The workforce of mental health providers serving lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and/or questioning (LGBTQ+) youth lags far behind the demand for LGBTQ-focused mental health care. Unsatisfactory training and a lack of standardized training metrics for accredited programs perpetuate the lack of preparedness among providers. The presence of LGBTQ+ faculty and mentors in medical education increases the amount of LGBTQ+ content taught to trainees and improves professional development for LGBTQ+ trainees. Inclusive workplace practices and affirming care policies may also improve retention and recruitment of LGBTQ-serving mental health providers.

AbstractThis study examined the impact of reflective practice consultations on staff in a nonprofit provider of youth mental health services in Calgary, Canada. Three groups of participants completed surveys and qualitative interviews: frontline staff (n = 10) and supervisors (n = 14) who participated in reflective practice consultations, and a control group of supervisors with no additional support (n = 10). Survey results indicated that supervisors who took part in the reflective practice consultations showed quantitative improvements in resilience and reflective practice self-efficacy. Qualitative interviews indicated that establishing trust and safety facilitated use of reflective practice while feeling overworked impeded use of reflective practice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: Mental health problems and vocational disengagement are often linked for young people in a self-reinforcing cycle. Integrated Individual Placement and Support (IPS) services can help to not only overcome educational/vocational challenges but also improve mental wellbeing. Methods: In a matched cohort study, we compared improvement rates in mental health and wellbeing outcomes for young people aged 15 to 25 who had received at least two integrated IPS services with those who had received standard youth mental health services only. Data came from headspace, Australia's National Youth Mental Health Foundation. The sample comprised 2128 participants: 544 received integrated IPS services; 1584 received standard mental health services. Results: Four out of five IPS clients (81%) achieved positive outcomes on at least one of three mental health measures, a significantly higher proportion than matched clients who received standard services (75%). Logistic regressions estimated a 22% to 36% higher likelihood of achieving significant improvement for IPS clients. Greater improvements were evident for quality of life and potentially psychosocial functioning, but not psychological distress. Conclusions: Integrating an IPS program within a clinical setting not only achieves positive vocational outcomes, but also supports improvements in quality of life, psychosocial functioning and psychological distress that are greater or equal to the outcomes achieved through standard clinical care. Mental health care in the U.S. is at a critical crisis, compounded with a severe shortage of providers. The cost burden is immense, with severe disparity seen in traditionally marginalized communities and rural populations. Community health workers have been used to increase access to physical health care in the U.S. for over seventy years—and have been used abroad for centuries. Their use in mental health care is more recent and can increase access, but raises policy, reimbursement, triage, and scopes-of-practice considerations. They are especially beneficial for many at-risk populations including communities of color, those with serious mental illness, rural communities, the elderly, and youth. This literature review searched PubMed, EMBASE, and Google Scholar and provides a broad review of the different types of community mental health workers (community health workers/promotores de salud, peer support, peer navigators, and lay counselors), how they increase access to care, skill sets, practice locations, and uses for specific at-risk populations. Increasing and expanding the use of community mental health workers expands much needed mental health care to those at risk by task-shifting the burden on the traditional professional workforce, offering a solution to both the workforce shortage and the lack of equity in mental health care. Rural Australian youth exhibit high rates of mental ill-health, exacerbated by reduced access to mental health services. While the need for innovative solutions is well-established rural youth themselves are frequently excluded from the dialogue, creating a significant gap in evidence and the development of relevant service provision that reflects young people's lived experiences. Drawing on the concepts of individualism and healthism and research highlighting the continuing importance of relationships and trust in the lives of young people in a digital society, we aim to better understand how rural youth understand mental health and navigate mental health services and information. Using a qualitative methodology, we held 2 small focus groups with a total of 8 young people in rural Tasmania to identify aspects of rural mental healthcare that require improvement and to contribute to developing new and innovative solutions. Findings indicate that rural Tasmanian youth face numerous structural, social, and cultural barriers to positive mental health. Rural self-reliance and generational differences in attitudes towards mental health can negatively affect youths' help-seeking behaviours. Findings from this study suggest a need to combine technology-and community-based approaches creating a multi-generational approach to combat mental ill-health among rural youth. Aims: Poor sleep is highly prevalent in young people and increases risk of mental health difficulties, yet access to sleep interventions remains limited. This paper evaluates the use of a sleep intervention delivered by non‐expert practitioners in a secondary care youth mental health service. Method: Assistant psychologists were trained to deliver a six‐session 1:1 cognitive‐behavioural sleep intervention adapted for use with young people with mental health difficulties. A within‐subject design assessed clinical outcomes relating to sleep (Insomnia Severity Index), psychological distress and personal goals (Goal Based Outcome Measures) at four time points. Results: High referral, intervention take‐up (82.82%) and completion (70%) rates were reported, together with high baseline levels of insomnia (Insomnia Severity Index mean 20.47, SD 3.68) and poor sleep efficiency (56.36%, SD 17.23). Fifty‐six young people (average age 19.2 years, SD 3.25) were included in the outcome analysis. Statistically and clinically significant improvements were seen across all outcome measures, with 