Abstract Background Optimal sagittal alignment of the femoral prosthesis is critical to the success of total knee arthroplasty (TKA). While robotic-assisted TKA can improve alignment accuracy, the efficacy of default femoral alignment versus individualized alignment remains under scrutiny. This study aimed to compare the differences in prosthetic alignment, anatomical restoration, and clinical outcomes between individualized femoral sagittal alignment and default sagittal alignment in robotic-assisted TKA. Methods In a prospective randomised controlled trial, 113 patients (120 knees) underwent robotic-assisted TKA were divided into two groups: 61 with individualized femoral flexion (individualized alignment group) and 59 with default 3–5° flexion (default alignment group). The individualized alignment was based on the distal femoral sagittal anteverted angle (DFSAA), defined as the angle between the mechanical and distal anatomical axes of the femur. The radiographic and clinical outcomes were compared. Results Despite similar postoperative femoral flexion angles between groups (P = 0.748), the individualized alignment group exhibited significantly lower incidences of femoral prosthesis extension and higher rates of optimal 0–3° prosthesis flexion (9.8% vs. 27.1%, P = 0.014,78.7% vs. 55.9%, p = 0.008, respectively). The individualized alignment group also demonstrated more favourable changes in sagittal anatomy, with higher maintenance of postoperative anterior femoral offset within 1 mm (54.1% vs. 33.9%, P = 0.026) and posterior condylar offset within 1 mm and 2 mm (44.3% vs. 25.4%, p = 0.031,73.8% vs. 50.8%, p = 0.010, respectively). Although slight improvement in the Hospital for Special Surgery Knee Score (HSS) at three months was observed (P = 0.045), it did not reach a minimal clinically important difference. Conclusion Individualized tailoring of femoral sagittal alignment in robotic-assisted total knee arthroplasty (TKA) enhances prosthetic alignment and anatomical restoration, suggesting potential improvements in postoperative outcomes.

BackgroundStroke stands as a prominent cause of mortality and disability worldwide, posing a major public health concern. Recent years have witnessed rapid advancements in artificial intelligence (AI). Studies have explored the utilization of AI in imaging analysis, assistive rehabilitation, treatment, clinical decision-making, and outcome and risk prediction concerning stroke. However, there is still a lack of systematic bibliometric analysis to discern the current research status, hotspots, and possible future development trends of AI applications in stroke.MethodsThe publications on the application of AI in stroke were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection, spanning 2004–2024. Only articles or reviews published in English were included in this study. Subsequently, a manual screening process was employed to eliminate literature not pertinent to the topic. Visualization diagrams for comprehensive and in-depth analysis of the included literature were generated using CiteSpace, VOSviewer, and Charticulator.ResultsThis bibliometric analysis included a total of 2,447 papers, and the annual publication volume shows a notable upward trajectory. The most prolific authors, countries, and institutions are Dukelow, Sean P., China, and the University of Calgary, respectively, making significant contributions to the advancement of this field. Notably, stable collaborative networks among authors and institutions have formed. Through clustering and citation burst analysis of keywords and references, the current research hotspots have been identified, including machine learning, deep learning, and AI applications in stroke rehabilitation and imaging for early diagnosis. Moreover, emerging research trends focus on machine learning as well as stroke outcomes and risk prediction.ConclusionThis study provides a comprehensive and in-depth analysis of the literature regarding AI in stroke, facilitating a rapid comprehension of the development status, cooperative networks, and research priorities within the field. Furthermore, our analysis may provide a certain reference and guidance for future research endeavors.

BackgroundVascular cognitive impairment (VCI) manifests in memory impairment, mental slowness, executive dysfunction, behavioral changes, and visuospatial abnormalities, significantly compromising the quality of daily life for patients and causing inconvenience to caregivers. Neuroimaging serves as a crucial approach to evaluating the extent, location, and type of vascular lesions in patients suspected of VCI. Nevertheless, there is still a lack of comprehensive bibliometric analysis to discern the research status and emerging trends concerning VCI neuroimaging.ObjectiveThis study endeavors to explore the collaboration relationships of authors, countries, and institutions, as well as the research hotspots and frontiers of VCI neuroimaging by conducting a bibliometric analysis.MethodsWe performed a comprehensive retrieval within the Core Collection of Web of Science, spanning from 2000 to 2023. After screening the included literature, CiteSpace and VOSviewer were utilized for a visualized analysis aimed at identifying the most prolific author, institution, and journal, as well as extracting valuable information from the analysis of references.ResultsA total of 1,024 publications were included in this study, comprising 919 articles and 105 reviews. Through the analysis of keywords and references, the research hotspots involve the relationship between neuroimaging of cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD) and VCI, the diagnosis of VCI, and neuroimaging methods pertinent to VCI. Moreover, potential future research directions encompass CSVD, functional and structural connectivity, neuroimaging biomarkers, and lacunar stroke.ConclusionThe research in VCI neuroimaging is constantly developing, and we hope to provide insights and references for future studies by delving into the research hotspots and frontiers within this field.

Hydrothermal activities occurred in the Yangtze block, South China, and affected the process of black shale sedimentation in the early Cambrian. Their specific influences, such as the sources, sedimentary environment, and mineralization, have not yet been revealed. Fortunately, the influences are explained through the geochemistry comparison of different wells FY1, XJ1, HY1, and XA1 in northwestern Hunan. The outcomes of the tectonic setting, distinguishable by element indicators, are disorganized. This is caused by the variable element composition, sedimentary recirculation of material source, and hydrothermal materials. FY1, the closest well to Zhangjiajie where Ni–Mo ores were formed by hydrothermal sedimentation, has more different features on the elemental geochemistry, but many indexes still indicate that it is normal sediments. XA1, which is far from the other wells and deposited in the deep-water basin, has significantly more differences in geochemical properties and shows more about normal marine deposition. XJ1 and HY1 are intermediate between them. Based on these wells, the hydrothermal contribution to the black shale sedimentation is not significant. However, some contents of trace and rare earth elements change widely because hydrothermal materials can diffuse and deposit over long distances. The concentration of Ag, As, Ba, Mo, Ba, U, and V generally has dozens of times higher than that of Upper Continental Crust. The early Cambrian environment was primarily anoxic/euxinic with enough sulfur, which is beneficial for enriching metal elements and organic matter. The sequence FY1, XJ1, HY1, and XA1 in turn has the same performance on the distance with Zhangjiajie, different intervals of suboxic environment and element enrichment, and hydrothermal-fluid-addition Ni abundance. Therefore, hydrothermal processes indeed provide materials for element enrichment and support the reducing environment, but the impact of hydrothermal activity decreases on the plane.

