Abstract. Background:. There is a need for effective and safe therapies for psoriasis that provide sustained benefits. The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy and safety of tildrakizumab, an anti-interleukin-23p19 monoclonal antibody, for treating moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis in Chinese patients. Methods:. In this multi-center, double-blind, phase III trial, patients with moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis were enrolled and randomly assigned (1:1) to receive subcutaneous tildrakizumab 100 mg or placebo at weeks 0 and 4. Patients initially assigned to placebo were switched to receive tildrakizumab at weeks 12, 16, and every 12 weeks thereafter. Patients in the tildrakizumab group continued with tildrakizumab at week 16, and every 12 weeks until week 52. The primary endpoint was the Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI 75) response rate at week 12. Results:. In the human body, non-centrosymmetric biological structures exhibit piezoelectric effect across from microscopic biomolecular building blocks to macroscopic tissues and organs. However, the fabrication of piezoelectric devices from discarded natural tissues and organs has rarely been exploited for energy harvesting applications. Herein, the extracted human teeth were recycled as an active layer in a piezoelectric nanogenerator for power generation. Due to the piezoelectric effect of enamel and dentin, a human teeth-based sandwiched piezoelectric nanogenerator was fabricated, producing high and stable power outputs with an open-circuit voltage of approximately 0.9 V under an external force at 60 N. Furthermore, the high mechanical durability of the piezoelectric nanogenerator was also verified after 1600 pressing-and-releasing cycles without noticeable output degradation. Notably, for the first time, a light-emitting diode (LED) was illuminated by the human teeth-based piezoelectric device. This work exemplifies a sustainable strategy to recycle the extracted human teeth by fabricating a piezoelectric nanogenerator for energy harvesting, providing inspiration for converting waste into wealth toward green energy in bionanotechnology.

ObjectiveNausea and vomiting are the distressing and debilitating side effects of chemotherapy. This study explores the relationship between the degree of nausea and vomiting and physical activity in patients with lung cancer during the first chemotherapy cycle.DesignA total of 107 patients with lung cancer who received platinum drugs during chemotherapy in a hospital in Shanghai, China, in 2023 were involved in this study. Data were collected with medical record system and self-reported questionnaires.Questionnaires included the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) and Index of Nausea, Vomiting, and Retching (INVR). IPAQ was used before chemotherapy; INVR was used on the second and sixth day of chemotherapy, followed by the analysis of the correlation between physical activity status and degree of nausea and vomiting during chemotherapy. The influencing factors of nausea and vomiting during chemotherapy in patients with lung cancer were analyzed using logistic regression analysis.ResultsMore than half of the patients experienced nausea, vomiting or retching related symptoms after chemotherapy, and the proportion of moderate to high physical activity was 50.5%. Univariate analysis showed that the degree of nausea and vomiting was influenced by factors such as age, gender, and history of drinking (P < 0.05). The degree of nausea and vomiting was negatively correlated with physical activity (P < 0.05). The multivariate linear analysis showed that gender, history of drinking, and moderate and high physical activity are contributing factors to nausea and vomiting during chemotherapy (P < 0.05).ConclusionModerate and high physical activity before chemotherapy is a protective factor for nausea and vomiting in patients with lung cancer. Physical activity can not only improve the degree of nausea and vomiting in patients with lung cancer but also reduce the incidence in these patients during the first chemotherapy cycle.

BackgroundThis study aimed to explore the regulatory effect of anserine on HUVEC cell injury and thrombosis in deep venous thrombosis (DVT) rats, and to elucidate the underlying molecular mechanisms.MethodsNon-targeted metabolomics data analyses were conducted using an ultra-performance liquid chromatography system Vanquish UHPLC and mass spectrometer to detect plasma metabolism profiles. The transcriptome sequencing and gene intervention experiments were performed to verify the regulatory effect. Further in vivo and in vitro experiments were performed. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was used to detect the levels of P-selectin, E-selectin, and vWF, hematoxylin-eosin (HE) staining was performed to observe thrombotic and inflammatory cell infiltration, flow cytometry and TUNEL assays were performed to detect apoptosis, and qPCR and WB assays were conducted to determine the gene and protein expression.ResultsAnserine alleviated HUVECs injury, reduced adhesion molecule expression, and inflammation. It decreased P-selectin, E-selectin, vWF, THBD, TFPI levels, and apoptosis while promoting NOS3, ET-1, and NO release in HUVECs. In DVT rats, anserine reduced P-selectin, E-selectin, vWF, thrombosis, cell infiltration, apoptosis, and promoted NO release. Transcriptome sequencing and gene intervention confirmed anserine’s regulation of the PI3K-Akt pathway and coagulation via MYB. CARNMT1, a regulatory enzyme for anserine metabolism, increased anserine content, inhibiting coagulation, thrombosis, cell infiltration, and promoting NO release in rats.ConclusionThis study confirmed anserine could alleviate DVT by improving the inflammatory response, inhibiting blood agglutination, and promoting vasodilation, providing new potential therapeutic targets, important scientific evidence for the development of DVT management, and new clues for an in-depth understanding of its molecular mechanisms.

