Object detection is a key task in automatic driving, and the poor performance of small object detection is a challenge that needs to be overcome. Previously, object detection networks could detect large-scale objects in ideal environments, but detecting small objects was very difficult. To address this problem, we propose a multi-layer fusion 3D object detection network. First, a dense fusion (D-fusion) method is proposed, which is different from the traditional fusion method. By fusing the feature maps of each layer, more semantic information of the fusion network can be preserved. Secondly, in order to preserve small objects at the feature map level, we designed a feature extractor with an adaptive fusion module (AFM), which reduces the impact of the background on small objects by weighting and fusing different feature layers. Finally, an attention mechanism was added to the feature extractor to accelerate the training efficiency and convergence speed of the network by suppressing information that is irrelevant to the task. The experimental results show that our proposed approach greatly improves the baseline and outperforms most state-of-the-art methods on KITTI object detection benchmarks.

Abstract Background This study aimed to develop an integrated model for predicting the occurrence of postoperative seizures in patients with diffuse high-grade gliomas (DHGGs) using clinical and RNA-seq data. Methods Patients with DHGGs, who received prophylactic anti-epileptic drugs (AEDs) for three months following surgery, were enrolled into the study. The patients were assigned randomly into training (n = 166) and validation (n = 42) cohorts. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified based on preoperative glioma-related epilepsy (GRE) history. Least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) logistic regression analysis was used to construct a predictive gene-signature for the occurrence of postoperative seizures. The final integrated prediction model was generated using the gene-signature and clinical data. Receiver operating characteristic analysis and calibration curve method were used to evaluate the accuracy of the gene-signature and prediction model using the training and validation cohorts. Results A seven-gene signature for predicting the occurrence of postoperative seizures was developed using LASSO logistic regression analysis of 623 DEGs. The gene-signature showed satisfactory predictive capacity in the training cohort [area under the curve (AUC) = 0.842] and validation cohort (AUC = 0.751). The final integrated prediction model included age, temporal lobe involvement, preoperative GRE history, and gene-signature-derived risk score. The AUCs of the integrated prediction model were 0.878 and 0.845 for the training and validation cohorts, respectively. Conclusion We developed an integrated prediction model for the occurrence of postoperative seizures in patients with DHGG using clinical and RNA-Seq data. The findings of this study may contribute to the development of personalized management strategies for patients with DHGGs and improve our understanding of the mechanisms underlying GRE in these patients.

Abstract Background Woody plants provide the most abundant biomass resource that is convertible for biofuels. Since lignin is a crucial recalcitrant factor against lignocellulose hydrolysis, genetic engineering of lignin biosynthesis is considered as a promising solution. Many MYB transcription factors have been identified to involve in the regulation of cell wall formation or phenylpropanoid pathway. In a previous study, we identified that PtoMYB115 contributes to the regulation of proanthocyanidin pathway, however, little is known about its role in lignocellulose biosynthesis and biomass saccharification in poplar. Results Here, we detected the changes of cell wall features and examined biomass enzymatic saccharification for bioethanol production under various chemical pretreatments in PtoMYB115 transgenic plants. We reported that PtoMYB115 might specifically regulate lignin biosynthesis to affect xylem development. Overexpression of PtoMYB115 altered lignin biosynthetic gene expression, resulting in reduced lignin deposition, raised S/G and beta-O-4 linkage, resulting in a significant reduction in cellulase adsorption with lignin and an increment in cellulose accessibility. These alterations consequently improved lignocellulose recalcitrance for significantly enhanced biomass saccharification and bioethanol yield in the PtoMYB115-OE transgenic lines. In contrast, the knockout of PtoMYB115 by CRISPR/Cas9 showed reduced woody utilization under various chemical pretreatments. Conclusions This study shows that PtoMYB115 plays an important role in specifically regulating lignin biosynthesis and improving lignocellulose features. The enhanced biomass saccharification and bioethanol yield in the PtoMYB115-OE lines suggests that PtoMYB115 is a candidate gene for genetic modification to facilitate the utilization of biomass.

