The influence of uranium simulated waste water on the hydration properties of the cement was studied by modern test methods such as TAM air, XRD, FTIR, and SEM-EDS. The results show that uranium can promote the hydration of mineral C3S, and inhibit the hydration of mineral C3A. By comparing scanning of hydration products, it was found that the existence of uranium significantly changed the morphology of clinker hydration products , but uranium had little effect on the type of clinker hydration product.

Understanding the characteristics of rice productivity is of great importance for achieving high yield formation. However, such traits have not yet been studied for different ages of hydroponically grown long-mat rice seedlings (HLMS), which constitutes a new method of seedling cultivation. Field experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of seedling age on the growth stage, photosynthesis characteristics, dry matter production, and yield of HLMS. A conventional japonica rice cultivar (Wuyunjing 24) and an indica hybrid rice cultivar (6 Liangyou 9368) were used as test materials. The results showed that the whole phase was shortened by 13–15 days for young seedlings (13-day-old) compared with old seedlings (27-day-old), which occurred because the growth process accelerated with the transplantation of young seedlings. As seedling age increased, the dry matter weight of stems of individual plants and of the population increased at the transplanting stage but decreased at the maturity stage (MS). Compared with that of 27-day-old seedlings, the average ratio of panicle weight to total plant dry weight of 13-day-old seedlings during a 2-year period increased by 3.71% for Wuyunjing 24 and by 3.78% for 6 Liangyou 9368 at the MS. Moreover, as seedling age increased, the leaf area index and photosynthetic potential decreased for both cultivars, and the photosynthetic rate markedly decreased at the heading stage (HS). With the exception of that of Wuyunjing 24 from the jointing stage to the HS in 2014, the crop growth rate was higher for young seedlings than for old seedlings. Grain yield significantly decreased with seedling age, but no significant difference was detected between the 13- and 20-day-old seedlings for either cultivar. Therefore, equilibrious and high biological yield formation, vigorous growth in the late stages, and high photosynthetic production capacity are important characteristics and causes of the efficient and sustainable output of photosynthetic systems and for achieving high yield formation in young transplanted seedlings (13–20-day-old).

Background Hysterosalpingography (HSG) is an accepted radiologic diagnostic modality for initial infertility workup, and is generally considered uncomfortable and painful. However, the management of pain related to HSG remains inefficient. As an emerging nonpharmacologic and noninvasive pain control strategy, virtual reality (VR) distraction has been successfully used in areas such as burns, blunt force trauma, hospital-based needle procedures, dental/periodontal procedures, and urological endoscopy patients. This study aims to evaluate the analgesic effect of VR during HSG. Methods/design A single-center, parallel-group, randomized controlled trial will be carried out in the Radiology Department of Yinchuan Women and Children Healthcare Hospital, Yinchuan. A total of 200 participants who are scheduled for HSG will be enrolled in this study. The participants will be randomized (1:1) into two groups: a VR group and a blank control group. The VR group will receive routine care plus immersive VR intervention and the blank control group will receive routine care. Outcomes will be monitored at baseline, immediately after HSG and 15 min after HSG for each group. The primary outcome is the worst pain score during HSG by a visual analog scale (VAS). The secondary outcomes include: affective pain, cognitive pain, and anxiety during the HSG procedure; worst pain within 15 min after HSG; patient satisfaction and acceptance with pain management; physiological parameters; adverse effects; HSG results; and immersion perception score of the VR system (for the VR condition only). Discussion This study will focus on exploring a simply operated, noninvasive and low-cost analgesia during the HSG procedure. The results of this trial will provide data on the feasibility and safety of VR distraction therapy during HSG. Trial registration Chinese Clinical Trial Register, ChiCTR1900021342. Introduction. Acute pain is a prevalent problem for dementia residents in nursing homes. A variety of intervention strategies have been applied to address this problem. However, there remains an issue of inadequate pain control. This study aims to explore the analgesic efficacy of auricular acupressure (AA) for dementia residents with acute pain in nursing homes. Methods. A multicenter, single-blind, randomized, and sham-controlled clinical trial was performed in three nursing homes in Yinchuan, China. All of the 206 eligible patients with acute pain were randomly divided into two groups for real AA therapy or sham AA (at sham point stimulation) therapy. The primary outcome was measured with a face pain scale revised (FPS-R) score before the procedure, 5 min after the start of the intervention, and 5 min after finishing the procedure. Secondary outcomes covered three physiological parameters, adverse reactions observed, satisfaction level of caregivers, acceptance of patients, and additional use of analgesics. Results. There was a significant difference in pain scores based on FPS-R between the two groups ( p < 0.01 ). Pain score in the true AA group was 1.84 ± 0.23, compared with 2.22 ± 0.81 in the sham AA group. No adverse events were found during the whole procedure for all patients. The satisfaction level of caregivers and acceptance of patients in the real AA group were significantly higher than those in the sham AA group. Conclusion. This study shows that real AA was an alternative analgesic modality in reducing acute pain in patients with mild dementia.

