The observations of compact star inspirals from LIGO/Virgo combined with mass and radius measurements from NICER provide a valuable tool to study the highly uncertain equation of state (EOS) of dense matter at the densities characteristic of compact stars. In this work, we constrain the solid states of strange-cluster matter, called strangeon matter, as the putative basic units of the ground state of bulk strong matter using a Bayesian statistical method, incorporating the mass and radius measurements of PSR J0030+0451, PSR J0740+6620, and the recent data for the $1.4\ M_{\odot}$ pulsar PSR J0437-4715. We also include constraints from gravitational wave events GW170817 and GW190814. Under the prior assumption of a finite number of quarks in a strangeon, $N_{\rm q}$, our analysis reveals that current mass-radius measurements favor a larger $N_{\rm q}$. Specifically, the results support the scenario where a strangeon forms a stable bound state with $N_{\rm q}=18$, symmetric in color, flavor, and spin spaces, compared to the minimum $N_{\rm q}$ prior. The comparative analyses of the posterior EOS parameter spaces derived from three-parameter model and two-parameter model demonstrate a consistent prediction under identical observational constraints. In particular, our results indicate that the most probable values of the maximum mass are found to be $3.58^{+0.16}_{-0.12}\ M_{\odot}$ ($3.65^{+0.18}_{-0.16}\ M_{\odot}$) at $90\%$ confidence level for three-parameter (two-parameter) EOS considering the constraints of GW190814. The corresponding radii for $1.4\ M_{\odot}$ and $2.1\ M_{\odot}$ stars are $12.04^{+0.27}_{-0.31}~\rm km$ ($12.16^{+0.26}_{-0.31}~\rm km$) and $13.43^{+0.31}_{-0.32}~\rm km$ ($13.60^{+0.29}_{-0.34}~\rm km$), respectively. We extend the parity doublet model for hadronic matter and study the possible presence of quark matter inside the cores of neutron stars with the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model. Considering the uncertainties of the QCD phase diagram and the location of the critical endpoint, we aim to explore the competition between the chiral phase transition and the deconfinement phase transition systematically, regulated by the vacuum pressure $-B$ in the NJL model. Employing a Maxwell construction, a sharp first-order deconfinement phase transition is implemented combining the parity doublet model for the hadronic phase and the NJL model for the high-energy quark phase. The position of the chiral phase transition is obtained from the NJL model self-consistently. We find stable neutron stars with a quark core within a specific parameter space that satisfies current astronomical observations. The observations suggest a relatively large chiral invariant mass $m_0=600$ MeV in the parity doublet model and a larger split between the chiral and deconfinement phase transitions while assuming the first-order deconfinement phase transition. We investigate the possibility and impacts of a first-order phase transition from hadronic matter to quark matter in neutron stars (NSs) using two specific models: the parity doublet model (PDM) for the hadronic phase and the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) type model for the quark phase. By combining these models, we construct hybrid equations of state (EOSs) that capture the transition between the two phases. We explore the parameter space of both models to identify the conditions under which a first-order phase transition can occur and study its effects on NS properties. We identify the suitable parameter space and constrain the onset density of the first-order phase transition. For $m_0$ = 500 MeV -- the chiral invariant mass in PDM, the phase transition occurs between 1.9$n_0$ and 2.95$n_0$ and ends between 2.1$n_0$ and 3.6$n_0$. Increasing $m_0$ to 600 MeV shifts the phase transition to higher densities, occurring between 2.9$n_0$ and 4.1$n_0$ and ending between 3.4$n_0$ and 4.6$n_0$.

Large uncertainties in the determinations of the equation of state of dense stellar matter allow the intriguing possibility that the bulk quark matter in beta equilibrium might be the true ground state of the matter at zero pressure. And quarks will form Cooper pairs very readily since the dominant interaction between quarks is attractive in some channels. As a result, quark matter will generically exhibit color superconductivity, with the favored pairing pattern at intermediately high densities being two-flavor pairing. In this work, a modified two-flavor NJL-type model is utilized, in which the contact current-current interaction is Fierz-transformed into quark-antiquark interactions and quark-quark interactions, which are directly related to the chiral condensate and diquark condensate, respectively. Under mean-field approximation, the chiral condensate and the diquark condensate are studied on the same footing. The stability and equation of state of quark matter are studied within both two-flavor and (2+1)-flavor Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) models including the vector interactions. With a free parameter $\alpha$, the Lagrangian is constructed by two parts, the original NJL Lagrangian and the Fierz transformation of it, as $L=(1-\alpha) L_{\rm{NJL}}+\alpha L_{\rm{Fierz}}$. We find that there is a possibility for both $ud$ nonstrange and $uds$ strange matter being absolute stable, depending on the interplay of the confinement with quark vector interaction and the exchange interaction channels. The calculated quark star properties can reconcile with the recently measured masses and radii of PSR J0030+0451 and PSR J0740+6620, as well as the tidal deformability of GW170817. Furthermore, the more strongly-interacting quark matter in the nonstrange stars allows a stiffer equation of state and consequently a higher maximum mass ($\sim2.7\, M_{\odot}$) than the strange ones ($\sim2.1\, M_{\odot}$). Strange quark matter, which is composed of u, d, and s quarks, could be the true ground of matter. According to this hypothesis, compact stars may actually be strange quark stars, and there may even be stable strange quark dwarfs and strange quark planets. The detection of the binary neutron star merger event GW170817 provides us new clues on the equation of state of compact stars. In this study, the tidal deformability of strange quark planets and strange quark dwarfs are calculated. It is found that the tidal deformability of strange quark objects is smaller than that of normal matter counterparts. For a typical 0.6 M$_\odot$ compact star, the tidal deformability of a strange dwarf is about 1.4 times less than that of a normal white dwarf. The difference is even more significant between strange quark planets and normal matter planets. Additionally, if the strange quark planet is a bare one (i.e., not covered by a normal matter curst), the tidal deformability will be extremely small, which means bare strange quark planets will hardly be distorted by tidal forces.
