Matrix-isolation infrared spectroscopy is used to investigate the reactions of laser-ablated lanthanum and yttrium atoms with carbon monoxide molecules in solid neon. The results have revealed that the C-O stretching vibrational frequencies of MC[O.sup.+] decrease from Sc to La, thus indicating an increase in metal d orbital -> Co [pi]* back-donation in this series.

Fast pulse-driven spin-wave excitations in magnetic films are studied experimentally and theoretically. The experiment is conducted on a low loss yttrium iron garnet thin-film strip with separate microstrip lines for excitation and detection.

A series of quasimultilayers of YBa2Cu3O(sub 7-delta)(YBCO)/Y2O3 were prepared on single-crystal SrTiO3 using pulsed-laser deposition. The structural and flux pinning properties are investigated and a series of sample is explicitly compared with different Y2O3 doping contents.

First-principles quantum simulations complemented with kinetic Monte Carlo calculations are performed to understand the oxygen vacancy diffusion mechanism and the effect of dopant composition on ionic conductivity in yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ). The analysis shows that this method can be used to predict ionic conductivity in different types of electrolytes to find optimum dopant concentrations.

A study was conducted to investigate the reactivity of yttrium atom towards ammonia at room temperature in a fast-flow reactor. The molecular orbital analysis indicated that ammonia molecules were ligated to the positive end of the large dipole of YNH through dipole-dipole interactions and dative bond formations.

First principles study is used for examining the atomic structure, adhesion energy, and bonding nature of the Y[Ba.sub.2][Cu.sub.3][O.sub.7](001)/SrTi[O.sub.3](001) interface. The effect of substrate on the optimal SrO-terminated interface is twofold and the substrate has affected the interface chemistry via tuning the first monolayer of the Y[Ba.sub.2][Cu.sub.3][O.sub.7] film.

The magnetic properties of the yttrium iron garnet films that deposited and annealed at different atmospheres are examined. The results have shown that the magnetic properties of yttrium iron garnet films prepared by rf magnetron sputtering method is tuned with oxygen partial pressure in sputtering and annealing processes.

A study of the damage production in yttria-stabilized cubic zirconia single crystals irradiated with swift heavy ions is presented. The damage results from the formation of tracks due to the huge electronic excitations induced in the wake of incident ions might be usd to predict the damage evolution in other nonamorphizable ceramics irradiated with swift heavy ions.

The electronic structures and magnetic properties of [Gd.sub.5-x][Y.sub.x]T[tsub.4] (Tt = Si or Ge) series are investigated by using crystallographic study. A partially ordered arrangement of Gadolinium and Yttrium atoms is observed.

Hydrated trivalent rare earth metal ions containing yttrium and naturally abundant lanthanide metals are formed by using electrospray ionization and the structures and reactivities of these ions containing water molecules are studied by using blackbody infrared radiative dissociation (BIRD) and infrared action spectroscopy. The results have shown that ions that are weak acids in bulk solution might have greater propensities to hydrolyze water and biomolecules in environments that lack extended hydrogen bond networks and/or neighboring counterions.

The intermolecular interactions taking place between compounds of the TIBO family and Y181 (C181), K101, and Y188 amino acids are investigated. The natural bond orbital (NBO) and atoms in molecules (AIM) methods indicate that not only does the Y181C mutation lead to loss of favorable interactions between the TIBO side chains and tyrosine, but it also affects the interaction between the inhibitor and K101 and Y188.

Reactions of laser-ablated scandium and yttrium atoms with dilute carbon monoxide molecules in solid argon are investigated using matrix-isolation infrared spectroscopy. The CO activation mechanism is discussed and it stated that density functional theory calculations of the geometry structures, vibrational frequencies, and IR intensities strongly support the assignments.

The spectroscopic characteristics of potassium yttrium tungstate crystal (KYW), codoped with ytterbium and thulium ions, are investigated from the point of view of up-conversion blue lasing from (super 1)G4 multiplet. An overall (super 3)H6 multiplet splitting of ~530 cm(super -1) for the trivalent thulium ion in the KYW host was obtained.
