Moisture-electric generators (MEGs), harvesting ubiquitous moisture from the environment for electricity generation, have attracted great interest as power supply devices. However, there are great challenges associated with material availability, fabrication accessibility and operation environment, which are key factors to achieve high output with low cost for practical applications, and a deeper understanding of the underlying mechanism of interactions between MEGs and water is urgently required. Here, a whey protein available in supermarkets is used to fabricate low-cost MEGs with controllable performance through tuning surface charges and hydrophilicity, which provides new insights into the electricity generation mechanism and large-scale application. The MEGs exhibit the highest voltage output of 1.45 V at a room humidity level of 40% relative humidity. The whey protein films possess the merits of low cost (70 times cheaper than commonly used polymers), being flexible and semi-transparent, and having self-healing ability, presenting excellent comprehensive device performance. Besides, MEGs can operate well at extreme temperatures (-20 degrees C or 50 degrees C) and power a location tracker in a desert with 26% relative humidity. The modified functional layers with selective ion absorption and controllable outputs provided a deeper understanding of electricity generation in MEGs and demonstrated great potential in powering a wide range of electronic devices in various dynamic environments with high sustainability and reliability. Strong, long-range dipole-dipole interactions between interlayer excitons (IXs) can lead to new multiparticle correlation regimes

Moiré superlattices are formed by stacking 2D materials with a twist angle and have recently gained attention as a platform for investigating the interactions and correlations of moiré-trapped interlayer excitons (IXs). However, understanding these excitons remains challenging, as theoretical predictions suggest the existence of both parallel and antiparallel dipole-dipole interactions, while only repulsive interactions with a parallel configuration have been experimentally observed. Here, we investigate the localization of strain-induced moiré interlayer excitons in twisted transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) superlattices. Our results reveal that modulating the moiré trap in strain-engineered homobilayers leads to a higher density and emission efficiency of IXs, while also enhancing dipole-dipole interactions. In particular, we observe a transition in the nature of the moiré interlayer exciton-dipole interaction from repulsion to attraction in a twist-angle homostructure, resulting in a stable interlayer biexciton (IXX) phase with an antiparallel configuration, which had only been theoretically predicted before. Moreover, the moiré trap in homobilayers can be modulated by adjusting the spacing of the Au nanoarrays, which enabled us to achieve IXX emission up to 150 K, the highest temperature reported to date. This breakthrough is expected to pave the way for the observation of a Bose-Einstein condensate at room temperature. Our findings provide new opportunities for studying correlated many-body systems and have implications for developing novel optoelectronic devices and controllable nonlinear optics.

Magnetism in two dimensions is one of the most intriguing and alluring phenomena in condensed matter physics. Atomically thin 2D materials have emerged as a promising platform for exploring magnetic properties, leading to the development of essential technologies such as supercomputing and data storage. Arising from spin and charge dynamics in elementary particles, magnetism has also unraveled promising advances in spintronic devices and spin-dependent optoelectronics and photonics. Recently, antiferromagnetism in 2D materials has received extensive attention, leading to significant advances in their understanding and emerging applications; such materials have zero net magnetic moment yet are internally magnetic. Several theoretical and experimental approaches have been proposed to probe, characterize, and modulate the magnetic states efficiently in such systems. This Review presents the latest developments and current status for tuning the magnetic properties in distinct 2D van der Waals antiferromagnets. Various state-of-the-art optical techniques deployed to investigate magnetic textures and dynamics are discussed. Furthermore, device concepts based on antiferromagnetic spintronics are scrutinized. We conclude with remarks on related challenges and technological outlook in this rapidly expanding field.

In the last decade, two-dimensional organic single crystals (2D OSCs), defined as a class of ultrathin crystals with atomic or molecular level thickness and micrometer-scale-lateral dimension, has emerged as a rising star due to ultrathin feature, high crystallinity, low-structure symmetry, larger material library, diverse processing technique and excellent flexibility, etc. Due to these advantages, 2D OSCs offer exciting application prospects for flexible electronics, optoelectronics, sensing, energy harvesting, biology and medicine, etc. However, it is still challenging to synthesize large-area highly crystalline 2D OSCs as well as investigate their intrinsic properties and structure–property relationships. Herein, we first treat the growth techniques of 2D OSCs carefully and then discuss their novel physics and optoelectronic properties at the 2D limit. A significant effort has been made in evaluating the latest advances in high-performance devices applying 2D OSCs and corresponding heterostructures. In terms of practical applications, their integrations and device arrays are discussed. Furthermore, we point out several important research directions of 2D OSCs and corresponding heterostructures. Finally, the state-of-the-art challenges and future opportunities that include the investigation and application of 2D OSCs have been presented, which will provoke more researchers to come into this field.