The dried roots of Scutellaria baicalensis (S. baicalensis) have been widely used as a traditional medicine. Recently, climate change and human activities have caused the degeneration of its wildlife habitat. However, there is rare knowledge on the effect and interactive effect of different variables on the spatial heterogeneity of S. baicalensis and how the pattern of suitable cultivation area in China would shift in response to climate change. Based on the Geodetector and Habitat Suitability Index (HSI) method, we proposed an assessment model to identify the critical environmental variable(s) affecting the distribution of suitable cultivation area for S. baicalensis in China and to project its shift under climate change. The results showed that soil and mean annual temperature are two determining variables in its spatial heterogeneity in China. Compared to 1981–2010, future climate change may result in a decrease in its suitable area, and yet may result in an increase in the extremely suitable area (about 1.00–1.35 million km2). S. baicalensis in the southern and northwestern part of its current distribution and the southwestern part and small area of northern China may experience expansion during the 21st century, while S. baicalensis in southern China, the Huang-Huai-Hai plain, and the midwest of northwestern China may experience contractions. Meanwhile, climate warming is expected to shift its distribution northwest through an expansion at the northern (at least 84 km) and western (at least 62 km) boundary and contraction at the southern (at least 529 km) boundary, respectively. These results could provide valuable information to policy-makers for the conservation and scientific introduction of S. baicalensis.

The growth status of winter wheat seedlings during the greening period is called the seedling situation. Timely and accurate determinations of the seedling situation type are important for subsequent field management measures and yield estimation. To solve the problems of low-efficiency artificial classification, subjective doping, inaccurate classification, and overfitting in transfer learning in classifying the seedling condition of winter wheat seedlings during the greening period, we propose an improved ConvNeXt winter wheat seedling status classification and identification network based on the pre-training–fine-tuning model addressing over-fitting in transfer learning. Based on ConvNeXt, a SETFL-ConvNeXt network (Squeeze and Excitation attention-tanh ConvNeXt using focal loss), a winter wheat seedling identification and grading network was designed by adding an improved SET attention module (Squeeze and Excitation attention-tanh) and replacing the Focal Loss function. The accuracy of the SETFL-ConvNeXt reached 96.68%. Compared with the classic ConvNeXt model, the accuracy of the Strong class, First class, and Third class increased by 1.188%, 2.199%, and 0.132%, respectively. With the model, we also compared the effects of different optimization strategies, five pre-training-fine-tuning models, and the degree of change in the pre-trained model. The accuracy of the fine-tuning models trained in the remaining layers increased by 0.19–6.19% using the last three frozen blocks, and the accuracy of the pre-trained model increased by 3.1–8.56% with the least degree of change method compared with the other methods. The SETFL-ConvNeXt network proposed in this study has high accuracy and can effectively address overfitting, providing theoretical and technical support for classifying winter wheat seedlings during the greening period. It also provides solutions and ideas for researchers who encounter overfitting.

Background: Bladder cancer (BLCA) is a common malignant tumor of urinary system and prognostic biomarkers are needed for better clinical decision-making and patient management. Cancer stem cells (CSCs) are involved in carcinogenesis, development, metastasis and recurrence of BLCA. This study explored the prognostic and predictive value of CSCs-related genes and laid the groundwork for precision treatment development in BLCA. Methods: The mRNA data and corresponding clinical information obtained from TCGA-BLCA cohort was used to discover biomarkers and develop CSCs-related prognostic model, which was further validated in GSE32548 and GSE32894 datasets. In addition, the association between CSCs-related risk score and therapeutic efficacy was analyzed to explore the potential predictive value of the prognostic model. Results: We identified four CSCs-related subtypes and 900 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) among subtypes. Then the CSCs-related prognostic model was built based on 16 CSCs-related DEGs with the most significant prognostic value. The detection of the moisture content of wheat is an important index used to measure the quality and preservation of wheat. In order to rapidly and non-destructively detect the moisture content of wheat, in this study, we designed a stripline detection device that measures 151 frequency points in the 50–200 MHz frequency range with a vector network analyzer. Random forest (RF), extreme learning machine (ELM), and BP neural network prediction models were established, using the frequency, temperature, volume density and dielectric constant as input and the water content as output. It was shown that, in the frequency range 50–200 MHz, the permittivity of wheat decreases as the frequency increases, and that this is negatively correlated. The dielectric constant of wheat increases as the moisture content, temperature, and bulk density increase, and these are positively correlated. The random forest (RF) prediction model, which uses the frequency, temperature, effective dielectric constant εeff. and volume density as inputs and the wheat moisture content as the output, demonstrates the best performance. The determination coefficient (R2) = 0.99977, the mean absolute error (MAE) = 0.044368, the mean square error (MAE) = 0.0053011, and the root mean square error (RMSE) = 0.072809. This study provides a new device and method for the detection of the moisture content of wheat. The device is small and is not easily disturbed by the external environment. It can be measured in a variety of conditions and is important for the development of low-cost, high-precision, and portable devices for the detection of the moisture content of wheat.

Abstract Background Intramedullary spinal cord abscesses (ISCA) are rare, even more so in association with brain abscesses. Infective endocarditis is an uncommon cause of ISCA. In this case study, we report a patient with intramedullary abscesses and multiple brain abscesses due to subacute infective endocarditis. Case presentation A 54-year-old man presented with a 7-day history of head and neck pain and numbness in both lower limbs. Intramedullary abscess combined with multiple brain abscesses was diagnosed based on blood culture, head and spinal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), contrast-enhanced MRI, and magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Echocardiography revealed vegetations on the mitral valve and severe mitral regurgitation, which the authors believe was caused by subacute infective endocarditis. With ceftriaxone combined with linezolid anti-infective therapy, the patient's symptoms and imaging was improved during follow-up. Conclusions This case hopes to raise the vigilance of clinicians for ISCA. When considering a patient with an ISCA, it is necessary to complete blood culture, MRI of the brain and spinal cord, and echocardiography to further identify whether the patient also has a brain abscess and whether the cause is infective endocarditis.

