We analyzed the measured thermospheric response of an extreme solar X17.2 flare that irradiated the Earth's upper atmosphere during the so-called Halloween events in late October/early November 2003. We suggest that such events can serve as proxies for the intense electromagnetic and corpuscular radiation environment of the Sun or other stars during their early phases of evolution. We applied and compared empirical thermosphere models with satellite drag measurements from the GRACE satellites and found that the Jacchia-Bowman 2008 model can reproduce the drag measurements very well during undisturbed solar conditions but gets worse during extreme solar events. By analyzing the peak of the X17.2 flare spectra and comparing it with spectra of young solar proxies, our results indicate that the peak flare radiation flux corresponds to a hypothetical Sun-like star or the Sun at the age of approximately 2.3 Gyr. This implies that the peak extreme ultraviolet (EUV) radiation is enhanced by a factor of about 2.5 times compared to today's Sun. On the assumption that the Sun emitted an EUV flux of that magnitude and by modifying the activity indices in the Jacchia-Bowman 2008 model, we obtain an average exobase temperature of 1950 K, which corresponds with previous theoretical studies related to thermospheric heating and expansion caused by the solar EUV flux.

When examining thermal atmospheric escape usually either Jeans escape or hydrodynamic escape is considered. Jeans escape where particles with velocities higher than the escape velocity can escape a planetary atmosphere is usually considered when particles in a collision free region are examined. Hydrodynamic escape on the other hand presumes that the outflowing gas can be considered as a continuous homogeneous medium where neither light nor heavy particles can be discriminated from each other. Recently Strobel (2009) applied a so called 'slow hydrodynamic escape model' which describes cases intermediate between Jeans escape and hydrodynamic escape for the nitrogen and methane molecules in Titan's upper atmosphere. This model requires an extended quasi collisional region above the exobase where efficient energy transfer can presumably occur. In this study we examine the collision probability of nitrogen and methane molecules with ambient atmospheric particles within Titan's exosphere using a modified Monte Carlo code introduced by Wurz and Lammer (2003) to analyze if the 'slow hydrodynamic escape model' is applicable to Titan's exosphere or not. Our results show that the collision probability of nitrogen and methane within Titan's exosphere decreases quickly with height above the exobase. Also the probability of a nitrogen or a methane molecule to collide with another heavy molecule is far larger than the probability of a collision with a light particle since in the region where nitrogen and methane are mainly present the heavy molecules dominate the light molecules by a factor of 10 100. The results of our particle simulation do not confirm the existence of an extended quasi collisional region above the exobase where heavy slow molecules can gain the escape velocity through collisions with light fast particles. We discuss the evolution of the atmosphere of early Earth and of terrestrial exoplanets which may be capable of sustaining liquid water oceans and continents where life may originate. The formation age of a terrestrial planet, its mass and size, as well as the lifetime in the EUV-saturated early phase of its host star play a significant role in its atmosphere evolution. We show that planets even in orbits within the habitable zone of their host stars might not lose nebular- or catastrophically outgassed initial protoatmospheres completely and could end up as water worlds with CO2 and hydrogen- or oxygen-rich upper atmospheres. If an atmosphere of a terrestrial planet evolves to an N2-rich atmosphere too early in its lifetime, the atmosphere may be lost. We show that the initial conditions set up by the formation of a terrestrial planet and by the evolution of the host star's EUV and plasma environment are very important factors owing to which a planet may evolve to a habitable world. Finally we present a method for studying the discussed atmosphere evolution hypotheses by future UV transit observations of terrestrial exoplanets.

The detection and investigation of EUV heated, extended and non-hydrostatic upper atmospheres around terrestrial exoplanets would provide important insights into the interaction of the host stars plasma environment as well as the evolution of Earth-type planets their atmospheres and possible magnetic environments. We discuss different scenarios where one can expect that Earth-like planets should experience non-hydrostatic upper atmosphere conditions so that dynamically outward flowing neutral atoms can interact with the stellar plasma flow so that huge hydrogen coronae and energetic neutral atoms (ENA) can be produced via charge exchange. By observing the size of the extended upper atmospheres and related ENA-clouds and by determining the velocities of the surrounding hydrogen atoms, conclusions can be drawn in respect to the origin of these features. Due to the large number of M-type stars in our neighbourhood and their long periods of strong and moderate stellar activity in comparison to G-stars, we expect that M-type stars represent the most promising candidates for the detection of hydrogen ENA-clouds and the subsequent study of the interaction between the host star and the planets’ upper atmosphere. We show that the low mass of M-type stars also makes them preferable targets to observe extended hydrogen clouds around terrestrial exoplanets with a mass as low as one Earth mass. Transit follow-up observations in the UV-range of terrestrial exoplanets around M-type stars with space observatories such as the World Space Observatory-UV (WSO-UV) would provide a unique opportunity to shed more light on the early evolution of Earth-like planets, including those of our own Solar System.

