Abstract

A ballistic impact experiment and numerical simulation study of Kevlar/Vinyl and E-glass/Vinyl 3D orthogonal woven composite by a spherical bullet is presented in this paper. The experiment shows that the ballistic performance of Kevlar29/Vinyl is better than E-glass/Vinyl 3D orthogonal woven composite. The analysis of damage modes points out that compression/shear failure mechanism occurs on the front side while tensile failure on the back side. The existence of Z yarns is the main cause of in-plane energy absorption mechanism. In numerical simulation, the orthogonal isotropic constitutive equation with damage tensor and Hashin failure criterion are adopted. Simulation of the penetration process is presented and the residual velocity calculated is fitted to the experimental values. Finally, the details of damage evolution of x-direction fibers and in-plane matrix are studied

Abstract

Barley stripe mosaic virus (BSMV) induces massive actin filament thickening at the infection front of infected Nicotiana benthamiana leaves. To determine the mechanisms leading to actin remodeling, fluorescent protein fusions of the BSMV triple gene block (TGB) proteins were coexpressed in cells with the actin marker DsRed: Talin. TGB ectopic expression experiments revealed that TGB3 is a major elicitor of filament thickening, that TGB2 resulted in formation of intermediate DsRed:Talin filaments, and that TGB1 alone had no obvious effects on actin filament structure. Latrunculin B (LatB) treatments retarded BSMV cell-to-cell movement, disrupted actin filament organization, and dramatically decreased the proportion of paired TGB3 foci appearing at the cell wall (CW). BSMV infection of transgenic plants tagged with GFP-KDEL exhibited membrane proliferation and vesicle formation that were especially evident around the nucleus. Similar membrane proliferation occurred in plants expressing TGB2 and/or TGB3, and DsRed: Talin fluorescence in these plants colocalized with the ER vesicles. TGB3 also associated with the Golgi apparatus and overlapped with cortical vesicles appearing at the cell periphery. Brefeldin A treatments disrupted Golgi and also altered vesicles at the CW, but failed to interfere with TGB CW localization. Our results indicate that actin cytoskeleton interactions are important in BSMV cell-to-cell movement and for CW localization of TGB3.

Abstract

Classical and quantum dynamics of superradiance in macroscopic samples of active media is discussed. Along with the usual convective instability, the absolute instability is analyzed as the basis of the superradiance phenomenon. Various regimes of superradiance in a conducting inverted two-level medium immersed in the plasma under and out of the condition of plasma-dipole resonance are described and compared. It is shown that the absolute instability of long-wavelength high-frequency polarization waves results in the pulsed generation of strong nonradiating electric fields. The remarkable phenomenon of macroscopic manifestation of quantum fluctuations in the observable parameters of superradiance is described. A general method of the quantization of unstable normal modes in the systems of coupled partial modes with opposite-sign energies is developed. Delay-time statistics of the superradiance pulse is examined in detail. New experiments for the observation of the outlined effects in the nonequilibrium activated semi-conductors and partially ionized gases, e.g. in impulsive discharge, in the infrared range are proposed and appropriate estimates are provided., SCOPUS: ar.j, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

Abstract

Two kinds of potassium lithium niobate (KLN) crystals with different crystal composition have been grown by the Czochralski method from different starting compositions. We report optical spectra of the crystals in the UV-VIS and IR region and their electro-optic effects. The results prove that measurements of the absorption edge and the OH vibration modes are sensitive method for characterizing the crystal composition of the KLN crystals. We also observe that the effective electro-optic coefficient (r c ) of the nearly stoichiometric KLN crystals is much larger than that of the non-stoichiometric KLN crystals with an almost one order of magnitude. Abstract

We have used hydroelastic waves to treat the closed trauma of the soft tissue. The Shu Huo Jiu (S.H.J.) which is the Chinese traditional medicine alcohol, was used as the fluid medium for generating the pressure waves. The biomechanical model was established and analysed. Both animal and human tests have been made. A practical system was designed, constructed and clinically tested to treat the closed trauma, such as the bruise, contusion, sprain etc.. This system was found to be effective.

45. Quantitative Aspects of Glycine and Alanine Nitrogen Metabolism in Postabsorptive Young Men: Effects of Level of Nitrogen and Dispensable Amino Acid Intake

Abstract

The nutritionally indispensable amino acids (IAA) alone do not maintain body nitrogen (N) balance; a source of “nonspecific” nitrogen from dispensable amino acids (DAA), such as from glycine and alanine or other N compounds, is required. However, the in vivo regulation of the metabolism of these amino acids in humans with varying nutritional states has received little study. Hence, the effects of N intake and the IAA:DAA ratio on kinetic aspects of whole-body alanine and glycine metabolism were examined in eight healthy young adult male subjects. They received an L-amino acid diet supplying N equivalent to about 1.5 g and 0.6 g protein (N × 6.25) per kilogram body weight per day. All were studies at each N level with the IAA:DAA ratio (wt/wt) of 1:1 and 1:0, each for a 7-d diet period. Constant primed, intravenous infusions of L-[l-13C]leucine together with either L-[15N]alanine (four subjects) or [15N]glycine (four subjects) were given to each subject at the end of the diet period, after an overnight fast, to determine rates of de novo whole-body alanine and glycine N synthesis. The rate of alanine synthesis was similar (P> 0.05) for all four diets. Glycine de novo N synthesis declined (P< 0.01) with removal of dietary DAA, especially at the lower intake, where the mean rates [micromoles/(kilogram·hour)] were 59 and 20 for 1:1 and 1:0 ratios, respectively. The possible significance of reduced rates of glycine N synthesis for maintenance of protein nutritional status in the healthy adult is discussed.
