Search

Recent advances in van der Waals heterostructures have opened the new frontier of moir\'{e} physics, whereby tuning the interlayer twist angle or adjusting lattice parameter mismatch have led to a plethora of exotic phenomena such as unconventional superconductivity and fractional quantum spin Hall effect. We extend the concept of moir\'{e} engineering to materials that host incommensurate orders, where we discovered a long-period, thermally-hysteretic moir\'{e} superlattice in a layered charge density wave (CDW) compound, EuTe$_\text{4}$. Using high-momentum-resolution X-ray diffraction performed on ultrathin flakes, we found two coexisting, incommensurate CDWs with slightly mismatched in-plane wavevectors. The interaction between these two CDWs leads to their joint commensuration with the high-symmetry lattice as well as a large moir\'{e} superstructure with an in-plane period of 13.6~nm. Due to different out-of-plane orders of the incommensurate CDWs, the moir\'{e} superstructure exhibits a clear thermal hysteresis, accounting for the large hysteresis observed in electrical resistivity and numerous metastable states induced by light or electrical pulses. Our findings pave the way for a new development in moir\'{e} engineering based on an incommensurate lattice. Symmetry breaking in a layered superconductor with Ising spin-orbit coupling has offered an opportunity to realize unconventional superconductivity. To be more specific, orbital Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state, exhibiting layer-dependent finite-momentum pairing, may emerge in transition metal dichalcogenides materials (TMDC) in the presence of an in-plane magnetic field. Orbital FFLO state can be more robust against the magnetic field than the conventional superconducting state with zero-momentum pairing. This feature renders its potential in field resilient superconducting functionality. Although, orbital FFLO state has been reported in NbSe2 and MoS2, it is not yet clear if orbital FFLO state can be a general feature of TMDC superconductor. Here, we report the observation of orbital FFLO state in 2H-NbS2 flakes and its dependence on the thickness of flake. We conclude that the relatively weak interlayer coupling is instrumental in stabilizing orbital FFLO state at higher temperature with respect to the critical temperature and lower magnetic field with respect to paramagnetic limit in NbS2 in comparison to its NbSe2 counterpart.

Inspired by the recent experiments in monolayer iron-based superconductors, we theoretically investigate properties of a two-dimensional multiband superconductor, focusing on two aspects. First, for vortex bound states, the spatial anisotropy and positions of electron density peaks are associated with interband couplings. Second, even with inversion symmetry, there allows a Ising-type spin-orbit coupling, leading to the enhanced in-plane upper critical field., Comment: 4 pages + 1 page references, 3 figures

Magnetic field is expelled from a superconductor, unless it forms quantum vortices, consisting of a core singularity with current circulating around it. The London quantization condition implies that there is one core singularity per quantum of magnetic flux in single-component superconductors, while in multiband materials fractional vortices are possible. Here, we report the first observation of quantum vortex core fractionalization on the potassium terminated surface of multiband superconductor KFe2As2 by scanning tunneling microscopy. We observe splitting of an integer-flux vortex into several fractional vortices, leading to disparity between numbers of flux quanta and vortex cores. Our findings demonstrate that fractionalized core singularities are possible in a multiband superconductor, opening avenue for new experimental platforms with quasiparticles with fractional statistics., Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures

The nearby elliptical galaxy M87 contains one of the only two supermassive black holes whose emission surrounding the event horizon has been imaged by the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT). In 2018, more than two dozen multi-wavelength (MWL) facilities (from radio to gamma-ray energies) took part in the second M87 EHT campaign. The goal of this extensive MWL campaign was to better understand the physics of the accreting black hole M87*, the relationship between the inflow and inner jets, and the high-energy particle acceleration. Understanding the complex astrophysics is also a necessary first step towards performing further tests of general relativity. The MWL campaign took place in April 2018, overlapping with the EHT M87* observations. We present a new, contemporaneous spectral energy distribution (SED) ranging from radio to very high energy (VHE) gamma-rays, as well as details of the individual observations and light curves. We also conduct phenomenological modelling to investigate the basic source properties. We present the first VHE gamma-ray flare from M87 detected since 2010. The flux above 350 GeV has more than doubled within a period of about 36 hours. We find that the X-ray flux is enhanced by about a factor of two compared to 2017, while the radio and millimetre core fluxes are consistent between 2017 and 2018. We detect evidence for a monotonically increasing jet position angle that corresponds to variations in the bright spot of the EHT image. Our results show the value of continued MWL monitoring together with precision imaging for addressing the origins of high-energy particle acceleration. The approach of shortcuts to adiabaticity enables the effective execution of adiabatic dynamics in quantum information processing with enhanced speed. Owing to the inherent trade-off between dynamical speed and the cost associated with the transitionless driving field, executing arbitrarily fast operations becomes impractical. To understand the accurate interplay between speed and energetic cost in this process, we propose theoretically and verify experimentally a new trade-off, which is characterized by a tightly optimized bound within $s$-parameterized phase spaces. Our experiment is carried out in a single ultracold $^{40}$Ca$^{+}$ ion trapped in a harmonic potential. By exactly operating the quantum states of the ion, we execute the Landau-Zener model as an example, where the quantum speed limit as well as the cost are governed by the spectral gap. We witness that our proposed trade-off is indeed tight in scenarios involving both initially eigenstates and initially thermal equilibrium states. Our work helps understanding the fundamental constraints in shortcuts to adiabaticity and illuminates the potential of under-utilized phase spaces that have been traditionally overlooked., Comment: 6+5 pages, 3+3 figures

