6. Defect Engineering of Ultrasmall TiO2Nanoparticles Enables Highly Efficient Photocatalysts for Solar H2Production from Woody Biomass

Abstract

The conversion of woody biomass to H2through photocatalysis provides a sustainable strategy to generate renewable hydrogen fuel but was limited by the slow decomposition rate of woody biomass. Here, we fabricate ultrasmall TiO2nanoparticles with tunable concentration of oxygen vacancy defects (VO-TiO2) as highly efficient photocatalysts for photocatalytic conversion of woody biomass to H2. Owing to the positive role of oxygen vacancy in reducing energy barrier for the generation of •OH which was the critical species to oxidize woody biomass, the obtained VO-TiO2achieves rapid photocatalytic conversion of α-cellulose and poplar wood chip to H2in the presence of Pt nanoclusters as the cocatalyst. As expected, the highest H2generation rate in α-cellulose and poplar wood chip system respectively achieve 1146 and 59 μmol h–1g–1, and an apparent quantum yield of 4.89% at 380 nm was obtained in α-cellulose aqueous solution.

Abstract

Background: To review the changes and survey on status quo of the surgical treatment for esophageal cancer in China. The differences in diagnosis and treatment for esophageal cancer among hospitals in different regions across China were also investigated. Methods: We sent questionnaires to 46 hospitals across China, investigating the volume of esophageal cancer surgeries, surgical procedures, and perioperative management under the guidance of esophageal surgery chiefs. Results: A total of 46 questionnaires were sent out and collected. The survey results showed that in the past 5 years, the volume of surgeries for esophageal cancer remained stable by 23.9% of those hospitals, increased by 30.4%, and decreased by 45.7%. Of those patients treated by surgery, 19.1% were in the early stages, and 80.9% were in locally advanced stages. In terms of surgical procedures, 73.4% of the patients were treated by minimally invasive surgery and 85.7% of esophageal substitutes were a gastric conduit, 93.1% of the substitutes were pulled to the neck through the esophageal bed. For the lymph node dissection, 78.5% of the patients had a complete two‐field lymph node dissection including the para‐recurrent laryngeal nerve lymph nodes. Of the patients with neoadjuvant therapy, 53.5% received chemotherapy or chemotherapy plus immunotherapy (47.0%), and 43.5% had chemoradiation. Conclusions: Currently, in China, minimally invasive surgery‐oriented multimodality treatment, including complete two‐field lymph node dissection, has become the standard approach for esophageal cancer management. 13. Structural, mechanical and electronic properties of precipitates in Mg−Zn alloys

Abstract

To accelerate the development and design of magnesium (Mg) alloys, the structural and mechanical properties of important precipitates in Mg−Zn alloys were studied by experiments and density functional theory. The nano-indentation tests revealed that the hardness of the precipitates initially increased and then decreased with increasing Zn content, and was significantly higher than that of pure Mg and Zn. The calculation results revealed that the precipitates stability initially increased and then decreased with increasing Zn concentration. The bulk moduli of the precipitates increased, whereas their shear and Young’s moduli initially increased and then decreased with increasing Zn content. The decreasing order of ductility for these compounds is MgZn2> Mg21Zn25> Mg2Zn11> Mg4Zn7. The surface profiles of the compounds revealed that they are obvious anisotropy. Both the degree of covalency and bond length of covalent bonds initially increased and then decreased with increasing Zn content.

Abstract

The isothermal constant strain rate compression tests of Ti-5.5Mo-6V-7Cr-4Al-2Sn-1Fe alloy were conducted by Gleeble-3800 simulator. The hot deformation temperature range is from 655℃ to 855℃ and the strain rate range is from 0.001s-1 to 10s-1 and the maximum true strain is 0.8. A high temperature flow stress model was built with activation energy of 255kJ/mol according to the experimental results for the alloy and the processing map of alloy was constructed according to DMM model. The metallographic analysis of alloy shows that the alloy exhibits domain of flow localization and adiabatic shear bands and low power dissipation efficiency in the high strain rate(1-10s-1). The alloy undergoes dynamic recovery in the temperature region of 655-755℃ and the strain rate below 0.01s-1. The dynamic recrystallization takes place at the strain rate below 0.01s-1 and in the temperature region of 755-855℃, the original deformed grains and recrystallized grains gradually grow with the increase of temperature. When the temperature is 755-770℃ and the strain rate is 0.001-0.003s-1, the alloy's power dissipation efficiency reaches the maximum and the recrystallized grain is uniform and fine. These regions can be considered as the optimal parameter range of isothermal compression for the alloy.

