Predictive models accounting for the effect of bioturbation on sediment resuspension must be based on ecological theory as well as on empirical parametrizations. The scaling trend of individual metabolic and activity rates with body mass may be a key to the mechanistic understanding of the observed patterns. With this study we tested if general size scaling rules in bio-mediated sediment resuspension may apply to a broad range of physical contexts. To this end, we performed factorial flume experiments by using Cerastoderma edule as model organisms. The effect on sediment resuspension of populations of C. edule differing by individual size was measured across physical gradients of current velocity and sediment composition in terms of fraction of fine particles. C. edule were able to enhance the resuspension of sediment containing silt, while they had scarce effect on the resuspension of coarse sediment. The effect of bioturbation was maximal at intermediate current velocity, when the hydrodynamic forcing is not strong enough to overcome the abiotic sediment resistance but it is able to suspend the bioturbated sediment. Although differences in sediment silt content and intensities of hydrodynamic stress have a relevant influence in determining the bioturbators individual contribution to sediment resuspension, the observed mass scaling trend is consistent across all treatments and close to theoretical expectation for size scaling of individual metabolic rates. This observation supports the hypothesis that the contribution of individual bioturbators to sediment resuspension is directly related to their energy requirements. Therefore, the proposed approach allows the formulation of expectations of biotic contribution to sediment resuspension based on the general size scaling laws of individual energy use.

The intensity of marine heatwaves is increasing due to climate change. Heatwaves may affect macroinvertebrates' bioturbating behavior in intertidal areas, thereby altering the deposition-erosion balance at tidal flats. Moreover, small-scale topographic features on tidal flats can create tidal pools during the low tide, thus changing the heat capacity of tidal flats. These pools could then potentially operate as refuge environments during marine heatwaves. We studied behavior responses to heat waves using the well-known bioturbating cockle Cerastoderma edule as a model species. Different temperature regimes (i.e., fluctuating between 20 and 40 °C) and micro-topographies (i.e., presence vs. absence of tidal water pools) were mimicked in a mesocosm experiment with regular tidal regimes. Our results demonstrate that behavioral responses to heat stress strongly depend on the site-specific morphological features. Cockles covered by shallow water pools moved up when exposed to thermal stress, while burrowing deeper into the sediment in the absence of water pools. But in both cases, their migratory behavior increased under heat stress compared to regular ambient treatments. Moreover, long-term cumulative heat stress increased cockles' respiration rates and decreased their health conditions, causing mass mortality after four weeks of gradually increasing heat exposure. Overall, the present findings provide the first insights into how bioturbating behavior on tidal flats may change in response to global warming.

De Oosterschelde is één van de 21 nationale parken van Nederland en is omwille van zijn biologische rijkdom aangewezen als Natura 2000-gebied. Tevens is het een belangrijk leefgebied voor veel soorten kustbroedvogels, moerasbroedvogels en doortrekkende en overwinterende watervogels. Daarom vormt het ook onderdeel van het Europese netwerk van beschermde natuurgebieden. Hiermee heeft de Nederlandse overheid onder andere de verantwoordelijkheid om de natuurgebieden binnen de Oosterschelde te behouden, te herstellen en eventueel te vergroten. Bovendien gelden voor elk Natura-2000-gebied een aantal specifieke instandhoudingsdoelen die bijvoorbeeld aangeven welke leefgebieden en welke soorten (plant en dier) behouden of hersteld moeten worden. Het Beheerplan Deltawateren beschrijft vervolgens welke maatregelen nodig zijn om de overeenkomstige instandhoudingsdoelen te realiseren. De aanleg van de stormvloedkering in de Oosterschelde heeft onder andere in een kleiner getijverschil daarachter geresulteerd. Dit heeft tot de zogenaamde ‘zandhonger’ geleid, wat een afname van het oppervlakte van rust- en foerageergebied voor vogels en/of een verlaging van het voorland heeft veroorzaakt. Hiervoor zijn suppleties een van de mogelijke oplossingen. Door TenneT wordt een 380 kV-verbinding aangelegd tussen Borssele en Rilland. Omdat er een deel buitendijks wordt aangelegd in het Natura 2000-gebied in de Oosterschelde