Tight sandstone reservoirs are characterized by poor physical properties, strong heterogeneity, and complex pore structures, resulting in low reservoir saturation calculation accuracy, and the log interpretations do not match the gas test results. In response to the aforementioned problems, the tight sandstone reservoir of the third member of the Xujiahe Formation of the Dayi structure in the Western Sichuan Depression was investigated through a series of experiments on petrophysical properties, casting thin-section identification, rock resistivity, nuclear magnetic resonance, and high-pressure mercury intrusion. Then, after a systematic analysis of the influence of different factors, including physical properties, mineral composition, and pore structure, on the rock-electric parameters, the parameters of the Archie model were appropriately corrected. The results showed that, for tight sandstone reservoirs, the cementation exponent was mainly affected by the physical properties and clay content, and the saturation exponent was controlled by the proportion of relatively large pore components in the total pore system. Therefore, the non-linear least squares method was used to construct the variable cementation index model; the pseudo-capillary pressure curve was constructed, and a new parameter “the large-pore proportion,” which is used to optimize the saturation exponent, was proposed in combination with the fractal theory. Finally, an Archie model with variable parameters was used to process the actual logging data in the study area. The results show that this method can obtain more accurate gas saturation, providing a new idea and method for fine sandstone saturation logging evaluation.

The 2008 8.0 Ms Wenchuan earthquake caused serious ecological degradation in the northwest of China’s Sichuan Province. Elucidating landscape fragmentation and spatial pattern of post-earthquake landscape is of great interest in order to improve ecological restoration and predict the spatial distribution of damaged ecosystems in earthquake-affected areas. We used four real-time remote sensing images to analyze the landscape pattern characteristics and spatial autocorrelation of the Longxi River Basin before and after the Wenchuan earthquake during the period from 2005 to 2015. In the study period, the degree of landscape fragmentation increased 1 year after the earthquake in 2009 but decreased in 2011 and 2015. The spatial distribution of forest, farmland, and shrub-grassland had significantly positive spatial correlation and the characteristics of spatial aggregation from 2005 to 2015. Construction land had no significant spatial correlation before the earthquake in 2005, but significantly positive spatial correlation after the earthquake, while traffic land had no significant spatial correlation across the study period. Unlike the other landscape types, geological disasters changed from a significantly negative spatial correlation before the earthquake to a significantly positive spatial correlation after the earthquake. However, the positive autocorrelation of all landscape types decreased with the increase of space distance, but in different distance-decay rates. The High-high spatial aggregation areas of geological disasters and construction land clustered gradually upstream of the basin and distributed in Longchi town, respectively; those of farmland distributed in the southeast of the basin increased in 2009 but then decreased, while those of forests had the opposite pattern as the dominant landscape type after the earthquake. Our results elucidated the spatial structure and distribution features of the Longxi River Basin to give a theoretical foundation for assessing the effects of ecological restoration and reconstruction management in earthquake-affected areas.

A stereolithography process with thermal assistance is proposed in this work to address the tradeoff between the flowability and the high concentration of solute loadings at room temperature, through which the improved performance of polymers prepared using stereolithography 3D printing can be achieved. For the experiment, polyethylene glycol diacrylate (PEGDA) with a high molecular weight of 4000 is adopted to improve the mechanical properties of 2-Hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA). For the polymer of HEMA, the highest soluble concentration of PEGDA is about 20 wt% at 25 °C (room temperature) while the concentration could be raised up to 40 wt% as the temperature increases to 60 °C. The 3D printing tests showed that the objects could be easily fabricated with the HEMA polymer loaded with 40 wt% of PEGDA through the thermally assisted projection stereolithography technology. By adding the 40 wt% of PEGDA, the Young’s modulus has been enhanced by nearly 390% compared to the HEMA resin without solute, of which the Young’s modulus is 63.31 ± 2.72 MPa. The results of the cell proliferation test proved that the HEMA resin loaded with PEGDA led to a better biocompatibility compared to the HEMA resin without the loading of the PEGDA solute. All of the results demonstrate that the polymer loaded with high solute is feasible to be precisely 3D-printed using the projection stereolithography process with thermal assistance, and the improved mechanical properties are beneficial for biomedical applications.