Background Common and frequent as acute pain is, it is often underestimated and undertreated in older people with dementia in nursing homes and inadequate pain management remains an issue. Methods The study is designed to be a randomized, sham-controlled trial and is underway in nursing homes located in China. A total of 206 dementia patients are being recruited from nursing homes in Yinchuan, China. They are randomly allocated to an intervention or a controlled group in a 1:1 ratio. The intervention group will be treated with true APP therapy, while the other group will receive APP at sham point stimulation therapy. The patients will be assessed at baseline (T0), at 5 min during performing the intervention (T1), and at 5 min after completion of the intervention (T2). The primary outcome is the level of pain relief at T1 and T2. Physiological parameters, side effects and additional use of analgesics during the procedure, satisfaction from caregivers, and acceptance of patients are evaluated as secondary outcomes. Discussion The results of this study are expected to verify the analgesic effect of APP for acute pain in patients with mild dementia in nursing homes. It has the potential to prompt APP therapy to be implemented widely in dementia patients with acute pain in nursing homes. Trial registration Chinese Clinical Trial Registry ChiCTR2100047932. Background Non-alcohol fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most common chronic liver disease in the world, with a high incidence and no effective treatment. At present, the targeted therapy of intestinal microbes for NAFLD is highly valued. Lycium barbarum polysaccharide (LBP), as the main active ingredient of Lycium barbarum, is considered to be a new type of prebiotic substance, which can improve NAFLD by regulating the gut microbiota. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the safety and efficacy of LBP supplementation in modulating gut microbiota for NAFLD patients. Methods This randomized, double-blind, placebo-control study will be conducted in the physical examination center of the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region People’s Hospital. A total of 50 patients with NAFLD confirmed by abdominal ultrasound, laboratory tests, and questionnaire surveys will be recruited and randomly assigned into the control group (maltodextrin placebo capsules) and the intervention group (LBP supplementation capsules) for 3 months. Neither patients, nor investigators, nor data collectors will know the contents in each capsule and the randomization list. The primary outcome measure is the level of ALT concentration relief after the intervention. Secondary outcomes include gut microbiota abundance and diversity, intestinal permeability, patient’s characteristic demographic data and body composition, adverse effects, and compliance from patients. Discussion LBPs are potential prebiotics with the property of regulating host gut microbiota. Our previous studies have documented that LBP supplement can improve the liver damage and the gut microflora dysbiosis in NAFLD rats. This treatment would provide a more in-depth understanding of the effect of this LBP supplementation. Trial registration Chinese Clinical Trial Register, ChiCTR2000034740. Acute pain is the most common complaint in Emergency Department (ED) admissions, and options for analgesia are limited. Nitrous oxide/oxygen possesses many properties showing it may be an ideal analgesic in the ED.The aim of this study is to evaluate the safety and analgesic effect of the fixed nitrous oxide/oxygen mixture for trauma patients in the ED.We enrolled 60 patients in this double-blind, randomized study. The treatment group received conventional pain treatment plus a mixture of 65% nitrous oxide/oxygen. The control group received the conventional pain treatment plus oxygen. Primary outcome was the reduction in pain intensity at 5 and 15 min after the start of intervention. Secondary outcomes include adverse events, physiological parameters, and satisfaction from both patients and health care professionals.Initial pain scores for the nitrous oxide/oxygen group (6.0 [5.0-8.0]) and the oxygen group (6.75 [5.0-9.0]) were comparable (p = 0.57). The mean numerical rating scale scores at 5 min were 3.4 ± 1.8 and 7.0 ± 1.8 for nitrous oxide/oxygen and oxygen, respectively (p 0.01). The mean pain intensity at 15 min in the treatment group was 3.0 ± 1.9, compared with 6.3 ± 2.2 in the control group (p 0.01). Both patients' (8.0 [7.0-9.0] vs. 4.0 [2.0-6.0], p 0.01) and physicians' (8.5 [8.0-9.0] vs. 4.0 [3.0-6.0], p 0.01) satisfaction scores in the treatment group were significantly higher than the oxygen group. No serious adverse events were observed.This study gives supporting evidence for the safety and effectiveness of using self-administered nitrous oxide/oxygen mixture in the ED for moderate-to-severe traumatic pain.

