Cerium oxide nanoparticles (CeNPs) have emerged as a potent therapeutic agent in the realm of wound healing, attributing their efficacy predominantly to their exceptional antioxidant properties. Mimicking the activity of endogenous antioxidant enzymes, CeNPs alleviate oxidative stress and curtail the generation of inflammatory mediators, thus expediting the wound healing process. Their application spans various disease models, showcasing therapeutic potential in treating inflammatory responses and infections, particularly in oxidative stress-induced chronic wounds such as diabetic ulcers, radiation-induced skin injuries, and psoriasis. Despite the promising advancements in laboratory studies, the clinical translation of CeNPs is challenged by several factors, including biocompatibility, toxicity, effective drug delivery, and the development of multifunctional compounds. Addressing these challenges necessitates advancements in CeNP synthesis and functionalization, novel nano delivery systems, and comprehensive bio effectiveness and safety evaluations. This paper reviews the progress of CeNPs in wound healing, highlighting their mechanisms, applications, challenges, and future perspectives in clinical therapeutics.

In this work, Mg98.5Zn0.5RE1 (RE = Gd and/or Y) and Mg97Zn1Y2 (at%) alloys were subjected to homogenization and equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) to systematically compare the microstructure evolution and mechanical properties. The results indicate that, instead of the lamellar LPSO phases in the as-cast Mg-Zn-Y series alloys, the β-Mg5(Gd, Zn) phases appear in the as-cast Mg98.5Zn0.5Gd1 alloy which tend to be dissolved during homogenization. The furnace cooling after homogenization promotes the precipitation of numerous lamellar LPSO phases in all the studied alloys which inhibit the DRX behavior but facilitate the operation of kinking deformation during ECAP for the Mg98.5Zn0.5RE1 alloys, especially the Mg98.5Zn0.5Gd1 one. After the 5p-ECAP process at 350 °C, the larger density of kink bands, more LAGBs (low-angle grain boundaries) and lower SFB (Schmid factor for basal slip) combine to endow the Mg98.5Zn0.5Gd1 alloy with the higher strength-ductility synergy, exhibiting the tensile yield strength (TYS) of 214 MPa and elongation of 9.6%. The Mg97Zn1Y2 alloy with the larger volume fraction of interdendritic LPSO phases and dynamically recrystallized (DRXed) regions exhibits the superior ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of 277 MPa and moderate elongation of 7.2%.

Background: Enhanced levels of angiotensin-2 (Ang-II) causes hypertensive heart failure (HHF) through non-hemodynamical and hemodynamical alterations. 20(S)-ginsenoside Rh2 (20(S)-Rh2) is a natural ginseng compound with numerous cardiovascular benefits. This investigation elucidates the influence of 20(S)-Rh2 on Ang-II-induced heart failure and cardiac alterations. Methods: Ang-II was administered in C57BL/6 mice for 4 weeks to induce HHF. In the last 2 weeks of treatment, 20(S)-Rh2 was orally administered in mice to assess the potential 20(S)-Rh2 mechanism. Subsequently, RNA sequencing was carried out. Results: It was indicated that 20(S)-Rh2 suppresses myocardial fibrosis, hypertrophy, and inflammation, thereby inhibiting cardiac disruption in Ang-II-challenged mice without affecting blood pressure. According to the RNA sequencing data, this cardio-protective effect was linked with the (JNK)/AP 1 pathway. 20(S)-Rh2 alleviated heart tissue and cardiomyocytes inflammation by inhibiting the Ang-II-mediated JNK/AP-1 pathway. Within cardiomyocytes, JNK or AP-1 absence abolished the anti-inflammatory effects of 20(S)-Rh2. Conclusion: This study investigation indicated that 20(S)-Rh2 prevents cardiovascular dysfunction induced by Ang-II induced by decreasing JNK-regulated inflammatory responses, providing evidence for its use as an efficient regimen for HHF.

Ionizing radiation can cause changes in nervous system function. However, the underlying mechanism remains unclear. In this study, Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) was irradiated with 75 Gy of 60Co whole-body γ radiation. Behavioral indicators (head thrashes, touch avoidance, and foraging), and the development of dopaminergic neurons related to behavioral function, were evaluated to assess the effects of ionizing radiation on nervous system function in C. elegans. Various behaviors were impaired after whole-body irradiation and degeneration of dopamine neurons was observed. This suggests that 75 Gy of γ radiation is sufficient to induce nervous system dysfunction. The genes nhr-76 and crm-1, which are reported to be related to nervous system function in human and mouse, were screened by transcriptome sequencing and bioinformatics analysis after irradiation or sham irradiation. The expression levels of these two genes were increased after radiation. Next, RNAi technology was used to inhibit the expression of crm-1, a gene whose homologs are associated with motor neuron development in other species. Downregulation of crm-1 expression effectively alleviated the deleterious effects of ionizing radiation on head thrashes and touch avoidance. It was also found that the expression level of crm-1 was regulated by the nuclear receptor gene nhr-76. The results of this study suggest that knocking down the expression level of nhr-76 can reduce the expression level of crm-1, while down-regulating the expression level of crm-1 can alleviate behavioral disorders induced by ionizing radiation. Therefore, inhibition of crm-1 may be of interest as a potential therapeutic target for ionizing radiation-induced neurological dysfunction.