68% no longer meeting clinical threshold (ISI ≥15) for insomnia at endpoint. Conclusions: This study demonstrates exceptionally high levels of clinical need and engagement with a sleep intervention adapted specifically for young people with mental health difficulties. Whilst limited by the uncontrolled design, large improvements in insomnia and psychological distress support its effectiveness and utility in clinical settings. The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated a widespread shift to telehealth among mental health professionals to prioritize both providers' and clients' safety. Telehealth is likely here to stay; however, there is limited practical guidance for clinicians about how to make decisions regarding who should proceed with care via telehealth versus in-person. There also is virtually no data on the effectiveness of hybrid approaches to care; yet this can be an attractive option with potential clinical benefit. This paper provides practice-informed guidance to support shared clinical decision-making between clinicians and families to decide whether to engage in therapy services in-person or via telehealth. We specifically focus on decision-making guidance relevant for youth with anxiety or related disorders, given the unique implications of telehealth for these youth. Guided by the three-legged stool of evidence-based practice, we discuss how clinicians can use principles of shared decision-making to inform clinical recommendations about treatment modality. The increasing number of population-level stressors globally has raised concerns over their mental health consequences on young people. Few studies, however, have examined such factors in population-based youth samples, particularly with consideration of how different stressor types could affect mental health via their impacts on specific world assumptions. As part of a household-based epidemiological study, 766 young people (aged 15–25 years) participated in this study from June 2021 to 2022. We examined how negative world assumptions, assessed using the World Assumption Scale (WAS), and the subdomains of benevolence, meaningfulness, and self-worth, would mediate the impact of stressors on symptom expression. Stressors included population-level stressful events, such as those related to social unrest (TEs) and the COVID-19 pandemic (PEs), as well as personal stressful life events (SLEs) and adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). Meanwhile, symptoms included depressive, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms. Results showed that negative meaningfulness assumptions significantly mediated the effect of social unrest–related TEs on PTSD symptoms, while benevolence and self-worth mediated the effect of ACEs on depressive and anxiety symptoms. COVID-19 PEs and SLEs showed no significant association with world assumptions. Higher overall negative world assumptions were also significantly associated with poorer functioning and health-related quality of life. The findings suggest that world assumptions play specific mediating roles between different types of external stressors and symptom outcomes, with population-level human-induced stressors and childhood adversity playing more determining roles. BACKGROUND: Youth mental health rates of depression and anxiety continue to climb. Schools have a role to play to support youth mental health but often struggle to navigate community expectations. METHODS: Focus groups (n = 17) were conducted with over 100 participants to understand community perceptions on the role of schools. RESULTS: Three themes emerged around what schools should be doing: (1) provide accurate education about mental health, (2) create mental health promoting environments that positively supports young people, and (3) act as a common space to bring community members and organizations together for their young people. IMPLICATIONS FOR SCHOOL HEALTH POLICY, PRACTICE, AND EQUITY: School professionals and systems should be equipped to adequately address youth mental health. The current US institutional response to this crisis is underdeveloped and exacerbates equity issues and health outcome disparities. Schools need institutional support for addressing mental health in ways that incorporate building a shared understanding with families and providing efforts to prevent and detect rather than just treat mental health. CONCLUSIONS: Schools should work with their communities to promote shared understanding and accountability for all to engage in building rich protective environments that promote mental well‐being for kids in their care. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between RUO types and mental health in a youth sample in Hong Kong. Background: Previous research has found that Resilient, Undercontrolled, and Overcontrolled (RUO) personality types derived from Big Five personality traits are associated with mental health outcomes. Most studies, however, have predominantly been conducted in Western societies. Method: Clinical diagnostic interviews and self‐rated measures of psychological constructs, covering resilience, rumination, self‐esteem and more, were administered to 860 youths aged 15 to 24 recruited from an ongoing epidemiological youth mental health study in Hong Kong. Results: Three personality clusters were identified. The first (mean age = 19.6, 63.3% female) and second (mean age = 19.5, 60.7% female) cluster both have characteristics of the under‐ and overcontrolled personalities. The third personality type resembled the resilient profile in RUO typology (mean age = 19.6, 50.5% female) and showed the lowest prevalence of poor mental health. Conclusions: The results suggest that the replicability of the RUO profiles was only partial in a Hong Kong sample predominantly Chinese. The resilient profile was replicated but not the undercontrolled and overcontrolled profiles proposed by previous studies. Aim: Integrated youth services (IYS) have been identified as a national priority in response to the youth mental health and substance use (MHSU) crisis in Canada. In British Columbia (BC), an IYS initiative called Foundry expanded to 11 physical centres and launched a virtual service. The aim of the study was to describe the demographics of Foundry clients and patterns of service utilization during this expansion, along with the impact of the COVID‐19 pandemic. Methods: Data were analysed for all youth (ages 12–24) accessing both in‐person (April 27th, 2018‐March 31st, 2021) and virtual (May 1st, 2020‐March 31st, 2021) services. Cohorts containing all clients from before (April 27th, 2018‐March 16th, 2020) and during (March 17th, 2020‐March 31st, 2021) the COVID‐19 pandemic were also examined. Results: A total of 23 749 unique youth accessed Foundry during