Background: This study summarizes the experience of operating a ‘Medical Humanities’ course, which was taught remotely to maintain activities and discussions at medical schools in Daegu, Korea during the sudden and unexpected coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).Methods: The subjects of this study were 73 first- and 79 second-grade medical students who took the medical humanities (1) and (2) courses among first- and second-grade students of Yeungnam University College of Medicine in 2020. Of the 152 students who agreed to the online survey, 123 completed the survey. Self-, environmental, and program evaluations were conducted on the study subjects, and differences according to grade and gender were analyzed.Results: As a result of the study, a significant difference between self-evaluation and environmental evaluation was confirmed. Self-evaluation was determined to be higher in the first grade than in the second grade. The environmental evaluation showed that male students were more satisfied than female students and students generally had difficulties in the classroom environment. Of the applications used in class, the highest satisfaction was observed with KakaoTalk (Kakao Corp.) and Zoom (Zoom Video Communications Inc.). At the end of COVID-19, the students preferred online classes.Conclusion: If the learning environment for online classes is well prepared and systematic provisions are made, such as class operations that are suitable for the subject, effective education and learning can be achieved by taking advantage of both face-to-face and online classes.

We investigated the work-life balance of clinical professors in charge of patient care, research, and education at medical schools and the demand for work-life balance support according to position (professor, associate professor, or assistant professor). In total, 163 clinical professors completed the consent form and participated in the study. They filled out an online survey consisting of questions about essential characteristics, a work-life balance test, stress, burnout, work-life satisfaction, and work-life balance support needs. We analyzed the results by analysis of variance and cross-tabulation using IBM SPSS ver. 23.0. Differences were found in work-life balance, stress, burnout, and satisfaction with life and work by position. The requirements for support for work-life balance also varied by professional status. Professors had a higher balance between life and work than associate professors or assistant professors. The specific requirements for work-life balance support were also slightly different for each position. Overall, there was a high demand for work process simplification and efficiency for work support, flexible working hours and sabbatical years for family and leisure, and career management consulting and training support for growth. Assistant professors and associate professors had a lower level of work-life balance than professors, as well as higher levels of stress and burnout. Professors' job satisfaction was also higher than that of the other groups. Based on the results of this study, we hope that a healthy work environment can be established through work-life balance support suitable for clinical professors’ positions.

The purpose of this study aims to analyze research trends related to 'evaluation' in Korean medical education through a systematic review. This study used a systematic review method, which is a research methodology for research trends and 'literature analysis.' Researchers searched the Korean journal literature published until the end of December 2020 in the Korean research database with keywords related to medicine and evaluation. Thus, 5,205 cases were identified. Based on these data, 143 papers were selected through a logical screening process, requiring 1 month to complete the data search and analysis process. In terms of publications, medical journals overwhelmingly outnumbered nonmedical journals until 2015; however, after 2016, the number of papers published in nonmedical journals increased, and the number of published papers was similar to that of medical journals. In terms of evaluation-related research, research on student and program evaluations has been very active compared to that on accreditation. As the number of evaluation studies has gradually decreased over the past 10 years, preparing a plan to revitalize them in Korean medical education is necessary. Considering that the role of evaluation in education has been emphasized in recent years, research on reestablishing the concept of evaluation; developing evaluation indicators; analyzing the status of student evaluation, program evaluation, and accreditation; and deriving measures to improve medical education through evaluation is required.

Background: In this study, the degree of anxiety, depression, and stress caused by coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was identified, as well as the need for psychological prevention measures among medical students in the Daegu region that was designated the first special disaster area due to the spread of COVID-19.Methods: The subjects of this study were 318 medical students in Daegu who voluntarily participated in an online test using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale and Impact of Event Scale-Revised Korean version. As a result of the test, risk students received immediate telephone counseling, and the effect of this telephone counseling was analyzed.Results: There were no differences in depression, anxiety, or stress according to gender and grade. As a result of immediate telephone counseling for risk students, significant differences were found in depression, anxiety, and stress, and the counseling was found to be effective.Conclusion: For medical students who are easily exposed to stress, the importance of psychological prevention measures and effectiveness of non-face-to-face counseling should be recognized. In the field of medical education, we must do our best to build a system that can be used immediately at the appropriate time for these programs.

