Abstract This paper focuses on addressing the limitations of existing mechanical weeding methods for corn plants by introducing a spiral tendon-type precision weeding device specifically designed for corn fields. The study encompasses mechanical design and theoretical analysis to determine the overall structure, component parts, application scenarios, operation modes, and working principles of the device. The force applied to the spiral tendon weeding cutter head, a crucial working component of the device, is analyzed, along with its motion characteristics. This analysis allows for the calculation of the force required for the spiral tendon to penetrate the soil, as well as the determination of its trajectory and speed in the soil. The desired motion pattern of the weeding cutter head is considered in determining the contour shape of the inner cylinder track and its cooperation mode with the roller follower. Furthermore, the design and optimization of the circulation groove track are conducted to derive the key parameters of the track. A prototype is then constructed based on the proposed structural design and parameter optimization scheme. Soil bin tests are performed to evaluate the device’s performance. The optimal combinations of working parameters are determined as follows: a 70-mm depth of the weeding cutter head into the soil, a movement speed of 80 mm/s, and an output thrust of the electric actuator of 180 N. Under these conditions, the device achieves a weed removal rate exceeding 95% with a 3% wounding rate, demonstrating stable operational performance.

Pine wilt disease (PWD) is a highly destructive infectious disease that affects pine forests. Therefore, an accurate and effective method to monitor PWD infection is crucial. However, the majority of existing technologies can detect PWD only in the later stages. To curb the spread of PWD, it is imperative to develop an efficient method for early detection. We presented an early stage detection method for PWD utilizing UAV remote sensing, hyperspectral image reconstruction, and SVM classification. Initially, employ UAV to capture RGB remote sensing images of pine forests, followed by labeling infected plants using these images. Hyperspectral reconstruction networks, including HSCNN+, HRNet, MST++, and a self-built DW3D network, were employed to reconstruct the RGB images obtained from remote sensing. This resulted in hyperspectral images in the 400-700nm range, which were used as the dataset of early PWD detection in pine forests. Spectral reflectance curves of infected and uninfected plants were extracted. SVM algorithms with various kernel functions were then employed to detect early pine wilt disease. The results showed that using SVM for early detection of PWD infection based on reconstructed hyperspectral images achieved the highest accuracy, enabling the detection of PWD in its early stage. Among the experiments, MST++, DW3D, HRNet, and HSCNN+ were combined with Poly kernel SVM performed the best in terms of cross-validation accuracy, achieving 0.77, 0.74, 0.71, and 0.70, respectively. Regarding the reconstruction network parameters, the DW3D network had only 0.61M parameters, significantly lower than the MST++ network, which had the highest reconstruction accuracy with 1.6M parameters. The accuracy was improved by 27% compared to the detection results obtained using RGB images. This paper demonstrated that the hyperspectral reconstruction-poly SVM model could effectively detect the Early stage of PWD. In comparison to UAV hyperspectral remote sensing methods, the proposed method in this article offers a same precision, but a higher operational efficiency and cost-effectiveness. It also enables the detection of PWD at an earlier stage compared to RGB remote sensing, yielding more accurate and reliable results.

Abstract Developing fiber electronics presents a practical approach for establishing multi-node distributed networks within the human body, particularly concerning triboelectric fibers. However, realizing fiber electronics for monitoring micro-physiological activities remains challenging due to the intrinsic variability and subtle amplitude of physiological signals, which differ among individuals and scenarios. Here, we propose a technical approach based on a dynamic stability model of sheath-core fibers, integrating a micro-flexure-sensitive fiber enabled by nanofiber buckling and an ion conduction mechanism. This scheme enhances the accuracy of the signal transmission process, resulting in improved sensitivity (detectable signal at ultra-low curvature of 0.1 mm−1; flexure factor >21.8% within a bending range of 10°.) and robustness of fiber under micro flexure. In addition, we also developed a scalable manufacturing process and ensured compatibility with modern weaving techniques. By combining precise micro-curvature detection, micro-flexure-sensitive fibers unlock their full potential for various subtle physiological diagnoses, particularly in monitoring fiber upper limb muscle strength for rehabilitation and training.

Lychee, a key economic crop in southern China, has numerous similar-looking varieties. Classifying these can aid farmers in understanding each variety's growth and market demand, enhancing agricultural efficiency. However, existing classification techniques are subjective, complex, and costly. This paper proposes a lychee classification method using an improved ResNet-34 residual network for six common varieties. We enhance the CBAM attention mechanism by replacing the large receptive field in the SAM module with a smaller one. Attention mechanisms are added at key network stages, focusing on crucial image information. Transfer learning is employed to apply ImageNet-trained model weights to this task. Test set evaluations demonstrate that our improved ResNet-34 network surpasses the original, achieving a recognition accuracy of 95.8442%, a 5.58 percentage point improvement.

The field environment is complex and variable, and multiple factors constrain the effectiveness of UAV applications, and a single flow applications may result in over- or under-use of pesticides in plots with different requirements. Therefore, it is crucial to study a decision-making model of flow rate for plant protection UAVs under multi-factor interaction. In this paper, based on a large amount of experimental data, combined with Pearson correlation analysis and random forest variable importance score ranking, screening the features obtained from the experiment increases the correlation between input and output, making the output results more reliable. The model evaluation results showed that the GA-BP neural network model has a correlation coefficient of 0.99 between the true value, predicted value, and a coefficient of determination of 0.98, which is better than the general regression model. A validation test was conducted to test the effectiveness of the model for new data. The final result yields an error value within ±20% for the GA-BP model to predict the flow rate. At the same time, the BP neural network fluctuated more for some of the predicted values, which caused a 50% error in fitting results. It proves the feasibility of the BP neural network optimized based on feature screening and genetic algorithm in plant protection UAV flow rate decision-making, which can provide a reference basis and scientific guidance for precise variable spraying operation of plant protection UAVs.

The high-temporal-resolution monitoring of key management nodes in cotton management via agricultural remote sensing is vital for field cotton macro-statistics, particularly for predicting cotton production and obtaining comprehensive data. This study examines Shihezi, Xinjiang as a case study, utilizing Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 data from 2019 to 2021. Three machine learning models(RF, SVM, and CART) were employed to extract annual crop classification area rasters, monitor weekly cultivation progress, and monitor abandoned cropland during the cultivation period. The results demonstrate that the random forest model has produced satisfactory results in gridded extraction for cotton classification areas, achieving the producer's accuracy of the cotton category reached 98.5%, and the kappa coefficient is 0.947. Cotton cultivated in 2021 began is a week later than in 2020, yet exhibited a faster cultivate speed. The proportion of abandoned cotton fields in the study area rose in 2020 compared to 2019. The methodology presented in this study has a certain reference value for exploring the monitoring of continuous changes in crops over the years and macro-monitoring of important activities in the entire growth cycle.

