Abstract

We present first measurements of the evolution of the differential transverse momentum correlation function, C, with collision centrality in Au + Au interactions at root s(NN) = 200 GeV. This observable exhibits a strong dependence on collision centrality that is qualitatively similar to that of number correlations previously reported. We use the observed longitudinal broadening of the near-side peak of C with increasing centrality to estimate the ratio of the shear viscosity to entropy density, eta/s, of the matter formed in central Au + Au interactions. We obtain an upper limit estimate of eta/s that suggests that the produced medium has a small viscosity per unit entropy. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract

We study the energy dependense of the transverse momentum (PT) spectra for charged pions, protons and anti-protons for An + An collisions at root(NN)-N-s = 62.4 and 200 GeV. Data are presented at mid-rapidity (broken vertical bar y broken vertical bar 7 GeV/c) the modification is similar for both energies. The p/pi(+) and (p) over bar/pi(-) ratios for central collisions at root(NN)-N-s = 62.4 GeV peak at PT similar or equal to 2 GeV/c. In the PT range where recombination is expected to dominate, the p/pi(+) ratios at 62.4 GeV are larger than at 200 GeV, while the (p) over bar/pi(-) ratios are smaller. For PT > 2 GeV/c, the (p) over bar/pi(-) ratios at the two beam energies are independent of P-T and centrality indicating that the dependence of the (p) over bar/pi(-) ratio on P-T does not change between 62.4 and 200 GeV. Abstract

We present the first measurements of charge-dependent correlations on angular difference variables η 1 − η 2 (pseudorapidity) and ϕ 1 − ϕ 2 (azimuth) for primary charged hadrons with transverse momentum 0.15 ⩽ p t ⩽ 2 GeV / c and | η | ⩽ 1.3 from Au–Au collisions at s N N = 130 GeV . We observe correlation structures not predicted by theory but consistent with evolution of hadron emission geometry with increasing centrality from one-dimensional fragmentation of color strings along the beam direction to an at least two-dimensional hadronization geometry along the beam and azimuth directions of a hadron-opaque bulk medium.

Abstract

Identified mid-rapidity particle spectra of pi(+/-), K+/-, and p((p) over bar) from 200 GeV p + p and d + Au collisions are reported. A time-of-flight detector based on multi-gap resistive plate chamber technology is used for particle identification. The particle-species dependence of the Cronin effect is observed to be significantly smaller than that at lower energies. The ratio of the nuclear modification factor (R-dAu) between protons (p + (p) over bar) and charged hadrons (h) in the transverse momentum range 1.2 < p(T) < 3.0 GeV/c is measured to be 1.19 +/- 0.05(stat) +/- 0.03(syst) in minimum-bias collisions and shows little centrality dependence. The yield ratio of (p + (p) over bar)/h in minimum-bias d + Au collisions is found to be a factor of 2 lower than that in Au + Au collisions, indicating that the Cronin effect alone is not enough to account for the relative baryon enhancement observed in heavy ion collisions at RHIC. Abstract

The invariant double-differential cross section, E1E2d6 delta/dp(1)3dp(2)3, and the double-spin asymmetry, A(LL), for inclusive multi-gamma pair production in which gamma-rays came from neutral mesons were measured with a 200 GeV/c longitudinally-polarized proton beam and a longitudinally-polarized proton target. Most of the multi-gamma pairs comes from two-jet type events which are sensitive to partonic interaction. The A(LL) values were found to be consistent with zero. The invariant double-differential cross section for inclusive pi0pi0 production was also measured. These measured cross sections are consistent with LUND Monte Carlo simulations. Using the LUND Monte Carlo simulation package with the Carlitz-Kaur model of spin dependent distribution functions of valence quarks, the A(LL) values have been compared with theoretical predictions of gluon polarization, DELTAG/G. The results put restrictions on the size of DELTAG/G in the region of 0.05 less-than-or-similar-to x less-than-or-similar-to 0.35.

Abstract

The analyzing power [ital A][sub [ital N]] of proton-proton elastic scattering in the Coulomb-nuclear interference region has been measured using the 200-GeV/[ital c] Fermilab polarized proton beam. A theoretically predicted interference between the hadronic non-spin-flip amplitude and the electromagnetic spin-flip amplitude is shown for the first time to be present at high energies in the region of 1.5[times]10[sup [minus]3] to 5.0[times]10[sup [minus]2] (GeV/[ital c])[sup 2] four-momentum transfer squared, and our results are analyzed in connection with theoretical calculations. In addition, the role of possible contributions of the hadronic spin-flip amplitude is discussed.

Abstract

The analyzing power in inclusive charged pion production has been measured using the 200 GeV Fermilab polarized proton beam. A striking dependence in x(F) is observed in which A(N) increases from 0 to 0.42 with increasing x(F) for the pi+ data and decreases from 0 to -0.38 with increasing x(F) for pi- data. The kinematic range covered is 0.2 less-than-or-equal-to x(F) less-than-or-equal-to 0.9 and 0.2 less-than-or-equal-to p(T) 2.0 GeV/c. In a simple model our data indicate that at large x(F) the transverse spin of the proton is correlated with that of its quark constituents.

Abstract

The single-spin asymmetry A{sub N}(anti pp) for inclusive {pi}{sup 0} production at 0.5 < p{sub t} < 2GeV/c by 200 GeV transversely-polarized antiprotons on protons has been measured at Fermilab over a wide range of x{sub F}. We observe that A{sub N}(anti pp) has the same sign, a similar x{sub F} dependence, and about half the magnitude as A{sub N}(pp) for {pi}{sup 0} production by protons. We also present the ratio of the spin-averaged sections for {pi}{sup 0} production by antiproton and by protons. (orig.).

