A high-speed silicon modulator with broad optical bandwidth is proposed based on a symmetrically configured Mach—Zehnder interferometer. Careful phase bias control and traveling-wave design are used to improve the high-speed performance. Over a broadband wavelength range, high-speed operation up to 30 Gbit/s with a 4.5 dB–5.5 dB extinction ratio is experimentally demonstrated with a low driving voltage of 3 V. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A high efficiency grating coupler between single-mode fiber and silicon-on-insulator waveguide is designed by a formula method. Over 78.5% coupling efficiency (>-1.05 dB) with 3 dB bandwidth about 50nm for one grating coupler is obtained experimentally and this result is the highest one as far as we know. Ge-on-silicon-on-insulator p-i-n photodetectors were fabricated using an ultralow-temperature Ge buffer by ultrahigh-vacuum chemical vapor deposition. A four-channel integrated optical wavelength de-multiplexer is experimentally illustrated on a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) substrate. With the aid of cascaded micro-ring resonators, the whole performance of the wavelength de-multiplexer is improved, such as 3 dB bandwidth and channel crosstalk. Based on the transform matrix theory, a four-channel wavelength de-multiplexer with average channel spacing 4.5±0.5 nm (3 dB bandwidth ∼ 2 ± 0.5 nm) is demonstrated at telecommunication bands. For each channel, the extinction at the adjacent channel is below −39 dB and the out-of-band rejection ratio is up to 40 dB. We demonstrate a highly compact third-order elliptical micro-ring add-drop filter based on a silicon-on-insulator wafer. The elliptical micro-ring resonator has a major radius of 6 μm (minor radius of 4.112 μm) and a large free spectral range of 18 nm. Experimental results show a box-like channel dropping response, which has a 3 dB bandwidth of 2.7 nm, high out-of-band signal rejection of around 40 dB and a very low drop loss ( dB). We propose and experimentally demonstrate a broadband 1 × 3 adiabatic splitter based on the silicon-on-insulator technology, with simultaneous tapering of velocity and coupling. The designed structure becomes simulated transmission uniformity of three outputs better than 0.5 dB in a broadband of 250 nm, and a large simulated fabrication tolerance is obtained. A manufactured splitter whose parameters greatly diverge from the design acquires a measured result of the worst splitting ratio better than 1.5 dB as well as an excess loss lower than 0.8 dB in a large wavelength range of 80 nm. A compact structured illumination chip based on integrated optics is proposed and fabricated on a silicon-on-insulator platform. Based on the simulation of Gaussian beam interference, we adopt a chirped diffraction grating to achieve a specific interference pattern. The experimental results match well with the simulations. The portability and flexibility of the structured illumination chip can be increased greatly through horizontal encapsulation. High levels of integration, compared with the conventional structured illumination approach, make this chip very compact, with a footprint of only around 1 mm2. The chip has no optical lenses and can be easily combined with a microfluidic system.
