers, additives, and contaminants, with interconnected risks to environmental and human health. We call for comprehensive integration of One Health approach to produce robust multidisciplinary evidence to nanoplastics threats at the planetary level. Although there are many challenges, this holistic approach incorporates the relevance of environmental exposure and multi-sectoral responses, which provide the opportunity to identify the risk mitigation strategies of nanoplastics to build resilient health systems.

IntroductionThis study aimed to explore the possible pathogenesis of a rare case of co-existing Cushing’s syndrome (CS) and primary aldosteronism (PA) caused by bilateral adrenocortical adenomas secreting aldosterone and cortisol, respectively.MethodsA 41-year-old Chinese woman with severe hypertension and hypokalemia for 5 and 2 years, respectively, was referred to our hospital. She had a Cushingoid appearance. Preoperative endocrinological examinations revealed autonomous cortisol and aldosterone secretion. Computed tomography revealed bilateral adrenal adenomas. Subsequently, adrenal vein sampling and sequential left and right partial adrenalectomy indicated the presence of a left aldosterone-producing tumor and a right cortisol-producing tumor. Pathological examination included immunohistochemical analysis of the resected specimens. Secretions of aldosterone and cortisol were observed both in vivo and in vitro. Further, whole-exome sequencing was performed for DNA that was extracted from peripheral blood leukocytes and bilateral adrenal adenomas in order to determine whether the patient had relevant variants associated with PA and CS.ResultsImmunohistochemical staining revealed that the left adenoma primarily comprised clear cells expressing CYP11B2, whereas the right adenoma comprised both eosinophilic compact and clear cells expressing CYP11B1. The mRNA levels of steroidogenic enzymes (including CYP11B1 and CYP17A1) were high in the right adenoma, whereas CYP11B2 was highly expressed in the left adenoma. A novel somatic heterozygous missense variant—KCNJ5 c.503T > G (p.L168R)—was detected in the left adrenal adenoma, but no other causative variants associated with PA and CS were detected in the peripheral blood or right adrenocortical adenoma. In the primary cell culture of the resected hyperplastic adrenal adenomas, verapamil and nifedipine, which are two calcium channel blockers, markedly inhibited the secretion of both aldosterone and cortisol.ConclusionWe present an extremely rare case of bilateral adrenocortical adenomas with distinct secretion of aldosterone and cortisol. The heterogeneity of the tumor cell compositions of aldosterone- and cortisol-producing adenoma (A/CPA) and somatic mutation of KCNJ5 may have led to different hormone secretions in the bilateral adrenal adenomas.

This paper aims to present a generalized and extended notation of convexity by unifying reciprocally strong convexity with h,s−convexity. We introduce the concept of reciprocally strongly h,s−convex functions and establish some of their fundamental properties. In addition, we establish various inequalities, including Jensen, Hermite–Hadamard, and Fejér-type inequalities, for this generalized framework. Our findings are an extension of numerous existing results and provide a basis for developing novel methods for generalization in convexity.

A DNA barcode is a short piece of standard DNA sequence used for species determination and discrimination. Representation of DNA barcodes is essential for DNA barcodes' applications in the transportation and recognition of biological materials. Previously, we have compared different strategies for representing the DNA barcodes. In the present study, we have developed a compression algorithm based on binary coding or Huffman coding scheme, followed by converting the binary digits into Base64 digits. The combination of this compression algorithm and the QR representation leads to the dynamic DNA QR coding algorithm (DDQR). We tested the DDQR algorithm on simulated data and real DNA barcode sequences from the commonly used plant and animal DNA barcode markers: rbcL, matK, trnH-psbA, ITS2, and COI. We compared the compression efficiency of DDQR and another state-of-the-art DNA compression algorithm GeCo3 for sequences with various base compositions and lengths. We found that DDQR had a higher compression rate than GeCo3 for DNA sequences shorter than 800 bp, which is the typical size range for DNA barcodes. We also upgraded a web server (http://www.1kmpg.cn/ddqr) that provides three functions: retrieval of DNA barcode sequences, encoding DNA barcode sequences to DDQR codes, and decoding DDQR codes to DNA barcode sequences. The DDQR algorithm and the webserver will be invaluable to applying DNA barcode technology in the food and traditional medicine industries.

