1. Measuring the Competitive Pressure of Academic Journals and the Competitive Intensity within Subjects

Abstract

A journal's impact and similarity with rivals is closely related to its competitive intensity. A subject area can be considered as an ecological system of journals, and can then be measured using the competitive intensity concept from plant systems. Based on Journal Citation Reports data from 1997, 2000, 2005, 2010, and 2013, we calculated the mutual citation, cosine similarity, and competitive relationship matrices for mycology journals. We derived the mutual citation network for mycology according to Journal Citation Reports data from 2013. We calculated each journal's competitive pressure, and the competitive intensity for the subject. We found that competitive pressures are very variable among journals. Differences between a journal's absolute and relative influence are related to the competitive pressure. A more powerful journal has lower competitive pressure. New journals have more competitive pressure. If there are no other influences, the competition intensity of a subject will continue to increase. Furthermore, we found that if a subject has more journals, its competitive intensity decreases., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

Journal citation measures are one of the most widely used bibliometric tools. The most well-known measure is the ISI Impact Factor, under the standard definition, the impact factor of journal j in a given year is the average number of citations received by papers published in the previous two years of journal j. However, the impact factor has its “intrinsic” limitations, it is a ranking measure based fundamentally on a pure counting of the in-degrees of nodes in the network, and its calculation does not take into account the “impact” or “prestige” of the journals in which the citations appear. Google’s PageRank algorithm and Kleinberg’s HITS method are webpage ranking algorithm, they compute the scores of webpages based on a combination of the number of hyperlinks that point to the page and the status of pages that the hyperlinks originate from, a page is important if it is pointed to by other important pages. We demonstrate how popular webpage algorithm PageRank and HITS can be used ranking journal, and we compared ISI impact factor, PageRank and HITS for journal ranking, and with PageRank and HITS compute respectively including self-citation and non self-citation, and discussed the merit and shortcomings and the scope of application that the various algorithms are used to rank journal.

Cet article présente l'état actuel de la constitution de la base, la multiplicité des besoins des chercheurs ainsi que la tendance en matière de conception de bases dans d'autres pays et l'analyse de certains problèmes rencontrés aujourd'hui en Chine. Theses and dissertations are valuable resources for researchers and the ETD format provides a good way to make them more useful. Government and libraries play an important role in the building of Chinese ETD database. This article introduces the present status of ETD database construction in China and the diversification of researchers' needs, as well as the trend of ETD database building in other countries and the analysis of some problem now in China .