Aims. We study the possible atmospheric mass loss from 57 known transiting exoplanets around F, G, K, and M-type stars over evolutionary timescales. For stellar wind induced mass loss studies, we estimate the position of the pressure balance boundary between Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) and stellar wind ram pressures and the planetary ionosphere pressure for non- or weakly magnetized gas giants at close orbits. Methods. The thermal mass loss of atomic hydrogen is calculated by a mass loss equation where we consider a realistic heating efficiency, a radius-scaling law and a mass loss enhancement factor due to stellar tidal forces. The model takes into account the temporal evolution of the stellar EUV flux by applying power laws for F, G, K, and M-type stars. The planetary ionopause obstacle, which is an important factor for ion pick-up escape from non- or weakly magnetized gas giants is estimated by applying empirical power-laws. Results. By assuming a realistic heating efficiency of about 10–25% we found that WASP-12b may have lost about 6–12% of its mass during its lifetime. A few transiting low density gas giants at similar orbital location, like WASP-13b, WASP-15b, CoRoT-1b or CoRoT-5b may have lost up to 1–4% of their initial mass. All other transiting exoplanets in our sample experience negligible thermal loss (≤1%) during their lifetime. We found that the ionospheric pressure can balance the impinging dense stellar wind and average CME plasma flows at distances which are above the visual radius of “Hot Jupiters”, resulting in mass losses

As an initial effort to study the evolution of the Venus atmosphere, the influence of the solar wind density and the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) x component (the x-axis points from Venus towards the Sun) on the O+ ion escape rate from Venus is investigated using a three-dimensional quasi-neutral hybrid (HYB-Venus) model. The HYB-Venus model is first applied to a case of the high-density (100 cm−3) solar wind interaction with Venus selected from the Pioneer Venus Orbiter observations to demonstrate its capability for the study. Two sets of simulations with a wide range of solar wind densities and different IMF x components are then performed. It is found that the O+ ion escape rate increases with increasing solar wind density. The O+ ion escape rate saturates when the solar wind density becomes high (above 100 cm−3). The results also suggest that the IMF x component enhances the O+ ion escape rate, given a fixed IMF component perpendicular to the x-axis. Finally, the results imply a higher ion loss rate for early-Venus, when solar conditions were dramatically different.

International audience; Abstract In light of assessing the habitability of Mars, we examine the impact of the magnetic field on the atmosphere. When there is a magnetic field, the atmosphere is protected from erosion by solar wind. The magnetic field ensures the maintenance of a dense atmosphere, necessary for liquid water to exist on the surface of Mars. We also examine the impact of the rotation of Mars on the magnetic field. When the magnetic field of Mars ceased to exist (about 4 Gyr ago), atmospheric escape induced by solar wind began. We consider scenarios which could ultimately lead to a decrease of atmospheric pressure to the presently observed value of 7 mbar: a much weaker early martian magnetic field, a late onset of the dynamo, and high erosion rates of a denser early atmosphere.

