Conventional thermal recovery methods for heavy oil suffer from significant issues such as high water consumption, excessive greenhouse gas emissions, and substantial heat losses. In contrast, electromagnetic heating, as a waterless method for heavy oil recovery, offers numerous advantages, including high thermal energy utilization, reduced carbon emissions, and volumetric heating of the reservoir, making it a focus of recent research in heavy oil thermal recovery technologies. This paper presents a numerical simulation study of electromagnetic heating for heavy oil recovery, using a heavy oil block in the Bohai Bay oilfield in China as a case study. Firstly, a multiphysics field coupled to a mathematical model was established, considering the impact of the temperature on the heavy oil viscosity, the threshold pressure gradient of non-Darcy flow, and the dielectric properties of the reservoir, along with heat dissipation from overlying and undercover sandstone and gravitational effects on fluid flow. Secondly, a numerical simulation method for the coupled multiphysics fields was developed, and the convergence and stability of the numerical simulation method were tested. Finally, a sensitivity analysis based on the numerical simulation results identified the factors affecting heavy oil production. It was found that electromagnetic heating significantly enhances heavy oil production, and the threshold pressure gradient greatly influences the prediction of heavy oil production. Moreover, heat dissipation from the overlying and undercover sandstone severely reduces cumulative oil production. When the production well is located below the electromagnetic heating antenna, larger well spacing results in higher cumulative heavy oil production. Higher heavy oil production is achieved when the antenna is positioned at the center of the reservoir for the studied cases. Power has a big effect on increasing heavy oil production, but its influence diminishes as power increases. There exists an optimal range of electromagnetic frequencies for maximum cumulative production, and higher water saturation leads to poorer electromagnetic heating efficiency. This study provides a theoretical foundation and technical support for the numerical simulation technology and development plan optimization of heavy oil reservoirs subjected to electromagnetic heating. Offshore oil field loose sandstone reservoirs have high permeability. However, during the water injection process, water injection blockage occurs, causing an increase in injection pressure, making it impossible to continue injecting water on site. Current research mainly focuses on the factors causing water injection blockage, with less attention given to the blockage locations and the pressure increase caused by water injection. There is a lack of research on the change in the law of injection capacity. This paper establishes a simulation experiment for water injection blockage that can accommodate both homogeneous and heterogeneous cores. The experimental core is 1 m long and capable of simulating the blockage conditions in the near-well zone during water injection, thereby analyzing the core blockage position and blockage pressure. The study clarifies the influence of water quality indicators, heterogeneity, and core length on the blockage patterns in reservoirs during water injection. The research findings are as follows: I. The reservoir blockage samples were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), casting thin sections, and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. The results indicate that the main factors causing blockage are clay, silt, and fine particulate suspensions, with the fine particles mainly consisting of hydrated silicates and alkali metal oxides. The primary cause of blockage in loose sandstone is identified as the mechanism of migration and accumulation of clay, fine rock particles, and suspended matter in the injected water. II. By monitoring pressure and permeability changes in the core flooding experiments, the impact of reservoir heterogeneity on water injection capacity was evaluated. The evaluation results show that the blockage locations and lengths in heterogeneous cores are twice those in homogeneous cores. III. For heterogeneous reservoirs, if the initial permeability at the inlet is lower than in other segments of the core, significant blockage resistance occurs, with the final resistance being 1.27 times that of homogeneous cores. If the initial permeability at the inlet is higher than in other parts, the final blockage resistance is close to that of homogeneous cores. This study provides theoretical support for the analysis of blockage locations and pressures in loose sandstone water injection and offers technical support for the design of unplugging ranges and pressures after blockage in heterogeneous formations. Heavy oil resources are abundant globally, holding immense development potential. However, conventional thermal recovery methods such as steam injection are plagued by high heat loss, substantial carbon emissions, and significant water consumption, making them incompatible