Ni3Si2O5(OH)4 rods (NS) were synthesized via a hydrothermal method, employing natural wollastonite as a template. The hierarchical Ni3Si2O5(OH)4 rods exhibited vertically oriented nanosheets, resulting in a substantial increase in the specific surface area (from 2.24 m2/g to 178.4 m2/g). Subsequently, a CdS/Ni3Si2O5(OH)4 composite photocatalyst (CdS/NS) was prepared using a chemical deposition method. CdS was uniformly loaded onto the surface of the Ni3Si2O5(OH)4 nanosheets, successfully forming a heterojunction with Ni3Si2O5(OH)4. The CdS/NS photocatalyst in the presence of lactic acid as a sacrificial agent demonstrated an impressive H2 production rate of 4.05 mmol h−1 g−1, around 40 times higher than pure CdS. The photocorrosion of CdS was effectively solved after loading. After four cycles, the performance of CdS/NS remained stable, showing the potential for sustainable applications. After photoexcitation, electrons moved from Ni3Si2O5(OH)4 to the valence band of CdS, where they interacted with the holes via an enhanced interface contact. Simultaneously, electrons in CdS transitioned to its conduction band, facilitating hydrogenation. The enhanced performance was attributed to the improved CdS dispersion by Ni3Si2O5(OH)4 loading and efficient photogenerated carrier separation through the heterojunction formation. This work provides new perspectives for broadening the applications of mineral materials and developing heterojunction photocatalysts with good dispersibility and recyclability.

In order to enhance the degree of binding reaction of TiO2 in titanium-containing ceramic glazes and prevent the reaction of its transformation into rutile to eliminate the yellowing phenomenon of the glaze surface, an apatite–TiO2 composite opacifier (ATO) was prepared through the mechanical grinding of hydroxyapatite and anatase TiO2. The properties, opacification mechanism, and yellowing inhibition of the prepared ceramic glazes were studied. The results show that the ATO is characterized by a uniform coating of TiO2 on the surface of the apatite and the formation of close chemical bonding between the apatite and TiO2. The ceramic glaze surface when using an ATO has a white appearance and excellent opacification performance. When an ATO was used, the L*, a*, and b* values of the glaze were 89.99, −0.85, and 3.37, respectively, which were comparable to those of a ZrSiO4 glaze (L*, a*, and b* were 88.24, −0.02, and 2.29, respectively). The opacification of the glaze was slightly lower than that of the TiO2 glaze (L* value was 92.13), but the appearance changed from yellow to the white of the TiO2 glaze (b* value was 9.18). The ceramic glaze layer when using an ATO mainly consists of titanite, glass phase, and a small amount of quartz, and the opacification mechanism is the crystallization of the generated titanite. ATOs can play an active role in solving the critical problem that arises when TiO2 replaces ZrSiO4 as an opacifier.

Macrofungi are well-known as edible-medicinal mushrooms, which belong mostly to Basidiomycota, with a few from Ascomycota. In recent years, macrofungi have been recognized as a rich resource of structurally unique secondary metabolites, demonstrating a wide range of bioactivities, including anti-tumor, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antimalarial, neuro-protective, hypoglycemic, and hypolipidemic activities. This review highlights over 270 natural products produced by 17 families of macrofungi covering 2017 to 2023, including their structures, bioactivities, and related molecular mechanisms.

Seed germination is among the most crucial and vulnerable stages in plant life cycles. Quercus marlipoensis is a critically endangered sclerophyllous oak. Only one population has ever been found worldwide in the tropical montane cloud forests of southeastern Yunnan, China, and it has shown difficulties with regeneration. However, its seed biological traits and key restrictive germination factors remain unknown. We investigate the impacts of scarification, temperature, and water potential on the seed germination of Q. marlipoensis. Results show that the seeds show typical epicotyl dormancy. The seed germination increased when removing part or all of the pericarp and part of the cotyledon (one-third and two-thirds). The seeds can germinate at 5 to 30 °C, but the highest T50 was achieved at 25 °C. When the water potential decreased from 0 to −1.0 MPa, the germination rate decreased but the germination time increased. Q. marlipoensis seeds are typically recalcitrant and highly sensitive to moisture loss, but the species can tolerate animal predation and low germination temperatures. The more frequent climatic extremes and droughts in the Indo-China region will severely degrade its natural habitats. Therefore, ex situ conservation to preserve its germplasm and introduce seedlings into a suitable habitat are essential for its conservation management.

This paper proposes a novel task-driven flexible array beampattern synthesis model for self-organized drone swarms according to their task requirements so that they can adjust their positions appropriately and point in a specific direction. First, we formulate the novel beampattern synthesis model using the drone-swarm antenna position and weight vector as the optimization variables and the maximum driving distance as the constraint. Then, the Lawson criterion is used to simplify the objective function, and the two kinds of optimization variables of antenna position and weight vector are reduced to a single kind of variable optimization problem of antenna position, alleviating the optimization difficulty caused by the usage of coupled variables. Simultaneously, auxiliary variables are introduced to separate the constraints from the complex objective function, and the Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM）is used to slove the problem, which reduces the difficulty of solving a highly nonlinear optimization problem with constraints,. In addition, we extend this method to a scenario in which the provided Direction Of Arrival (DOA）of interest is imprecise. Simulation results show that the proposed method can obtain lower sidelobe levels than previous methods.