Abstract Background To address the research question of how simultaneous users of alcohol and cannabis differ from concurrent users in risk of cannabis use problems after the recreational marijuana legalization in Washington State. Methods We used generalized estimating equations with a Poisson distribution to analyze the association between simultaneous use of alcohol and marijuana (SAM) and cannabis-related problems compared to concurrent use. The data is a longitudinal sample of drinkers and cannabis users (n = 257, 47% female) aged 18 years and older from Washington State in 2014–2016. We adjusted for survey weights to account for differential probability of selection and response rates. The primary outcome is the past-six-month CUDIT problem subscale (ranging from 0 to 28), which is the total score for seven CUDIT problem items, after excluding the three items that covered marijuana use frequency. Covariates include marijuana use frequency (daily/near daily use, regular use, or infrequent use), marijuana daily quantity, alcohol daily volume, panel survey cycle, medical marijuana recommendation, driving time to nearest marijuana outlet, age of marijuana use onset, and other demographics. Osteoarthritis (OA) commonly results in compromised mobility and disability, thereby imposing a significant burden on healthcare systems. Cartilage injury is a prevalent pathological manifestation in OA and constitutes a central focus for the development of treatment strategies. Despite the considerable number of studies aimed at delaying this degenerative process, their outcomes remain unvalidated in preclinical settings. Recently, therapeutic strategies focused on angiogenesis have attracted the growing interest from researchers. Thus, we conducted a comprehensive literature review to elucidate the current progress in research and pinpoint research gaps in this domain. Additionally, it provides theoretical guidance for future research endeavors and the development of treatment strategies.

BackgroundUpper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC) and bladder urothelial carcinoma (BLCA) both originate from uroepithelial tissue, sharing remarkably similar clinical manifestations and therapeutic modalities. However, emerging evidence suggests that identical treatment regimens may lead to less favorable outcomes in UTUC compared to BLCA. Therefore, it is imperative to explore molecular processes of UTUC and identify biological differences between UTUC and BLCA.MethodsIn this study, we performed a comprehensive analysis using single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) on three UTUC cases and four normal ureteral tissues. These data were combined with publicly available datasets from previous BLCA studies and RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) data for both cancer types. This pooled analysis allowed us to delineate the transcriptional differences among distinct cell subsets within the microenvironment, thus identifying critical factors contributing to UTUC progression and phenotypic differences between UTUC and BLCA.ResultsscRNA-seq analysis revealed seemingly similar but transcriptionally distinct cellular identities within the UTUC and BLCA ecosystems. Notably, we observed striking differences in acquired immunological landscapes and varied cellular functional phenotypes between these two cancers. In addition, we uncovered the immunomodulatory functions of vein endothelial cells (ECs) in UTUC, and intercellular network analysis demonstrated that fibroblasts play important roles in the microenvironment. Further intersection analysis showed that MARCKS promote UTUC progression, and immunohistochemistry (IHC) staining revealed that the diverse expression patterns of MARCKS in UTUC, BLCA and normal ureter tissues.ConclusionThis study expands our multidimensional understanding of the similarities and distinctions between UTUC and BLCA. Our findings lay the foundation for further investigations to develop diagnostic and therapeutic targets for UTUC.

BackgroundOxidative stress and chronic inflammation play an important role in the pathogenesis process of cognitive frailty (CF). Background: Accumulating small unruptured intracranial aneurysms are detected due to the improved quality and higher frequency of cranial imaging, but treatment remains controversial. While surgery or endovascular treatment is effective for small aneurysms with a high risk of rupture, such interventions are unnecessary for aneurysms with a low risk of rupture. Consequently, it is imperative to accurately identify small aneurysms with a low risk of rupture. The purpose of this study was to develop a clinically practical model to predict small aneurysm ruptures based on a radiomics signature and clinical risk factors. Methods: A total of 293 patients having an aneurysm with a diameter of less than 5 mm, including 199 patients (67.9 %) with a ruptured aneurysm and 94 patients (32.1 %) without a ruptured aneurysm, were included in this study. Digital subtraction angiography or surgical treatment was required in all cases. Data on the clinical risk factors and the features on computed tomography angiography images associated with the aneurysm rupture status were collected simultaneously. We developed a clinical–radiomics model to predict aneurysm rupture status using multivariate logistic regression analysis. The combined clinical–radiomics model was constructed by nomogram analysis. The diagnostic performance, clinical utility, and model calibration were evaluated by operating characteristic curve analysis, decision curve analysis, and calibration analysis. Results: A combined clinical–radiomics model (Area Under Curve [AUC], 0.85; 95 % confidence interval [CI], 0.757–0.947) showed effective performance in the operating characteristic curve analysis. In the validation cohort, the performance of the combined model was better than that of the radiomics model (AUC, 0.75; 95 % CI, 0.645–0.865; Delong's test p-value = 0.01) and the clinical model (AUC, 0.74; 95 % CI, 0.625–0.851; Delong's test p-value

As an important target for deep to ultra-deep carbonate oil and gas exploration, Fractured-Vuggy dolomite reservoirs have strong heterogeneity. Accurate characterization of reservoir facies is crucial for their exploration and exploitation. Three methods, including the unsupervised intelligent clustering method of improved Fuzzy C-means clustering Algorithm Based on Density Sensitive Distance and Fuzzy Partrition (FCM-DSDFP), the fusion method of Principal Components Analysis (PCA) dimensionality reduction and noise reduction, and the principle of clustering feature analysis are applied to identify reservoir facies based on logging data. Based on the PCA method, the logging response characteristics of the reservoir facies are excavated, and the fusion characterization data of dimensionality reduction and noise reduction are extracted. The FCM-DSDFP unsupervised intelligent clustering method, a model that approximates the subsurface conditions is established, and the reliability of the model is tested according to the elbow rule and silhouette coefficient. Combining drilling core observation, Fractured-Vuggy type, partially cemented Fractured-Vuggy type, Pore-Vuggy type, Pore Type I, Pore Type II, Tight Type I, and Tight Type II are divided in the Dengying Formation 4th Member. Fractured-Vuggy type, partially cemented Fractured-Vuggy type, Pore-Vuggy Type I, Pore-Vuggy Type II, Pore Type I, Pore Type II, and Tight Type are divided in the Dengying Formation 2nd Member, respectively. Two methods were applied to verify the reservoir facies identification results based on intelligent algorithms. The first method is to compare the identification results with the reservoir facies types identified by core observations (Well PT103 and PS13). The second method is to verify the recognition results of intelligent algorithms by utilizing the relationship between reservoir facies types and bitumen. The test results show that the accuracy of the reservoir level identification is higher than 0.9, and the applicability is better than the commonly used algorithms such as FCM and K-means.

