The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) of 2015 requires that K-12 educational agencies invest federal education funds in evidence-based practices. We estimated what percentage of Title I funds at a large school district are invested in practices supported by a single study meeting one of the top three tiers of evidence as defined by ESSA. Over 95% met this bar. When studies about each practice from four research repositories were considered, the percentage of funds invested in practices with overall positive or mostly positive ratings fell below 60%. These proportions did not change substantially after the introduction of ESSA.

Abstract Objective To analyzed the safety and efficacy of percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) in lateral decubitus position and prone position for upper ureteral calculi. Methods Databases including PubMed, Springer, ScienceDirect, Wiley Online Library, CNKI, CSPD and VIP were searched for clinical controlled studies involved with lateral decubitus position and prone position PCNL from their establishment to November 2023.Studies were enrolled according to inclusion and exclusion criteria. the dates were compared by Review Manager 5.4 software. Results seven studies were eligible, including 807 cases. The Meta-analysis showed that, blood loss and perioperative complication rate of lateral decubitus position PCNL group were significantly different from those of the prone position PCNL group (P 0.05).Conclusions The lateral decubitus position can reduce blood loss and perioperative complication rate. The lateral decubitus position PCNL is safe and effective for upper ureteral calculi which was deserved clinical popularizing use.

Objective: We present mosaic distal 13q duplication due to mosaic unbalanced translocation 46,XY,der(14)t(13;14)(q32.2;p13)/46,XY at amniocentesis in a pregnancy associated with a favorable fetal outcome. Case report: A 37-year-old, gravida 2, para 0, woman underwent amniocentesis at 17 weeks of gestation because of advanced maternal age. Amniocentesis revealed a karyotype of 46,XY, add(14) (p13)[17]/46,XY[13] (56.6% mosaicism). Array comparative genomic hybridization (aCGH) analysis on the DNA extracted from cultured amniocytes revealed arr 13q32.2q34 × 2∼3, consistent with 45% mosaicism for distal 13q duplication. Repeat amniocentesis at 24 weeks of gestation revealed a karyotype of 46,XY,der(14)t(13;14)(q32.2;p13)[14]/46,XY[16] (46.6% mosaicism). The parental karyotypes were normal. aCGH analysis on the DNA extracted from uncultured amniocytes revealed arr 13q32.2q34 × 2.38, consistent with 30–40% mosaicism for distal 13q duplication. Interphase fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) analysis on uncultured amniocytes detected 22.8% (23/101 cells) mosaicism for distal 13q duplication. Prenatal ultrasound findings were unremarkable. At 39 weeks of gestation, a 3616-g phenotypically normal baby was delivered. The karyotypes of cord blood, umbilical cord and placenta were 46,XY,der(14)t(13;14)(q32.2;p13)[20]/46,XY[20] (50% mosaicism), 46,XY,der(14)t(13;14)(q32.2;p13)[14]/46,XY[26] (35% mosaicism) and 46,XY (40/40 cells) (0% mosaicism), respectively. When follow-ups at the age of 4½ months and the age of one year, the peripheral blood had the karyotype of 46,XY,der(14)t(13;14)(q32.2;p13)[18]/46,XY[22] (45% mosaicism). Interphase FISH analysis on buccal mucosal cells at the age of 4½ months revealed 2.7% (3/110 cells) mosaicism for distal 13q duplication, compared with 1% (1/100 cells) in the normal control. The neonate was normal in phenotype and development. Conclusions: Mosaic unbalanced translocation at amniocentesis can be associated with a favorable fetal outcome, perinatal progressive decrease of the aneuploid cell line and cytogenetic discrepancy between cultured amniocytes and uncultured amniocytes.