Abstract Introduction The widespread use of brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has revealed the correlation between enlarged perivascular spaces (EPVS) and cognitive impairment (CI). However, few studies have examined the correlation between MRI-visible EPVS and CI in patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD) and vascular parkinsonism (VaP). This study explored how the number and main location of EPVS in PD and VaP are correlated with the occurrence of CI in these diseases to provide radiology markers and other evidence for early clinical diagnosis in a Chinese cohort. Methods Clinical data were prospectively collected from 77 patients: 26 patients clinically diagnosed with PD or probable PD, 19 patients clinically diagnosed with VaP, and 32 control subjects with normal cognitive function and no stroke or parkinsonism. The patients with PD and VaP were divided into a CI group and a no CI (NCI) group according to the Montreal Cognitive Assessment Beijing version (MoCA-BJ). The relevant clinical data were statistically analysed. Results The centrum semiovale (CSO)-EPVS, lacunes, Fazekas scores, global cortical atrophy scale (GCA) scores, Koedam posterior atrophy visual scale (KS) scores, and medial temporal atrophy (MTA) scores were higher in the PD-CI and VaP-CI groups than in the control group (adjusted P 0.05). Conclusion VaP-CI results from multiple factors and is significantly associated with BG-EPVS, lacunes, white matter hyperintensities and brain atrophy. BG-EPVS can be used as an imaging marker to distinguish VaP-CI from PD-CI.

Radon exposure is significantly associated with lung cancer. Radon concentration is currently reduced mainly by physical methods, but there is a lack of protective drugs or biochemical reagents for radon damage. This study aimed to explore the protective effect of polydatin (PD) on the radon-exposed injury. The results showed that PD can significantly reduce ROS level, raise SOD activity, weaken the migration ability, increase E-cad, and decrease mesenchymal cell surface markers (FN1, Vimentin, N-cad, α-SMA, and Snail) in radon-exposed epithelial cells. In vivo, PD increased the mice weight, promoted SOD activity, and decreased MDA content, the number of bullae, pulmonary septum thickness, lung collagenous fibers, and mesenchymal cell surface markers. Furthermore, PD inhibited p-PI3K, p-AKT, and p-mTOR expression. Compared with directly adding PD on radon-exposed cells, adding PD before and after radon exposure could more obviously improve the adhesion of radon-exposed cells, significantly alleviate the migration ability, and more significantly reduce mesenchyme markers and p-AKT and p-mTOR. These results indicate that PD can reduce oxidative stress, weaken epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and lung fibrosis in radon-exposed cells/mice, and have good radiation protection against radon injury. The mechanism is related to the inhibition of the PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway.

To estimate the physical dose of skin and key organs in a case of overexposure during a cardiac interventional procedure. Methods: The female patient aged 50 suffered from overexposure during cardiac interventional therapy in a hospital, Xinxiang city, Henan province, China in January 2020. The mesh-type phantom for the patient was constructed based on the adult mesh-type reference computational phantoms (MRCPs) released by the International Commission on Radiological Protection Publication 145 (ICRP145) and phantom deformation technology. Models of exposure scenario were constructed and simulated with particle and heavy ion transport code system (PHITS) according to exposure conditions. Results: The maximum absorbed dose of key organs/tissues under irradiation in posteroanterior (PA) and 30° left anterior oblique directions(LOA) was 632.4 and 305.6 ​mGy, respectively. The left lung, heart, and left mammary gland received a larger dose under both irradiation conditions. Water pollution and control are important issues of our lasting concern. Environmental media often contains a variety of compounds. Tritium is widely present in nature due to human activities. As an endocrine disruptor, genistein is widely found in water body. Will it cause damage when combined with tritiated water and genistein? In this study, Zebrafish embryos were randomly divided into 4 groups: blank control group (simple E3 medium), tritiated water exposure group (tritiated water with a final concentration of 3.7*102Bq/mL in the medium), and genistein exposure group (the final concentration of 1.4 mg/L genistein in the medium) and the combined exposure group of tritiated water and genistein (3.7*102 Bq/mL tritium water +1.4 mg/L genistein). The results show that tritiated water with 3.7*102 Bq/ml exposure alone did not affect the development of zebrafish embryos. However, the survival rate, hatching rate and heart rate of zebrafish larvae decreased combined exposure with genistein, and the abnormality rate and apoptotic cells in the embryos and the level of oxidative stress increased. The results of RNA sequencing showed that the combined exposure of tritiated water and genistein affected the gene expression of zebrafish embryos. Differential genes were mainly enriched in many pathways, such as p53 signaling pathway, steroid hormone biosynthesis, PPAR signaling pathway, metabolism of xenobiotics by cytochrome P450. The results of qRT-PCR and gene knockout experiment showed that cyp19a1b gene may plays an important role in the toxic effects of combined exposure.

