Abstract

Network intrusion detection systems (NIDSs) play an important role in computer network security. There are several detection mechanisms where anomaly-based automated detection outperforms others significantly. Amid the sophistication and growing number of attacks, dealing with large amounts of data is a recognized issue in the development of anomaly-based NIDS. However, do current models meet the needs of today's networks in terms of required accuracy and dependability? In this research, we propose a new hybrid model that combines machine learning and deep learning to increase detection rates while securing dependability. Our proposed method ensures efficient pre-processing by combining SMOTE for data balancing and XGBoost for feature selection. We compared our developed method to various machine learning and deep learning algorithms to find a more efficient algorithm to implement in the pipeline. Furthermore, we chose the most effective model for network intrusion based on a set of benchmarked performance analysis criteria. Our method produces excellent results when tested on two datasets, KDDCUP'99 and CIC-MalMem-2022, with an accuracy of 99.99% and 100% for KDDCUP'99 and CIC-MalMem-2022, respectively, and no overfitting or Type-1 and Type-2 issues., Comment: Accepted in the Journal of Information Security and Applications (Scopus, Web of Science (SCIE) Journal, Quartile: Q1, Site Score: 7.6, Impact Factor: 4.96) on 7 December 2022

Abstract

Natural plant based fibres are being increasingly used in sustainable fibre reinforced composite applications in order to meet the demand of using environmentally friendly materials for composites. Fibre metal laminates (FMLs) are used in aerospace, automobile, marine and civil engineering applications, due to their excellent mechanical behaviors compared to traditional metals and their alloys. This study describes a novel fabrication of jute fibre reinforced aluminum metal laminates, using different jute fibre architectures (plain and twill fabric structures), wherein jute fibres were used in the skins and aluminum in the core layers. Jute fibres and aluminum sheets were chemically treated to enhance the compatibility and interfacial bonding at fibre-metals-matrix interfaces. FMLs were manufactured by hot pressing technique, after the application of wet lay-up process for the resin impregnation and they were further tested under tensile, flexural and impact loading conditions. While comparing results, the twill architecture showed improved tensile and flexural properties compared to plain fabric based FMLs. Chemical treatments on twill jute fibres and metal sheets further exceptionally enhanced the flexural properties (151 MPa flexural strength and 21.3 GPa modulus and they were increased by 186.5 % and 722.7 % respectively compared to the untreated jute fibre counterparts) of the laminates due to a significant improvement in the adhesion between the jute fibre and aluminum sheet after alkali treatment applied. Therefore, with these enhanced properties, jute based FML laminates can be used as sustainable composite materials in many structural applications.

Abstract

There has been a growing interest within CSCW community in understanding the characteristics of misinformation propagated through computational media, and the devising techniques to address the associated challenges. However, most work in this area has been concentrated on the cases in the western world leaving a major portion of this problem unaddressed that is situated in the Global South. This paper aims to broaden the scope of this discourse by focusing on this problem in the context of Bangladesh, a country in the Global South. The spread of misinformation on Facebook in Bangladesh, a country with a population over 163 million, has resulted in chaos, hate attacks, and killings. By interviewing journalists, fact-checkers, in addition to surveying the general public, we analyzed the current state of verifying misinformation in Bangladesh. Our findings show that most people in the `news audience' want the news media to verify the authenticity of online information that they see online. However, the newspaper journalists say that fact-checking online information is not a part of their job, and it is also beyond their capacity given the amount of information being published online everyday. We further find that the voluntary fact-checkers in Bangladesh are not equipped with sufficient infrastructural support to fill in this gap. We show how our findings are connected to some of the core concerns of CSCW community around social media, collaboration, infrastructural politics, and information inequality. From our analysis, we also suggest several pathways to increase the impact of fact-checking efforts through collaboration, technology design, and infrastructure development.

Abstract

Fake news and misinformation spread in developing countries as fast as they do in developed countries with increasing penetration of the internet and social media. However, fighting misinformation is more difficult in developing countries where resources and necessary technologies are scarce. This study provides an understanding of the challenges various fact-checking initiatives face in three South Asian countries--Bangladesh, India, and Nepal. In-depth interviews were conducted with senior editors of six fact-checking initiatives. Challenges identified include lack of resources, technologies, and political pressure. An analysis of Facebook pages of these initiatives shows increasing user engagement with their posts.

Abstract

In this study, we closely look at the use of social media contents as source or reference in the U.S. news media. Specifically, we examine about 60 thousand news articles published within the 5 years period of 2013-2017 by 153 U.S. media outlets and analyze use of social media content as source compared to other sources. We designed a social media source extraction algorithm and investigated the extent and nature of social media source usage across different news topics. Our results show that uses of social media content in news almost doubled in five years. Unreliable media outlets rely on social media more than the mainstream media. Both mainstream and unreliable sites prefer Twitter to Facebook as a source of information.

Abstract

Image denoising is always a challenging task in the field of computer vision and image processing. In this paper, we have proposed an encoder-decoder model with direct attention, which is capable of denoising and reconstruct highly corrupted images. Our model consists of an encoder and a decoder, where the encoder is a convolutional neural network and decoder is a multilayer Long Short-Term memory network. In the proposed model, the encoder reads an image and catches the abstraction of that image in a vector, where decoder takes that vector as well as the corrupted image to reconstruct a clean image. We have trained our model on MNIST handwritten digit database after making lower half of every image as black as well as adding noise top of that. After a massive destruction of the images where it is hard for a human to understand the content of those images, our model can retrieve that image with minimal error. Our proposed model has been compared with convolutional encoder-decoder, where our model has performed better at generating missing part of the images than convolutional autoencoder.

The use of alluring headlines (clickbait) to tempt the readers has become a growing practice nowadays. For the sake of existence in the highly competitive media industry, most of the on-line media including the mainstream ones, have started following this practice. Although the wide-spread practice of clickbait makes the reader's reliability on media vulnerable, a large scale analysis to reveal this fact is still absent. In this paper, we analyze 1.67 million Facebook posts created by 153 media organizations to understand the extent of clickbait practice, its impact and user engagement by using our own developed clickbait detection model. The model uses distributed sub-word embeddings learned from a large corpus. The accuracy of the model is 98.3%. Powered with this model, we further study the distribution of topics in clickbait and non-clickbait contents.

Abstract

Background: The detection of lung nodules at their early stages may significantly enhance the survival rate and prevent progression to severe disability caused by advanced lung cancer, but it often requires manual and laborious efforts for radiologists, with limited success. To alleviate it, we propose a Multi-View Soft Attention-Based Convolutional Neural Network (MVSA-CNN) model for multi-class lung nodular classifications in three stages (benign, primary, and metastatic). Methods: Initially, patches from each nodule are extracted into three different views, each fed to our model to classify the malignancy. A dataset, namely the Lung Image Database Consortium Image Database Resource Initiative (LIDC-IDRI), is used for training and testing. The 10-fold cross-validation approach was used on the database to assess the model's performance. Results: The experimental results suggest that MVSA-CNN outperforms other competing methods with 97.10% accuracy, 96.31% sensitivity, and 97.45% specificity. Conclusions: We hope the highly predictive performance of MVSA-CNN in lung nodule classification from lung Computed Tomography (CT) scans may facilitate more reliable diagnosis, thereby improving outcomes for individuals with disabilities who may experience disparities in healthcare access and quality.