Multispectral technology has a wide range of applications in agriculture. By obtaining spectral information during crop production, key information such as growth, pests and diseases, fertilizer and pesticide application can be determined quickly, accurately and efficiently. The scientific analysis based on Web of Science aims to understand the research hotspots and areas of interest in the field of agricultural multispectral technology. The publications related to agricultural multispectral research in agriculture between 2002 and 2021 were selected as the research objects. The softwares of CiteSpace, VOSviewer, and Microsoft Excel were used to provide a comprehensive review of agricultural multispectral research in terms of research areas, institutions, influential journals, and core authors. Results of the analysis show that the number of publications increased each year, with the largest increase in 2019. Remote sensing, imaging technology, environmental science, and ecology are the most popular research directions. The journal Remote Sensing is one of the most popular publishers, showing a high publishing potential in multispectral research in agriculture. The institution with the most research literature and citations is the USDA. In terms of the number of papers, Mtanga is the author with the most published articles in recent years. Through keyword co-citation analysis, it is determined that the main research areas of this topic focus on remote sensing, crop classification, plant phenotypes and other research areas. The literature cocitation analysis indicates that the main research directions concentrate in vegetation index, satellite remote sensing applications and machine learning modeling. There is still a lot of room for development of multi-spectrum technology. Further development can be carried out in the areas of multidevice synergy, spectral fusion, airborne equipment improvement, and realtime image processing technology, which will cooperate with each other to further play the role of multi-spectrum in agriculture and promote the development of agriculture. Breeding high-photosynthetic-efficiency wheat varieties is a crucial link in safeguarding national food security. Traditional identification methods necessitate laborious on-site observation and measurement, consuming time and effort. Leveraging unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) remote sensing technology to forecast photosynthetic indices opens up the potential for swiftly discerning high-photosynthetic-efficiency wheat varieties. The objective of this research is to develop a multi-stage predictive model encompassing nine photosynthetic indicators at the field scale for wheat breeding. These indices include soil and plant analyzer development (SPAD), leaf area index (LAI), net photosynthetic rate (Pn), transpiration rate (Tr), intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci), stomatal conductance (Gsw), photochemical quantum efficiency (PhiPS2), PSII reaction center excitation energy capture efficiency (Fv’/Fm’), and photochemical quenching coefficient (qP). The ultimate goal is to differentiate high-photosynthetic-efficiency wheat varieties through model-based predictions. This research gathered red, green, and blue spectrum (RGB) and multispectral (MS) images of eleven wheat varieties at the stages of jointing, heading, flowering, and filling. Vegetation indices (VIs) and texture features (TFs) were extracted as input variables. Three machine learning regression models (Support Vector Machine Regression (SVR), Random Forest (RF), and BP Neural Network (BPNN)) were employed to construct predictive models for nine photosynthetic indices across multiple growth stages. Furthermore, the research conducted principal component analysis (PCA) and membership function analysis on the predicted values of the optimal models for each indicator, established a comprehensive evaluation index for high photosynthetic efficiency, and employed cluster analysis to screen the test materials. The cluster analysis categorized the eleven varieties into three groups, with SH06144 and Yannong 188 demonstrating higher photosynthetic efficiency. The moderately efficient group comprises Liangxing 19, SH05604, SH06085, Chaomai 777, SH05292, Jimai 22, and Guigu 820, totaling seven varieties. Xinmai 916 and Jinong 114 fall into the category of lower photosynthetic efficiency, aligning closely with the results of the clustering analysis based on actual measurements. The findings suggest that employing UAV-based multi-source remote sensing technology to identify wheat varieties with high photosynthetic efficiency is feasible. The study results provide a theoretical basis for winter wheat phenotypic monitoring at the breeding field scale using UAV-based multi-source remote sensing, offering valuable insights for the advancement of smart breeding practices for high-photosynthetic-efficiency wheat varieties.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of structural changes in variable fertilizer application devices on the distribution of particle deposition in UAVs. With the rapid development of drone technology, particularly in particulate spreading, drones have demonstrated significant potential due to their efficiency and precision. This paper evaluates the impact of different variable adjustment modes of the device on particulate deposition distribution through drone spreading experiments and particulate deposition data analysis. In this study, device structure change is the main variable factor, and flight altitude, flight speed and ambient wind speed are single quantitative factors. Experiments were conducted by varying the structure of the device to test the detailed deposition distribution of the device under group a, b, and c structures. Experimental results indicate that by choosing different variable combinations, the spreading device can achieve various fertilizer deposition states to meet regional needs. Among all 27 variable groups, the fertilizer particle deposition data for group b1b2b3 is relatively uniform, with three-quarters of particulate deposition values being 3 g/m2 and the maximum value being 4 g/m2. However, even with a relatively uniform distribution of fertilizer particles, the coefficient of variation for group b1b2b3 remains high (36.5%), with a range of 4.5% to 41%. Under different group adjustments, the particle distribution shows the smallest variability range in group b1b2b3, with a range of 15.71–26.44% and a variability difference of 10.73%. The particle distribution shows the largest variability range in group a1a2b3, with a range of 0.78–35.06% and a variability difference of 34.28%. These research conclusions provide important guidance for the study and practice of drone spreading systems.

In order to accurately obtain the seedling emergence rate of breeding sunflower and to assess the quality of sowing as well as the merit of sunflower varieties, a method of extracting the sunflower seedling emergence rate using multi-source remote sensing information from unmanned aerial vehicles is proposed. Visible and multispectral images of sunflower seedlings were acquired using a UAV. The thresholding method was used to segment the excess green image of the visible image into vegetation and non-vegetation, to obtain the center point of the vegetation to generate a buffer, and to mask the visible image to achieve weed removal. The components of color models such as the hue–saturation value (HSV), green-relative color space (YCbCr), cyan-magenta-yellow-black (CMYK), and CIELAB color space (L*A*B) models were compared and analyzed. The A component of the L*A*B model was preferred for the optimization of K-means clustering to segment sunflower seedlings and mulch using the genetic algorithm, and the segmentation accuracy was improved by 4.6% compared with the K-means clustering algorithm. All told, 10 geometric features of sunflower seedlings were extracted using segmented images, and 10 vegetation indices and 48 texture features of sunflower seedlings were calculated based on multispectral images. The Pearson’s correlation coefficient method was used to filter the three types of features, and the geometric feature set, the vegetation index set, the texture feature set, and the preferred feature set were constructed. The construction of a sunflower plant number estimation model using the crested porcupine optimizer–support vector machine is proposed and compared with the sunflower plant number estimation models constructed based on decision tree regression, BP neural network, and support vector machine regression. The results show that the accuracy of the model based on the preferred feature set is higher than that of the other three feature sets, indicating that feature screening can improve the accuracy and stability of models; assessed using the CPO-SVR model, the accuracy of the preferred feature set was the highest, with an R² of 0.94, an RMSE of 5.16, and an MAE of 3.03. Compared to the SVR model, the value of the R2 is improved by 3.3%, the RMSE decreased by 18.3%, and the MAE decreased by 18.1%. The results of the study can be cost-effective, accurate, and reliable in terms of obtaining the seedling emergence rate of sunflower field breeding.

The accurate estimation of soil plant analytical development (SPAD) values in cotton under various intercropping patterns with soybean is crucial for monitoring cotton growth and determining a suitable intercropping pattern. In this study, we utilized an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) to capture visible (RGB) and multispectral (MS) data of cotton at the bud stage, early flowering stage, and full flowering stage in a cotton–soybean intercropping pattern in the Yellow River Delta region of China, and we used SPAD502 Plus and tapeline to collect SPAD and cotton plant height (CH) data of the cotton canopy, respectively. We analyzed the differences in cotton SPAD and CH under different intercropping ratio patterns. It was conducted using Pearson correlation analysis between the RGB features, MS features, and cotton SPAD, then the recursive feature elimination (RFE) method was employed to select image features. Seven feature sets including MS features (five vegetation indices + five texture features), RGB features (five vegetation indices + cotton cover), and CH, as well as combinations of these three types of features with each other, were established. Voting regression (VR) ensemble learning was proposed for estimating cotton SPAD and compared with the performances of three models: random forest regression (RFR), gradient boosting regression (GBR), and support vector regression (SVR). The optimal model was then used to estimate and visualize cotton SPAD under different intercropping patterns. The results were as follows: (1) There was little difference in the mean value of SPAD or CH under different intercropping patterns; a significant positive correlation existed between CH and SPAD throughout the entire growth period. (2) All VR models were optimal when each of the seven feature sets were used as input. When the features set was MS + RGB, the determination coefficient (R2) of the validation set of the VR model was 0.902, the root mean square error (RMSE) was 1.599, and the relative prediction deviation (RPD) was 3.24. (3) When the features set was CH + MS + RGB, the accuracy of the VR model was further improved, compared with the feature set MS + RGB, the R2 and RPD were increased by 1.55% and 8.95%, respectively, and the RMSE was decreased by 7.38%. (4) In the intercropping of cotton and soybean, cotton growing under 4:6 planting patterns was better. The results can provide a reference for the selection of intercropping patterns and the estimation of cotton SPAD.

The Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) sprayer has the advantages of high work efficiency, simple operation, and high safety factor, and has broad application prospects UAV sprayer are widely used in the agricultural field, and the application of UAV sprayer spraying technology in agriculture has provided convenience and increased profits for farmers, and has also become a research hotspot in the field of agriculture. In recent years, although research has been conducted on the feasibility and application effects of UAV sprayer spraying crown shaped plants, there have been no experiments or studies in the field of garden plants. This experiment conducted a droplet deposition experiment of UAV sprayer spraying garden plants, exploring the droplet deposition effect of UAV sprayer in the field of garden plants, and conducting experiments on the influence of spray volume and nozzle type on droplet deposition. The experimental results showed that the canopy performance of small and medium-sized garden plants was better at a flight altitude of 1.5m, a spray volume of 180L/hm2, and a flight speed of 2m/s. Reducing flight altitude, increasing spray volume, and reducing flight speed can improve the distribution of droplets in the canopy. This experiment lays the foundation for the application of UAV sprayer for the prevention and control of pests and diseases in garden plants, as well as for the application of growth regulators, and provides a basis for further innovative research in the field of garden plant application technology.