Background:Mental health problems, especially anxiety and depression, during the pandemic caused by Omicron variant have aroused a great concern. The drastic change in daily routine leads to a higher level of life stress. Since postgraduate students usually have worse mental health problems, they could be vulnerable to life stress. Social support would be a protective factor against depression and anxiety, and might play a moderating role between life stress and these mental health indices.Aims:This study is to explore the relationship between life stress and mental health, and how social support alleviates such relationship.Methods:A set of online questionnaires, including (1) items of 11 points visual analog scale (VAS) to measure postgraduate students’ current life stress and social support, (2) Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD-7), and (3) Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ), was handed out to postgraduate students from several universities in Shanghai. Data of 110 postgraduate students were collected and analyzed. Pearson correlations and mediate effect tests were conducted to verify the potential relationship.Results:(1) Life stress was positively correlated with the level of anxiety and depression. Social support was negatively correlated with life stress and the level of anxiety and depression. (2) The interaction between social support level and life stress played a significant role in predicting anxiety level (β = –0.020, p = 0.044). The interaction between social support level and life stress also predicted the level of depression (β = –0.025, p = 0.009).Conclusions:High-level social support had effectively mitigated the steep slope between the restrained life stress and mental health, which indicated that more available social support would be promising to alleviate the risk of anxiety and depression during the static management period.

Utilizing the digital economy’s contribution to green total factor productivity is a key strategy for accelerating China’s green growth, although more research is still needed to understand the mechanism of this influence. This study uses panel data from 282 Chinese prefecture-level cities from 2011 to 2019 to empirically assess the impact of the digital economy and city size on GTFP. First, GTFP overall exhibits an upward trend with excellent spatial correlation and minimal regional variation. Second, the findings demonstrate that, while surrounding locations’ GTFP is not affected by the digital economy, local productivity can be improved. Third, the heterogeneity study demonstrates that the digital economy contributes more to local GTFP in the eastern region compared to the central and western regions, with the central region making the largest contribution to GTFP in the surrounding regions; the first, second, and third tier cities have more contributions from the digital economy to local and neighboring GTFP than the fourth and fifth tier cities. Fourth, city size positively modifies the relationship between the green total factor productivity and the digital economy. The western region is where the positive moderating effect of city size expansion is greatest. Moreover, compared to first-, second-, and third-tier cities, the fourth- and fifth-tier cities have a stronger beneficial moderating effect of city size increase. In light of this, we should focus on the growth of the digital economy, optimize city scale, and fully exploit the scale effect produced by the concentration of the digital industries and the spillover effect produced by the spread of the digital technology.

BackgroundThe COVID-19 pandemic has caused significant psychological stress among healthcare workers. This study aimed to clarify the factors that influenced health workers’ posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms.MethodA total of 443 healthcare workers from eight Mental Health Centers in Shandong were recruited to attend an online survey. Participants completed self-evaluation measures of exposure to the COVID-19 environment and PTSD symptoms, as well as measures of potential protective factors such as euthymia and perceived social support.ResultsAbout 45.37% of healthcare workers had severe symptoms of PTSD symptoms. Drought is a natural disaster with severe global agricultural and economic impacts. Accurate drought indices are needed for improved assessment and monitoring; however, most existing drought indices poorly represent agricultural drought due to complex interactions among meteorological factors, crop and soil conditions. Here, we compute an integrated drought condition index (IDCI) based on the 3-month standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI3), vegetation cover index (VCI) and soil moisture condition index (SMCI). We apply the IDCI to monitoring agricultural drought in Xinjiang, China. After regional evaluations with soil moisture, precipitation and air temperature observations, as well as with the scaled crop yields index, the IDCI was used to describe spatiotemporal changes in regional drought in Xinjiang during 2000–2018, revealing adverse impacts on crop yield (beet, wheat and vegetables). The IDCI is strongly correlated with observed soil moisture and performs better than SMCI, VCI or SPEI3, demonstrating that the IDCI is suitable for agricultural drought monitoring. The most severe drought occurred in the spring to autumn of 2008. Droughts before 2008 were more serious than those after 2008, in terms of both severity and frequency. Droughts in northern, southern and eastern Xinjiang, as well as in the Tianshan Mountains, were generally increasing before 2008 and then weakened after 2008.

Abstract Polysulfide rubber (PSR) is a versatile sealing material, but suffers from poor mechanical properties, which can be solved by increasing the crosslinking density and introducing fillers. In this study, functionalized molybdenum disulfide (MMoS2) by in situ incorporation with different thiol‐containing compounds is obtained. On the basis of the optimum content of 0.5 wt.%, the performance of MMoS2/PSR is systematically studied. The results show that the interfacial interaction between MMoS2 and the matrix is improved. In particular, PSR reinforced by MoS2 modified with polysulfide oligomer (MoS2‐LPO) behaves the most excellently. Its solvent resistance and crosslink density are also improved by 14.2% and 39.4%, respectively. The storage modulus of MoS2‐LPO/PSR is 394% higher than that of the unmodified one. This is attributed to the MoS2‐LPO playing the role of filler and large‐sized solid crosslinker at the same time. Through broadband dielectric spectroscopy (BDS), it is determined that MoS2‐LPO/PSR has the longest relaxation time due to the stronger interfacial interaction. In order to understand the effect of interfacial interaction between MoS2 and PSR on the properties of the composites more clearly, MoS2 modified with other functional groups are also discussed.