Abstract

A single-spin asymmetry in the inclusive π 0 production at small x F was measured. In the experiment 40 GeV/c π − mesons were incident on transversely polarized protons and deutrons. An asymmetry of (40–50)% has been revealed in the hard scattering region.

Abstract

We review the most important experimental results from the first three years of nucleus-nucleus collision studies at RHIC, with emphasis on results from the STAR experiment, and we assess their interpretation and comparison to theory. The theory-experiment comparison suggests that central Au+Au collisions at RHIC produce dense, rapidly thermalizing matter characterized by: (1) initial energy densities above the critical values predicted by lattice QCD for establishment of a Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP); (2) nearly ideal fluid flow, marked by constituent interactions of very short mean free path, established most probably at a stage preceding hadron formation; and (3) opacity to jets. Many of the observations are consistent with models incorporating QGP formation in the early collision stages, and have not found ready explanation in a hadronic framework. However, the measurements themselves do not yet establish unequivocal evidence for a transition to this new form of matter. The theoretical treatment of the collision evolution, despite impressive successes, invokes a suite of distinct models, degrees of freedom and assumptions of as yet unknown quantitative consequence. The π0 inclusive and semi‐inclusive, single‐spin asymmetries have been measured using transversely‐polarized, 200‐GeV/c proton and antiproton beams colliding with an unpolarized hydrogen target. The spin asymmetry A(N) for inclusive pi0 production by 200-GeV transversely-polarized protons on a liquid hydrogen target has been measured at Fermilab over a wide range of xF, with 0.50.3, the asymmetry rises with increasing xF and reaches a value of A(N)=0.15±0.03 in the region 0.6

Abstract

The single-spin asymmetry A(N) (antiproton_proton) for inclusive pi-0 production at 0.5 < p(t) < 2 GeV/c by 200 GeV transversely-polarized antiprotons on protons has been measured at Fermilab over a wide range of X(F). We observed that A(N) (antiproton_proton) has the same sign, a similar X(F) dependence, and about half the magnitude as A(N) (pp) for pi-0 production by protons. We also present the ratio of the spin-averaged cross sections for pi-0 production by antiprotons and by protons.

Abstract

The analyzing power (spin-dependent azimuthal asymmetry) has been observed for the first time in the nuclear Coulomb coherent production process, the Primakoff process,'' with the use of the newly constructed 185-GeV/{ital c} Fermilab polarized proton beam. We have observed a large asymmetry of this process in the regions of {vert bar}{ital t}{prime}{vert bar}{lt}0.001 (GeV/{ital c}){sup 2} and 1.36{lt}{ital M}({pi}{sup 0}p){lt}1.52 GeV/{ital c}{sup 2}, where the Coulomb process is predominant. The measured asymmetry is consistent with the analyzing power of the existing low-energy {gamma}+{ital p}{r arrow}{pi}{sup 0}+p data.

Abstract

We describe a new polarized-proton and -antiproton beam with 185-GeV/c momentum in the Fermilab MP beam line which is currently operational. The design uses the parity-conserving decay of lambda and antilambda hyperons to produce polarized protons and antiprotons, respectively. A beam-transport system minimizes depolarization effects and uses a set of 12 dipole magnets that rotate the beam-particle spin direction. A beam-tagging system determines the momentum and polarization of individual beam particles, allowing a selection of particles in definite intervals at momentum and polarization. We measured polarization of the beam by using two types of polarimeters, which verified the determination of polarization by a beam-particle tagging system. Two of these processes are the inverse-Primakoff effect and the Coulomb-nuclear interference (CNI) in elastic proton-proton scattering. Another experiment measured the {pi}{sup 0} production asymmetry of large-x{sub F} values; this process may now be used as an on-line beam polarimeter. 9 refs., 9 figs.

Abstract

The energy dependence of the differential cross section for π + p elastic scattering at a c.m. angle near 174° has been measured. The momentum range of incident π + was 2.06–4.70 GeV/ c . On this energy dependence one can see a structure, i.e. maxima corresponding to the baryon resonances Δ (2420) and Δ (2840). The structurte is used for determination of the parities of these resonances.

Abstract

First results on measuring polarization in π - p →π°n reaction at 40 GeV/c are presented for the 4-momentum transfer range from 0.05 up to 0.4 (GeV/c)2. The experiment was carried out at the IHEP 70 GeV accelerator on a polarized proton target. Polarization in this reaction was earlier studied at incident momentum below 11.2 GeV/c/1–4/. Comparison of the present data with the previous ones allows us to see the polarization effect decreases with energy growth.

Spin asymmetry of the protons emitted in the (85–95)°L.S. angular region in the π+d↑→p+x reaction was measured using a deuteron frozen‐spin target and a 40 GeV/c pion beam. The experimental results for (0.3–0.7) GeV/c momenta of the protons asre discussed and compared with the predictions of some models of cumulative particle production.

The analyzing power AN of proton-proton, proton-hydrocarbon, and antiproton-hydrocarbon, scattering in the Coulomb-nuclear interference region has been measured using thhe 185 GeV/c Fermilab polarized-proton and -antiproton beams. The results are found to be consistent with theoretical predictions within statistical uncertainties.

A 40%‐asymmetry has been revealed in the hard scattering region at 40 GeV. Systematic errors in the experiment are noticeable. The observed effect requires detailed discussion of the production mechanisms.