To explore the unique human-water interaction patterns in the Yellow River Delta since 1855, based on historical river channel data and historical village data, the patterns of villages in the Yellow River Delta and their responses to river channels were analysed. The number of new villages in the Yellow River Delta showed an ‘inverted V’-shaped curve after 1855, and the cumulative number of villages showed an ‘S’-shaped curve. The pattern change of villages was influenced by the change in the river system, which expanded to the northwest and southeast directions with the old Tiemenguan River Course as the axis. During this period, differences in riverbed morphology and fluvial areas, the natural evolution of soil in the river delta, and even the guidance of official policies were the key controls of the developing settlement pattern in the delta. Flooding often leads to the formation of new river channels and the abandonment and silting of old river channels. For the dried-up old courses and former flood basin, because the Yellow River sediment has the effect of improving soil structure and fertilizing land, the soil in these areas becomes suitable for farming and settlement. For the active new course, the freshwater from the river can replenish the groundwater and reduce the degree of soil salinization in the surrounding area, thus attracting people to settle. In general, although the Yellow River causes harm from a course change, it also benefits from silted land.

Abstract Over the past few decades, exciton-polaritons have attracted substantial research interest due to their half-light-half-matter bosonic nature. Coupling exciton-polaritons with magnetic orders grants access to rich many-body phenomena, but has been limited by the availability of material systems that exhibit simultaneous exciton resonances and magnetic ordering. Here we report magnetically-dressed microcavity exciton-polaritons in the van der Waals antiferromagnetic (AFM) semiconductor CrSBr coupled to a Tamm plasmon microcavity. Using angle-resolved spectroscopy, we reveal an exceptionally high exciton-photon coupling strength, up to 169 meV, demonstrating ultrastrong coupling that persists up to room temperature. By performing temperature-dependent spectroscopy, we show the magnetic nature of the exciton-polaritons in CrSBr microcavity as the magnetic order changes from AFM to paramagnetic. By applying an out-of-plane magnetic field, we achieve effective tuning of the polariton energy while maintaining the ultrastrong exciton-photon coupling strength. We attribute this to the spin canting process that modulates the interlayer exciton interaction.

Abstract Graphene has aroused great attention due to the intriguing properties associated with its low-energy Dirac Hamiltonian. When graphene is coupled with a correlated insulating substrate, electronic states that cannot be revealed in either individual layer may emerge in a synergistic manner. Here, we theoretically study the correlated and topological states in Coulomb-coupled and gate-tunable graphene-insulator heterostructures. By electrostatically aligning the electronic bands, charge carriers transferred between graphene and the insulator can yield a long-wavelength electronic crystal at the interface, exerting a superlattice Coulomb potential on graphene and generating topologically nontrivial subbands. This coupling can further boost electron-electron interaction effects in graphene, leading to a spontaneous bandgap formation at the Dirac point and interaction-enhanced Fermi velocity. Reciprocally, the electronic crystal at the interface is substantially stabilized with the help of cooperative interlayer Coulomb coupling. We propose a number of substrate candidates for graphene to experimentally demonstrate these effects.

Abstract A promising approach to the next generation of low-power, functional, and energy-efficient electronics relies on novel materials with coupled magnetic and electric degrees of freedom. In particular, stripy antiferromagnets often exhibit broken crystal and magnetic symmetries, which may bring about the magnetoelectric (ME) effect and enable the manipulation of intriguing properties and functionalities by electrical means. The demand for expanding the boundaries of data storage and processing technologies has led to the development of spintronics toward two-dimensional (2D) platforms. This work reports the ME effect in the 2D stripy antiferromagnetic insulator CrOCl down to a single layer. By measuring the tunneling resistance of CrOCl on the parameter space of temperature, magnetic field, and applied voltage, we verified the ME coupling down to the 2D limit and probed its mechanism. Utilizing the multi-stable states and ME coupling at magnetic phase transitions, we realize multi-state data storage in the tunneling devices. Our work not only advances the fundamental understanding of spin-charge coupling, but also demonstrates the great potential of 2D antiferromagnetic materials to deliver devices and circuits beyond the traditional binary operations.

Abstract Background The cognitive benefits of early non-pharmacological approaches have been demonstrated in older adults with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). However, older adults living in nursing homes have more severe cognitive impairment problems and lower initiative and compliance to participate in complex interventions. Hence, it important to investigate more attractive and sustainable methods to prevent or delay cognitive decline. The present study adopts the self-determination theory (SDT) as a theoretical framework to innovatively develop an integrated art-based intervention for older adults with MCI in nursing homes in China and aims to evaluate its effects on cognitive function, mental health, and other health-related outcomes. Methods The study is a nursing home-based, cluster randomised controlled trial (RCT) that targets older adults (aged ≥ 60 years) with MCI in Fuzhou City, China. All nursing homes in the area covered by Fuzhou City are invited to participate. Eligible nursing homes are randomised to one of two groups: intervention group (receive a 14-week, 27-session intervention) and waitlist control group (receive the usual care). The SDT-based integrated creative art (SDTICA) program reasonably adopts the SDT as a theoretical framework to innovatively develop an integrated art-based intervention for older adults with MCI in nursing homes. The primary (global cognitive function and psychological indicator) and secondary (daily activity function, social function, and specific domains of cognitive function) outcomes will be measured at baseline, after the intervention, and during follow-up. Discussion This study aims to evaluate the effects of SDTICA program on neuropsychological outcomes in older adults with MCI and provide scientific evidence for art-based non-pharmacologic interventions in nursing homes, which may reduce dementia risk in older adults with MCI. Trial registration The trial was prospectively registered at the Chinese Clinical Trials Registry with the registration number ChiCTR2200061681 on 30 June 2022.

Abstract The realization of graphene gapped states with large on/off ratios over wide doping ranges remains challenging. Here, we investigate heterostructures based on Bernal-stacked bilayer graphene (BLG) atop few-layered CrOCl, exhibiting an over-1-GΩ-resistance insulating state in a widely accessible gate voltage range. The insulating state could be switched into a metallic state with an on/off ratio up to 107 by applying an in-plane electric field, heating, or gating. We tentatively associate the observed behavior to the formation of a surface state in CrOCl under vertical electric fields, promoting electron–electron (e–e) interactions in BLG via long-range Coulomb coupling. Consequently, at the charge neutrality point, a crossover from single particle insulating behavior to an unconventional correlated insulator is enabled, below an onset temperature. We demonstrate the application of the insulating state for the realization of a logic inverter operating at low temperatures. Our findings pave the way for future engineering of quantum electronic states based on interfacial charge coupling.