the study period, with 110 145 services provided. Mean client age was 19.54 years (SD = 3.45) and 62% identified as female. Over 60% of youth scored 'high' or 'very high' for distress and 29% had a self‐rated mental health of 'poor', with similar percentages seen for all services and virtual services. These ratings stayed consistent before and during the COVID‐19 pandemic. Conclusions: Foundry has continued to reach the target age group, with a 65% increase in number of clients during the study period compared with the pilot stage. Background Objective Method Results Conclusions Youth mental health (YMH) services have been established internationally to provide timely, age‐appropriate, mental health treatment and improve long‐term outcomes. However, YMH services face challenges including long waiting times, limited continuity of care, and time‐bound support. To bridge this gap, MOST was developed as a scalable, blended, multi‐modal digital platform integrating real‐time and asynchronous clinician‐delivered counselling; interactive psychotherapeutic content; vocational support; peer support, and a youth‐focused online community. The implementation of MOST within Australian YMH services has been publicly funded.The primary aim of this study was to evaluate the real‐world engagement, outcomes, and experience of MOST during the first 32 months of implementation.Young people from participating YMH services were referred into MOST. Engagement metrics were derived from platform usage. Symptom and satisfaction measures were collected at baseline, 6, and 12 (primary endpoint) weeks. Effect sizes were calculated for the primary outcomes of depression and anxiety and secondary outcomes of psychological distress and wellbeing.Five thousand seven hundred and two young people from 262 clinics signed up and used MOST at least once. Young people had an average of 19 login sessions totalling 129 min over the first 12 weeks of use, with 71.7% using MOST for at least 14 days, 40.1% for 12 weeks, and 18.8% for 24 weeks. There was a statistically significant, moderate improvement in depression and anxiety at 12 weeks as measured by the PHQ4 across all users irrespective of treatment stage (d = 0.41, 95% CI 0.35–0.46). Satisfaction levels were high, with 93% recommending MOST to a friend. One thousand one hundred and eighteen young people provided written feedback, of which 68% was positive and 31% suggested improvement.MOST is a highly promising blended digital intervention with potential to address the limitations and enhance the impact of YMH services. The Mental Health of Youth Story (MYSTORY) study is a community-university partnership study which involved photovoice and consultation with young people. The MYSTORY study aimed to: (1) better understand adolescents’ perspectives on youth and school mental health and suicide prevention, and (2) communicate insights to schools and the wider community. In this article, we explored adolescents’ experiences of engaging with the MYSTORY study. Reflexive thematic analysis supports the MYSTORY study as a youth-centered study, which involved reflection, discussion and sharing of mental health perspectives and experiences within the study and community contexts. Study engagement was associated with feelings of pride, accomplishment, and connection. This study makes a novel contribution to understanding adolescents’ engagement in photovoice research exploring youth and school mental health, from the perspective of adolescents. Brief, school-based mental health interventions hold promise for reducing barriers to mental health support access, a critical endeavor in light of increasing rates of mental health concerns among youth. However, there is no consensus on whether or not brief school-based interventions are effective at reducing mental health concerns or improving well-being. This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to provide consensus and determine directions for future work. Articles were included if they examined a brief (≤ four sessions or 240 min of intervention time) psychosocial intervention, were conducted within a Pre-K through 12th-grade school setting, included at least one treatment outcome evaluating mental health or well-being, and were published since 2000. A total of 6,702 papers were identified through database searching, of which 81 papers (k studies = 75) were ultimately selected for inclusion. A total of 40,498 students were included across studies and a total of 75 unique interventions were examined. A total of 324 effect sizes were extracted. On average, interventions led to statistically significant improvements in mental health/well-being outcomes versus control conditions up to one-month (g =.18, p =.004), six-month (g =.15, p =.006), and one-year (g =.10, p =.03) post-intervention. There may be benefits to brief school-based interventions from a preventative public health standpoint; future research may focus on how to optimize their real-world utility. Out‐of‐school programs are an accessible option to bolster the mental well‐being of youth, who may be at risk of developing further emotional and behavioural concerns. Developing a more nuanced understanding of the tools and methods available to understand youth mental health needs, in the context of out‐of‐school programs is needed to provide relevant services. However, many out‐of‐school programs do not include such an assessment. One barrier to doing so may be a lack of knowledge regarding the tools that can be used in this specialised context. The present scoping review was conducted to identify the tools that have been used to determine the emotional and behavioural needs of youth attending out‐of‐school programs and to synthesise information regarding the context in which these tools have been used. Fifty‐seven articles met the criteria for the review, and within these articles, 69 unique measures of emotional and behavioural needs were identified. The measures were sorted into six thematic categories (self‐concept, emotion and behaviour regulation, mood, general mental health, social skills and resilience) and relevant characteristics were described. The findings of the present review may be helpful to out‐of‐school programs as a step to best meet the needs of participating youth. Objectives: Most lifetime mental health problems (MHP) start before the age of 25. Yet young people—particularly those of minority backgrounds—often do not seek or access professional help. In the UK, young people of Eastern European (EE) backgrounds represent a large minority group; however, little is known about their experiences of MHP and help‐seeking. In this study, we aim to understand the help‐seeking process from the perspectives of EE young people. Design: We used a qualitative study