In order to improve the accuracy of multispectral image inversion of soil and plant analytical development (SPAD) of the cotton canopy, image segmentation methods were utilized to remove the background interference, such as soil and shadow in UAV multispectral images. UAV multispectral images of cotton bud stage canopies at three different heights (30 m, 50 m, and 80 m) were acquired. Four methods, namely vegetation index thresholding (VIT), supervised classification by support vector machine (SVM), spectral mixture analysis (SMA), and multiple endmember spectral mixture analysis (MESMA), were used to segment cotton, soil, and shadows in the multispectral images of cotton. The segmented UAV multispectral images were used to extract the spectral information of the cotton canopy, and eight vegetation indices were calculated to construct the dataset. Partial least squares regression (PLSR), Random forest (FR), and support vector regression (SVR) algorithms were used to construct the inversion model of cotton SPAD. This study analyzed the effects of different image segmentation methods on the extraction accuracy of spectral information and the accuracy of SPAD modeling in the cotton canopy. The results showed that (1) The accuracy of spectral information extraction can be improved by removing background interference such as soil and shadows using four image segmentation methods. The correlation between the vegetation indices calculated from MESMA segmented images and the SPAD of the cotton canopy was improved the most; (2) At three different flight altitudes, the vegetation indices calculated by the MESMA segmentation method were used as the input variable, and the SVR model had the best accuracy in the inversion of cotton SPAD, with R2 of 0.810, 0.778, and 0.697, respectively; (3) At a flight altitude of 80 m, the R2 of the SVR models constructed using vegetation indices calculated from images segmented by VIT, SVM, SMA, and MESMA methods were improved by 2.2%, 5.8%, 13.7%, and 17.9%, respectively, compared to the original images. Therefore, the MESMA mixed pixel decomposition method can effectively remove soil and shadows in multispectral images, especially to provide a reference for improving the inversion accuracy of crop physiological parameters in low-resolution images with more mixed pixels.

Path planning is the core problem of orchard fertilization robots during their operation. The traditional full-coverage job path planning algorithm has problems, such as being not smooth enough and having a large curvature fluctuation, that lead to unsteady running and low working efficiency of robot trajectory tracking. To solve the above problems, an improved A* path planning algorithm based on a multi-constraint Bessel curve is proposed. First, by improving the traditional A* algorithm, the orchard operation path can be fully covered by adding guide points. Second, according to the differential vehicle kinematics model of the orchard fertilization robot, the robot kinematics constraint is combined with a Bessel curve to smooth the turning path of the A* algorithm, and the global path meeting the driving requirements of the orchard fertilization robot is generated by comprehensively considering multiple constraints such as the minimum turning radius and continuous curvature. Finally, the pure tracking algorithm is used to carry out tracking experiments to verify the robot’s driving accuracy. The simulation and experimental results show that the maximum curvature of the planned trajectory is 0.67, which meets the autonomous operation requirements of the orchard fertilization robot. When tracking the linear path in the fertilization area, the average transverse deviation is 0.0157 m, and the maximum transverse deviation is 0.0457 m. When tracking the U-turn path, the average absolute transverse deviation is 0.1081 m, and the maximum transverse deviation is 0.1768 m, which meets the autonomous operation requirements of orchard fertilization robots.

Obtaining consistent multi-view images of litchis is crucial for various litchi-related studies, such as data augmentation and 3D reconstruction. This paper proposes a two-stage model that integrates the Mask2Former semantic segmentation network with the Wonder3D multi-view generation network. This integration aims to accurately segment and extract litchis from complex backgrounds and generate consistent multi-view images of previously unseen litchis. In the first stage, the Mask2Former model is utilized to predict litchi masks, enabling the extraction of litchis from complex backgrounds. To further enhance the accuracy of litchi branch extraction, we propose a novel method that combines the predicted masks with morphological operations and the HSV color space. This approach ensures accurate extraction of litchi branches even when the semantic segmentation model’s prediction accuracy is not high. In the second stage, the segmented and extracted litchi images are passed as input into the Wonder3D network to generate multi-view of the litchis. After comparing different semantic segmentation and multi-view synthesis networks, the Mask2Former and Wonder3D networks demonstrated the best performance. The Mask2Former network achieved a mean Intersection over Union (mIoU) of 79.79% and a mean pixel accuracy (mPA) of 85.82%. The Wonder3D network achieved a peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) of 18.89 dB, a structural similarity index (SSIM) of 0.8199, and a learned perceptual image patch similarity (LPIPS) of 0.114. Combining the Mask2Former model with the Wonder3D network resulted in an increase in PSNR and SSIM scores by 0.21 dB and 0.0121, respectively, and a decrease in LPIPS by 0.064 compared to using the Wonder3D model alone. Therefore, the proposed two-stage model effectively achieves automatic extraction and multi-view generation of litchis with high accuracy.

The utilization of the large pretrained model (LPM) based on Transformer has emerged as a prominent research area in various fields, owing to its robust computational capabilities. However, there remains a need to explore how LPM can be effectively employed in the agricultural domain. This research aims to enhance agricultural pest detection with limited samples by leveraging the strong generalization performance of the LPM. Through extensive research, this study has revealed that in tasks involving the counting of a small number of samples, complex agricultural scenes with varying lighting and environmental conditions can significantly impede the accuracy of pest counting. Consequently, accurately counting pests in diverse lighting and environmental conditions with limited samples remains a challenging task. To address this issue, the present research suggests a unique approach that integrates the outstanding performance of the segment anything model in class-agnostic segmentation with the counting network. Moreover, by intelligently utilizing a straightforward TopK matching algorithm to propagate accurate labels, and drawing inspiration from the GPT model while incorporating the forgetting mechanism, a more robust model can be achieved. This approach transforms the problem of matching instances in different scenarios into a problem of matching similar instances within a single image. Experimental results demonstrate that our method enhances the accuracy of the FamNet baseline model by 69.17% on this dataset. Exploring the synergy between large models and agricultural scenes warrants further discussion and consideration.

During continuous spraying operations, the liquid in the pesticide tank gradually decreases, and the flight speed changes as the route is altered. To maintain stable flight, the rotor speed of a multi-rotor unmanned aerial spraying system (UASS) constantly adjusts. To explore the variation law of rotor speed in a multi-rotor UASS under objective operation attributes, based on indoor and outdoor experimental data, this paper constructs a mathematical model of the relationship between rotor speed and thrust. The model fitting parameter (R2) is equal to 0.9996. Through the neural network, the rotor speed prediction model is constructed with the real-time flight speed and the payload of the pesticide tank as the input. The overall correlation coefficient (R2) of the model training set is 0.728, and the correlation coefficients (R2) of the verification set and the test set are 0.719 and 0.726, respectively. Finally, the rotor speed is matched with the load of the whole UASS through thrust conversion. It is known that the single-axis load capacity under full-load state only reaches about 50% of its maximum load capacity, and the load increase is more than 75.83% compared with the no-load state. This study provides a theoretical and methodological reference for accurately predicting the performance characterization results of a power system during actual operation and investigating the dynamic feedback mechanism of a UASS during continuous operation.

Cadmium stress is a major threat to plant growth and survival worldwide. The current study aims to green synthesis, characterization, and application of zinc-oxide nanoparticles to alleviate cadmium stress in maize (Zea mays L.) plants. In this experiment, two cadmium levels (0, 0.6 mM) were applied to check the impact on plant growth attributes, chlorophyll contents, and concentration of various primary metabolites and antioxidants under exogenous treatment of zinc-oxide nanoparticles (25 and 50 mg L-1) in maize seedlings. Tissue sampling was made 21 days after the zinc-oxide nanoparticles application. Our results showed that applying cadmium significantly reduced total chlorophyll and carotenoid contents by 52.87% and 23.31% compared to non-stress. In comparison, it was increased by 53.23%, 68.49% and 9.73%, 37.53% with zinc-oxide nanoparticles 25, 50 mg L-1 application compared with cadmium stress conditions, respectively. At the same time, proline, superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, catalase, and ascorbate peroxidase contents were enhanced in plants treated with cadmium compared to non-treated plants with no foliar application, while it was increased by 12.99 and 23.09%, 23.52 and 35.12%, 27.53 and 36.43%, 14.19 and 24.46%, 14.64 and 37.68% by applying 25 and 50 mg L-1 of zinc-oxide nanoparticles dosages, respectively. In addition, cadmium toxicity also enhanced stress indicators such as malondialdehyde, hydrogen peroxide, and non-enzymatic antioxidants in plant leaves. Overall, the exogenous application of zinc-oxide nanoparticles (25 and 50 mg L-1) significantly alleviated cadmium toxicity in maize. It provides the first evidence that zinc-oxide nanoparticles 25 ~ 50 mg L-1 can be a candidate agricultural strategy for mitigating cadmium stress in cadmium-polluted soils for safe agriculture practice.

An efficient and accurate estimation of wheat growth and yield is important for wheat assessment and field management. To improve the accuracy and stability of wheat growth and yield estimation, an estimation method based on a genetic algorithm-improved support vector regression (GA-SVR) algorithm was proposed in this study. The correlation analysis between vegetation indices calculated from spectral data and wheat growth phenotypes and yields was performed to obtain the optimal combination of vegetation indices with high correlation and good estimation performance. At the same time, the optimal model for wheat growth monitoring was screened and constructed in experiments with 12 wheat varieties and 3 gradient nitrogen fertilizer application levels. Then, the yield estimation model was established and its applicability was verified under different nitrogen fertilizer application levels. The results showed that the constructed models for the leaf area index, plant height, and yield estimation performed well, with coefficients of determination of 0.82, 0.71, and 0.70, and root mean square errors of 0.09, 2.7, and 68.5, respectively. This study provided an effective UAV remote sensing technique for monitoring wheat growth status and estimating yield. This study provides an effective unmanned aerial remote sensing technique for monitoring wheat growth and estimating yield, and provides technical support for wheat yield assessment and field management.