Objective: We present low-level mosaic trisomy 14 at amniocentesis. Case report: A 37-year-old, gravida 2, para 1, woman underwent amniocentesis at 18 weeks of gestation because of advanced maternal age. This pregnancy was conceived by in vitro fertilization and embryo transfer (IVF-ET). Amniocentesis revealed a karyotype of 47,XX,+14 [4]/46,XX [27], consistent with 12.9% mosaicism for trisomy 14. Simultaneous array comparative genomic hybridization (aCGH) analysis on the DNA extracted from uncultured amniocytes revealed the result of arr (1–22, X) × 2 with no genomic imbalance. Prenatal ultrasound findings were unremarkable. She was referred for genetic counseling at 21 weeks of gestation and was offered expanded non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) which was positive for trisomy 14. At 24 weeks of gestation, she underwent repeat amniocentesis which revealed a karyotype of 47,XX,+14 [2]/46,XX [26], consistent with 7% mosaicism for trisomy 14. The parental karyotypes were normal. Simultaneous aCGH analysis on the DNA extracted from uncultured amniocytes revealed no genomic imbalance. Polymorphic marker analysis excluded uniparental disomy (UPD) 14. Interphase fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) analysis on 104 uncultured amniocytes detected no trisomy 14 cell. At 35 weeks of gestation, a 2315-g phenotypically normal baby was delivered. The umbilical cord and placenta had the karyotype of 46, XX (40/40 cells). aCGH analysis on the DNA extracted from peripheral blood and buccal mucosal cells at the age of three months revealed no genomic imbalance. The neonate was normal in phenotype and development during postnatal follow-ups. Conclusions: Low-level mosaic trisomy 14 at amniocentesis can be associated with cytogenetic discrepancy between cultured amniocytes and uncultured amniocytes, perinatal progressive decrease of the trisomy 14 cell line and a favorable fetal outcome.

Background: Real-world vaccine effectiveness following the third dose of vaccination against SARS-CoV-2 remains less investigated among people with HIV (PWH). Methods: PWH receiving the third dose of BNT162b2 and mRNA-1273 (either 50- or 100-μg) were enrolled. Participants were followed for 180 days until the fourth dose of COVID-19 vaccination, SARS-CoV-2 infection, seroconversion of anti-nucleocapsid IgG, death, or loss to follow-up. Anti-spike IgG was determined every 1–3 months. Results: Of 1427 participants undergoing the third-dose COVID-19 vaccination, 632 (44.3%) received 100-μg mRNA-1273, 467 (32.8%) 50-μg mRNA-1273, and 328 (23.0%) BNT162b2 vaccine and the respective rate of SARS-CoV-2 infection or seroconversion of anti-nucleocapsid IgG was 246.1, 280.8 and 245.2 per 1000 person-months of follow-up (log-rank test, p = 0.28). Factors associated with achieving anti-S IgG titers >1047 BAU/mL included CD4 count 200 copies/mL (aOR, 0.27; 95% CI, 0.09–0.80), having achieved anti-spike IgG >141 BAU/mL within 3 months after primary vaccination (aOR, 3.69; 95% CI, 2.68–5.07), receiving BNT162b2 vaccine as the third dose (aOR, 0.20; 95% CI, 0.10–0.41; reference, 100-μg mRNA-1273), and having previously received two doses of mRNA vaccine in primary vaccination (aOR, 2.46; 95% CI, 1,75-3.45; reference, no exposure to mRNA vaccine). Conclusions: PWH receiving different types of the third dose of COVID-19 vaccine showed similar vaccine effectiveness against SARS-CoV-2 infection. An additional dose with 100-μg mRNA-1273 could generate a higher antibody response than with 50-μg mRNA-1273 and BNT162b2 vaccine.