moet er worden gecompenseerd voor het verlies aan intergetijdenatuur. TenneT heeft middelen beschikbaar gesteld aan Natuurmonumenten om een natuurimpuls te geven aan de Oosterschelde voor de schade die deze kabel mogelijk berokkent aan de buitendijkse natuur. Natuurmonumenten wil, in samenwerking met Rijkswaterstaat, onderzoeken of er natuurwinst is te behalen in de Kom van de Oosterschelde door natuurherstelmaatregelen. Eén van de uitgangspunten hierbij was om te onderzoeken of gebruik kan worden gemaakt van het slibrijk sediment dat in oktober 2021 zou vrijkomen bij onderhoudsbaggerwerkzaamheden die zijn uitgevoerd aan de vaargeul in de Zandkreek. Dit opgebaggerde sediment wordt normaliter in diepe putten in de Oosterschelde gedumpt, maar zou mogelijk ook nuttig benut kunnen worden in het systeem, bijvoorbeeld ten behoeve van natuurbouw ter bestrijding van de negatieve effecten van de zandhonger in de Oosterschelde (‘werk met werk’). Dit onderzoek is mede mogelijk gemaakt door de Provincie Zeeland, op verzoek van Natuurmonumenten, vanwege de mogelijkheid om dit slib te gebruiken om platen op te hogen omwille van plaatbehoud voor foeragerende en rustende vogels en voor schorren en slikken. Dit is in het belang voor het behoud van Natura 2000-gebieden. Het doel van dit project is om antwoord te kunnen geven op de vraag of, middels een suppletie van slibrijkmateriaal op een locatie in de Rattekaai, het intergetijdengebied van het Verdronken land van Zuid-Beveland verbeterd kan worden. Daarnaast moet de monitoring en het onderzoek ook kennis ontwikkelen over het suppleren met slibrijkmateriaal. Hiervoor is het belangrijk om eerst de nul-situatie van het suppletiegebied goed in kaart te brengen. Vanwege logistieke problemen heeft het suppletieproject echter geen doorgang kunnen vinden. In overleg met Rijkswaterstaat en Provincie Zeeland is daarom afgesproken om de data verzameld voorafgaand aan de geplande suppletie te ontsluiten in een rapport en een advies te geven over het eventuele gebruik van deze data. Hoewel er waarschijnlijk geen vervolgmonitoring zal plaatsvinden op deze specifieke locatie kan de informatie mogelijk worden gebruikt voor toekomstige projecten, bijvoorbeeld in de nabijgelegen gebieden of met dezelfde type ingrepen welke onder vergelijkbare omstandigheden worden uitgevoerd. Ook kan de toepasbaarheid en effectiviteit van dit soort maatregelen worden onderzocht. In dit rapport worden deze T0-resultaten op een rij gezet op basis van twee meetcampagnes (najaar 2020 en 2021). Deze studie is uitgevoerd door Wageningen Marine Research in samenwerking met NIOZ en Deltares. De rapportage is mede tot stand gekomen dankzij input van verschillende experts van de betrokken kennisinstellingen. Van de twee T0-metingen (najaar 2020 en 2021) zijn de verschillen tussen de jaren groter dan de verschillen tussen suppletie- en referentiegebieden. Het aantal soorten is vergelijkbaar, maar de soortenrijkdom is iets minder in 2021 terwijl de dichtheid en biomassa zijn toegenomen. Verder zijn er geen duidelijke verschillen tussen de suppletie- en referentiegebieden waarneembaar wat betreft de abiotische bodemeigenschappen. Dat onderschrijft nogmaals dat de twee gekozen gebieden uitstekend dienst zouden doen als vergelijking. Het is moeilijk vast te stellen in hoeverre de verschillen in de bodemdierengemeenschap en een aantal abiotische bodemeigenschappen te wijten zijn aan natuurlijke (ruimtelijk of tijdelijk) variabiliteit, of het van jaar tot jaar zo zou variëren en met welke parameters dit het meest gecorreleerd is. De metingen van de dynamiek van golven en vooral de sedimentdynamiek geven aan dat dit gebied laagdynamisch is. Vanwege deze lage dynamiek kan worden verwacht dat een slibsuppletie lang op de gewenste plek zou kunnen blijven liggen. Daardoor zouden de natuurwaarden mogelijk over langere tijd profiteren van een dergelijke ingreep. Maar voorzichtigheid is geboden omdat morfologische veranderingen mogelijk gedreven worden door stormen die niet-frequent voorkomen. In tegenstelling tot eerdere suppleties in de Oosterschelde (Galgenplaat, Schelphoek, Roggenplaat en Oesterdam) was het plan bij Rattekaai om een suppletie uit te voeren met slibrijk materiaal. Uit eerdere (zand)suppleties is gebleken dat het herstel van de bodemdierengemeenschap (benthos) enkele jaren duurt. Een suppletie met slibrijk materiaal kan mogelijk tot andere ontwikkelingen leiden, wat de bodemdierengemeenschap en andere abiotische omstandigheden betreft. De aanpak van de monitoring binnen dit project is vergelijkbaar aan de monitoring bij andere suppleties (Roggenplaat en Oesterdam) waardoor de resultaten goed met elkaar kunnen worden vergeleken en mogelijk van nut zijn bij toekomstige suppleties, zoals de Galgenplaat.

