The spectral wave model WAM (Cycle 6) is a commonly used code package for ocean wave forecasting. However, it is still a challenge to include it into the long-term Earth system modeling due to the huge computing requirement. In this study, we have successfully developed a GPU-accelerated version of the WAM model that can run all its computing-demanding components on GPUs, with a significant performance increase compared with its original CPU version. The power of GPU computing has been unleashed through substantial efforts of code refactoring, which reduces the computing time of a 7 d global 1/10 ° wave modeling to only 7.6 min in a single-node server installed with eight NVIDIA A100 GPUs. Speedup comparisons exhibit that running the WAM6 with eight cards can achieve the maximum speedup ratio of 37 over the dual-socket CPU node with two Intel Xeon 6236 CPUs. The study provides an approach to energy-efficient computing for ocean wave modeling. A preliminary evaluation suggests that approximately 90 % of power can be saved. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Drownings due to rip currents are a major threat to beach safety. In this study a high-resolution Boussinesq model with a modified wave-resolving Lagrangian tracking module has been applied to a 2 km long embayed beach, Dadonghai of Sanya, Hainan Island, with the purpose of studying rip current variability, real-time rip hazard identification, and the optimal swimmer escape strategies. The beach stage evolves periodically at the study site and plays an important role in the long-term modulation of the occurrence and strength of rip currents according to the modeling. A series of tests are designed and confirm that rip current strength is closely related to wave properties and tidal levels. Spectral analysis of output time series at specific points shows that the modeled rip currents fluctuate on the orders of 1 and 10 min, which suggests the effects of wave-group-forced infragravity (IG) and very-low-frequency (VLF) motions. Rip hazard levels are defined by combining rip strength and its duration. An attempt to use the GPU-accelerated FUNWAVE-TVD (Total Variation Diminishing version of the Fully Nonlinear Boussinesq Wave Model) embedded with the spectral wave model WAM6-GPU (GPU version of the third-generation spectral wave model WAM Cycle 6) exhibits its capability to evaluate rip hazard levels in real time. One of the differences of the present study from previous works is that the random, wave-resolving tracking of virtual swimmers is performed with 1 m resolution to study beach safety strategies. The results demonstrate that multiple factors contribute to the survival of swimmers caught in the rip currents, including surf-zone bathymetry, rip strength, fine-scale flow patterns, the bather's position, and swimming ability. For weak-to-moderate rip currents and longshore currents, swim onshore consistently seems to be the most successful strategy across all the scenarios in this study. Higher surf-zone exit rates along Dadonghai beach are not favorable for stay afloat action, which puts swimmers at a higher risk of being expelled to deeper water. A fiber optic interferometric seismic monitoring system developed by us was deployed on the shallow seafloor near the Wuchang oceanic monitoring station off the Hainan Island, in the South China Sea, in 2017. In the past three plus years, it has recorded more than 40 teleseismic activities of magnitude 6.0+. We analyze these shallow seafloor observed seismic signals monitored by the fiber optic interferometric three-component accelerometer from the perspective of analyzing the underwater ambient seismic noise and the attenuation of the noise in the shallow seafloor seismic signals. The ambient seismic noise produced by wind, wave, shipping, and on-shore manmade activities admixed in the seismic signal is analyzed and discussed in detail. And the attenuation of such noise in the shallow seafloor seismic data using a hybrid denoising algorithm is demonstrated by applying it to three representative seismic events having different distances and magnitudes, with results showing that the noise in the shallow seafloor seismic signal is effectively reduced, and the ratio of the maximum acceleration value of seismic wave to the noise level is improved by more than 32 dB, rendering the seismic waves clearly observable. At 14:34 Beijing time on February 27, 2010, an earthquake of Mw 8.8 rocked the central coast of Chile. A teletsunami was triggered by the huge earthquake and then propagated across the entire Pacific in less than 24 h. The initial tsunami wave arrived at the southeast coast of China at 16:20 on February 28 and was recorded in real time by a number of tidal gauges off mainland China and Taiwan Province. The teletsunami waves have never been recorded with such a broad geographical scope in China before this event. The aim of the present work is to report the first description of sea-level oscillations generated by the Chile tsunami, and evaluate the potential hazards that teletsunami poses to the coast of China. The results reveal that the east coast of Taiwan Province, Zhejiang Province and the north coast of Fujian Province are vulnerable to transoceanic tsunami. In addition, spectral and wavelet analysis of the recorded sea-level oscillations shows that "seiches" are easily excited by the resonance resulting from the interaction between the initial tsunami waves and local geometry (such as semi-enclosed bays and ports).