Abstract Due to the bus characteristics of large quality, high center of gravity and narrow wheelbase, the research of its yaw stability control (YSC) system has become the focus in the field of vehicle system dynamics. However, the tire nonlinear mechanical properties and the effectiveness of the YSC control system are not considered carefully in the current research. In this paper, a novel adaptive nonsingular fast terminal sliding mode (ANFTSM) control scheme for YSC is proposed to improve the bus curve driving stability and safety on slippery roads. Firstly, the STI (Systems Technologies Inc.) tire model, which can effectively reflect the nonlinear coupling relationship between the tire longitudinal force and lateral force, is established based on experimental data and firstly adopted in the bus YSC system design. On this basis, a more accurate bus lateral dynamics model is built and a novel YSC strategy based on ANFTSM, which has the merits of fast transient response, finite time convergence and high robustness against uncertainties and external disturbances, is designed. Thirdly, to solve the optimal allocation problem of the tire forces, whose objective is to achieve the desired direct yaw moment through the effective distribution of the brake force of each tire, the robust least-squares allocation method is adopted. To verify the feasibility, effectiveness and practicality of the proposed bus YSC approach, the TruckSim-Simulink co-simulation results are finally provided. The co-simulation results show that the lateral stability of bus under special driving conditions has been significantly improved. This research proposes a more effective design method for bus YSC system based on a more accurate tire model.

Introduction: Although there have been significant advances in research and treatments over the past decades, cancer remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality, mostly due to resistance to standard therapies. Pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF), a newly emerged therapeutic strategy, has been highly regarded as less invasive and almost safe to patients, is now a clinically accepted form to treat diseases including cancer. Breast and lung cancer are the most prevalent forms of human cancers, yet reported investigations on exploring regimes including PEMF are limited. Methods: Intended to examine the anti-tumor effects of a clinically accepted osteogenic PEMF and the possibility of including PEMF in breast and lung cancer treatments, we studied the effects of 2 PEMF signals (PMF1 and PMF2) on breast and lung cancer cell growth and proliferation, as well as the possible underline mechanisms in vitro and in vivo. Results: We found that both signals caused modest but significant growth inhibition (∼5%) in MCF-7 and A549 cancer cells. Interestingly, mice xenograft tumors with A549 cells treated by PEMF were smaller in sizes than controls. However, for mice with MCF-7 tumor implants, treatment with PMF1 resulted in a slight increase (2.8%) in mean tumor size, while PMF2 treated tumors showed a 9% reduction in average size. Furthermore, PEMF increased caspase 3/7 expression levels and percentage of annexin stained cells, indicating the induction of apoptosis. It also increased G0 by 8.5%, caused changes in the expression of genes associated with cell growth suppression, DNA damage, cell cycle arrest, and apoptosis. When cancer cells or xenograft tumors treated with combined PEMF and chemotherapy drugs, PEMF showed growth inhibition effect independent of cisplatin in A549 cells, but with added effect by pemetrexed for the inhibition of MCF-7 growth. Conclusion: Together, our data suggested that clinically used osteogenic PEMF signals moderately suppressed cancer cell growth and proliferation both in vitro and in vivo.

Obesity is resulted from energy surplus and is characterized by abnormal adipose tissue accumulation and/or distribution. Adipokines secreted by different regional adipose tissue can induce changes in key proteins of the insulin signaling pathway in hepatocytes and result in impaired hepatic glucose metabolism. This study aimed to investigate whether exenatide affects key proteins of IRS2/PI3K/Akt2 signaling pathway in hepatocytes altered by the different regional fat depots. Six non-obese patients without endocrine diseases were selected as the research subjects. Their subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) and visceral adipose tissue (VAT)were co-cultured with HepG2 cells in the transwell chamber. In the presence or absence of exenatide, adipokines content in the supernatant of each experimental group was detected by ELISA. In addition, HepG2 cells in each co-culture group with and without insulin were collected, and the expression of key proteins IRS2, p-IRS2(S731), PI3K-p85, Akt2, and p-Akt2(S473) was detected by western blotting (WB). The results showed that the adipokines IL-8, MCP-1, VEGF, and sTNFR2 in the supernatant of HepG2 cells induced by different regional adipose tissue were significantly higher than those in the HepG2 group, and VAT released more adipokines than SAT. Furthermore, these adipokines were significantly inhibited by exenatide. Importantly, the different regional fat depot affects the IRS2/PI3K/Akt2 insulin signaling pathway of hepatocytes. Exenatide can up-regulate the expression of hepatocyte proteins IRS2, PI3K-p85, p-Akt2(S731) inhibited by adipose tissue, and down-regulate the expression of hepatocyte proteins p-IRS2(S731) promoted by adipose tissue. The effect of VAT on the expression of these key proteins in hepatocytes is more significant than that of SAT. But there was no statistical difference in the expression of Akt2 protein among each experimental group, suggesting that exenatide has no influence on the expression of Akt2 protein in hepatocytes. In conclusion, exenatide may improve hepatic insulin resistance (IR) by inhibiting adipokines and regulating the expression of key proteins in the IRS2/PI3K/Akt2 pathway.