BackgroundVascular dementia (VaD) mainly results from cerebral vascular lesions and tissue changes, which contribute to neurodegenerative processes. Effective therapeutic approaches to targeting angiogenesis may reduce mortality of VaD. Endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) play a key role in postnatal angiogenesis. Many exosomal microRNAs (exo-miRNAs) have been reported to involve in the development of dementia. The present study was designed to investigate whether the expression profile of the exo-miRNAs is significantly altered in patients with VaD and to reveal the function of differentially expressed miRNAs and the relevant mechanisms in EPC-mediated angiogenesis in VaD rat model.ResultsExosomes isolated from serum of patients with VaD (n = 7) and age-matched control subjects (n = 7), and miRNA sequencing and bioinformatics analysis found that circulating exosome miRNA-155-5p, miRNA-154-5p, miR-132-5p, and miR-1294 were upregulated in patients with VaD. The expression of miRNA-154-5p was further verified to be upregulated in clinical samples (n = 23) and 2-vessel occlusion-induced VaD rat model by reverse transcription quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR). Notably, miRNA-154-5p inhibition in bone marrow-EPCs (BM-EPCs) from VaD rats improved EPC functions, including tube formation, migration, and adhesion, and elevated concentrations of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and stromal cell-derived factor-1α (SDF-1α). The mRNA levels of ICAM-1, VCAM-1, and MCP-1 were reduced in miRNA-154-5p-inhibited EPCs. In addition, miRNA-154-5p inhibition increased the level of superoxide dismutase (SOD), and decreased reactive oxygen species (ROS) in EPCs. PRKAA2 was chosen as a promising target gene of miR-154-5p, and miRNA-154-5p inhibition upregulated the protein expression of AMPKα2. Furthermore, upregulation of miR-154-5p markedly diminished EPC functions and inhibited angiogenesis following EPC transplantation in VaD rats.ConclusionCirculating exo-miR-154-5p was upregulated in patients with VaD, and miR-154-5p upregulation was associated with impaired EPC functions and angiogenesis in VaD rat model. Therefore, miR-154-5p is a promising biomarker and therapeutic strategy for VaD.

Non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) have attracted wide attention in the field of ionizing radiation (IR). They have been found to be involved in cell development, proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis in both clinical radiotherapy and radiation protection studies. Despite the production of an increasing number of relevant reports in recent years, the molecular mechanisms involved are yet to be clearly understood. In the last few years, ncRNAs have received a lot of research attention, especially microRNAs, long noncoding RNAs, and circular RNAs, which have a well-known association with the development of human disease and are closely related to the biological phenotypic changes caused by IR. With recent developments of research methods, these ncRNAs might play a significant regulatory role in future radiation protection and radiotherapy. This review will summarize the research progress of various types of ncRNAs as biomarkers of IR and potential new targets for radiotherapy, aiming to provide references for future research and the formulation of new strategies.

The reproductive system is vulnerable to ionizing radiation, which is a hot research topic at present. We tested the effect of polydatin on spermatocytes(GC-1 cells) after X-ray irradiation. The reproductive damage model of C.elegans was established by 60Coγ-ray, and the protective effect of polydatin on reproductive damage caused by ionizing radiation was evaluated. We quantified the ROS levels of GC-1 cells and C.elegans after irradiation with polydatin and evaluated the anti-apoptosis effect of polydatin at proper concentration. Differential genes of C.elegans reproductive damage were screened out from transcriptome sequencing results and comparable GEO datasets. It was proved that 100μM polydatin significantly reduced the apoptosis of GC-1 cells induced by 2 Gy X-ray. In addition, the longevity, reproductive capacity, germ cell apoptosis and spawning and hatching capacity of polydatin were tested. The results showed that 100 μM polydatin content significantly increased the influence of 50 Gy 60Coγ-ray on reproductive capacity of C.elegans. Quantitative analysis of mRNA and protein levels of apoptosis-related genes and reproductive-related genes by qRT-PCR and Western blotcon firmed that polydatin with appropriate dosage had good protective effects on reproductive damage caused by radiation, which laid a foundation for the application research of polydatin in radiation protection.

The health of radiation workers has always been our focus. Epidemiological investigation shows that long-term exposure to low-dose ionizing radiation can affect human health, especially cancer and cardiovascular disease, and there are many studies on it. However, up to now, there have been few reports on the research of blood and biological samples from radiation workers. In this study, radiation workers and healthy control groups were strictly screened, and the transcriptome of mRNA and circRNA was sequenced by extracting their peripheral venous blood. At the same time, appropriate data sets were selected in the GEO database for bioinformatics analysis, and circRNA-miRNA-mRNA network was constructed. We identified 9 different circular ribonucleic acids, 3 tiny ribonucleic acids, and 2 central genes (NOD 2 and IRF 7). These differentially expressed genes and non-coding RNA are closely related to ionizing radiation damage, and play an important role as biological markers. In conclusion, this study may provide new insights into the role of the circRNA-miRNA-mRNA regulatory network in the health of radiation workers, and provides a new strategy for the future study of radiation biology.

