We propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel protocol for transferring quantum states between superconducting cavities using only continuous two-mode squeezing interactions, without exchange of photonic excitations between cavities. This approach conceptually resembles quantum teleportation, where quantum information is transferred between different nodes without directly transmitting carrier photons. In contrast to the discrete operations of entanglement and Bell-state measurement in teleportation, our scheme is symmetric and continuous. We experimentally realize coherent and bidirectional transfer of arbitrary quantum states, including bosonic quantum error correction codes. Our results offer new insights into the quantum state transfer and quantum teleportation. In particular, our demonstration validates a new approach to realize quantum transducers, and might find applications in a wide range of physical platforms.

The ability to fast reset a qubit state is crucial for quantum information processing. However, to actively reset a qubit requires engineering a pathway to interact with a dissipative bath, which often comes with the cost of reduced qubit protection from the environment. Here, we present a novel multi-purpose architecture that enables fast reset and protection of superconducting qubits during control and readout. In our design, two on-chip diplexers are connected by two transmission lines. The high-pass branch provides a flat passband for convenient allocation of readout resonators above the qubit frequencies, which is preferred for reducing measurement-induced state transitions. In the low-pass branch, we leverage a standing-wave mode below the maximum qubit frequency for a rapid reset. The qubits are located in the common stopband to inhibit dissipation during coherent operations. We demonstrate resetting a transmon qubit from its first excited state to the ground state in 100 ns, achieving a residual population of 2.7%, mostly limited by the thermal effect. The reset time may be further shortened to 27 ns by exploiting the coherent population inversion effect. We further extend the technique to resetting the qubit from its second excited state. To effectively implement quantum algorithms on noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) processors is a central task in modern quantum technology. NISQ processors feature tens to a few hundreds of noisy qubits with limited coherence times and gate operations with errors, so NISQ algorithms naturally require employing circuits of short lengths via quantum compilation. Here, we develop a reinforcement learning (RL)-based quantum compiler for a superconducting processor and demonstrate its capability of discovering novel and hardware-amenable circuits with short lengths. We show that for the three-qubit quantum Fourier transformation, a compiled circuit using only seven CZ gates with unity circuit fidelity can be achieved. The compiler is also able to find optimal circuits under device topological constraints, with lengths considerably shorter than those by the conventional method. Our study exemplifies the codesign of the software with hardware for efficient quantum compilation, offering valuable insights for the advancement of RL-based compilers.

Isolated interacting quantum systems generally thermalize, yet there are several counterexamples for the breakdown of ergodicity, such as many-body localization and quantum scars. Recently, ergodicity breaking has been observed in systems subjected to linear potentials, termed Stark many-body localization. This phenomenon is closely associated with Hilbert-space fragmentation, characterized by a strong dependence of dynamics on initial conditions. Here, we experimentally explore initial-state dependent dynamics using a ladder-type superconducting processor with up to 24 qubits, which enables precise control of the qubit frequency and initial state preparation. In systems with linear potentials, we observe distinct non-equilibrium dynamics for initial states with the same quantum numbers and energy, but with varying domain wall numbers. This distinction becomes increasingly pronounced as the system size grows, in contrast with disordered interacting systems. Conical intersections (CIs) are pivotal in many photochemical processes. Traditional quantum chemistry methods, such as the state-average multi-configurational methods, face computational hurdles in solving the electronic Schr\"odinger equation within the active space on classical computers. While quantum computing offers a potential solution, its feasibility in studying CIs, particularly on real quantum hardware, remains largely unexplored. Here, we present the first successful realization of a hybrid quantum-classical state-average complete active space self-consistent field method based on the variational quantum eigensolver (VQE-SA-CASSCF) on a superconducting quantum processor. This approach is applied to investigate CIs in two prototypical systems - ethylene (C2H4) and triatomic hydrogen (H3). We illustrate that VQE-SA-CASSCF, coupled with ongoing hardware and algorithmic enhancements, can lead to a correct description of CIs on existing quantum devices. Noise in quantum information processing poses a significant obstacle to achieving precise results. Quantum error mitigation techniques are crucial for improving the accuracy of experimental expectation values in this process. In the experiments, it is commonly observed that some measured events violate certain principles, such as symmetry constraints. These events can be considered junk information and should be discarded in a post-selection process. In this work, we introduce a quantum error mitigation method named Self-Trained Quantum Noise Filter (SQNF), which leverages the junk information to differentiate errors from the experimental population distributions, thereby aiming to approximate the error-free distribution. Our numerical results demonstrate that the proposed method can significantly reduce the infidelity of population distributions compared to the traditional post-selection method. Notably, the infidelity reduction is achieved without additional experimental resource consumption. Our method is scalable and applicable to multi-qubit computing systems.

