Abstract

We report our progress in the high-temperature superconductor (HTS) Josephson junction fabrication process founded on using a focused helium ion beam damaging technique and discuss the expected device performance attainable with the HTS multi-junction device technology. Both the achievable high value of characteristic voltage $V_c=I_cR_N$ of Josephson junctions and the ability to design a large number of arbitrary located Josephson junctions allow narrowing the existing gap in design abilities for LTS and HTS circuits even with using a single YBCO film layer. Abstract

Achieving superconductivity at room temperature could lead to substantial advancements in industry and technology. Recently, a compound known as Cu-doped lead-apatite, Pb10-xCux(PO4)6O (0.9 < x < 1.1), referred to as "LK-99", has been reported to exhibit unusual electrical and magnetic behaviors that appear to resemble a superconducting transition above room temperature. In this work we collected multiphase samples containing the nominal Pb10-xCux(PO4)6O phase (no superconductivity observed in our measured samples), synthesized by three independent groups, and studied their chemical, magnetic, and electrical properties at the microscale to overcome difficulties in bulk measurements. Through the utilization of optical, scanning electron, atomic force, and scanning diamond nitrogen-vacancy microscopy techniques, we are able to establish a link between local magnetic properties and specific microscale chemical phases. Our findings indicate that while the Pb10-xCux(PO4)6O phase seems to have a mixed magnetism contribution, a significant fraction of the diamagnetic response can be attributed to Cu-rich regions (e.g., Cu2S derived from a reagent used in the synthesis). Additionally, our electrical measurements reveal the phenomenon of current path switch and a change in resistance states of Cu2S. 7. Boundedly Rational Decisions on Exploration Versus Exploitation in Alliance Portfolios: Problemistic and Slack Searches Under CEO Overconfidence.

Abstract

How do firms configure exploration versus exploitation in alliance portfolios under the premise of bounded rationality? From the behavioural perspective, problemistic and slack searches can be used as behavioural explanations for their configurations. Furthermore, the boundedly rational decision‐maker's limited cognitive capability in the form of CEO overconfidence also causes the subjective interpretation of information. This study investigates the links between below‐aspiration performance, slack, and firms' boundedly rational decisions under the influence of CEO overconfidence in alliance portfolio configurations. A feasible generalized least‐squares regression is performed to test the model empirically using data from 224 publicly traded high‐tech firms in the United States. We find that below‐aspiration performance and slack both play roles in emphasizing exploration relative to exploitation in alliance portfolios. Further, CEO overconfidence intensifies the positive roles of below‐aspiration levels and slack in preference for exploration alliances. This study contributes to the bounded rationality literature by extending the implications of the behavioural theory of the firm to firms' preference in alliance portfolio configurations in terms of the exploration‐to‐exploitation ratio. Furthermore, our findings deepen the understanding of the role of overconfidence in CEOs' subjective interpretations, thus filling a critical research gap in extant behavioural research. Abstract

Promoting the facility input of care institutions for older people is the key to the development of the care for older people. With a steady increase in the proportion of older people in China, institutional care services are considered as an important tool for older people. Policies such as government bed subsidies and tax incentives are accelerating the development of institutional care services. However, when the care for older people related policy instrument mixes lacks overall comprehensiveness, consistency and balance, the policy instrument mixes may become a “policy mess”, in turn, affecting the development of care institutions for older people. Studies focusing on the combined effects of different characteristics of a policy instrument mix are scarce. To understand how to better use the policy mix to facilitate the care for older people, it is necessary to analyze the characteristics of care policies for older people and its role in the construction of care institutions for older people. Therefore, this study analyzes the impacts of comprehensiveness, consistency, and balance of policy instruments on the facility input of care institutions for older people. An empirical analysis of related policies from 2011 to 2019 in China shows that a synergetic effect exists between the policy instrument mix and the facility input of care institutions for older people. This study points that the comprehensiveness and consistency of the policy instrument mix positively affect the facility input of care institutions for older people, while the impact of balance is not significant. It not only provides feasible policy suggestions for China's policy-making departments to optimize the care for older people related policies, but also helps care institutions for older people further understand the characteristics of policy portfolios and realize sustainable development.

Abstract

Industry-university-research (IUR) alliance portfolio configurations are vital for small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Our study extends the knowledge-based view and transaction cost theory on SMEs' IUR alliance portfolio configurations and their deployment in different institutional conditions. We analyze these IUR alliance portfolio configurations in a panel data of listed SMEs in China's manufacturing industry. Our findings indicate that both breadth and depth dimensions of these IUR alliance portfolio configurations have an inverted U-shaped association with SMEs' innovation performance. Moreover, developed institutional conditions, characterized by high degrees of regional marketization, strengthen the positive effect of both breadth and depth, thereby, intensifying the inverted U-shaped relationship. Consequently, our evidence contributes to the literature on IUR alliances and firm innovation performance, suggesting that medium levels of IUR alliance portfolio breadth and depth in SMEs result in higher firm innovation performance, thereby, offering several useful insights for both SME managers and policymakers in emerging economies.