Abstract 2D MoTe2 is regarded as a favorable candidate for semiconductor nanoelectronics integration. Chemical‐vapor‐deposition‐grown MoTe2 usually presents p‐type characteristics. In order to realize basic electronic units like complementary metal‐oxide‐semiconductor (CMOS) inverter, controllable fabrication of p‐ and n‐type transistors at large scale is of vital importance. Here, large‐scale MoTe2 n‐channel field‐effect transistor (n‐FET) arrays are successfully fabricated with seamless coplanar metallic 1T′‐WTe2 contacts to reduce contact resistance. High‐k HfO2 serves as a gate dielectric and its atomic‐layer‐deposition (ALD) process causes an n‐doping effect on the 2H‐MoTe2 channel. The FETs perform typical n‐type characteristics with average electron density and on/off ratio of ≈1.7 × 1013 cm−2 and 2.1 × 104, respectively. Furthermore, large‐scale homogeneous CMOS inverter arrays are fabricated, showing clear logic swing with low power consumption (≈0.4 nW) and high device yield (≈92%). Notably, their voltage transfer characteristics exhibit small hysteresis, and they work well after being kept in air for 16 months, indicating high device stability. The statistical results show that both the n‐FETs and CMOS inverters have high uniformity and reliability in performance. Significantly, this fabrication method is free from transfer processes and compatible with traditional silicon technology. This work paves the way for the application of few‐layer MoTe2 in semiconductor nanoelectronics integration.

2D nonlayered materials exhibit interesting properties for catalysis, nanoelectronics and spintronics applications, but their growth is still challenging. Here, the authors report a theoretical model and an experimental strategy to synthesize various 2D nonlayered transition metal oxides with room-temperature magnetic properties.

Abstract Background and purpose Chinese mind–body exercise-Baduanjin has received increasing attention for health promotion among middle-aged and older adults in China, but there is a lack of high-quality evidence on its effectiveness. This systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted to investigate the effects of Baduanjin on physical function in middle-aged and older adults. Methods Seven electronic databases were searched for articles published before 22 June 2021 with the keywords Baduanjin exercise combined with physical-function-related outcomes. Risk of bias was assessed in the included studies, and data were analyzed using Review Manager software V5.3. Results Fifteen articles, including 14 randomized controlled trials, were included in this study. The results of the meta-analysis showed that Baduanjin significantly improved muscle strength (grip strength: SMD = 0.63, 95% CI 0.22 to 1.04, p = 0.003), balance ability (timed up-and-go test score: MD = -2.21, 95% CI -3.91 to -0.51, p = 0.01; one-leg stand test score: MD = 3.75, 95% CI 1.96 to 5.55, p

Diagenesis is one of the important genesis of carbonate reservoirs, and it is also an important geological factor for the evaluation and prediction of carbonate reservoirs. First, the research methods of carbonate diagenesis were summarized, and the diagenesis mechanism and latest understandings of dissolution, dolomitization, cementation, neomorphism, silicification, compaction and pressolution were analyzed, and the auxiliary diagenesis factors such as bioturbation, tectonic disruption, hydrocarbon charging and micro-organisms were summarized. The evolution of the diagenetic environment under the control of tectonic-sequence were analyzed, and five sedimentary-diagenetic combinations were classified according to the sedimentary energy and diagenetic properties. Several issues needed to be improved in diagenetic research of carbonate reservoirs, which include: the diagenesis simulation system was different from the real stratigraphic environment; Diagenesis terminology was not standardized, and diagenesis mode was idealized and simplified; Lagoon, deep water and cold water and other unconventional carbonate diagenesis were in a low research degree; The double-edged influence of diagenesis on reservoirs and the quantitative research on reservoir reforms are insufficient. The development trend of carbonate diagenesis research include: by combining the history of stratum burial, the experimental simulation method will gradually move towards the real burial environment, and the diagenesis simulation software will continue to achieve modular integration and intelligence; The diagenesis model will be more refined and targeted, and the diagenesis can achieve quantitative research on the transformation of the reservoir; Research on the diagenesis mechanism of unconventional carbonate rocks will be more complete.

Highlights Oxygen-respirable sponge was constructed by carbon dots-assisted synthesis strategy. The hydrophilicity and aerophilicity of Co@C–O–Cs active sites boost oxygen diffusion and the bifunctional oxygen reduction reaction and oxygen evolution reaction activities. Co@C–O–Cs-based Zn-air battery (ZAB) displays excellent specific capacity and stability, and the all-solid-state Co@C–O–Cs-based ZAB exhibits excellent flexibility.

Background/Objectives: Regular Baduanjin exercise training has been shown to be beneficial to the physical and cognitive health of older adults, but the underlying mechanisms remain to be investigated. This study examined the influence of Baduanjin on cerebral hemodynamics in community-dwelling older adults with cognitive frailty. Design: Randomized controlled trial. Methods: A total of 102 eligible participants were randomly allocated into the Baduanjin exercise intervention group (BEG) or usual physical activity control group (CG) for 24 weeks. Cerebral hemodynamic parameters of bilateral middle/anterior cerebral artery and basilar artery, cognitive ability and physical frailty were assessed using Transcranial Doppler (TCD), Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) and Edmonton Frailty Scale (EFS) at baseline and 24 weeks post-intervention. Results: After 24 weeks intervention, the changes in peak systolic velocity (PSV), mean blood flow velocity (MBFV), and end diastolic velocity (EDV) in the right middle cerebral artery and basilar artery were better in the BEG than in the CG; the increase in MoCA scores and the decrease in EFS scores were significantly higher in the BEG than in the CG. Moreover, the interaction of exercise and time on those variables showed obvious significance. Conclusions: The 24 weeks Baduanjin exercise training had a positive beneficial effect on cerebral blood flow in community-dwelling older adults with cognitive frailty. This may be a potential mechanism by which Baduanjin exercise improves the cognitive frailty in older adults. Trial registration: Chinese Clinical Trial Registry, ChiCTR1800020341. MnBi2Te4 and Bi2Te3 can form natural superlattices, where the MnBi2Te4 layers are separated by multiples of Bi2Te3. The combination of these two materials offers a potential platform for the interplay of tunable magnetism and topology. Here, the authors show that MnBi4Te7 and MnBi6Te10 display a complex magnetic ground state with coexisting ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic domains.

