4. A High-Precision Multi-Channel TAC and QAC Module for the Neutron Detection Wall

Abstract

A single width NIM module that includes eight channels TAC (time-to-amplitude converter) and QAC (charge-to-amplitude converter) is introduced in the paper, which is designed for the large neutron wall detector to measure charge (energy) and time interval simultaneously [1]. The module mainly adopts a high precision gated integral circuit to realize TAC and QAC. The input range of TAC is from 30 ns to 1 us, and the input range of QAC is from 40 pC to 600 pC. The linearity error of TAC is lower than 1.28 %, and the time resolution of TAC is less than 0.871 %. The linearity error of QAC is lower than 0.81 %, and the resolution of QAC is better than 0.936 %.

Abstract

The DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) is well suitable for searching for monochromatic and sharp $\gamma$-ray structures in the GeV$-$TeV range thanks to its unprecedented high energy resolution. In this work, we search for $\gamma$-ray line structures using five years of DAMPE data. To improve the sensitivity, we develop two types of dedicated data sets (including the BgoOnly data which is the first time to be used in the data analysis for the calorimeter-based gamma-ray observatories) and adopt the signal-to-noise ratio optimized regions of interest (ROIs) for different DM density profiles. No line signals or candidates are found between 10 and 300 GeV in the Galaxy. The constraints on the velocity-averaged cross section for $\chi\chi \to \gamma\gamma$ and the decay lifetime for $\chi \to \gamma\nu$, both at 95% confidence level, have been calculated and the systematic uncertainties have been taken into account. Comparing to the previous Fermi-LAT results, though DAMPE has an acceptance smaller by a factor of $\sim 10$, similar constraints on the DM parameters are achieved and below 100 GeV the lower limits on the decay lifetime are even stronger by a factor of a few. Abstract

Aims: To describe the experiences and perceptions of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) patients with a prolonged decision‐making phase of treatment‐seeking. Background: Previous attempts to reduce the treatment‐seeking time of AMI have been less than optimal. Due to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19) pandemic, the situation of prehospital delay is possibly worse. Decisions to seek treatment are influenced by multiple factors and need individualised interventions. Understanding patients' external and internal experiences and psychological perceptions is essential. Design: Meta‐synthesis. Data sources: We searched PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Scopus and four Chinese databases from inception to April 2022. Methods: We screened the retrieved articles with predetermined inclusion and exclusion criteria, and reviewed articles using Thomas and Harden's (BMC Medical Research Methodology, 2008 8, 45) qualitative thematic synthesis approach. The Joanna Briggs Institute critical appraisal tool for qualitative research was used to assess the quality of studies. Results: Twenty‐one studies were included, identifying four themes and nine sub‐themes. The four primary themes were difficulty recognising and attributing symptoms, attempt to act, unwillingness to change and self‐sacrifice. Conclusion: Deciding to seek treatment is a complex social and psychological process, which needs comprehensive interventions considering personal and sociocultural factors and factors related to the COVID‐19 pandemic. Implications for the profession and/or patient care: Details of interventions for decisions to seek treatment in AMI patients need to be further designed and evaluated. Impact: Results would help healthcare professionals to implement individualised management of decision‐making of treatment‐seeking among AMI patients, and improve medical records of patients' prehospital experiences. Abstract

The first Mars exploration mission of China (Tianwen-1) is scheduled to be launched in 2020; a charged particle telescope, the Mars Energetic Particle Analyzer (MEPA), is carried as one of the payloads on the orbiter. The MEPA is designed to measure solar energetic particles (SEPs) and galactic cosmic rays (GCRs) in the near-Mars space and in the transfer orbit from Earth to Mars. Before the launch, the MEPA was calibrated in ground experiments with radioactive sources, electronic pulses, and accelerator beams. The calibration parameters, such as energy conversion constants, threshold values for the triggers, and particle identification criteria, were determined and have been stored for onboard use. The validity of the calibration parameters has been verified with radioactive sources and beams. The calibration results indicate that the MEPA can measure charged particles reliably, as designed, and that it can satisfy the requirements of the Tianwen-1 mission.