Although entanglement is considered as an essential resource for quantum information processing, whether entanglement helps for energy conversion or output in the quantum regime is still lack of experimental witness. Here we report on an energy-conversion device operating as a quantum engine with the working medium acted by two entangled ions confined in a harmonic potential. The two ions are entangled by virtually coupling to one of the vibrational modes shared by the two ions, and the quantum engine couples to a quantum load, which is another shared vibrational mode. We explore the energy conversion efficiency of the quantum engine and investigate the useful energy (i.e., the maximum extractable work) stored in the quantum load by tuning the two ions in different degrees of entanglement as well as detecting the change of the phonons in the load. Our observation provides, for the first time, quantitative evidence that entanglement fuels the useful energy produced by the quantum engine, but not helpful for the energy conversion efficiency. We investigate the properties of the two-dimensional model with Rashba-type spin-orbit coupling cubic in electron momentum. In the normal phase, edge states emerge on open boundaries. In the superconducting phase, edge states could evolve into gapped fermionic edge states. 3C84 is a nearby radio source with a complex total intensity structure, showing linear polarisation and spectral patterns. A detailed investigation of the central engine region necessitates the use of VLBI above the hitherto available maximum frequency of 86GHz. Using ultrahigh resolution VLBI observations at the highest available frequency of 228GHz, we aim to directly detect compact structures and understand the physical conditions in the compact region of 3C84. We used EHT 228GHz observations and, given the limited (u,v)-coverage, applied geometric model fitting to the data. We also employed quasi-simultaneously observed, multi-frequency VLBI data for the source in order to carry out a comprehensive analysis of the core structure. We report the detection of a highly ordered, strong magnetic field around the central, SMBH of 3C84. The brightness temperature analysis suggests that the system is in equipartition. We determined a turnover frequency of $\nu_m=(113\pm4)$GHz, a corresponding synchrotron self-absorbed magnetic field of $B_{SSA}=(2.9\pm1.6)$G, and an equipartition magnetic field of $B_{eq}=(5.2\pm0.6)$G. Three components are resolved with the highest fractional polarisation detected for this object ($m_\textrm{net}=(17.0\pm3.9)$%). The positions of the components are compatible with those seen in low-frequency VLBI observations since 2017-2018. We report a steeply negative slope of the spectrum at 228GHz. We used these findings to test models of jet formation, propagation, and Faraday rotation in 3C84. The findings of our investigation into different flow geometries and black hole spins support an advection-dominated accretion flow in a magnetically arrested state around a rapidly rotating supermassive black hole as a model of the jet-launching system in the core of 3C84. The Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state, an unusual superconducting state, defies high magnetic fields beyond the Pauli paramagnetic limit. It exhibits a spatial modulation of the superconducting order parameter in real space and is exceptionally rare. Recently, an even more exotic variant - the orbital FFLO state - was predicted and identified in the transition metal dichalcogenide superconductor 2H-NbSe2. This state emerges in thin samples with thicknesses below ~40 nm, at the boundary between two and three dimensions. The complex interplay between Ising spin orbit coupling and the Pauli paramagnetic effect can lead to a stabilization of the FFLO state in a relatively large range of the magnetic phase diagram, even well below the Pauli limit. In this study, we present experimental evidence of the formation of this orbital FFLO state in bulk 2H-NbSe2 samples. This evidence was obtained using high-resolution DC magnetization and magnetic torque experiments in magnetic fields applied strictly parallel to the NbSe2 basal plane. Both quantities display a crossover to a discontinuous first-order superconducting transition at the normal state boundary in magnetic fields of 4 T and above. This is usually seen as a sign that Pauli paramagnetic pair breaking effects affect the superconducting state. The magnetic torque reveals a small step-like reversible anomaly, indicating a magnetic field-induced thermodynamic phase transition within the superconducting state. This anomaly bears many similarities to the FFLO transitions in other FFLO superconductors, suggesting the potential existence of an orbital FFLO state in bulk 2H-NbSe2 samples. Additionally, we observe a pronounced in-plane 6-fold symmetry of the upper critical field in the field range above this phase transition, which has previously been interpreted as a hallmark of the orbital FFLO state in thin 2H-NbSe2.