Background: Mycoplasma genitalium is an emerging etiology of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) with increasing resistance to antimicrobials. Surveillance on the epidemiology of M. genitalium infection and antimicrobial resistance is warranted. Methods: Between September 2021 and August 2023, people with HIV (PWH) and people without HIV (PWoH) at risk of STIs were screened for M. genitalium infection using a multiplex polymerase-chain-reaction assay of specimens collected from the rectum, urethra, oral cavity, and vagina. The prevalences of resistance-associated mutations (RAMs) of M. genitalium to fluoroquinolones, macrolides, and tetracycline were investigated. Results: During the 2-year study period, 1021 participants were enrolled, including 531 PWH and 490 PWoH. Overall, 83 (8.1%) and 34 (7.6%) participants had M. genitalium infection at baseline and during follow-up, respectively, with the rectum being the most common site of detection (61.5%). With the first course of antimicrobial treatment, 27 of 63 (42.9%) participants with M. genitalium infection were cured during follow-up, including 24 of 58 (41.4%) who received doxycycline monotherapy. The prevalence of RAMs to macrolides, fluoroquinolones, and tetracyclines at baseline were 24.3%, 22.4%, and 7.9%, respectively. In the multi-attribute decision-making under the probabilistic dual hesitation fuzzy environment, the decision-making process generally does not account for the group pressure and polarization the decision-making experts received in the discussion. To solve this problem, a probabilistic discriminative heterogeneous fuzzy sets-topological discriminative inter-objective method (PDHFSs-TODIM) multi-attribute group decision-making algorithm considering group pressure and group polarization is proposed. Firstly, a modified formula of decision-making information accounting for group pressure is proposed, which effectively weakens the influence of group pressure on experts' decision-making information; Then, a decision model considering the phenomenon of group polarization is built. This model fully account for experts' subjectivity and allows them to discuss and revise their decisions. The model improves the confidence of decision-making through dynamic decision-making weight allocation and constrains the polarization effect of the group through the group polarization threshold. Further, by inputting the calculated decision data into TODIM algorithm, the final decision result can be derived. The proposed algorithm has been applied to the case analysis of comprehensive performance evaluation of energy storage batteries. Introduction: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most prevalent cardiac arrhythmia, and it significantly increases the risk of cardiovascular complications and morbidity, even with appropriate treatment. Tissue remodeling has been a significant topic, while its systematic transcriptional signature remains unclear in AF. Objectives: Our study aims to systematically investigate the molecular characteristics of AF at the cellular-level. Methods: We conducted single-nuclei RNA-sequencig (snRNA-seq) analysis using nuclei isolated from the left atrial appendage (LAA) of AF patients and sinus rhythm. Pathological staining was performed to validate the key findings of snRNA-seq. Results: A total of 30 cell subtypes were identified among 80, 592 nuclei. Within the LAA of AF, we observed a specific subtype of dedifferentiated cardiomyocytes (CMs) characterized by reduced expression of cardiac contractile proteins (TTN and TRDN) and heightened expression of extracellular-matrix related genes (COL1A2 and FBN1). Transcription factor prediction analysis revealed that gene expression patterns in dedifferentiated CMs were primarily regulated by CEBPG and GISLI. Additionally, we identified a distinct subtype of endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) demonstrating elevated expression of PROM1 and KDR, a population decreased within the LAA of AF. Epicardial adipocytes disclosed a reduced release of the anti-inflammatory and anti-fibrotic factor PRG4, and an augmented secretion of VEGF signals targeting CMs. Additionally, we noted accumulation of M2-like macrophages and CD8+ T cells with high pro-inflammatory score in LAA of AF. Furthermore, the analysis of intercellular communication revealed specific pathways related to AF, such as inflammation, extracellular matrix, and vascular remodeling signals. Conclusions: This study has discovered the presence of dedifferentiated CMs, a decrease in endothelial progenitor cells, a shift in the secretion profile of adipocytes, and an amplified inflammatory response in AF. These findings could offer crucial insights for future research on AF and serve as valuable references for investigating novel therapeutic approaches for AF.

Cardiovascular disease is a significant cause of death in humans. Various models are necessary for the study of cardiovascular diseases, but once cellular and animal models have some defects, such as insufficient fidelity. As a new technology, organoid has certain advantages and has been used in many applications in the study of cardiovascular diseases. This article aims to summarize the application of organoid platforms in cardiovascular diseases, including organoid construction schemes, modeling, and application of cardiovascular organoids. Advances in cardiovascular organoid research have provided many models for different cardiovascular diseases in a variety of areas, including myocardium, blood vessels, and valves. Physiological and pathological models of different diseases, drug research models, and methods for evaluating and promoting the maturation of different kinds of organ tissues are provided for various cardiovascular diseases, including cardiomyopathy, myocardial infarction, and atherosclerosis. This article provides a comprehensive overview of the latest research progress in cardiovascular organ tissues, including construction protocols for cardiovascular organoid tissues and their evaluation system, different types of disease models, and applications of cardiovascular organoid models in various studies. The problems and possible solutions in organoid development are summarized.