Abstract

Aim: To explore why young‐ and middle‐aged adults ignore prodromal myocardial infarction symptoms from a life course and sociocultural perspective. Design: A qualitative descriptive study. Methods: We applied purposeful sampling to recruit participants from a tertiary hospital in Guangzhou from July to November 2021. Face‐to‐face interviews were performed. Interviews were audio‐recorded, transcribed verbatim and analysed using thematic analysis methods. Results: Twenty‐four young‐ and middle‐aged adults diagnosed with acute myocardial infarction participated in this study. Analysis revealed three main themes: I'm still young, it will not happen to me; to be somebody and different roles, multiple pressures. Age‐related self‐confidence led to inappropriate perceptions and responses to prodromal symptoms among young‐ and middle‐aged adults. These individuals strived to align their behaviours and attention with social expectations and self‐expectations, underestimating the importance of perceiving the warning signs of acute myocardial infarction and seeking medical treatment. Pressure from social roles also prevented them from paying enough attention to prodromal symptoms. Conclusion: Targeted social support, public education and technologies should be provided to these individuals since they are pillars of the family and society. We also highlight how nurses can function these strategies appropriately. Impacts: This study contributes to a better understanding of the neglect of prodromal symptoms among young‐ and middle‐aged adults. Its results enhance our understanding of the perception of and coping with prodromal symptoms among this population, which will help avoid the burden caused by acute myocardial infarction. Abstract

The isotopic cross sections of residual nuclei produced in fragmentation reactions of 18O projectiles impinging on a carbon target at energies near 260 MeV/nucleon were measured at the HIRFL facility in Lanzhou (China). A full identification of atomic and mass numbers of fragments was achieved from the determination of their magnetic rigidity, energy loss, and time of flight. The production cross sections for a dozen of nitrogen, carbon, and boron isotopes were determined with uncertainties below 30% for most of the cases. The obtained cross sections for N and B isotopes show a rather good agreement with previous experimental data obtained with different projectile energies. The cross sections for some C isotopes seem to exhibit a dependence on the projectile energy. A comparison of the data and several theoretical model calculations are presented.

Abstract

The Mars radiation environment, both in past and at present, plays a vital role in the evolution of Martian atmosphere, so it is necessary to detect the background radiation environment both in the Martian atmosphere and the transfer orbit from Earth to Mars. The Tianwen-1 Energetic Particle Analyzer (EPA) is designed to measure and analyze the energetic charged particles emitted to the Martian atmosphere. Mars-EPA consists of two parts: one is the Mars-EPA sensor head and the other is the Mars-EPA electronics system. This paper begins with an introduction of Mars-EPA structure and function of each part, followed by a simulation of how sensor head structure is designed. It then evaluates the performance of detection system using Geant4 software, to whether this sensor is capable of identifying the target particle and proposes a reasonable ground calibration procedure, which allows on overall detection performance to some degree. This Mars-EPA has demonstrated a potentially high capability and configurability which hopefully will shed light on future development of compact energetic detectors in deep space exploration.

Abstract

The DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) is a satellite-borne detector for high-energy cosmic rays and $\gamma$-rays. To fully understand the detector performance and obtain reliable physical results, extensive simulations of the detector are necessary. The simulations are particularly important for the data analysis of cosmic ray nuclei, which relies closely on the hadronic and nuclear interactions of particles in the detector material. Widely adopted simulation softwares include the GEANT4 and FLUKA, both of which have been implemented for the DAMPE simulation tool. Here we describe the simulation tool of DAMPE and compare the results of proton shower properties in the calorimeter from the two simulation softwares. Such a comparison gives an estimate of the most significant uncertainties of our proton spectral analysis., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures, to be published in Chinese Physics Letters

Abstract

The elemental fragmentation cross sections of boron fragments produced by stable and neutron-rich 12-16C beams with a carbon target were systematically measured at an incident beam energy of approximately 240 MeV/nucleon. The measured cross sections were found to increase as the projectile mass number increases. The observed feature is explained qualitatively based on the abrasion-ablation two-stage reaction model and is compared quantitatively with predictions from various reaction models, including empirical and statistical models. All models agree with the measured cross sections within a factor of 2.