Abstract Background COVID-19 infection can cause life-threatening respiratory disease. This study aimed to fully characterize the clinical features associated with postponed viral shedding time and disease progression, then develop and validate two prognostic discriminant models. Methods This study included 125 hospitalized patients with COVID-19, for whom 44 parameters were recorded, including age, gender, underlying comorbidities, epidemiological features, laboratory indexes, imaging characteristics and therapeutic regimen, et al. Fisher's exact test and Mann–Whitney test were used for feature selection. All models were developed with fourfold cross-validation, and the final performances of each model were compared by the Area Under Receiving Operating Curve (AUROC). After optimizing the parameters via L2 regularization, prognostic discriminant models were built to predict postponed viral shedding time and disease progression of COVID-19 infection. The test set was then used to detect the predictive values via assessing models’ sensitivity and specificity. Results Sixty-nine patients had a postponed viral shedding time (> 14 days), and 28 of 125 patients progressed into severe cases. Accident analysis models play a significant role in accident investigation and analysis. Most traditional models, usually based on a chain of events, have serious limitations when used for complex systems, especially for coal mine accident. HFACS is a widely accepted accident cause model with complex structure and content. Based on HFACS and accident investigation need in China, a new systemic accident analysis method “Six-hierarchy model” is proposed. And the index database of accident causal factors at each hierarchy of coal mine accidents is established. This model provides clear guidance for the prevention of accidents from six levels, which helps to the targeted rectification after accidents and the improvement of safety management level. The source, application scope, advantages and disadvantages of HFACS and six-hierarchy model are compared. The “2.14” gas explosion accident in Sunjiawan coal mine is analyzed by using HFACS and six-hierarchy model and the safety management suggestions are put forward. The study shows that the Six-hierarchy model provides a clear guide for the prevention of accidents from six levels. And it benefits the targeted rectification after accidents and the continuous improvement of safety management.

The initial microprocess of a major cariogenic bacterium Streptococcus mutans forming biofilm at a single-cell level via sucrose-dependent adhesion has not been observed because the cells’ high moisture content caused measurement challenges. To develop a high-sensitivity biosensor chip and a real-time, label-free method to observe bioactive molecule interactions with single cells from oral biofilms. We made the chips of immobilized bacteria by micronano-processing. A surface plasmon resonance imaging (SPRI) system was used to detect and record the association and dissociation microprocess of S. mutans with sucrose/dextran solutions of various concentrations, and the calculus model was adopted to treat the data. At the location of S. mutans, a unique ‘comet-tail’ SPRI signal was observed. The binding patterns of S. mutans differed between individual cells exposed to the same solution as well as between sucrose and dextran. The different cells exhibited different affinities with dissociation constants for sucrose being 5.697 × 10−3 to 3.689 M and for dextran 1.235 × 10−3 to 1.282 M, indicating cell-to-cell heterogeneity. Our SPRI detection method is effective in investigating microbial binding, initial biofilm formation, and oral microecology. It offers new possibilities for studying oral microorganism characteristics and development of oral diseases.

With the rapid data growth driven by smart phone, high-definition television and virtual reality/augmented reality devices and so on, the launched 5G and upcoming 6G wireless communications tend to utilize millimeter wave (mmWave) to achieve broad bandwidth. In order to compensate for the high propagation loss in mmWave wireless communications and track the moving users, beamforming and beamsteering are indispensable enabling technologies. These have promising potential to be realized through the use of optical beamforming networks (OBFNs) that have a wider bandwidth and smaller size, lower power consumption, and lower loss compared to those of their electric counterparts. In this paper, we systematically review various OBFN architectures using true time delays and optical phase shifters, as well as discuss performances of different architectures, scalable technologies that promote the advancement of OBFNs, and the application potentials of OBFNs. Two-dimensional OBFNs with discrete components or integrated optical devices have been elaborated, in addition to one-dimensional architectures. Moreover, the state-of-the-art technologies relative to reducing the size, loss and nonlinearity of OBFNs have also been discussed here.