Background The morbidity of knee arthritis is increasing among aged people and total knee arthroplasty has been its mainstream treatment to date. Postoperative rehabilitation is an important part of the procedure. However, the intense pain during the functional exercise involved has always been a challenge for both patients and health care professionals. The aim of this study is to test the analgesic effect of a mixture of nitrous oxide/oxygeb (1:1) inhalation for patients who are doing functional exercise 1 month after total knee arthroplasty. Methods/design This double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study will be implemented in the Rehabilitation Department in the General Hospital of Ningxia Medical University. Patients aged between 50 and 75 years who underwent a primary unilateral total knee arthroplasty are eligible for inclusion. The key exclusion criteria include: epilepsy, pulmonary embolism, intestinal obstruction, aerothorax. The treatment group (A) will receive a pre-prepared nitrous oxide/oxygen mixture plus conventional treatment (no analgesics), and the control group (B) will receive oxygen plus conventional treatment (no analgesics). Patients, physicians, therapists, and data collectors are all blind to the experiment. Assessments will be taken immediately after functional exercise begins (T0), 5 min (T1) after functional exercise begins, and 5 min after functional exercise has finished (T2). Patients will be randomly allocated between a treatment group (A) and a control group (B) in a ratio of 1:1. Primary outcome, including pain severity in the procedure, will be taken for each group. Secondary outcomes include blood pressure, heart rate, oxygen saturation, side effects, knee joint range of motion, Knee Society Score (KSS), rescue analgesia need, and satisfaction from both therapists and patients. Discussion This study will focus on exploring a fast and efficient analgesic for patients who are doing functional exercise after total knee arthroplasty. Our previous studies suggested that the prefixed nitrous oxide/oxygen mixture was an efficacious analgesic for the management of burn-dressing pain and breakthrough cancer pain. The results of this study should provide a more in-depth insight into the effects of this analgesic method. If this treatment proves successful, it could be implemented widely for patients doing functional exercise in the rehabilitation department. Trial registration ChiCTR-INR-17012891. Objective To investigate the correlations of plasma methoxyadrenaline (MN) and methoxynorepinephrine (NMN) (collectively called MNs) to blood lipid, blood glucose and blood pressure in patients with pheochromocytoma (PCC) and paraganglioma (PGL) (collectively called PPGL). Methods The clinical data were retrospectively analyzed of 64 patients with pathologically confirmed PPGL in Chinese PLA General Hospital during Jan. 2017 to Jun. 2018. According to the tertiles plasma MN before operation, the 64 cases were divided into T1 (n=21), T2 (n=21) and T3 (n=22) group, and then were divided into T'1 (n=21), T'2 (n=21) and T'3 (n=22) group according to the tertiles plasma NMN before operation. The correlations were analyzed of plasma level of MNs to the blood lipid, blood glucose and blood pressure. Results The body mass index (BMI) value decreased significantly with the increase of plasma MNs level in patients with PPGL. This study aims to investigate the biological significance of heat shock protein (HSP70) in adaptation to high altitude hypoxia.Ninety male SD rats were randomly divided into 10 groups: Acute plateau hypoxia group (group 5) and chronic high altitude hypoxia group (group 3), and control group (group 2).Changes in HSP gene and HSP protein expression in brain tissues of SD rats at different altitudes were determined by Western blot and conventional RT-PCR, while an optical and transmission electron microscope was used to observe the cell structure changes of animal brain tissues.HSP70 expression rapidly increased at high altitudes in SD rats under high-altitude hypoxia environments, and HSP70 increased with altitude. Morphological and structural damage in SD rats in each group increased with altitude.The rapid synthesis of HSP70 in heat shock response is beneficial for maintaining the normal physiological function of cells during hypoxia stress, and the amount of HSP70 production is positively correlated with hypoxia tolerance ability.

