Experiments and observations suggest that they contribute to terrestrial soil biodiversity and function, yet their ecological contribution to soil has never been assessed globally under natural conditions. Here we conducted the most comprehensive global standardized field study to quantify how soil mosses influence 8 ecosystem services associated with 24 soil biodiversity and functional attributes across wide environmental gradients from all continents. We found that soil mosses are associated with greater carbon sequestration, pool sizes for key nutrients and organic matter decomposition rates but a lower proportion of soil-borne plant pathogens than unvegetated soils. Mosses are especially important for supporting multiple ecosystem services where vascular-plant cover is low. Globally, soil mosses potentially support 6.43 Gt more carbon in the soil layer than do bare soils. The amount of soil carbon associated with mosses is up to six times the annual global carbon emissions from any altered land use globally. The largest positive contribution of mosses to soils occurs under a high cover of mat and turf mosses, in less-productive ecosystems and on sandy and salty soils. Yet, the environmental drivers of soil C and its sensitivity to warming are still poorly understood globally. Here we use soil samples from 56 paired urban greenspaces and natural ecosystems worldwide and combine soil C concentration and size fractionation measures with metagenomics and warming incubations. We show that surface soils in urban and natural ecosystems sustain similar C concentrations that follow comparable negative relationships with temperature. Plant productivity’s contribution to explaining soil C was higher in natural ecosystems, while in urban ecosystems, the soil microbial biomass had the greatest explanatory power. Moreover, the soil microbiome supported a faster C mineralization rate with experimental warming in urban greenspaces compared with natural ecosystems. Distinguishing the respective contributions of various microbes to methylmercury (MeHg) production is critical for predicting MeHg bioaccumulation and exposure risk. Metabolic inhibitors have been commonly used to block the activity of specific microbial groups and identify primary Hg methylating microbes. By reviewing literatures and our empirical data, we demonstrate how multiple factors, including (1) the addition of inappropriate amounts of inhibitors, (2) a tendency to overlook microbial syntrophy, and (3) the absence of comprehensive proxy systems of Hg methylation, would impact result interpretation of this approach. We thus suggest that the design of inhibition assays should consider the environmental properties, e.g., background levels of electron acceptors, concentrations of metabolic substrates, and abundances of Hg methylating microbes. We also recommend that inhibitors should be added at multiple concentrations and that observed changes in Hg methylation should be assessed with comprehensive indicators. Revealing the key factors responsible for the improper usage of this method and inadequate interpretation of the results would help optimize inhibition assays for robust predictions of MeHg production in nature.