In recent years, vehicle emissions have become one of the important pollutant sources of the urban atmosphere. Scholars and decision-makers are constantly expected to accurately grasp the dispersion of vehicle pollutants to formulate a series of policies and strategies which can facilitate a friendly and sustainable urban environment, such as controlling the total number of vehicles, requiring higher emission standards, promoting new energy vehicles, improving public transit service, and optimizing non-motorized transportation systems. This paper provides a review of the mechanism research methods and mathematical modeling approaches for urban vehicle pollutant dispersion. The mechanism research methods reviewed include field measurements, wind tunnel experiments, and numerical simulations. The modeling approaches involve two kinds of popular models: Box models (STREET, CPBM, AURORA, PBM) and Gaussian models (CALINE, HIWAY, OSPM, CALPUFF, R-LINE, ADMS series, EPISODE, CityChem, SIRANE, MUNICH). Moreover, this paper clarifies the basic assumption, fundamental principle, related research, applicable conditions, and limitations of these mechanism research methods and modeling approaches.

Guizhou Province is covered by a large area of carbonate rocks where, with a higher background of heavy metals under the geochemical anomaly, more than 3.6 × 105 ha of heavy metal–contaminated soil in the northwest area is related to historical indigenous zinc smelting. To explore the superposition effect of industrial source atmospheric deposition on soil, two watersheds were selected for study: 1) Maoshui reservoir watershed (MS), where there is a zinc smelting plant, and 2) Haishe lake watershed (HS), which was the control. We collected atmospheric depositions and soil for 3 years and analyzed Cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), nickel (Ni), and zinc (Zn) content. The results show that the heavy metals in the atmospheric deposition of the pollution watershed in MS were much higher than those in the control site, HS. The deposition fluxes of Cd, Pb, Cr, Ni, and Zn in MS were 27.8, 602, 145, 43.9, and 2,225 mg·m−2·a−1, respectively, and were 1.37–2.01 times higher than in HS. Soil heavy metals in MS were 1.01–5.69 times higher than in HS. The elevated concentrations were found focused from northeast to southwest around the plant but was distributed uniformly in HS. The average concentration of Cd, Pb, and Zn in the soil was 6.54, 67.4, and 264 mg·kg−1, respectively, in HS, which represents a high geochemical background even without pollution. After 13 years of deposition by prediction, the contribution of the atmospheric deposition on the soil in the zinc-smelting area was lowest, at 5.10%, for Ni, and highest, at 17.9%, for Cd. Principal component analysis of atmospheric deposition and soil heavy metals reflected that the pollution sources in MS were more diversification than those in HS. Zinc smelting atmospheric deposition showed superposition effects on the accumulation of heavy metals in soil under the geochemical anomaly in this region.

In order to solve the problem that there is a huge amount of port machinery operating state data, the traditional fault diagnosis method is difficult to effectively obtain the mechanical fault information from the massive data and also cannot accurately diagnose the fault. This paper presents a fault diagnosis method for port machinery based on the FastAP algorithm. By analyzing the characteristics of the FastAP algorithm, the algorithm is introduced into port machinery fault diagnosis, and a port machinery fault diagnosis model based on FastAP is proposed. Through simulation experiments, the algorithm and its application in port machinery fault diagnosis are verified. The experimental results show that compared with the standard AP algorithm, the FastAP algorithm performs well in the sum of similarity, clustering accuracy, and clustering calculation time and has better performance, which is more suitable for fault diagnosis. The fault diagnosis method based on the FastAP algorithm has a high diagnosis accuracy of port machinery fault, reaching more than 92%, and can accurately diagnose the normal state, inner and outer ring fault state, and rolling element fault state of the actual port mechanical belt conveyor. The research on remote control and fault diagnosis of port machinery equipment based on wireless communication technology can effectively solve the problem that there is a huge amount of port machinery operating state data, and the traditional fault diagnosis methods are difficult to effectively obtain mechanical fault information from the massive data and thus cannot accurately diagnose the fault.

Tritium is a water-soluble hydrogen isotope that releases beta rays during decay. In nature, tritium primarily exists as tritiated water (HTO), and its main source is nuclear power/processing plants. In recent decades, with the development of nuclear power industry, it is necessary to evaluate the impact of tritium on organisms. In this study, fertilized zebrafish embryos are treated with different HTO concentrations (3.7 × 103 Bq/ml, 3.7 × 104 Bq/ml, 3.7 × 105 Bq/ml). After treatment with HTO, the zebrafish embryos developed without evident morphological changes. Nevertheless, the heart rate increased and locomotor activity decreased significantly. In addition, RNA-sequencing shows that HTO can affect gene expressions. The differentially expressed genes are enriched through many physiological processes and intracellular signaling pathways, including cardiac, cardiovascular, and nervous system development and the metabolism of xenobiotics by cytochrome P450. Moreover, the concentrations of thyroid hormones in the zebrafish decrease and the expression of thyroid hormone-related genes is disordered after HTO treatment. Our results suggest that exposure to HTO may affect the physiology and behaviors of zebrafish through physiological processes and intracellular signaling pathways and provide a theoretical basis for ecological risk assessment of tritium.