Previous interpretations of the Pioneer Venus mass spectrometer data of the deuterium to hydrogen ( D / H ) ratio of 1.9 × 10 - 2 or 120 ± 40 times the terrestrial value indicate that Venus may have had at least an H 2 O content of the order of about 0.3% of a terrestrial ocean (TO), and even much more during and shortly after the accretion period of ⩽ 300 Myr , depending on the unknown ratio of a continuous supply of H 2 O by comets to a hydrogen blow-off loss and impact erosion of the early atmosphere. In view of the low H 2 O abundance in the present atmosphere, several studies suggest that the planet should have lost most of its H 2 O during the early high X-ray, EUV and solar wind period of the active young Sun. Because oxygen did not accumulate in Venus’ atmosphere it is commonly believed that a part of the oxygen from dissociated H 2 O vapor was dragged off to space along with the escaping hydrogen during a blow-off period, or could have oxidized the surface minerals to produce FeO and Fe 2 O 3 to the depths of a few kilometers to tens of kilometers depending on the initial amount of H 2 O . We use in the present study, for the first time, multi-wavelength X-ray and EUV (XUV) observations by the ASCA, ROSAT, EUVE, FUSE and IUE satellites and stellar winds inferred from mass loss observations by the Hubble Space Telescope of solar proxies with ages 4.6 Gyr for the investigation of how efficiently the radiation and particle environment of the young Sun could have influenced the evolution of the early Venusian atmosphere and its H 2 O inventory due to the removal of oxygen picked up by the solar wind. For modelling the Venusian thermosphere over the planetary history we apply a diffusive-gravitational equilibrium and thermal balance model and investigate the heating of the early thermosphere by photodissociation and ionization processes, due to exothermic chemical reactions and cooling by CO 2 IR emission in the 15 μ m band. Our model simulations result in expanded thermospheres with exobase levels between about 200 km at present and about 2200 km 4.5 Gyr ago. Moreover, our results yield high exospheric temperatures during the active phase of the young Sun even if we assume a “dry” CO 2 atmosphere with similar composition that is observed on present Venus of more than 8000 K after the Sun arrived at the zero-age-main-sequence (ZAMS). Exospheric temperatures above about 4000 K lead to diffusion-limited escape and high loss rates for atomic hydrogen. The duration of this blow-off phase for atomic hydrogen essentially depends on the mixing ratios of CO 2 , N 2 and H 2 O in the early Venusian atmosphere and could last between about 150 to several hundred Myr, which could result in a large thermal loss of hydrogen from Venus. For studying how much of the H 2 O -related oxygen could have been lost to space by the ion pick up process due to the stronger solar wind and higher XUV fluxes of the young Sun we used our modelled atmospheric density profiles and studied the loss of O + ion pick up from the upper atmosphere of Venus over the planet's history by applying a numerical test particle model. Depending on the used solar wind parameters, our model simulations show that ion pick up by a strong early solar wind on a non-magnetized Venus could erode during 4.6 Gyr more than about 250 bar of O + ions, that corresponds to an equivalent amount of one terrestrial ocean. Finally, we discuss the implications of our findings for the formation of the Venusian atmosphere and discuss our results in the frame of previous studies.

Measurements of the 15N/14N isotope ratio in Titan’s atmosphere by Earth-based millimetric wavelength spectroscopic observations of HC15N/HC14N indicate that the bulk nitrogen may be enriched in the heavy isotope 15N by about 3.9–4.5 times relative to the terrestrial value. For the explanation of this isotope anomaly, one finds that the mass of Titan’s early atmosphere was at least 30 times larger than the present value. In our study we use recent astrophysical observations on radiative fluxes and stellar winds of solar-like stars with different ages as well as lunar and meteorite fossil records, which indicate that the early Sun underwent a highly active phase resulting in up to about 100 times higher X-ray and extreme ultraviolet (XUV) radiation fluxes and much higher solar wind mass fluxes 100–500 Myr after it arrived at the zero-age-main-sequence. Because the evolution of Titan’s atmosphere can only be understood within the context of the evolving solar particle and radiation flux, we estimated the solar wind parameters and the XUV flux over Titan’s history. Our study indicate that Saturn’s magnetosphere, due to a higher solar wind pressure, was highly compressed during most of its lifetime to distances smaller than Titan’s orbital radius of about 20 Saturn radii. Because the early Sun had a much denser solar wind mass flux up to 1000 times higher than today, we estimate the ion pick up and sputter loss rates on early Titan in the order of about 1026 and 8 × 1028 s−1, respectively, and found that both non-thermal atmospheric loss processes can not explain the observed enrichment in 15N isotopes. Therefore, atmospheric loss during hydrodynamic conditions is investigated, since it can be shown that the exospheric temperature may have been above the “blow-off” temperature of molecular nitrogen of about 8000 K during the early evolutionary stages of Titan’s atmosphere. We found that due to the high XUV radiation input of the young Sun, Titan’s nitrogen atmosphere could have been expanded up to about 3 Titan radii and a massive atmospheric evaporation with N2 loss rates in the order of about 5 × 1030 s−1 may have occurred. The results of our study indicate that the 15N/14N isotope anomaly can be explained if Titan’s upper atmosphere experienced hydrodynamic conditions during a time period of about 50 Myr after the satellites origin. In situ measurements by the Gas Chromatograph and Mass Spectrometer (GCMS) instrument on board of ESA’s Huygens entry probe can be used as a confirmation of the Earth-based isotope anomaly observations and will be of great importance for understanding the formation and evolution of atmospheres around bodies in the solar system.