Here we conducted a standardized survey of urban greenspaces from 56 municipalities across six continents, aiming to investigate the relationships of plant and soil biodiversity (diversity of bacteria, fungi, protists and invertebrates, and metagenomics-based functional diversity) with 18 surrogates of ecosystem functions from nine ecosystem services. We found that soil biodiversity across biomes was significantly and positively correlated with multiple dimensions of ecosystem functions, and contributed to key ecosystem services such as microbially driven carbon pools, organic matter decomposition, plant productivity, nutrient cycling, water regulation, plant–soil mutualism, plant pathogen control and antibiotic resistance regulation. Plant diversity only indirectly influenced multifunctionality in urban greenspaces via changes in soil conditions that were associated with soil biodiversity. These findings were maintained after controlling for climate, spatial context, soil properties, vegetation and management practices. 10 páginas- 4 figuras.- referencias.- Additional supporting information can be found online in the Supporting Information section at the end of this article, Microbial residues contribute to the long-term stabilization of carbon in the entire soil profile, helping to regulate the climate of the planet; however, how sensitive these residues are to climatic seasonality remains virtually unknown, especially for deep soils across environmental gradients. Here, we investigated the changes of microbial residues along soil profiles (0–100 cm) from 44 typical ecosystems with a wide range of climates (~3100 km transects across China). Our results showed that microbial residues account for a larger portion of soil carbon in deeper (60–100 cm) vs. shallower (0–30 and 30–60 cm) soils. Moreover, we find that climate especially challenges the accumulation of microbial residues in deep soils, while soil properties and climate share their roles in controlling the residue accumulation in surface soils. Climatic seasonality, including positive correlations with summer precipitation and maximum monthly precipitation, as well as negative correlations with temperature annual range, are important factors explaining microbial residue accumulation in deep soils across China. In particular, summer precipitation is the key regulator of microbial-driven carbon stability in deep soils, which has 37.2% of relative independent effects on deep-soil microbial residue accumulation. Yet this relationship has not been globally assessed outside laboratory experiments. Here, using two independent global standardized field surveys, and a range of natural and human factors, we test the relationship between the number of environmental stressors exceeding different critical thresholds and the maintenance of multiple ecosystem services across biomes. Our analysis shows that having multiple stressors, from medium levels (>50%), negatively and significantly correlates with impacts on ecosystem services and that having multiple stressors crossing a high-level critical threshold (over 75% of maximum observed levels) reduces soil biodiversity and functioning globally. The number of environmental stressors exceeding the >75% threshold was consistently seen as an important predictor of multiple ecosystem services, therefore improving prediction of ecosystem functioning. Biochar amendment is one of the most promising agricultural approaches to tackle climate change by enhancing soil carbon (C) sequestration. Microbial-mediated decomposition processes are fundamental for the fate and persistence of sequestered C in soil, but the underlying mechanisms are uncertain. Here, we synthesise 923 observations regarding the effects of biochar addition (over periods ranging from several weeks to several years) on soil C-degrading enzyme activities from 130 articles across five continents worldwide. Our results showed that biochar addition increased soil ligninase activity targeting complex phenolic macromolecules by 7.1%, but suppressed cellulase activity degrading simpler polysaccharides by 8.3%. These shifts in enzyme activities explained the most variation of changes in soil C sequestration across a wide range of climatic, edaphic and experimental conditions, with biochar-induced shift in ligninase:cellulase ratio correlating negatively with soil C sequestration. The bioaccumulation of the neurotoxin methylmercury (MeHg) in rice is a significant concern due to its potential risk to humans. Thiols have been known to affect MeHg bioavailability in microorganisms, but how thiols influence MeHg accumulation in rice plants remains unknown. Here, we investigated effects of common low-molecular-weight thiols, including cysteine (Cys), glutathione (GSH), and penicillamine (PEN), on MeHg uptake and translocation by rice plants. Results show that rice roots can rapidly take up MeHg, and this process is influenced by the types and concentrations of thiols in the system. The presence of Cys facilitated MeHg uptake by roots and translocation to shoots, while GSH could only promote MeHg uptake, but not translocation, by roots. Conversely, PEN significantly inhibited MeHg uptake and translocation to shoots. Using labeled

Agricultural soils are important reservoirs for antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), which have close linkage to human health via crop production. Metal stress in environments may function as a selection pressure for antibiotic resistomes. However, there is still a lack of field studies focusing on the effect of historical mercury (Hg) contamination on antibiotic resistomes in agricultural soils. Here, we explored the ARG profile in soils with different cropping systems (paddy and upland) and linked them to legacy Hg exposure. We found that ARG profiles were significantly different between paddy and upland soils. However, both paddy and upland soils with long-term field Hg contamination harbored higher diversity and abundance of ARGs than non-polluted soils. The co-occurrence network reveals significant associations among Hg, Hg resistance genes, mobile genetic elements (MGEs), and ARGs. Together with path analysis showing legacy Hg possibly affecting soil resistomes through the shifts of soil microbiota, Hg resistance genes, and MGEs, we suggest that legacy Hg-induced potential co-selection might elevate the ARG level. Redundancy analysis further supports that legacy Hg pollution had a significant association with ARG variations in the paddy and upland soils (P < 0.01). Collectively, our results highlight the underappreciated role of legacy Hg as a potential persistent selecting agent in contributing to soil ARGs in agroecosystems.