with carbon reduction goals and the sustainable socioeconomic development demands. A new method of high-frequency electromagnetic in situ heating, which targets polar molecules, can convert electromagnetic energy into heat so as to achieve rapid volumetric heating of the reservoir. This method has the potential to overcome the drawbacks of traditional techniques. Nevertheless, it faces significant drawbacks such as limited heating range and inadequate energy supply during later production stages, which necessitates auxiliary enhancement measures. Various enhancement measures have been reported, including nitrogen injection, hydrocarbon solvent injection, or the use of nano-metal oxide injections. These methods are hindered by issues such as pure nitrogen being easy to breakthrough, high costs, and metal pollution. Through extensive literature review, this article charts the evolution of high-frequency electromagnetic in situ heating technology for heavy oil and the current understanding of the coupled heat and mass transfer mechanisms underlying this technology. Moreover, based on a profound analysis of the technology's progression trends, this work introduces a new direction: CO2-N2 co-injection as an enhancement strategy for high-frequency electromagnetic in situ heavy oil recovery. There is promising potential for the development of new technologies in the future that combine high efficiency, low carbon emissions, environmental friendliness, economic viability, and energy conservation. Furthermore, some research prospects in low-carbon situations and challenges for the new technology in future are presented in detail. All in all, the contribution of the paper lies in the summarizing of some main drawbacks of current enhanced electromagnetic in situ thermal recovery methods, and presents a novel research direction of using CO2-N2 co-injection as an enhancement strategy based on its current research status in low-carbon situations. At present, many offshore oil fields are facing problems, such as pollution-induced near-well zone blockage, poor inter-well connectivity, and strong vertical heterogeneity, which lead to insufficient formation energy and low production in the middle and late stages of development. It is necessary to develop a new technology to overcome these issues. In this regard, water-injection-induced dilation technology, which was already proven to have positive effects on loose sandstone reservoirs, was controversially applied to an offshore low-permeability reservoir. To investigate whether the water-injection-induced dilation technology is suitable, experiments were conducted to analyze the dilation potential of offshore low-permeability sandstone reservoirs, namely, X-ray diffraction, laser particle size analysis, physical simulation, computed tomography scan, and electron microscope scanning experiments. The X-ray diffraction experiments showed that the samples had more than 80% non-clay mineral content and a high brittleness index, which meant more complex microfractures under water injection. Particle size analysis experiments revealed that the particle size was mainly between 10 μm and 100 μm, and thus belonged to coarse silty sand. According to the sorting grade, the sample particle size distribution was uniform and the reservoir was more prone to dilation. The true triaxial physical simulation showed that a volumetric dilation zone occurred around the wellbore, where complicated microfractures occurred. Under casing annulus gas venting, the annulus of the well is in a special state of zero-net liquid flow (ZNLF), leading to gas production without liquid at the wellhead, resulting in significant holdup issues. Therefore, conventional two-phase flow models cannot be used for calculation. To study the flow characteristics of ZNLF in the annulus of the well, this study established a visual experimental device with a total height of 5.4 m, an outer pipe inner diameter of 140 mm, and an inner pipe outer diameter of 72 mm. The flow characteristics of ZNLF were studied by controlling the casing pressure, initial liquid level, and bottom gas injection rate. The experimental results showed that the flow patterns of ZNLF are mainly bubbly flow and churn flow. Bubbly flow occurred at lower gas rates, while churn flow occurred at higher gas rates. In addition, the experiment found that when the gas injection rate and initial liquid column height were controlled to be the same, the liquid holdup decreased as the casing pressure increased. Analysis of the data patterns indicated that the slip velocity is related to the casing pressure. Based on the experimental results of ZNLF in the annulus, this study established standards for flow pattern transitions, holdup, and a pressure drop calculation model. [Objective] In recent years, high-yield gas wells, such as those in eastern Sichuan, Tarim Oilfield, and Dongfang Gas in the South China Sea, have been increasingly common. However, these wells are not without their challenges. The production pipe string of Sangao gas wells is prone to vibration failure due to the impact of high-speed gas. Taking the Kuqa high-pressure