Anisotropic 2D materials have been established as a promising candidate for future optoelectronic applications in the previous chapters. But, what makes them suitable for these applications? 2D materials have the capability to host a rich set of electronic states that differ considerably from their bulk counterparts, which is attributed to reduced dielectric screening and quantum confinement. In the recently discovered anisotropic 2D materials this ability is further enhanced due to further confinement in one direction. This results in a wide variety of many-body effects and complexes that have crucial applications for future optoelectronic device applications. These many-body complexes have now been experimentally detected and the high binding energy of these complexes makes them interesting for various applications, even at room temperature. This chapter focusses on addressing the fundamental physics behind light–matter interactions at the 2D limit in the anisotropic materials. It addresses the key fundamental properties of anisotropic 2D materials such as crystal structure, electronic band structure, many-body system behaviour, excitonic effects and subsequent optical properties that make these materials suitable for various future electronic, optoelectronic and miniature device fabrication applications. The chapter highlights their key properties and demonstrated applications that have been recently experimentally established, making these anisotropic 2D materials an interesting avenue for future miniaturized device fabrication and applications.

As a rising star of two-dimensional (2D) materials, 2D organic materials have inspired massive interest due to their remarkable merits such as a large materials library, intrinsic flexibility, diverse synthesis techniques, etc., which provide them with great prospects for flexible optoelectronics applications. Moreover, highly ordered 2D organic materials exhibit ultrathin features, low symmetry and unique anisotropy, and all these open a new avenue to achieve high-performance 2D organic materials devices and benefit their integration into optoelectronics. Herein, we first review several important growth techniques of 2D organic materials. Second, we summarize the recent progress in anisotropy characterizations of 2D organic materials and their applications in the optoelectronics field. Finally, we presented an outlook of anisotropic 2D organic materials in terms of challenges and opportunities. We believe this chapter will be an important reference for designing and developing novel 2D organic materials and integrating them into next-generation optoelectronics, provoking more researchers to come to this field.

Interest in van der Waals materials often stems from a desire to miniaturise existing technologies by exploiting their intrinsic layered structure to create near atomically-thin components that do not suffer from surface defects. One appealing property is easily-switchable yet robust magnetic order, a quality only sparsely demonstrated in the case of in-plane anisotropy. In this work, we use widefield nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center magnetic imaging to measure the properties of individual flakes of CuCrP$_2$S$_6$, a multiferroic van der Waals magnet known to exhibit weak easy-plane anisotropy in the bulk. We chart the crossover between in-plane ferromagnetism in thin flakes down to the trilayer, and the bulk behaviour dominated by a low-field spin-flop transition. Further, by exploiting the directional dependence of NV center magnetometry, we are able to observe an instance of a predominantly out-of-plane ferromagetic phase near zero field, in contradiction with expectation and previous experiments on the bulk material. We attribute this to the presence of surface anisotropies arising from the sample preparation process or exposure to the ambient environment, which is expected to have more general implications for a broader class of weakly anisotropic van der Waals magnets., Comment: 24 pages, 20 figures (including supplementary information)

Two-dimensional materials have attracted significant interest and investigation since the marvellous discovery of graphene. Due to their unique physical, mechanical and optical properties, van der Waals (vdW) materials possess extraordinary potential for application in future optoelectronics devices. Nano-engineering and nano-manufacturing in the atomically thin regime has further opened multifarious avenues to explore novel physical properties. Among them, moiré heterostructures, strain engineering and substrate manipulation have created numerous exotic and topological phenomena such as unconventional superconductivity, orbital magnetism, flexible nanoelectronics and highly efficient photovoltaics. This review comprehensively summarizes the three most influential techniques of nano-engineering in 2D materials. The latest development in the marvels of moiré structures in vdW materials is discussed; in addition, topological structures in layered materials and substrate engineering on the nanoscale are thoroughly scrutinized to highlight their significance in micro- and nano-devices. Finally, we conclude with remarks on challenges and possible future directions in the rapidly expanding field of nanotechnology and nanomaterial.