Abstract Background The ongoing opioid epidemic and increases in alcohol-related mortality are key public health concerns in the USA, with well-documented inequalities in the degree to which groups with low and high education are affected. This study aimed to quantify disparities over time between educational and racial and ethnic groups in sex-specific mortality rates for opioid, alcohol, and combined alcohol and opioid poisonings in the USA. Methods The 2000–2019 Multiple Cause of Death Files from the National Vital Statistics System (NVSS) were used alongside population counts from the Current Population Survey 2000–2019. Alcohol, opioid, and combined alcohol and opioid poisonings were assigned using ICD-10 codes. Sex-stratified generalized least square regression models quantified differences between educational and racial and ethnic groups and changes in educational inequalities over time. Results Between 2000 and 2019, there was a 6.4-fold increase in opioid poisoning deaths, a 4.6-fold increase in combined alcohol and opioid poisoning deaths, and a 2.1-fold increase in alcohol poisoning deaths. Educational inequalities were observed for all poisoning outcomes, increasing over time for opioid-only and combined alcohol and opioid mortality. For non-Hispanic White Americans, the largest educational inequalities were observed for opioid poisonings and rates were 7.5 (men) and 7.2 (women) times higher in low compared to high education groups. Combined alcohol and opioid poisonings had larger educational inequalities for non-Hispanic Black men and women (relative to non-Hispanic White), with rates 8.9 (men) and 10.9 (women) times higher in low compared to high education groups. Conclusions For all types of poisoning, our analysis indicates wide and increasing gaps between those with low and high education with the largest inequalities observed for opioid-involved poisonings for non-Hispanic Black and White men and women. This study highlights population sub-groups such as individuals with low education who may be at the highest risk of increasing mortality from combined alcohol and opioid poisonings. Thereby the findings are crucial for the development of targeted public health interventions to reduce poisoning mortality and the socioeconomic inequalities related to it.

In recent years, 200/400 Gbit/s transceiver in the form of Quad Small Form Factor Pluggable-Double Density (QSFP-DD) is favored by the market due to their relatively low power consumption and small size for high-density deployment. However, the deterioration of heat dissipation caused by high speed and small size limits the application of QSFP-DD optical modules. In this paper, the finite element method is used to conduct thermal modeling and simulation of QSFP-DD module, and the internal temperature field of 200 Gbit/s QSFP-DD Long Range 4(LR4) optical module in high temperature environment is studied. The effect of thermal pad on improving the internal heat dissipation of the module is verified. The performance of the module in high temperature environment is measured. It provides a reference for the design and application of QSFP-DD transceiver module.

Abstract Background The state of Washington legalized cannabis for adult use in 2012 and retail stores began to open in 2014. While details of the legal market have been tracked by the state, the total market for cannabis and characteristics of purchasers can only be identified through surveys. Methods Six cross-sectional samples of the Privatization of Spirits in Washington (PSW) surveys were collected between January 2014 and October 2016 with two in each year. Random digit dial procedures were used to recruit a sample aged 18 and older, with 40% of cases from mobile phones. A total of 5492 respondents participated. Analyses of the population-weighted sample utilized purchasing amounts and frequencies, use frequency and related measures to estimate total and mean amounts and expenditures. Sensitivity analyses were conducted for key assumptions. Results The market for cannabis flower is estimated to have increased from 158 metric tons and $1.23 billion in 2014 to 222 metric tons and $1.7 billion in 2016, with little change from 2014 to 2015. Purchases from legal sources, retail and dispensaries, were estimated at 69% of the total market. Daily or near daily (DND) users accounted for about 83% of sales in 2014, rising to 91% in 2016. The prevalence of past year use rose substantially from 25% in 2014 to 32% in 2016, with DND use rising from 10.2 to 11.3%. Average purchase amounts for DND users rose from 291 g in 2014 to 374 g in 2016, while mean amounts among non-DND users declined from 78 to 28.6 g. Conclusions The expansion of retail cannabis stores in Washington appears to have led to increased market size in 2016 with all of the increase attributed to DND users. Frequent users may be important to consider in legalization evaluations.

Sixteen Reduced Triaxial Compression (RTC) triaxial tests were conducted to investigate the reinforcement effect of fibered clay in this paper. Palm fiber with four different fiber lengths (5 mm, 10 mm, 15 mm, and 20 mm) and four different fiber contents (0.3%, 0.5%, 0.7%, and 0.9% in mass) were utilized. Accordingly, three additional groups of triaxial tests were performed to analyze the stress path effects with four different stress paths, including RTC, Conventional Triaxial Compression (CTC), Reduced Triaxial Extension (RTE), and isotropic Triaxial Compression (TC). Three samples were tested, including fibered clay with a fiber length of 10 mm and a fiber content of 0.7% (referred to as 10 mm 0.7%), fibered clay with a fiber length of 20 mm and a fiber content of 0.5% (referred to as 20 mm 0.5%), and bare clay, which was used to reveal the fiber reinforcement of clay. All samples were tested under consolidated undrained conditions. The test results showed that in RTC conditions, the deviator stress increased to a greater extent with 0.3% mass content of fibers according to the same higher confining pressures of bare clay. Fibers primarily increased the cohesion of fibered clay, a shear strength parameter, in terms of total stress, whereas they also increased the friction angle of fibered clay in terms of effective stress. For short fibers, the coefficient of strength reinforcement of the fibered clay increased with fiber content. However, for long fibers, this reinforcement may lead to a weakening of the clay’s strength, as the long fibers may cluster or weaken along their longitude. Among the four stress paths (CTC, TC, RTC, and RTE) examined, the reinforcement took effort mainly in the CTC condition. In contrast, in unloading conditions, the fibers had little contribution to reinforcement. Consequently, in unloading conditions, such as deep excavating and slope cutting, the stress path should be considered to obtain a reliable parameter for geotechnical engineering applications.

Highlights The chemical process of local oxidation–partial reduction–deep coupling for stibnite reduction of carbon dots (CDs) is revealed by in-situ high-temperature X-ray diffraction. Sb2S3@xCDs anode delivers high initial coulombic efficiency in lithium ion batteries (85.2%) and sodium ion batteries (82.9%), respectively. C–S bond influenced by oxygen-rich carbon matrix can restrain the conversion of sulfur to sulfite, well confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy characterization of solid electrolyte interphase layers helped with density functional theory calculations. CDs-induced Sb–O–C bond is proved to effectively regulate the interfacial electronic structure. Abstract The application of Sb2S3 with marvelous theoretical capacity for alkali metal-ion batteries is seriously limited by its poor electrical conductivity and low initial coulombic efficiency (ICE). In this work, natural stibnite modified by carbon dots (Sb2S3@xCDs) is elaborately designed with high ICE. Greatly, chemical processes of local oxidation–partial reduction–deep coupling for stibnite reduction of CDs are clearly demonstrated, confirmed with in situ high-temperature X-ray diffraction. More impressively, the ICE for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) is enhanced to 85%, through the effect of oxygen-rich carbon matrix on C–S bonds which inhibit the conversion of sulfur to sulfite, well supported by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy characterization of solid electrolyte interphase layers helped with density functional theory calculations. Not than less, it is found that Sb–O–C bonds existed in the interface effectively promote the electronic conductivity and expedite ion transmission by reducing the bandgap and restraining the slip of the dislocation. As a result, the optimal sample delivers a tremendous reversible capacity of 660 mAh g−1 in LIBs at a high current rate of 5 A g−1. This work provides a new methodology for enhancing the electrochemical energy storage performance of metal sulfides, especially for improving the ICE.