As a chemical platform, 2,3-Butanediol (2,3-BD) has been widely applied in various industrial fields. In this study, to enhance the production of 2,3-BD by Saccharomyces cerevisiae L7, Plackett–Burman (PB) multifactorial design, the steepest climb test and central composite design (CCD) were employed to optimize the culturing conditions of S. cerevisiae L7. The results show that acetic acid, peptone and glucose were contributing factors for 2,3-BD production. Subsequently, a satisfactory production of 2,3-BD (13.52 ± 0.12 g/L) was reached under optimal conditions, which was 3.12 times higher than before optimization. Furthermore, fed-batch fermentation was carried out under optimized culture conditions, and a higher production and yield efficiency of 2,3-BD were achieved (21.83 ± 0.56 g/L and 0.15 ± 0.01 g/g, respectively) when glucose (20 g/L) and acetic acid (0.2 g/L) were added at 12, 24, 36, 48 and 60 h. Therefore, the production and yield efficiency of 2,3-BD were higher than those without fed-batch fermentation (61.46% and 58.51%, respectively). These results provide good support and a technical foundation for the large-scale industrial production of 2,3-BD by Saccharomyces cerevisiae.

Use of the longitudinal critical velocity in tunnel fires may destroy the stratification of smoke downstream, which is not conducive to the evacuation of downstream tunnel users. Reducing the longitudinal velocity can maintain stratification, but the appropriate longitudinal velocity range is unknown. Stratification of smoke under the longitudinal velocity is studied using Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS). The aims of this paper are to explore the relationship between the longitudinal velocity and smoke stratification and to obtain a proper velocity range that can maintain clear downstream stratification. Based on Newman`s theory, the “stratification velocity” is proposed, which is the maximum velocity that maintains downstream smoke stratification. A good correspondence between the average Froude number within 200 m downstream and the longitudinal velocity and heat release rate (HRR) is found. The correlation between the temperature stratification and Froude number is obtained. Fr = 0.49 can be used to distinguish whether the stratification is clear. The relationship between the critical velocity and the stratification velocity is also discussed.

Abstract C18 ceramide plays an important role in the occurrence and development of oral squamous cell carcinoma. However, the function of ceramide synthase 1, a key enzyme in C18 ceramide synthesis, in oral squamous cell carcinoma is still unclear. The aim of our study was to investigate the relationship between ceramide synthase 1 and oral cancer. In this study, we found that the expression of ceramide synthase 1 was downregulated in oral cancer tissues and cell lines. In a mouse oral squamous cell carcinoma model induced by 4-nitroquinolin-1-oxide, ceramide synthase 1 knockout was associated with the severity of oral malignant transformation. Immunohistochemical studies showed significant upregulation of PCNA, MMP2, MMP9, and BCL2 expression and downregulation of BAX expression in the pathological hyperplastic area. In addition, ceramide synthase 1 knockdown promoted cell proliferation, migration, and invasion in vitro. Overexpression of CERS1 obtained the opposite effect. Ceramide synthase 1 knockdown caused endoplasmic reticulum stress and induced the VEGFA upregulation. Activating transcription factor 4 is responsible for ceramide synthase 1 knockdown caused VEGFA transcriptional upregulation. In addition, mild endoplasmic reticulum stress caused by ceramide synthase 1 knockdown could induce cisplatin resistance. Taken together, our study suggests that ceramide synthase 1 is downregulated in oral cancer and promotes the aggressiveness of oral squamous cell carcinoma and chemotherapeutic drug resistance.