This study introduces a novel methodology for the dynamic extraction of information on cotton growth in terms of height utilizing the DJI Zenmuse L1 LiDAR sensor mounted onto a DJI Matrice 300 RTK Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV), aimed at enhancing the precision and efficiency of growth monitoring within the realm of precision agriculture. Employing the Progressive TIN Densification (PTD) and Cloth Simulation Filter (CSF) algorithms, combined with Kriging interpolation, we generated Canopy Height Models (CHMs) to extract the cotton heights at two key agricultural sites: Zengcheng and Tumxuk. Our analysis reveals that the PTD algorithm significantly outperforms the CSF method in terms of accuracy, with its R2 values indicating a superior model fit for height extraction across different growth stages (Zengcheng: 0.71, Tumxuk: 0.82). Through meticulous data processing and cluster analysis, this study not only identifies the most effective algorithm for accurate height extraction but also provides detailed insights into the dynamic growth patterns of cotton varieties across different geographical regions. The findings highlight the critical role of UAV remote sensing in enabling large-scale, high-precision monitoring of crop growth, which is essential for the optimization of agricultural practices such as precision fertilization and irrigation. Furthermore, the study demonstrates the potential of UAV technology to select superior cotton varieties by analyzing their growth dynamics, offering valuable guidance for cotton breeding and cultivation.

Utilizing agricultural UAVs for pesticide and insecticide spraying is an effective measure for plant protection. However, achieving effective coverage on the back side of target is often challenging. To address this issue, this study combined a contact-charging spraying system with a UAV to develop an electrostatic plant protection UAV system. Upon activating the electrostatic component, strong electrostatic effects were observed at the nozzle, altering the distribution of the liquid flow; the distribution within the liquid flow became more homogeneous, while the edge regions experienced electrostatic repulsion, leading to changes in droplet size and an increase in droplet density. In the central area, droplet size reduced from 159 μm to 135 μm, while in the edge area, it changed from no value to 120 μm. During field tests using the UAV, the results showed an increase of 1.0 m in effective spray width (at a flight height of 4.0 m), indicating that the charges and propellor wind field contributed to the diffusion of droplets towards the edges. Additionally, the droplet density increased by an average of 19.7 droplets/cm2, and the overall deposition increased by 0.12 μL/cm2, resulting in an approximate three-fold increase compared to conventional spray, which aids in insect control and reduces pesticide usage.

The immature winter flush affects the flower bud differentiation, flowering and fruit of litchi, and then seriously reduces the yield of litchi. However, at present, the area estimation and growth process monitoring of winter flush still rely on manual judgment and operation, so it is impossible to accurately and effectively control flush. An efficient approach is proposed in this paper to detect the litchi flush from the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) remoting images of litchi crown and track winter flush growth of litchi tree. The proposed model is constructed based on U-Net network, of which the encoder is replaced by MobeilNetV3 backbone network to reduce model parameters and computation. Moreover, Convolutional Block Attention Module (CBAM) is integrated and convolutional layer is added to enhance feature extraction ability, and transfer learning is adopted to solve the problem of small data volume. As a result, the Mean Pixel Accuracy (MPA) and Mean Intersection over Union (MIoU) on the flush dataset are increased from 90.95% and 83.3% to 93.4% and 85%, respectively. Moreover, the size of the proposed model is reduced by 15% from the original model. In addition, the segmentation model is applied to the tracking of winter flushes on the canopy of litchi trees and investigating the two growth processes of litchi flushes (late-autumn shoots growing into flushes and flushes growing into mature leaves). It is revealed that the growth processes of flushes in a particular branch region can be quantitatively analysed based on the UAV images and the proposed semantic segmentation model. The results also demonstrate that a sudden drop in temperature can promote the rapid transformation of late-autumn shoots into flushes. The method proposed in this paper provide a new technique for accurate management of litchi flush and a possibility for the area estimation and growth process monitoring of winter flush, which can assist in the control operation and yield prediction of litchi orchards.

Plant protection drone spraying technology is widely used to prevent and control crop diseases and pests due to its advantages of being unaffected by crop growth patterns and terrain restrictions, high operational efficiency, and low labor requirements. The operational parameters of plant protection drones significantly impact the distribution of spray droplets, thereby affecting pesticide utilization. In this study, a field experiment was conducted to determine the working modes of two representative plant protection drones and an electric backpack sprayer as a control to explore the characteristics of droplet deposition with different spray volumes in the citrus canopy. The results showed that the spraying volume significantly affected the number of droplets and the spray coverage. The number of droplets and the spray coverage area on the leaf surface were significantly increased by increasing the spray volume from 60 L/ha to 120 L/ha in plant protection drones. Particularly for the DJI T30, the mid-lower canopy showed a spray coverage increase of 52.5%. The droplet density demonstrated the most significant variations in the lower inner canopy, ranging from 18.7 droplets/cm2 to 41.7 droplets/cm2 by XAG V40. From the deposition distribution on fruit trees, the plant protection drones exhibit good penetration ability, as the droplets can achieve a relatively even distribution in different canopy layers of citrus trees. The droplet distribution uniformity inside the canopy is similar for XAG V40 and DJI T30, with a variation coefficient of approximately 50%-100%. Compared to the plant protection drones, the knapsack electric sprayer is suitable for pest and disease control in the mid-lower canopy, but they face challenges of insufficient deposition capability in the upper canopy and overall poor spray uniformity. The distribution of deposition determined in this study provides data support for the selection of spraying agents for fruit trees by plant protection drones and for the control of different pests and diseases.

To ensure that a variable-rate spray (VRS) system can perform unmanned aerial spray in accordance with a prescription map at different flight speeds, we examine in this paper such significant factors as the response time of the VRS system and the pressure fluctuation of the nozzle during the variable-rate spraying process. The VRS system uses a lag compensation algorithm (LCA) to counteract the droplet deposition position lag caused by the system response delay. In addition, pulse width modulated (PWM) solenoid valves are used for controlling the flowrates of the nozzles on the variable-rate spray system, and a mathematical model was constructed for the spray rate (L min-1) and the relative proportion of time (duty cycle) each solenoid valve is open. The pressure drop and solenoid valve response time at different duty cycles (50%~90%) were measured by indoor experiments. Meanwhile, the lag distance (LD), spray accuracy, and droplet deposition characteristics of the VRS system were tested by conducting outdoor experiments at different flight speeds (4m s-1, 5m s-1, 6m s-1). The results show that LCA can effectively reduce the lag distance. The lag distance (LD) values of the VRS system with LCA ranged from -0.27 to 0.78m with an average value of 0.32m, while without LCA, the LD values increased to 3.5~4.3m with an average value of 3.87m. The overall spray position accuracy was in the range of 91.56%~97.32%. Furthermore, the spray coverage and deposition density, determined using water sensitive paper (WSP), were used to evaluate the spray application performance taking into account the spray volume applied. The VRS system can provide the most suitable spray volumes for insecticide and fungicide plant protection products. Based on a prescription map, the optimized VRS system can achieve accurate pesticide spraying as well as desirable spray coverage and deposition density.

The precise identification of corn and weeds plays an important role in precise spraying. This paper proposed a lightweight model based on the improved yolov5s and built a precision spraying robot. Firstly, we used a data augmentation method based on category balance and agronomic characteristics to solve the data imbalance problem. Then, compared with yolov5s, yolov5l, yolov5m, and yolov5x, we found that yolov5s has both real-time and accuracy and is easier to deploy the model on edge devices. Through the feature map visualization experiment, we found that the feature extraction network can’t pay close attention to the important feature of the target and suppress the feature of the noise. Therefore, we added the attention mechanism. In order to improve the real-time performance of the model, we designed the C3-Ghost-bottleneck module. Finally, we built a precision spraying robot. Compared with the original model, the value of map@0.5 is increased by 3.2%, the model file is reduced by 3.6 MB, the AP value for corn is increased from 93.2% to 96.3%, and the AP value for weeds is increased from 85.6% to 88.9%. Finally, the precision spraying experiment of weeds was carried out. The recognition accuracy of weeds is 83%, the probability of the spraying robot correctly identifying weeds and accurately spraying is 81%, and the detection speed is 30ms/f. The experimental results verify the feasibility of precision spraying weeding and the effectiveness of the improved model, which can provide a reference for the engineering application of precision weeding.