Background: The immunoglobulin G synthesis rate (IgG SR) and immunoglobulin G (IgG) index are indicators of abnormal intrathecal humoural immune responses, and the albumin quotient (QALB) is an indicator used to evaluate the completeness of the blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier (BCB). No systematic reports regarding differences in Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) and chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (CIDP) are available. We assessed differences in the IgG SR, IgG index and QALB between GBS and CIDP patients in a Chinese cohort.Methods: A total of 234 patients were retrospectively enrolled in this study, and 167 clinically confirmed GBS and CIDP patients were selected. Meanwhile, 67 non-GBS and non-CIDP patients requiring cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) examination were enrolled as the control group. The IgG SR, IgG index and QALB were calculated using formulas. The relevant clinical data were subjected to statistical analysis.Results: Among the GBS and CIDP study groups and the control group, the QALB had the highest positive rate (80.00%) in the CIDP group (P < 0.01). The QALB stratification analysis showed that the ranges of 10 < QALB ≤ 30 were dominant in the GBS and CIDP groups, and the positive rate of CIDP was higher than that of GBS. Furthermore, a QALB ≤ 7 was dominant in the control group, and a QALB > 30 was dominant in the CIDP group. In receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis with the CIDP group as the trial group and the GBS group as the control group, the differences in the QALB were statistically significant (P < 0.01). To achieve a high specificity of 98~99%, the diagnostic cut-off value for the QALB was above 57.37 (sensitivity: 9.33%) or below 0.60 (sensitivity: 4.35%). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that the CIDP patients had a QALB higher than 57.37, and compared with that in the GBS patients, the difference in the QALB was statistically significant (P < 0.01).Conclusion: QALB elevation was associated with CIDP, while QALB values above 57.37 or below 0.60 had high specificity in differentiating between GBS and CIDP. In CIDP, the BCB is generally moderately to severely damaged; in GBS, the BCB is generally moderately damaged.

The underlying mechanisms of radiation-induced brain injury are poorly understood, although COX-2 inhibitors have been shown to reduce brain injury after irradiation. In the present study, the effect of celecoxib (a selective COX-2 inhibitor) pretreatment on radiation-induced injury to rat brain was studied by means of histopathological staining, evaluation of integrity of blood-brain barrier and detection of the expressions of inflammation-associated genes. The protective effect of celecoxib on human brain microvascular endothelial cells (HBMECs) against irradiation was examined and the potential mechanisms were explored. Colony formation assay and apoptosis assay were undertaken to evaluate the effect of celecoxib on the radiosensitivity of the HBMECs. ELISA was used to measure 6-keto-prostaglandin F1α (6-keto-PGF1α) and thromboxane B2 (TXB2) secretion. Western blot was employed to examine apoptosis-related proteins expressions. It was found that celecoxib protected rat from radiation-induced brain injury by maintaining the integrity of the blood-brain barrier and reducing inflammation in rat brain tissues. In addition, celecoxib showed a significant protective effect on HBMECs against irradiation, which involves inhibited apoptosis and decreased TXB2/6-keto-PGF1α ratio in brain vascular endothelial cells. In conclusion, celecoxib could alleviate radiation-induced brain injury in rats, which may be partially due to the protective effect on brain vascular endothelial cells from radiation-induced apoptosis.

Microdosimetry is a tool for the investigation of microscopic energy deposition of ionizing radiation. This work used Caenorhabditis elegans as a model to estimate the microdosimetric deposition level at the 60 Co gamma radiation. Monte Carlo software PHITS was employed to establish irradiated nematodes model. The dose deposition of the entire body and gonad irradiated to 100 Gy was calculated. The injury levels of radiation were evaluated by the detection of biological indicators. The result of microdosimetric experiment suggested that the dose of whole body of nematodes was estimated to be 99.9 ± 57.8 Gy, ranging from 19.6 to 332.2 Gy. The dose of gonad was predicted to be 129.4 ± 558.8 Gy (9.5-6597 Gy). The result of biological experiment suggested that there were little changes in the length of nematodes after irradiation. However, times of head thrash per minute and the spawning yield in 3 consecutive days decreased 27.1% and 94.7%, respectively. Nematodes in the irradiated group displayed heterogeneity. Through contour analysis, trends of behavior kinematics and reproductive capacity of irradiated nematodes proved to be consistent with the dose distribution levels estimated by microdosimetric model. Finally, C . elegans presented a suitable combined model of microdosimetry and biology for studying radiation.

Puerarin (PUR) and gastrodin (GAS) are often used in combined way for treating diseases caused by microcirculation disorders. The current study aimed to investigate the absorption and transportation mechanism of PUR and GAS and their interaction via Caco-2 monolayer cell model. In this work, the concentration in Caco-2 cell of PUR and GAS was determined by HPLC method. The bidirectional transport of PUR and GAS and the inhibition of drug efflux including verapamil and cyclosporine on the transport of these two components were studied. The mutual influence between PUR and GAS, especially the effect of the latter on the former of the bidirectional transport were also investigated. The transport of 50 μg·mL−1 PUR in Caco-2 cells has no obvious directionality. While the transport of 100 and 200 μg·mL−1 PUR presents a strong directionality, and this directionality can be inhibited by verapamil and cyclosporine. When PUR and GAS were used in combination, GAS could increase the absorption of PUR while PUR had no obvious influence on GAS. Therefore, the compatibility of PUR and GAS is reasonable, and GAS can promote the transmembrane transport of PUR, the effect of which is similar to that of verapamil.