BackgroundSome gliomas in sensorimotor areas induce motor deficits, while some do not. Cortical destruction and reorganization contribute to this phenomenon, but detailed reasons remain unclear. This study investigated the differences of the functional connectivity and topological properties in the contralesional sensorimotor network (cSMN) between patients with motor deficit and those with normal motor function.MethodsWe retrospectively reviewed 65 patients (32 men) between 2017 and 2020. The patients were divided into four groups based on tumor laterality and preoperative motor status (deficit or non-deficit). Thirty-three healthy controls (18 men) were enrolled after matching for sex, age, and educational status. Graph theoretical measurement was applied to reveal alterations of the topological properties of the cSMN by analyzing resting-state functional MRI.ResultsThe results for patients with different hemispheric gliomas were similar. The clustering coefficient, local efficiency, transitivity, and vulnerability of the cSMN significantly increased in the non-deficit group and decreased in the deficit group compared to the healthy group (p < 0.05). Moreover, the nodes of the motor-related thalamus showed a significantly increased nodal efficiency and nodal local efficiency in the non-deficit group and decreased in the deficit group compared with the healthy group (p < 0.05).ConclusionsWe posited the existence of two stages of alterations of the preoperative motor status. In the compensatory stage, the cSMN sacrificed stability to acquire high efficiency and to compensate for impaired motor function. With the glioma growing and the motor function being totally damaged, the cSMN returned to a stable state and maintained healthy hemispheric motor function, but with low efficiency.

BackgroundGlioma-related epilepsy (GRE) is a common symptom in patients with prefrontal glioma. Epilepsy onset is associated with functional network alterations. This study investigated alterations of functional networks in patients with prefrontal glioma and GRE.MethodsSixty-five patients with prefrontal lobe gliomas were retrospectively assessed and classified into GRE and non-GRE groups. Additionally, 25 healthy participants were enrolled after matching for general information. Imaging data were acquired within 72 h in pre-operation. The sensorimotor network was used to delineate alterations in functional connectivity (FC) and topological properties. One-way analysis of variance and post-hoc analysis with Bonferroni correction were used to calculate differences of FC and topological properties.ResultsAll significant alterations were solely found in the sensorimotor network. Irrespective of gliomas located in the left or right prefrontal lobes, the edge between medial Brodmann area 6 and caudal ventrolateral Brodmann area 6 decreased FC in the GRE group compared with the non-GRE group [p < 0.0001 (left glioma), p = 0.0002 (right glioma)]. Moreover, the shortest path length decrease was found in the GRE group compared with the non-GRE group [p = 0.0292 (left glioma) and p = 0.0129 (right glioma)].ConclusionsThe reduction of FC between the medial BA 6 (supplementary motor area) and caudal ventrolateral BA 6 in the ipsilateral hemisphere and the shortening of the path length of the sensorimotor network were characteristics alterations in patients with GRE onset. These findings fill in the gap which is the relationship between GRE onset and the alterations of functional networks in patients with prefrontal glioma.Significance StatementGlioma related epilepsy is the most common symptom of prefrontal glioma. It is important to identify characteristic alterations in functional networks in patients with GRE. We found that all significant alterations occurred in the sensorimotor network. Moreover, a decreased FC in the supplementary motor area and a shortening of the path’s length are additional characteristics of glioma-related epilepsy. We believe that our findings indicate new directions of research that will contribute to future investigations of glioma-related epilepsy onset.

The aim of this study is to investigate the differences in the accumulation capacity of chrysolaminarin among six Tribonema species and to isolate this polysaccharide for immunomodulatory activity evaluation. The results showed that T. aequale was the most productive strain with the highest content and productivity of chrysolaminarin, which were 17.20% (% of dry weight) and 50.91 mg/L/d, respectively. Chrysolaminarin was then extracted and isolated from this alga, and its monosaccharide composition was mainly composed of a glucose (61.39%), linked by β-D-(1→3) (main chain) and β-D-(1→6) (branch chain) glycosidic bonds, with a molecular weight of less than 6 kDa. In vitro immunomodulatory assays showed that it could activate RAW264.7 cells at a certain concentration (1000 μg/mL), as evidenced by the increased phagocytic activity and upregulated mRNA expression levels of IL-1β, IL6, TNF-α and Nos2. Moreover, Western blot revealed that this polysaccharide stimulated the phosphorylation of p-65, p-38 and JNK in NF-κB and MAPK signaling pathways. Overall, these findings provide a reference for the further development and utilization of algae-based chrysolaminarin, while also offering an in-depth understanding of the immunoregulatory mechanism.

