2. Evaluating the Efficacy of the Male Annihilation Technique in Managing Oriental Fruit Fly (Diptera: Tephritidae) Populations through Microscopic Assessment of Female Spermathecae.

Abstract

Simple Summary: Bactrocera dorsalis (Hendel) is a notorious horticultural pest. The male annihilation technique (MAT) is a key strategy in the pest management program of B. dorsalis. However, there is currently no method to monitor the effectiveness of MAT in real time. In this study, it was discovered under a microscope that sperms can be detected in the spermathecae and the ventral receptacle of mated B. dorsalis females. Furthermore, sperms are more easily observed in the spermathecae and can be retained there for more than 50 days. Field investigations demonstrated that the proportion of mated females was less than 81.2% in an abandoned mango orchard, while it was reduced to less than 36.4% in another mango orchard where MAT was applied. This indicates that dissecting the spermathecae to observe the presence of sperms is a reliable method to accurately monitor the proportion of mated B. dorsalis females in the fields. This method can be used in real time and accurately assess the control efficiency of MAT in B. dorsalis management. The male annihilation technique (MAT) plays a crucial role in the pest management program of the oriental fruit fly, Bactrocera dorsalis (Hendel) (Diptera: Tephritidae). However, a suitable method for real-time and accurate assessment of MAT's control efficiency has not been established. Laboratory investigations found that motile sperms can be observed clearly under the microscope when the spermathecae dissected from mated females were torn, and no sperms were found in the spermathecae of virgin females. Furthermore, it was confirmed that sperms can be preserved in the spermathecae for more than 50 days once females have mated. Laboratory results also indicated that proportion of mated females decreased from 100% to 2% when the sex ratio (♀:♂) was increased from 1:1 to 100:1. Further observation revealed that there were no significant differences in the superficial area of the ovary or spermatheca between mated females and virgin females. Field investigations revealed that the proportion of mated females (PMF) could reach 81.2% in abandoned mango orchards, whereas the PMF was less than 36.4% in mango orchards where MAT was applied. This indicates that the PMF of the field population can be determined by examining the presence of sperms in the spermathecae. Abstract

This paper presents how a hydraulic system can be properly modeled for hydraulic balancing, knowledge of flow distribution, coupled simulation, and evaluation of control, etc. It focuses on water-based heating and cooling systems, which generally have high energy efficiency in design but could perform poorly in reality due to the undersensing condition and strong thermal-hydraulic coupling. The study introduces the motivation, presents the simplified modeling methodology, and illustrates the model and simulating structure. A preliminary evaluation of the method is conducted with two simple simulations. The proposed “node-branch-state” modeling approach could be easily modified, expanded and integrated into a detailed thermal model. The paper concludes with some discussions on future work.

19. A feasibility study of a two-stage renewable energy harvester using rapid waste bio-degradation technologies

Abstract

Waste-based biomass energy using bio-degradation technologies is a critical solution for both energy harvesting and biomass waste recycling. It has no region restriction and can potentially supply affordable energy for human development. It is an environmentally- and ecologically- friendly renewable energy technology minimizing environmental effects, conserving landfill space, and delivering bio-fuels and organic fertilizers. Primary and secondary costs are low and can be further reduced if the bio-degradation rate can be raised. This study proposes an innovative, two-step renewable energy harvester using rapid waste bio-degradation technologies. The renewable energy harvester has two stages. Stage 1 is a fast biomass waste aerobic degradation system for generating bio-heat energy and effectively pretreating biomass feedstock to readily anaerobically biodegradable products. Stage 2 is a fast biomass waste anaerobic degradation system using the residuals from stage 1 for rapidly producing biogas energy and fertilizers. Laboratory feasibility testing shows that: 1) stage 1 can obtain a sustainable heat recovery rate of 15.0-18.2 W/kg and about 50-90% of energy can be reclaimed in about 4-6 days, 2) stage 2 can obtain an optimal 1.6-1.8 L of biogas production per L of wet biomass waste every day; 25-35% of energy contained in the aerobically pretreated wet biomass mixture can be recovered in 8-12 days. In total, with the combination of fast aerobic and anaerobic bio-degradation processes, the majority of biomass energy can be reclaimed in around two weeks. It is 5-10 times faster than that of traditional bio-degradation technologies. 26. A VIRTUAL SUPPLY AIRFLOW RATE METER IN ROOFTOP AIR CONDITIONING UNITS

Abstract

Virtual sensing technology aims to estimate difficult to measure, expensive, or new quantities by using multifarious mathematical models along with non-invasive and low-cost measurements. Such embedded intelligence is a key to improving the performance of building systems in terms of functionality, safety, energy efficiency, environmental impacts, and costs.  Considering the progress that has been achieved over many various fields (e.g., process controls, automobiles, avionics, autonomous  robots, telemedicine) within the last two decades, numerous intelligent features have been incorporated and enabled that would otherwise not be possible or economical. To identify the potential opportunities and research/development needs of virtual sensing technology in building systems, First, this thesis reviews the major milestones of virtual sensing development in other emerging fields and its formulation of development methodologies.  Second, the state-of-the-art in virtual sensing technology in building systems is summarized as a starting point for its future developments and applications. After that, a cost-effective virtual supply airflow (SCFM ) meter for rooftop air-conditioning units (RTUs)  is created by using a first-principle model in combination with accurate measurements of virtual or virtually calibrated temperature sensors (a virtual mixed air temperature sensor and a virtually calibrated supply air temperature sensor) as a supplementary example. Modeling of the virtual meter, uncertainty analysis, and experimental evaluation are performed through a wide range of laboratory testing in the development.  The study reveals that the first-principle based virtual SCFM meter could accurately predict SCFM values for RTUs (uncertainty is ± 6.9%). This innovative application is promising with a number of merits, such as high cost-effectiveness, ease-of-implementation, long-term availability after one-time development, and generic characteristics for all RTUs with gas heating. Significant research and developments are needed before virtual sensors become commonplace within buildings. It is believed a wealth of virtual sensing derived applications would facilitate the sustainable management and optimize the advanced controls in building systems.  It is hoped that this study can provide a resource for future developments.