We self-consistently calculate the supercurrent diode effect from microscopic models of quasi one- and two-dimensional clean superconductors with spin-orbit coupling under external Zeeman fields, and show that the Edelstein effect is responsible for the supercurrent diode effect. Strong iron lines are a common feature of the optical spectra of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and quasars from $z\sim 6-7$ to the local Universe, and [Fe/Mg] ratios do not show cosmic evolution. During active episodes, accretion disks surrounding supermassive black holes (SMBHs) inevitably form stars in the self-gravitating part and these stars accrete with high accretion rates. In this paper, we investigate the population evolution of accretion-modified stars (AMSs) to produce irons and magnesium in AGNs. The AMSs as a new type of stars are allowed to have any metallicity but without significant loss from stellar winds since the winds are choked by the dense medium of the disks and return to the core stars. Mass functions of the AMS population show a pile-up or cutoff pile-up shape in top-heavy or top-dominant forms if the stellar winds are strong, consistent with the narrow range of supernovae (SN) explosions driven by the known pair-instability. This provides an efficient way to produce metals. Meanwhile, SN explosions support an inflated disk as a dusty torus. Furthermore, the evolving top-heavy initial mass functions (IMFs) lead to bright luminosity in infrared bands in dusty regions. This contributes a new component in infrared bands which is independent of the emissions from the central part of accretion disks, appearing as a long-term trending of the NIR continuum compared to optical variations. In this paper, we investigate the astrophysical processes of stellar-mass black holes (sMBHs) embedded in advection-dominated accretion flows (ADAFs) of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) in low-luminosity active galactic nuclei (AGNs). The sMBH is undergoing Bondi accretion at a rate lower than the SMBH. Outflows from the sMBH-ADAF dynamically interact with their surroundings and form a cavity inside the SMBH-ADAF, thereby quenching the accretion onto the SMBH. Rejuvenation of the Bondi accretion is rapidly done by turbulence. These processes give rise to quasi-periodic episodes of sMBH activities and create flickerings from relativistic jets developed by the Blandford-Znajek mechanism if the sMBH is maximally rotating. Accumulating successive sMBH-outflows trigger viscous instability of the SMBH-ADAF, leading to a flare following a series of flickerings. Recently, the similarity of near-infrared flare's orbits has been found by GRAVITY/VLTI astrometric observations of Sgr A$\!^{*}$: their loci during the last 4-years consist of a ring in agreement with the well-determined SMBH mass. We apply the present model to Sgr A$\!^{*}$, which shows quasi-periodic flickerings. A SMBHH of $\sim 40 M_{\odot}$ is preferred orbiting around the central SMBH of Sgr A$\!^{*}$ from fitting radio to X-ray continuum. Such an extreme mass ratio inspiraling (EMRI) provides an excellent laboratory for LISA, Taiji and Tianqin detection of mHz gravitational waves with strains of $\sim 10^{-17}$, as well as their polarization., Comment: 16 pages, 3 figures, accepted by ApJL

