Abstract

The article focuses on the condition of Chinese immigrant women in California during the late 19th century and the early 20th century. Topics include the California Gold Rush which brought Chinese men to California, kidnap of Chinese girls for prostitution, involvement of tongs, notorious criminal enterprises, in sex trade, inferior status of women in Chinese society that resulted in selling daughters, life of women in brothels or as concubines and lack of medical facility.