By considering martian-like planetary embryos inside the habitable zone of solar-like stars we study the behavior of the hydrodynamic atmospheric escape of hydrogen for small values of the Jeans escape parameter $\beta < 3$, near the base of the thermosphere, that is defined as a ratio of the gravitational and thermal energy. Our study is based on a 1-D hydrodynamic upper atmosphere model that calculates the volume heating rate in a hydrogen dominated thermosphere due to the absorption of the stellar soft X-ray and extreme ultraviolet (XUV) flux. We find that when the $\beta$ value near the mesopause/homopause level exceeds a critical value of $\sim$2.5, there exists a steady hydrodynamic solution with a smooth transition from subsonic to supersonic flow. For a fixed XUV flux, the escape rate of the upper atmosphere is an increasing function of the temperature at the lower boundary. Our model results indicate a crucial enhancement of the atmospheric escape rate, when the Jeans escape parameter $\beta$ decreases to this critical value. When $\beta$ becomes $\leq$2.5, there is no stationary hydrodynamic transition from subsonic to supersonic flow. Latest research in planet formation indicates that Mars formed within a few million years (Myr) and remained as a planetary embryo that never grew to a more massive planet. It can also be expected from dynamical models that most of Mars' building blocks consisted of material that formed in orbital locations just beyond the ice line which could have contained ~0.1–0.2wt.% of H2O. By using these constraints, we estimate the nebula-captured and catastrophically outgassed volatile contents during the solidification of Mars' magma ocean and apply a hydrodynamic upper atmosphere model for the study of the soft X-ray and extreme ultraviolet (XUV) driven thermal escape of the martian protoatmosphere during the early active epoch of the young Sun. The amount of gas that has been captured from the protoplanetary disk into the planetary atmosphere is calculated by solving the hydrostatic structure equations in the protoplanetary nebula. Depending on nebular properties such as the dust grain depletion factor, planetesimal accretion rates and luminosities, hydrogen envelopes with masses ≥3×1019g to ≤6.5×1022g could have been captured from the nebula around early Mars. Depending on the before mentioned parameters, due to the planets low gravity and a solar XUV flux that was ~100 times stronger compared to the present value, our results indicate that early Mars would have lost its nebular captured hydrogen envelope after the nebula gas evaporated, during a fast period of ~0.1–7.5Myr. After the solidification of early Mars' magma ocean, catastrophically outgassed volatiles with the amount of ~50–250bar H2O and ~10–55bar CO2 could have been lost during ~0.4–12Myr, if the impact related energy flux of large planetesimals and small embryos to the planet's surface lasted long enough, that the steam atmosphere could have been prevented from condensing. If this was not the case, then our results suggest that the timescales for H2O condensation and ocean formation may have been shorter compared to the atmosphere evaporation timescale, so that one can speculate that sporadically periods, where some amount of liquid water may have been present on the planet's surface. However, depending on the amount of the outgassed volatiles, because of impacts and the high XUV-driven atmospheric escape rates, such sporadically wet surface conditions may have also not lasted much longer than ~0.4–12Myr. After the loss of the captured hydrogen envelope and outgassed volatiles during the first 100 Myr period of the young Sun, a warmer and probably wetter period may have evolved by a combination of volcanic outgassing and impact delivered volatiles ~4.0±0.2Gyr ago, when the solar XUV flux decreased to values that have been, Highlights • Depending on nebula parameters Mars lost its nebula captured hydrogen envelope within ~0.1–7.5Myr by hydrodynamic escape. • Mars lost its outgassed steam atmosphere and initial water inventory during ~0.4–12Myr, years by hydrodynamic escape. • Liquid water could have been formed at the surface, sporadically during short time periods before it was lost. • Due to the strong early water loss efficient plate tectonics never began.

[1] The nightside oxygen exosphere of Venus is investigated for high and moderate solar activity by means of a Monte-Carlo model. Hot O atoms are assumed to be produced by dissociative recombination of O2+ and NO+ molecular ions and by charge transfer processes between ionospheric O+ ions and neutral O and H atoms. The model considers rotational and vibrational excitation of the initial energy distribution of hot O atoms, includes elastic, inelastic, and quenching collisions between the suprathermal atoms and the ambient neutral atmosphere species, and uses differential cross sections for the determination of the scattering angle in the collisions. The results indicate that dissociative recombination of O2+ is, like at Venus' dayside, the most efficient source of hot O atoms at the planet's nightside. For high solar activity, the nightside exospheric density of hot O atoms is about one order of magnitude lower compared to the dayside, although between 2–10 times higher than in previous studies.

