Background This study aims to compare the epidemiological, clinical and laboratory characteristics between patients with coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and influenza A (H1N1), and to develop a differentiating model and a simple scoring system. Methods We retrospectively analyzed the data from patients with COVID-19 and H1N1. The logistic regression model based on clinical and laboratory characteristics was constructed to distinguish COVID-19 from H1N1. Scores were assigned to each of independent discrimination factors based on their odds ratios. The performance of the prediction model and scoring system was assessed. Results A total of 236 patients were recruited, including 20 COVID-19 patients and 216 H1N1 patients. Logistic regression revealed that age >34 years, temperature ≤37.5 °C, no sputum or myalgia, lymphocyte ratio ≥20% and creatine kinase-myocardial band isoenzyme (CK-MB) >9.7 U/L were independent differentiating factors for COVID-19. The area under curves (AUCs) of the prediction model and scoring system in differentiating COVID-19 from H1N1 were 0.988 and 0.962, respectively. Conclusions There are certain differences in clinical and laboratory features between patients with COVID-19 and H1N1. The simple scoring system may be a useful tool for the early identification of COVID-19 patients from H1N1 patients.

A comparative study of the third-order nonlinear optical properties, via the newly developed heterodyned optical Kerr effect (OHD-OKE) measurements, of silver phenylacetylide and related compounds is reported. [AgC[triple bond]CC(6)H(5)](n) (1) was found to exhibit efficient third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility chi((3)) of 2.4 x 10(-14) esu, and second hyperpolarizability gamma of 9.07 x 10(-32) esu. These results are compared with those of two related silver phenylacetylide compounds, namely, a double salt, (silver phenylacetylide).(silver tert-butylthiolate) [AgC[triple bond]CC(6)H(5).AgS(t-C(4)H(9))](n) complex (2), and a cluster, triphenylphosphine silver phenylacetylide tetramer, [(C(6)H(5))(3)PAgC[triple bond]CC(6)H(5)](4) (3), as well as that of the related organic polymer polyphenylacetylene (4). These four compounds represent different types of phenylacetylide derivatives: 1 is an organometallic polymer, 2 a polymeric double salt, 3 a discrete metal cluster, and 4 an organic polymer. It was found that the third-order optical nonlinear response was enhanced by the incorporation of silver d electrons into the delocalized conjugated organic pi system, and its magnitude is highly dependent upon the extent of the pi delocalization. Specifically, the relative magnitudes of chi((3)) and gamma follow the order silver phenylacetylide polymer (1)(silver phenylacetylide).(silver tert-butylthiolate) double salt (2)polyphenylacetylene polymer (4)tetrameric (triphenylphosphine silver phenylacetylide)(4) cluster (3). The observed trend may be attributed to the decreasing length of pi conjugation. It is interesting to note that the incorporation of Ag(I) into the polymeric framework of polyphenylacetylene enhances the chi((3)) by 25-fold for the same degree of polymerization (n = 7). The signs of chi((3)) and gamma, which are related to the response mechanisms, were found to be solvent dependent.

To study the effects of B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) preconditioning on the apoptosis and expressions of Bcl-2 and Bax in rat cardiomyocytes during myocardial ischemia-reperfusion.Twenty-one male Sprague-Dawley rats weighing (250 ± 50) g were randomly divided into 3 groups of sham operation (SHAM), ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) and B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP). A rat model of in vivo myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury was established by ligating the left anterior descending coronary artery for 35 minutes and then reperfusing for 240 minutes. The apoptosis of myocardial cell was determined by terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase mediated dUTP-biotin nick end-labeling (TUNEL) method. Real-time polymerase chain reaction and Western blot were used to detect the expression changes of Bcl-2 and Bax in rat ischemia myocardium.The apoptotic indices of SHAM, BNP and I/R groups were 5.4% ± 4.2%, 22.5% ± 9.5% and 45.2% ± 13.0% respectively (P0.05). The Bcl-2 protein expression of SHAM, BNP and I/R groups were 0.87 ± 0.09, 0.70 ± 0.07 and 0.38 ± 0.09 respectively (P0.05). The Bax protein expression of SHAM, BNP and I/R groups were 0.08 ± 0.04, 0.39 ± 0.09 and 0.71 ± 0.18 respectively (P0.01). The Bcl-2/Bax mRNA ratio of SHAN, BNP and I/R groups were 0.763 ± 0.154, 0.099 ± 0.025 and 0.022 ± 0.024 respectively (P0.05).The BNP preconditioning can decrease the myocardial apoptosis induced by ischemia-reperfusion injury. The mechanisms may be associated with an elevated expression of Bcl-2, an increased ratio of Bcl-2/Bax and a lowered expression of Bax.