Abstract The Islamist group ISIS has been particularly successful at recruiting Westerners as terrorists. A hypothesized explanation is their simultaneous use of two types of propaganda: Heroic narratives, emphasizing individual glory, alongside Social narratives, which emphasize oppression against Islamic communities. In the current study, functional MRI was used to measure brain responses to short ISIS propaganda videos distributed online. Participants were shown 4 Heroic and 4 Social videos categorized as such by another independent group of subjects. Persuasiveness was measured using post-scan predictions of recruitment effectiveness. Inter-subject correlation (ISC) was used to measure commonality of brain activity time courses across individuals. ISCs in ventral striatum predicted rated persuasiveness for Heroic videos, while ISCs in mentalizing and default networks, especially in dmPFC, predicted rated persuasiveness for Social videos. This work builds on past findings that engagement of the reward circuit and of mentalizing brain regions predicts preferences and persuasion. The observed dissociation as a function of stimulus type is novel, as is the finding that intersubject synchrony in ventral striatum predicts rated persuasiveness. These exploratory results identify possible neural mechanisms by which political extremists successfully recruit prospective members and specifically support the hypothesized distinction between Heroic and Social narratives for ISIS propaganda.

Background: The RECOVERY trial demonstrated that the use of dexamethasone is associated with a 36% lower 28-day mortality in hospitalized patients with COVID-19 on invasive mechanical ventilation. Nevertheless, the optimal timing to start dexamethasone remains uncertain. Methods: We conducted a quasi-experimental study at National Taiwan University Hospital (Taipei, Taiwan) using propensity score matching to simulate a randomized controlled trial to receive or not to receive early dexamethasone (6 mg/day) during the first 7 days following the onset of symptoms. Treatment was standard protocol-based, except for the timing to start dexamethasone, which was left to physicians’ decision. The primary outcome is 28-day mortality. Secondary outcomes include secondary infection within 60 days and fulfilling the criteria of de-isolation within 20 days. Results: A total of 377 patients with COVID-19 were enrolled. Early dexamethasone did not decrease 28-day mortality in all patients (adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 1.03; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.97–1.10) or in patients who required O2 for severe/critical disease at admission (aOR, 1.05; 95%CI, 0.94–1.18); but is associated with a 24% increase in superinfection in all patients (aOR, 1.24; 95% CI, 1.12–1.37) and a 23% increase in superinfection in patients of O2 for several/critical disease at admission (aOR, 1.23; 95% CI, 1.02–1.47). Moreover, early dexamethasone is associated with a 42% increase in likelihood of delayed clearance of SARS-CoV-2 virus (adjusted hazard ratio, 1.42; 95% CI, 1.01–1.98). Conclusion: An early start of dexamethasone (within 7 days after the onset of symptoms) could be harmful to hospitalized patients with COVID-19.

Heat performance and internal pressure loss are important reference standards in solar air heaters (SAH). In order to solve the problem of too large a pressure loss in SAH, an innovative SAH with sinusoidal baffles was proposed on the basis of folded baffle and semi-circular baffle air heaters. A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation calculation was performed for the SAH with sinusoidal baffles, and the relevant parameters, such as the heat collection efficiency and the pressure loss, were analyzed. The results showed that the sinusoidal baffle had a better heat collection performance and a smaller pressure loss compared to the folded baffle and the semi-circular baffle. A sinusoidal baffle can further improve the thermal performance of SAH. The simulation calculation of wave lengths for sinusoidal baffles revealed that when the wavelength value was 200 mm, the SAH had the best heat collection effect, and the heat collection efficiency was 64.49%. On the basis of determining the wavelength, the wave height of the sinusoidal baffle was studied. When the wave height was 30 mm, the minimum pressure loss of the SAH was 17.51 Pa, and the maximum heat collection efficiency was 64.91%. Analyses and research on the Reynolds number of the air inlet showed that as the Reynolds number increased, the collection efficiency and internal pressure loss gradually increased, while the outlet temperature decreased. The curve fitting of the imported Reynolds number and the pressure loss showed that the accuracy of pressure loss fitting curve is 0.997. Research on a double-layer SAH showed that the cross different inlet (CDI) had the best collector performance. This research has a high practicality and can provide a theoretical basis for winter air heating.

