1. Nucleon-pair truncation of the shell model for medium-heavy nuclei

Abstract

Background: Computationally tractable models of atomic nuclei is a long-time goal of nuclear structure physics. A flexible framework which easily includes excited states and many-body correlations is the configuration-interaction shell model (SM), but the exponential growth of the basis means one needs an efficient truncation scheme, ideally one that includes both deformation and pairing correlations. Purpose: We propose an efficient truncation scheme of the SM: starting from a pair condensate variationally defined by Hartree-Fock single-particle states and the particle-number conserved Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (NBCS) approximation, we carry out projection of states with good angular momentum. Methods: After generating Hartree-Fock single-particle states with Kramers degeneracy in a SM space, we optimize the pair amplitudes in the NBCS by minimizing the energy, and then use linear algebra projection (LAP) of states with good angular momentum. Both NBCS and LAP are computationally fast. Results: Our calculations yield good agreement with full configuration-interaction SM calculations for low-lying states of transitional and rotational nuclei with axially symmetric and triaxial deformation in medium- and heavy-mass regions: $^{44,46,48}$Ti, $^{48,50}$Cr, $^{52}$Fe, $^{60,62,64}$Zn, $^{66,68}$Ge, $^{68}$Se, and $^{108,110}$Xe. We predict low-lying states of $^{112-114}\textrm{Ba}$ and $^{116-120}\textrm{Ce}$, nuclei difficult to reach by large-scale SM calculations. Conclusions: Both pair correlation and the configuration mixing between different intrinsic states play a key role in reproducing collectivity and shape coexistence, demonstrating the utility of this truncation scheme of the SM to study transitional and deformed nuclei.

Abstract

The Global Consortium for the Classification of Fungi and fungus-like taxa is an international initiative of more than 550 mycologists to develop an electronic structure for the classification of these organisms. The members of the Consortium originate from 55 countries/regions worldwide, from a wide range of disciplines, and include senior, mid-career and early-career mycologists and plant pathologists. The Consortium will publish a biannual update of the Outline of Fungi and fungus-like taxa, to act as an international scheme for other scientists. Notes on all newly published taxa at or above the level of species will be prepared and published online on the Outline of Fungi website (https://www.outlineoffungi.org/), and these will be finally published in the biannual edition of the Outline of Fungi and fungus-like taxa. Comments on recent important taxonomic opinions on controversial topics will be included in the biannual outline. For example, 'to promote a more stable taxonomy in Fusarium given the divergences over its generic delimitation', or 'are there too many genera in the Boletales?' and even more importantly, 'what should be done with the tremendously diverse 'dark fungal taxa?' There are undeniable differences in mycologists' perceptions and opinions regarding species classification as well as the establishment of new species. Given the pluralistic nature of fungal taxonomy and its implications for species concepts and the nature of species, this consortium aims to provide a platform to better refine and stabilise fungal classification, taking into consideration views from different parties. In the future, a confidential voting system will be set up to gauge the opinions of all mycologists in the Consortium on important topics. 20. Circular RNA circGFRA1 promotes angiogenesis, cell proliferation and migration of hepatocellular carcinoma by combining with miR-149.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to explore the effect of circGFRA1 on the progression of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and its underlying mechanism. PATIENTS AND METHODS: First, quantitative Real Time-Polymerase Chain Reaction (qRT-PCR) was conducted to detect the level of circGFRA1 in HCC tissues and cells. Survival analysis was applied to detect the effect of highly expressed circGFRA1 on the prognosis of HCC patients. Subsequently, circGFRA1 level was silenced in HCC cells, and proliferative, migration and angiogenesis activity of HCC cells was examined using Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8), transwell test, and angiogenesis experiment. Then, we predicted the binding target of circGFRA1 through the bioinformatics website, and verified it through qRT-PCR and Dual-Luciferase reporter assay. Lastly, the interaction between them was verified through a series of in vitro experiments. RESULTS: qRT-PCR analysis showed that circGFRA1 was abnormally highly expressed in HCC tissues and HCC cells, and the high expression of circGFRA1 may lead to poor prognosis in patients with HCC. After transfecting si-circGFRA1 in HCC cells, CCK-8 and transwell experiments showed that the proliferative ability and migration of HCC cells were inhibited. Moreover, angiogenesis experiments showed that the knockdown of circGFRA1 can inhibit the blood vessels replenishment of HCC cells. The bioinformatics website suggested that miR-149 may be able to bind circGFRA1. MiR-149 was upregulated by the knockdown of circGFRA1 in HCC cells. Pearson analysis suggested that the expression levels of the two genes were negatively correlated. Dual-Luciferase reporter assay further indicated that circGFRA1 can bind to miR-149. Reverse experiment showed that the knockdown of miR-149 can partially restore the inhibited proliferative, migration, and angiogenesis activity of HCC cells caused by circGFRA1 knockdown. CONCLUSIONS: CircGFRA1 is highly expressed in HCC and its level is negatively correlated with miR-149 expression. Abstract