Abstract

Lessons Learned Patient compliance with the oral dosage treatment was good, with no need for hospitalization. Patients with tracheal and esophageal fistulas can take crushed apatinib by nutrient tube, with the same bioavailability and efficacy. Apatinib may be an effective and safe second- or further-line treatment for advanced esophageal cancer. Background Apatinib is an inhibitor of vascular endothelial growth factor receptor-2 (VEGFR2), which is thought to play a role in esophageal cancer progression. Our goal was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of apatinib in patients with unresectable esophageal cancer and to examine whether VEGFR2 expression influenced the clinical response. Methods This single-arm, open-label, investigator-initiated phase II study enrolled patients with advanced squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) or adenocarcinoma of the esophagus or esophagogastric junction who were admitted to Tianjin Medical University Cancer Institute and Hospital between August 2017 and January 2019. Apatinib monotherapy (500 mg/day) was given orally or via an enteral tube until disease progression, unacceptable toxicity, withdrawal, or death. Patients were followed until treatment was discontinued or death. The main endpoints were tumor response, progression-free survival (PFS), overall survival (OS), and adverse events (AEs). Results Among 32 patients screened for inclusion, 30 were included in the safety and survival analyses (i.e., received apatinib), and 26 were included in the efficacy analysis (at least one imaging follow-up). Median follow-up time and exposure to apatinib were 5.34 months and 72 days, respectively. Among 26 patients included in the efficacy analysis, 2 had a partial response (PR; 7.7%) and 14 had stable disease (SD; 53.8%). The overall response rate (ORR) was 7.7%, and the disease control rate (DCR) was 61.5%. Median PFS and OS were 4.63 months (95% confidence interval, 2.11–7.16 months) and 6.57 months (4.90 months to not estimable), respectively. Fifteen patients (50.0%) experienced treatment-related AEs, most commonly hypertension (26.7%), diarrhea (20.0%), and hand-foot-skin reaction (10.0%). No patients had grade ≥4 treatment-related AEs. Conclusion Apatinib was effective as second- or further-line treatment for advanced esophageal cancer.

Abstract

Enhancing the separation and transfer of photogenerated carriers is critical factor for increasing the light to chemical energy conversion efficiencies. Here, we exposed {001} and {010} facets on [100] oriented Ta3N5 cuboid, creating 18.6 times enhancement in photocatalytic reduction of CO2 to CH4 and a 0.42 VRHE (reference to reversible hydrogen electrode) photocurrent onset potential for photoelectrochemical water splitting. The pronounced photocatalytic performance is mainly attributed to that surface electric field from large surface band bending of the {001} with high work function drives electrons and holes to {010} and {001}, respectively, achieving a spatial charge separation. Differing to a main effect in charge separation and transfer for the traditional junction electric field region at buried heterjunction or homojunction interface, a surface electric field region is a place where charges separate and transfer efficiently and also the place for the catalytic reactions to occur.

47. Effect of MAO/Ta2O5composite coating on the corrosion behavior of Mg–Sr alloy and its in vitrobiocompatibility

Abstract

In this study, on the surface of Mg–Sr alloy, we prepared two layer coatings, Ta2O5on the primary MAO (Micro-arc oxidation) coating, and finally obtain a MAO/Ta2O5composite coating by a sol–gel method. The surface morphology, chemical composition and microstructure of coated and uncoated Mg–Sr alloy were characterized by SEM, EDS, XPS and XRD. The corrosion resistance of all samples was evaluated by electrochemical and hydrogen evolution tests. Its biocompatibility was tested by in vitro cell assay. It was found that the MAO/Ta2O5composite coated Mg–Sr alloy presented good corrosion resistance, the corrosion current density of decreased from 2.3 × 10−5A/cm2of MAO coating to 1.6 × 10−6A/cm2of MAO/Ta2O5composite coating in simulated body fluid because the micropores and microcracks in the MAO coating were perfectly sealed by the subsequent Ta2O5layer. These results showed that MAO/Ta2O5composite coating had better biocompatibility than the substrate and the MAO coating. This study might provide a coating strategy to improve the corrosion resistance and biocompatibility for the Mg–Sr alloy in biological restoration applications.
