Nanoparticles are widely used in biomedical applications and cancer treatments due to their minute scale, multi-function, and long retention time. Among the various nanoparticles, the unique optical property derived from the localized surface plasmon resonance effect of metallic nanoparticles is a primary reason that metallic nanoparticles are researched and applied. Copper and Iron nanoparticles have the potential to generate hydroxyl radicals in excess H2O2 via Fenton or Fenton-like reactions. On the other hand, gold nanoparticles equipped with a photosensitizer can transfer the energy of photons to chemical energy and enhance the production of singlet oxygen, which is suitable for cancer treatment. With the actions of these two reactive oxygen species in the tumor microenvironment, cell apoptosis can further be induced.In this work, we first synthesized dual metal nanoparticles with poly[styrene-alt-(maleic acid, sodium salt)( Cu ferrite@PSMA) by a simple one-step hydrothermal reduction reaction. Then, gold(III) was reduced and doped into the structure, which formed a triple metal structure, Au-doped Cu ferrite nanoparticles (Au/Cu ferrite@PSMA NPs). The metal ratio of the product could be controlled by manipulating the Fe/Cu ratio of reactants and the sequence of addition of reactants. The core-shell structure was verified by transmission electron microscopy. Moreover, the hydroxyl radical and singlet oxygen generation ability of Au/Cu ferrite@PSMA was proved. The chemodynamic and photodynamic effect was measured, and the in vitro ROS generation was observed. Furthermore, the behavior of endocytosis by cancer cells could be controlled by the magnetic field. The result indicated that Au/Cu ferrite@PSMA is a potential agent for chemodynamic/photodynamic synergetic therapy.

In order to exploit future soft body armor to achieve a more comprehensive protection than just the torso part of the body, in this study, shear thickening fluids (STFs) with different rheological properties are fabricated by planetary mixer and three-roller mills to investigate the mixing process effect on the resultant rheological behavior. Rheological results indicate the critical shear rate and the maximum viscosity of STF are deeply influenced by the dispersion degree of nano-silica particles in PEG. These STFs are then filled into a paper honeycomb partition to prepare a STF-based protective structure. Different laminating sequences of the composite panels composed one STF structure layer and nineteen layers of Kevlar fabric are obtained by simply placing the STF structure at different positions in the composite panels. The ballistic tests are conducted according to the NIJ 0101.06—Type II standard using 9 mm Full Metal Jacketed Round Nose bullets. Our results show that the absorbed energy of the composite panel with STF that thickens at higher shear rate is higher compared to that using STF that thickens at a lower shear rate. It suggests the STF with higher critical shear rate would be optimally used in ballistic impacts. In addition, ballistic testing results confirm that the STF structure placed at the rear position can significantly contribute to the increase in impact resistance.

During manufacturing, a crucial component of improving production capacity and yield is the selection of an appropriate measurement method. Reducing inspection time improves production capacity and yield. Therefore, optical measurement systems are commonly used in real-time quality monitoring and rapid product inspection. This paper presents theoretical and experimental studies comparing two self-developed optical measurement systems, namely an area scanning system and a line scanning system. The measured object was a cylindrical workpiece with an outside diameter of approximately 200 mm and irregular contours on both the inner and outer side.