This study attempted to investigate the possibility of using Muunsan extract as a new natural cosmetic ingredient by preparing a hair conditioner containing such an extract, applying it to permed hair, and analyzing its effects with the goal remedying subalhwangrak (yellowish and gray hair losing gloss and smoothness) as defined in oehyeongpyeon (external medicine) of the Donguibogam (Korean medical encyclopedia). According to measurements, ‘V’ was the greatest, followed by ‘C-2’, ‘C-1’, ‘B-2’, ‘A-2’, ‘B-1’, ‘A-1’, and ‘C’ in terms of hair thickness and tensile strength. In other words, ‘C-2 (hair post-treated with a hair conditioner containing Muunsan extract)’ was the best, following only virgin hair in terms of hair thickness and tensile strength. In terms of absorbance, ‘C’ was the highest, followed by ‘A-1’, ‘B-1’, ‘A-2’, ‘B-2’, ‘C-1’, ‘C-2’ and ‘V’. In other words, ‘C-2’ was the lowest, following only virgin hair in terms of the damage index. According to the analysis of cuticle with SEM(Scanning Electron Microscope), scales were most firmly adherent to the scalp and associated hair in ‘C-2’ as exfoliation and unevenness were low. When essential hair components were analyzed by EDS(Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectro mrtry), ‘V’ was the highest with 6.37%, followed by ‘C-2’, ‘C-1’, ‘B-2’, ‘B-1’, ‘A-2’, ‘A-1’ and ‘C’ n terms of sulfur (‘S’) content. The above results proved the hair protection effects of Muunsan extract and confirmed that it would be viable as a new ingredient for hair cosmetics.

Background A foodborne pathogen, Vibrio vulnificus, encounters normal microflora inhabiting the gut environments prior to causing fatal septicemia or gastroenteritis and should overcome the barriers derived from the gut commensals for successful infection. Its interactions with gut commensals during the infection process, however, have not yet been understood. In the present study, the effect of V. vulnificus on the community structures of gut microbiota in mice was examined. Results Analyses of microbiota in the fecal samples of mice that died due to V. vulnificus infection revealed the decreased abundance of bacteria belonged to Bacteroidetes, notably, the species Bacteroides vulgatus. In vitro coculturing of the two bacterial species resulted in the decreased survival of B. vulgatus. The antagonistic effect of V. vulnificus against B. vulgatus was found to be mediated by cyclo-Phe-Pro (cFP), one of the major compounds secreted by V. vulnificus. cFP-treated B. vulgatus showed collapsed cellular morphology with an undulated cell surface, enlarged periplasmic space, and lysed membranes, suggesting the occurrence of membrane disruption. The degree of membrane disruption caused by cFP was dependent upon the cellular levels of ObgE in B. vulgatus. Recombinant ObgE exhibited a high affinity to cFP at a 1:1 ratio. When mice were orally injected with cFP, their feces contained significantly reduced B. vulgatus levels, and their susceptibility to V. vulnificus infection was considerably increased. Conclusions This study demonstrates that V. vulnificus-derived cFP modulates the abundance of the predominant species among gut commensals, which made V. vulnificus increase its pathogenicity in the hosts.