Interference alignment (IA) is one of the most promising techniques to eliminate interference in multiuser multiantenna systems. Simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) technology is applied to harvest energy from radio frequency signals in green communications, while interference signal is assumed to be utilized as energy supply source in SWIPT. In this paper, an enhanced maximum signal to interference plus noise ratio (MAX-SINR) strategy with interference leakage power constraint is proposed, which realizes a tradeoff between information transmission and interference leakage in multiuser multiantenna SWIPT systems. Optimization problem is formulated and a three-step optimization solution is proposed. Finally, the problem can be transformed to a standard semi-definite programming (SDP) to obtain optimal power splitting factor and system sum-rate (spectral efficiency). Simulation results are presented to show that system sum-rate performance is enhanced with the increasing of receiving antenna numbers. The tradeoff between sum-rate and the harvested energy can be realized via the proposed IA strategy.

Ma bamboo (Dendrocalamus latiflorus Munro) is the most widely cultivated clumping bamboo in Southern China and is valuable for both consumption and wood production. The development of bamboo shoots involving the occurrence of lateral buds is unique, and it affects both shoot yield and the resulting timber. Plant-specific TCP transcription factors are involved in plant growth and development, particularly in lateral bud outgrowth and morphogenesis. However, the comprehensive information of the TCP genes in Ma bamboo remains poorly understood. In this study, 66 TCP transcription factors were identified in Ma bamboo at the genome-wide level. Members of the same subfamily had conservative gene structures and conserved motifs. The collinear analysis demonstrated that segmental duplication occurred widely in the TCP transcription factors of Ma bamboo, which mainly led to the expansion of a gene family. Cis-acting elements related to growth and development and stress response were found in the promoter regions of DlTCPs. Expression patterns revealed that DlTCPs have tissue expression specificity, which is usually highly expressed in shoots and leaves. Subcellular localization and transcriptional self-activation experiments demonstrated that the five candidate TCP proteins were typical self-activating nuclear-localized transcription factors. Additionally, the transcriptome analysis of the bamboo shoot buds at different developmental stages helped to clarify the underlying functions of the TCP members during the growth of bamboo shoots. DlTCP12-C, significantly downregulated as the bamboo shoots developed, was selected to further verify its molecular function in Arabidopsis. The DlTCP12-C overexpressing lines exhibited a marked reduction in the number of rosettes and branches compared with the wild type in Arabidopsis, suggesting that DlTCP12-C conservatively inhibits lateral bud outgrowth and branching in plants. This study provides useful insights into the evolutionary patterns and molecular functions of the TCP transcription factors in Ma bamboo and provides a valuable reference for further research on the regulatory mechanism of bamboo shoot development and lateral bud growth.

The Jiangzhe Area was relatively common area that rely on industrial process for rapid development with serious heavy metals contamination. This study investigated the spatial, vertical and speciation distribution, correlation of heavy metals, as well as assessed pollution and health risks in three representative contamination industries at Jingjiang (electroplating site), Taizhou (e-waste recycling site) and Wenzhou (leather production site) in the Jiangzhe Area. The results indicated that the Cr(VI) pollution was serious in all three sites and there was a tendency to gradually decrease with depth. As for other heavy metals, not only the total concentration, but also the addition of acid soluble and reducible speciation generally decreased with soil depth at Jingjiang and Taizhou sites. Stable culm variants are valuable and important material for the study of culm development in bamboo plants. However, to date, there are few reports on the mechanism of variation of these bamboo variants. Phyllostachys nidularia f. farcta (Shidu bamboo) is a bamboo variant with stable phenotypes such as a dwarf culm with a thickened wall. In this study, we systematically investigated the cytological characteristics and underlying mechanism of morphological variation in culms of this variant using anatomical, mathematical statistical, physiological, and genomic methods. The anatomical observation and statistical results showed that the lateral increase of ground tissue in the inner layer of culm wall and the enlargement of vascular bundles are the anatomical essence of the wall thickening of Shidu bamboo; the limited elongation of fiber cells and the decrease in the number of parenchyma cells longitudinally are probably the main causes of the shortening of its internodes. A number of genes involved in the gibberellin synthesis pathway and in the synthesis of cell wall components are differentially expressed between the variant and its prototype, Ph. nidularia, and may play an important role in determining the phenotype of internode shortening in Shidu bamboo. The decrease in gibberellin content and the content of the major chemical components of the cell wall of Shidu bamboo confirmed the results of the above transcriptome. In addition, the variation in culm morphology in Shidu bamboo had little effect on the volume of the culm wall of individual internodes, suggesting that the decrease in the total number of internodes and the decrease in dry matter content (lignin, cellulose, etc.) may be the main factor for the sharp decline in culm biomass of Shidu bamboo.