We study the interactions between the stellar wind plasma flow of a typical M star, such as GJ 436, and hydrogen-rich upper atmospheres of an Earth-like planet and a "super-Earth" with the radius of 2 R_Earth and a mass of 10 M_Earth, located within the habitable zone at ~0.24 AU. We investigate the formation of extended atomic hydrogen coronae under the influences of the stellar XUV flux (soft X-rays and EUV), stellar wind density and velocity, shape of a planetary obstacle (e.g., magnetosphere, ionopause), and the loss of planetary pick-up ions on the evolution of hydrogen-dominated upper atmospheres. Stellar XUV fluxes which are 1, 10, 50 and 100 times higher compared to that of the present-day Sun are considered and the formation of high-energy neutral hydrogen clouds around the planets due to the charge-exchange reaction under various stellar conditions have been modeled. Charge-exchange between stellar wind protons with planetary hydrogen atoms, and photoionization, leads to the production of initially cold ions of planetary origin. We found that the ion production rates for the studied planets can vary over a wide range, from ~1.0x10^{25} s^{-1} to ~5.3x10^{30} s^{-1}, depending on the stellar wind conditions and the assumed XUV exposure of the upper atmosphere. Our findings indicate that most likely the majority of these planetary ions are picked up by the stellar wind and lost from the planet. Finally, we estimate the long-time non-thermal ion pick-up escape for the studied planets and compare them with the thermal escape. According to our estimates, non-thermal escape of picked up ionized hydrogen atoms over a planet's lifetime varies between ~0.4 Earth ocean equivalent amounts of hydrogen (EO_H) to, 53 pages, 6 figures, 10 tables, submitted to Astrobiology

[1] We present a Monte Carlo study of the atomic hot oxygen corona of Venus. In this model we consider elastic, inelastic, and quenching collisions between the traced hot particle and the ambient neutral atmosphere as well as differential cross sections to determine the scattering angle in the collisions. We also include rotational and vibrational excitation energies for the calculation of the initial energy of the produced hot oxygen atoms. Our results indicate that the differential cross sections and the fraction between elastic, inelastic, and quenching collisions are the most sensitive parameters which effect the corona density. We found that the hot O densities inferred from PVO observations can only be reproduced during high solar activity based on a forward scattering model but without inelastic and quenching collisions. The corona densities for low solar activity (VEX solar conditions) are about a factor of 2–3 smaller than for high solar activity.

According to recent simulations of the Earth’s thermosphere, the exospheric temperature is not expected to rise above 7000–8000 K even under extreme solar EUV conditions anticipated for the early Earth. Rather, when the solar EUV flux exceeds some critical value, the escaping flow of the bulk upper thermosphere starts cooling it due to adiabatic expansion, which results in a decrease of the exobase temperature. Under these extreme conditions, the exobase might have expanded above the magnetopause and the magnetosphere had not been able to protect the upper atmosphere against strong non-thermal erosion by the solar wind. This study shows that a nitrogen-rich terrestrial atmosphere with a present-day composition would have been removed within a few million years during the extreme EUV and solar wind conditions that are expected to have prevailed before the late heavy bombardment period ∼3.8 Ga ago. Our results suggest that a CO2 amount in the early nitrogen-rich terrestrial atmosphere of at least two orders of magnitude higher than the present-time level was needed to confine the upper atmosphere after the onset of the geodynamo within the shielding magnetosphere and thus might have protected it from complete destruction.