Abstract The electron/ion density/temperature and ion velocities observed by the ROCSAT-1 and DEMETER satellites are used to examine the daytime wavenumber-4 (WN4) feature in the equatorial/low latitude ionosphere during various months and solar activity levels of 1999–2010. A moving median process has been employed to isolate WN4 features and calculate their amplitudes, while the upward ion drift is used to estimate electric fields. The ROCSAT-1 and DEMETER ion density, ion temperature, and ion velocity generally yield prominent WN4 features over the center of Pacific Ocean, the west side of South America, the center of the Atlantic Ocean, and Southern India. The correlation coefficient between the deviation of ion density and upward ion drift is significant during high solar activity of 1999–2004, while it approaches to zero during low solar activity of 2004–2010. This confirms that the longitudinal variation of the upward ion drift is essential during high solar activity, and the associated amplitude of dynamo eastward electric field is in the range of 0.10–0.14 mV/m, which is 15–19% of daily dynamo electric field. By contrast, the deviation of the ion density and the northward field-aligned ion flow show a clear anti-correlation which yields a maximum coefficient in August during low solar activity but no correlation during high solar activity. These indicate that the longitudinal variation of the meridional field-aligned ion flow could play an important role during low solar activity, and its amplitude is in the range of 10.44–13.91 m/s, which is 10–13% of the ambient ion flows.

Traumatic intervertebral disc herniation is more common in the cervical spine than in the lumbar spine. Traumatic lumbar disc herniation (LDH) had the same symptoms as degenerative LDH including low-back pain and nerve root radiculopathy. Many reports are showing that herniated discs can regress spontaneously, therefore, improving neurologic symptoms. The exact mechanism of spontaneous herniated disc regression remains unclear. Traumatic LDH treatment principle should be the same as degenerative LDH. We report a case of traumatic LDH with spontaneous regression and discuss the possible mechanisms of spontaneous lumbar herniation disc regression.

Abstract Background High levels of neutrophil extracellular trap (NET) formation or NETosis and autoantibodies are related to poor prognosis and disease severity of COVID-19 patients. Human angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) cross-reactive anti-severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 spike protein receptor-binding domain (SARS-CoV-2 RBD) antibodies (CR Abs) have been reported as one of the sources of anti-ACE2 autoantibodies. However, the pathological implications of CR Abs in NET formation remain unknown. Methods In this study, we first assessed the presence of CR Abs in the sera of COVID-19 patients with different severity by serological analysis. Sera and purified IgG from CR Abs positive COVID-19 patients as well as a mouse monoclonal Ab (mAb 127) that can recognize both ACE2 and the RBD were tested for their influence on NETosis and the possible mechanisms involved were studied. Results An association between CR Abs levels and the severity of COVID-19 in 120 patients was found. The CR Abs-positive sera and IgG from severe COVID-19 patients and mAb 127 significantly activated human leukocytes and triggered NETosis, in the presence of RBD. This NETosis, triggered by the coexistence of CR Abs and RBD, activated thrombus-related cells but was abolished when the interaction between CR Abs and ACE2 or Fc receptors was disrupted. We also revealed that CR Abs-induced NETosis was suppressed in the presence of recombinant ACE2 or the Src family kinase inhibitor, dasatinib. Furthermore, we found that COVID-19 vaccination not only reduced COVID-19 severity but also prevented the production of CR Abs after SARS-CoV-2 infection. Conclusions Our findings provide possible pathogenic effects of CR Abs in exacerbating COVID-19 by enhancing NETosis, highlighting ACE2 and dasatinib as potential treatments, and supporting the benefit of vaccination in reducing disease severity and CR Abs production in COVID-19 patients.

Abstract Aging is a global challenge, marked in the lungs by function decline and structural disorders, which affects the health of the elderly population. To explore anti-aging strategies, we develop a dynamic atlas covering 45 cell types in human lungs, spanning from embryonic development to aging. We aim to apply the discoveries of lung’s development to address aging-related issues. We observe that both epithelial and immune cells undergo a process of acquisition and loss of essential function as they transition from development to aging. During aging, we identify cellular phenotypic alternations that result in reduced pulmonary compliance and compromised immune homeostasis. Furthermore, we find a distinctive expression pattern of the ferritin light chain (FTL) gene, which increases during development but decreases in various types of lung cells during the aging process.