Hybridization of two-dimensional (2D) magnetic semiconductors with transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDC) monolayers can significantly engineer the light-matter interactions and provide a promising platform for enhanced excitonic systems with artificially tailored band alignments. Here, we report the fabrication of heterostructures with monolayer WS2 on 2D Cr2Ge2Te6 (CGT), which displayed giant photoluminescence enhancement at specific CGT layer numbers. The highly enhanced quantum yield obtained can be explained by novel photoexcited carrier dynamics, facilitated by alternate relaxation channels, resulting in resonance charge transfer at the heterointerface. 2D CGT revealed a strongly layer-dependent work function (up to ∼750 meV), which greatly modulates the band positioning in the heterostructure. These heterostructures conceived both type I and type II band alignments, which are verified by Kelvin probe force microscopy and PL measurements. In addition to layer modulation, we uncover temperature and power dependence of the resonance charge transfer in the multilayer heterostructure. Our findings provide further insights into the ultrafast charge dynamics occurring at the atomic interfaces. The results may pave the way for novel optoelectronics based on van der Waals heterostructures.

Wearable devices are drawing increasing attention in both academia and industry in that they can offer unprecedented information related to human health in real-time and human–machine interactions, which is expected to enable a paradigm shift in the digital world. For this shift to occur, green and sustainable energy technology for powering flexible wearable devices is a roadblock. This paper is dedicated to reviewing cutting-edge wearable power generation methodologies, for which we discuss their pros and cons, underlying physics, and general design/evaluation criteria. Sensor types, materials, processing technology, power consumption, and methods of testing the stretchability and flexibility of wearable devices are also summarized. Based on application scenarios in healthcare, industrial inspection, structural monitoring, armed forces and consumer electronics, an integrated system architecture of wearable, flexible systems is presented. Finally, future perspectives of wearable technologies are outlined by covering the aspects of all-in-one printable wearable electronics, fiber and textile electronics, self-powered self-awareness wearable systems, hybrid-integrated Systems on a Chip (SoC) for flexible electronics, and Internet of Things (IoT)-enabled self-contained systems towards full life cycle monitoring.

Due to unprecedented application prospects such as high-density and low-power multistate storage, spintronics and nanoelectronics, two-dimensional (2D) multiferroics, coupled with at least two ferroic orders, have gotten a lot of interest in recent years. Multiple functions can be achieved in 2D multiferroics via coupling phenomena such as magnetoelectricity, piezoelectricity, and magnetoelasticity, which offers technical support for the creation of multifunctional devices. The research progress of 2D ferromagnetic–ferroelectric multiferroic materials, ferroelectric–ferroelastic multiferroic materials, and ferromagnetic–ferroelastic materials in recent years is reviewed in this paper. The categorization of 2D multiferroics is explored in terms of the multiple sources of ferroelectricity. The top-down approaches and the bottom-up methods used to fabricate 2D multiferroics materials are introduced. Finally, the authors outline potential research prospects and application scenarios for 2D multiferroic materials.

Structural engineering techniques such as local strain engineering and folding provide functional control over critical optoelectronic properties of 2D materials. Local strain engineering at the nanoscale level is practically achieved via permanently deformed wrinkled nanostructures, which are reported to show photoluminescence enhancement, bandgap modulation, and funneling effect. Folding in 2D materials is reported to tune optoelecronic properties via folding angle dependent interlayer coupling and symmetry variation. The accurate and efficient monitoring of local strain vector and folding angle is important to optimize the performance of optoelectronic devices. Conventionally, the accurate measurement of both strain amplitude and strain direction in wrinkled nanostructures requires the combined usage of multiple tools resulting in manufacturing lead time and cost. Here, we demonstrate the usage of a single tool, polarization-dependent second-harmonic generation (SHG), to determine the folding angle and strain vector accurately and efficiently in ultrathin WS2. The folding angle in trilayer WS2 folds exhibiting 1-9 times SHG enhancement is probed through variable approaches such as SHG enhancement factor, maxima and minima SHG phase difference, and linear dichroism. In compressive strain induced wrinkled nanostructures, strain-dependent SHG quenching and enhancement is observed parallel and perpendicular, respectively, to the direction of the compressive strain vector, allowing us to determine the local strain vector accurately using a photoelastic approach. We further demonstrate that SHG is highly sensitive to band-nesting-induced transition (C-peak), which can be significantly modulated by strain. Our results show SHG as a powerful probe to folding angle and strain vector.