Diabetes-associated sexual dysfunction and fertility impairments are major secondary complications in diabetic patients and animal models. Natural herbs are important sources of therapeutic agents for diabetic complications. This study investigated the effect of vitexin on male sexual dysfunction and fertility impairments in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic mice. Diabetes was induced by intraperitoneal injection of 45 mg/kg STZ for 5 consecutive days in mice. Vitexin (10, 20 or 40 mg/kg) and Sildenafil citrate (SC, 5 mg/kg) were administered daily for 62 days after the induction of diabetes. The parameters of sexual behavior and fertility were analyzed. The reproductive organ weight, sperm motility, and viability of the treated mice were examined. Testicular histopathological alterations were detected by hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to evaluate serum hormonal levels. Results showed that 40 mg/kg vitexin significantly improved the sexual behavior and fertility levels compared with the diabetic group. Moreover, vitexin (20 or 40 mg/kg) significantly increased reproductive organ weight and improved testicular pathological structure damage. Meanwhile, sperm analysis demonstrated that vitexin significantly restored sperm quality in a dose-dependent manner. Furthermore, ELISA data showed that vitexin significantly increased the serum testosterone (T), follicular-stimulating hormone (FSH), and luteinizing hormone (LH) levels but decreased the gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) level to different degrees. These findings suggest that vitexin ameliorates sexual dysfunction and fertility impairments in male diabetic mice possibly by modulating the hypothalamus–pituitary–gonadal axis.

Background The pain management of postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) remains a major challenge, with no immediate relief. Nitrous oxide/oxygen mixture has the advantages of quick analgesic effect and well-tolerated. The purpose of this study is to investigate the analgesic effect and safety of nitrous oxide/oxygen mixture in patients with PHN. Methods/design This study is a single-center, two-group (1:1), randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind clinical trial. A total of 42 patients with postherpetic neuralgia will be recruited and randomly divided into the intervention group and the control group. The control group will receive routine treatment plus oxygen, and the intervention group will receive routine treatment plus nitrous oxide/oxygen mixture. Data collectors, patients, and clinicians are all blind to the therapy. The outcomes of each group will be monitored at baseline (T0), 5 min (T1), and 15 min (T2) after the start of the therapy and at 5 min after the end of the therapy (T3). The primary outcome measure will be the pain intensity. Secondary outcomes included physiological parameters, adverse effects, patients’ acceptance of analgesia, and satisfaction from patients. Discussion Previous studies have shown that nitrous oxide/oxygen mixture can effectively relieve cancer patients with breakthrough pain. This study will explore the analgesic effect of oxide/oxygen mixture on PHN. If beneficial to patients with PHN, it will contribute to the pain management of PHN. Background: Early-stage osteoarthritis (OA) is characterized by articular subchondral bone resorption and emerging evidence suggests that mechanical overloading is likely involved. Here, we identified whether and why mechanical overloading could trigger subchondral bone resorption in early-stage OA. Methods: A new mechanical overloading monitoring system for real-time pressure measurement in situ in vivo and a numerically controlled loading device for tissue pressurized culture in vitro were developed. Micro-CT was used to analyze the alterations of microarchitecture in subchondral bone and TRAP staining was harnessed to measure osteoclast differentiation of macrophages. Real-time qPCR, Western blot, ELISA, and immunostaining were conducted to clarify the expression, location, and interaction of relative proteins. Findings: Temporomandibular joint disc displacement yielded about 5 times higher pressure on the articular surface than that of the controls, causing subchondral bone resorption in 3-7 days after disc displacement. RANTES was increased in synovial fluid in early-stage OA in human and expressed in condylar cartilage of rat OA model at 1 week after disc displacement. Mechanistically, RANTES could promote osteoclast recruitment and formation through binding to its receptors CCRs and activating Akt2 pathway. Either Blockade of CCRs or Knockdown of Akt2 rescued RANTES-mediated osteoclast differentiation in vitro . Knockdown of Akt2 prevented the early subchondral bone resorption in OA in vivo. Interpretation: This study unravels a novel mechanism that disc displacement-induced mechanical overloading activates the RANTES-CCRs-Akt2 axis, which plays a critical initial role for the early condylar bone resorption in OA. To detect the expression of MutT homolog 1 (MTH1) in CD138-negative cells (CD138-) and CD138-positive cells (CD138+) cells of the patients with multiple myeloma (MM), and to explore the effect of MTH1 inhibitor TH588 on cell morphology, proliferation and apoptosis of MM cell U266.CD138- and CD138+ cells of MM patients were isolated, and RNA was extracted. The expression of NUDT family was detected by Q-PCR. MM cell line U266 was used to observe the effect of IL-6 on MTH1 expression. Using fluorescence microscopy to observe the morphological changes of U266 after treatment by TH588 for 48 hours. DAPI staining was used to investigate the nuclear change. Luciferase was used to detect the effect of TH588 on U266 cell proliferation. After treatment with TH588 for 48 h, the change of apoptosis in MM U266 cells was detected by flow cytometer.In some MM patients, the expression of MTH1, NUDT2, NUDT5 and NUDT21 in CD138+ cells was higher than that in CD138- (P0.05). The luciferase report showed that after treatment of U266 cells with TH588, the fluorescence intensity was significantly lower than that of the control group, and the fluorescence intensity decreased with the increase of drug concentration (r=-0.91). IL-6 could increase the expression of MTH1. Fluorescence microscopy showed that after TH588 treatment of U266 cells for 48 hours, the cells appeared shrinking, smaller, and irregular in shape. After DAPI staining, the TH588-treated cells showed apoptosis characteristics, such as nuclear shrinkage, uneven staining, petal, and radial shape. Flow cytometry showed that the proportion of U266 viable cells decreased significantly after treatment with TH588 for 48 h (P0.05).MTH1 highly expresses in CD138+ cells of some MM patients. MTH1 expression can increase in U266 cells treated by IL-6. To systematically review the effectiveness and safety of Pudilan Xiaoyan Oral Liquid on child upper respiratory infection and conduct Meta-analysis. We electronically retrieved databases, including PubMed, Web of Science, VIP, WanFang and CNKI, for published articles of randomized controlled trials(RCTs) of Pudilan Xiaoyan Oral Liquid on child upper respiratory infection from inception to April 2019. According to the inclusion and exclusion criteria, two reviewers independently screened out literatures, extracted data and assessed the risk of bias in included studies. Then, Meta-analysis were conducted by Stata 15.0 software. A total of 16 RCTs involving 1 924 patients with upper respiratory infection were included. The results of Meta-analysis showed that the improvement of clinical symptoms, such as fever subsided time(WMD=-3.66, 95%CI[-4.61,-2.72], Plt;0.001), cough time(WMD=-1.89, 95%CI[-2.51,-1.27], Plt;0.001), time of runny noses(WMD=-4.60, 95%CI[-5.85,-3.34], Plt;0.001) and time of sore throat(WMD=-2.62, 95%CI[-3.54,-1.70], Plt;0.001). Meanwhile, the results of Meta-analysis showed the improvement of laboratory indications, including TNF-α(WMD=-2.68, 95%CI[-2.98,-1.58], Plt;0.001) and IL-6(WMD=-2.26, 95%CI[-3.36,-2.36], Plt;0.01). The current evidence shows that Pudilan Xiaoyan Oral Liquid may significantly improve the effectiveness and safety. According to the limited quality of included studies, the above conclusion needs be to verified with more high-quality studies.