In this study we analyze the non-thermal loss rates of O+, O2+ and CO2+ ions over the last 4.5 billion years (Gyr) in the Martian history by using a 3D hybrid model. For this reason we derived the past solar wind conditions in detail. We take into account the intensified particle flux of the early Sun as well as an Martian atmosphere, which was exposed to a sun's extreme ultraviolet (EUV) radiation flux 4.5 Gyr ago that was 100 times stronger than today. Furthermore, we model the evolution of the interplanetary magnetic field by a Weber & Davis solar wind model. The ‘external’ influences of the Sun's radiation flux and solar wind flux lead to the formation of an ionospheric obstacle by photoionization, charge exchange and electron impact. For the early Martian conditions we could show that charge exchange was the dominant ionization mechanism. Several hybrid simulations for different stages in the evolution of the Martian atmosphere, at 1, 2, 5, 10, 30 and 100 EUV, were performed to analyze the non-thermal escape processes by ion pick-up, momentum transfer from the solar wind to the ionosphere and detached ionospheric plasma clouds. Our results show a non-linear evolution of the loss rates. Using mean solar wind parameters the simulations result in an oxygen loss equivalent to the depth of a global Martian ocean of about 2.6 m over the last 4.5 Gyr. The induced magnetic field strength could be increased up to about 2000 nT. A simulation run with high solar wind density results in an oxygen loss of a Martian ocean up to 205 m depth during 150 million years after the sun reached the zero age mean sequence (ZAMS).

International audience; After the discovery of more than 400 planets beyond our Solar System, the characterization of exoplanets as well as their host stars can be considered as one of the fastest growing fields in space science during the past decade. The characterization of exoplanets can only be carried out in a well coordinated interdisciplinary way which connects planetary science, solar/stellar physics and astrophysics. We present a status report on the characterization of exoplanets and their host stars by reviewing the relevant space- and ground-based projects. One finds that the previous strategy changed from space mission concepts which were designed to search, find and characterize Earth-like rocky exoplanets to: A statistical study of planetary objects in order to get information about their abundance, an identification of potential target and finally its analysis. Spectral analysis of exoplanets is mandatory, particularly to identify bio-signatures on Earth-like planets. Direct characterization of exoplanets should be done by spectroscopy, both in the visible and in the infrared spectral range. The way leading to the direct detection and characterization of exoplanets is then paved by several questions, either concerning the pre-required science or the associated observational strategy.

[1] After more than two years in orbit still no Venus Express observations were published concerning the hot oxygen corona of Venus which could verify the corresponding controversial observations of Venera 11 and PVO, three decades ago. Based on recent energy and mass dependent collision cross sections, the energy distributions of hot atomic oxygen created via dissociative recombination of O2+ are calculated in the daytime thermosphere by means of a 3D Monte Carlo approach. The exosphere density is obtained from the corresponding energy density and angular distribution at 240 km altitude by using a test particle model which traces the ballistic trajectories of hot O atoms in the exosphere. Our study indicates that upon taking into account proper input parameters, the hot oxygen corona appears to be substantially less dense than suggested by previous simulations.

[1] We use data of the ASPERA-4 ion and electron spectrometers onboard Venus Express to determine the locations and shapes of the plasma boundaries (bow shock, ion composition boundary, and mantle) at Venus. We also investigate the variation of the terminator bow shock position as a function of the solar wind dynamic pressure and solar EUV flux. We compare the results with a 3-D hybrid simulation. In the hybrid model, ions are treated as individual particles moving in self-consistently generated electromagnetic fields and electrons are modeled as a massless charge neutralizing fluid. The planetary heavy ion plasma is generated by an oxygen ionosphere and exosphere adapted to a profile, which depends on the solar zenith angle (Chapman layer). A comparison between observations and simulations indicates that the hybrid model is able to produce an adequate picture of the global plasma environment at Venus. The positions of the plasma boundaries are well reproduced by the model but a significant disagreement appears in the absolute values of the considered parameters.

This work reviews factors which are important for the evolution of habitable Earth-like planets such as the effects of the host star dependent radiation and particle fluxes on the evolution of atmospheres and initial water inventories. We discuss the geodynamical and geophysical environments which are necessary for planets where plate tectonics remain active over geological time scales and for planets which evolve to one-plate planets. The discoveries of methane–ethane surface lakes on Saturn’s large moon Titan, subsurface water oceans or reservoirs inside the moons of Solar System gas giants such as Europa, Ganymede, Titan and Enceladus and more than 335 exoplanets, indicate that the classical definition of the habitable zone concept neglects more exotic habitats and may fail to be adequate for stars which are different from our Sun. A classification of four habitat types is proposed. Class I habitats represent bodies on which stellar and geophysical conditions allow Earth-analog planets to evolve so that complex multi-cellular life forms may originate. Class II habitats includes bodies on which life may evolve but due to stellar and geophysical conditions that are different from the class I habitats, the planets rather evolve toward Venus- or Mars-type worlds where complex life-forms may not develop. Class III habitats are planetary bodies where subsurface water oceans exist which interact directly with a silicate-rich core, while class IV habitats have liquid water layers between two ice layers, or liquids above ice. Furthermore, we discuss from the present viewpoint how life may have originated on early Earth, the possibilities that life may evolve on such Earth-like bodies and how future space missions may discover manifestations of extraterrestrial life.