Two-dimensional (2D) transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMD) semiconductors exhibit many important structural and optoelectronic properties, such as strong light-matter interactions, direct bandgaps tunable from visible to near-infrared regions, flexibility and atomic thickness, quantum-confinement effects, valley polarization possibilities, and so on. Therefore, they are regarded as a very promising class of materials for next-generation state-of-the-art nano/micro optoelectronic devices. To explore different applications and device structures based on 2D TMDs, intrinsic material properties, their relationships, and evolutions with fabrication parameters need to be deeply understood, very often through a combination of various characterization techniques. Among them, steady-state photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy has been extensively employed. This class of techniques is fast, contactless, and nondestructive and can provide very high spatial resolution. Therefore, it can be used to obtain optoelectronic properties from samples of various sizes (from microns to centimeters) during the fabrication process without complex sample preparation. In this article, the mechanism and applications of steady-state PL spectroscopy in 2D TMDs are reviewed. The first part of this review details the physics of PL phenomena in semiconductors and common techniques to acquire and analyze PL spectra. The second part introduces various applications of PL spectroscopy in 2D TMDs. Finally, a broader perspective is discussed to highlight some limitations and untapped opportunities of PL spectroscopy in characterizing 2D TMDs.

The two-dimensional (2D) materials have been widely developed recently in material characteristics with advanced optical and electrical properties, and they have been extensively studied as candidates for the next generation of optoelectronic devices. This review will mainly focus on the preparation methods and the light emitting applications of 2D transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), 2D black phosphorene (BP) and 2D perovskites. The review will first introduce the preparation methods for TMDs and BP. Due to the variations of band structure, exciton binding energies and light-matter interaction in TMDs and BP, the different light emitting devices (LEDs) designs based on TMDs and BP will be discussed and summarized. Then the review will turn the focus to 2D perovskites, starting with a description of the preparation methods for the different structural perovskites. In order to review and summarize the achievements of 2D perovskites-based LEDs, the high efficiency perovskites LEDs are discussed. Finally, the review will present challenges, opportunities, and outlook for the future development of 2D materials-based light emitting applications.

Two-dimensional materials (2Dm) offer a unique insight into the world of quantum mechanics including van der Waals (vdWs) interactions, exciton dynamics and various other nanoscale phenomena. 2Dm are a growing family consisting of graphene, hexagonal-Boron Nitride (h-BN), transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), monochalcogenides (MNs), black phosphorus (BP), MXenes and 2D organic crystals such as small molecules (e.g., pentacene, C8 BTBT, perylene derivatives, etc.) and polymers (e.g., COF and MOF, etc.). They exhibit unique mechanical, electrical, optical and optoelectronic properties that are highly enhanced as the surface to volume ratio increases, resulting from the transition of bulk to the few- to mono- layer limit. Such unique attributes include the manifestation of highly tuneable bandgap semiconductors, reduced dielectric screening, highly enhanced many body interactions, the ability to withstand high strains, ferromagnetism, piezoelectric and flexoelectric effects. Using 2Dm for mechanical resonators has become a promising field in nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS) for applications involving sensors and condensed matter physics investigations. 2Dm NEMS resonators react with their environment, exhibit highly nonlinear behaviour from tension induced stiffening effects and couple different physics domains. The small size and high stiffness of these devices possess the potential of highly enhanced force sensitivities for measuring a wide variety of un-investigated physical forces. This review highlights current research in 2Dm NEMS resonators from fundamental physics and an applications standpoint, as well as presenting future possibilities using these devices.