design with semi‐structured individual interviews. The results were analysed using reflexive thematic analysis. Method: Twelve young people (18–25 years) of EE backgrounds, living in Oxfordshire, UK, took part. All participants had experienced a severe MHP and were identified in the community. Results: EE young people's experiences of MHP and help‐seeking were driven by a sense of being caught between different cultures and simultaneously needing to navigate the potentially contrasting expectations of both cultures. This process was reinforced or tempered by the perceived continuing influence of young people's families, that is, families with more open views about MHP made it easier for young people to navigate through the process of help‐seeking. Young people's internalised cultural and familial beliefs about MHP affected their decision‐making when experiencing difficulties, their levels of trust in services, and perceived sense of resourcefulness and ability to cope. Conclusions: Recognising and responding to the cultural tension that young people of EE backgrounds may experience can help us to develop more accessible and inclusive mental health services. BACKGROUND: It is vital to improve the mental health (MH) of young people in Hong Kong, where the suicide rate has nearly doubled among those aged 15‐29 years since 2014. This multi‐method evaluation aimed to assess Coolminds, which promoted MH literacy by engaging students, parents, and educators in secondary schools in Hong Kong. METHODS: Students, parents, and teachers completed self‐report measures before and after attending workshops aimed at raising MH literacy. Pre‐ and post‐survey data were collected between November 2021 and August 2022. Qualitative data from participant feedback and a focus group interview with Coolminds staff were analyzed using descriptive content analysis. RESULTS: The final dataset included 2903 students, 395 parents, and 325 educators from 52 schools. Only 3 schools had engagement with all 3 key groups. Significant improvements in MH knowledge were observed after the Coolminds workshops for all 3 groups. Qualitative analysis identified a reactive approach to MH issues, and bureaucratic and logistical challenges as barriers to implementation. CONCLUSION: Findings support the effectiveness of the Coolminds curriculum in improving MH literacy for each group and the demand for MH promotions in school settings. OBJECTIVE: Geography may influence the relationships of predictors for suicidal ideation (SI) and suicide attempts (SA) in children and youth. METHOD: This is a nationwide retrospective cohort study of 124,424 individuals less than 25 years of age using commercial claims data (2011-2015) from the Health Care Cost Institute. Outcomes were time to SI or SA within 3 months after the indexed mental health or substance use disorder (MH/SUD) outpatient visit. Predictors included sociodemographic and clinical characteristics up to 3 years before the index event. RESULTS: At each follow-up time period, rates of SI and SA varied by the US geographic division (p < .001), and the Mountain Division consistently had the highest rates for both SI and SA (5.44%-10.26% for SI; 0.70%-2.82% for SA). Having MH emergency department (ED) visits in the past year increased the risk of SI by 28% to 65% for individuals residing in the New England, Mid-Atlantic, East North Central, West North Central, and East South Central Divisions. Background: A significant number of young individuals are readmitted one or more times shortly after their first episode of psychosis. Readmission may represent a marker of psychopathological vulnerability. Our primary aim was to evaluate the impact of clinical and socio-demographic variables on readmission at 12-month follow-up. Secondly, our goal was to determine whether the use of Long-Acting Injection (LAI) antipsychotics provides notable benefits compared to oral medications in preventing subsequent readmissions. Subjects and methods: 80 patients hospitalised for the first time with a diagnosis of psychotic disorder (ICD-10 criteria) were retrospectively assessed through clinical records. The mean age was 21.7 years. Patients were predominantly male (n = 62, 77.5%), and 55 subjects had at least 8 years of education. 50% of the sample was “NEET” (not in education, employment, or training). Results: 35 patients (43.8%) were discharged with a LAI antipsychotic, while 45 (56.2%) recieved oral antipsychotic therapy. Substance use (p = 0.04) and oral antipsychotics at discharge (p = 0.003) were significantly associated with readmission at 1 year. We did not find any significant predictors of being discharged with LAI therapy. Conclusion: Our findings underlined the importance of identifying patients at risk of readmission in order to prevent future rehospitalization and promote appropriate prevention strategies. LAIs should be considered as a first-choice treatment for patients hospitalised for FEP since they proved to be effective in preventing relapse.

Abstract The Pacific population in Aotearoa New Zealand is youthful, with the majority (55%) being under the age of 25 (Statistics New Zealand, 2014). It is vital that youth mental health for Pacific is understood in relation to their overall wellbeing (Paterson et al., 2018). In parallel to this, the World Health Organization (2022) accentuates the need to protect and promote mental wellbeing for young people globally. Specifically, Pacific youth were far more likely than Aotearoa New Zealand European counterparts to have poorer mental health and higher numbers of suicidality and self-harming behaviours (Ataera-Minster & Trowland, 2018; Fa'alili-Fidow et al., 2016). Moreover, research confirms that Pacific people aged 15–24 years have higher levels of psychological distress of 38% compared to 35% of Pacific adults aged 45–64 years (Ataera-Minster & Trowland, 2018). There is a lack of evidence-based psychological approaches that are culturally appropriate and applicable for Pacific people in Aotearoa New Zealand. Considerably, substantial evidence supports the need to provide more accessible resources and interventions that are flexible, culturally adaptable and cost-effective for Pacific youth. This review aims to (1) provide an insight into Pacific people in Aotearoa New Zealand, (2) have an understanding of Pacific worldview & wellbeing, (3) highlight mental health for Aotearoa New Zealand youth & globally (4) identify therapeutic approaches, including digital mental health globally and in Aotearoa New Zealand. Understanding the perspectives of Pacific youth is a significant first step. Therefore, this article will examine the therapeutic approaches, specifically in the digital space, that are proven effective when promoting wellness for Pacific youth.

