15. Effect of Short-Term Administration of Glucagon on Gene Expression of the Insulin Receptor in Primary Cultured Calf Hepatocytes

Abstract

This study investigated whether increased glucagon levels, caused by the short-term administration of glucagon, lead to an increase in gene expression of the insulin receptor (InsR) in calf hepatocytes cultured in vitro. After 72 hrs of culturing, glucagon was added to calf hepatocytes at a five different concentrations of 0, 1, 10, 100 and 1000 nM. InsR mRNA expression was determined by internally controlled reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction. No changes in InsR mRNA expression (InsR/β-actin gray scale) were detected in hepatocytes treated with glucagon compared with the control group and there were no significant differences between the different concentrations. In conclusion, short-term administration of glucagon did not directly influence the gene expression of InsR in primary cultured calf hepatocytes.

Abstract

Due to mechanical loads, thermal fields and the limitation of the manufacturing technology, initial stresses in layered cylindrical structures are ineluctable. Accordingly, for the purpose of the guided wave nondestructive testing for the layered cylindrical structure with a sectorial cross-section, an analytical approach, the double-orthogonal polynomial method is utilized to investigate the influence of axial initial stress on wave characteristics. Based on Biot's "Mechanics of Incremental Deformations", the dynamic equations for the sectorial cylindrical structures in terms of displacements and axial initial stress are deduced. By virtual of the Heaviside function, the boundary conditions are automatically incorporated into constitutive equations and then into wave equations. The corresponding dispersion curves and displacement distributions of various sectorial cylindrical structures are calculated. Numerical results indicate that the influence of the initial stress applied on the outer layer is much significant at low frequencies, and the influence of the initial stress applied on the inner layer is much significant at high frequencies; the cut-off frequencies have negative relation with the area of the cross-section; the displacements at high frequencies are mainly distributed in the layer with smaller elasticity modulus, especially the layer simultaneously with bigger initial stress. Abstract

This work presents the modeling of high contrast partially electroded resonators by means of a polynomial approach. This method allows easily solving the equations that govern the structure. The boundary, symmetry, and continuity conditions are automatically incorporated into the equations of motion by the use of delta functions for the variables stress (T) and electric displacement (D) and appropriate analytical expression forms for the independent variables, mechanical displacements (u), and electric potential ([lowercase_phi_synonym]). Structure symmetry was used to reduce the number of unknowns. For the zinc oxide (ZnO) resonator in extreme geometrical cases (thin plate and bar cases), a good agreement was obtained between the results of the proposed polynomial approach and those of an analytical approach for both the modal and harmonic analyses. The proposed polynomial approach was used to calculate the 2D resonator electrical admittance (full and partial metallization) near the 1D thickness fundamental mode, and the results highlight the presence of spurious modes. Influence of the metallization rate on the number of spurious modes in the bandwidth is studied. This model can also easily calculate the electromechanical coupling coefficient and the field profiles. Illustrations for both electromechanical coupling coefficient and particle displacement profiles are given for aluminium nitride (AlN), lead zirconate titanate, and ZnO resonators. Abstract

Fifth generation mobile networks (5G) will be featured by miniaturised cells and massive dense deployment. Traditional centralised network control cannot adapt to high signalling delay, and is therefore not scalable for future 5G networks.To address this issue, we adopt the software-defined networking (SDN) approach of decoupled network control and data transmission. In particular, delay-sensitive interference suppression for data transmission is decoupled from delay-tolerant topology control and base station coordination. This substantially alleviates the requirement of network control on delay and complexity, hence simplifying 5G control plane design, reducing signalling overhead, and enhancing network scalability. Case studies show that our decoupled network control is effective for timely interference mitigation and reliable topology management. Abstract

TiO2 anatase nanoplates and hollow microspheres were fabricated by a solvothermal-hydrothermal method using titanium isopropoxide as a titanium precursor and hydrofluoric acid as a capping agent in order to enhance the formation of the {001} crystal facets of the anatase nanocrystals. These different morphological structures of TiO2 anatase can be achieved by only changing the solvent, keeping the amount of the precursor and of the capping agent identical during the solvothermal-hydrothermal process. After calcination of the samples, the adsorbed fluoride atoms on the {001} crystal facets of the TiO2 anatase nanocrystals were completely removed from their surface according to XPS analysis. The calcined TiO2 anatase structures were higher crystallized and the specific surface area of the catalysts increased, enhancing their photocatalytic activity in comparison to the non-calcined TiO2 anatase structures. All TiO2 anatase samples with adsorbed as well as non-adsorbed fluoride atoms on their {001} crystal facets, exhibited a higher photonic efficiency than Degussa P25, which was used as a reference. The fluoride free TiO2 anatase nanoplates exhibited the best photocatalytic activity in oxidizing the NO gas to NO2 and NO3 (-). Environmental Science and Pollution Research

Abstract

Identifying and studying the molecular mechanisms of neovascularization biomarkers are critical for conquering many diseases, such as corneal diseases and cancer. Paxillin is an important cell scaffold and cellular signaling protein, especially a key molecule of the Integrin-mediated downstream signaling transduction. This review summarizes the structure and functions of paxillin, and the research progress of its roles in neovascularization. Abstract

The orthogonal polynomial approach has been used to solve the guided wave propagation in structures for about 20 years, but was limited until now to one-dimensional structures, that is, structures with a finite dimension in only one direction, such as horizontally infinite flat plates and axially infinite hollow cylinders. This paper extends the orthogonal polynomial approach to two-dimensional structures, that is, structures with finite dimensions in two directions, with illustration on the multilayered rectangular rod. Through numerical comparison with the available results, the validity of the extended polynomial approach is illustrated. The dispersion curves and displacement distributions of various layered rectangular rods are obtained to show their guided wave characteristics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