Objective A disintegrin and metallopeptidase with thrombospondin motifs type 8 (ADAMTS8) is crucial for diverse physiological processes, such as inflammation, tissue morphogenesis, and tumorigenesis. The chicken ADAMTS8 (chADAMTS8) gene was differentially expressed in the kidney following exposure to different calcium concentrations, suggesting a pathological role of this protein in metabolic diseases. We aimed to examine the molecular characteristics of chADAMTS8 and analyze the gene-expression differences in response to toll-like receptor 3 (TLR3) stimulation. METHODS The ADAMTS8 mRNA and amino acid sequences of various species (chicken, duck, cow, mouse, rat, human, chimpanzee, pig, and horse) were retrieved from the Ensembl database and subjected to bioinformatics analyses. Reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and quantitative PCR (qPCR) experiments were performed with various chicken tissues and the chicken fibroblast DF-1 cell line, which was stimulated with polyinosinic-polycytidylic acid (poly[I:C]; a TLR3 ligand). RESULTS The chADAMTS8 gene was predicted to contain three thrombospondin type 1 (TSP1) domains, whose amino acid sequences shared homology among the different species, whereas sequences outside the TSP1 domains (especially the amino-terminal region) were very difffferent. An analytical method has been developed for the simultaneous determination of twenty aminoglycosides (AGs) in meat, milk, and egg using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. The target analytes were separated on a reverse-phase C18 column and eluted with acetonitrile containing the ion-pairing reagent (heptafluorobutyric acid). For sample preparation, we used ammonium acetate buffer solution and dispersive solid-phase cleanup (C18). Linearity was obtained >0.98 (r2). The trueness (average recoveries) was between 70 and 118%. The precision (coefficient of variation) was in the range of 1–27%. The proposed method provides reliable screening, quantification, and identification of twenty AGs residues in various food matrices. The method was applied to analyze real samples collected from local market, demonstrating that method is robust and useful for determining AGs residues.

The behavior of AgNPs in simulated gastric fluids (SGFs) with and without pepsin was studied through time-dependent UV–Vis absorption spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The dissolution at the initial stage and the subsequent particle growth and aggregation were observed in the absence of pepsin in SGF. On the other hand, individual AgNPs were protected via the formation of protein corona when pepsin was introduced into SGF. In addition, the agglomeration of AgNPs continued in SGF with pepsin, and gap narrowing between AgNPs was observed during the agglomeration. Flocculation eventually occurred as a result of continuous agglomeration. In addition, the degree of the agglomeration of AgNPs was found to be determined by the relative quantity of nanoparticles and pepsin. The experimental results indicate that the status of individual NPs and their congregative characteristics should be considered in the evaluation of the safety and toxicity of nanometer-scale materials.

This study aimed to measure phytoestrogen contents in health functional foods (HFFs) to alleviate menopausal symptoms that are commercially available in South Korea. A sensitive and selective method using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS) for the monitoring of 21 phytoestrogens was developed and fully validated. Phytoestrogens were extracted by liquid–liquid extraction using methyl tert-butylether as the solvent. Food samples were enzymatically hydrolyzed with β-glucuronidase/arylsulfatase. Before GC-MS, the analytes were derivatized to their trimethylsilyl derivatives by incubation with N,O-bis(trimethylsilyl)trifluoroacetamide with 1% trimethylchlorosilane for 30 min at 80°C. The calibration curves showed good linearity (r 2 > 0.99) in the range of interest for each analyte. The limits of detection and quantification of the 21 phytoestrogens were in the ranges of 0.5–20 and 1–50 ng/mL, respectively. The intra- and inter-day precisions were all below 15.7%. These multivariate procedures were efficient in determining the optimal conditions using peak heights as responses.

