There is limited research regarding childhood emotional abuse (CEA) and its influence on mental health across development, as most studies of childhood maltreatment to date have focused on childhood sexual and physical abuse. We conducted a cross-sectional study on 2,604 young adults seeking counseling services at a large postsecondary institution in the southwestern United States. Participants were screened for trauma exposure, mental health issues, and suicidality. Findings indicated that CEA was significantly associated with higher rates of exposure to other traumatic events, more severe depression, generalized anxiety, social anxiety, academic distress, eating concerns, family distress, hostility, and substance use. CEA exposure was also significantly associated with more frequent suicidal ideation, suicide attempt, and non-suicidal self-injury prior to seeking counseling services. Introduction Latino adolescents may face numerous barriers) to recommended vaccinations. There is little research on the association between Latino adolescent-mother preferred language concordance and vaccination completion and if it varies by neighborhood. To better understand the social/family factors associated with Latino adolescent vaccination, we studied the association of adolescent-mother language concordance and neighborhood social deprivation with adolescent vaccination completion. Methods We employed a multistate, electronic health record (EHR) based dataset of community health center patients to compare three Latino groups: (1) English-preferring adolescents with English-preferring mothers, (2) Spanish-preferring adolescents with Spanish-preferring mothers, and (3) English-preferring adolescents with Spanish-preferring mothers with non-Hispanic white adolescent-mother pairs for human papilloma virus (HPV), meningococcal, and influenza vaccinations. We adjusted for mother and adolescent demographics and care utilization and stratified by the social deprivation of the family's neighborhood. Results Our sample included 56,542 adolescent-mother dyads. Compared with non-Hispanic white dyads, all three groups of Latino dyads had higher odds of adolescent HPV and meningococcal vaccines and higher rates of flu vaccines. Latino dyads with Spanish-preferring mothers had higher vaccination odds/rates than Latino dyads with English-preferring mothers. The effects of variation by neighborhood social deprivation in influenza vaccination rates were minor in comparison to differences by ethnicity/language concordance. Conclusion In a multistate analysis of vaccinations among Latino and non-Latino adolescents, English-preferring adolescents with Spanish-preferring mothers had the highest completion rates and English-preferring non-Hispanic white dyads the lowest. Youth with sickle cell disease (SCD) experience disease effects including vaso-occlusive pain crises, poor sleep quality, and fatigue. The present study examines how sleep quality and pain medications impact fatigue in youth with SCD. Daily diaries assessing pain, fatigue, sleep quality, mood, and use of pain medications from 25 youth with SCD ages 11 to 18 years were collected for eight consecutive weeks. Poor sleep quality predicted increases in next-day fatigue levels while controlling for pain and mood. Sleep quality did not moderate the existing temporal relationship between pain and next-day fatigue established by Reinman et al. (2019) as predicted. Non-opioid medications affected ratings of next-day fatigue but opioid medications did not. Sleep quality appears to play an important role in predicting next-day fatigue levels and may be an important target for intervention. Background Rhabdomyolysis, the breakdown of skeletal muscles following an insult or injury, has been established as a possible complication of SARS-CoV-2 infection. Despite being highly effective in preventing COVID-19-related morbidity and mortality, several cases of COVID-19 mRNA vaccination-induced rhabdomyolysis have been identified. We provide the second description of a pediatric case of severe rhabdomyolysis presenting after COVID-19 mRNA vaccination. Case: diagnosis/treatment A 16-year-old male reported to the emergency department with a 2-day history of bilateral upper extremity myalgias and dark urine 2 days after his first dose of COVID-19 vaccine (Pfizer-BioNtech). The initial blood work showed an elevated creatinine kinase (CK) of 141,300 units/L and a normal creatinine of 69 umol/L. The urinalysis was suggestive of myoglobinuria, with the microscopy revealing blood but no red blood cells. Rhabdomyolysis was diagnosed, and the patient was admitted for intravenous hydration, alkalinization of urine, and monitoring of kidney function. CK levels declined with supportive care, while his kidney function remained normal, and no electrolyte abnormalities developed. The patient was discharged 5 days after admission as his symptoms resolved. Conclusion While vaccination is the safest and most effective way to prevent morbidity from COVID-19, clinicians should be aware that rhabdomyolysis could be a rare but treatable adverse event of COVID-19 mRNA vaccination. Background: Unintentional trauma with motor vehicle crashes (MVCs) is the number-one mechanism of fatal injury. In 2021, 9,066 drivers aged 15 to 20 years were involved in MVCs in Louisiana, with 113 resulting in fatalities. Purpose: The aim of this program evaluation project was to evaluate the effectiveness of the Sudden Impact program on high school sophomore's knowledge and potential behavior change. The Sudden Impact program employs an interdisciplinary approach. The program focuses on educating students on risk-taking behaviors that result in injury or death from an MVC. Methods: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention program evaluation framework was used to assess the effectiveness of the Sudden Impact program. Data collected from 33,075 students from 120 high schools in southeast and central Louisiana from 2014-2020 were analyzed. Findings: A pre-/post-test was used to measure knowledge and potential behavior change. Each individual item in the instrument measuring knowledge and behavior change had a statistical significance (p < 0.05) from pre-test score to post-test score. The Sudden Impact program was able to increase knowledge on distracted driving. Behavior change could not be determined. Implications: The Sudden Impact program can be replicated to assist with lowering MVC injuries and fatalities in teens through increased knowledge of risky driving. School nurses can align with strategic partners to promote better health outcomes for this vulnerable age group. Background: Violence on school property is a serious public health issue. The consequences of exposure to different types of violence can impact youths' socialization, development, and engagement in risk-taking behavior. According to the National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS), during the 2019-2020 academic year, there were an estimated 764,600 reported incidents of violence among students (Irwin et al., 2021). The purpose of this research study was to examine the effects of school violence on students' mental health and risk-taking behaviors. Method: A secondary data analysis of the 2019 Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) was used to describe experiences students have with different forms of violence on school property, including effects of violence on their mental health and participation in risk-taking behaviors. Of the 99 questions in the YRBS, nine questions were used to represent the constructs under investigation. Results: There were significant findings among youth being bullied on school property, being involved in a physical altercation on school property, and not going to school because of feeling unsafe at school or on the way to school. Logistic regression analyses indicated that age, grade, and different exposures to violence on school property were predictive of youths' mental health and engagement in risk-taking behaviors. Conclusion: Results of our study support previous studies that indicate that students experience many traumas during high school. Different forms of violence, such as bullying, can have a dramatic effect on student's mental health and lead to engagement in risk taking behaviors.