This study aims to evaluate the safety and analgesic efficacy of pre-mixed nitrous oxide/oxygen mixture treatment of pain induced by dressing change for perianal abscess.This protocol is a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial.This study will be implemented in the Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Subjects enrolled in this study are hospitalized patients who suffered from moderate to severe pain due to dressing change after incision and drainage. Two hundred patients will be selected and randomly assigned to either an intervention or a control group. The intervention group will get routine pain treatment plus pre-mixed nitrous oxide/oxygen mixture treatment and the control group will be treated with routine pain management plus medical air treatment. All these patients, medical staff and investigators are blind to the nature of the gas in each cylinder, which is randomized. Data will be collected at baseline (T0), 5 min (T1) after the starting of intervention and 5 min post intervention (T2) for each group. The primary outcome is the level of pain relief at T1 and T2. Testicular dysfunction is one of the serious secondary complications in diabetes. Lycium barbarum polysaccharide (LBP) has long been considered to possess a wide range of beneficial properties including antiaging, anticancer and reproductive-enhancing. Abnormal autophagy was reported to play a significant role in accelerating diabetic reproductive injury. However, the autophagy regulation mechanism of LBP on diabetic testicular dysfunction is incompletely understood. We investigate the protective effects of LBP on diabetic testicular dysfunction and its underlying mechanism with different approaches. Protective effects of LBP (40 mg/kg) on testicular functions were assessed through the use of sperm parameters, testosterone levels and hematoxylin and eosin staining. Antioxidant capacity and serum malondialdehyde levels were determined using assay kits. Immune intensity of Beclin-1 and LC3I in testes was detected by immunofluorescence staining. Western blot analysis was used to detect expressions of p-PI3K, Akt, p-Akt, Beclin-1, LC3I and LC3II proteins. Q-PCR was used to evaluate Beclin-1 and LC3I mRNA expressions in testis. Administration of LBP (40 mg/kg) considerably recovered testicular function, obviously improved testicular histopathologic structure and significantly increased antioxidant enzyme activities. Immunofluorescence staining showed that immune intensity of Beclin-1 and LC3I significantly decreased in the LBP 40 mg/kg group. The results of Q-PCR and western blot analysis showed that LBP 40 mg/kg significantly downregulated Beclin-1 and LC3I protein expressions upregulated p-PI3K and p-Akt protein expressions and decreased Beclin-1 and LC3I mRNA expressions compared with diabetic mice. In conclusion, inhibition of PI3K/Akt pathway-mediated testicular excessive autophagy may be a target for protective effects of LBP on diabetic testicular dysfunction.