To date, there is a lack of fine-scale forest biological hazard risk (FBHR) data for Chinese forests on a national scale. This study explored the spatial and temporal patterns of the FBHR in prefecture-level cities in China. Data on the forest biological hazard (FBH) damage area and forest cover area of each prefecture-level city in China from 2007 to 2019 were used. Based on the statistical analysis characteristics of the FBH rate of each prefecture-level city in recent years, the spatial pattern of the FBHR of prefecture-level cities in China was obtained by optimal fitting. The results of the study show that the overall average annual occurrence of FBHs in China from 2007 to 2019 was 11,420 thousand hectares. Although the incidence rate showed a decreasing trend, the occurrence area showed a decreasing and then increasing trend. The incidence of FBHs in each prefecture-level city in China showed a pattern of “heavy in the north and light in the south”; the overall incidence of FBHs showed a pattern of “high in the central part and low in the north and south”. The FBHR at the prefecture level in China showed a circular scattering spatial pattern, and significant geographical differences were observed, with an average annual expected incidence of approximately 1.3‰. Among them, the highest FBHR at the prefecture level, was mainly concentrated along the Henan, Anhui and Shandong borders. A high FBHR was distributed in the Jiangsu, Xinjiang, and Ningxia-Neimenggu areas. A medium FBHR was distributed in the North China Plain, Liaoning and Sichuan. A low FBHR was distributed in Central China, North China, Xinjiang and Liaoning. An extremely low FBHR was concentrated in Heilongjiang-Jilin-Qinghai-Gansu, southern East China, Southwest China and South China. The results of this study reveal the FBHR patterns on a refined scale in China and provide a reference for managing, preventing, and controlling the FBH.

Periodontitis is among most common human inflammatory diseases and characterized by destruction of tooth-supporting tissues that will eventually lead to tooth loss. Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a group of metabolic disorders characterized by chronic hyperglycemia which results from defects in insulin secretion and/or insulin resistance. Numerous studies have provided evidence for the inter-relationship between DM and periodontitis that has been considered as the sixth most frequent complication of DM. However, the mechanisms are not fully understood yet. The impact of DM on periodontitis through hyperglycemia and inflammatory pathways is well described, but the effects of DM on oral microbiota remain controversial according to previous studies. Recent studies using next-generation sequencing technology indicate that DM can alter the biodiversity and composition of oral microbiome especially subgingival microbiome. This may be another mechanism by which DM risks or aggravates periodontitis. Thus, to understand the role of oral microbiome in periodontitis of diabetics and the mechanism of shifts of oral microbiome under DM would be valuable for making specific therapeutic regimens for treating periodontitis patients with DM or preventing diabetic patients from periodontitis. This article reviews the role of oral microbiome in periodontal health (symbiosis) and disease (dysbiosis), highlights the oral microbial shifts under DM and summarizes the mechanism of the shifts.

Periodontitis is highly prevalent worldwide. It is characterized by periodontal attachment and alveolar bone destruction, which not only leads to tooth loss but also results in the exacerbation of systematic diseases. As such, periodontitis has a significant negative impact on the daily lives of patients. Detailed exploration of the molecular mechanisms underlying the physiopathology of periodontitis may contribute to the development of new therapeutic strategies for periodontitis and the associated systematic diseases. Pyroptosis, as one of the inflammatory programmed cell death pathways, is implicated in the pathogenesis of periodontitis. Progress in the field of pyroptosis has greatly enhanced our understanding of its role in inflammatory diseases. This review first summarizes the mechanisms underlying the activation of pyroptosis in periodontitis and the pathological role of pyroptosis in the progression of periodontitis. Then, the crosstalk between pyroptosis with apoptosis, necroptosis, and NETosis in periodontitis is discussed. Moreover, pyroptosis, as a novel link that connects periodontitis with systemic disease, is also reviewed. Finally, the current challenges associated with pyroptosis as a potential therapeutic target for periodontitis are highlighted.

Objective: To evaluate the regeneration potential of periodontitis tissue treated by low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) combined with the guided tissue regeneration (GTR) technique in a beagle model of furcation involvement (FI).Background: Achieving predictable regeneration remains a clinical challenge for periodontitis tissue due to the compromised regenerative potential caused by chronic inflammation stimulation. LIPUS, an FDA-approved therapy for long bone fracture and non-unions, has been demonstrated effective in the in vitro attenuation of inflammation-induced dysfunction of periodontal ligament stem cells (PDLSCs), the key cells contributing to periodontal regeneration. However, the in vivo effect of LIPUS on periodontitis tissue is rarely reported.Methods: A beagle model of FI was established, and the experimental teeth were randomly assigned into three groups: control group, GTR group, and GTR+LIPUS group. Radiographic examinations were performed, and clinical periodontal parameters were recorded to reflect the periodontal condition of different groups. Histological analyses using H&E and Masson’s staining were conducted to evaluate the periodontal tissue regeneration.Results: LIPUS could enhance new periodontal bone formation and bone matrix maturity in FI after GTR treatment. Moreover, clinical assessment and histomorphometric analyses revealed less inflammatory infiltration and superior vascularization within bone grafts in the LIPUS treatment group, indicating the anti-inflammatory and pro-angiogenic effects of LIPUS in FI.Conclusion: Our investigation on a large animal model demonstrated that LIPUS is a promising adjunctive approach for the regeneration of periodontitis tissue, paving a new avenue for LIPUS application in the field of periodontal regenerative medicine.