We investigate the efficiency of the atmospheric mass loss due to hydrodynamic blow-off over the lifetime of the exoplanet HD209458b by studying numerically its hydrogen wind for host star X-ray and EUV (XUV) fluxes between 1 and 100 times that of the present Sun. We apply a time-dependent numerical algorithm which is able to solve the system of hydrodynamic equations straight through the transonic point of the flow including Roche lobe effects. The mass loss rates are calculated as functions of the absorbed energy in the thermosphere. Depending on the heating efficiency for a hydrogen-rich thermosphere the maximum temperature obtained in our study at 1.5 R pl by neglecting IR cooling is about 5000–10,000 K for heating efficiencies of 10% and 60%, respectively. We find that the upper atmosphere of HD209458b experiences hydrodynamic blow-off even at such low temperatures if one does not neglect gravitational effects caused by the proximity of the planet to its Roche lobe boundary. Depending on the heating efficiency, we find from the solution of the hydrodynamic equations of mass, momentum, and energy balance that energy-limited mass loss rate estimations overestimate the realistic mass loss rate at present time for HD209458b by several times. Using the maximum heating efficiency for hydrogen–rich atmospheres of 60% we find that HD209458b may experience an atmospheric mass loss rate at present time of about 3.5 × 10 10 g s - 1 . The mass loss rate evolves to higher values for higher XUV fluxes expected during the early period of the planet's host star evolution, reaching values of several times 10 12 g s - 1 . The integrated mass loss is found to be between 1.8% and 4.4% of the present mass of HD209458b. We found that the influence of the stellar tidal forces on atmospheric loss (the Roche lobe effect) is not significant at 0.045 AU. For a similar exoplanet, but at closer orbital distances ⩽ 0.02 AU , the combined effect of the Roche lobe and the high XUV radiation result in much higher thermal loss rates of about 2.6 × 10 11 g s - 1 and even more for early stages. This leads to a total loss over 4 Gyr of 27.5% of the planetary mass.

The changing view of planets orbiting low mass stars, M stars, as potentially hospitable worlds for life and its remote detection was motivated by several factors, including the demonstration of viable atmospheres and oceans on tidally locked planets, normal incidence of dust disks, including debris disks, detection of planets with masses in the 5-20 M() range, and predictions of unusually strong spectral biosignatures. We present a critical discussion of M star properties that are relevant for the long- and short-term thermal, dynamical, geological, and environmental stability of conventional liquid water habitable zone (HZ) M star planets, and the advantages and disadvantages of M stars as targets in searches for terrestrial HZ planets using various detection techniques. Biological viability seems supported by unmatched very long-term stability conferred by tidal locking, small HZ size, an apparent short-fall of gas giant planet perturbers, immunity to large astrosphere compressions, and several other factors, assuming incidence and evolutionary rate of life benefit from lack of variability. Tectonic regulation of climate and dynamo generation of a protective magnetic field, especially for a planet in synchronous rotation, are important unresolved questions that must await improved geodynamic models, though they both probably impose constraints on the planet mass. M star HZ terrestrial planets must survive a number of early trials in order to enjoy their many Gyr of stability. Their formation may be jeopardized by an insufficient initial disk supply of solids, resulting in the formation of objects too small and/or dry for habitability. The small empirical gas giant fraction for M stars reduces the risk of formation suppression or orbit disruption from either migrating or nonmigrating giant planets, but effects of perturbations from lower mass planets in these systems are uncertain. During the first approximately 1 Gyr, atmospheric retention is at peril because of intense and frequent stellar flares and sporadic energetic particle events, and impact erosion, both enhanced, the former dramatically, for M star HZ semimajor axes. Loss of atmosphere by interactions with energetic particles is likely unless the planetary magnetic moment is sufficiently large. For the smallest stellar masses a period of high planetary surface temperature, while the parent star approaches the main sequence, must be endured. The formation and retention of a thick atmosphere and a strong magnetic field as buffers for a sufficiently massive planet emerge as prerequisites for an M star planet to enter a long period of stability with its habitability intact. However, the star will then be subjected to short-term fluctuations with consequences including frequent unpredictable variation in atmospheric chemistry and surficial radiation field. After a review of evidence concerning disks and planets associated with M stars, we evaluate M stars as targets for future HZ planet search programs. Strong advantages of M stars for most approaches to HZ detection are offset by their faintness, leading to severe constraints due to accessible sample size, stellar crowding (transits), or angular size of the HZ (direct imaging). Gravitational lensing is unlikely to detect HZ M star planets because the HZ size decreases with mass faster than the Einstein ring size to which the method is sensitive. M star Earth-twin planets are predicted to exhibit surprisingly strong bands of nitrous oxide, methyl chloride, and methane, and work on signatures for other climate categories is summarized. The rest of the paper is devoted to an examination of evidence and implications of the unusual radiation and particle environments for atmospheric chemistry and surface radiation doses, and is summarized in the Synopsis. We conclude that attempts at remote sensing of biosignatures and nonbiological markers from M star planets are important, not as tests of any quantitative theories or rational arguments, but instead because they offer an inspection of the residues from a Gyr-long biochemistry experiment in the presence of extreme environmental fluctuations. A detection or repeated nondetections could provide a unique opportunity to partially answer a fundamental and recurrent question about the relation between stability and complexity, one that is not addressed by remote detection from a planet orbiting a solar-like star, and can only be studied on Earth using restricted microbial systems in serial evolution experiments or in artificial life simulations. This proposal requires a planet that has retained its atmosphere and a water supply. The discussion given here suggests that observations of M star exoplanets can decide this latter question with only slight modifications to plans already in place for direct imaging terrestrial exoplanet missions.

