Two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) numerical models are commonly employed to investigate the kinematic and hydrodynamic characteristics of fish maneuvers. In this study, we captured the posture characteristics of zebrafish during C-type maneuvers using high-speed photography and constructed a midline curvature model via the tandem principal characteristics method, which exhibited a "double peak and single valley" structure. Based on this curvature model, self-propelled simulations were conducted using the immersed boundary method with adaptive mesh refinement. The results showed that, under identical deformation conditions, the 2D simulation exhibited a 16.8% higher centroid velocity, 6.1% greater overall angular velocity, and an 11.9% larger turning angle compared to the 3D simulation. This discrepancy is primarily due to the 2D model's inability to accurately represent the fish body's mass distribution and force characteristics, resulting in artificially elevated performance. Nevertheless, 2D simulations remain applicable for studying the propulsion performance of fish with elongated cross-sections and large fin areas. Comparison between the simulated and real motion performance reveals that, under the self-propelled computational model, both 2D and 3D numerical simulations consistently capture the qualitative motion patterns. Fish are capable of maintaining a stable forward direction without yawing during long-distance movements. This long-term yaw stability has been investigated using static derivatives, revealing that undulatory locomotion is highly unstable. However, the present simulation of the perturbation development process shows that the yaw perturbation growth rate of the undulatory fish is an order of magnitude smaller than that of non-undulatory one. This study investigates the yaw stability of two-dimensional fish body undergoing the carangiform undulatory deformation by considering both the mean static and dynamic derivatives method. The results indicate that the yaw instability always occurs when the fish body is in undulatory propulsion or coasting model, and the undulation has stabilizing effect compared with the body straight in the uniform incoming flow. Analysis of the mean derivatives reveals that the stabilizing effect is due to the negative value of the dynamic derivative, which plays the role of damping, although the static derivative indicates that the yaw is unstable. Utilizing mean derivatives method can analyze qualitatively the linear stability at the equilibrium point, which cannot provide an assessment of overall stability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Key message: Compared with NaCl, NaHCO3 caused more serious oxidative damage and photosynthesis inhibition in safflower by down-regulating the expression of related genes. Salt-alkali stress is one of the important factors that limit plant growth. NaCl and sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) are neutral and alkaline salts, respectively. This study investigated the physiological characteristics and molecular responses of safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) leaves treated with 200 mmol L−1 of NaCl or NaHCO3. The plants treated with NaCl treatment were less effective at inhibiting the growth of safflower, but increased the content of malondialdehyde (MDA) in leaves. Meanwhile, safflower alleviated stress damage by increasing proline (Pro), soluble protein (SP), and soluble sugar (SS). Both fresh weight and dry weight of safflower was severely decreased when it was subjected to NaHCO3 stress, and there was a significant increase in the permeability of cell membranes and the contents of osmotic regulatory substances. An enrichment analysis of the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) using Gene Ontology and the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes identified significant enrichment of photosynthesis and pathways related to oxidative stress. Furthermore, a weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) showed that the darkgreen module had the highest correlation with photosynthesis and oxidative stress traits. Large numbers of transcription factors, primarily from the MYB, GRAS, WRKY, and C2H2 families, were predicted from the genes within the darkgreen module. An analysis of physiological indicators and DEGs, it was found that under saline-alkali stress, genes related to chlorophyll synthesis enzymes were downregulated, while those related to degradation were upregulated, resulting in inhibited chlorophyll biosynthesis and decreased chlorophyll content. Additionally, NaCl and NaHCO3 stress downregulated the expression of genes related to the Calvin cycle, photosynthetic antenna proteins, and the activity of photosynthetic reaction centers to varying degrees, hindering the photosynthetic electron transfer process, suppressing photosynthesis, with NaHCO3 stress causing more pronounced adverse effects. In terms of oxidative stress, the level of reactive oxygen species (ROS) did not change significantly under the NaCl treatment, but the contents of hydrogen peroxide and the rate of production of superoxide anions increased significantly under NaHCO3 stress. In addition, treatment with NaCl upregulated the levels of expression of the key genes for superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POD), the ascorbate-glutathione cycle, and the thioredoxin-peroxiredoxin pathway, and increased the activity of these enzymes, thus, reducing oxidative damage. Similarly, NaHCO3 stress increased the activities of SOD, CAT, and POD and the content of ascorbic acid and initiated the glutathione-S-transferase pathway to remove excess ROS but suppressed the regeneration of glutathione and the activity of peroxiredoxin. Overall, both neutral and alkaline salts inhibited the photosynthetic process of safflower, although alkaline salt caused a higher level of stress than neutral salt. In this research, the effect of high-density polyethylene active packaging (HDPAP) bottles containing Coriandrum sativum essential oil (CSEO) on the oxidation stability and sensory attributes of sunflower oil (SFO) during the accelerated storage was investigated. The migration test showed that the CSEO could migrate from the package to SFO. In the accelerated storage procedure at 65°C, the increase in the levels of acid value (AV), peroxide value (PV), p-anisidine value (AnV), thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), conjugated dienes (K232) and conjugated trienes (K268) of SFO samples was significantly inhibited after the sunflower oil packaged by the HAPAP containing CSEO at 6000 ppm (p <.05), which showed that the HDPAP bottle containing CSEO could delay the oxidation of SFO. Therefore, the results demonstrated that employment of HDPAP bottles containing CSEO at 6000 ppm could be applied as a good replacement for the direct addition of synthetic antioxidants to the SFO. Molecular imprinted polymers (MIP) have recently drawn much attention as highly selective solid-phase materials for handling and isolation of organic pollutants in complex matrices. Because of the impaired retention capacity for target species as compared with reversed-phase materials and irreversible sorption of interfering compounds by nonspecific interactions, the implementation of MIPbased solid-phase reactors as permanent components in automatic flow-systems has not received widespread acceptance as of yet. To tackle this limitation, a dynamic microscale solid phase extraction ([micro]SPE) method capitalizing on the principle of programmable flow and bead injection analysis is herein proposed as a front end to liquid chromatography for multiresidue assays. It involves in-line renewable tandem-SPE microcolumns composed of molecularly imprinted polymers and copolymeric N-vinylpyrrolidone/divinylbenzene beads integrated within the flow network for multimodal extraction. Chlorotriazine herbicides (namely, atrazine, simazine, propazine) and principal degradation products thereof (namely, deisopropylatrazine and deethylatrazine) were selected as model analytes. The effect of several parameters, including the dimensions and chemical composition of the sorptive microcolumns, the sample loading flow rate, the type and volume of eluent, the interface with liquid chromatography (LC), and the disposable nature of the column on the analytical performance were investigated in detail. The assembled flow setup features appropriate removal of interfering organic species via solvent switch with toluene, the circumvention of analyte band-broadening in LC by in-line merging of the eluate with a water stream, and the transfer of the overall analyte-containing eluate into the LC. For 10-mL sample percolation, limits of detection (S/N = 3) of 0.02-0.04 ng [mL.sup.-1], limits of quantification (S/N = 10) of 0.07-0.12 ng [mL.sup.-1], absolute recovery percentages > 79%, precision within 1.4-5.5%, and enrichment factors of 46-49 were obtained for the suite of assayed herbicides. The multimodal [micro]SPE method with renewable beads was applied to the multiresidue determination of the target herbicides in crude soil extracts and untreated environmental waters at concentration levels below those endorsed by the current EU Water Framework Directives following appropriate sample preconcentration and/or cleanup. 10.1021/ac100185s