Road network data are an important part of many applications, e.g., intelligent transportation and urban planning. At present, most of the approaches to road network generation are dominated by single data sources including images, point cloud data, trajectories, etc., which may cause the fragmentation of information. This study proposes a novel strategy to obtain the vector data of road networks by combining images and trajectory data with a postprocessing method named RNITP. The designed RNITP includes two parts: an initial generation layer of road network detection and a postprocessing layer of vector map acquirement. At the first layer, there are three steps of road network detection including road information interpretation from images based on a new deep learning model (denoted as SPBAM-LinkNet), road detection from trajectories data by rasterizing, and road information fusion by using OR operation. The last layer is used to generate a vector map based on a postprocessing method that is focused on error identification and removal. Experiments were conducted using two kinds of datasets: CHN6-CUG road datasets and HB road datasets. The results show that the accuracy, F1 score, and MIoU of SPBAM-LinkNet on CHN6-CUG and HB were (0.9695, 0.7369, 0.7760) and (0.9387, 0.7257, 0.7514), respectively, which are better than other typical models (e.g., Unet, DeepLabv3+, D-Linknet, NL-Linknet). In addition, the F1 score, IoU, and recall of the vector map obtained from RNITP are 0.8883, 0.7991, and 0.9065, respectively.

The rapid and nondestructive detection of tea leaf moisture content (MC) is of great significance to processing tea with an automatic assembly line. This study proposes an MC detection method based on microwave scattering parameters (SPs). Through the established free-space electromagnetic measurement device, 901 different frequency points are taken between 2.45 and 6 GHz using a vector network analyzer (VNA). The SPs of tea leaves with different moisture contents (5.72–55.26%) at different bulk density and different sample thicknesses were measured. The relationship between frequency, S21 amplitude and moisture content, thickness, and bulk density of tea was analyzed using correlation coefficients, significance analysis, and model construction. Back propagation (BP) neural network, decision tree (DT), and random forest (RF) MC prediction models were established with the frequency, amplitude, and phase of the SPs, thickness, and bulk density of the samples as inputs. The results showed that the RF-based model had the best performance, with determination coefficient (R2) = 0.998, mean absolute error (MAE) = 0.242, and root mean square error (RMSE) = 0.614. Compared to other nondestructive testing processes for tea, this method is simpler and more accurate. This study provides a new method for the detection of tea MC, which may have potential applications in tea processing.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) play a pivotal role in regulating a number of physiologic and pathologic processes including bone marrow mesenchymal stem cell (BMSC) osteogenic differentiation, making them a candidate used to promote osteogenesis. However, due to intrinsic structure and characteristics, “naked” miRNAs are unstable in serum and could not pass across the cellular membrane. Nano delivery systems seem to be a solution to these issues. Recently, graphene oxide (GO)-based nanomaterials are considered to be promising for gene delivery due to their unique physiochemical characteristics such as high surface area, biocompatibility, and easy modification. In this work, a GO-based nanocomplex functionalized by polyethyleneglycol (PEG) and polyethylenimine (PEI) was prepared for loading and delivering miR-29b, which participates in multiple steps of bone formation. The nanocomplex revealed good biocompatibility, miRNA loading capacity, and transfection efficiency. The miR-29b/GO-PEG-PEI nanocomplex was capsulated into chitosan (CS) hydrogel for osteogenesis. In vitro and in vivo evaluation indicated that miR-29b/GO-PEG-PEI@CS composite hydrogel was able to promote BMSC osteogenic differentiation and bone regeneration. All these results indicate that PEG/PEI functionalized GO could serve as a promising candidate for miRNA cellular delivery, and the miR-29b/GO-PEG-PEI@CS hydrogel has the potential for repairing bone defects in vivo.

This work presents the design and test of an e-textile based functional electrical stimulation system for post-stroke upper limb rehabilitation. The prototype was tested on five stroke survivors to assess stimulation comfort, the stimulation intensity required to achieve hand opening, and ease of use. Wrist extension was measured using two inertial measurement units. The wearable e-textile prototype achieved similar stimulation comfort compared to high-quality hydrogel electrodes with a score difference of between 0 and 1. The stimulation intensity to achieve full hand opening was the same for the hydrogel electrodes and the e-textiles for all five participants. A second design based on a knitted sleeve has been assessed in terms of usability. Additional new designs have been proposed to improve the usability.

Highland barley is an important grain crop in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP) of China. However, rare knowledge is available on the spatial pattern of habitat suitability across QTP and how it would be affected by future climate change. Based on 191 presence records, the probability of highland barley across the QTP under climate change is simulated by using the maximum entropy (MaxEnt) model. And the critical environmental variable (s) affecting the distribution of highland barley and the hotspots of habitat degradation/expansion during the 21st century are investigated. The results show that the daily minimum temperature of coldest month and annual precipitation are determined as the two most important environmental variables for predicting habitat distributions. Across the QTP, future climate change may result in an increase in the suitable area for planting highland barley northward, westward, and upward during the 21st century. Highland barley in river valleys of the southeastern and northeast plateau, where areas of medium and optimal suitable habitats are concentrated, may experience contractions in areas of habitat suitability during the 21st century. By the late 21st century, the average expansion and contraction of suitable habitat areas are 0.46 and 0.14 million km2, respectively, and the upper limit elevation suitable for planting barley may increase by 215 m. Our results could provide valuable distribution information to the national and local administrators for developing the special industry of highland barley in the QTP.