Abstract Background The technology of cotton defoliation is essential for mechanical cotton harvesting. Agricultural unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) spraying has the advantages of low cost, high efficiency and no mechanical damage to cotton and has been favored and widely used by cotton planters in China. However, there are also some problems of low cotton defoliation rates and high impurity rates caused by unclear spraying amounts of cotton defoliants. The chemical rate recommendation and application should be based upon crop canopy volume rather than on land area. Plant height and leaf area index (LAI) is directly connected to plant canopy structure. Accurate dynamic monitoring of plant height and LAI provides important information for evaluating cotton growth and production. The traditional method to obtain plant height and LAI was s a time-consuming and labor-intensive task. It is very difficult and unrealistic to use the traditional measurement method to make the temporal and spatial variation map of plant height and LAI of large cotton fields. With the application of UAV in agriculture, remote sensing by UAV is currently regarded as an effective technology for monitoring and estimating plant height and LAI. Results In this paper, we used UAV RGB photos to build dense point clouds to estimate cotton plant height and LAI following cotton defoliant spraying. The results indicate that the proposed method was able to dynamically monitor the changes in the LAI of cotton at different times. At 3 days after defoliant spraying, the correlation between the plant height estimated based on the constructed dense point cloud and the measured plant height was strong, with $$R^2$$ R 2 and RMSE values of 0.962 and 0.913, respectively. At 10 days after defoliant spraying, the correlation became weaker over time, with $$R^2$$ R 2 and RMSE values of 0.018 and 0.027, respectively. Comparing the actual manually measured LAI with the estimated LAI based on the dense point cloud, the $$R^2$$ R 2 and RMSE were 0.872 and 0.814 and 0.132 and 0.173 at 3 and 10 days after defoliant spraying, respectively. Conclusions Dense point cloud construction based on UAV remote sensing is a potential alternative to plant height and LAI estimation. The accuracy of LAI estimation can be improved by considering both plant height and planting density.

IntroductionPinus elliottii × P. caribaea is one of the major tree species in commercial forest bases in developed countries. However, in the process of sapling cultivation, nutrients cannot be accurately detected and supplied to individual saplings, resulting in reduced yield and quality.MethodsIn this paper, visible-near-infrared (Vis-NIR) hyperspectral imaging (HSI) combined with ensemble learning (EL) was used to solve this problem. The content and distribution of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) in the canopy needles of Pinus elliottii × P. caribaea saplings were obtained through HSI data analysis, and the nutritional needs of individual plants were reflected to provide a basis for nutritional supply decisions. The saplings were treated with deficient, sufficient, and excessive N, P, and K single-element fertilizers. After collecting the Vis-NIR hyperspectral images of these saplings, a variety of pre-processing, feature selection, and ensemble learning algorithms were used to establish predictive models. The R2 and RMSE were used to evaluate the performance of the prediction models.ResultsThe results showed that the multiple scattering correction-competitive adaptive reweighted sampling-Stacking (MSC-CARS-Stacking) model had the best results among the three nutrient elements prediction models (Rp2-N = 0.833, RMSEP = 0.380; Rp2-P = 0.622, RMSEP = 0.101; Rp2-K = 0.697, RMSEP = 0.523). When studying the sensitive bands of N, P, and K, we found that the common characteristic wavelengths were 675.3 and 923.9 nm, while the non-common characteristic wavelengths were located at 550 nm (green peak), 680 nm (red valley), and 960 nm (water peak). In studying the generalization ability of the model, only the nitrogen group data were used to train the MSC-CARS-Stacking model for nitrogen prediction, which was then used to predict the nitrogen content in the phosphorus and potassium groups, obtaining good results (Rc2-N = 0.841, Rp2-P = 0.814, Rp2-K = 0.801). It showed a strong generalization ability for the prediction of nitrogen, and similarly, phosphorus and potassium.DiscussionIn conclusion, this study verifies that the Vis-NIR HSI combined with EL is indeed a reliable and stable method to predict the contents of N, P, and K in the needles of Pinus elliottii × P. caribaea sapling canopy.

Tryptophan, as a signal molecule, mediates many biotic and environmental stress-induced physiological responses in plants. Therefore, an experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of tryptophan seed treatment in response to cadmium stress (0, 0.15, and 0.25 mM) in sunflower plants. Different growth and biochemical parameters were determined to compare the efficiency of the treatment agent. The results showed that cadmium stress reduced the growth attributes, including root and shoot length, dry and fresh weight, rate of seed germination, and the number of leaves. Cadmium stress also significantly reduced the contents of chlorophyll a, b, and total chlorophyll, carotenoid contents, phenolics, flavonoids, anthocyanin, and ascorbic acid. Whereas cadmium stress (0.15 and 0.25 mM) enhanced the concentrations of malondialdehyde (45.24% and 53.06%), hydrogen peroxide (−11.07% and 5.86%), and soluble sugars (28.05% and 50.34%) compared to the control. Tryptophan treatment decreased the effect of Cd stress by minimizing lipid peroxidation. Seed treatment with tryptophan under cadmium stress improved the root (19.40%) and shoot length (38.14%), root (41.90%) and shoot fresh weight (13.58%), seed germination ability (13.79%), average leaf area (24.07%), chlorophyll b (51.35%), total chlorophyll (20.04%), carotenoids (43.37%), total phenolic (1.47%), flavonoids (19.02%), anthocyanin (26.57%), ascorbic acid (4%), and total soluble proteins (12.32%) compared with control conditions. Overall, the tryptophan seed treatment showed positive effects on sunflower plants’ growth and stress tolerance, highlighting its potential as a sustainable approach to improve crop performance.

The agriculture sector plays a very important role in the increasing population, year by year, to fulfill requirements and contributes significantly to the economy of the country. One of the main challenges in agriculture is the prevention and early detection of pest attack on crops. Farmers spend a significant amount of time and money in detecting pests and diseases, often by looking at plant leaves and analyzing the presence of diseases and pests. Late detection of pest attacks and improper use of pesticide application can cause damage to plants and compromise food quality. This problem can be solved through artificial intelligence, machine learning, and accurate image classification systems. In recent years, machine learning has made improvements in image recognition and classification. Hence, in this research article, we used convolutional neural network (CNN)-based models, such as the Cov2D library and VGG-16, to identify pest attacks. Our experiments involved a personal dataset consisting of 7000 images of pest-attacked leaf samples of different positions on maize plants, categorized into two classes. The Google Colab environment was used for experimentation and implementation, specially designed for cloud computing and machine learning.

The LAI (leaf area index) is an important parameter describing the canopy structure of citrus trees and characterizing plant photosynthesis, as well as providing an important basis for selecting parameters for orchard plant protection operations. By fusing LiDAR data with multispectral data, it can make up for the lack of rich spatial features of multispectral data, thus obtaining higher LAI inversion accuracy. This study proposed a multiscale LAI inversion method for citrus orchard based on the fusion of point cloud data and multispectral data. By comparing various machine learning algorithms, the mapping relationship between the characteristic parameters in multispectral data and point cloud data and citrus LAI was established, and we established the inversion model based on this, by removing redundant features through redundancy analysis. The experiment results showed that the BP neural network performs the best at both the community scale and the individual scale. After removing redundant features, the R2, RMSE, and MAE of the BP neural network at the community scale and individual scale were 0.896, 0.112, 0.086, and 0.794, 0.408, 0.328, respectively. By adding the three-dimensional gap fraction feature to the two-dimensional vegetation index features, the R2 at community scale and individual scale increased by 4.43% and 7.29%, respectively. The conclusion of this study suggests that the fusion of point cloud and multispectral data exhibits superior accuracy in multiscale citrus LAI inversion compared to relying solely on a single data source. This study proposes a fast and efficient multiscale LAI inversion method for citrus, which provides a new idea for the orchard precise management and the precision of plant protection operation.

Plant height is a crucial phenotypic trait that plays a vital role in predicting cotton growth and yield, as well as in estimating biomass in cotton plants. The accurate estimation of canopy height from single-flight LiDAR data remains a formidable challenge in current high-density cotton cultivation patterns, where dense foliage obstructs the collection of bare soil terrain, particularly after flowering. The existing LiDAR-based methods for cotton height estimation suffer from significant errors. In this study, a new method is proposed to compensate for the canopy height estimation by using the canopy laser interception rate. The ground points are extracted by the ground filtering algorithm, and the interception rate of the laser per unit volume of the canopy is calculated to represent the canopy density and compensate for the cotton height estimation. The appropriate segmented height compensation function is determined by grouping and step-by-step analysis of the canopy laser interception rate. Verified by 440 groups of height data measured manually in the field, the results show that the canopy laser interception compensation mechanism is of great help in improving the estimation accuracy of LiDAR. R2 and RMSE reach 0.90 and 6.18 cm, respectively. Compared with the estimation method before compensation, R2 is increased by 13.92%, and RMSE is reduced by 49.31%. And when the canopy interception rate is greater than 99%, the compensation effect is more obvious, and the RMSE is reduced by 62.49%. This research result can significantly improve the height estimation accuracy of UAV-borne for high planting density cotton areas, which is helpful to improve the efficiency of cotton quality breeding and match genomics data.