Abstract Introduction Angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) and AXL tyrosine kinase receptor are known to be involved in the SARS-CoV-2 entry of the host cell. Therefore, targeting ACE2 and AXL should be an effective strategy to inhibit virus entry into cells. However, developing agents that can simultaneously target ACE2 and AXL remains a formidable task. The natural compound quercetin has been shown to inhibit AXL expression. Materials and methods In this study, we employed PLGA nanoparticles to prepare nanoparticles encapsulated with quercetin, coated with ACE2-containing cell membranes, or encapsulated with quercetin and then coated with ACE-2-containing cell membranes. These nanoparticles were tested for their abilities to neutralize or inhibit viral infection. Results Our data showed that nanoparticles encapsulated with quercetin and then coated with ACE2-containing cell membrane inhibited the expression of AXL without causing cytotoxic activity. Nanoparticles incorporated with both quercetin and ACE2-containing cell membrane were found to be able to neutralize pseudo virus infection and were more effective than free quercetin and nanoparticles encapsulated with quercetin at inhibition of pseudo virus and SARS-CoV-2 infection. Conclusions We have shown that the biomimetic nanoparticles incorporated with both ACE-2 membrane and quercetin showed the most antiviral activity and may be further explored for clinical application.

Abstract Based on a total of 1,590 listed non-financial firms on the Taiwan Stock Exchange and the Taipei Exchange (formerly the Over The Counter securities market) covering the period of 2007~2020, this study examines whether firm's performance on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is affected by corporate board gender diversity. Based on the Upper Echelons Theory, the Agency Theory and the Resource Dependence Theory, increasing the number of female director to achieve higher level of gender diversity brings forth traits such as compassion, kindness, helpfulness, empathy, interpersonal sensitivity, a willingness to nurture, and a greater concern for others' well-being. These traits help firms form policies that prioritize stakeholders' welfare. Moreover, board gender diversity corresponds to a more diverse and broad background, understanding and experience of business operations, enabling firms to better understand where the key interest groups they face are and what they value. This allows firms to make more effective and better-performing decision in CSR. Through correlation analysis and multiple regression estimation, the principal outcome shows that greater degree of board gender diversity is associated with better CSR performance, confirming the hypothesis that a more gender diversified board enhances the efficiency of monitoring and advising function of board and then forming corporate strategies and implementations toward a better stakeholders’ management.

Central noradrenergic (NA) neurons are key constituents of the respiratory homeostatic network. NA dysfunction is implicated in several developmental respiratory disorders including Congenital Central Hyperventilation Syndrome (CCHS), Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), and Rett Syndrome. The current unchallenged paradigm in the field, supported by multiple studies, is that glutamate co-transmission in subsets of central NA neurons plays a role in breathing control. If true, NA-glutamate co-transmission may also be mechanistically important in respiratory disorders. However, the requirement of NA-derived glutamate in breathing has not been directly tested and the extent of glutamate co-transmission in the central NA system remains uncharacterized. Therefore, we fully characterized the cumulative fate maps and acute adult expression patterns of all three vesicular glutamate transporters (Slc17a7 (Vglut1), Slc17a6 (Vglut2), and Slc17a8 (Vglut3)) in NA neurons, identifying a novel, dynamic expression pattern for Vglut2 and an undescribed co-expression domain for Vglut3 in the NA system. In contrast to our initial hypothesis that NA-derived glutamate is required to breathing, our functional studies showed that loss of Vglut2 throughout the NA system failed to alter breathing or metabolism under room air, hypercapnia, or hypoxia in unrestrained and unanesthetized mice. These data demonstrate that Vglut2-based glutamatergic signaling within the central NA system is not required for normal baseline breathing and hypercapnic, hypoxic chemosensory reflexes. These outcomes challenge the current understanding of central NA neurons in the control of breathing and suggests that glutamate may not be a critical target to understand NA neuron dysfunction in respiratory diseases.