Abstract Background Extracellular vesicles (EVs) play a key role in constructing a microenvironment that favors the differentiation of stem cells. The present work aimed to determine the molecular mechanisms by which EV derived from inflammatory dental pulp stem cell (iDPSC-EV) influence periodontal ligament stem cells (PDLSCs) and provide a potential strategy for bone and dental pulp regeneration. Methods The osteogenic and odontogenic differentiation was assessed by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR), western blot, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity assay, ALP staining, alizarin red S (ARS) staining, and immunofluorescence staining. To detect proliferation, the Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8) assay, and flow cytometry analysis were used. EVs were isolated by the Exoperfect kit and ultrafiltration and characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), nanoparticle tracking analysis (NTA), and western blot. The expression profile of miRNAs in EVs was studied using miRNA sequence and bioinformatics, and one of the upregulated miRNAs was evaluated on PDLSCs. Results The inflammatory microenvironment stimulated osteogenic and odontogenic differentiation of DPSCs and iDPSC-EV behaved alike on PDLSCs. MiR-758-5p was upregulated in iDPSC-EV and was demonstrated to play a significant role in the osteogenic and odontogenic commitment of PDLSCs. A dual-luciferase reporter assay confirmed the binding site between miR-758-5p and limb development membrane protein 1 (LMBR1). The knockdown of LMBR1 also enhanced the above potential. Mechanically, bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) signaling was activated. Conclusions EVs from the inflammatory microenvironment enhanced the osteogenic and odontogenic differentiation of PDLSCs partly by shuttering LMBR1-targeting miR-758-5p via BMP signaling.

Bone defects that result from trauma, infection, surgery, or congenital malformation can severely affect the quality of life. To address this clinical problem, a phosphoserine-loaded chitosan membrane that consists of chitosan membranes serving as the scaffold support to accommodate endogenous stem cells and phosphoserine is synthesized. The introduction of phosphoserine greatly improves the osteogenic effect of the chitosan membranes via mutual crosslinking using a crosslinker (EDC, 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethyl aminopropyl)-carbodiimide). The morphology of PS-CS membranes was shown by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to have an interconnected porous structure. The incorporation of phosphoserine into chitosan membranes was confirmed by energy dispersive spectrum (EDS), Fourier Transforms Infrared (FTIR), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectrum. The CCK8 assay and Live/Dead staining, Hemolysis analysis, and cell adhesion assay demonstrated that PS-CS membranes had good biocompatibility. The osteogenesis-related gene expression of BMSCs was higher in PS-CS membranes than in CS membranes, which was verified by alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity, immunofluorescence staining, and real-time quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR). Furthermore, micro-CT and histological analysis of rat cranial bone defect demonstrated that PS-CS membranes dramatically stimulated bone regeneration in vivo. Moreover, H&E staining of the main organs (heart, liver, spleen, lung, or kidney) showed no obvious histological abnormalities, revealing that PS-CS membranes were no additional systemic toxicity in vivo. Collectively, PS-CS membranes may be a promising candidate for bone tissue engineering.

Aiming at the problem that the change of motor parameters in actual operation will significantly reduce the control accuracy of the motor, this paper proposes a sensorless control method of permanent magnet synchronous motor based on an adaptive back-EMF observer. Firstly, in the sensorless vector control algorithm, the mathematical model of the permanent magnet synchronous motor based on the coordinate axis transformation is established, online identification of permanent magnet synchronous motor flux linkage, and the adaptive back EMF observer is constructed. The parameters update the motor model to achieve accurate control of the rotor position and speed of the permanent magnet synchronous motor. Then the back-EMF observer and the adaptive back-EMF observer are verified in the simulation environment. Then the simulation model of the back-EMF observer and the adaptive back-EMF observer is carried out, and the comparison analysis is made. Finally, a permanent magnet synchronous motor control platform is built in the laboratory, and the method proposed in this paper is verified. The results show that, under the condition that the permanent magnet synchronous motor parameters change, the online identification of the parameters and the accurate speed of the permanent magnet synchronous motor can be realized control.

PurposeThe purpose of this study is to investigate the retinal vascular morphological characteristics in high myopia patients of different severity.Methods317 eyes of high myopia patients and 104 eyes of healthy control subjects were included in this study. The severity of high myopia patients is classified into C0–C4 according to the Meta Analysis of the Pathologic Myopia (META-PM) classification and their vascular morphological characteristics in ultra-wide field imaging were analyzed using transfer learning methods and RU-net. Correlation with axial length (AL), best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and age was analyzed. In addition, the vascular morphological characteristics of myopic choroidal neovascularization (mCNV) patients and their matched high myopia patients were compared.ResultsThe RU-net and transfer learning system of blood vessel segmentation had an accuracy of 98.24%, a sensitivity of 71.42%, a specificity of 99.37%, a precision of 73.68% and a F1 score of 72.29. Compared with healthy control group, high myopia group had smaller vessel angle (31.12 ± 2.27 vs. 32.33 ± 2.14), smaller fractal dimension (Df) (1.383 ± 0.060 vs. 1.424 ± 0.038), smaller vessel density (2.57 ± 0.96 vs. 3.92 ± 0.93) and fewer vascular branches (201.87 ± 75.92 vs. 271.31 ± 67.37), all P < 0.001. With the increase of myopia maculopathy severity, vessel angle, Df, vessel density and vascular branches significantly decreased (all P < 0.001). There were significant correlations of these characteristics with AL, BCVA and age. Patients with mCNV tended to have larger vessel density (P < 0.001) and more vascular branches (P = 0.045).ConclusionThe RU-net and transfer learning technology used in this study has an accuracy of 98.24%, thus has good performance in quantitative analysis of vascular morphological characteristics in Ultra-wide field images. Along with the increase of myopic maculopathy severity and the elongation of eyeball, vessel angle, Df, vessel density and vascular branches decreased. Myopic CNV patients have larger vessel density and more vascular branches.

The Miocene Zhujiang Formation is the key horizon for oil and gas exploration in the Pearl River Mouth basin of northern South China Sea. With the help of core observation, seismic attributes and various analytical data, the sedimentary facies marks, distribution of sedimentary facies and depositional model of forced regression in the Miocene Zhujiang Formation of the Pearl River Mouth basin, northern South China Sea, have been studied. Forced regressive deposits were formed during the period when relative sea level ranged from highstand to lowstand and the sediments were forced to undergo progradation so that five sets of foreset delta deposits are developed in turn. In the early stage of forced regression, the normal delta where the delta plain, delta front and prodelta are not absent mainly developed. In the later stage of forced regression, the shelf edge delta with only the delta front and the prodelta, the longshore bar along the shelf break and the turbidite fan in the deep water of the slope area were developed. The favorable reservoir of forced regressive deposits are located near the upper boundary of the falling stage systems tract and the basal surface of forced regression, and they are the sand bodies of shelf edge delta, longshore bar and turbidite fan. The research results may provide guidance for reservoir prediction.