SummaryBackgroundsSince December 2019, a novel coronavirus epidemic has emerged in Wuhan city, China and then rapidly spread to other areas. As of 20 Feb 2020, a total of 2,055 medical staff confirmed with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by SARS-Cov-2 in China had been reported. We sought to explore the epidemiological, clinical characteristics and prognosis of novel coronavirus-infected medical staff.MethodsIn this retrospective study, 64 confirmed cases of novel coronavirus-infected medical staff admitted to Union Hospital, Wuhan between 16 Jan, 2020 to 15 Feb, 2020 were included. Two groups concerned were extracted from the subjects based on duration of symptoms: group 1 (≤10 days) and group 2 (>10 days). Epidemiological and clinical data were analyzed and compared across groups. The Kaplan-Meier plot was used to inspect the change in hospital discharge rate. The Cox regression model was utilized to identify factors associated with hospital discharge.FindingsThe median age of medical staff included was 35 years old. 64% were female and 67% were nurses. None had an exposure to Huanan seafood wholesale market or wildlife. A small proportion of the cohort had contact with specimens (5%) as well as patients in fever clinics (8%) and isolation wards (5%). Fever (67%) was the most common symptom, followed by cough (47%) and fatigue (34%). The median time interval between symptoms onset and admission was 8.5 days. On admission, 80% of medical staff showed abnormal IL-6 levels and 34% had lymphocytopenia. Chest CT mainly manifested as bilateral (61%), septal/subpleural (80%) and ground-glass (52%) opacities. During the study period, no patients was transferred to intensive care unit or died, and 34 (53%) had been discharged. Higher body mass index (BMI) (≥ 24 kg/m2) (HR 0.14; 95% CI 0.03-0.73), fever (HR 0.24; 95% CI 0.09-0.60) and higher levels of IL-6 on admission (HR 0.31; 95% CI 0.11-0.87) were unfavorable factors for discharge.InterpretationIn this study, medical staff infected with COVID-19 have relatively milder symptoms and favorable clinical course, which may be partly due to their medical expertise, younger age and less underlying diseases. Smaller BMI, absence of fever symptoms and normal IL-6 levels on admission are favorable for discharge for medical staff. Further studies should be devoted to identifying the exact patterns of SARS-CoV-2 infection among medical staff.

This study compared the ballistic performance of alumina (Al2O3)/ zirconia (ZrO2) functionally graded material (FGM) specimens with various levels of thickness and ZrO2 content and a pure Al2O3 single-layer ceramic composite (PCM). Ballistic tests were conducted with 0.3-inch armor-piercing (AP) projectiles, and finite element code LS-DYNA was used to examine energy absorption, stress distribution, and ceramic cone failure in the specimens. The findings are as follows: First, regarding energy absorption per unit of areal density, the 5% FGMs had the highest ballistic performance, which increased by up to 8%. By contrast, the ballistic performance of the 15% FGMs declined significantly to lower than that of the PCM. Second, the capability of the ceramic cone to withstand stress damage and projectiles was significantly greater in the 5% FGMs than in the 15% FGMs. Third, the wave impedance variations increased with the ZrO2 content in each layer, thereby enhancing the interactions between impact waves and aggravating ceramic damage. Thus, the intensities of transmission and reflection waves in the 15% FGMs increased, thereby causing reductions in its ballistic performance.

Functionally graded materials (FGMs) are characterized by continuous variation in their composition and structure with thickness or volume. Hence, the corresponding changes in the properties and functions of the FGMs can be investigated to create new materials. In this study, four-layered FGM specimens with three different compositions, i.e., Al2O3/(0, 5, 10, 15%) ZrO2, Al2O3/(0, 10, 20, 30%) ZrO2 and Al2O3/(0, 15, 30, 45%) ZrO2, were designed. The ceramic specimens were hexagons whose sides were 11 mm long. Accordingly, 6061-T6 Al was used as a back plate. A ballistic test was conducted using 0.3″ armor-piercing bullets with an initial speed of 868 ± 15 m/s. Numerical simulation software, i.e., LS-DYNA, was employed to analyze stress transfer and the fracture of the FGM specimens under impact. The ballistic test showed that the Al2O3/(0, 5, 10, 15%) ZrO2 FGM exhibited the best impact resistance performance. The investigation of microstructures through observation using a SEM did not show delamination in the FGM interlayer after impact. Furthermore, the abrasion between the ceramic and projectile increased. XRD analysis verified the phase transformation of ZrO2 from the tetragonal phase to the monoclinic phase. This transition delayed crack growth and increased material toughness, thereby promoting the impact resistance performance of the FGMs.