Combustible gases often lead to fire and explosion accidents due to their unsafe characteristics. Furthermore, their explosion limits are influenced by various factors. In the industrial production process, the operating unit is often in a high-temperature environment, and the multi-component gas explosion limits under this condition are difficult to determine. Therefore, it is urgent to have a universal theoretical prediction model to rapidly predict the multi-component gas explosion limits at high temperatures. This paper proposes a theoretical prediction model for the lower explosion limit of multi-combustible gases containing inert gases at different temperatures based on the heat balance equation and radiation heat loss, which can be used to solve the lower explosion limit of the “multiple combustible gases + multiple inert gases” mixture at different temperatures. It solves the explosion limits of methane, ethylene, propane, and propylene mixed with nitrogen with relative errors of 2.66%, 5.98%, 6.82%, and 5.88%, respectively, compared with experimental data. It also obtained theoretically predicted gas explosion limits for methane, ethylene, propane, and propylene mixed with carbon dioxide, with relative errors of 3.24%, 5.13%, 6.19%, and 5.58%, respectively. Although the reference experimental data made the model validation somewhat limited, validation with data for multiple single gases and temperatures still gave the model considerable reliability.

An interface-corrected diffuse interface method is presented in this work for the simulation of incompressible multiphase flows with large density ratios. In this method, an interface correction term together with a mass correction term is introduced into the diffuse-interface Cahn–Hilliard model to maintain both mass conservation and interface shapes between binary fluids simultaneously. The interface correction term is obtained by connecting the signed distance functions in the Hamilton–Jacobian equation with the order parameter of the Cahn–Hilliard model. In addition, an improved multiphase lattice Boltzmann flux solver is introduced, in which the fluxes are obtained by considering the contributions of the particle distribution functions before and after the streaming process through a local switch function. The proposed method is validated by simulating multiphase flows, such as the Laplace law, the evolution of a square bubble, the merging of two bubbles, Rayleigh–Taylor instability, and a droplet impacting on a film with a density ratio of 1000. Numerical results show that the presented method can not only reduce the interface diffusion but also has good control over the interface thickness and mass conservation. The improved numerical method has great potential for use in practical applications involving multiphase flows.

Microbial communities in sediment play an important role in the circulation of nutrients in aquatic ecosystems. In this study, the main environmental factors and sediment microbial communities were investigated bimonthly from August 2018 to June 2020 at River Taizicheng, a shallow temperate mountain river at the core area of the 2022 Winter Olympics. Microbial community structure was analyzed using 16S rRNA genes (bacteria 16S V3 + V4 and archaea 16S V4 + V5) and high-throughput sequencing technologies. Structure equation model (SEM) and canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) were used to explore the driving environmental factors of the microbial community. Our results showed that the diversity indices of the microbial community were positively influenced by sediment nutrients but negatively affected by water nutrients. Bacteroidetes and Proteobacteria were the most dominant phyla. The best-fitted SEM model indicated that environmental variables not only affected community abundance directly, but also indirectly through influencing their diversity. Flavobacterium, Arenimonas and Terrimonas were the dominant genera as a result of enriched nutrients. The microbial community had high spatial–temporal autocorrelation. CCA showed that DO, WT and various forms of phosphorus were the main variables affecting the temporal and spatial patterns of the microbial community in the river. The results will be helpful in understanding the driving factors of microbial communities in temperate monsoon areas.