The pronounced increase in the number of young people struggling with mental health and wellbeing continues to puzzle researchers, politicians and practitioners. Discussions around this seem to fluctuate between individualizing understandings of the problem matter and more structural, institutional and cultural ones, calling for research exploring the role of the latter. In this paper, we present analyses of how broader societal frameworks linked to acceleration, performance and psychologization affect the wellbeing of young people. Based on a longitudinal qualitative study in Denmark with 37 young men and women between the ages of 16 and 24 struggling with wellbeing, this paper unfolds structural, cultural and institutional influences on mental health issues experienced by young people. The analyses are produced using a social-analytical lens of ‘diagnosis of the times’ to explore how young people’s subjective everyday life experiences of wellbeing and wellbeing struggles must be understood as interlinked with broader societal frameworks and expectations. Aim: Educational attainment is consistently highly valued by young people with mental ill health, yet maintenance and completion of education is a challenge. This paper reports on the implementation of a supported education programme for youth mental health. Methods: Between 10 October 2019 and 10 October 2020, a supported education programme was delivered within primary and tertiary youth mental health services. A description of the programme, context, and adjustments required due to COVID‐19 is presented, and the educational outcomes of young people referred to the programme were explored. Two case studies are also presented. Results: The programme received 71 referrals over this period, of which 70.4% had not yet completed secondary school and 68% were experiencing multiple mental health conditions. Overall outcomes were positive, with 47.5% of the 40 young people who chose to engage with the programme maintaining or re‐engaging with education. However, the remainder of those who engaged withdrew from the programme, often reporting challenges due to COVID‐19 such as social isolation or increased uncertainty. Additionally, a number of young people declined or disengaged from the programme to focus on employment. Conclusion: This report of the experience of integrating a supported employment programme in Australian youth mental health services reinforces the need for such support, and provides preliminary evidence for its successful implementation as part of routine care. The disengagement in response to COVID‐19 highlights the real‐world challenges of the pandemic, while young people's voicing of employment goals indicates the need for combined educational and vocational support—to assist transition and progression between these goals. Background: A significant number of young individuals are readmitted one or more times shortly after their first episode of psychosis. Readmission may represent a marker of psychopathological vulnerability. Our primary aim was to evaluate the impact of clinical and socio-demographic variables on readmission at 12-month follow-up. Secondly, our goal was to determine whether the use of Long-Acting Injection (LAI) antipsychotics provides notable benefits compared to oral medications in preventing subsequent readmissions. Subjects and methods: 80 patients hospitalised for the first time with a diagnosis of psychotic disorder (ICD-10 criteria) were retrospectively assessed through clinical records. The mean age was 21.7 years. Patients were predominantly male (n = 62, 77.5%), and 55 subjects had at least 8 years of education. 50% of the sample was "NEET" (not in education, employment, or training). Results: 35 patients (43.8%) were discharged with a LAI antipsychotic, while 45 (56.2%) recieved oral antipsychotic therapy. Substance use (p = 0.04) and oral antipsychotics at discharge (p = 0.003) were significantly associated with readmission at 1 year. We did not find any significant predictors of being discharged with LAI therapy. Conclusion: Our findings underlined the importance of identifying patients at risk of readmission in order to prevent future rehospitalization and promote appropriate prevention strategies. In recent times there has been increasing acknowledgement of the importance of attending to the agenda of people with lived experience in psychotherapy research. In particular, young people's voices have been recognised as central to the design and development of psychotherapies that work for them. It is important to recognise the limits of professional agendas and make sure that young people's own priorities are represented in the indicators against which we measure change in research evaluations of psychotherapy. This requires an extension of evaluation research indicators from psychiatric symptomatology, to include aspects of wellbeing that matter to young people themselves. This article joins others in calling for a shift from the focus on symptom change in the evaluation of psychotherapy with youth, to acknowledge subjective indicators identified through research conducted with young people. New indicators might, for example, be centred on the degree to which young people experience increased capacity for acceptance of their emotions, a comfortable sense of identity, improved relational trust, and a stronger sense of their own agency. If psychotherapy is to be meaningful to young people, it is vital that we tailor it to young people's own needs and priorities and evaluate it against the aspects of change that matter to them. In the context of the current youth mental health crisis, it is prudent to reconsider how resources are allocated to facilitate the delivery of effective and comprehensive supports and services to children and adolescents. Schools are the main delivery sites for youth mental health services. Many districts have adopted comprehensive school mental health systems (CSMHS) to provide a multitiered approach comprising mental health promotion, prevention, and intervention to students via partnerships between school and community health and behavioral health providers. COVID-19 relief funding and other new federal and state investments in school mental health have led to expansions of school mental health programming in most states. An impending federal funding cliff necessitates an examination of how to wisely invest now to achieve the greatest positive future impact on youth mental health. To capitalize on opportunities to sustain effective school mental health and maximize return on investment, states may consider four strategies: leverage cross-sector partnerships to advance school mental health policies and funding, strengthen and expand Medicaid coverage of CSMHS, establish and enhance data systems, and create state technical assistance and professional development support for CSMHS implementation through local education agencies. Introduction: Integrated care has been posited as a potential solution to the global burden of youth mental health (YMH), but there is limited evidence on how best to design, staff, and evaluate different integrated care models. Our review aimed to consolidate the evidence on integrated models of mental healthcare for young people, to identify the core components of integration, and create a framework that can be used to analyse levels of YMH integration. Methods: We conducted a systematic review of literature across PubMed, SCOPUS, and PsycINFO databases and the grey literature We performed a narrative synthesis