Shear thickening fluids (STFs) have been developed for various applications such as body armor, viscoelastic dampers, and sports equipment. In this paper, the preparation and rheological properties of an STF are discussed. STF/Kevlar composites were made using ethanol as the cosolvent. The physical properties of the composites were determined by ballistic penetration, drop-tower, and yarn pull-out tests. The ballistic penetration was tested at a projectile velocity of 180 m/s. The ballistic penetration tests showed that adding the STF could obviously increase the energy dissipation. In addition, the weight of the composites may be reduced by 37% while their ballistic resistance is maintained. The knife drop-tower tests showed that adding the STF may improve the energy absorption by 20%. The yarn pull-out test demonstrated that the maximum pull-out force of the STF/Kevlar composites is 3.17 times that of neat Kevlar. The enhancements in the physical properties were apparently associated with the addition of the STF.

Orientation-dependent induced-charge electrophoresis (ICEP) behaviors are measured in magnetic metal-coated Janus particles, where the orientation of the particle with respect to the electric field is controlled by an external magnetic field. For a thin metallic coating (10 nm), the particle mainly moves normal to the electric field without the magnetic field. The velocities of ICEP in different directions are measured under the magnetic field and clear orientation-dependent velocities are observed. However, for a thick metallic coating (70 nm), the particle mainly moves parallel to the electric field without the magnetic field and shows an opposite tendency for orientation-dependent velocities compared with the thin metallic coated particles. We propose that the strength of the induced dipole of a Janus particle depends on the thickness of the metallic coating, which results in different orientation-dependent velocities of the Janus particle under electric fields.

Background. Patients suffering from stroke exhibit different levels of capability in retroflex tongues, in our clinical observation. This study aims to derive the association of tongue retroflexibility with the degree of severity for stroke patients.Methods. All ischemic stroke patients were collected from August 2010 to July 2013 in the Stroke Center, Changhua Christian Hospital, Taiwan. All participants underwent medical history collection and clinical examination, including tongue images captured by ATDS. Statistical analysis was performed to compare the differences of ischemic stroke patients with and without retroflex tongue.Result. Among the total of 308 cases collected, 123 patients cannot retroflex their tongues, that is, the non-RT group. The length of stay in the non-RT group, 32.0 ± 21.5, was longer than those of the RT counterparts, 25.9 ± 14.4 (pvalue: 0.007). The NIHSS on admission, 14.1 ± 7.8 versus 8.9 ± 5.2, was higher and the Barthel Index upon admission, 18.6 ± 20.7 and 35.0 ± 24.2, was lower for the non-RT patients than that of the RT counterparts. Also, the non-RT patients account for 60.2% and 75.6% for Barthel Index ≤ 17 and NIHSS ≥ 9, respectively.Conclusion. The stroke patients in non-RT group showed significantly poor prognosis and were more serious in the degree of severity and level of autonomy than RT group, indicating that the ability to maneuver tongue retroflex can serve as a simple, reliable, and noninvasive means for the prognosis of ischemic stroke patients.

In this research, the performance of orthodontic self-drilling correction screw of Titanium alloy (Ti6Al4V) and stainless steel (Stainless 316L) was analyzed by using the finite element method. SolidWorks software was employed to design the 3D models. The dimensions and geometrical parameters of the mini-screw according to ASTM F543-07. The analysis was conducted by using Ansys software. The biomechanical test is carried out that includes the static bending test and the torsion test. Based on the analysis of the results of the tests, the initial stability of the stainless steel screw is slightly higher than the titanium alloy screw. However, in prolonged stress results, attention to interactions with biological organisms from the medical perspective, the titanium bone screw have more advantages. In terms of the maximum load, the titanium alloy screws are better than the stainless steel screws. In terms of stiffness, the stainless steel screws proved superior to the type of titanium alloy. The orthodontic self-drilling correction screw saving of about 30% of the torque and more stable compared to the nonself-drilling type.

