Abstract

High energy collisions at the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (LHC) produce a large number of particles along the beam collision axis, outside of the acceptance of existing LHC experiments. The proposed Forward Physics Facility (FPF), to be located several hundred meters from the ATLAS interaction point and shielded by concrete and rock, will host a suite of experiments to probe Standard Model (SM) processes and search for physics beyond the Standard Model (BSM). In this report, we review the status of the civil engineering plans and the experiments to explore the diverse physics signals that can be uniquely probed in the forward region. FPF experiments will be sensitive to a broad range of BSM physics through searches for new particle scattering or decay signatures and deviations from SM expectations in high statistics analyses with TeV neutrinos in this low-background environment. High statistics neutrino detection will also provide valuable data for fundamental topics in perturbative and non-perturbative QCD and in weak interactions. Experiments at the FPF will enable synergies between forward particle production at the LHC and astroparticle physics to be exploited. 6. On the intrinsic bottom content of the nucleon

Abstract

We demonstrate that to a very good approximation the scale-evolution of the intrinsic heavy quark content of the nucleon is governed by non-singlet evolution equations. This allows us to analyze the intrinsic heavy quark distributions without having to resort to a full-fledged global analysis of parton distribution functions. This freedom is then exploited to model intrinsic bottom distributions which are so far missing in the literature in order to estimate the impact of this non-perturbative contribution to the bottom-quark PDF, and on parton--parton luminosities at the LHC. Abstract

Heavy quark parton distribution functions (PDFs) play an important role in several Standard Model and New Physics processes. Most analyses rely on the assumption that the charm and bottom PDFs are generated perturbatively by gluon splitting and do not involve any non-perturbative degrees of freedom. Abstract

With recent advances in the precision of inclusive lepton--nuclear scattering experiments, it has become apparent that comparable improvements are needed in the accuracy of the theoretical analysis tools. In particular, when extracting parton distribution functions in the large-x region, it is crucial to correct the data for effects associated with the nonzero mass of the target. We present here a comprehensive review of these target mass corrections (TMC) to structure functions data, summarizing the relevant formulas for TMCs in electromagnetic and weak processes. We include a full analysis of both hadronic and partonic masses, and trace how these effects appear in the operator product expansion and the factorized parton model formalism, as well as their limitations when applied to data in the x->1 limit. We evaluate the numerical effects of TMCs on various structure functions, and compare fits to data with and without these corrections., Comment: 41 pages, 13 figures; minor updates to match published version

10. Muon spectra of Quasi-Elastic and 1-pion production events at the KEK LBL neutrino oscillation experiment

Abstract

We present predictions for the flux averaged muon energy spectra of quasi-elastic (QE) and 1-pion production events for the K2K long-baseline experiment. Using the general kinematical considerations we show that the muon energy spectra closely follow the neutrino energy spectrum with downward shift of the energy scale by 0.15 GeV (QE) and 0.4 GeV (1-pion production). These predictions seem to agree with the observed muon energy spectra in the K2K nearby detector. We also show the spectral distortion of these muon energy spectra due to the neutrino oscillation for the SK detector. Comparison of the predicted spectral distortions with the observed muon spectra of the 1-Ring and 2-Ring muon events in the SK detector will help to determine the oscillation parameters. 11. Neutrino Production of Resonances

Abstract

We take a fresh look at the analysis of resonance production by neutrinos. We consider three resonances $P_{33}, P_{11}$ and $S_{11}$ with a detailed discussion of their form factors. The article presents results for free proton and neutron targets and discusses the corrections which appear on nuclear targets. The Pauli suppression factor is derived in the Fermi gas model and shown to apply to resonance production. The importance of the various resonances is demonstrated with numerical calculations. The $\Delta$-resonance is described by two formfactors and its differential cross sections are compared with experimental data. 13. Borel-Pade vs Borel-Weniger method: a QED and a QCD example

Abstract

Recently, Weniger (delta sequence) method has been proposed by the authors of Ref. [1] (Jentschura et al.) for resummation of truncated perturbation series in quantum field theories. Those authors presented numerical evidence suggesting that this method works better than Pade approximants when we resum a function with singularities in the Borel plane but not on the positive axis. We present here numerical evidence suggesting that in such cases the combined method of Borel-Pade works better than its analog Borel-Weniger, and that it may work better or comparably well in some of the cases when there are singularities on the positive axis in the Borel plane., Comment: 11 pages, 9 eps-figures, revtex; one reference added, one sentence (in 3rd paragraph after Eq.(11)) added for better clarity, references updated