Pigs have been used as a good research model for xenotransplantation. Several groups have generated porcine-induced pluripotent stem cells (piPSCs) from differentiated somatic cells. Transgenic pigs with the alpha1,3-galactosyltransferase gene-knockout (GalT-KO) could successfully govern hyper acute rejection of organ transplants into primates. Thus, GalT-KO piPSCs could be a powerful cell resource for agricultural and biomedical applications. This study was performed to generate iPSCs from GalT-KO pigs and characterize their properties. We successfully generated a GalT-KO iPSC from a genetically modified pig using double alpha1,3-galactosyltransferase knockout alterations. Similar to mouse embryonic stem cells, the GalT-KO piPSCs were positive for classical pluripotency markers: POU5F1, NANOG, SOX2 and SSEA1, and were negative for: SSEA3, TRA-1-60 and TRA-1-81. The effect of Monascus-fermented Angelica gigas Nakai (AFAG) on the contents of serum lipids and tissue lipid peroxidation was investigated in alcohol feeding rats (Alc group). The serum contents of total lipid and free fatty acid in the alcohol feeding rats were significantly increased, but these increases tended to decrease in the AFAG group. The content of serum triglyceride was also significantly decreased in the AFAG group compared to the other groups. The serum content of total-cholesterol was not significantly different between the normal group and the AFAG group. The content of HDL-cholesterol in serum was slightly increased in the AFAG group compared to the Alc group. The content of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) in the liver, heart, spleen, and testis were significantly increased in the Alc group compared to the normal group, but these increases were significantly decreased in the AFAG group. The content of liver zinc was decreased in the Alc group and it was significantly increased in the AFAG group, which suggested that the lipid peroxidation contents are inversely correlated with the liver zinc content. The hepatic glutathione concentration was significantly decreased in the Alc group, but this content was significantly increased in the AFAG group, and it showed the antioxidant ability of glutathione. These activities were also compared to the standard silymarin drug treatment. Thus, the findings of the present study indicated the significant antioxidant and antihyperlipidemic activity of Monascus-fermented Angelica gigas Nakai against ethanol-induced toxicity.

This research was developing a mobile-based service system through which consumers can collect labeled information on processed foods. This research collected and analyzed the labeled information of processed foods sold on the market and found that they contain abstruse standards for the information of raw nutrients and additives and are not proper for our database. Thus, to offer proper consumer-oriented information, we reclassified the information according to categories such as raw materials, additives, and nutrient information based on the food information standard of the current Food Sanitation Act, and added it to the database. Using this reprocessed information, this study developed an algorithm and applied it to a mobile-based service system, which allows consumers to use information on the labels of processed foods scientifically and clearly.

Current study was to investigate the potential effects of silkworm, Bombyx mori L. fermented with Bacillus subtilis (BFSP) and Aspergillus kawachii (AFSP) at the 5% (w/w) levels in Sprague-Dawley rats, which was intoxicated with 1% (w/w) orotic acid (OA) for 10 days. The rat group administered silkworm powder showed improvements in fatty liver condition. Consumption of fermented silkworm powder reduced triglyceride concentrations in the liver tissues and serum and increased the serum lipid concentrations to normal levels, thereby aiding in improving fatty liver conditions. These effects were more pronounced in the BFSP than that in SP or AFSP in orotic acid-induced hepatotoxicity and oxidative stress. Based on these results, fermented silkworms are considered to be a material with significant potential for development into a functional health food that can improve fatty liver conditions.

Purpose: This study was conducted to examine the association among therapeutic relationship with mental health professionals, hope, and recovery, and to explore the mediation of therapeutic relationship with mental health professionals in the relation between hope and recovery in South Korean patients with a mental illness. Methods: A cross-sectional study design was employed. Eligible participants were 99 people with a mental illness who were enrolled as members at two Community Mental Health Centers in Gyeonggi Province. Data were collected from October, 4 to 14, 2011. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation coefficients, and multiple regression analysis. Results: Hope was positively correlated with recovery, and therapeutic relationship with mental health professionals was also positively associated with recovery. The mediating effect of therapeutic relationship with mental health professionals was found in the relation between hope and recovery. Conclusion: The results suggest that therapeutic relationship with mental health professionals plays an important role in promoting recovery of the patients with a mental illness. Therefore, mental health professionals should focus on developing a therapeutic relationship with their clients and also consider these recovery-related factors for persons who have a mental illness.

ObjectivesZZThe aim of this study was to investigate the effect of resilience on depression and life satisfaction in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) on Hemodialysis. MethodsZZFifty ESRD patients, aged 18 or older, on hemodialysis visiting the hemodialysis room at Catholic University of Korea, Uijeongbu St. Mary’s Hospital were included in this study. All patients were divided into two groups based on a Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview : ESRD patients with major depressive disorder (MDD), and ESRD patients without MDD. The 17item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAM-D) and the Montgomery-Asberg Depression Rating Scale were used for assessment of the severity of depression symptoms. The Conner-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC) and Index of Well-being were used for measurement of resilience and life satisfaction, respectively.