In this study, powdered activated carbon (PAC) was added to replace the silica in a cementitious microfiltration membrane (CM) to solve the problems of the low mechanical strength and short lifetime of CMs. The carbon-cementitious microfiltration membrane (CCM) was fabricated by the dry pressing method and cured at room temperature. The bending strength of CCM was 12.69 MPa, which was about three times more than that of CM. The average pore size was 0.129 μm, and was reduced by about 80% compared to that of CM. The addition of PAC did not reduce the degradation efficiency of membrane catalytic ozonation. Because of the strong alkaline buffering ability of CCM, the CCM–ozone coupling process could eliminate the effect of the pH value of the solution. The strong alkaline environment inside the membrane pores effectively accelerated the ozone decomposition and produced oxidizing radicals, which accelerated the reaction rate and improved the utilization rate of ozone. The CCM–catalytic ozonation reaction of organic compounds occurred within the pores and membrane surface, resulting in the pH of the solution belonging to the neutral range. The addition of PAC accelerated the mass transfer and made the pollutants and oxidant react in the membrane pores and on the membrane surface. The reuse experiments of the CCM–ozone coupling process for removing nitrobenzene demonstrated that CCM has good catalytic activity and reuse stability. It broadens the application scope of CCM in the field of drinking water and provides theoretical support for the practical application of CCM.

In this study, a low-cost cementitious microfiltration membrane (CM) with a catalytic ozone oxidation function for the removal of organic pollutants was fabricated by using cementitious and C-10 μm silica powders at a certain silica–cementitious particle ratio (s/c). The effect of the s/c on the pore size distribution and mechanical strength of the membrane was investigated. The membrane pore size showed a bimodal distribution, and the higher the s/c, the closer the second peak was to the accumulated average particle size of silica. The increase in the s/c led to a decrease in the bending strength of the membrane. The cross-sectional morphology by SEM and crystal structure by XRD of CMs confirmed that a calcium silicate hydrate gel was generated around the silica powder to improve the mechanical strength of the CM. Considering the bending strength and pore size distribution of CMs, s/c = 0.5 was selected as the optimal membrane fabrication condition. The FT-IR results characterizing the surface functional groups of CMs were rich in surface hydroxyl groups with the ability to catalyze ozone oxidation for organic pollutant removal. Six small molecule organic pollutants were selected as model compounds for the efficiency experiments via a CM–ozone coupling process to prove the catalytic property of the CM. The CM has an alkaline buffering effect and can stabilize the initial pH of the solution in the catalytic ozonation process. The reuse experiments of the CM–ozone coupling process demonstrated the broad spectrum of the CM catalytic performance and self-cleaning properties. The results of this study provide the basis and experimental support to expand the practical application of CMs.

Microresonator-based frequency combs have potential to achieve on-chip frequency metrology. To obtain high-power comb lines at f and 2f for self-referenced stabilization, we evaluate the feasibility of building a fully integrated comb generator with spectral broadening. Comparing two types of nonlinear waveguides based on Si and chalcogenides, we find that the system feasibility relies on integrated waveguide amplifiers. If with a high-gain amplifier, a dispersion-engineered chalcogenide waveguide is preferred. Otherwise, an Si waveguide performs better. Considering the immaturity of both on-chip amplification technologies for ultrafast pulses and hybrid integration of multiple nonlinear materials, it could be concluded that in near future it is not practical to achieve fully on-chip f-2f self-referenced comb stabilization via subsequent spectral broadening of a Kerr frequency comb. Alternatively, direct generation of octave-spanning Kerr combs via dispersion engineering still remains attractive.

Integrated optical phased arrays can be used for beam shaping and steering with a small footprint, lightweight, high mechanical stability, low price, and high-yield, benefiting from the mature CMOS-compatible fabrication. This paper reviews the development of integrated optical phased arrays in recent years. The principles, building blocks, and configurations of integrated optical phased arrays for beam forming and steering are presented. Various material platforms can be used to build integrated optical phased arrays, e.g., silicon photonics platforms, III/V platforms, and III–V/silicon hybrid platforms. Integrated optical phased arrays can be implemented in the visible, near-infrared, and mid-infrared spectral ranges. The main performance parameters, such as field of view, beamwidth, sidelobe suppression, modulation speed, power consumption, scalability, and so on, are discussed in detail. Some of the typical applications of integrated optical phased arrays, such as free-space communication, light detection and ranging, imaging, and biological sensing, are shown, with future perspectives provided at the end.