The aim of the study was to elucidate the therapeutic effects of Cytisine (CYT) on cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury in mice. Male ICR mice were pretreated with reagents (drug), and then subjected to 2 h focal cerebral ischemia and 24 h reperfusion. Morphologically, the histopathological impairment were estimated by the TTC, HE and TUNEL staining. The expression of GluN2B-containing NMDA receptor, phosphorylation of extracellular regulated protein kinases, total ERK, phosphorylation of cAMP-response element binding protein and total CREB were determined by immunofluorescence and Western blot assay, respectively. The mRNA expression of NR2B, ERK and CREB were quantified by the real-time RT-PCR. CYT significantly diminished the infarct size and neuronal apoptosis. Additionally, it ameliorated histopathological lesion dramatically. CYT promoted the phosphorylation of ERK, CREB and their mRNA expression. In contrast, the expression of NR2B was suppressed in concomitant with the down-regulation of genes. The overall results thus far suggest that CYT confers the neuroprotection against cerebral I/R injury by regulating the NR2B-ERK/CREB signal pathway.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a major health problem that affects patients' quality of life quality throughout the world due to its many complications. Reproductive dysfunction is one of the major secondary complications in both diabetic animals and human beings. Furthermore, DM has recently broken the age barrier and has been heavily diagnosed in children and young persons of reproductive age. In the past few years, many studies on DM in male reproductive functions in both diabetic men and experimental diabetic animals have been published. It is recognized that sustained hyperglycemia, which impairs reproductive function in diabetic men, is at risk of developing. DM harmfully affects male reproductive functions in multiple areas; these may include spermatogenesis, sperm maturation, fertility capability, penile erection, and ejaculation. Traditional medicine and folklore worldwide have used numerous medicinal plants to manage the diabetic reproductive dysfunction because bioactive phyto-constituents are affluent in many places. Unfortunately, the exact reasons for diabetic male reproductive dysfunction are not completely understood and currently there are no treatments in reproductive medicine specifically for such lesions. The aim of this review is to summarize current research findings of DM on reproductive functions, to elaborate the underlying mechanisms related to these diseases via in vivo and in vitro studies, and to describe the ameliorative effects of medicinal plants or their products. The review findings provide a systematic understanding of DM on the reproductive functions and lay the theoretical foundation for developing the direction of reproductive medicine.

Increasing evidence demonstrates inflammation contributes to neuronal death following cerebral ischemia. Lycium barbarum polysaccharide (LBP) has been reported to prevent scopolamine-induced cognitive and memory deficits. We recently indicated that LBP exerts neuroprotective effect against focal cerebral ischemic injury in mice via attenuating the mitochondrial apoptosis pathway. The aim of this study was to investigate the neuroprotective effects of LBP against the behavioral dysfunction induced by focal cerebral ischemia injury in mice. Following 7 successive days of pretreatment with LBP (10, 20 and 40 mg/kg) and nimodipine (4 mg/kg) by intragastric gavage, mice were subjected to middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO). Following reperfusion, cerebral blood flows, the total power of the spontaneous EEG, and morphological changes were estimated. Learning and memory ability, and motor coordination were determined by Morris water maze task, rotarod and grip test. Western blot analysis, Real-Time fluorogenic PCR assays, and immunofluorescence staining were used to examine the expression of proinflammatory mediators and activation of microglia. The present study showed that LBP pretreatment significantly enhanced regional cortical blood flow and the total power of the spontaneous EEG, improved memory and motor coordination impairments, and inhibited over-activation of microglia and astrocytes after MCAO. Further study demonstrated LBP suppressed MCAO-induced activations of P65 NF-κB and P38 MAPK, and prevented up-regulations of proinflammatory mediators in hippocampus. Our data suggest that LBP can exert functional recovery of memory and motor coordination deficits and neuroprotective effect against cerebral ischemic injury in mice.