IntroductionPoor graft function (PGF), characterized by myelosuppression, represents a significant challenge following allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) with human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) being established as a risk factor for PGF. However, the underlying mechanism remains unclear. Bone marrow endothelial progenitor cells (BM-EPCs) play an important role in supporting hematopoiesis and their dysfunction contributes to PGF development. We aim to explore the effects of CMV on BM-EPCs and its underlying mechanism.MethodsWe investigated the compromised functionality of EPCs derived from individuals diagnosed with HCMV viremia accompanied by PGF, as well as after infected by HCMV AD 169 strain in vitro, characterized by decreased cell proliferation, tube formation, migration and hematopoietic support, and increased apoptosis and secretion of TGF-β1.ResultsWe demonstrated that HCMV-induced TGF-β1 secretion by BM-EPCs played a dominant role in hematopoiesis suppression in vitro experiment. Moreover, HCMV down-regulates Vitamin D receptor (VDR) and subsequently activates p38 MAPK pathway to promote TGF-β1 secretion by BM-EPCs.DiscussionHCMV could infect BM-EPCs and lead to their dysfunction. The secretion of TGF-β1 by BM-EPCs is enhanced by CMV through the activation of p38 MAPK via a VDR-dependent mechanism, ultimately leading to compromised support for hematopoietic progenitors by BM EPCs, which May significantly contribute to the pathogenesis of PGF following allo-HSCT and provide innovative therapeutic strategies targeting PGF.

Background In direct oral anticoagulant (DOAC) users with stroke due to large artery occlusion, endovascular thrombectomy is an effective treatment when intravenous thrombolytic therapy is unsuitable. The purpose of this study is to investigate the association between emergent DOAC levels and endovascular thrombectomy outcomes. Methods Participants with atrial fibrillation, who had a premorbid modified Rankin Scale score of ≤3 and had undergone endovascular thrombectomy for acute stroke, were enrolled. Drug levels upon hospital arrival were measured in the prestroke DOAC users. Head noncontrast computed tomography and computed tomographic angiography images were used to quantify thrombus permeability. The primary outcome was functional independence at 3 months (modified Rankin Scale 0–2 or a return to premorbid status for patients with a premorbid modified Rankin Scale of 3). Results The study included 250 patients (antithrombotic agent nonusers, 42.0%; oral anticoagulant users, 34.0%; and antiplatelet users, 24.0%). The primary outcomes did not differ among the 3 groups. We successfully synthesized three-layered photocatalysts by modifying Bi nanoparticles on TiO2/BiVO4 bilayer composite films through a sol-gel process and sputtering. When exposed to ambient air, the surface of the prepared Bi nanoparticles oxidizes to form an amorphous ultra-thin Bi2O3 out layer. Under light exposure, this layer is reduced to metallic Bi, thanks to the band alignment between the Bi nanoparticles and TiO2/BiVO4 Z-scheme composite. The addition of Bi nanoparticles in the composite films improves visible-light absorption by the surface plasmon resonance (SPR), which contributes to the hot electron and enhances the photocatalytic characteristics. By constructing effective TiO2/BiVO4 Z-scheme heterostructures to facilitate photoinduced electron-hole pair separation and prevent recombination, Bi nanoparticles can efficiently capture photons and enhance the photocatalytic efficiency of semiconductors through the SPR effect. Optimizing the content of Bi nanoparticles decorated on the TiO2/BiVO4 Z-scheme composite film is a promising approach for designing a highly efficient photocatalyst, as evidenced by the performance of photoelectrochemical properties and RhB photodegradation ability.

Our research unveils the synthesis of BiVO4-Bi2O3 triangular sheet composites, demonstrating their impact on charge separation ability under visible light irradiation. We found that composites with optimal BiVO4 content exhibit enhanced photocurrent density, reduced interfacial resistance, prolonged carrier life, increased surface active sites, improved charge transfer efficiency, and carrier concentration. The proposed Z-scheme mechanism appears to govern this composite system’s efficient separation of photogenerated carriers. These findings underscore the potential of BiVO4-Bi2O3 triangular sheet composites in adjusting photosensitivity and enhancing the photocatalytic ability of β-Bi2O3 triangular sheets, opening up new avenues for research in the application of the sustainable environment field.

