Background: Viral bronchiolitis presents a heterogeneous spectrum. In this study, we investigated the clinical characteristics and the cytokines/chemokines profiles among respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), rhinovirus (RV), and their dual infection in Taiwanese children with viral bronchiolitis. Method: This study was conducted between October 2014 and June 2017. Viral etiology was identified using a Luminex respiratory virus panel and blood cytokines were evaluated using a MILLIPLEX MAP Human Cytokine/Chemokine Panel. Cytokine/Chemokine expressions were compared by clinical severity, steroid treatment, and viral entities. Results: A total of 184 patients were evaluated; at least one respiratory virus was identified in 163 (88.6%) patients. RSV and RV were the two leading viral etiologies, with 25.5% and 17.3%, respectively. RV bronchiolitis has a comparable severity to RSV but is more common in children of an older age with a history of recurrent wheezing and blood eosinophilia. Decreased tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and interferon gamma (INF-γ) levels were correlated with clinical severity. Abstract Background Bacterial wilt (BW), caused by Ralstonia solanacearum (Rs), is one of the most destructive diseases impacting a wide range of crops globally. The infection process is complex involving intricate interactions between the plant and Rs. Managing BW is challenging, and crop breeding remains the most effective strategy for disease control. Resistance to BW in crops is primarily associated with quantitative trait loci (QTLs), which are believed to correlate with the simultaneous activation of multiple defense mechanisms against pathogens. This study aimed to clarify the nature of BW resistance and determine whether pattern-triggered immunity (PTI) plays a role in this resistance. Results PTI can be triggered in tomato roots and stembases by an Rs hrpG − mutant and by the cell wall extract (PiCWE) from the root-infected beneficial fungus Piriformospora indica (Pi). Among tomato plants with varying resistance levels to Rs, BW-resistant (BWR) and moderate-resistant (BWMR) cultivars exhibited higher levels of root and stembase PTI in response to Rs hrpG − inoculation and PiCWE treatment than in BW-susceptible (BWS) cultivars. Additionally, BWR and BWMR cultivars showed enhanced leaf PTI after inoculation with a Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato (Pst) hrcC − mutant. The BWR cultivar Hawaii 7996 (H7996) also demonstrated high tolerance to several leaf pathogens. Conclusions Efficient systems for the analyses of PTI responses in tomato roots, stembases and leaves in response to patterns derived from root-infected pathogenic and beneficial microorganisms have been established. The levels of PTI in roots, stembases, and leaves are positively correlated with BW resistance in tomato plants. The BWR cultivar H7996 also shows tolerance to various leaf pathogens. This study reveals a significant correlation between tomato PTI and resistance to Rs, provides valuable insights into the nature of BW resistance, and offers critical information for tomato breeding.

Background: This study was conducted to identify risk factors for distant interval metastases (IM) in patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) who underwent chemoradiotherapy (CRT). Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the clinical records of 358 patients with ESCC treated with CRT between 2006 and 2017. Distant IM were defined as systemic metastases developing during or shortly after CRT and identified during the restaging work-up period. A risk prediction nomogram for distant IM was developed based on independent pretreatment risk factors identified using multivariable logistic regression analysis. Results: Distant IM occurred in 26 (7.3%) patients and had a significant adverse impact on survival (median survival: 8.7 months). The most common site of distant IM was the lung (n = 9), followed by non-regional lymph nodes (n = 8) and the bone (n = 8). Multivariable logistic regression analysis revealed that high baseline tumor SUVmax values were independently associated with an increased risk of distant IM (odds ratio [OR] = 1.059, p = 0.019), whereas older age was an independent protective factor (OR = 0.946, p = 0.032). A nomogram based on age, tumor SUVmax, tumor length, and the chemotherapy regimen showed a good predictive performance (c-statistic = 0.761), which was internally validated using 200 bias-corrected bootstrap replicates (c-statistic = 0.71). Conclusion: Distant IM were identified in 7.3% of patients with ESCC undergoing CRT. The nomogram described in our study may prove useful to predict the risk of distant IM in this patient group.

Background: Cervical lymphadenopathy is among the cardinal manifestations of Kikuchi disease (KD). The incidences and locations of extra-cervical lymph nodes (LNs) involvement in KD have not been comprehensively reported. Methods: From 2003 to 2016, 60 patients with pathologically confirmed KD and with computed tomography and/or whole-body inflammation scans at diagnosis were retrospectively identified. The locations, sizes and characteristics of all affected LNs were analyzed by extensive review of the image studies. The clinical and laboratory parameters were abstracted from medical records and the associations with extra-cervical LNs involvement were identified. Results: Female accounted for 35 (58.3%) patients and the median age of all patients was 21.3 years (ranges, 3–64 years). Of 59 patients with evaluable neck images, 42 (71.2%) and 16 (27.1%) patients presented with unilateral and bilateral nodal involvement, respectively, with the most common locations at level II, III and IV by Som's classification. The largest LNs appeared most commonly in level II. The incidences of extra-cervical lymphadenopathy in abdomen, pelvis, inguina, axilla and mediastinum with available images were respectively 52.9% (9/17), 47.1% (8/17), 41.2% (7/17), 30.6% (11/36) and 14.3% (8/56). When compared to cases with solitary cervical lymphadenopathy, the cases with extra-cervical lymphadenopathy had significantly greater incidences of bilateral cervical lymphadenopathy (P = .0379) and leukopenia (P = .0173). Conclusion: Unilateral cervical lymphadenopathy was the most frequent form of LNs involvement of KD. Extra-cervical lymphadenopathy was not uncommon and was associated with the appearance of bilateral distribution of cervical LNs and leukopenia.

