Natural forests play a crucial role in providing various ecosystem services, including timber production and biodiversity conservation. However, climate change and anthropogenic factors pose a severe threat to competing forest ecosystem services functions. Therefore, to optimize and sustainably utilize competing forest services, tradeoffs are often necessary. This study was conducted in Northwest China to explore tradeoffs aimed at improving the quality of Quercus wutaishanica Mayr natural forests under climate change conditions, focusing on stand volume, timber production, and understory vegetation diversity conservation. Data from 77 field surveys were used to construct a coupled model for stand growth, stand structure, and site conditions. Changes in understory vegetation species number (UVSN) with crown cover were quantified. These models and relationships can be used as tools to estimate tradeoffs. As stand density increased, single-tree volume decreased, whereas timber volume increased. UVSN increased and then decreased with increasing crown cover and was able to maintain a relative maximum at 0.5–0.65. Under the current climatic conditions, the optimum stand densities corresponding to 30, 40, 50, and 60 years were 1390, 1153, 1042, and 871 trees/ha, respectively, to maintain a high UVSN and adequate stand volume. When mean annual temperature rose, stand densities could be reduced to maintain high-quality timber. This study was conducted in Liupanshan Forest Ecological Positioning Station of the National Forestry and Grassland Administration. We monitored sap flow of Larix principis-rupprechtii plantation in the Xiangshui River sub-basin throughout the 2019 growing season (from May 17 to October 12), as well as the meteorological conditions and soil environment ( soil temperature and soil water content), to analyze the comprehensive environmental responses of sap flow in L. principis-rupprechtii under different weather conditions. The results showed that sap flow rate increased and then decreased on the daily scale, with the highest rate on sunny days, followed by overcast days and then rainy days. Sap flow rate had a single peak on sunny days and multiple peaks on overcast and rainy days. Sunny days had earlier and longer sap flow compared to overcast and rainy days. Dominant factors driving sap flow differed across different weather. Vapor pressure deficit was the dominant factor influencing sap flow in sunny and overcast days, while solar radiation was dominant one in rainy days. The contribution rates of main factors to sap flow on sunny, overcast and rainy days were 31.1%, 27.4% and 40.1%, respectively. Results of the principal component analysis showed the factors affecting sap flow on sunny days could be classified into hydrothermal complex factors ( air temperature, soil temperature, and volumetric soil moisture), water vapor transpiration factors ( relative humidity and vapor pressure deficit), and radiation factor ( solar radiation) . The factors affecting sap flow on overcast and rainy days were combined into transpiration ( relative humidity, solar radiation, and vapor pressure deficit), heat ( air temperature and soil temperature), and soil water factor volumetric ( volumetric soil moisture). On sunny days, sap flow reached the peak value 110, 80, 70 min after the hydrothermal, water vapor transpiration, and radiation factors, respectively. On overcast and rainy days, sap flow reached its peak in 10, 20, 30 min and 140, 60, 150 min, respectively before the peaks of transpiration, heat, and soil water factors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Vegetation greening has been widely occurring on the Chinese Loess Plateau, and the contributions of human land-use management have been well-understood. However, the influences of climatic change and CO2 fertilization on reported vegetation variations remain difficult to determine. Therefore, we quantified the impacts of multiple factors on vegetation changes for the Chinese Loess Plateau from 2000 to 2019 by integrating satellite-based leaf area index (LAI) and simulated LAI from dynamic global vegetation models. More than 96% of the vegetated areas of the Loess Plateau exhibited greening trends, with an annually averaged satellite-based LAI rate of 0.037 ± 0.006 m2 m−2 a−1 (P < 0.01). Human land-use management and environmental change have jointly accelerated vegetation growth, explaining 54% and 46% of the overall greening trend, respectively. CO2 fertilization and climate change explain 55% and 45% of the greening trend due to environmental change, respectively; solar radiation and precipitation were the main driving factors for climate-induced vegetation greenness (P < 0.05). Spatially, the eastern part of the Loess Plateau was dominated by CO2 fertilization, while the western part was mainly affected by climate change. Furthermore, solar radiation was the key limiting factor affecting LAI variations in the relatively humid area, while precipitation was the major influencing factor in relatively arid areas. This study highlights the important roles that climate change and CO2 fertilization have played in vegetation greenness in recent decades of the Loess Plateau, despite strong influences of anthropogenic footprint.