Background: Both Guillain–Barré syndrome (GBS) and chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (CIDP) are neurodegenerative and inflammatory demyelination disorders. Sporadic reports showed that the increased levels of thyroid function and autoantibodies are associated with GBS, CIDP, or both, but no systematic study has been reported. We assessed the differences of thyroid function and autoantibodies between GBS and CIDP in a Chinese cohort.Methods: A total of 256 patients were enrolled in this study. 175 clinically confirmed GBS and CIDP patients were selected. Meanwhile, 81 patients hospitalized for diseases other than GBS or CIDP with mild symptoms were enrolled as a control group. Relevant clinical data, including thyroid function, and autoantibody examinations, were collected for statistical analysis.Results: In the comparison of thyroid function and autoantibody parameters, the levels of total thyroxine (TT4), thyroid peroxidase antibody (TPO-Ab), and thyroglobulin antibody (TG-Ab) in the GBS group were all higher than those in the CIDP and Control groups (P < 0.01). The thyroid antibody positive rates in the GBS and CIDP groups were 70.10 and 14.10%, respectively (P < 0.01). In the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis, TT4, TPO-Ab, and TG-Ab were higher in the GBS group and lower in the CIDP group (P < 0.01). To achieve a high specificity of 97–99%, the diagnostic cutoff value of TPO-Ab was higher than 133 IU/mL (Sensitivity: 11.34%) or lower than 0.01 IU/mL (Sensitivity: 9.09%), while the diagnostic cutoff value of TG-Ab was higher than 261.1 IU/mL (Sensitivity: 2.06%) or lower than 0.46 IU/mL (Sensitivity: 11.69%). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that the differences in TPO-Ab were statistically significant between GBS patients with TPO-Ab was higher than 133 IU/mL and CIDP patients (P < 0.01); the differences in TG-Ab were statistically significant between GBS patients with TG-Ab was higher than 261.1 IU/mL and CIDP patients (P < 0.05).Conclusion: The elevation of thyroid autoantibodies was associated with GBS. TPO-Ab higher than 133 IU/mL or lower than 0.01 IU/mL and TG-Ab higher than 261.1 IU/mL or lower than 0.46 IU/mL had high specificity for differentiating between GBS and CIDP; therefore, TPO-Ab and TG-Ab can be used as biomarkers for the differential diagnosis of GBS and CIDP.

We aimed to determine the toxic effects of tritiated water (HTO) on 12 generations (T1-T12) of human umbilical vein vascular endothelial cells (HUVECs) and elucidate the underlying mechanisms. We evaluated cellular senescence, interleukin (IL) 8 concentrations, and angiogenesis using β-galactosidase staining, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and in vitro assays, respectively. The adhesion properties of contaminated cells and differentially expressed genes were assessed using the xCELLigence RTCA SP system and gene chip analysis, respectively. We found that long-term exposure to low levels of HTO can reduce the adhesion of HUVECs to the cellular matrix as well as their angiogenic capacity, while increasing their permeability, senescence, and adhesion to monocytes. Interleukin 8 activated the p38 and Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor (EGFR) pathways in HTO-treated cells and hence was identified as a key candidate of biomarker. The present study clarified the toxicity of HTO in vascular endothelial cells and identified IL8 as a novel protective target with important theoretical and practical values.

Modified microspheres (SiO2-M) were obtained by the hydrolytic modification of silicon dioxide (SiO2) microspheres with Na2SiO3, and then, SiO2-M was used as a carrier to prepare a composite photocatalyst (SiO2-M/TiO2) using the sol-gel method; i.e., nano-TiO2 was loaded on the surface of SiO2-M. The structure, morphology, and photocatalytic properties of SiO2-M/TiO2 were investigated. Besides, the mechanism of the effect of SiO2-M was also explored. The results show that the hydrolytic modification of Na2SiO3 coated the surface of SiO2 microspheres with an amorphous SiO2 shell layer and increased the quantity of hydroxyl groups. The photocatalytic performance of the composite photocatalyst was slightly better than that of pure nano-TiO2 and significantly better than that of the composite photocatalyst supported by unmodified SiO2. Thus, increasing the loading capacity of nano-TiO2, improving the dispersion of TiO2, and increasing the active surface sites are essential factors for improving the functional efficiency of nano-TiO2. This work provides a new concept for the design of composite photocatalysts by optimizing the performance of the carrier.

