The present book is addressed to students and / or graduates of biomedical sciences and aims to introduce them to the basic principles of Laboratory Animal Science, provide them with specialized knowledge for managing a laboratory animal colony, as well as with special knowledge on biology, housing and care, non-surgical experimental procedures (handling, administration of substances, blood sampling), anesthesia and euthanasia of those laboratory animal species most commonly used in biomedical experimental research. The book is divided into the General and the Species-specific Section. The General Section (chapters 1-13) contains information regarding the use of animals in biomedical research and ethics of their use, alternative methods, the relevant legislation, the basic principles of breeding and manageming a laboratory animal colony, methods of substances’ administration and sampling of biologic materials, anesthesia, assessment and management of pain and distress, euthanasia, health monitoring and zoonoses. The Species-specific Section (chapters 14-24) contains information regarding the biology, breeding, handling, blood sampling, substances’ administration, anesthesia and euthanasia of the most commonly used laboratory animal species (mouse, rat, gerbil, hamster, guinea pig, rabbit, dog, cat, pig, non-human primates and fish)., Το παρόν βιβλίο απευθύνεται σε φοιτητές και/ή πτυχιούχους βιοϊατρικών επιστημών με κύριο σκοπό να τους εισάγει στις βασικές αρχές της Επιστήμης των Ζώων Εργαστηρίου, να τους παρέχει εξειδικευμένες γνώσεις απαραίτητες για τη διαχείριση μίας αποικίας ζώων εργαστηρίου, καθώς και πληροφορίες σχετικές με τη βιολογία, τις συνθήκες εκτροφής, μη-χειρουργικές πειραματικές διαδικασίες (σύλληψη - συγκράτηση, χορήγηση ουσιών, αιμοληψία), την αναισθησία και την ευθανασία των κυριότερων ειδών ζώων που χρησιμοποιούνται στην πειραματική βιοϊατρική έρευνα. Το σύγγραμμα χωρίζεται στο Γενικό και το Ειδικό Μέρος. Στο Γενικό Μέρος (κεφάλαια 1-13) παρέχονται πληροφορίες σχετικές με τη χρήση των ζώων στη βιοϊατρική έρευνα, τον κώδικα ηθικής και δεοντολογίας της χρήσης των ζώων για επιστημονικούς σκοπούς, τις εναλλακτικές μεθόδους πειραματισμού, τη νομοθεσία που διέπει τη χρήση ζώων για επιστημονικούς σκοπούς, τις βασικές αρχές εκτροφής και διαχείρισης μίας αποικίας ζώων εργαστηρίου, τις μεθόδους χορήγησης ουσιών και δειγματοληψίας βιολογικών υλικών, την αναισθησία, την εκτίμηση και αντιμετώπιση του πόνου και της ταλαιπωρίας των ζώων, τις μεθόδους ευθανασίας, τον έλεγχο της υγείας των ζώων και τις ζωανθρωπονόσους. Στο Ειδικό Μέρος (κεφάλαια 14-24) παρέχονται πληροφορίες σχετικές με τη βιολογία, την εκτροφή, τις μεθόδους σύλληψης-συγκράτησης, την αιμοληψία, τη χορήγηση ουσιών, την αναισθησία και την ευθανασία των ειδών ζώων εργαστηρίου που χρησιμοποιούνται συνήθως στην πράξη (μυς, επίμυς, γέρβιλος, χάμστερ, ινδικό χοιρίδιο, κουνέλι, σκύλος, γάτα, χοίρος, πρωτεύοντα πλην ανθρώπου και ψάρια).

We sought to develop a rat model of cigarette smoke exposure (CSE) that created cotinine serum levels comparable to those of smokers and induced conditioned place preference (CPP) suggestive of cigarette smoke abuse liability. Rats were exposed to sidestream cigarette smoke delivered semicontinuously for 2 periods of 20 (group S20), 40 (group S40), or 60 (group S60) min daily for 12 wk. Serum cotinine concentration in blood samples was determined at 1 and 20 h after CSE. A biased (black versus white chamber) CPP paradigm was used. In the high CSE group (group S60), serum cotinine at 1 h (250 to 300 ng/mL) was comparable to average cotinine levels reported for addicted smokers (around 300 ng/mL). Cotinine levels at 20 h after CSE were higher than the smoker-nonsmoker cut-off value (greater than 14 ng/mL) in all smoking groups, with the S60 group having the highest levels. All rats preferred the black chamber to the white chamber during the preexposure CPP test. The time spent in the white chamber was increased compared with 0-wk values in group S40 at 8 wk, group S60 at 4 and 8 wk, and the control group at 4 and 8 wk but not at 12 wk; however, the shift in CPP was significantly higher at 8 wk in group S60 compared with other groups. In conclusion, interrupted 2-h daily CSE for 8 wk induced serum cotinine levels in rats comparable to those of smokers and induced CPP suggestive of cigarette smoke abuse liability.