Trichogramma-based biological control technology is of great significance to the development of green agriculture. Agricultural drones have the advantages of low-altitude and high-speed operations and have been well applied and widely recognized in the field of Trichogramma delivery. Drone-based Trichogramma ball delivery not only utilizes the efficiency and flexibility of drones but also enables remote precision control. However, existing delivery devices are relatively rudimentary, leading to reliability and precision issues. It is necessary to develop an efficient and accurate drone delivery device to improve the effect of drone delivery of Trichogramma. In this study, a device consisting of a rotary storage mechanism and a rotating hammer-type delivery mechanism was developed. The delivery port of the delivery device should be set in the airflow outlet area 50 cm below the drone’s body. The storage mechanism is equipped with eight storage tube units with a diameter of Φ38 mm, capable of delivering a total of 56 balls in a single mission. The reliable delivery speed ranges from 2 to 6 m/s, with the remote position of the lever serving as the optimal starting position. The release test results showed that 3 m/s flight speed and 4 m/s delivery speed resulted in a small coefficient of variation for the delivery deviation (29%), making it the best operating parameter set. The performance of the developed UAV-based Trichogramma delivery device meets the requirements of field delivery when the appropriate operating parameters are optimized. This study provides reference for further optimization and design of this delivery device prototype.

Data processing of low-altitude remote sensing visible images from UAVs is one of the hot research topics in precision agriculture aviation. In order to solve the problems of large model size with slow detection speed that lead to the inability to process images in real time, this paper proposes a lightweight target detector CURI-YOLOv7 based on YOLOv7tiny which is suitable for individual citrus tree detection from UAV remote sensing imagery. This paper augmented the dataset with morphological changes and Mosica with Mixup. A backbone based on depthwise separable convolution and the MobileOne-block module was designed to replace the backbone of YOLOv7tiny. SPPF (spatial pyramid pooling fast) was used to replace the original spatial pyramid pooling structure. Additionally, we redesigned the neck by adding GSConv and depth-separable convolution and deleted its input layer from the backbone with a size of (80, 80) and its output layer from the head with a size of (80, 80). A new ELAN structure was designed, and the redundant convolutional layers were deleted. The experimental results show that the GFLOPs = 1.976, the parameters = 1.018 M, the weights = 3.98 MB, and the mAP = 90.34% for CURI-YOLOv7 in the UAV remote sensing imagery of the citrus trees dataset. The detection speed of a single image is 128.83 on computer and 27.01 on embedded devices. Therefore, the CURI-YOLOv7 model can basically achieve the function of individual tree detection in UAV remote sensing imagery on embedded devices. This forms a foundation for the subsequent UAV real-time identification of the citrus tree with its geographic coordinates positioning, which is conducive to the study of precise agricultural management of citrus orchards.

The automated harvesting of clustered fruits relies on fast and accurate visual perception. However, the obscured stem diameters via leaf occlusion lack any discernible texture patterns. Nevertheless, our human visual system can often judge the position of harvesting points. Inspired by this, the aim of this paper is to address this issue by leveraging the morphology and the distribution of fruit contour gradient directions. Firstly, this paper proposes the calculation of fruit normal vectors using edge computation and gradient direction distribution. The research results demonstrate a significant mathematical relationship between the contour edge gradient and its inclination angle, but the experiments show that the standard error projected onto the Y-axis is smaller, which is evidently more conducive to distinguishing the gradient distribution. Secondly, for the front view of occluded lychee clusters, a fully convolutional, feature prototype-based one-stage instance segmentation network is proposed, named the lychee picking point prediction network (LP3Net). This network can achieve high accuracy and real-time instance segmentation, as well as for occluded and overlapping fruits. Finally, the experimental results show that the LP3Net based on this study, along with lychee phenotypic features, achieves an average location accuracy reaching 82%, significantly improving the precision of harvesting point localization for lychee clusters.

Normal Distribution Transform (NDT) algorithm plays the role of detecting the relative pose of the vehicle in high-precision map. In this paper, a method of setting downsampling factor and grid factor for NDT relocation algorithm in dynamic environment is proposed, which can solve the problems of excessive NDT relocation error and location loss caused by dynamic objects accounting for 1% to 35% of the volume of scanning point cloud in vehicle environment. To simulate a real dynamic point cloud environment, the single-frame LiDAR point cloud space is voxelized into a mesh. Each grid is assigned a random number evenly distributed between 0 and 1. The threshold value for whether to add a Gaussian noise point is also set. Seven representative dynamic objects on the highway are selected. The threshold value of probability distribution function of Gaussian noise object needs to be set. Then the volume content of the dynamic object in the single frame point cloud space is calculated according to the set threshold value by using the definite integral. By changing the content and volume of dynamic obstacles in a dynamic environment, the effects of the downsampling factor and the grid factor on the accuracy of the repositioning trajectory are obtained. The resampling and mesh coefficients are optimized based on the analysis of the repositioning trajectory accuracy. The results show that When the current sampling factor is fixed, the grid factor of the NDT algorithm is proportional to the RMSE factor. When the NDT grid factor is fixed and the down sampling factor is equal to the side length of the obstacle, the NDT relocation accuracy is the highest and reaches the local optimum.

Multi-rotor unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is a new chemical application tool for tall stalk tropical crop Areca catechu, which could improve deposit performance, reduce operator healthy risk, and increase spraying efficiency. In this work, a spraying experiment was carried out in two A. catechu fields with two leaf area index (LAI) values, and different operational parameters were set. Spray deposit quality, spray drift, and ground loss were studied and evaluated. The results showed that the larger the LAI of A. catechu, the lesser the coverage of the chemical deposition. The maximum coverage could reach 4.28% and the minimum 0.33%. At a flight speed of 1.5 m/s, sprayed droplets had the best penetration and worst ground loss. The overall deposition effect was poor when the flight altitudes were greater than 11.09 m and the flight speed was over 2.5 m/s. Comparing flight speed of 2.5 to 1.5 m/s, the overall distance of 90% of the total drift increased to double under the same operating parameters. This study presents reference data for UAV chemical application in A. catechu protection.

IntroductionCurrent aerial plant protection with Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) usually applies full coverage route planning, which is challenging for plant protection operations in the orchards in South China. Because the fruit planting has the characteristics of dispersal and irregularity, full-coverage route spraying causes re-application as well as missed application, resulting in environmental pollution. Therefore, it is of great significance to plan an efficient, low-consumption and accurate plant protection route considering the flight characteristics of UAVs and orchard planting characteristics.MethodsThis study proposes a plant protection route planning algorithm to solve the waypoint planning problem of UAV multi-objective tasks in orchard scenes. By improving the heuristic function in Ant Colony Optimization (ACO), the algorithm combines corner cost and distance cost for multi-objective node optimization. At the same time, a sorting optimization mechanism was introduced to speed up the iteration speed of the algorithm and avoid the influence of inferior paths on the optimal results. Finally, Multi-source Ant Colony Optimization (MS-ACO) was proposed after cleaning the nodes of the solution path.ResultsThe simulation results of the three test fields show that compared with ACO, the path length optimization rate of MS-ACO are 3.89%, 4.6% and 2.86%, respectively, the optimization rate of total path angles are 21.94%, 45.06% and 55.94%, respectively, and the optimization rate of node numbers are 61.05%, 74.84% and 75.47%, respectively. MS-ACO can effectively reduce the corner cost and the number of nodes. The results of field experiments show that for each test field, MS-ACO has a significant optimization effect compared with ACO, with an optimization rate of energy consumption per meter of more than 30%, the optimization rate of flight time are 46.67%, 56% and 59.01%, respectively, and the optimization rate of corner angle are 50.76%, 61.78% and 71.1%, respectively.DiscussionThe feasibility and effectiveness of the algorithm were further verified. The algorithm proposed in this study can optimize the spraying path according to the position of each fruit tree and the flight characteristics of UAV, effectively reduce the energy consumption of UAV flight, improve the operating efficiency, and provide technical reference for the waypoint planning of plant protection UAV in the orchard scene.

The utilization of 3-dimensional point cloud technology for non-invasive measurement of plant phenotypic parameters can furnish important data for plant breeding, agricultural production, and diverse research applications. Nevertheless, the utilization of depth sensors and other tools for capturing plant point clouds often results in missing and incomplete data due to the limitations of 2.5D imaging features and leaf occlusion. This drawback obstructed the accurate extraction of phenotypic parameters. Hence, this study presented a solution for incomplete flowering Chinese Cabbage point clouds using Point Fractal Network-based techniques. The study performed experiments on flowering Chinese Cabbage by constructing a point cloud dataset of their leaves and training the network. The findings demonstrated that our network is stable and robust, as it can effectively complete diverse leaf point cloud morphologies, missing ratios, and multi-missing scenarios. A novel framework is presented for 3D plant reconstruction using a single-view RGB-D (Red, Green, Blue and Depth) image. This method leveraged deep learning to complete localized incomplete leaf point clouds acquired by RGB-D cameras under occlusion conditions. Additionally, the extracted leaf area parameters, based on triangular mesh, were compared with the measured values. The outcomes revealed that prior to the point cloud completion, the R2 value of the flowering Chinese Cabbage’s estimated leaf area (in comparison to the standard reference value) was 0.9162. The root mean square error (RMSE) was 15.88 cm2, and the average relative error was 22.11%. However, post-completion, the estimated value of leaf area witnessed a significant improvement, with an R2 of 0.9637, an RMSE of 6.79 cm2, and average relative error of 8.82%. The accuracy of estimating the phenotypic parameters has been enhanced significantly, enabling efficient retrieval of such parameters. This development offers a fresh perspective for non-destructive identification of plant phenotypes.