Investigation of groundwater variable-density flow and solute transport is usually limited in a 2D system. There are only a few studies performed in a 3D system. However, there are still studies showing differences in free convection between the 2D and 3D systems. This study systematically investigates the variable-density solute transport processes in the 2D and 3D systems through numerical simulations of SEAWAT-2000 and quantifies the system instability, solute spreading and dilution using the Sherwood number, spatial moments and dilution index. The results show that the separate fingers form in the 2D system while they are suppressed in the 3D system due to the enhanced diffusion. However, the instability is stronger and the convective infiltration is faster in the 3D system, which is not directly related to the fingering phenomenon. Furthermore, dilution is stronger in the 3D system, and it reaches to the maximum values at a faster rate in the 2D system. The traditional second central moment may lead to the wrong estimation of spreading and solute dilution in free convection and unstable solute transport. These outcomes help predict properly free convection and solute transport in three-dimensional natural aquifers.

Aiming at the problems of difficult construction and occlusion of the initial structure of an automotive augmented reality head-up display (AR-HUD), a method to quickly build the initial structure of an automotive AR-HUD is proposed. Firstly, the position of the mirrors in the initial structure is calculated based on the Rodrigues rotation formula. Secondly, the position of the mirrors is restricted by constraints during optimization to prevent the problem of structural occlusion. Finally, a virtual image display system with a visual distance of 7.5 m and a field of view angle of 10° × 5° is designed. The image quality analysis of the optimized system shows that the light spots in each field of view are all within Airy spots. At the spatial cutoff frequency of the virtual image plane of the optical system, the modulation transfer function (MTF) value of the full field of view is basically greater than 0.5, and the distortion is less than 1%. Finally, using the image for simulation, the results of the simulation image are satisfying, which proves the validity and feasibility of the structural design. It provides a useful reference for the structural design of the remote head-up display system.

Blueberry (Vaccinium spp.) rhizosphere microorganisms can significantly increase the absorption area and improve the efficiency of rhizospheric nutrient uptake. However, there has been little research on blueberry rhizosphere microorganisms, especially those that can complement root function deficiency. In this study, we analyzed the rhizosphere fungi of ‘O’Neal,’ ‘Sharpblue,’ and ‘Premier’ blueberry cultivars and found that ‘Premier’ blueberries showed strong growth potential and relatively high root regulation ability. The dominant symbiotic fungus Sistotrema was correlated with the strong growth of ‘Premier’ and was directionally screened and isolated based on conserved gene structures and COG function analysis. This fungus was reinoculated onto the roots of ‘Gulfcoast’ and ‘Star’ blueberry cultivars. Sistotrema promoted the growth of blueberries and improved their ability to resist stress and grow under adverse conditions, as indicated by maintained or increased chlorophyll content under such conditions. Further analyses showed that Sistotrema has certain functional characteristics such as the ability to dissolve iron in its insoluble form and then release it, to fix nitrogen, and to inhibit nitrification in soil. Thus, it effectively doubled the soil nitrogen content and increased the soluble iron content in soil by 50%. This investigation indicates sistotrema inoculation as an approach to increase blueberry stress tolerance and complete their root nutrition deficiency.

This paper presents a dynamic analysis of a long-span double-deck suspension bridge subjected to random traffic loading using a Finite Element (FE) model. During this study, the influence of various traffic parameters, such as vehicle speed, traffic volume, traffic weight, and the location of the passing girder, on the longitudinal movement of the girders was investigated. The results reveal that schemes with double girders passing can lead to greater longitudinal displacement of the girder as compared to a long-span bridge with a single passing girder. However, the incorporation of fluid-viscous dampers at the ends of the girders significantly reduces the displacement range of each node. For instance, at the left end of the bridge, the original model (without dampers) exhibits a displacement range of approximately 0.01–0.056 m, whereas the constrained model (with dampers) shows a range of 0.025–0.033 m. A quantitative analysis demonstrates that higher damping coefficients (or smaller damping exponents) can further mitigate the girder’s movement.

Abstract Background In this study, we aimed to perform a comprehensive analysis on the metagenomic next-generation sequencing for the etiological diagnosis of septic patients, and further to establish optimal read values for detecting common pathogens. Methods In this single-center retrospective study, septic patients who underwent pathogen detection by both microbial culture and metagenomic next-generation sequencing in the intensive care unit of the Second People’s Hospital of Shenzhen from June 24, 2015, to October 20, 2019, were included. Results A total of 193 patients with 305 detected specimens were included in the final analysis. The results of metagenomic next-generation sequencing showed significantly higher positive rates in samples from disparate loci, including blood, bronchoalveolar lavage fluid, and cerebrospinal fluid, as well as in the determination of various pathogens. The optimal diagnostic reads were 2893, 1825.5, and 892.5 for Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Klebsiella pneumoniae, respectively. Conclusions The metagenomic next-generation sequencing is capable of identifying multiple pathogens in specimens from septic patients, and shows significantly higher positive rates than culture-based diagnostics. The optimal diagnostic reads for frequently detected microbes might be useful for the clinical application of metagenomic next-generation sequencing in terms of timely and accurately determining etiological pathogens for suspected and confirmed cases of sepsis due to well-performed data interpretation.

The transformation mechanism of muddy carbonate rock by the coupling of bioturbation and diagenesis was studied based on core, cast thin section and physical property data of Cretaceous strata in the Mesopotamia Basin, the Middle East. There are 3 ways of biological transformation of rocks: (1) The living creatures transformed formations mechanically to make the rocks looser and intergranular pores increase. (2) After formation, burrows were backfilled with coarse-grained debris, and then unsaturated fluid infiltrated into the burrows during the penecontemporaneous period, resulting in dissolution. (3) Chemical alteration occurred in abandoned burrows and dolomitization produced a large number of intercrystalline pores. The coupling of bioturbation and dissolution occurred mainly in the penecontemporaneous phase, and was controlled by rock type, sea level decline, burrow abundance, infillings, and water environment etc. As the burrows had better physical properties than the matrix, unsaturated fluid preferentially migrated along the burrows, leading to dissolution and expansion of the burrows first and then dissolution of the matrix. The coupling of bioturbation and dolomitization occurred mainly in the burial phase. The rich organic matter and reducing bacteria in the burrow provided material basis, reducing conditions and alkaline environment for dolomitization. The metasomatism in the penecontemporaneous period had little effect on the physical properties of the burrows. When the burrows were separated from the deposition interface, equimolar metasomatism occurred in the burrows in a closed environment, forming euhedral fine-crystalline dolomite with intercrystalline pores. The transformation degree of bioturbation to muddy carbonate reservoir depends on rock type, density, connectivity, infillings and structure of the burrows. With the increase of the carbonate mud content, the improvement to rock physical properties by bioturbation becomes more prominent. When the burrows are filled with coarse-grained debris or fine-crystalline dolomite, the greater the density, the higher the connectivity, and the lower the tortuosity of burrows, the better the physical properties of the muddy carbonate rocks are.