Harvesting energy from ubiquitous moisture is attracting growing interest for directly powering electronic devices. However, it is still challenging to fabricate high-performing moisture-electric generators (MEGs) with high and stable electric output. Herein, we report a simple strategy to modify the oxygen-based groups of graphene oxide using hydrochloric acid treatment, which boosts the electric output based on the device structure of graphene oxide/polyvinyl alcohol (GO/PVA) MEGs. The resulting MEG enables a stable voltage of 0.85 V and a current of 9.28 µA (92.8 µA·cm-2), which are among the highest values reported so far. More excitingly, electric output gets further improved by simply assembling four MEG units in series or parallel. Moreover, the MEG shows great commercial potential for flexible and wearable applications. Driven by these advancements, the assembled MEGs can successfully power sensors and calculators. Nano-biotechnology research has become extremely important due to the possibilities in manipulation and characterization of biological molecules through nanodevices. Nanomaterials exhibit exciting electrical, optoelectronic, magnetic, mechanical and chemical properties that can be exploited to develop efficient biosensors or bio-probes. Those unique properties in nanomaterials can also be used in bioimaging and cancer therapeutics, where biomolecules influence the inherent properties in nanomaterials. Effective manipulation of nanomaterial properties can lead to many breakthroughs in nanotechnology applications. Nowadays, 2D nanomaterials have emerged as viable materials for nanotechnology. Large cross-section area and functional availability of 2D or 1D quantum limit in these nanomaterials allow greater flexibility and better nanodevice performance. 2D nanomaterials enable advanced bioelectronics to be more easily integrated due to their atomic thickness, biocompatibility, mechanical flexibility and conformity. Furthermore, with the development of 2D material heterostructures, enhanced material properties can be obtained which can directly influence bio-nanotechnology applications. This article firstly reviews the development of various types of 2D heterostructures in a wide variety of nano-biotechnology applications. Furthermore, future 2D heterostructure scopes in bioimaging, nanomedicine, bio-markers/therapy and bioelectronics are discussed. This paper can be an avenue for providing a wide scope for 2D van der Waals (vdWs) heterostructures in bio- and medical fields.

The discovery of 2D organic semiconductors of atomically thin structures has attracted great attention due to their emerging optical, electronic, optoelectronic and mechatronic properties. Recent progress in such organic nanostructures has opened new opportunities for engineering material properties in many ways, such as, 0D/1D/2D nanoparticles hybridization, strain engineering, atomic doping etc. Moreover, 2D organic nanostructures exhibit a unique feature of bio–functionality and are highly sensitive to bio-analytes. Such peculiar behavior in 2D organics can be utilized to design highly-efficient bio-sensors. Also, a bio-molecular integrated electronic/optoelectronic device with enhanced performance can be attained. Furthermore, the bio-degradable, biocompatible, bio-metabolizable, non-toxic behaviour and natural origin of organic nanomaterials can address the current ecological concerns of increasing inorganic material based electronic waste. This review highlights the benefits of 2D organic semiconductors. Considering the importance of strategic techniques for growing thin 2D organic layers, this review summarizes progress towards this direction. The possible challenges for long-time stability and future research directions in 2D organic nano electronics/optoelectronics are also discussed. We believe that this review article provides immense research interests in organic 2D nanotechnology for exploiting green technologies in the future. Miniaturized light sources are important component for the development of on-chip optical networks. In this work, InGaAs/InP single quantum well (QW) nanowire array light emitting diodes (LEDs) with high uniformity have been demonstrated at telecommunication wavelength with high-speed modulation towards GHz-level operation.

Nonlinear light sources are central to a myriad of applications, driving a quest for their miniaturisation down to the nanoscale. In this quest, nonlinear metasurfaces hold a great promise, as they enhance nonlinear effects through their resonant photonic environment and high refractive index, such as in high-index dielectric metasurfaces. However, despite the sub-diffractive operation of dielectric metasurfaces at the fundamental wave, this condition is not fulfilled for the nonlinearly generated harmonic waves, thereby all nonlinear metasurfaces to date emit multiple diffractive beams. Here, we demonstrate the enhanced single-beam second- and third-harmonic generation in a metasurface of crystalline transition-metal-dichalcogenide material, offering the highest refractive index. We show that the interplay between the resonances of the metasurface allows for tuning of the unidirectional second-harmonic radiation in forward or backward direction, not possible in any bulk nonlinear crystal. Our results open new opportunities for metasurface-based nonlinear light-sources, including nonlinear mirrors and entangled-photon generation., Though high-index dielectric metasurfaces are attractive due to their nonlinear effects, channelling of 2nd and 3rd harmonic generation into a single beam remains a challenge. The authors addressed this using transition-metal-dichalcogenide metasurfaces with tunable nonlinear emission direction.