Abstract Chronic pain surrounding the temporomandibular joints and masticatory muscles is often the primary chief complaint of patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMD) seeking treatment. Yet, the neuro-pathophysiological basis underlying it remains to be clarified. Neuroimaging techniques have provided a deeper understanding of what happens to brain structure and function in TMD patients with chronic pain. Therefore, we performed a systematic review of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies investigating structural and functional brain alterations in TMD patients to further unravel the neurobiological underpinnings of TMD-related pain. Online databases (PubMed, EMBASE, and Web of Science) were searched up to August 3, 2019, as complemented by a hand search in reference lists. A total of 622 papers were initially identified after duplicates removed and 25 studies met inclusion criteria for this review. Notably, the variations of MRI techniques used and study design among included studies preclude a meta-analysis and we discussed the findings qualitatively according to the specific neural system or network the brain regions were involved in. Brain changes were found in pathways responsible for abnormal pain perception, including the classic trigemino-thalamo-cortical system and the lateral and medial pain systems. Dysfunction and maladaptive changes were also identified in the default mode network, the top-down antinociceptive periaqueductal gray-raphe magnus pathway, as well as the motor system. TMD patients displayed altered brain activations in response to both innocuous and painful stimuli compared with healthy controls. Additionally, evidence indicates that splint therapy can alleviate TMD-related symptoms by inducing functional brain changes. In summary, MRI research provides important novel insights into the altered neural manifestations underlying chronic pain in TMD.

This study aimed to investigate the water dissipation pattern from peanut pods under natural drying conditions after harvest. The Shandong peanut Luhua 22 was used to examine the effects of varying moisture content, bulk density, and porosity on the relative permittivity of the peanut at a signal frequency of 5.8 GHz. The peanut dielectric constant, porosity, and bulk density were used as inputs and peanut kernel moisture as outputs. Support vector regression (SVR), extreme learning machine (ELM), sparrow search algorithm-support vector regression (SSA-SVR), and sparrow search algorithm-extreme learning machine (SSA-ELM) were used to create a prediction model of peanut kernel moisture content. The results show that the water content of peanut kernels decreased in a fast and then slow manner throughout the drying process and that the water content of kernels was stable at 5–8% at the end of drying. The relative permittivity of peanut kernels increased with an increase in the water content and bulk density but decreased with an increase in porosity. The developed SVR, ELM, SSA-SVR, and SSA-ELM water-content prediction models were validated and analyzed in this study, with the model test set coefficients of determination of 0.936, 0.949,0.984, and 0.994, respectively. In comparison to SVR, ELM, and SSA-SVR, the SSA-ELM root mean square error was reduced by 0.0080, 0.0060, and 0.0012, respectively. According to the findings, the ELM neural network model, which is based on the optimization of the SSA, has an improved prediction accuracy. This prediction model provides a theoretical foundation for the variations in peanut seed moisture content during the natural drying process after harvesting peanuts in Shandong, which will be useful for future peanut storage and transportation.

Background. Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is the third most prevalent vascular disease worldwide. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) play regulatory roles in functions of endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs), which is becoming a promising therapeutic choice for thrombus resolution. Nevertheless, the role of miR-206 in EPCs is unclear. Methods. EPCs were isolated from the peripheral blood of patients with DVT. In DVT mouse models, DVT was induced by stenosis of the inferior vena cava (IVC). The levels of miR-206 and gap junction protein alpha 1 (GJA1) in EPCs and vascular tissues of DVT mice were detected by reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR). The proliferation, migration, apoptosis, and angiogenesis were tested by cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8) assay, Transwell assay, flow cytometry analysis, and in vitro tube formation assay. The levels of autophagy-related proteins as well as the level of GJA1 in EPCs and vascular tissues were evaluated by western blotting. DVT formation in vivo was observed through hematoxylin-eosin (HE) staining. The expression of thrombus resolution markers, CD34 molecule (CD34) and matrix metallopeptidase 2 (MMP2), in the thrombi was measured by immunofluorescence staining. Results. miR-206 overexpression inhibited proliferation, migration, and angiogenesis and promoted apoptosis of EPCs, while miR-206 knockdown exerted an opposite effect on EPC phenotypes. Downregulation of GJA1, the target of miR-206, abolished the influence of miR-206 on EPC phenotypes. Furthermore, silencing of miR-206 suppressed the autophagy of EPCs via upregulating GJA1. miR-206 knockdown repressed thrombus formation, enhanced the homing ability of EPCs to the thrombosis site, and facilitated thrombus resolution in DVT mouse models. Additionally, miR-206 was upregulated while GJA1 was downregulated in vascular tissues of DVT mice. miR-206 knockdown elevated GJA1 expression in vascular tissues of DVT mice. The expression of miR-206 was negatively correlated with that of GJA1 in DVT mice. Conclusion. miR-206 knockdown upregulates GJA1 to inhibit autophagy of EPCs and then promote EPC proliferation, migration, and angiogenesis, thereby enhancing EPC homing to thrombi and facilitating thrombus resolution.

BackgroundThe association of head and cervical posture with malocclusion has been studied for many years. Despite extensively encouraging researches, no conclusive evidence has been reached for clinical application.ObjectiveTo identify the question "Does head and cervical posture correlate to malocclusion?", a systematic review and meta-analysis based on the available studies were carried out (PROSPERO registration number: CRD42022319742).MethodsA search of PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and the grey literature was performed without language restrictions. The study screening, data extraction, risk-of-bias evaluation and methodological quality assessment were performed by two independent investigators. When a disagreement arose, a third author was consulted.Results6 original cross-sectional studies involving 505 participants were included, which were of moderate methodological quality. NL/VER in Class Ⅱ group and NL/CVT in Class Ⅲ group showed significant differences compared to Class Ⅰ group, but no significant differences were observed in most of the variables like NSL/VER, OPT/CVT, OPT/HOR, CVT/HOR, NSL/OPT, NSL/CVT, NL/OPT in Class Ⅱ and Ⅲ groups.ConclusionsThe results suggested that the current research evidence is not sound enough to prove the association of head and cervical posture with sagittal malocclusion. Better controlled design and a larger sample size are required for clarifying this question in future study.