Because Al 2 O 3 exhibits high strength and hardness, it is prevalently used as a ceramic material. ZrO 2 is often added to increase the toughness of such a material. Therefore, this study mixed Al 2 O 3 and ZrO 2 to formulate functionally graded materials (FGMs). four-layer and eleven-layer Al 2 O 3 -ZrO 2 FGM S were produced from Al 2 O 3 and ZrO 2 mixtures by sintering at 1500 °C. Moreover, testing sheets were created by mixing various ratios of Al 2 O 3 and ZrO 2 to analyze their fracture toughness and hardness. The results revealed the 90% Al 2 O 3 -10% ZrO 2 sheet to exhibit a hardness of 15.12 GPa, and the 50% Al 2 O 3 -50% ZrO 2 sheet to attain a fracture toughness as high as 4.7 MPa m 0.5 . The impact resistance test involved analyzing various types of testing sheets, including the four-layer Al 2 O 3 -(0%, 10%, 20%, 30%) ZrO 2 FGM, eleven-layer Al 2 O 3 -(0–100%) ZrO 2 FGM, 100% Al 2 O 3 composite material, 90% Al 2 O 3 -10% ZrO 2 composite material, 70% Al 2 O 3 -30% ZrO 2 composite material, and 50% Al 2 O 3 -50% ZrO 2 composite material. The ballistic tests showed that FGMs of the same areal density (4.64 g/cm 2 ) or thickness (11 mm) attained the highest energy absorption. The experimental results confirmed that FGMs can delay the formation and propagation of ceramic cones. Specifically, toughened alumina materials prevent the growth of radial and circumferential cracks, delay the formation of ceramic cones, decrease cones hitting against the back plane, and increase the penetrating resistant capability of the ceramic materials experiencing bullet impact, features important for applications in fields such as aerospace, aviation, automobile, the military industry, and biomedicine

Gradient concept is one of the solutions in advanced material design and structure control. Functionally graded materials (FGMs) are materials which change their composition, constitution or structure continuously along the direction of thickness; the property and function of those materials appear as changeable gradient characteristics. In this research, powder metallurgy method was used to make the functionally graded Al2O3–ZrO2 composite, which was backed with 6061-T6 aluminum alloy plate. For comparing purpose, we also make multilayer Al2O3–ZrO2 composite and pure Al2O3 composite under the same areal density. Based on NIJ IV standard, ballistic test was executed on the three kinds of samples by using 0.30″ armor piercing projectile (AP). Finite element software ANSYS/LS-DYNA was also used to simulate stress distribution and fracture of these composites under impact. It was shown from ballistic test that FGM had the best impact resistant performance. Normally, multilayer ceramic structure will be fractured after impact because of the tensile wave caused by the interlayer. Through SEM observation, delamination was not found in the interlayer of FGM. This phenomenon reduced the tensile wave occurred in the interface between layers and delayed the crack propagation, resulting in a higher ballistic resistance capability structure. High compliance with methadone maintenance therapy (MMT) is crucial to successful opioid abstinence in addicts. However, MMT has numerous side effects, including reductions in quality of life and quality of sleep. Many studies have demonstrated that electroacupuncture relieves withdrawal symptoms in opioid addicts. The present study was a case-control study. From January 2015 to September 2016, 106 patients undergoing MMT at a medical center in central Taiwan were recruited and separated into an electroacupuncture treatment group and a control group. Electroacupuncture was performed for 15 minutes twice weekly for 4 weeks. The electroacupuncture treatment group was discovered to have improved quality of life, especially in terms of vitality and mental health. Although electroacupuncture did not significantly improve sleep quality, we found that sleep quality was significantly improved once methadone dosage had been reduced. Electroacupuncture can improve quality of life in patients undergoing MMT. If methadone dosage can be reduced and electroacupuncture can be employed, both sleep and life quality can be improved.