Demonstrating that logical qubits outperform their physical counterparts is a milestone for achieving reliable quantum computation. Here, we propose to protect logical qubits with a novel dynamical decoupling scheme that implements iSWAP gates on nearest-neighbor physical qubits, and experimentally demonstrate the scheme on superconducting transmon qubits. In our scheme, each logical qubit only requires two physical qubits. A universal set of quantum gates on the logical qubits can be achieved such that each logical gate comprises only one or two physical gates. Our experiments reveal that the coherence time of a logical qubit is extended by up to 366% when compared to the better-performing physical qubit. Moreover, to the best of our knowledge, we demonstrate for the first time that multiple logical qubits outperform their physical counterparts in superconducting qubits. We illustrate a set of universal gates through a logical Ramsey experiment and the creation of a logical Bell state. The advancement of scalable quantum information processing relies on the accurate and parallel manipulation of a vast number of qubits, potentially reaching into the millions. Superconducting qubits, traditionally controlled through individual circuitry, currently face a formidable scalability challenge due to the excessive use of wires. This challenge is nearing a critical point where it might soon surpass the capacities of on-chip routing, I/O packaging, testing platforms, and economically feasible solutions. Here we introduce a multiplexed control scheme that efficiently utilizes shared control lines for operating multiple qubits and couplers. By integrating quantum hardware-software co-design, our approach utilizes advanced techniques like frequency multiplexing and individual tuning. This enables simultaneous and independent execution of single- and two-qubit gates with significantly simplified wiring. This scheme has the potential to diminish the number of control lines by one to two orders of magnitude in the near future, thereby substantially enhancing the scalability of superconducting quantum processors.

The concept of Maxwell demon plays an essential role in connecting thermodynamics and information theory, while entanglement and non-locality are fundamental features of quantum theory. Given the rapid advancements in the field of quantum information science, there is a growing interest and significance in investigating the connection between Maxwell demon and quantum correlation. The majority of research endeavors thus far have been directed towards the extraction of work from quantum correlation through the utilization of Maxwell demon. Recently, a novel concept called Maxwell demon-assistant Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) steering has been proposed, which suggests that it is possible to simulate quantum correlation by doing work. This seemingly counterintuitive conclusion is attributed to the fact that Alice and Bob need classical communication during EPR steering task, a requirement that does not apply in the Bell test. In this study, we demonstrate Maxwell demon-assistant EPR steering with superconducting quantum circuits. By compiling and optimizing a quantum circuit to be implemented on a 2D superconducting chip, we were able to achieve a steering parameter of $S_{2} = 0.770 \pm 0.005$ in the case of two measurement settings, which surpasses the classical bound of $1/\sqrt{2}$ by 12.6 standard deviations. In addition, experimental observations have revealed a linear correlation between the non-locality demonstrated in EPR steering and the work done by the demon. Considering the errors in practical operation, the experimental results are highly consistent with theoretical predictions. Our findings not only suggest the presence of a Maxwell demon loophole in the EPR steering, but also contribute to a deeper comprehension of the interplay between quantum correlation, information theory, and thermodynamics., Comment: Comments are welcome!