Abstract

A Time-Of-Flight Wall (TOFW) detector has been designed and constructed at the External Target Facility (ETF) of HIRFL-CSR. The detector covers a sensitive area of 1.2 × 1.2 m 2 and consists of 30 modules. Each module is composed of a long plastic scintillator bar with two photo-multiplier tubes coupled at both ends for readout. The design and manufacture details are described and the test results are reported. The performance of the TOFW detector has been tested and measured with cosmic rays and a 310 MeV/u 40Ar beam. The results show that the time resolutions of all the TOFW modules are better than 128 ps, satisfying the requirements of the experiments which will be carried out at the ETF.

Abstract

A prototype of a new CsI(Tl) telescope, which will be used in the reaction studies of light isotopes with energy of several hundred AMeV, was constructed and tested at the Institute of Modern Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences. The telescope has a multi-layer structure, and the range information was obtained to improve the particle identification performance. This prototype has seven layers of different thickness. An energy resolution of 5.0% (FWHM) was obtained for one of the layers in a beam test experiment. Positive improvement for the identification of 14O and 15O isotopes was achieved using the range information.

Abstract

Aim: The aim of this work is to investigate nurses' perceptions of barriers constraining the implementation of the Internet Plus Nursing Service program. Background: The Internet Plus Nursing Service programme helps meet the demands of an ageing population, people with chronic diseases, the disabled, and home convalescents, and affirms the value of nurses. However, this programme has failed to elicit nurses' active participation, and there is limited knowledge regarding nurses' perceptions of the barriers to the programme's implementation. Methods: A qualitative study was conducted. Thematic analysis of the data was performed. Results: The analysis yielded three main themes: a sense of insecurity, role conflict, and a lack of support. Conclusion: This study explores nurses' perspectives on the factors impeding the implementation of the programme, which are identified as being insufficient protection and support on nurses at personal, sociocultural, infrastructural, and organizationallevels. Implications for Nursing Management: The study results will guide the department of nursing management to foster supportive work and social environment for nurses, which will decrease their feeling of insecurity and role conflicts and provides them enough infrastructural and organizational supports through proposing emergency code system and improving training system and team collaboration. Abstract

The precise measurement of the energy spectrum of cosmic ray proton is very important for the study of cosmic ray physics. The DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE), a space-based high energy particle detector, has a very good potential to measure cosmic-ray protons up to 100 TeV. Since its successful launch on December 17, 2015, DAMPE has been operated on-orbit for more than three years. Here, the analysis of the cosmic-ray proton spectrum from 40GeV to 100TeV with DAMPE experiment will be reported.

Abstract

With the aim of simulating the harsh temperature condition of space, a thallium-activated cesium iodide crystal (CsI:Tl) detector readout with a PIN photodiode (CsI:Tl(PD)) and with a silicon photomultiplier (CsI:Tl(SiPM)) is investigated over a temperature range from − 40 to 40 °C. With the increase in temperature, the output signal increases by ~ 24% with CsI:Tl(PD) and decreases by ~ 69% with CsI:Tl(SiPM). To reduce the effect of temperature in outer space, a method of bias voltage compensation is adopted for CsI:Tl(SiPM). Abstract

One of the main purposes of the DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) is to measure the cosmic ray nuclei up to several tens of TeV or beyond, whose origin and propagation remains a hot topic in astrophysics. The Plastic Scintillator Detector (PSD) on top of DAMPE is designed to measure the charges of cosmic ray nuclei from H to Fe and serves as a veto detector for discriminating gamma-rays from charged particles. We propose in this paper a charge reconstruction procedure to optimize the PSD performance in charge measurement. Essentials of our approach, including track finding, alignment of PSD, light attenuation correction, quenching and equalization correction are described detailedly in this paper after a brief description of the structure and operational principle of the PSD. Our results show that the PSD works very well and almost all the elements in cosmic rays from H to Fe are clearly identified in the charge spectrum., Comment: 20 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

A large dynamic range is required by the Plastic Scintillator Detector (PSD) of DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) to detect particles from electron to heavy ions with Z ≤ 20 . To expand the dynamic range, the readout design based on the double-dynodes signal extraction from the photomultiplier tube has been proposed and adopted by PSD. To verify this design, a prototype detector module has been constructed and tested with cosmic ray and relativistic ion beam. The results match with the estimation and the readout unit could easily cover the required dynamic range of about 4 orders of magnitude.