Spermatogenic dysfunction is one of the major secondary complications of diabetes. L. barbarum polysaccharide (LBP) has long been considered to possess anti-apoptotic activities and antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and fertility-enhancing properties in traditional medical practices in China. The aim of the current study was to seek out scientific evidence to determine if LBP also contributes to the recovery from spermatogenic dysfunction in diabetic individuals. We investigated whether the oral administration of LBP in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced type-1 diabetic male mice would reverse spermatogenic dysfunction and improve histological damage in testes. After the oral administration of LBP (10, 20 or 40 mg kg−1, respectively), sildenafil citrate (5 mg kg−1) or saline for 62 consecutive days, the sperm parameters were analyzed. Macroscopic and microscopic changes in the reproductive organs, including their weight, and photomicroscope and electronmicroscope images were also assessed. In addition, the antioxidant capacity and levels of malondialdehyde in the testes were determined according to the instructions provided with the assay kits and the expression of the apoptosis-related proteins, Caspase-3, Bax and Bcl-2, in the testes was analyzed using western-blot analysis. LBP treatment of diabetic mice considerably recovered the sperm parameters, increased the weight of the reproductive organs, ameliorated their histological appearance and increased antioxidant enzyme activity to different degrees. Moreover, our data also showed a marked decrease in Caspase-3 expression and an increase in the ratio of Bcl-2/Bax 43 after LBP administration (40 mg kg−1) when compared to the diabetic group. These results demonstrate that LBP exerts protective effects on diabetes induced male spermatogenic dysfunction, which is likely to be mediated through increasing antioxidant enzyme activities and inhibiting cell death.

Background:Perianal abscess is mainly treated by surgery in the clinic. However, the pain induced by dressing is the most prominent problem in postoperative patients and available analgesics is limited. The short- acting analgesia, premixed nitrous oxide/ oxygen, may be an ideal analgesic for acute pain induced by dressing change after perianal abscess surgery. This study aims to evaluate the safety and analgesic efficacy of premixed nitrous oxide/oxygen mixture for patients with dressing change after surgery around the anus. Methods/design:This protocol for a randomized, double-blind, placebo- controlled trial will be implemented in the Anorectal Department, Yinchuan Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine affiliated to Ningxia Medical University. Study subjects are hospitalized patients underwent perianal abscess surgery and suffered from moderate to severe pain due to dressing. Two hundred subjects will be selected and randomly assigned to other intervention or control group. The intervention group will get regular pain treatment plus premixed nitrous oxide/oxygen and the control group will be treated with regular pain treatment plus oxygen. The patients, medical staffs or investigators are blinded to the nature of the gas mixture in each cylinder and the randomization list. Data will be collected at baseline (T0, 2 min before dressing) and at 5 min (T1) after the beginning of intervention and at 5 min (T2) past dressing. The primary outcome will be the change in pain score at T1 and T2. Secondary outcomes cover physiological parameters, adverse events, patients and medical staffs’ satisfaction as well as patients’ acceptance. Discussion:The findings of this trial will provide a valuable therapeutic regimen for pain caused by dressing after perianal abscess surgery and identify the efficacy and safety of the gas.

Aim: As many as 83% of patients with dementia living in nursing homes have complained about pain. Acute exacerbation of chronic pain in elderly patients can have a serious impact on psychology and even attempt suicide. However, the effectiveness the drugs recommended for the elderly are limited, and these older people are more prone to have drug-related side effects. The aim of this study is to identify the analgesic efficacy of auricular point acupressure (APA) for acute exacerbation of chronic pain in patients with dementia in nursing homes. Methods: The study is designed to be a randomized, sham-controlled trial and is underway in a nursing home located in northwest of China. A total of 218 dementia patients with acute exacerbation of chronic pain and a score of pain≥4 on the Changhai Pain Rating Scale is being recruited from Bangniqinchun Nursing Home in Yinchuan, China and randomly allocated to accept either an intervention or a sham-controlled group in a 1:1 ratio. While the intervention group will be given APA therapy, the other group will receive sham APP treatment. The recruiters will be assessed at baseline (T0), at 5 min (T1) during treatment, and at 5 min post intervention (T2). The primary endpoint is the Changhai Pain Rating Scale mean change for pain at T0, T1, and T2 after the initial intervention. Physiological parameters, side effects and additional use of analgesics during the intervention, satisfaction from caregivers, acceptance of patients are evaluated as the secondary outcomes. Discussions: The results of this study are expected to prove the analgesic effect of APA for acute pain in patients with dementia. If providing scientifically sound results, it will have the potential to be the basis of the evidence-based guidelines for physical therapists in clinical practice and to be implemented widely in pain patients with dementia in nursing home.

