In this work, a new dual modality monitoring technique is presented to demonstrate its interest to investigate the salt precipitation dynamics induced by gas flow-through drying. It consists of imaging simultaneously a core flood using both Neutron and X-ray beams. A method to calibrate and process the two signals is presented. It takes advantage of the difference in attenuation between the two ionizing radiations to quantify the different phase saturations and compositions as well as the reduction of porosity caused by salt precipitation. A set of experiments has been conducted at the NeXT-Grenoble beamline of the Institute Laue-Langevin facilities (ILL, France). Experiments were conducted on a homogeneous rock sample of Bentheimer sandstone using dry nitrogen and a 100 g/L KBr brine. The two first experiments aimed to calibrate the dual modality for the different phases. The last two experiments have been conducted with a brine capillary contact maintained at the gas outlet. Experimental data have given new insights into the organization of the three phases (the brine, the gas, and the precipitated salt) when a salt bank is formed in the sample. These quantities computed using dual-modality imaging show great similarities with published work. The salt accumulation was used to estimate the flow rate of brine pumped through the capillary contact to compensate for the brine evaporation in the gas phase. Observations have shown that a reduction of the initial porosity in some sections of the sample by 12–14% was enough to trigger a gas draw-down characterized by the migration of the salt toward the gas inlet. In some conditions (low gas inlet pressure for example), the rise of the water could be fast enough to form a second salt bank higher in the sample. It has been observed that the formation of the second salt bank could spread the precipitated salt in a less damaging configuration for the gas flow, triggering a phase of gas build-up characterized by the withdrawal of the water. These phases of gas draw-down and build-up could alternate until the sample clogs.

In this work, unstable displacements were conducted using special equipment designed to run in-situ CT-scanner experiments. All the displacements were conducted on a homogeneous Bentheimer sandstone plug, of 10 cm in diameter and 40 cm in length. Digitations (or fingering) have been observed under varying conditions of injection flowrate, displaced fluid viscosity, and core wettability. They have been characterized at both the core scale, using the core average oil saturation and the water breakthrough; and at the local scale, using the local saturations and had-hoc image processing analysis. It was found that the effect of the different flowing conditions on the front digitations could not be interpreted independently. The oil recovery at brine breakthrough showed a good correlation with the viscous fingering number for the water-wet case. However, a different scaling was observed for the oil-wet case. The interplay of the different flowing conditions mitigates the possibility of constructing a unique scaling number to account for all experimental condition. The local saturation monitoring has provided a new insight to characterize the finger shapes and analyze the production mechanisms. It allowed to distinguish two independent contributions to early breakthrough: viscous dominated digitations and capillary dominated digitations. A two-phases diagram has been constructed to plot and compare these contributions for all flowing conditions. Their evolutions show the main production mechanisms during the flooding. We observed that the viscous digitations were not causing phase trapping at core scale: the core is completely swept after breakthrough. For the water-wet case, we found that the local oil recovery of swept zone remained constant before and after breakthrough while for the oil-wet case it is improving during all the water flooding process.

The injection of a gas phase through a water saturated porous medium can reduce the water saturation not only by displacement mechanisms but also by evaporation mechanisms. In the presence of brine, this process can induce salt crystallization and precipitation within the porous medium with a risk of permeability alteration. In the field of gas production and storage, the occurrence of such a phenomenon can have detrimental consequence on the well productivity or injectivity. In this work, we investigated experimentally and numerically the effect of dry gas injection on salt precipitation and permeability impairment. State of the art equipment designed for high throughput coreflood experimentation was used to capture the dynamic of salt migration using X-Ray radiography. A set of experiments have been conducted on a sample of Bentheimer sandstone (10mm in diameter and 20 mm in length) as well as a two layers composite sample with a significant permeability contrast. Experiments were conducted using Nitrogen and KBr brine with different boundary conditions (i.e. with and without capillary contact). Results showed that salt precipitation results from the interplay of different parameters, namely pressure gradient, brine salinity, capillary forces and vapor partial pressure. Experimental observations indicate that in the case of dry gas injection, salt systematically precipitates but permeability alteration is observed only if a capillary contact is maintained with the brine. We built a 2D flow model integrating two-phase Darcy flow, capillary forces, salt effect on vapor partial pressure, dissolved salt transport, as well as the different PVT equilibria needed to describe properly the systems. Once calibrated, the model showed good predictability of lab scale experiment and thus can be used for parametrical study and upscaled to the well bore scale.