Tidal flats are biogeomorphic landscapes, shaped by physical forces and interaction with benthic biota. We used a metabolic approach to assess the overarching effect of bioturbators on tidal landscapes. The benthic bivalve common cockle (Cerastoderma edule) was used as model organism. The effect of C. edule on sediment resuspension was approximated as a function of the overall population metabolic rate per unit of area. We combined i) laboratory observations on how C. edule affect sediment resuspension along gradients of bioturbation activity, sediment cohesiveness and hydrodynamic force with ii) spatial data on on the natural distribution of intertidal C. edule populations. This allowed us to build an integrated model of the C. edule effect on sediment resuspension along the tidal gradient. Owing to the temperature dependence of metabolic rate, the model also accounted for seasonal variation in bioturbators activity. Laboratory experiments indicated that sediment resuspension is positively related to the metabolic rate of the C. edule population especially in cohesive sediments. Based on this observation, we predicted a clear spatial and seasonal pattern in the relative importance of C. edule contribution to sediment resuspension along a tidal transect. At lower elevations, our model indicates that hydrodynamics overrules biotic effects; at higher elevations, inter-tidal hydrodynamics should be too low to suspend bioturbated sediments. The influence of C. edule on sediment resuspension is expected to be maximal at the intermediate elevation of a mudflat, owing to the combination of moderate hydrodynamic stress and high bioturbator activity. Also, bio-mediated sediment resuspension is predicted to be particularly high in the warm season. Research into metabolic dependency of bio-mediated sediment resuspension may help to place phenomenological observations in the broader framework of metabolic theories in ecology and to formulate general expectations on the coastal ecosystem functioning.

Use of mangrove ecosystems for coastal flood protection requires reliable predictions of mangrove wave attenuation, especially if this capacity lessens due to storm-induced forest damage. Quantifying and understanding the variation in drag forces and mechanical properties of mangrove vegetation can improve assessment of mangrove protective capacity. We studied five mangrove species common in the subtropical Pearl River Delta, south China. The studied species range from typically landward-occurring to more seaward-occurring pioneer species. We sampled across seven sites in the delta to study the impact of salinity on mechanical properties. We quantified strength and flexibility of branches (branch strength and flexibility related to branch diameter, modulus of rupture and modulus of elasticity), leaf strength (leaf attachment strength related to leaf size, and leaf mass per area) and drag properties (drag force related to surface area and drag coefficient). For all tested species, larger branch diameters resulted in higher mechanical strength. Larger leaf size resulted in larger peak pulling forces and larger branch surface area resulted in stronger drag forces. Notably, species that generally occur lower in the intertidal zone, where exposure to wind and waves is higher, had relatively stronger branches but more easily detachable leaves. This may be regarded as a damage-avoiding strategy. Across the seven field sites, we found no clear effect of salinity on mangrove mechanical properties. This study provides a mechanistic insight in the storm damage process for individual mangrove trees and a solid base for modeling storm (surge) damage at the forest scale.