Characterizing the nature of hydrodynamical transport properties in quantum dynamics provides valuable insights into the fundamental understanding of exotic non-equilibrium phases of matter. Experimentally simulating infinite-temperature transport on large-scale complex quantum systems is of considerable interest. Here, using a controllable and coherent superconducting quantum simulator, we experimentally realize the analog quantum circuit, which can efficiently prepare the Haar-random states, and probe spin transport at infinite temperature. We observe diffusive spin transport during the unitary evolution of the ladder-type quantum simulator with ergodic dynamics. Moreover, we explore the transport properties of the systems subjected to strong disorder or a tilted potential, revealing signatures of anomalous subdiffusion in accompany with the breakdown of thermalization. Quantum metrology has emerged as a promising avenue for surpassing the limitations of classical mechanics in high-precision measurements. However, the practical implementation of quantum metrology is hindered by the challenges of manipulating exotic quantum states in large systems. Here, we propose and demonstrate a hardware-efficient approach to achieve Heisenberg-limited quantum metrology using large photon-number Fock states. We have developed a programmable photon number filter that efficiently generates Fock states with up to 100 photons in a high-quality superconducting microwave cavity. Using these highly nontrivial states in displacement and phase measurements, we demonstrate a precision scaling close to the Heisenberg limit and achieve a maximum metrological gain of up to 14.8 dB. Quantum computation architecture based on $d$-level systems, or qudits, has attracted considerable attention recently due to their enlarged Hilbert space. Extensive theoretical and experimental studies have addressed aspects of algorithms and benchmarking techniques for qudit-based quantum computation and quantum information processing. Here, we report a physical realization of qudit with upto 4 embedded levels in a superconducting transmon, demonstrating high-fidelity initialization, manipulation, and simultaneous multi-level readout. In addition to constructing SU($d$) operations and benchmarking protocols for quantum state tomography, quantum process tomography, and randomized benchmarking etc, we experimentally carry out these operations for $d=3$ and $d=4$. Moreover, we perform prototypical quantum algorithms and observe outcomes consistent with expectations. Entanglement represents one of the most important conceptual advances in physics during the last century and is also one of the most essential resources in quantum information science. However, entanglement is fragile and its potential advantages in applications are hindered by decoherence in practice. Here, we experimentally realize entangled logical qubits (ELQ) with a bosonic quantum module by encoding quantum information into spatially separated microwave modes. The entanglement is protected by repetitive quantum error correction, and the coherence time of the purified ELQ via error detection is improved by 45$\%$ compared with the unprotected ELQ and exceeds that of the entangled physical qubits. In addition, violation of the Bell inequality by logical qubits is demonstrated for the first time with the measured Bell signal B=2.250$\pm$0.019 after purification, surpassing the classical bound by 13 standard deviations. Implementing arbitrary single-qubit gates with near perfect fidelity is among the most fundamental requirements in gate-based quantum information processing. In this work, we fabric a transmon qubit with long coherence times and demonstrate single-qubit gates with the average gate error below $10^{-4}$, i.e. $(7.42\pm0.04)\times10^{-5}$ by randomized benchmarking (RB). To understand the error sources, we experimentally obtain an error budget, consisting of the decoherence errors lower bounded by $(4.62\pm0.04)\times10^{-5}$ and the leakage rate per gate of $(1.16\pm0.04)\times10^{-5}$. Moreover, we reconstruct the process matrices for the single-qubit gates by the gate set tomography (GST), with which we simulate RB sequences and obtain single-qubit fedlities consistent with experimental results. We also observe non-Markovian behavior in the experiment of long-sequence GST, which may provide guidance for further calibration. The demonstration extends the upper limit that the average fidelity of single-qubit gates can reach in a transmon-qubit system, and thus can be an essential step towards practical and reliable quantum computation in the near future.

We explore the topology-disorder phase diagram by simulating one-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model with quasiperiodic disorder using a programmable superconducting simulator. We experimentally map out and identify various trivial and topological phases with extended and localized bulk states. We find that in the topological phase the bulk states can be critically localized without mobility edge or contain both critically and completely localized states. In addition, there exist trivial and topological intermediate phases with mobility edge and coexistence of extended and completely localized states. The presence of the surprisingly rich phases in the simple SSH model with quasiperiodic disorder sheds new light on the investigation of the topological and localization phenomena in condensed-matter physics., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Nonreciprocal elements, such as isolators and circulators, play an important role in classical and quantum information processing. Recently, strong nonreciprocal effects have been experimentally demonstrated in cavity optomechanical systems. In these approaches, the bandwidth of the nonreciprocal photon transmission is limited by the mechanical resonator linewidth, which is arguably much smaller than the linewidths of the cavity modes in most electromechanical or optomechanical devices. In this work, we demonstrate broadband nonreciprocal photon transmission in the \emph{reversed-dissipation} regime, where the mechanical mode with a large decay rate can be adiabatically eliminated while mediating anti-$\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric dissipative coupling with two kinds of phase factors. Adjusting the relative phases allows the observation of \emph{periodic} Riemann-sheet structures with distributed exceptional points (Eps). At the Eps, destructive quantum interference breaks both the $\mathcal{T}$- and $\mathcal{P}$-inversion symmetry, resulting in unidirectional and chiral photon transmissions. In the reversed-dissipation regime, the nonreciprocal bandwidth is no longer limited by the mechanical mode linewidth but is improved to the linewidth of the cavity resonance. Furthermore, we find that the direction of the unidirectional and chiral energy transfer could be reversed by changing the \emph{parity} of the Eps. Extending non-Hermitian couplings to a three-cavity model, the broken anti-$\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry allows us to observe high-order Eps, at which a parity-dependent chiral circulator is demonstrated. The driving-phase controlled periodical Riemann sheets allow observation of the parity-dependent unidirectional and chiral energy transfer and thus provide a useful cell for building up nonreciprocal array and realizing topological, e.g., isolators, circulators, or amplifiers., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures

Quantum error correction (QEC) aims to protect logical qubits from noises by utilizing the redundancy of a large Hilbert space, where an error, once it occurs, can be detected and corrected in real time. In most QEC codes, a logical qubit is encoded in some discrete variables, e.g., photon numbers. Such encoding schemes make the codewords orthogonal, so that the encoded quantum information can be unambiguously extracted after processing. Based on such discrete-variable encodings, repetitive QEC demonstrations have been reported on various platforms, but there the lifetime of the encoded logical qubit is still shorter than that of the best available physical qubit in the entire system, which represents a break-even point that needs to be surpassed for any QEC code to be of practical use. Here we demonstrate a QEC procedure with a logical qubit encoded in photon-number states of a microwave cavity, dispersively coupled to an ancilla superconducting qubit. By applying a pulse featuring a tailored frequency comb to the ancilla, we can repetitively extract the error syndrome with high fidelity and perform error correction with feedback control accordingly, thereby exceeding the break-even point by about 16% lifetime enhancement. Accurate control of qubits is the central requirement for building functional quantum processors. For the current superconducting quantum processor, high-fidelity control of qubits is mainly based on independently calibrated microwave pulses, which could differ from each other in frequencies, amplitudes, and phases. With this control strategy, the needed physical source could be challenging, especially when scaling up to large-scale quantum processors is considered. Inspired by Kane's proposal for spin-based quantum computing, here, we explore theoretically the possibility of baseband flux control of superconducting qubits with only shared and always-on microwave drives. In our strategy, qubits are by default far detuned from the drive during system idle periods, qubit readout and baseband flux-controlled two-qubit gates can thus be realized with minimal impacts from the always-on drive. By contrast, during working periods, qubits are tuned on resonance with the drive and single-qubit gates can be realized. Therefore, universal qubit control can be achieved with only baseband flux pulses and always-on shared microwave drives. We apply this strategy to the qubit architecture where tunable qubits are coupled via a tunable coupler, and the analysis shows that high-fidelity qubit control is possible. Besides, the baseband control strategy needs fewer physical resources, such as control electronics and cooling power in cryogenic systems, than that of microwave control. More importantly, the flexibility of baseband flux control could be employed for addressing the non-uniformity issue of superconducting qubits, potentially allowing the realization of multiplexing and cross-bar technologies and thus controlling large numbers of qubits with fewer control lines. To generate arbitrary one- and two-qubit gates, the universal decompositions are usually used in quantum computing, and the universality of these decompositions has been demonstrated. However, in realistic experiments, gate errors may affect the universality of the universal decompositions. Here, we focus on the single-qubit-gate decomposition scheme and study the coherent-error effects on universality. We prove that, in the parameter space which we studied, some kinds of coherent errors will not affect the original universality, but some others will destroy it. We provide the definition and analytical solutions for universality with coherent errors and propose methods to resume the accuracy of the operations with coherent errors based on our analysis. We also give the analytical results for three kinds of fidelities, which provide another metric for universality and comprehensively depict the resilience of the decomposition scheme with various kinds of coherent errors. Our work introduces a different way of thinking for quantum compilation than existing methods.

The quantum Hall effect, fundamental in modern condensed matter physics, continuously inspires new theories and predicts emergent phases of matter. Here we experimentally demonstrate three types of Chern insulators with synthetic dimensions on a programable 30-qubit-ladder superconducting processor. We directly measure the band structures of the 2D Chern insulator along synthetic dimensions with various configurations of Aubry-Andr\'e-Harper chains and observe dynamical localisation of edge excitations. With these two signatures of topology, our experiments implement the bulk-edge correspondence in the synthetic 2D Chern insulator. Moreover, we simulate two different bilayer Chern insulators on the ladder-type superconducting processor. With the same and opposite periodically modulated on-site potentials for two coupled chains, we simulate topologically nontrivial edge states with zero Hall conductivity and a Chern insulator with higher Chern numbers, respectively. Improving gate performance is vital for scalable quantum computing. The universal quantum computing also requires the gate fidelity to reach a high level. For superconducting quantum processor, which operates in the microwave band, the single-qubit gates are usually realized with microwave driving. The crosstalk between microwave pulses is a non-negligible error source. In this article, we propose an error mitigation scheme to address this crosstalk issue for single-qubit gates. There are three steps in our method. First, by controlling the detuning between qubits, the microwave induced classical crosstalk error can be constrained within the computational subspace. Second, by applying the general decomposition procedure, arbitrary single-qubit gate can be decomposed as a sequence of $\sqrt{X}$ and virtual Z gates. Finally, by optimizing the parameters in virtual Z gates, the error constrained in the computational space can be corrected. Using our method, no additional compensation signals are needed, arbitrary single-qubit gate time will not be prolonged, and the circuit depth containing simultaneous single-qubit gates will also not increase. The simulation results show that, in specific regime of qubit-qubit detuning, the infidelities of simultaneous single-qubit gates can be as low as which without microwave crosstalk.