The metabolism of adenosine (ADO) and nitric oxide (NO) in brain tissues is closely associated with the change of oxygen content. They have contrary effects in the onset of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO)-induced central nervous system oxygen toxicity (CNS OT): ADO can suppress the onset, while NO promotes it. We adopted the ADO-augmenting measure and NO-inhibiting measure in this study and found the combined use had a far superior preventive and therapeutic effect in protecting against CNS OT compared with the use of either measure alone. So we hypothesized that there is an interaction between ADO and NO which has an important impact on the onset of CNS OT. On this basis, we administered ADO-augmenting or ADO-inhibiting drugs to rats. After exposure to HBO, the onset of CNS OT was evaluated, followed by the measurement of NO content in brain tissues. In another experiment, rats were administered NO-augmenting or NO-inhibiting drugs. After exposure to HBO, the onset of CNS OT was evaluated, followed by measurement of the activities of ADO metabolism-related enzymes in brain tissues. The results showed that, following ADO augmentation, the content of NO and its metabolite was significantly reduced, and the onset of CNS OT significantly improved. After ADO inhibition, just the opposite was observed. NO promotion resulted in a decrease in the activity of ADO-producing enzyme, an increase in the activity of ADO-decomposing enzyme, and an aggravation in CNS OT. The above results were all reversed after an inhibition in NO content. Studies have shown that exposure to HBO has a significant impact on the content of ADO and NO in brain tissues as well as their biological effects, and ADO and NO might have an intense interaction, which might generate an important effect on the onset of CNS OT. The prophylaxis and treatment effects of CNS OT can be greatly enhanced by augmenting ADO and inhibiting NO.

To investigate the genetic status of Astragalus membranaceuse resources in Gansu province.Using SSR molecular marker technology for collection of Astragalus membranaceuse resources for genetic diversity analysis and clustering analysis.Nine SSR primers were used on PCR amplification of 57 samples in six main areas of Gansu province,PCR products molecular weighted between 100 ~ 500 bp,the polymorphic loci was 82,the polymorphism rate was 97. 56%,and the average polymorphism information content was 0. 438. At the species level,the number of alleles was 1. 976,the effective number of alleles was 1. 459,Nei’ s genetic diversity was 0. 279,Shannon information index was 0. 431,the group of genetic diversity degree was 0. 248,the genetic differentiation among of population was 0. 117,the gene flow coefficient was 3. 775,and the genetic identity was 0. 896 ~ 0. 977.Astragalus membranaceuse resources of Gansu are relatively pure,and have abundant genetic diversity. The genetic variation mainly comes from the group of inside,the genes communication between populations is frequent,and the kinship between population is consistent with their geographic distance. In addition,the results of cluster analysis showed that the Core SSR primers can distinguish Astragalus and Hedysarum in the similarity of 0. 46,but Astragalus membranaceus var. mongholicus,Astragalus membranaceus and Astragalus tongolensis can’t be distinguished.

Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) has been used widely in many underwater missions and clinical work. However, exposure to extremely high oxygen pressure may cause central nervous system oxygen toxicity (CNS-OT). The regulation of astrocyte glutamate metabolism is closely related to epilepsy. This study aimed to observe the effects of HBO exposure on glutamate metabolism in astrocytes and confirm the role of glutamate metabolism in CNS-OT. Anesthetized rats were exposed to 5 atmosphere absolute HBO for 80 min and microdialysis samples of brain interstitial fluid were continuously collected. Extracellular glutamate and glutamine concentrations were also detected. Freely moving rats were exposed to HBO of the same pressure for 20 min and glutamine synthetase (GS) activity in brain tissues was measured. Finally, we observed the effects of different doses of drugs related to glutamate metabolism on the latency of CNS-OT. Results showed that HBO exposure significantly increased glutamate content, whereas glutamine content was significantly reduced. Moreover, HBO exposure significantly reduced GS activity. Glutamate transporter-1 (GLT-1) selective antagonist ceftriaxone prolonged CNS-OT latency, whereas GLT-1 selective inhibitor dihydrokainate shortened CNS-OT latency. In summary, HBO exposure improved glutamate concentration and reduced glutamine concentration by inhibition of GS activity. GLT-1 activation also participated in the prevention of HBO-induced CNS-OT. Our research will provide a potential new target to terminate or attenuate CNS-OT.