In this study, a novel Vivaldi antenna with dimensions of 100 mm × 85 mm × 1.6 mm, designed for a moisture measurement system, is built to enhance the gain of conventional Vivaldi antennas in the low-frequency band to suit the needs of moisture detection. The fence structure and choke slot are modified to enhance the antenna’s radiation properties in the low-frequency band, and simulation is performed to determine how different structural parameters affect the antenna’s performance. The results show that in the frequency band of 5-6 GHz, the voltage standing-wave ratio (VSWR) of the antenna is less than 2, and the gain at 5.8 GHz reaches 16.2 dBi after installing the lens. Compared with conventional unmodified Vivaldi antennas, the gain at 5.8 GHz increases by approximately 6.11 dBi. The antenna is then processed and measured, and the measured results are in good agreement with the simulated results; hence, the antenna can be widely used in the field of moisture detection.

Novel monomethoxy poly(ethylene glycol) (mPEG) modified hydroxylated tung oil (HTO), denoted as mPEG-HTO-mPEG, was designed and synthesized for drug delivery. mPEG-HTO-mPEG consists of a hydroxylated tung oil center joined by two mPEG blocks via a urethane linkage. The properties of mPEG-HTO-mPEG were affected by the length of the mPEG chain. Three mPEG with different molecular weights were used to prepare mPEG-HTO-mPEG. The obtained three mPEG-HTO-mPEG polymers were characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and gel permeation chromatography (GPC), respectively. Furthermore, the particle sizes of mPEG-HTO-mPEG micelles were evaluated by dynamic light scattering (DLS) and transmission electron microscope (TEM). A critical aggregation concentration (CAC) ranged from 7.28 to 11.73 mg/L depending on the chain length of mPEG. The drug loading and release behaviors of mPEG-HTO-mPEG were investigated using prednisone acetate as a model drug, and results indicated that hydrophobic prednisone acetate could be effectively loaded into mPEG-HTO-mPEG micelles and exhibited a long-term sustained release. Moreover, compared with HTO, mPEG-HTO-mPEG had no obvious cytotoxicity to HeLa and L929 cells. Therefore, monomethoxy poly(ethylene glycol) modified hydroxylated tung oil mPEG-HTO-mPEG may be a promising drug carrier.

A wide variety of organic micropollutants in drinking water pose a serious threat to human health. This study was aimed to reveal the characteristics of organic micropollution profiles in water from a drinking water treatment plant (DWTP) in the Yangtze River Delta, China and investigate the mutagenicity, health risk and disease burden through mixed exposure to micropollutants in water. The presence of organic micropollutants in seven categories in organic extracts (OEs) of water from the DWTP was determined, and Ames test was conducted to test the mutagenic effect of OEs. Meanwhile, health risk of exposure to organic micropollutants in finished water through three exposure routes (ingestion, dermal absorption and inhalation) was assessed with the method proposed by U.S. EPA, and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) were combined to estimate the disease burden of cancer based on the carcinogenic risk (CR) assessment. The results showed that 28 organic micropollutants were detected in the raw and finished water at total concentrations of 967.28 ng/L and 1073.45 ng/L, respectively, of which phthalate esters (PAEs) were the dominant category (95.79% in the raw water and 96.61% in the finished water). Although the results of the Ames test for OEs were negative and the non-carcinogenic hazard index of the organic micropollutants in the finished water was less than 1 in all age groups, the total CR was 2.17 × 10−5, higher than the negligible risk level (1.00 × 10−6). The total DALYs caused by the organic micropollutants in the finished water was 2945.59 person-years, and the average individual DALYs was 2.21 × 10−6 per person-year (ppy), which was 2.21 times the reference risk level (1.00 × 10−6 ppy) defined by the WHO. Exposure to nitrosamines (NAms) was the major contributor to the total CR (92.06%) and average individual DALYs (94.58%). This study demonstrated that despite the negative result of the mutagenicity test with TA98 and TA100 strains, the health risk of exposure to organic micropollutants in drinking water should not be neglected.

Porcine circovirus-associated disease (PCVAD), caused by porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2), has ravaged the pig industry, causing huge economic loss. At present, PCV2b and PCV2d are highly prevalent genotypes worldwide, while in China, in addition to PCV2b and PCV2d, a newly emerged PCV2e genotype detected in the Fujian province has attracted attention, indicating that PCV2 genotypes in China are more abundant. A preliminary study was conducted to better understand the genetic diversity and prevalence of PCV2 genotypes in southern China. We collected 79 random lung samples from pigs with respiratory signs, from 2018 to 2021. We found a PCV2-positivity rate of 29.1%, and frequent co-infections of PCV2 with PCV3, Streptococcus suis (S. suis), and other porcine pathogens. All PCV2-positive samples were sequenced and subjected to whole-genome analysis. Phylogenetic analysis, based on the PCV2 ORF2 gene and complete genomes, found that PCV2 strains identified in this study belonged to genotypes PCV2a (1), PCV2b (6), PCV2d (10), and PCV2e (6). Importantly, PCV2e was identified for the first time in some provinces, including Guangdong and Jiangxi. Additionally, we found two positively selected sites in the ORF2 region, located on the previously reported antigenic epitopes. Moreover, codon 63, one of the positively selected sites, has different types of amino acids in different genotypes. In conclusion, this study shows that PCV2e is an emerging genotype circulating in southern China, which warrants urgent, specific surveillance to aid the development of prevention and control strategies in China.