The phenomenology of steady-state two-phase flow in porous media is recorded in SCAL relative permeability diagrams. Conventionally, relative permeabilities are considered to be functions of saturation. Yet, this has been put into challenge by theoretical, numerical and laboratory studies that have revealed a significant dependency on the flow rates. These studies suggest that relative permeability models should include the functional dependence on flow intensities. Just recently a general form of dependence has been inferred, based on extensive simulations with the DeProF model for steady-state two-phase flows in pore networks. The simulations revealed a systematic dependence of the relative permeabilities on the local flow rate intensities that can be described analytically by a universal scaling functional form of the actual independent variables of the process, namely, the capillary number, Ca, and the flow rate ratio, r. In this work, we present the preliminary results of a systematic laboratory study using a high throughput core-flood experimentation setup, whereby SCAL measurements have been taken on a sandstone core across different flow conditions -spanning 6 orders of magnitude on Ca and r. The scope is to provide a preliminary proof-of-concept, to assess the applicability of the model and validate its specificity. The proposed scaling opens new possibilities in improving SCAL protocols and other important applications, e.g. field scale simulators.

This work deals with the influence of partial saturation on the transport process of a passive tracer. Transport experiments were done in a water-wet glass micromodel combined with specific optical techniques. Full water saturation was achieved by injecting initially the background solution and then the tracer, whereas for the partial saturation conditions, the micromodel was initially saturated with oil, and then sequential the background solution and the tracer were injected at the same flow rate. We have shown that in the investigated range of water saturations it exists a transition in the oil ganglia structure and size. For high water saturations oil ganglia have one or two pores in size, however for lower water saturations they comprise an important number of pores. Transport strongly depends on the size distribution of the oil ganglia as they create large percolating paths and stagnant zones. We also showed the existence of two different types of stagnant zones: zones accessible by diffusion into pores and zones only accessible by spatially limited diffusion in films. The major advantage of using glass micromodels lies in the fact that dispersion coefficients can be computed from concentrations averaged over the pore space or from concentrations at the outlet and simultaneously from spatial concentration profiles. Curves were fitted using the Advection–Dispersion Equation (ADE) with adequate boundary conditions. The fitting quality of the temporal evolution of the average and outlet concentration was very good. However, fitting of the concentration profiles could only be done for the higher water saturations. This is due to the fact that the Representative Elementary Volume (REV) of lower water saturations is larger than the micromodel. The results show that fitting the breakthrough curve in order to determine the dispersion coefficient in a partially saturated porous medium might be misleading. Indeed, when fitting the breakthrough curves we were able to compute a dispersion coefficient even in the case where the REV of the water saturation is larger than the micromodel. Consequently, the knowledge of the local concentration profiles as a function of time is necessary as it provides an additional information on the spatio-temporal behavior of the transport process and therefor a supplementary constraint of the fitting procedure. Finally, we observed a time dependent dispersion coefficient in the regime where oil ganglia comprise several pores. This fact might be attributed to the non-Gaussian nature of the transport.

To make efficient use of image-based rock physics workflow, it is necessary to optimize different criteria, among which: quantity, representativeness, size and resolution. Advances in artificial intelligence give insights of databases potential. Deep learning methods not only enable to classify rock images, but could also help to estimate their petrophysical properties. In this study we prepare a set of thousands high-resolution 3D images captured in a set of four reservoir rock samples as a base for learning and training. The Voxilon software computes numerical petrophysical analysis. We identify different descriptors directly from 3D images used as inputs. We use convolutional neural network modelling with supervised training using TensorFlow framework. Using approximately fifteen thousand 2D images to drive the classification network, the test on thousand unseen images shows any error of rock type misclassification. The porosity trend provides good fit between digital benchmark datasets and machine learning tests. In a few minutes, database screening classifies carbonates and sandstones images and associates the porosity values and distribution. This work aims at conveying the potential of deep learning method in reservoir characterization to petroleum research, to illustrate how a smart image-based rock physics database at industrial scale can swiftly give access to rock properties.