The region around a star where a life-supporting biosphere can evolve is the so-called Habitable Zone (HZ). The current definition of the HZ is based only on the mass-luminosity relation of the star and climatological and meteorological considerations of Earth-like planets, but neglects atmospheric loss processes due to the interaction with the stellar radiation and particle environment. From the knowledge of the planets in the Solar System, we know that planets can only evolve into a habitable world if they have a stable orbit around its host star and if they keep the atmosphere and water inventory during: (i) the period of heavy bombardment by asteroids and comets and (ii) during the host stars’ active X-ray and extreme ultraviolet (XUV) and stellar wind periods. Impacts play a minor role for planets with the size and mass like Earth, while high XUV fluxes and strong stellar winds during the active periods of the young host star can destroy the atmospheres and water inventories. We show that XUV produced temperatures in the upper atmospheres of Earth-like planets can lead to hydrodynamic “blow off”, resulting in the total loss of the planets water inventory and atmosphere, even if their orbits lie inside the HZ. Further, our study indicates that Earth-like planets inside the HZ of low mass stars may not develop an atmosphere, because at orbital distances closer than 0.3AU, their atmospheres are highly affected by strong stellar winds and coronal mass ejections (CME’s). Our study suggests that planetary magnetospheres will not protect the atmosphere of such planets, because the strong stellar wind of the young star can compress the magnetopause to the atmospheric obstacle. Moreover, planets inside close-in HZ’s are tidally locked, therefore, their magnetic moments are weaker than those of an Earth-like planet at 1AU. Our results indicate that Earth-like planets in orbits of low mass stars may not develop stable biospheres. From this point of view, a HZ, where higher life forms like on Earth may evolve is possibly restricted to higher mass K stars and G stars.

Numerical models of the thermal budget of the Earth's upper atmosphere in the height range of 90–500km are developed. The main sources and sinks of energy including infra-red radiative cooling by vibrational-rotational bands of NO, CO 2 , OH and O 3 as well as heating and cooling arising from dissipation of turbulent energy and eddy heat transport are taken into account. The calculated temperature and density height profiles are in good agreement with the respective profiles from CIRA 72 and Jacchia 1977 models. It is shown for the models considered that IR-radiative cooling by CO 2 and NO in the 15μ and 5.3μ bands, not eddy turbulence provides the major loss of heat from 90 to 180km.

The plausible mechanisms of cooling of the nightside Venus' thermosphere are analysed with the aid of the model of the atmospheric heat budget that incorporates, in addition to thermal conduction and IR radiation in the 15 μ band of CO2, heating and cooling due to global scale winds, eddy turbulence, and IR radiation in the rotational bands of H2O and CO, as well as the 63 μ line of atomic oxygen. The H2O mixing ratio and parameters of turbulence required for cooling of the thermosphere down to the observed low temperatures are evaluated.