14. Nonperturbative dispersive sector in strong (quasi-)Abelian fields

Abstract

In strong (quasi-)Abelian fields, even at the one-loop level of the coupling constant, quantum fluctuations of fermions induce an effective Lagrangian density whose imaginary (absorptive) part is purely nonperturbative and known to be responsible for the fermion-antifermion pair creation. On the other hand, the induced real (dispersive) part has perturbative and nonperturbative contributions. In the one-loop case, we argue how to separate the two contributions from each other for any strength of the field. We show numerically that the nonperturbative contributions are in general comparable with or larger than the induced perturbative ones. We arrive at qualitatively similar conclusions also for the induced energy density. Further, we investigate numerically the quasianalytic continuation of the perturbative results into the nonperturbative sector, by employing (modified) Borel-Pade. It turns out that in the case at hand, we have to integrate over renormalon singularities, but there is no renormalon ambiguity involved., Comment: 25 pages, 15 eps-figures, revtex; improved presentation, results unchanged; to appear in Int.J.Mod.Phys.A

Abstract

High energy collisions at the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (LHC) produce a large number of particles along the beam collision axis, outside of the acceptance of existing LHC experiments. The proposed Forward Physics Facility (FPF), to be located several hundred meters from the ATLAS interaction point and shielded by concrete and rock, will host a suite of experiments to probe standard model (SM) processes and search for physics beyond the standard model (BSM). In this report, we review the status of the civil engineering plans and the experiments to explore the diverse physics signals that can be uniquely probed in the forward region. FPF experiments will be sensitive to a broad range of BSM physics through searches for new particle scattering or decay signatures and deviations from SM expectations in high statistics analyses with TeV neutrinos in this low-background environment. High statistics neutrino detection will also provide valuable data for fundamental topics in perturbative and non-perturbative QCD and in weak interactions. Experiments at the FPF will enable synergies between forward particle production at the LHC and astroparticle physics to be exploited. We report here on these physics topics, on infrastructure, detector, and simulation studies, and on future directions to realize the FPF's physics potential.

Abstract

Carbon monoxide dehydrogenase (CO-DH) is an enzyme catalysing the oxidation of CO to carbon dioxide in Mycobacterium sp+ strain JC1 DSM 3803. Cloning of the genes encoding CO-DH from the bacterium and sequencing of overlapping clones revealed the presence of duplicated sets of genes for three subunits of the enzyme, cutB1C1A1 and cutB2C2A2, in operons, and a cluster of genes encoding proteins that may be involved in CO metabolism, including a possible transcriptional regulator. Phylogenetic analysis based on the amino acid sequences of large subunite of CO-DH suggested that the CO-DHs of Mycobacterium sp. JC1 and other mycobacteria are distinct from those of other types of bacteria. The growth phenotype of mutant strains lacking cutA genes and of a corresponding complemented strain showed that both of the duplicated sets of CO-DH genes were functional in this bacterium. Transcriptional fusions of the cutB genes with lacZ revealed that the cutBCA operons were expressed regardless of the presence of CO and were further inducible by CO. Primer extension analysis indicated two promoters, one expressed in the absence of CO and the other induced in the presence of CO. This is believed to be the first report to show the presence of multiple copies of CO-DH genes with identical sequences and in close proximity in carboxydobacteria, and to present the genetic evidence for the function of the genes in mycobacteria. We use the nCTEQ nPDFs with uncertainties to study the impact of the LHC W/Z production data on both the flavor differentiation and nuclear corrections; this complements the information from neutrino-DIS data. As the proton flavor determination is dependent on nuclear corrections (from heavy target DIS, for example), LHC heavy ion measurements can also help improve proton PDFs. We introduce a new implementation of the nCTEQ code (nCTEQ++) based on C++ which has a modular strucure and enables us to easily integrate programs such as HOPPET, APPLgrid, and MCFM. Abstract

• Katsuobushi characterized by FTIR, NIR, and GC–MS for smoking treatments. • PCA, PLS-DA, and HCA correctly classified katsuobushi by smoking treatment. • Multivariate analysis showed UV–Vis-NIR's greater efficacy than FTIR. • An accurate quality prediction model was built through PLSR analysis. • It is feasible to estimate Katsuobushi quality based on the FTIR and NIR spectra. Katsuobushi, a smoked, dried skipjack tuna, is a traditional Japanese food additive with a unique flavor and taste. Gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS), fourier transform infrared (FTIR), and ultraviolet-visible-near infrared spectroscopy (UV-Vis-NIR) combined with chemometric methods were evaluated the quality of katsuobushi according to the number of smoking treatments. Using GC-MS, 46 metabolites were identified and five metabolites were selected as key compounds. All samples were classified according to their smoking number via principal component analysis (PCA), partial least squares-discriminate analysis (PLS-DA) and hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) of the FTIR and NIR spectra. Partial least squares regression (PLSR) analysis revealed that the FTIR and NIR spectra were highly correlated with the metabolites by GC-MS. These results demonstrated the potential of using the FTIR and NIR spectroscopy combined with chemometrics to assess the quality of katsuobushi based on the smoking treatments, with NIR spectroscopy showed particularly promising. Abstract

The LHC heavy ion data for W/Z production can provide new incisive information on the PDFs. This data is sensitive to the heavier quark flavors (strange and charm) in a high energy kinematic region; this can facilitate the determination of PDFs in the small x region where previous data was limited. At present, the flavor separation of the proton PDFs is dependent on DIS data from nuclear targets.