Oxidative stress plays a vital role in the development of cerebral ischemic/reperfusion (I/R). Targeting oxidative stress is proposed to be an effective strategy to treat cerebral I/R injury. Gentiana macrophylla Pall is reported to have a potential protective effect against stroke. Swertiamarin (Swe), an active secoiridoid glycoside compound isolated from Gentiana macrophylla Pall, has been reported to possess antioxidative potential. This study is to explore whether Swe could prevent brain from I/R injury, and the related mechanisms of oxidative stress are also elucidated using mice middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) model and primary hippocampal neurons oxygen-glucose deprivation/reperfusion (OGD/R) model. Swe (25, 100, or 400 mg/kg) was pretreated intraperitoneally for 7 days until establishment of the MCAO model, while hippocampal neurons were maintained in Swe (0.1, 1, or 10 μM) in the entire process of reoxygenation. The results indicated that Swe pretreatment markedly decreased infarct volume, apoptotic neurons, and oxidative damage and promoted neurologic recovery in vivo. It also decreased reactive oxygen species (ROS) and increased cell viability in vitro. Western blot analyses and immunofluorescence staining demonstrated that Swe pretreatment promoted Nrf2 nuclear translocation from Keap1-Nrf2 complex and enhanced the expressions of NAD(P)H: quinone oxidoreductase-1 (NQO1) and heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) both in vivo and in vitro, while the expressions could be reversed by a Nrf2 inhibitor. The binding mode of Keap1 with Swe was also proposed by covalent molecular docking. Collectively, Swe could be considered as a promising protective agent against cerebral I/R injury through suppressing oxidative stress by activation of the Nrf2 protective pathway.

Context Leukemia is the most common cancer in the childhood population. Lumbar puncture (LP) plays central role in the diagnosis and treatment process, but options for analgesia are limited. Objectives The present study aims to evaluate the efficacy of a fixed N2O/O2 mixture to reduce pain in children with leukemia during LP as compared with placebo. Methods A double-blind, placebo-controlled, and randomized clinical trial involving children who needed LP for diagnosis or treatment was conducted in the pediatrics department of the General Hospital of Ningxia Medical University. Eligible patients were randomly assigned to inhale either a fixed N2O/O2 mixture or O2. The primary endpoint was the maximal pain level felt by the patient during the procedure measured using a numerical rating scale (0–10). Results One-hundred fourteen consecutive patients were enrolled in this study and randomized. Pain scores during the procedure showed a significant decrease in N2O/O2 mixture–treated patients to 1.05 ± 1.40 versus 8.00 ± 2.13 in controls (P Conclusions This study demonstrated that self-administered fixed N2O/O2 is efficient to reduce pain related to LP in children with leukemia.

The basic oxygen furnace slag generated during steelmaking can be reused as aggregates in civil engineering because of its chemical composition and technological properties. However, the utilization of steel slag in practical applications is quite low due to its low volume stability. In this work, highly stable slag is obtained by the environmental-friendly self-disintegration high pressure (SDHP) process. In this method, the molten slag is initially crushed to form numerous small bulks. Subsequently, the slag bulks are treated by the self-disintegration process at a high pressure to obtain the highly stable steel slag. Thermodynamic evaluation and experimental investigation reveal that high pressure of steam promotes the hydration reaction. At a pressure of 0.2 MPa, the free lime (f-CaO) content and immersion expansion rate of the steel slag treated by this method are reduced to 1.5% and 0.9%, respectively. Both of these values satisfy the requirements specified in the national standards (GB/T 25029-2010 and GB/T 20491-2006). Moreover, the treatment time is reduced to 1.5 h, which is far lower than the treatment times required for traditional methods.