Crosstalk is a major concern in the implementation of large-scale quantum computation since it can degrade the performance of qubit addressing and cause gate errors. Finding the origin of crosstalk and separating contributions from different channels are essential prerequisites for figuring out crosstalk mitigation schemes. Here, by performing circuit analysis of two coupled floating transmon qubits, we demonstrate that, even if the stray coupling, e.g., between a qubit and the drive line of its nearby qubit, is absent, microwave crosstalk between qubits can still exist due to the presence of a spurious crosstalk channel. This channel arises from free modes, which are supported by the floating structure of transmon qubits, i.e., the two superconducting islands of each qubit with no galvanic connection to the ground. For various geometric layouts of floating transmon qubits, we give the contributions of microwave crosstalk from the spurious channel and show that this channel can become a performance-limiting factor in qubit addressing. With the long coherence time, the fixed-frequency transmon qubit is a promising qubit modality for quantum computing. Currently, diverse qubit architectures that utilize fixed-frequency transmon qubits have been demonstrated with high-fidelity gate performance. Nevertheless, the relaxation times of transmon qubits can have large temporal fluctuations, causing instabilities in gate performance. The fluctuations are often believed to be caused by nearly on-resonance couplings with sparse two-level-system (TLS) defects. To mitigate their impact on qubit coherence and gate performance, one direct approach is to tune the qubits away from these TLSs. In this work, to combat the potential TLS-induced performance fluctuations in a tunable-bus architecture unitizing fixed-frequency transmon qubits, we explore the possibility of using an off-resonance microwave drive to effectively tuning the qubit frequency through the ac-Stark shift while implementing universal gate operations on the microwave-dressed qubit. We show that the qubit frequency can be tuned up to 20 MHz through the ac-stark shift while keeping minimal impacts on the qubit control. Besides passive approaches that aim to remove these TLSs through more careful treatments of device fabrications, this work may offer an active approach towards mitigating the TLS-induced performance fluctuations in fixed-frequency transmon qubit devices., Comment: 12 pages,9 figures

Besides striving to assemble more and more qubits in a single monolithic quantum device, taking a modular design strategy may mitigate numerous engineering challenges for achieving large-scalable quantum processors with superconducting qubits. Nevertheless, a major challenge in the modular quantum device is how to realize high-fidelity entanglement operations on qubits housed in different modules while preserving the desired isolation between modules. In this work, we propose a conceptual design of a modular quantum device, where nearby modules are spatially separated by centimeters. In principle, each module can contain tens of superconducting qubits, and can be separately fabricated, characterized, packaged, and replaced. By introducing a bridge module between nearby qubit modules and taking the coupling scheme utilizing a tunable bus, tunable coupling of qubits that are housed in nearby qubit modules, could be realized. Given physically reasonable assumptions, we expect that sub-100-ns two-qubit gates for qubits housed in nearby modules which are spatially separated by more than two centimeters could be obtained. In this way, the inter-module gate operations are promising to be implemented with gate performance comparable with that of intra-module gate operations. Moreover, with help of through-silicon vias technologies, this long-range coupling scheme may also allow one to implement inter-module couplers in a multi-chip stacked processor. Thus, the tunable longer-range coupling scheme and the proposed modular architecture may provide a promising foundation for solving challenges toward large-scale quantum information processing with superconducting qubits., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

Variational quantum algorithms (VQAs) have shown strong evidences to gain provable computational advantages for diverse fields such as finance, machine learning, and chemistry. However, the heuristic ansatz exploited in modern VQAs is incapable of balancing the tradeoff between expressivity and trainability, which may lead to the degraded performance when executed on the noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) machines. To address this issue, here we demonstrate the first proof-of-principle experiment of applying an efficient automatic ansatz design technique, i.e., quantum architecture search (QAS), to enhance VQAs on an 8-qubit superconducting quantum processor. In particular, we apply QAS to tailor the hardware-efficient ansatz towards classification tasks. Compared with the heuristic ansatze, the ansatz designed by QAS improves test accuracy from 31% to 98%. We further explain this superior performance by visualizing the loss landscape and analyzing effective parameters of all ansatze. Our work provides concrete guidance for developing variable ansatze to tackle various large-scale quantum learning problems with advantages.