gas area of the Tarim Oilfield as an example, 19 failure incidents have been recorded out of 15 wells, resulting in huge economic property losses and, regrettably, casualties. The primary cause of these failures has been identified as the excessive dynamic load caused by pipe string vibration. Therefore, understanding the vibration characteristics of the production pipe string has become a crucial study area. The production string in oil and gas wells possesses its unique characteristics. Its large slenderness ratio results in a very low overall stiffness, which is difficult to simulate in a typical small experimental system. [Methods] In this study, we established a test bench for large production string evaluation. We developed an extensive, elongated string model using Polyethylene pipe to replicate the vibration characteristics of the production string under high-speed fluid impact. [Results] The experimental results show that the production string in Sangao gas wells vibrates at a constant frequency under the influence of a high-speed fluid. The vibration amplitude is most pronounced in the middle and bottom parts of the string. It was also observed that an increase in gas yield correlates with an increase in the severity of the pipe column's vibration. An effective method of curtailing this vibration amplitude involves increasing the wall thickness of the tubing. However, it is important to note that while this may reduce the tubing amplitude, it does not change the vibration frequency of the tubing string. The packer installation position also plays a pivotal role in vibration suppression. If the packer is installed too high or too low, it fails to effectively suppress vibration. The optimal placement for a single packer has been found to be at the 8/10 position of the string, where it can efficiently suppress vibration. This paper further delves into the analysis of displacement, frequency, and vibration characteristics of simulated tubing when subjected to a high-speed fluid within the tubes. [Conclusions] This study further explores the effects of pipe wall thickness, gas yield, and packer setting positions on the vibration characteristics of simulated tubing. The following conclusions were drawn from the research. When the fluid Reynolds number within the tube reaches 21 430, the simulated tubing presents a second-order vibration mode. This results in a substantial amplitude in the middle and bottom sections of the simulated tubing, which are prone to contact and collision with the casing wall, potentially resulting in pipe string failure. The wall thickness of the tubing exerts little effect on the vibration frequency of the simulated tubing. However, it significantly affects the vibration amplitude. The thicker the tubing, the smaller the vibration amplitude of the simulated tubing. Therefore, tubing vibration can be effectively suppressed by increasing tubing thickness during the actual production process. The larger the gas production, the greater the frequency and amplitude of the simulated tubing vibration. When gas production is excessively large, the tubing is likely to collide severely with the casing wall, thereby increasing the risk of tubing failure. Therefore, it is crucial in the actual production process to determine the daily gas output reasonably, keeping in mind the bearing limit of the tubing. Packers suppress string vibration by limiting the lateral displacement of the string. Installing multiple packers proves to be more effective than a single packer in suppressing vibration. The gas lift in the offshore M field will be performed with high CO2‐content associated gas, but the change of wellbore temperature and pressure during the injection process will lead to the change of phase and physical parameters of associated gas, which has a great impact on the design of gas lift. To ensure the smooth implementation of gas lift in the offshore M field, this paper conducts a study on the physical parameters of associated gas considering the change of CO2 phase state. We obtained the density, viscosity, compression factor, constant pressure specific heat capacity, thermal conductivity, and Joule Thomson coefficient at each temperature and pressure by Hysys calculation, and regression analysis to obtain the regression model of the physical parameters; finally, the regression model was compared with the flash experiment and Hysys calculation results. The results show that the CO2 phase change has a large influence on the physical parameters; R2 > 0.8, which indicates that the regression model has sufficient reliability; the results of the comparison show that the empirical formulas of all physical properties have sufficient accuracy and superiority except Joule–Thomson coefficients. In addition, the empirical formula of the Joule–Thomson coefficient also has good accuracy and superiority at the pressure not exceeding 22 MPa. The study of phase changes and physical parameters of associated gas with high CO2 content provides a basis for subsequent gas lift design in the offshore M field and multiphase flow calculations in the wellbore during the gas lift.