Abstract Background Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) provide a powerful means to identify associations between genetic variants and phenotypes. However, GWAS techniques for detecting epistasis, the interactions between genetic variants associated with phenotypes, are still limited. We believe that developing an efficient and effective GWAS method to detect epistasis will be a key for discovering sophisticated pathogenesis, which is especially important for complex diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Results In this regard, this study presents GenEpi, a computational package to uncover epistasis associated with phenotypes by the proposed machine learning approach. GenEpi identifies both within-gene and cross-gene epistasis through a two-stage modeling workflow. In both stages, GenEpi adopts two-element combinatorial encoding when producing features and constructs the prediction models by L1-regularized regression with stability selection. The simulated data showed that GenEpi outperforms other widely-used methods on detecting the ground-truth epistasis. As real data is concerned, this study uses AD as an example to reveal the capability of GenEpi in finding disease-related variants and variant interactions that show both biological meanings and predictive power. Conclusions The results on simulation data and AD demonstrated that GenEpi has the ability to detect the epistasis associated with phenotypes effectively and efficiently. The released package can be generalized to largely facilitate the studies of many complex diseases in the near future.

A wealth of evidence has shown that a single bout of aerobic exercise can facilitate executive function. However, none of current studies on this topic have addressed whether the magnitude of the acute-exercise benefit on executive function and oculomotor performance is influenced by different aerobic exercise modes. The present study was thus aimed toward an investigation of the acute effects of high-intensity interval exercise (HIIE) vs. moderate-intensity continuous exercise (MICE) on executive-related oculomotor performance in healthy late middle-aged and older adults. Using a within-subject design, twenty-two participants completed a single bout of 30 min of HIIE, MICE, or a non-exercise-intervention (REST) session in a counterbalanced order. The behavioral [e.g., reaction times (RTs), coefficient of variation (CV) of the RT], and oculomotor (e.g., saccade amplitude, saccade latency, and saccadic peak velocity) indices were measured when participants performed antisaccade and prosaccade tasks prior to and after an intervention mode. The results showed that a 30-min single-bout of HIIE and MICE interventions shortened the RTs in the antisaccade task, with the null effect on the CV of the RT in the late middle-aged and older adults. In terms of oculomotor metrics, although the two exercise modes could not modify the performance in terms of saccade amplitudes and saccade latencies, the participants’ saccadic peak velocities while performing the oculomotor paradigm were significantly altered only following an acute HIIE intervention. The present findings suggested that a 30-min single-bout of HIIE and MICE interventions modulated post-exercise antisaccade control on behavioral performance (e.g., RTs). Nevertheless, the HIIE relative MICE mode appears to be a more effective aerobic exercise in terms of oculomotor control (e.g., saccadic peak velocities) in late middle-aged and older adults.

Background/purpose: To investigate the diagnostic accuracy of 68Ga-DOTATOC and 18F-FDG PET/CT to identify the primary foci in Taiwanese patients with clinically suspected neuroendocrine tumors (NET) and NET of unknown primary site. Methods: Patients with clinically suspected NET and NET of unknown primary site were eligible. All participants underwent a conventional workup (including CT, MR, endoscopic ultrasound), 68Ga-DOTATOC, and 18F-FDG PET/CT. The results of pathology and findings on clinical follow-up served as the gold standard. Results: Among the 36 patients included in the study, we were able to identify the primary tumor in 17 participants (47.2%). The overall sensitivity values of 68Ga-DOTATOC, 18F-FDG, and conventional workup were 88%, 41%, and 53%, respectively, whereas the specificities were 100%, 100%, 68%, respectively. The areas under curve of 68Ga-DOTATOC, 18F-FDG, and conventional workup were 0.941, 0.706, and 0.607, respectively. 68Ga-DOTATOC was more sensitive than 18F-FDG and more specific than conventional workup. Treatment changes as a result of 68Ga-DOTATOC PET/CT findings occurred in 12 (33.3%) of the 36 study participants. Conclusion: Our data confirm the usefulness of 68Ga-DOTATOC in the identification of NET. In addition, treatment modifications as a result of 68Ga-DOTATOC PET/CT findings were evident in approximately one third of NET patients. Pyrrhotite nanoparticles with 5C and 3C superstructures were synthesized via a simple one-step thermal decomposition method in which hexadecylamine was used as a solvent at various reaction temperatures (TR). Structural analysis showed that at TR = 360 °C, almost uniform in size and shape Fe7S8 nanoparticles with 3C superstructure are formed, and an increase in the reaction temperature leads to the formation of Fe9S10 nanoparticles (5C superstructure), herewith a significant increase in the size of nanoparticles is observed. High-temperature magnetic measurements in 5 repeated heating-cooling cycles revealed that after the first heating branch in the Fe9S10 samples, the λ—Peak transition disappears, and the magnetization has a Weiss-type behavior characteristic of the Fe7S8 sample. The change in the behavior of magnetization can be explained by the redistribution of iron vacancies, which changes the initial phase composition of nanoparticles.

Magnetite nanoparticles were synthesized by a simple thermal decomposition process, involving only iron (III) nitrate nonahydrate as a precursor, and hexadecylamine as a solvent and stabilizer at reaction temperatures varied from 200 to 380 °C. The results of the structural analysis showed that the average crystallite size depends on the reaction temperature and increases from 4.8 to 13.3 nm. The behavior of the coercivity indicates that all synthesized samples are single domain; herewith, it was found that the critical size corresponding to the transition to the superparamagnetic state at room temperature is about 9 nm. The effect of the reaction temperature on changes in the saturation magnetization was studied. It was found that the size effect in the MCD spectra is observed for the IVCT transition and one ISCT transition, and the influence of the reaction temperature on the change in the MCD spectra was discussed.