Some of the world best hydrocarbon reservoirs (carbonates and siliciclastics) are also believed to be valuable for subsurface storage of CO2 and other fluids. Yet, these reservoirs are heterogeneous in terms of their mineralogy and flow properties, at varying spatial-temporal scales. Therefore, predicting the porosity and permeability (flow properties) evolution of carbonates and sandstones remains a tedious task. Diagenesis refers to the alteration of sedimentary rocks through geologic time, mainly due to rock-fluid interactions. It affects primarily the flow properties (porosity and permeability) of already heterogeneous reservoir rocks. In this project a new approach is proposed to calculate/quantify the influence of diagenetic phases (e.g. dissolution, cement plugging) on flow properties of typical sandstone reservoir rocks (Early Jurassic Luxembourg Formation). A series of laboratory experiments are performed in which diagenetic phases (e.g. pore blocking calcite cement in sandstone) are selectively leached from pre-studied samples, with the quantification of the petrophysical characteristics with and without cement to especially infer permeability evolution. Poorly and heavily calcite-cemented sandstone samples, as well as some intermediate cemented samples were used. The results show a distinctive dissolution pattern for different cementation grades and varying Representative Elementary Volumes (REVs). These conclusions have important consequences for upscaling diagenesis effects on reservoirs, and the interpretation of geochemical modelling results of diagenetic processes. The same approach can be applied on other type of cements and host-rocks, and could be improved by integrating other petrophysical analyses (e.g. petroacoustic, NMR).

The microstructure of oil sand samples extracted at a depth of 75 m from the estuarine Middle McMurray Formation (Alberta, Canada) has been investigated using high resolution three-dimensional (3D) X-ray microtomography (µ CT) and cryo scanning electron microscopy (CryoSEM). µCT images evidenced some dense areas composed of highly angular grains surrounded by fluids, which are separated by larger pores full of gas. In dense areas, 3D image analysis provided porosity values comparable with in situ log data and macroscopic laboratory determinations, showing that they are representative of intact states. µCT hence provided some information on the morphology of the cracks and disturbance created by gas expansion. The CryoSEM technique, in which the sample is freeze fractured within the SEM chamber prior to observation, provided pictures in which the (frozen) bitumen clearly appears between the sand grains. No evidence of the existence of a thin connate water layer between grains and the bitumen, frequently mentioned in the literature, has been obtained. Bitumen appears to strongly adhere to the grains, with some grains being completely coated. The curved shape of some bitumen menisci suggests a bitumen wet behaviour. La microstructure d'echantillons de sables bitumineux extraits a une profondeur de 75 m dans la formation d'estuaire McMurray (Alberta, Canada) a ete etudiee par microtomographie ([micron]CT) par rayons-X en trois dimensions (3D) a haute resolution, et par cryo-microscopie electronique a balayage (CryoMEB). Les images de [micron]CT ont mis en evidence des zones denses composees de grains tres angulaires entoures de fluides et separes par des grands pores contenant du gaz. L'analyse d' image en 3D des zones denses a fourni des valeurs de porosite compatibles avec des donnees de forage in situ et des determinations macroscopiques au laboratoire, ce qui demontre qu'elles sont representatives des etats intacts. La [micron]CT offer ainsi des informations sur la morphologie des fissures et des perturbations crees par l'expansion des gaz. La technique de CryoMEB, dans laquelle l'echantillon est fracture a l'etat congele a l'interieur de la chambre du MEB avant l'observation, permet d'obtenir des images ou le bitume (congele) apparait clairement entre les grains de sable. Aucune evidence de l' existence d' une fine couche d' eau connee entre les grains et le bitume, frequemment mentionnee dans la bibliographie, n' est obtenue. Le bitume semble adherer fortement aux grains, et certains grains sont completement enrobes. La forme courbe de certains menisques de bitume suggere que le bitume a un comportement mouillant.