Abstract With the increasing pressure from population growth and economic development, northern China (NC) faces a grand challenge of water scarcity, which can be further exacerbated by climatic and societal changes. The South‐to‐North Water Diversion (SNWD) project is designed to mitigate the water scarcity in NC. However, few studies have quantified the impact of the SNWD on water scarcity within the context of climatic and societal changes and its potential effects on economic and agricultural food in the region. We used water supply stress index (WaSSI) to quantify water scarcity within the context of environmental change in NC and developed a method to estimate the economic and agricultural impacts of the SNWD. Focuses were put on alleviating the water supply shortage and economic and agricultural benefits for the water‐receiving NC. We find that societal changes, especially economic growth, are the major contributors to water scarcity in NC during 2009–2099. To completely mitigate the water scarcity of NC, at least an additional water supply of 13 billion m3/year (comparable to the annual diversion water by SNWD Central Route) will be necessary. Although SNWD alone cannot provide the full solution to NC's water shortage in next few decades, it can significantly alleviate the water supply stress in NC (particularly Beijing), considerably increasing the agricultural production (more than 115 Tcal/year) and bringing economic benefits (more than 51 billion RMB/year) through supplying industrial and domestic water use. Additionally, the transfer project could have impacts on the ecological environment in the exporting regions.

Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is the most common malignancy in children with distinct characteristics among different subtypes. Although the etiology of ALL has not been fully unveiled, initiation of ALL has been demonstrated to partly depend on genetic factors. As indicated by several genome wide association studies (GWASs) and candidate gene analyses, ARID5B, a member of AT-rich interactive domain (ARID) protein family, is associated with the occurrence and prognosis of ALL. However, the mechanisms by which ARID5B genotype impact on the susceptibility and treatment outcome remain vague. In this review, we outline developments in the understanding of ARID5B in the susceptibility of ALL and its therapeutic perspectives, and summarize the underlying mechanisms based on the limited functional studies, hoping to illustrate the possible mechanisms of ARID5B impact and highlight the potential treatment regimens.

The role and underlying mechanism of exosomes derived from human periodontal ligament stem cells (PDLSC) in osteogenesis are unclear. In the present study, we identified the exosomes derived from PDLSCs and found that osteogenic induction can enhance the osteogenic ability of PDLSC-derived exosomes in promoting the osteogenic differentiation of rat bone marrow stem cells (BMSCs). To investigate the underlying mechanism, we analyzed the exosomal miRNA expression profiles of undifferentiated and osteogenic differentiated PDLSCs by RNA sequencing. The results showed that seventy-two miRNAs were upregulated and thirty-five miRNAs were downregulated after osteogenic induction. The results of Gene Ontology analysis and pathway analysis demonstrated that the target genes of differentially expressed exosomal miRNAs participate in the regulation of a variety of biological processes, such as catalytic activity, protein binding, metabolic processes, cell development, and differentiation, and are enriched in osteogenic differentiation-related pathways, such as MAPK signaling, AMPK signaling, and insulin signaling pathways. Our results reveal for the first time that the exosomal miRNAs derived from osteogenic differentiated PDLSCs may promote the osteogenic differentiation of BMSCs, which provides a basis for further research on the regulatory function of exosomal miRNA of PDLSCs during osteogenesis.

This review article was prompted by a remarkable growth in the number of scientific publications dealing with the use of nanocellulose (especially nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC), cellulose nanocrystals (CNC), and bacterial cellulose (BC)) to enhance the barrier properties and other performance attributes of new generations of packaging products. Recent research has confirmed and extended what is known about oxygen barrier and water vapor transmission performance, strength properties, and the susceptibility of nanocellulose-based films and coatings to the presence of humidity or moisture. Recent research also points to various promising strategies to prepare ecologically-friendly packaging materials, taking advantage of nanocellulose-based layers, to compete in an arena that has long been dominated by synthetic plastics. Some promising approaches entail usage of multiple layers of different materials or additives such as waxes, high-aspect ratio nano-clays, and surface-active compounds in addition to the nanocellulose material. While various high-end applications may be achieved by chemical derivatization or grafting of the nanocellulose, the current trends in research suggest that high-volume implementation will likely incorporate water-based formulations, which may include water-based dispersions or emulsions, depending on the end-uses.

Industry 4.0, the fourth industrial revolution, focuses on intelligent and smart manufacturing. This article investigates a smart design performance measurement approach, which can be utilized to support performance measurement implementation during a collaborative design process. First, we develop a smart product design framework with Industry 4.0 enabling technologies to support key design stages in an iterative fashion. Second, based on this framework, we propose a smart design performance measurement approach to potentially support a smart product design project management via its performance management. Third, we adapt our existing design performance measurement, for a traditional design environment into a smart design environment at its early stage to test its feasibility. This approach features integration of a flexible performance measurement setup, a multi-feedback design performance measurement mechanism and a multiple design performance measurement results presentation which allows the design performance measurement approach to produce flexible and customized operations by connecting design performance measurement with the stage-based design objectives, balancing design performance measurement feedbacks through interoperability between collaborative design team members and providing real-time design performance measurement results to guide design activities. An empirical industrial evaluation case study indicates that the proposed design performance measurement approach can support design team members in improving their collaborative design performance.