extracting core components of integrated YMH care. Results: Inductive themes from the literature described core components of integrated care. These themes were mapped into a novel framework combining the World Health Organisation health system building blocks and six intensity levels of integrated care to consider how best to implement and sustain integrated care within the YMH system. Discussion: The Youth Integration Project framework can form a basis for the development, implementation and evaluation of well-articulated models of youth integrated mental health pathways, assisting services identify what operational changes are needed to best implement and sustain integrated care. Many training initiatives are underway to increase implementation of evidence-based practice (EBPs) in mental healthcare. However, little is known about what types of trainings and supports yield the highest reach and engagement. Supported by a tax-funded, countywide initiative to improve access to quality care for youths, the current mixed methods study evaluates mental health (MH) provider reach, or registering for the training initiative, and engagement, or participation in training activities, for several EBP training and implementation supports. MH providers were offered free 1) formal EBP workshops, 2) a biweekly learning community, 3) individual case consultation, and 4) confidential online clinical feedback system. To register, interested providers (N = 698) completed a web-based assessment measuring clinical practice information, organizational implementation climate, and EBP knowledge, attitudes, and practices. Thirteen providers, selected via purposeful sampling stratified by level of participation, completed semi-structured qualitative interviews. While the training initiative achieved high reach (66% of county agencies had a provider register), far fewer providers engaged substantially in training. Quantitative results indicated that providers whose professional discipline was not psychology, had higher baseline EBP knowledge, more extensive use of common evidence-based strategies, and less extensive use of other therapy strategies, engaged in more training. Rapid qualitative analysis of interviews expanded upon these findings and illuminated provider, organizational, system, practical, and training activity-specific barriers and facilitators to engagement. Findings suggest the importance of identifying strategies for improving provider engagement in training activities beyond workshops. New generations of youth are coming of age at a time when digital technology is omnipresent, and ever-evolving. It is not yet fully appreciated what effect this level of digital technology use will have on current and future generations. Although not entirely negative, dramatic shifts in human interaction and well-being have already presented themselves. Among these shifts are rising rates of youth struggling with mental health–especially since the COVID-19 pandemic. In this study, we explore youth perspectives on the relationship between their digital technology and their mental health, through the use of semi-structured interviews and thematic analysis. Our research question was: How do youth understand the relationship between digital technology use and their mental health? We interviewed eight adolescents and asked them to share their experiences of the relationship between their devices and their well-being. Thematic findings highlight a conflictual relationship between digital technology use and youth mental health, affecting their relationships with others, themselves, and the world around them. Because digital technology consumption on this scale is so new, our sample represents one of the first available cohorts of youth to actively participate in the exploration of this topic. Implications include the need for further qualitative research to prioritize youth voices in ways that will benefit broader societal understandings of technology and mental health. In this pilot study, we tested a virtual family strengthening and mental health promotion intervention, Coping Together (CT), during the COVID-19 pandemic. We explored changes at the family and individual levels, as well as mechanisms of change. Participants included 18 families (24 caregivers, 24 youth) with children aged 7 to 18 years. Community health workers delivered the 8-session CT intervention using videoconferencing software. We used qualitative semi-structured interviews with 14 of the families to explore changes and mechanisms of change using a thematic content analysis approach. We also administered pre-post surveys with the 18 families to explore the direction of changes, using only descriptive statistics in this small sample. Qualitative findings supported positive changes across family and individual level outcomes including family functioning, relationship quality, and individual psychosocial well-being. Results also confirmed several hypothesized mechanisms of change with improved communication providing the foundation for increased hope and improved problem solving and coping. Pre-post survey results were mixed, showing positive, but very small, changes in family closeness, caregiver-child communication, and levels of hope; almost no change was observed on measures of caregiver and child mental health. Families reported few problems at baseline quantitatively despite qualitative descriptions of pre-intervention difficulties. Results provide preliminary support for benefits of CT with the most consistent improvements seen across family relationships. Findings were mixed related to individual-level mental health benefits. Results have implications for revising content on mental health coping strategies and suggest the need to revise the quantitative measurement strategy for this non-clinical sample. Protecting brain health is a goal of early intervention. We explored whether sleep quality or chronotype could predict white matter (WM) integrity in emerging mental disorders. Young people (N = 364) accessing early‐intervention clinics underwent assessments for chronotype, subjective sleep quality, and diffusion tensor imaging. Using machine learning, we examined whether chronotype or sleep quality (alongside diagnostic and demographic factors) could predict four measures of WM integrity: fractional anisotropy (FA), and radial, axial, and mean diffusivities (RD, AD and MD). We prioritised tracts that showed a univariate association with sleep quality or chronotype and considered predictors identified by ≥80% of machine learning (ML) models as 'important'. The most important predictors of WM integrity were demographics (age, sex and education) and diagnosis (depressive and bipolar disorders). Subjective sleep quality only predicted FA in the perihippocampal cingulum tract, whereas chronotype had limited predictive importance for WM integrity. To further examine links with mood disorders, we conducted a subgroup analysis. In youth with depressive and bipolar disorders, chronotype emerged as an important (often top‐ranking) feature, predicting FA in the cingulum (cingulate gyrus), AD in the anterior corona radiata and genu of the corpus callosum, and RD in the corona radiata, anterior corona radiata, and genu of corpus callosum. Subjective quality was not important in this subgroup analysis. In summary, chronotype predicted altered WM integrity in the corona radiata and corpus callosum, whereas subjective sleep quality had a less significant role, suggesting that circadian factors may play a more prominent role in WM integrity in emerging mood disorders. Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) can both precede and co-occur with suicidal attempts (SA). Underlying mechanisms/factors leading to the transition to SA in NSSI youths have been proposed (including the role of social cognition), despite they should be yet confirmed. Therefore, the study aims at exploring the role of the Theory of Mind in the differentiation of a sample of NSSI youngsters (aged 15- 24) according to the presence of SA. We divided the sample into 4 groups using the Deliberate Self Harm Inventory (DSHI) and Columbia Suicide Severity Rating Scale (C-SSRS): control group (notNSSInotSA), NSSI without SA (NSSInotSA), NSSI with SA (NSSIplusSA), and SA without NSSI (SAonly). NSSIplusSA patients displayed higher Reading the Mind in the Eyes Test (RMET) scores (indicative of ToM abilities) than both the NSSInotSA (p=0.0016) and SAonly groups (p=0.0198), while SAonly patients showed lower RMET scores compared to the control group (p=0.0214). Multiple regression models used to differentiate NSSInotSA and NSSIplusSA found a significant association between RMET and LOSCS-CSC (Level Of Self-Criticism Scale-Comparative Self-Criticism) (pC=0.0802, pD=0.0016, pG=0.0053). Our findings supported the hypothesis that a hypertrophic affective ToM may possibly be associated with the occurrence of SA in youth NSSI. The Pacific population in Aotearoa New Zealand is youthful, with the majority (55%) being under the age of 25 (Statistics New Zealand, 2014). It is vital that youth mental health for Pacific is understood in relation to their overall wellbeing (Paterson et al., 2018). In parallel to this, the World Health Organization (2022) accentuates the need to protect and promote mental wellbeing for young people globally. Specifically, Pacific youth were far more likely than Aotearoa New Zealand European counterparts to have poorer mental health and higher numbers of suicidality and self-harming behaviours (Ataera-Minster & Trowland, 2018; Fa'alili-Fidow et al., 2016). Moreover, research confirms that Pacific people aged 15–24 years have higher levels of psychological distress of 38% compared to 35% of Pacific adults aged 45–64 years (Ataera-Minster & Trowland, 2018). There is a lack of evidence-based psychological approaches that are culturally appropriate and applicable for Pacific people in Aotearoa New Zealand. Considerably, substantial evidence supports the need to provide more accessible resources and interventions that are flexible, culturally adaptable and cost-effective for Pacific youth. This review aims to (1) provide an insight into Pacific people in Aotearoa New Zealand, (2) have an understanding of Pacific worldview & wellbeing, (3) highlight mental health for Aotearoa New Zealand youth & globally (4) identify therapeutic approaches, including digital mental health globally and in Aotearoa New Zealand. Understanding the perspectives of Pacific youth is a significant first step. Youth-specific digital mental health interventions (DMHI) represent an emerging field of study, and aim to increase access, improve socioemotional outcomes, and, where required, support triage to targeted interventions. However, prior reviews have reported inconsistent findings on the clinical effectiveness of such interventions in young adults (12–25 years). Further, shortfalls remain for the impact of guided interventions based on the mode of delivery and the type of human support personnel (e.g., professional or peer) guiding the intervention. In response, this systematic review, co-designed with Australia's leading mental health organization, aims to assess the effectiveness of guided digital programs in improving youth socioemotional outcomes. Included studies involve young people experiencing mental ill-health, receiving brief (i.e., 1–12 sessions), digitally delivered (at least partially) psychological interventions that were guided or partially guided, tested in a type of experimental study, with a socioemotional outcome. Specific socioemotional outcomes examined were depression, anxiety, stress, wellbeing, mindfulness, and quality of life. A systematic search of the contemporary published and grey literature identified 22,482 records with 32 relevant records published between 2018 and 2023. A narrative synthesis guided integration of findings. Results demonstrated strong evidence for the effectiveness of guided interventions on socioemotional outcomes (i.e., depression, anxiety, stress) yet these effects were short-lived. When factoring in the use of different control groups (i.e., active vs. inactive), inconsistent effects were observed for the socioemotional outcomes of depression, anxiety, and stress. The mode of delivery (i.e., asynchronous, synchronous, combined) and the type of human support personnel did not appear to impact socioemotional outcomes. Results indicate efficacious brief digital interventions for depression and anxiety include refresher/follow-up content, goal setting content, and relapse prevention content. Although many young people demonstrate resilience and strength, research and clinical evidence highlight an upward trend in mental health concerns among those aged 12 to 25 years. Youth-specific digital mental health interventions (DMHIs) aim to address this trend by providing timely access to mental health support for young people (12–25 years). However, there is a considerable gap in understanding young people user experiences with digital interventions. This review, co-designed with Australia's leading mental health organization Beyond Blue, utilizes a systematic methodology to synthesize evidence on user experience in youth-oriented digital mental health interventions that are fully or partially guided. Five relevant online databases were searched for articles published from 2018 to 2023, yielding 22,482 articles for screening and 22 studies were included in the present analysis. User experience outcomes relating to satisfaction and engagement were assessed for each included intervention, with experience indicators relating to usefulness, usability, value, credibility, and desirability being examined. Elements associated with positive/negative outcomes were extracted. Elements shown to positively influence user experience included peer engagement, modern app-based delivery, asynchronous support, and personalized content. In contrast, users disliked static content, homework/log-keeping, the requirement for multiple devices, and social media integration. Asynchronous interventions showed high satisfaction but faced engagement issues, with combined asynchronous/synchronous interventions reporting better completion rates. DMHIs offer a promising platform for youth mental health support and has the potential to dramatically increase the reach of interventions through the adoption of technological and user experience best practices. While young people respond positively to many aspects of intervention modernization, such as interactive, app-based design, other concepts, such as social media integration, they need to be adopted by the field more cautiously to ensure trust and engagement. Background: Youth mental health has declined since the COVID-19 pandemic began. Health coaching and mindfulness-based intervention may support therapeutic processes that promote resilience in the face of risk factors for adverse mental health outcomes. Building Resilience for Healthy Kids (HK) is a school-based intervention designed to support mental health through targeting these processes. Objective: In this