Two-dimensional (2D) semiconducting materials have been studied extensively for their interesting excitonic and optoelectronic properties arising from strong many-body interactions and quantum confinement at 2D limit. Most of these materials have been inorganic, such as transition metal dichalcogenides, phosphorene, etc. Organic semiconductor materials, on the other hand been investigated for their excellent electrical conductivity and low dielectric coefficients for similar applications in the thin film or bulk material phase. The lack of crystallinity in the thin film and bulk phases has led to ambiguity over the excitonic and electronic/optical band gap characteristics. The recent emergence of 2D organic materials has opened a new domain of high crystallinity and controlled morphology, allowing for the study of low-lying excitonic states and optoelectronic properties. They have been demonstrated to have different excitonic properties compared with the Wannier–Mott excitons in inorganic 2D materials. Here we present our recent experimental observations and analysis of 2D organic semiconductor materials. We discuss the role of high-crystalline and morphology-controlled growth of single-crystalline materials and their optoelectronic properties. The report explains the Frenkel (FR) and charge-transfer (CT) excitons and subsequent light emission and absorption properties in organic materials. The true nature of low-lying excitonic states, which arises from the interaction between CT and FR excitons, is experimentally studied and discussed to reveal the electronic band structure. We then discuss the pure FR behaviour we observed in J–type aggregated organic materials leading to coherent superradiant excitonic emissions. The supertransport of excitons within the organic materials, facilitated by their pure FR nature, and the delocalization of excitons over a large number of molecules are also demonstrated. Finally, we discuss the applications and our vision for these organic 2D materials in fast organic light-emitting diodes, high-speed excitonic circuits, quantum computing devices, and other optoelectronic devices.

Squeezed states are an interesting class of quantum states that have numerous applications. This work presents the design, characterisation, and operation of a bow-tie optical parametric amplifier (OPA) for squeezed vacuum generation. We report the high duty cycle operation and long-term stability of the system that makes it suitable for post-selection based continuous-variable quantum information protocols, cluster-state quantum computing, quantum metrology, and potentially gravitational wave detectors. Over a 50 hour continuous operation, the measured squeezing levels were greater than 10 dB with a duty cycle of 96.6%. Alternatively, in a different mode of operation, the squeezer can also operate 10 dB below the quantum noise limit over a 12 hour period with no relocks, with an average squeezing of 11.9 dB. We also measured a maximum squeezing level of 12.6 dB at 1550 nm. This represents one of the best reported squeezing results at 1550 nm to date for a bow-tie cavity. We discuss the design aspects of the experiment that contribute to the overall stability, reliability, and longevity of the OPA, along with the automated locking schemes and different modes of operation., 7 pages, 5 figures

Zero-phonon line (ZPL) emissions have key applications in single-photon emission sources, quantum information processing, and single-molecule spectroscopy. All recent attempts to realize ZPL emissions are based on the techniques of confining and doping molecules in matrixes or solutions in low-temperature Shpol'skii systems. The requirement of two-component systems reduces the light emission efficiency from the molecules and limits their applications in solid-state electronic applications and quantum computing devices. Here, we report the first experimental demonstration of the Shpol'skii effect in a one-component organic solid-state system at low temperature. We observe a ZPL emission with a width of ∼1 to 2 nm and a high value of the Debye-Waller factor (0.72) from our epitaxially grown highly crystalline and ordered 1D organic nanowire, which is attributed to a specific molecular configuration and a higher degree of molecular orientation as compared to that of the bulk thin film counterpart. Our results pave the way for organic 1D wires (with quasi-line spectra) for applications in lasing, nanosensors, and interconnects/functional units in next-generation miniaturized optoelectronics.