13 páginas.- 6 figuras.- 72 referencias., Warming is known to reduce soil carbon (C) stocks by promoting microbial respiration, which is associated with the decomposition of microbial residue carbon (MRC). However, the relative contribution of MRC to soil organic carbon (SOC) across temperature gradients is poorly understood. Here, we investigated the contribution of MRC to SOC along two independent elevation gradients of our model system (i.e., the Tibetan Plateau and Shennongjia Mountain in China). Our results showed that local temperature increases were negatively correlated with MRC and SOC. Further analyses revealed that rising temperature reduced SOC via decreasing MRC, which helps to explain future reductions in SOC under climate warming. Our findings demonstrate that climate warming has the potential to reduce C sequestration by increasing the decomposition of MRC, exacerbating the positive feedback between rising temperature and CO2 efflux. Our study also considered the influence of multiple environmental factors such as soil pH and moisture, which were more important in controlling SOC than microbial traits such as microbial life-style strategies and metabolic efficiency. Mercury (Hg) can be converted to neurotoxic methylmercury (MeHg) by certain microbes typically in anaerobic environments, threatening human health due to its bioaccumulation in food webs. However, it is unclear whether and how Hg can be methylated in legacy aerobic uplands with increasing water. Here, we conducted a series of incubation experiments to investigate the effects of increased water content on MeHg production in two typical upland soils (i.e., long-term and short-term use). Results showed that marked MeHg production occurred in water-saturated upland soils, which was strongly correlated with the proportions of significantly stimulated Hg methylating taxon (i.e., Geobacter). Elevated temperature further enhanced MeHg production by blooming proportions of typical Hg methylators (i.e., Clostridium, Acetonema, and Geobacter). Water saturation could also enhance microbial Hg methylation by facilitating microbial syntrophy between non-Hg methylators and Hg methylators. Taken together, the present work suggests that uplands could turn into a potential MeHg reservoir in response to water inputs resulting from rainfall or anthropogenic irrigation.

In this perspective, we outline that a space borne gravitational wave detector network combining LISA and Taiji can be used to measure the Hubble constant with an uncertainty less than 0.5% in ten years, compared with the network of the ground based gravitational wave detectors which can measure the Hubble constant within a 2% uncertainty in the next five years by the standard siren method. Taiji is a Chinese space borne gravitational wave detection mission planned for launch in the early 2030 s. The pilot satellite mission Taiji-1 has been launched in August 2019 to verify the feasibility of Taiji. The results of a few technologies tested on Taiji-1 are presented in this paper. Gravitational wave astronomy has opened the door to test general relativity and the effect of gravity in the Universe. The authors present the capabilities of an overlap between space gravitational wave detectors LISA and Taiji to constrain the Hubble constant to 0.5%, in 10 years, and what can be learned from the satellite pilot Taiji-1 launched in 2019.

This paper presents a common-drain-based operational amplifier (OPAMP) fabricated by mono n-type indium-zinc-oxide (IZO) thin-film transistors (TFTs). Positive feedback technology is employed to the load TFTs by cross-coupled connection in order to boost the voltage gain of the common-drain differential pair. The OPAMP exhibits an open-loop voltage gain (Av) of 27 dB over a −3 dB bandwidth (BW) of 8.4 kHz at a DC supply voltage of 10 V. The measured unity-gain frequency (UGF), phase margin (PM) and DC power consumption are 119.4 kHz, 36° and 0.96 mW, respectively. Moreover, the chip area of the proposed OPAMP is as small as 0.37 mm $\times0.3$ mm since this concise topology needs only 10 TFTs.

Graphical abstract, Heavy metal(loid)s exert selective pressure on microbial communities and evolution of metal resistance determinants. Despite increasing knowledge concerning the impact of metal pollution on microbial community and ecological function, it is still a challenge to identify a consistent pattern of microbial community composition along gradients of elevated metal(loid)s in natural environments. Further, our current knowledge of the microbial metal resistome at the community level has been lagging behind compared to the state-of-the-art genetic profiling of bacterial metal resistance mechanisms in a pure culture system. This review provides an overview of the core metal resistant microbiome, development of metal resistance strategies, and potential factors driving the diversity and distribution of metal resistance determinants in natural environments. The impacts of biotic factors regulating the bacterial metal resistome are highlighted. We finally discuss the advances in multiple technologies, research challenges, and future directions to better understand the interface of the environmental microbiome with the metal resistome. This review aims to highlight the diversity and wide distribution of heavy metal(loid)s and their corresponding resistance determinants, helping to better understand the resistance strategy at the community level.