study, we tested HK in a pilot randomized controlled trial. Specifically, we examined intervention effects on the theoretically-informed therapeutic processes of emotion regulation, mindfulness, self-efficacy, and resilience and the clinical outcomes of depression and anxiety symptoms. The trial took place between April and June 2021, offering an opportunity to assess the impact of HK in the context of COVID-19. Methods: Participants were early adolescents (N = 230), randomized to HK or assessment-only. Participants in the intervention condition received weekly one-on-one sessions with health coaches. All youth completed validated self-report measures at baseline and post-intervention. Results: Linear mixed effects models indicated that participants who received HK had a greater reduction in emotion regulation difficulties, relative to assessment-only controls (d = 0.84, large effect). Follow-up analyses revealed that youth who endorsed negative affectivity at baseline experienced more benefits than those who did not, and youth who attended more HK sessions increased in self-efficacy, in addition to improved emotion regulation. Intervention effects did not reach significance for other outcomes. Conclusions: Findings suggest that HK may support youth in reducing difficulties in emotion regulation, which are precursors to the development of mental health concerns in adolescence. School nurses have reported stress and worry caring for young people experiencing mental health problems, but why this occurs and how they respond has not been well-explored. In this study researchers generated a substantive theory of the experiences of secondary school nurses who encountered young people with mental health problems using the original method of grounded theory. Thirty-one Western Australian school nurse participants reported that students presented with complex mental and social health needs that were not easily resolved. This was conceptualized as an untenable burden. Participants countered this by engaging in the three-stage process of tactical prioritizing. During an initial period of strategic assimilation into the school and broader community, participants referred students to external service providers. This was frequently inadequate, and participants found themselves grappling with unmet student mental health needs. Participants responded by implementing nursing strategies for optimizing outcomes in the lives of young people, while simultaneously engaging in managing self to support their own well-being. Almost three quarters of mental illnesses start by the age of 25, yet youth (18–25-year-olds) are often underrepresented in U.K. services. This is particularly true for those of ethnic minorities. In this study, we aimed to understand how young Pakistani women and their parents make decisions to seek help for severe mental health problems, and the barriers and facilitators to accessing professional help. Young Pakistani women with experience of severe mental health problems and their parents were recruited from a community sample. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with six young people and two parents. Data were analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis. Pakistani culture and its interplay with British culture strongly influenced the decisions and ability of young Pakistani women and their parents to help-seek, largely through the role of stigma. Low mental health literacy, stigma, and a lack of culturally informed services were identified as the most common barriers to accessing care. These barriers fed into the internalized stigma these young women experienced which, through fear of damaged reputation and personal prejudices, posed further barriers to seeking help. Participants highlighted recommendations for both individual-level (e.g., increased education and awareness) and service-level (e.g., greater choice over care) change to facilitate accessibility of professional help. Young Pakistani women face multiple culturally related challenges to accessing care for severe mental health problems at both the individual- and service-level. Background Rates of acute mental health presentations in youth were increasing pre-pandemic internationally. Longitudinal studies following COVID-19 attest to ongoing deterioration in youth mental health, recognising adverse unintended consequences following public health restrictions. Aims To examine whether the initial post-COVID-19 increase in mental health presentations persisted following the reclassification of COVID-19 to endemic status, accompanied by the removal of most restrictions. Method All referrals to paediatric liaison psychiatry (PLP) between January 2018 and December 2022 in a Dublin tertiary children's hospital were included in the study. An interrupted time series analysis with autoregressive integrated moving average models was conducted, examining referrals with respect to different phases of COVID-19 and application of public health restrictions. Results Some 1385 referrals to PLP were received over the 5-year study. There was a significant decrease in PLP referrals immediately post-COVID-19, followed by a significant and sustained increase as the pandemic progressed and moved to endemic status. Public health restriction phases had a unique effect on those presenting with suicidal ideation, with a significant increase in the number of referrals. There was no effect of restrictions on other clinical profiles. Conclusions Increased referrals for youth with mental health difficulties, reported during the COVID-19 pandemic, persisted into the early endemic stage, after COVID-19 public health restrictions ceased. Specific impacts of restrictions on suicidal ideation referrals require further study. Investment in child and adolescent mental health services remains a priority, and future pandemic response strategies need to examine unintended consequences of any enforced public health measure.

As young people are a vulnerable group, the prevalence of mental disorders in the population has been rapidly increasing in recent years. Not only are young people more at risk from mental disorders, but their lifelong burden accumulates for an extended period. Currently, the scale of the problem is enormous. Thus, various organisations and interest groups sound the alarm about the ongoing mental health crisis. This study aims to investigate the scale of youth mental health crisis in the context of socioeconomic development. The focus is on the burden on society, the economy, and progress as the underlying problems. The assessment is performed by literature studies and exploratory data analysis that allow for highlighting the ongoing tendencies and new phenomena concerning risk factors and mental disorders of young people, both globally and focusing on the Polish perspective, as well as evaluating the availability of mental healthcare in Poland, Europe, and the world. The results indicate that mental health and well-being have not been considered healthcare priorities for a long time. In particular, three issues deserve special attention in the youth mental health crisis context. Firstly, addictions, especially Internet- and smartphone-related behavioural dependences, are becoming a global pandemic among young people. Secondly, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic proved to be catastrophic for the mental health of children and adolescents. Finally, the available mental healthcare and its quality are inadequate to meet the growing needs of young people in the modern world.
