Burnt by Democracy traces the political ascendance of neoliberalism and its effects on youth. The book explores democracy and citizenship as described in interviews with over forty young people – ages 16 to 30 – who have either experienced homelessness or identify as an activist, living in five liberal democracies: Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States, and the United Kingdom. Highlighting significant cuts to social and affordable housing, astronomical increases in the costs of higher education, and the transformation and erosion of state benefits systems, Jacqueline Kennelly argues that democracy's decline is not occurring because young people are apathetic, or focused on informal politics, or unaware of their civic duties. Rather, it is because of collective misunderstanding about how democracy is actually structured, how individuals learn to participate, and how growing wealth inequality has undermined the capacity of those at the bottom to meaningfully advocate for changes that might improve their conditions. This book is an ethnographic examination of the young people who serve voluntarily as judges, advocates and other court personnel at the Red Hook Youth Court (RHYC) in Brooklyn, New York—a juvenile diversion program designed to prevent the formal processing of juvenile offenders—usually first-time offenders—for low-level offenses (such as fare evasion, truancy, vandalism) within the juvenile justice system.Focusing on the nine-to-ten-week long unpaid training program that the young people undergo prior to becoming RHYC members, this book offers a detailed description of young people's experiences learning about crime, delinquency, justice, and law. Le Covid-19 a percuté de plein fouet les jeunes générations, remettant au grand jour la situation peu enviable d'une jeunesse déjà fragilisée par le contexte socioéconomique, politique, environnemental et même digital ambiant avec la fracture numérique, confirmant la vulnérabilité des jeunes, dans le monde entier, la précarité de leur vie quotidienne. En temps de paix comme de guerre, pendant les périodes de crises politique, économique, sociale, climatique ou sanitaire, comme depuis fin 2019, les jeunes, au même titre que les femmes, les enfants, les personnes beaucoup plus âgées ou handicapées, sont des proies faciles d'une conjoncture qu'ils n'ont vraiment pas choisie. Cette contribution, fruit d'une enquête menée avec des jeunes d'Afrique, Europe et des Etats-Unis d'Amérique, en janvier 2021, nous montre comment ces générations nouvelles ont su, face à cette crise inédite, trouver des mécanismes, souvent originaux, pour continuer à élaborer des projets et envisager des lendemains meilleurs.

The existential exclusion of youths from the mainframe of the current global order is an increasingly pressing issue. This volume seeks to address what its contributors take to be an important lacuna in youth cultural research: a lack of interest in the phenomenon of collectivity and collective aspects of youth culture. It gathers scholars from diverse research backgrounds – ranging from contemporary subculture studies, fan culture studies, musicology, youth transitions studies, criminology, technology and work-life studies – who all address collective phenomena in young lives. The 2007–8 financial crisis and subsequent'Great Recession'particularly affected young people trying to make their way from education into the labour market at a time of economic uncertainty and upheaval. This is the first volume to examine the impact of the Great Recession on the developmental stage of young adulthood, a critical phase of the life course that has great significance in the foundations of adult identity. Using evidence from longitudinal data sets spanning three major OECD countries, these essays examine the recession's effects on education and employment outcomes, and consider the wider psycho-social consequences, including living arrangements, family relations, political engagement, and health and well-being. While the recession intensified the impact of pre-existing trends towards a prolonged dependence on parents and, for many, the precaritization of life chances, the findings also point to manifestations of resilience, where young people countered adversity by forging positive expectations of the future.