Metastasis is associated with poor prognosis in cancer and is a multistep process that includes invasion and migration. Several epigenetic factors are involved in this process, including chromobox protein homolog 8 (CBX8). Here, we show that CBX8 is overexpressed in many cancers compared with normal tissues. Functional analyses indicated that CBX8 promoted invasion and migration in glioblastoma, breast cancer, and lung cancer in vitro and in vivo. WNK2 was identified as a target gene of CBX8, which interacted with the WNK2 promoter to suppress WNK2 expression and activity. WNK2 acted as an antioncogene, and decreased WNK2 levels resulted in high activity of matrix metalloprotease (MMP)-2 and RAC1, which play a central role in invasion and migration, respectively. There was a positive relationship between MMP2 and RAC1 activity in CBX8-modulated cell lines. In addition, WNK2 negatively regulated MMP2 and RAC1 activity. Collectively, the results indicated that CBX8 promoted invasion and migration by targeting WNK2, which resulted in increased RAC1 and MMP2 expression and activity. Therefore, CBX8 may be a novel therapeutic target to treat metastatic cancers.

Abstract This study aimed to analyze aspartate aminotransferase (AST) to alanine aminotransferase (ALT) ratio in COVID-19 patients. After exclusion, 567 inpatients were included in this study and separated into two groups according to their AST/ALT ratio on admission. Death was regarded as poor prognosis in this study. Of 567 patients, 200 (35.3%) had AST/ALT ≥ 1.38. Of the 200 patients, older age (median age 60 years), myalgia (64 [32%] cases), fatigue (91 [45.5%] cases), some comorbidities and outcomes were significantly different from patients with AST/ALT

Moso bamboo (Phyllostachys edulis) is the most important monopodial bamboo species worldwide. Without a genetic transformation system, it is difficult to verify the functions of genes controlling important traits and conduct molecular breeding in moso bamboo. Here, we established a plant regeneration system from immature embryos. Calli were induced on MS medium added 4–6 mg⋅L–1 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) with high efficiency (>60%). A plant growth regulator combination of 0.5 mg⋅L–1 1-naphthylacetic acid (NAA), 2.0 mg⋅L–1 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP), and 3.0 mg⋅L–1 zeatin (ZT) was suitable for shoot differentiation, and the shoot induction frequency was increased to 43% after 0.5 mg⋅L–1 abscisic acid (ABA) pretreatment. An effective antibiotic screening concentration was determined by hygromycin sensitivity test. We further optimized the Agrobacterium concentration and added vacuum infiltration for infection, which improves the transient expression efficiency. A genetic transformation system was established for the first time in moso bamboo, with the transformation efficiency of approximately 5%. To optimize genome editing, two endogenous U3 small nuclear RNA (snRNA) promoters were isolated and used to drive small guide RNA (sgRNA) expression. The results showed that the PeU3.1 promoter exhibited higher efficiency, and it was used for subsequent genome editing. Finally, homozygous pds1pds2 mutants were obtained by an efficient CRISPR/Cas9 genome-editing system. These technical systems will be conducive to gene functional validation and accelerate the molecular breeding process of moso bamboo.

This paper presents some techniques to improve the linearity of traditional resistive feedback PGAs. By utilizing the switched op-amp in the PGA, the MOS switches in the feedback resistor array can be eliminated and thus the PGA’s linearity can be improved. The PGA’s linearity is further improved with an additional capacitor, which is used for pre-charging the sampling capacitor to strengthen its capability to drive the sampling capacitor without any extra power consumption. The pre-charge technique is especially suitable for the case where the PGA drives a large sampling capacitance. Implemented in SMIC 0.18 um CMOS technology, the proposed PGA can achieve a gain of 0.5 or 1 and consumes 4.68 mW at a single 5 V supply with the switched output stage enabled. When driving a 20 pF sampling capacitor at a sampling frequency of 200 kHz, the simulation results show that the proposed PGA can give a 9 dBc improvement in SFDR of the sampled signal compared to the traditional PGA design and the SFDR can reach up to 114 dBc.

Adequately designed and positioned surface textures are recognized as a promising way to increase load-carrying capacity and reduce frictional losses of journal bearings. The aim of this work is to analyze the local lubrication mechanisms of textures in journal bearings from microflow perspective, while considering the interactions between textures and the film formation in the whole bearing. For this purpose, hydrodynamic lubrication models of textured journal bearings are built. The results show that placing textures downstream of the high-pressure region leads to a reduced friction force, with a less severe loss of load-carrying capacity. The effects of textures on the load-carrying capacity include the positive micro-hydrodynamic pressure effect and the negative effect caused by the discontinuity of the high-pressure region. The micro-hydrodynamic pressure of textures can be generated on one hand by limiting pressure drop (cavitation) in the divergent gap and on the other hand by the inertia effect. For the friction, the vortex inside textures affects the friction force by influencing the maximum shear stress at the minimum oil film. In turn the vortex is influenced by the bearing lubrication film. The research provides the fundamental reference and theoretical basis for the design and optimization of textured journal bearings.