This article presents a novel design of high-speed ring oscillator (RO) in ${n}$ -type-only indium-zinc-oxide (IZO) thin-film transistor (TFT) technology. The proposed ROs combine the advantage of the skewed delay (SD) scheme and the bootstrap inverter to achieve a higher oscillation frequency. The design of improved output buffers with stronger driving capability is also included. For comparison, the proposed seven-stage SD ROs and the conventional bootstrap RO are fabricated on the same glass. It is measured that the oscillation frequencies of the SD ROs with $-{t}_{{\text {pd}}}$ and 0 SD are improved by more than 45% and 25% within the supply voltage ranges from 6 V up to 20 V. In addition, the measured output swings of the proposed boost buffers are improved by more than 50% with input frequencies higher than megahertz.

Microorganisms are the fundamental drivers of soil microbial respiration and its response to warming; however, the specific microbial communities and properties involved in the process remain largely undetermined. Here, we identified the associations between microbial community and temperature sensitivity (Q10) of soil microbial respiration in alpine forests along an altitudinal gradient (from 2974 to 3558 m) from the climate-sensitive Tibetan Plateau. Our results showed that changes in microbial community composition accounted for more variations of Q10 values than a wide range of other factors, including soil pH, moisture, substrate quantity and quality, microbial biomass, diversity and enzyme activities. Specifically, co-occurring microbial assemblies (i.e., ecological clusters or modules) targeting labile carbon consumption were negatively correlated with Q10 of soil microbial respiration, whereas microbial assemblies associated with recalcitrant carbon decomposition were positively correlated with Q10 of soil microbial respiration. Furthermore, there were progressive shifts of microbial assemblies from labile to recalcitrant carbon consumption along the altitudinal gradient, supporting relatively high Q10 values in high-altitude regions. Our results provide new insights into the link between changes in major microbial assemblies with different trophic strategies and Q10 of soil microbial respiration along an altitudinal gradient, highlighting that warming could have stronger effects on microbially-mediated soil organic matter decomposition in high-altitude regions than previously thought., This research was supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (32071595 and 41830756). The Yangtze River Economic Belt is one of the areas with rapid economic development in China, although the intensive industrial activities have aggravated the emissions of soil pollutants in this area. Industrial activities are important sources of soil heavy metal contamination; however, the spatial distribution and main emission sources of soil heavy metal contamination in industrial regions of the economic belt remain unclear. Here, we collected data on the concentrations of eight heavy metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, Ni, Hg, As, and Zn) in the surface soils of 193 industrial regions covering 11 provinces and cities of the Yangtze River Economic Belt from China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Web of Science, and other public databases. On this basis, we analyzed the spatial distribution characteristics of heavy metals and the contamination characteristics of typical industries. The results showed that the heavy metal contamination in agricultural land was more serious than that in industrial land. A total of 58.49%, 39.53%, and 22.64% of the agricultural land, respectively, contained levels of Cd, Zn, and Pb that exceeded the screening values of the Soil Environmental Quality Control Standard for Soil Pollution Risk of Agricultural Land (GB 15618-2018). The results of geo-accumulation index analysis showed that the contamination degree of the eight heavy metals was in the order of Cd (2.52)Hg (1.17)Pb (1.00)Zn (0.90)Cu (0.72)As (0.02)Cr (-0.40)Ni(-0.48). As for the spatial distribution, Hg, Cd, As, Cu, Pb, and Zn were the main pollutants in the upstream and middle reaches of the industrial regions, whereas As, Cd, and Hg were the main pollutants in the downstream industrial regions. Different types of industry caused different types of contamination. Mining industries caused the most serious soil contamination, the main pollutants of which were Hg and Cd, followed by Cu, Pb, and Zn. Furthermore, metal processing industries mainly caused Cd and Pb contamination. The surrounding soils of chemical industries were contamination-free or only slightly polluted by the eight heavy metals, whereas petroleum processing industries mainly caused Cd contamination. Our study provides important theoretical basis for the future prevention and control of soil heavy metal contamination in industrial regions of the Yangtze River Economic Belt.