Gamma rays from HESS J1849$-$000, a middle-aged TeV pulsar wind nebula (PWN), are observed by the Tibet air shower array and the muon detector array. The detection significance of gamma rays reaches $4.0\, \sigma$ and $4.4\, \sigma$ levels above 25 TeV and 100 TeV, respectively, in units of Gaussian standard deviation $\sigma$. The energy spectrum measured between $40\, {\rm TeV} < E < 320\, {\rm TeV}$ for the first time is described with a simple power-law function of ${\rm d}N/{\rm d}E = (2.86 \pm 1.44) \times 10^{-16}(E/40\, {\rm TeV})^{-2.24 \pm 0.41}\, {\rm TeV}^{-1}\, {\rm cm}^{-2}\, {\rm s}^{-1}$. The gamma-ray energy spectrum from the sub-TeV ($E < 1\, {\rm TeV}$) to sub-PeV ($100\, {\rm TeV} < E < 1\, {\rm PeV}$) ranges including the results of previous studies can be modeled with the leptonic scenario, inverse Compton scattering by high-energy electrons accelerated by the PWN of PSR J1849$-$0001. On the other hand, the gamma-ray energy spectrum can also be modeled with the hadronic scenario in which gamma rays are generated from the decay of neutral pions produced by collisions between accelerated cosmic-ray protons and the ambient molecular cloud found in the gamma-ray emitting region. The cutoff energy of cosmic-ray protons $E_{\rm p\, cut}$, cut is estimated at ${\rm log}_{10}(E_{\rm p,\, cut}/{\rm TeV}) = 3.73^{+2.98}_{-0.66}$, suggesting that protons are accelerated up to the PeV energy range. HESS J1843$-$033 is a very-high-energy gamma-ray source whose origin remains unidentified. This work presents, for the first time, the energy spectrum of gamma rays beyond $100\, {\rm TeV}$ from the HESS J1843$-$033 region using the data recorded by the Tibet air shower array and its underground muon detector array. A gamma-ray source with an extension of $0.34^{\circ} \pm 0.12^{\circ}$ is successfully detected above $25\, {\rm TeV}$ at $(\alpha,\, \delta) = (281.09^{\circ}\pm 0.10^{\circ},\, -3.76^{\circ}\pm 0.09^{\circ})$ near HESS J1843$-$033 with a statistical significance of $6.2\, \sigma$, and the source is named TASG J1844$-$038. The position of TASG J1844$-$038 is consistent with those of HESS J1843$-$033, eHWC J1842$-$035, and LHAASO J1843$-$0338. The measured gamma-ray energy spectrum in $25\, {\rm TeV} < E < 130\, {\rm TeV}$ is described with ${\rm d}N/{\rm d}E = (9.70\pm 1.89)\times 10^{-16} (E/40\, {\rm TeV})^{-3.26\pm 0.30}\, {\rm TeV}^{-1} {\rm cm}^{-2} {\rm s}^{-1}$, and the spectral fit to the combined spectra of HESS J1843$-$033, LHAASO J1843$-$0338, and TASG J1844$-$038 implies the existence of a cutoff at $49.5\pm 9.0\, {\rm TeV}$. We propose a new type of supercurrent diode effect on the surface of a superconductor with surface states under in-plane magnetic fields. Surface supercurrent diode effect can lead to a perfect supercurrent diode in a considerably wide range of fields. For comparison, the conventional supercurrent diode effect due to the spin-orbit coupling in a two-dimensional superconductor cannot be perfect in usual cases. Candidates such as the (001) surface of iron-based superconductors BaFe$_{2-x}$Co$_x$As$_2$ are discussed. The critical field behavior of a layered Ising superconductor with finite number of layers is studied. Under in-plane magnetic fields, the finite-momentum superconductivity dubbed as the orbital Fulde- Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state is found in the regime of low field and high temperature. The nontrivial band topology can influence the Hofstadter spectrum. We investigate the Hofstadter spectrum for various models of Chern insulators under a rational flux $\frac{\phi_{0}}{q}$, here $\phi_{0}=\frac{h}{e}$ and $q$ being an integer. We find two major features. First, the number of splitting subbands is $|q-C|$ with Chern number $C$. Second, the anomalous open-orbit subbands with Chern numbers $q-1$ and $-q-1$ emerge, which are beyond the parameter window $(-q/2,q/2)$ of the Diophantine equation studied by Thouless-Kohmoto-Nightingale-den Nijs [Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{49}, 405 (1982)]. These two findings are explained by semiclassical dynamics. We propose that the number of splitting subbands can be utilized to determine Chern number in cold atom systems, and the open-orbit subbands can provide routes to study exotic features beyond the Landau level physics.

Quantum heat engines are expected to outperform the classical counterparts due to quantum coherences involved. Here we experimentally execute a single-ion quantum heat engine and demonstrate, for the first time, the dynamics and the enhanced performance of the heat engine originating from the Liouvillian exceptional points (LEPs). In addition to the topological effects related to LEPs, we focus on thermodynamic effects, which can be understood by the Landau-Zener-Stuckelberg process under decoherence. We witness a positive net work from the quantum heat engine if the heat engine cycle dynamically encircles an LEP. Further investigation reveals that, a larger net work is done when the system is operated closer to the LEP. We attribute the enhanced performance of the quantum heat engine to the LZS process, enabled by the eigenenergy landscape in the vicinity of the LEP, and the EP-induced topological transition.