In this article, the finite difference parabolic equation (FDPE) method is presented to calculate the propagation loss (PL) for electromagnetic waves (EWs) in the forest environment. The FDPE method is more efficient and convenient than the empirical models and has more advantages on compatibility and accuracy for long-range EWs prediction. The Debye–Cole dual dispersion model is used to simulate the effective permittivity of vegetation. The results of the FDPE model are compared with those of the advanced refractive effects prediction system and measurement results, and a good agreement is observed. Research found that PL for EWs varies with the effective permittivity. Also, the effective permittivity is a function of radio frequency, weight moisture content, and volume content of vegetation. Thus, it is necessary to establish a statistical model to determine some relations between the PL and plant biophysical parameters. The polynomial fitting method is adopted to process a large amount of PL data for obtaining a linear function. Then, the volume content and moisture content of vegetation can be determined according to the polynomial fitting function. It provides a novel and efficient method for forestry remote telemetry, which is specifically suitable for large-scale inaccessible region with serious environment.

In aerial spraying of plant protection UAVs, the continuous reduction of pesticides is an objective process. Under the condition of constant flight state (speed and altitude), the change of pesticide loading will inevitably lead to the shift of lift force and rotor speed generated by UAV rotor rotation, which will change the distribution of the rotor flow field and affect the effect of aerial spraying operation of plant protection UAV. Therefore, the rotor speed of UAV is taken as the research object in this paper, and the adaptive refinement physical model based on the Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM) is used to numerically simulate the rotor flow field of the quadrotor plant-protection UAV at different speeds. A high-speed particle image velocimeter (PIV) was used to obtain and verify the motion state of the droplets emitted from the fan nozzle in the rotor flow field at different speeds. The results show that, with the increase of rotor speed, the maximum velocity and vorticity of the wind field under the rotor increase gradually, the top wind speed can reach 13m/s, and the maximum vorticity can reach 589.64s-1. Moreover, the maximum velocity flow value is mainly concentrated within 1m below the rotor, and the maximum vorticity value is primarily concentrated within 0.5m. However, with the increase of time, the ultimate value of velocity and vorticity decreases due to the appearance of turbulence, and the distribution of velocity and vorticity are symmetrically distributed along the centre line of the fuselage, within the range of (-1m, 1m) in the X direction. It is consistent with the motion state of droplets under the action of the rotor downwash flow field obtained by PIV. The study results are expected to reveal and understand the change law of the rotor flow field of plant protection UAVs with the dynamic change of pesticide loading to provide a theoretical basis for the development of precise spraying operation mode of plant protection UAVs and improve the operation effect.

Visual Question Answering (VQA) about diseases is an essential feature of intelligent management in smart agriculture. Currently, research on fruit tree diseases using deep learning mainly uses single-source data information, such as visible images or spectral data, yielding classification and identification results that cannot be directly used in practical agricultural decision-making. In this study, a VQA model for fruit tree diseases based on multimodal feature fusion was designed. Fusing images and Q&A knowledge of disease management, the model obtains the decision-making answer by querying questions about fruit tree disease images to find relevant disease image regions. The main contributions of this study were as follows: (1) a multimodal bilinear factorized pooling model using Tucker decomposition was proposed to fuse the image features with question features: (2) a deep modular co-attention architecture was explored to simultaneously learn the image and question attention to obtain richer graphical features and interactivity. The experiments showed that the proposed unified model combining the bilinear model and co-attentive learning in a new network architecture obtained 86.36% accuracy in decision-making under the condition of limited data (8,450 images and 4,560k Q&A pairs of data), outperforming existing multimodal methods. The data augmentation is adopted on the training set to avoid overfitting. Ten runs of 10-fold cross-validation are used to report the unbiased performance. The proposed multimodal fusion model achieved friendly interaction and fine-grained identification and decision-making performance. Thus, the model can be widely deployed in intelligent agriculture.

IntroductionIt is crucial to accurately determine the green fruit stage of citrus and formulate detailed fruit conservation and flower thinning plans to increase the yield of citrus. However, the color of citrus green fruits is similar to the background, which results in poor segmentation accuracy. At present, when deep learning and other technologies are applied in agriculture for crop yield estimation and picking tasks, the accuracy of recognition reaches 88%, and the area enclosed by the PR curve and the coordinate axis reaches 0.95, which basically meets the application requirements.To solve these problems, this study proposes a citrus green fruit detection method that is based on improved Mask-RCNN (Mask–Region Convolutional Neural Network) feature network extraction.MethodsFirst, the backbone networks are able to integrate low, medium and high level features and then perform end-to-end classification. They have excellent feature extraction capability for image classification tasks. Deep and shallow feature fusion is used to fuse the ResNet(Residual network) in the Mask-RCNN network. This strategy involves assembling multiple identical backbones using composite connections between adjacent backbones to form a more powerful backbone. This is helpful for increasing the amount of feature information that is extracted at each stage in the backbone network. Second, in neural networks, the feature map contains the feature information of the image, and the number of channels is positively related to the number of feature maps. The more channels, the more convolutional layers are needed, and the more computation is required, so a combined connection block is introduced to reduce the number of channels and improve the model accuracy. To test the method, a visual image dataset of citrus green fruits is collected and established through multisource channels such as handheld camera shooting and cloud platform acquisition. The performance of the improved citrus green fruit detection technology is compared with those of other detection methods on our dataset.ResultsThe results show that compared with Mask-RCNN model, the average detection accuracy of the improved Mask-RCNN model is 95.36%, increased by 1.42%, and the area surrounded by precision-recall curve and coordinate axis is 0.9673, increased by 0.3%.DiscussionThis research is meaningful for reducing the effect of the image background on the detection accuracy and can provide a constructive reference for the intelligent production of citrus.

As a major global pest, fall armyworm (FAW), Spodoptera frugiperda, invaded China in 2019, which has seriously threatened the safety of China's food production and raised widespread concerns. As a new low-volume application technology, an unmanned aerial spray system (UASS) is playing an important role in the control of FAW in China. However, the studies on the effect of the water application volume on the efficacy of FAW using UASS have been limited. In this study, Kromekote® cards were used to sample the deposition. The method of using a sampling pole and sampling leaf for the determination of deposition. Four water application volumes (7.5, 15.0, 22.5, and 30.0 L/ha) were evaluated with regard to the corn FAW control efficacy. A blank control was used as a comparison. The control efficacy was assessed at 1, 3, 7, and 14 days after treatment (DAT). The tested results showed that sampling methods have a significant effect on deposition results. The number of spray deposits and coverage on the sampling pole were 35 and 40% higher than those on the sampling leaves, respectively. The deposition and control efficacy gradually increased as the water application volume increased. The control efficacy at 14 DAT under different water application volumes was in the range of 59.4–85.4%. These data suggest that UASS spraying can be used to achieve a satisfying control of FAW, but the control efficacy of the water application volume of 30.0 and 22.5 L/ha did not differ significantly. Considering work efficiency, a water application volume of 22.5 L/ha is recommended for field operation.

During the growth season, jujube trees are susceptible to infestation by the leaf mite, which reduces the fruit quality and productivity. Traditional monitoring techniques for mites are time-consuming, difficult, subjective, and result in a time lag. In this study, the method based on a particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm extreme learning machine for estimation of leaf chlorophyll content (SPAD) under leaf mite infestation in jujube was proposed. Initially, image data and SPAD values for jujube orchards under four severities of leaf mite infestation were collected for analysis. Six vegetation indices and SPAD value were chosen for correlation analysis to establish the estimation model for SPAD and the vegetation indices. To address the influence of colinearity between spectral bands, the feature band with the highest correlation coefficient was retrieved first using the successive projection algorithm. In the modeling process, the PSO correlation coefficient was initialized with the convergent optimal approximation of the fitness function value; the root mean square error (RMSE) of the predicted and measured values was derived as an indicator of PSO goodness-of-fit to solve the problems of ELM model weights, threshold randomness, and uncertainty of network parameters; and finally, an iterative update method was used to determine the particle fitness value to optimize the minimum error or iteration number. The results reflected that significant differences were observed in the spectral reflectance of the jujube canopy corresponding with the severity of leaf mite infestation, and the infestation severity was negatively correlated with the SPAD value of jujube leaves. The selected vegetation indices NDVI, RVI, PhRI, and MCARI were positively correlated with SPAD, whereas TCARI and GI were negatively correlated with SPAD. The accuracy of the optimized PSO-ELM model (R2 = 0.856, RMSE = 0.796) was superior to that of the ELM model alone (R2 = 0.748, RMSE = 1.689). The PSO-ELM model for remote sensing estimation of relative leaf chlorophyll content of jujube shows high fault tolerance and improved data-processing efficiency. The results provide a reference for the utility of UAV remote sensing for monitoring leaf mite infestation of jujube.