ObjectiveTo determine the function of miR-125a-5p in laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC), its correlation with radiation sensitivity, and the underlying regulatory mechanism.Materials and methodsWe conducted the analysis on the correlation between miR-125a-5p and head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) using data obtained from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA). The putative gene targeted by miR-125a-5p has been identified as HK2, while the expression levels of miR-125a-5p and HK2 were measured in laryngeal cancer tissues and cells using RT-PCR. MiR-125a-5p and HK2 were introduced into the lentiviral vector and the vector was used to transfect AMC-HN-8 cells. The roles of miR-125a-5p and HK2 in LSCC and on radiosensitivity were determined by evaluating cell growth, examining colony formation, analyzing flow cytometry, and utilizing the single hit multi-target model. Western blotting was used to measure H2AX and rH2AX levels in the DNA damage response (DDR) pathway. The validation of the interaction between miR-125a-5p and HK2 was conducted through the dual-luciferase assay. To further confirm the association between miR-125a-5p and HK2, as well as its influence on radiosensitivity, rescue experiments were performed.ResultsThe expression of miR-125a-5p is downregulated in LSCC, while upregulating its expression could suppress cell growth, induce apoptosis, and enhance radiosensitivity. Additionally, HK2 exhibited high expression in LSCC and the biological function was opposite to miR-125a-5p. Western blotting analysis revealed that miR-125a-5p increased rH2AX levels and decreased H2AX levels, conversely, HK2 had the opposite effect on miR-125a-5p. These findings suggested that HK2 may serve as the target gene of miR-125a-5p. The double luciferase assay confirmed the binding of HK2 to miR-125a-5p, and rescue trials confirmed the role of miR-125a-5p in regulating the effects and radiation sensitivity of LSCC by targeting HK2 via the DDR pathway.ConclusionBy targeting HK2 and impacting the DDR pathway, miR-125a-5p has been found to inhibit cellular proliferation, enhance apoptosis, and heighten radiosensitivity in LSCC.

With the evolution of advanced integrated circuit (IC) packaging technology, the use of experiments to identify package performance and life expectation will take a significant amount of time and cost to finish the job. To reduce the cost of research and testing, predictive analyses of reliability and performance using simulation tools have become a feasible approach for the IC assembly industry. Therefore, this study utilized Moldex3D molding simulation software to analyze very thin profile fine pitch ball grid array (VFBGA) packages and established a numerical analysis procedure from the molding and curing process, the post-mold cure (PMC) process, to a thermal cycling test (TCT) to predict the amount of package warpage during processing and reliability after TCT.The results showed that the warpage trends of both experiments and simulations during the same temperature ramping process were similar. In the thermal cycling analysis, potential failure locations were found to be at the copper pillars and redistribution layer (RDL), where the maximum Von Mises stress occurred at the lowest temperature (−65 °C). The fatigue life model, Coffin–Manson model, was used to calculate the potential fatigue life at the two locations, resulting in 1689 cycles (copper pillars) and 9706 cycles (RDL L1).

Air-to-air membrane-energy exchangers have been widely used in green buildings as passive energy-recovery technologies for energy conservation and carbon reduction. An air-to-air membrane-energy exchanger conserves building energy by forcing the indoor exhaust air and unconditioned fresh air to exchange heat and moisture. As a critical performance indicator, the energy-exchange efficiency is primarily determined by the core. To improve energy-saving performance, many studies have been conducted to analyze and enhance the efficiency of air-to-air membrane-energy exchanger cores by manufacturing, testing, modeling, and comparing different cores. However, few studies have investigated the uncertainty introduced by the manufacturing and testing processes (most related research only studied the uncertainty of the sensible efficiency), which means that some positive results of those controlled trials are possibly owing to the manufacturing tolerance or testing errors, rather than real technical progress. This study addresses this problem by quantifying the efficiency uncertainty caused by manufacturing and testing processes. Three cores were produced using the same manufacturing process and materials, followed by identical experimental tests on their sensible, latent, and enthalpy efficiencies. Comparison results suggest that even when all variables are controlled, the differential enthalpy efficiency of two “identical” cores still vary from 0 % to 2 %. Variance of repetitive testing results of a certain core can afford an enthalpy efficiency of 4 % owing to a non-ideal experimental procedure. When manufacturing tolerances and experimental errors are considered simultaneously, the differential sensible efficiency among multiple “identical” cores is within 0–5%, whereas latent efficiency data in winter shows a significant variation of 5–10 % for “identical” cores. The contributions and conclusions of this study are as follows. The efficiency uncertainty caused by manufacturing and testing processes is non-negligible, particularly in latent efficiency. This phenomenon could alert researchers and engineers in this field to conduct repetitive manufacturing and testing while trying to modify/test/compare air-to-air membrane-energy exchanger cores. Because this study is based on a limited number of cores, the quantitative results of this study should be considered a non-universal reference, and a systematic benchmark must be established in the future.
