Pomelo peel is a natural plant product with numerous pharmacological effects and is used in traditional Chinese medicine. In the present study, we extracted naringin from pomelo peel and aimed to decipher its therapeutic potential against hyperlipidemia. We used ultrasonic-assisted extraction to obtain naringin prior to identifying its structure, to evaluate its ability in binding sodium glycine cholate and sodium bovine cholate in vitro by simulating the gastrointestinal environment, so as to evaluate its blood lipid-lowering activity. The hyperlipidemia mouse model was established. Following the intragastric administration of naringin for 5 weeks, we measured the weight change, organ index, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), serum total cholesterol (TC), serum triglycerides (TG), liver superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) level, malondialdehyde (MDA), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) level of mice in the normal control and high-fat diet groups in addition to the high-, medium-, and low-dose naringin groups. The pathological changes in the liver were observed under a light microscope. The total RNA of the liver was extracted, and the mRNA expression level of lipid metabolism-related factors in mouse liver was detected via a fluorescence quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Naringin significantly (p < 0.01) reduced the body weight, organ index, serum TG, LDL-C, and TC levels of hyperlipidemic mice, but increased the serum HDL-C levels (p < 0.01). Furthermore, naringin increased GSH Px and SOD activity (p < 0.01), while decreasing MDA, ALT, and AST levels, as well as the liver index (p < 0.01). There was no statistically significant difference in the brain, heart, spleen, kidney, and other indicators (p > 0.05). A histopathological analysis of mouse liver showed that naringin could alleviate the degenerative damage of fatty liver cells in hyperlipidemic mice. Naringin could significantly (p < 0.01) reduce the expression of FAS and SREBP-1c mRNA, and simultaneously increase PPARα mRNA expression. This study shows that naringin has the strong effect of lowering lipids and protecting the liver in hyperlipidemic mice. Our findings underscore the anti-hyperlipidemia potential of naringin and increase the scientific understanding of its anti-hyperlipidemia effects, that may lead to its potential application as a dietary strategy for hyperlipidemia management in the future.

In the current background of intelligence and informatization, the YOLOv9 algorithm based on Haar wavelet downsampling (HWD) is proposed for vehicle and pedestrian target detection in complex environments with autonomous driving mode to intelligently collect pedestrian and vehicle targets on the road. The operation of Haar wavelet downsam- pling reduces the spatial resolution of feature maps and preserves detailed information such as edges and textures as much as possible, effectively reducing the uncertainty of information. By utilizing the sum of cross entropy loss and generalized dice loss as the loss function of the network, the difference between probability distributions can be effectively measured, and dice loss calculations can be performed pixel by pixel, making it easier to optimize the network. The experimental results show that the average accuracy of the proposed model reaches 95.86%, and the detection frame rate reaches 179 FPS on the KITTY dataset. Compared with YOLOv9, the improved algorithm can accurately identify vehicles and pedestrians of different scales on complex roads, which not only improves the redundancy of computational capacity and missed detection of small targets in the original detection algorithm, but also provides visual technology support for intelligent autonomous driving. The extracellular matrix (ECM) provides an integrated 3D environment for living cells to communicate and display collective behaviors. In bottom‐up synthetic biology, several new types of synthetic prototissues (assemblies of synthetic protocells) are developed to mimic various aspects of cellular signaling. However, the spatiotemporal interplay between supporting matrix and protocells, which is critical for mimicking macroscopic responsiveness of multicellular organisms, has remained challenging to control. Herein, a modular strategy is reported to construct macroscopic prototissues with complex structures based on hierarchical assembly of matrix and polymeric protocells prepared by using CaCO3 sacrificial microparticle templates. Mechanical coordination between protocells and matrix allows for the transformation in response to both the presence and history of multiple stimuli. Taking advantage of the multi‐responsiveness, it further demonstrated an artificial form of metabolic behaviors where a digestive prototissue prey on a substrate‐containing prototissue by two‐way communication. Overall, the methodology presents a strategy to achieve mechanical and chemical communication in matrix containing, tissue‐like materials harboring the potential to reconstitute collective behaviors for bottom‐up synthetic biology and bioinspired engineering. Coastal darkening is emerging as a global threat to fringing reefs. While some reef‐building corals exhibit resistance to low‐light environments, the mechanisms behind this resistance, particularly the role of coral hosts, remain inadequately understood. Here, we investigated variations in underwater photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) and employed the Bayesian stable isotope mixing model (MixSIAR) to estimate the contributions of autotrophic (i.e., dissolved inorganic matter, DIM) and heterotrophic sources (i.e., particulate organic matter, POM, and dissolved organic matter, DOM) to the nutrition of the reef coral Galaxea fascicularis on the Luhuitou turbid reef in the northern South China Sea. Our findings revealed that the heterotrophic contribution to coral nutrition increased to 58.5% with decreasing PAR and that the heterotrophic contribution was significantly negatively correlated with δ13C difference between host and symbiont (δ13Ch–s). Moreover, we observed significant seasonal variations in the respective contributions of POM and DOM to coral nutrition, linked to the sources of these nutrients, demonstrating that G. fascicularis can selectively ingest POM and DOM based on their bioavailability to enhance its heterotrophic contribution. This heterotrophic plasticity improved the low‐light resistance of G. fascicularis and contributed to its prominence within coral communities. However, with a low‐light threshold of approximately 3.73% of the surface PAR for G. fascicularis, our results underscore the need for effective strategies to mitigate low‐light conditions on nearshore turbid reefs. In summary, our study highlights the critical role of heterotrophic plasticity in coral responses to natural low‐light environments, suggesting that some reef‐building corals with such plasticity could become dominant or resilient species in the context of coastal darkening.