The effects of ionizing radiation on the reproductive system have always been a matter of great interest. Both artificial and naturally occurring ionizing radiation can directly or indirectly affect the reproductive system via the introduction of DNA single-strand and double-strand breaks, the excitation of water molecules, and the generation of free radicals. In order to quantitatively investigate the effects of ionizing radiation on reproductive function, 60 Co γ irradiation was applied on a model organism, Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) . The egg-laying and embryo-hatching activities were observed for the parent (F0) and the first 2 progeny (F1 and F2) generations. The incidence rate of ovipositor malformation was also recorded. Acridine orange was used to detect the number of apoptotic germ cells. With the above metrics, the effects of 60 Co γ irradiation on the reproductive function of C. elegans were systematically evaluated. The results showed that the postirradiation egg-laying and embryo-hatching activities of the F0 generation were increasingly suppressed by increasing doses of 60 Co γ irradiation. Those of the F1 generation showed a trend toward recovery although also suppressed by the radiation to the F0 generation compared with the control. Those activities were restored to normal or near-normal levels for the F2 generation. The incidence rate of ovipositor malformation was greatly increased by 60 Co γ irradiation according to radiation doses. Gamma irradiation by 60 Co also substantially induced germ cell apoptosis, and the apoptosis rate increased with increasing radiation doses. Therefore, 60 Co γ irradiation affects the reproductive function of C. elegans . The suppression on its reproductive function increases with increasing radiation doses. The reproductive functions of progeny generations are also affected and weakened.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of Chahuangjing, a novel traditional Chinese medicinal compound, on decorporation and radiation protection against tritiated water (HTO). Sixty male specific-pathogen-free-grade C57BL/6J mice were randomly divided into 12 groups: mice in 4 control groups were intraperitoneally injected with sterile water; mice in 4 HTO groups were intraperitoneally injected with 11.1 × 10 5 Bq/g of HTO; and mice in the other 4 groups were administered with HTO and a Chahuangjing compound (0.2 mL, once daily). After 1, 7, 14, and 21 days, the mice were killed and samples were collected. A liquid scintillation counting method was used for tritium measurement. A fully automated hematology analyzer was used to assess blood samples. The superoxide dismutase (SOD) and malondialdehyde (MDA) content was analyzed using commercial kits. Chahuangjing significantly increased decorporation and shortened the effective half-life of tritium. To a certain extent, Chahuangjing alleviated the HTO-induced reduction in white blood cells and elevated red blood cells after HTO exposure. Moreover, Chahuangjing alleviated the HTO-induced reduction in SOD activity and reduced MDA. Our study demonstrated that Chahuangjing can enhance the elimination of tritium and reduce free radicals to alleviate HTO-induced radiation injury.

Nowadays, the potential scope of nanotechnology in uro-oncology (cancers of the prostate, bladder, and kidney) is broad, ranging from drug delivery, prevention, and diagnosis to treatment. Novel drug delivery methods using magnetic nanoparticles, gold nanoparticles, and polymeric nanoparticles have been investigated in prostate cancer. Additionally, renal cancer treatment may be profoundly influenced by applications of nanotechnology principles. Various nanoparticle-based strategies for kidney cancer therapy have been proposed. Partly due to the dilution of drug concentrations by urine production, causing inadequate drug delivery to tumor cells in the treatment of bladder cancer, various multifunctional bladder-targeted nanoparticles have been developed to enhance therapeutic efficiency. In each of these cancer research fields, nanotechnology has shown several advantages over widely used traditional methods. Different types of nanoparticles improve the solubility of poorly soluble drugs, and multifunctional nanoparticles have good specificity toward prostate, renal, and bladder cancer. Moreover, nanotechnology can also combine with other novel technologies to further enhance effectivity. As our understanding of nanotechnologies grows, additional opportunities to improve the diagnosis and treatment of urological cancer are excepted to arise. In this review, we focus on nanotechnologies with potential applications in urological cancer therapy and highlight clinical areas that would benefit from nanoparticle therapy.

In this work, we investigated the toxic effects of tritiated water (HTO) on the cardiovascular system. We examined the role of microRNA-34a (miR-34a) in DNA damage and repair in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) exposed to HTO. Cell proliferation capacity was evaluated by cell counting, and miR-34a expression was detected using quantitative PCR (QT-PCR). The Comet assay and γ-H2AX immunostaining were used to measure DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs). Reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction was used to measure the expression level of c-myc messenger RNA (mRNA). The cells exposed to HTO showed significantly lower proliferation than the control cells over 3 days. The DNA damage in the HTO group was more severe than that in the control group, at each time point examined. The expression of miR-34a mimics caused increased DNA DSBs whereas that of the miR-34a inhibitor caused decreased DNA DSBs. The proliferation viability was the opposite for the miR-34a mimics and inhibitor groups. The expression levels of c-myc mRNA in cells transfected with miR-34a mimics were lower than that in cells transfected with the miR-34a-5p inhibitor, at 0.5 hours and 2 hours after transfection. In summary, miR-34a mediates HTO toxicity in HUVECs by downregulating the expression of c-myc.

Confluent and reticulated papillomatosis (CRP) was first described in 1927 by Gougerot and Carteaud. It is characterized by papules that become confluent in the center and reticulated at the periphery. The etiology and pathogenesis of CRP are not precisely known and there is no standard therapy for it. In the recent cases reported, treatment of choice is minocycline. In this report, we present two cases of CRP responding well to Chinese drug, Jianpizhiyang. Some elements in Jianpizhiyang granula were thought to have anti-inflammatory. We expect that, which always has little side-effect, will be a good choice for CRP.