Abstract Background The fragrant flower plant Osmanthus fragrans has an extremely rare androdioecious breeding system displaying the occurrence of males and hermaphrodites in a single population, which occupies a crucial intermediate stage in the evolutionary transition between hermaphroditism and dioecy. However, the molecular mechanism of androdioecy plant is very limited and still largely unknown. Results Here, we used SWATH-MS-based quantitative approach to study the proteome changes between male and hermaphroditic O. fragrans pistils. A total of 428 proteins of diverse functions were determined to show significant abundance changes including 210 up-regulated and 218 down-regulated proteins in male compared to hermaphroditic pistils. Functional categorization revealed that the differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) primarily distributed in the carbohydrate metabolism, secondary metabolism as well as signaling cascades. Further experimental analysis showed the substantial carbohydrates accumulation associated with promoted net photosynthetic rate and water use efficiency were observed in purplish red pedicel of hermaphroditic flower compared with green pedicel of male flower, implicating glucose metabolism serves as nutritional modulator for the differentiation of male and hermaphroditic flower. Meanwhile, the entire upregulation of secondary metabolism including flavonoids, isoprenoids and lignins seem to protect and maintain the male function in male flowers, well explaining important feature of androdioecy that aborted pistil of a male flower still has a male function. Furthermore, nine selected DEPs were validated via gene expression analysis, suggesting an extra layer of post-transcriptional regulation occurs during O. fragrans floral development. Conclusion Taken together, our findings represent the first SWATH-MS-based proteomic report in androdioecy plant O. fragrans, which reveal carbohydrate metabolism, secondary metabolism and post-transcriptional regulation contributing to the androdioecy breeding system and ultimately extend our understanding on genetic basis as well as the industrialization development of O. fragrans.

BackgroundRegular Baduanjin exercise intervention was proven to be beneficial in improving the cognitive ability and physical performance of older adults with different health conditions but was unclear to influence the structural plasticity of the hippocampus. This study aimed to explore the modulation of hippocampal subregions as a mechanism by which Baduanjin exercise improves cognitive frailty in older adults.MethodsA total of 102 community-dwelling older adults with cognitive frailty were recruited and randomly allocated to the Baduanjin exercise training group and usual physical activity control group. The participants in the Baduanjin exercise training group participated in a 24-week Baduanjin exercise intervention program with an exercise frequency of 60 min per day, 3 days per week. Cognitive ability and physical frailty were assessed, and MRI scans were performed on all participants at baseline and after 24 weeks of intervention. The structural MRI data were processed with MRIConvert (version 2.0 Rev. 235) and FreeSurfer (version 6.0.0) software. Data analyses were performed using the independent sample t tests/Mann–Whitney U tests with the Bonferroni correction, mixed linear model, correlation, or mediation analysis by the SPSS 24.0 software (IBM Corp, Armonk, NY, United States).ResultsAfter 24 weeks of intervention, a statistically significant increase was found for the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) scores (p = 0.002) with a large effect size (Cohen’s d = 0.94) and the significant interaction effect (Pgoup × time

BackgroundThe continuous decline in the physical fitness of college students has become a serious social problem worldwide. Therefore, it is necessary to explore the effective method improving college students' physique. Previous studies have shown that Baduanjin exercise is beneficial in improving sleeping quality, mental health, body flexibility, and body physique. However, the evidence is unclear whether Baduanjin exercise can be recommended as an effective exercise to promote health-related physical fitness of college students.MethodsA total of 130 college students were recruited and randomly allocated to either the Baduanjin training or the control group at a ratio of 1:1. The students in the Baduanjin training group received a 12-week supervised Baduanjin exercise training intervention with a frequency of 1 h each day and 4 days per week, while those in the control group did not receive any specific exercise intervention and were informed to maintain their original lifestyle for 12 weeks. The outcomes of health-related physical fitness involving measurements of body flexibility, muscular strength, cardiopulmonary fitness, and body endurance were measured at baseline and after the 12-week intervention period. Mixed linear model was used to analyze the effect of the Baduanjin exercise intervention.ResultsMixed linear model analyses showed that the Baduanjin training group had a significant increase in the composite scores of health-related physical fitness compared to the control group from baseline to 12-week post-intervention with a medium effect size (d = 0.68, P = 0.006). Moreover, there were significant improvements in vital capacity, physical flexibility, 800/1,000 m endurance running, and body composition (measured by body mass index (BMI), fat mass and body fat ratio) at end of 12-week intervention in the Baduanjin training group. Human fetal adrenal glands produce substantial amounts of dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), which is one of the most important precursors of sex hormones. However, the underlying biological mechanism remains largely unknown. Herein, we sequenced human fetal adrenal glands and gonads from 7 to 14 gestational weeks (GW) via 10× Genomics single-cell transcriptome techniques, reconstructed their location information by spatial transcriptomics. Relative to gonads, adrenal glands begin to synthesize steroids early. The coordination among steroidogenic cells and multiple non-steroidogenic cells promotes adrenal cortex construction and steroid synthesis. Notably, during the window of sexual differentiation (8–12 GW), key enzyme gene expression shifts to accelerate DHEA synthesis in males and cortisol synthesis in females. Our research highlights the robustness of the action of fetal adrenal glands on gonads to modify the process of sexual differentiation.

Ducks and wild aquatic birds are the natural reservoirs of avian influenza viruses. However, the host proteome response that causes disease in vivo by the H5N1 HPAI virus is still unclear. This study presented a comprehensive analysis of the proteome response in Muscovy duck lung tissue during 3 days of infection with either a highly virulent DK383 or an avirulent DK212. An unbiased strategy- isobaric tags for relative and absolute quantitation (iTRAQ) in conjunction with high-performance liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) was utilized to investigate the infection mechanism. Pathways derived from analysis of 292 significantly altered proteins may contribute to the high pathogenic nature and disease progression of H5N1 viruses. Global proteome profiles indicated improved correlation with the virus titers and gene expression patterns between the two strains of the H5N1 virus. DK383 replicated more efficiently and induced a stronger response specific to severe disease. While proteins involved in the immune response of neutrophils were increased markedly by DK383, DK212 evoked a distinct response characterized by an increase in proteins involved in the maturation of dendritic cells, adhesion of phagocytes, and immune response of macrophages. The differentially activated Akt/mTOR/p70S6K pathway might involve in the host response to H5N1 viruses. Therefore, systematically integrated with datasets from primary genomic and virus titer results, proteomic analyses may help reveal the potential pathogenesis.