Disease and pest stress is one of the important threats to crop growth and development, which have a very adverse impact on crop yield and quality every year, even leading to crop failure. Currently, the use of plant protection unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for pesticide spraying is the most effective means of controlling crop diseases and pests. However, the areas where crop pests and diseases occur are often presented in “point-like” or “patchy” forms, and the UAV’s full-coverage spraying method results in a great waste of pesticides. Therefore, there is an urgent need to research a method for identifying the area of diseases and pest stress to achieve precise targeted spraying, in order to reduce the amount of pesticides used and improve their utilization. By analyzing the low-altitude remote sensing images of crop fields taken by UAVs, real-time pesticide spraying prescription maps can be generated to meet the demand for precise targeted spraying. This review focuses on the actual needs of precise targeted spraying by plant protection UAVs. Firstly, the RS monitoring mechanism of crop diseases and pests by UAVs is studied. Secondly, a comprehensive investigation of the literature on UAV Low-altitude Remote Sensing (UAV-LARS) technology for monitoring and identifying crop diseases and pests is conducted, summarizing the research progress in monitoring and identifying crop diseases and pests, especially in wheat, cotton, and rice. Finally, the key issues to be addressed and the future development direction of UAV-LARS monitoring of crop diseases and pests are proposed.

The utilization of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for the precise and convenient detection of litchi fruits, in order to estimate yields and perform statistical analysis, holds significant value in the complex and variable litchi orchard environment. Currently, litchi yield estimation relies predominantly on manual rough counts, which often result in discrepancies between the estimated values and the actual production figures. This study proposes a large-scene and high-density litchi fruit recognition method based on the improved You Only Look Once version 5 (YOLOv5) model. The main objective is to enhance the accuracy and efficiency of yield estimation in natural orchards. First, the PANet in the original YOLOv5 model is replaced with the improved Bi-directional Feature Pyramid Network (BiFPN) to enhance the model’s cross-scale feature fusion. Second, the P2 feature layer is fused into the BiFPN to enhance the learning capability of the model for high-resolution features. After that, the Normalized Gaussian Wasserstein Distance (NWD) metric is introduced into the regression loss function to enhance the learning ability of the model for litchi tiny targets. Finally, the Slicing Aided Hyper Inference (SAHI) is used to enhance the detection of tiny targets without increasing the model’s parameters or computational memory. The experimental results show that the overall AP value of the improved YOLOv5 model has been effectively increased by 22%, compared to the original YOLOv5 model’s AP value of 50.6%. Specifically, the APs value for detecting small targets has increased from 27.8% to 57.3%. The model size is only 3.6% larger than the original YOLOv5 model. Through ablation and comparative experiments, our method has successfully improved accuracy without compromising the model size and inference speed. Therefore, the proposed method in this paper holds practical applicability for detecting litchi fruits in orchards. It can serve as a valuable tool for providing guidance and suggestions for litchi yield estimation and subsequent harvesting processes. In future research, optimization can be continued for the small target detection problem, while it can be extended to study the small target tracking problem in dense scenarios, which is of great significance for litchi yield estimation.

To enhance the efficiency of mechanical automatic picking of cherry tomatoes in a precision agriculture environment, this study proposes an improved target detection algorithm based on YOLOv5n. The improvement steps are as follows: First, the K-means++ clustering algorithm is utilized to update the scale and aspect ratio of the anchor box, adapting it to the shape characteristics of cherry tomatoes. Secondly, the coordinate attention (CA) mechanism is introduced to expand the receptive field range and reduce interference from branches, dead leaves, and other backgrounds in the recognition of cherry tomato maturity. Next, the traditional loss function is replaced by the bounding box regression loss with dynamic focusing mechanism (WIoU) loss function. The outlier degree and dynamic nonmonotonic focusing mechanism are introduced to address the boundary box regression balance problem between high-quality and low-quality data. This research employs a self-built cherry tomato dataset to train the target detection algorithms before and after the improvements. Comparative experiments are conducted with YOLO series algorithms. The experimental results indicate that the improved model has achieved a 1.4% increase in both precision and recall compared to the previous model. It achieves an average accuracy mAP of 95.2%, an average detection time of 5.3 ms, and a weight file size of only 4.4 MB. These results demonstrate that the model fulfills the requirements for real-time detection and lightweight applications. It is highly suitable for deployment in embedded systems and mobile devices. The improved model presented in this paper enables real-time target recognition and maturity detection for cherry tomatoes. It provides rapid and accurate target recognition guidance for achieving mechanical automatic picking of cherry tomatoes.

The realization that mobile phones can detect rice diseases and insect pests not only solves the problems of low efficiency and poor accuracy from manually detection and reporting, but it also helps farmers detect and control them in the field in a timely fashion, thereby ensuring the quality of rice grains. This study examined two Improved detection models for the detection of six high-frequency diseases and insect pests. These models were the Improved You Only Look Once (YOLO)v5s and YOLOv7-tiny based on their lightweight object detection networks. The Improved YOLOv5s was introduced with the Ghost module to reduce computation and optimize the model structure, and the Improved YOLOv7-tiny was introduced with the Convolutional Block Attention Module (CBAM) and SIoU to improve model learning ability and accuracy. First, we evaluated and analyzed the detection accuracy and operational efficiency of the models. Then we deployed two proposed methods to a mobile phone. We also designed an application to further verify their practicality for detecting rice diseases and insect pests. The results showed that Improved YOLOv5s achieved the highest F1-Score of 0.931, 0.961 in mean average precision (mAP) (0.5), and 0.648 in mAP (0.5:0.9). It also reduced network parameters, model size, and the floating point operations per second (FLOPs) by 47.5, 45.7, and 48.7%, respectively. Furthermore, it increased the model inference speed by 38.6% compared with the original YOLOv5s model. Improved YOLOv7-tiny outperformed the original YOLOv7-tiny in detection accuracy, which was second only to Improved YOLOv5s. The probability heat maps of the detection results showed that Improved YOLOv5s performed better in detecting large target areas of rice diseases and insect pests, while Improved YOLOv7-tiny was more accurate in small target areas. On the mobile phone platform, the precision and recall of Improved YOLOv5s under FP16 accuracy were 0.925 and 0.939, and the inference speed was 374 ms/frame, which was superior to Improved YOLOv7-tiny. Both of the proposed improved models realized accurate identification of rice diseases and insect pests. Moreover, the constructed mobile phone application based on the improved detection models provided a reference for realizing fast and efficient field diagnoses.

Crop nutrient biochemical information (mainly including chlorophyll class and nutrient elements mainly nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium) is an important basis for revealing crop growth and development patterns and their relationship with the environment. Hyperspectral technology has been rapidly developed and applied in crop nutrient biochemical information monitoring research. This paper firstly describes the theoretical basis of hyperspectral technology for monitoring crop nutrients and biochemical information. Then, the research progress of hyperspectral technology in monitoring nutrient and biochemical information of crops in different growth periods or different growth environments is outlined. Meanwhile, the shortcomings of the current technology in these research directions and the future research trends are discussed. Finally, the modeling methods for building crop nutrient biochemical information monitoring models by applying hyperspectral data are systematically outlined. And the effects of different spectral pre-processing methods, spectral effective information extraction methods and modeling algorithms on the accuracy of monitoring models are analyzed. On this basis, the challenges and prospects of hyperspectral technology in monitoring crop nutrient biochemical information are presented, aiming to provide relevant theoretical basis and technical reference for the research related to monitoring and inversion of crop physiological parameters based on hyperspectral technology.

In the present study, we used device visualization in tandem with deep learning to detect weeds in the wheat crop system in actual time. We selected the PMAS Arid Agriculture University research farm and wheat crop fields in diverse weather environments to collect the weed images. Some 6000 images were collected for the study. Throughout the season, tfhe databank was assembled to detect the weeds. For this study, we used two different frameworks, TensorFlow and PyTorch, to apply deep learning algorithms. PyTorch’s implementation of deep learning algorithms performed comparatively better than that of TensorFlow. We concluded that the neural network implemented through the PyTorch framework achieves a superior outcome in speed and accuracy compared to other networks, such as YOLO variants. This work implemented deep learning models for weed detection using different frameworks. While working on real-time detection models, it is very important to consider the inference time and detection accuracy. Therefore, we have compared the results in terms of execution time and prediction accuracy. In particular, the accuracy of weed removal from wheat crops was judged to be 0.89 and 0.91, respectively, with inference times of 9.43 ms and 12.38 ms on the NVIDIA RTX2070 GPU for each picture (640 × 640).