The motion of a laser-heated Janus particle is experimentally measured under a rotating electric field. Directionally circular motions of the Janus particle following or countering the direction of the rotating electric field are observed in the low-frequency region (from 1 to 6 kHz) depending on the direction of electrorotation. In the higher frequency region (>10 kHz), only pure electrorotation and electrothermal flow are observed. By measuring the dependence of the frequency, voltage, and laser heating power, we propose that the tangential component of circular motion is caused by electric field enhanced self-thermophoresis, which is proportional to the laser heating power and the electric field. This result indicates that thermophoresis could be modified by the induced zeta potential of the Janus particle tuned by the applied electric fields. By this mechanism, the intrinsic thermophoresis can be enhanced several times at a relatively low applied voltage (~3 Volt). Electrically tunable thermophoresis of a particle may bring new insights to thermophoresis phenomenon and also open a new direction for tunable active materials.

This article provides a simple method to prepare partially or fully coated metallic particles and to perform the rapid fabrication of electrode arrays, which can facilitate electrical experiments in microfluidic devices. Janus particles are asymmetric particles that contain two different surface properties on their two sides. To prepare Janus particles, a monolayer of silica particles is prepared by a drying process. Gold (Au) is deposited on one side of each particle using a sputtering device. The fully coated metallic particles are completed after the second coating process. To analyze the electrical surface properties of Janus particles, alternating current (AC) electrokinetic measurements, such as dielectrophoresis (DEP) and electrorotation (EROT)- which require specifically designed electrode arrays in the experimental device- are performed. However, traditional methods to fabricate electrode arrays, such as the photolithographic technique, require a series of complicated procedures. Here, we introduce a flexible method to fabricate a designed electrode array. An indium tin oxide (ITO) glass is patterned by a fiber laser marking machine (1,064 nm, 20 W, 90 to 120 ns pulse-width, and 20 to 80 kHz pulse repetition frequency) to create a four-phase electrode array. To generate the four-phase electric field, the electrodes are connected to a 2-channel function generator and to two invertors. The phase shift between the adjacent electrodes is set at either 90° (for EROT) or 180° (for DEP). Representative results of AC electrokinetic measurements with a four-phase ITO electrode array are presented.

A method for fabricating a microlens array composite optical film by a seamless roller mold of self-assembly is presented. The roller with a lot of random cavities is used to produce a polyethylene terephthalate (PET) composite optical film with 3D random microlens arrays using the ultraviolet (UV) roll-to-roll printing. The luminance gain and haze are 1.247 and 86 %, respectively, giving the PET composite optical film the properties of a brightness enhancement film and a diffuser. Solid glass beads (SBs) are used for parameter testing for self-assembly. Then, 3 M glass bubble beads (BBs) are used to fabricate a seamless roller mold. The optimal parameters of the self-assembly process for the SB are a coating speed of 135 mm/h with a 39 % volume ratio, and those for the BB are a coating speed of 30 mm/h with a 3 % volume ratio. Finally, the PET optical film is used in the green energy lighting testing of a commercial bicycle light-emitting diode (LED). The results show increased lighting angle and light uniformity, making it similar to traditional tungsten light.

In this paper, it uses continuous wavelet transform in analysing zhuji station monthly rainfall. from the transformed wavelet coefficients’ real component, variance and modulus square, we can get the main measure contained in zhuji’s monthly rainfall sequence. By anlysing the transformation process of continuous wavelet transform coefficien’s real part of various scales, we can get zhuji station’s monthly rainfall sequence wet-dry transformation process of various scales. By caculated , we found zhuji station’s monthly rainfall sequence contains 10 month , 171 month and 393 month scale. In large scales, zhuji station’s rainfall is in hemiplegia period from 2013 to 2021. in small scale, zhuji station’s rainfall shifts strongly.

This paper presents the analysis of smart hybrid composite plate with embedded shape memory alloy (SMA) wires subjected to low-velocity impact. The SMA wires were embedded within the layers of the composite laminates and the numerical calculation was used in the impact analyses of the laminated hybrid composite plate. The laminated plate theory, first-order shear deformation theory and minimal potential energy principle was utilized to solve the governing equations of the hybrid composite plate analytically. Energy absorption of hybrid composites can be successfully analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA). The results indicated that temperature effect is significant during the transition phase and SMA can effectively improve impact-resistance of the hybrid composite laminated plate. In addition, this hybrid structure is an advanced design concepts that can strengthen the impact resistance capability and enhance the carrying loading efficiency of the structure.