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the differences in gene expression profiles of adult articular cartilage with endemic osteoarthritis (OA), Kashin-Beck disease (KBD), and the same regions in the normal joint. METHODS: The messenger RNA expression profiles of articular cartilage with KBD diagnosed according to "Diagnosing Criteria of Kashin-Beck Disease in China" were compared with the normal cartilage. Total RNA isolated separately from four pairs of the KBD and normal cartilage samples were evaluated by oligonucleotide microarray analysis. The microarray data were confirmed by quantitative real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) amplification and were compared with previously published experiments. RESULTS: About 4100 transcripts, which corresponded to 35% of the expressed transcripts, showed >or=twofold differences in expression between the cartilage tissues in pairs. 41. Influence of structure on the morphology of CaSO4· nH2O ( n = 0, 0·5, 2): A molecular simulation study.

Abstract

Based on the modification of MSXX and flexible, three centred force field, the influence of structure on intrinsic morphology of CaSO4· nH2O ( n = 0, 0·5 and 2) was investigated by attachment energy method. The decahedral CaSO4 is composed of CaO8 and SO4 polyhedrons stacking along [001], the rod-like CaSO4·0·5H2O is composed of CaO8-S-CaO9 chains linked with H2O along c-axis and the disk-like CaSO4·2H2O is composed of the CaSO4/H2O double sheets stacked alternately along [020]. The anisotropy of CaSO4·0·5H2O should be attributed to the chain-like hydrogen bond along c-axis, and the disk-like shape of CaSO4·2H2O may be connected with the weak mesh-like hydrogen bond between the CaSO4/H2O double sheets. Abstract

Pheromone-binding proteins ( PBPs) are distributed widely on the antennae of insects, and they are believed to be involved in the process of chemical signal transduction, but their interaction with chemicals is largely unknown. Here, we present our findings on the key amino acid residues of PBPs in the gypsy moth, Lymantria dispar. Potential key residues were screened with the Calculate Mutation Energy program and molecular docking methods. Mutated proteins were obtained by mutating residues to alanine via site-directed mutagenesis. Circular dichroism ( CD) spectroscopy showed that the mutated proteins formed α-helix, and the stability of protein structure was influenced due to mutations. Fluorescence binding assays were further conducted with the mutated proteins, sex pheromones and analogues. Results showed that to PBP 1, tyrosine at position 41 and phenylalanine at position 76 could be the key amino acid residues influencing the stability of structure; in addition, phenylalanine at 36 and lysine at position 94 could be key amino acid residues interacting with chemicals. To PBP 2, glycine at position 49, phenylalanine at position 76 and lysine at position 121 could be the key amino acid residues in the structural stability. These results shed light on the relationship between the specific amino acids and functions of PBPs in transmitting the chemical signals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