The Minamata Convention on Mercury calls for Hg control actions to protect the environment and human beings from the adverse impacts of Hg pollution. It aims at the entire life cycle of Hg. Existing studies on the Hg cycle in the global environmental-economic system have characterized the emission-to-impact pathway of Hg pollution. That is, Hg emissions/releases from the economic system can have adverse impacts on human health and ecosystems. However, current modeling of the Hg cycle is not fully looped. It ignores the feedback of Hg-related environmental impacts (including human health impacts and ecosystem impacts) to the economic system. This would impede the development of more comprehensive Hg control actions. By synthesizing recent information on Hg cycle modeling, this critical review found that Hg-related environmental impacts would have feedbacks to the economic system via the labor force and biodiversity loss. However, the interactions between Hg-related activities in the environmental and economic systems are not completely clear. The cascading effects of Hg-related environmental impacts to the economic system throughout global supply chains have not been revealed. Here, we emphasize the knowledge gaps and propose possible approaches for looping the Hg cycle in global environmental-economic system modeling. This progress is crucial for formulating more dynamic and flexible Hg control measures. It provides new perspectives for the implementation of the Minamata Convention on Mercury.

However, unlike for plants and animals, a global assessment of hotspots for soil nature conservation is still lacking2. This hampers our ability to establish nature conservation priorities for the multiple dimensions that support the soil system: from soil biodiversity to ecosystem services. Here, to identify global hotspots for soil nature conservation, we performed a global field survey that includes observations of biodiversity (archaea, bacteria, fungi, protists and invertebrates) and functions (critical for six ecosystem services) in 615 composite samples of topsoil from a standardized survey in all continents. We found that each of the different ecological dimensions of soils—that is, species richness (alpha diversity, measured as amplicon sequence variants), community dissimilarity and ecosystem services—peaked in contrasting regions of the planet, and were associated with different environmental factors. Temperate ecosystems showed the highest species richness, whereas community dissimilarity peaked in the tropics, and colder high-latitudinal ecosystems were identified as hotspots of ecosystem services. These findings highlight the complexities that are involved in simultaneously protecting multiple ecological dimensions of soil. We further show that most of these hotspots are not adequately covered by protected areas (more than 70%), and are vulnerable in the context of several scenarios of global change. Trait-based approaches provide a candidate framework for linking soil microbial community to ecosystem processes, yet how the trade-offs in different microbial traits regulate the community-level metabolic efficiency remains unknown. Herein we assessed the roles of the microbial taxa with particular trait strategies in mediating soil microbial metabolic efficiency along an altitude gradient on the Tibetan Plateau. Results showed that soil microbial metabolic efficiency declined with increasing altitude, as indicated by the increasing metabolic quotient (microbial respiration per unit biomass, qCO2) and decreasing carbon use efficiency (CUE). Both qCO2 and CUE were predominantly predicted by microbial physiological and taxonomic attributes after considering key environmental factors including soil pH, substrate quantity and quality. Specifically, the reduced metabolic efficiency was associated with higher investment into nutrient (particularly for phosphorus) acquisitions via enzymes. Furthermore, we identified key microbial assemblies selected by harsh environments (low substrate quality and temperature) as important predictors of metabolic efficiency. These results suggest that particular microbial assemblies adapted to nutrient limited and cold habitats, but at the expense of lower metabolic efficient at higher altitude. Our findings provide a candidate mechanism underlying community-level metabolic efficiency, which has important implications for microbial-mediated processes such as carbon dynamics under global climate changes.

This paper presents a 50 dB high-gain operational amplifier (OPAMP), which is fabricated by unipolar n-type indium–zinc–oxide thin-film transistors. Different positive feedback technologies are employed to achieve sufficient voltage gain. The fabricated OPAMP exhibits an open-loop voltage gain (A v) of 50 dB over a −3 dB bandwidth of 15 kHz at the supply voltage of 20 V. The measured unity-gain frequency (f UG) and the DC power consumption are 500 kHz and 8.07 mW, respectively. In addition, an effective frequency compensation scheme is also introduced and simulated. The simulation results that the proposed OPAMP has a voltage gain of 50 dB with 60° phase margin at 150 kHz unity-gain frequency after compensation.
