Training and prototype development in robotassisted surgery requires appropriate and safe environments for the execution of surgical procedures. Current dry lab laparoscopy phantoms often lack the ability to mimic complex, interactive surgical tasks. This work presents an interactive surgical phantom for the cholecystectomy. The phantom enables the removal of the gallbladder during cholecystectomy by allowing manipulations and cutting interactions with the synthetic tissue. The force-displacement behavior of the gallbladder is modelled based on retraction demonstrations. The force model is compared to the force model of ex-vivo porcine gallbladders and evaluated on its ability to estimate retraction forces.

Robotic assistance systems are being used more and more frequently in the operating room, with the goal to support surgeons and to automate parts of a procedure. The laparoscopic cholecystectomy is one of the most common procedures in Germany.We aim to automate the assistant grasp task in this procedure. To achieve this goal, first the grasp points on the gallbladder need to be determined. In this work, we therefore present a statistical shape model fitting to the gallbladder for grasp point determination. Gallbladder and liver point clouds are utilized as inputs. A registration algorithm is used to fit the shape model to the gallbladder mesh. The process is evaluated on three different datasets achieving a successful grasping point identification of 90% for artificially created gallbladders, 100% for our silicon phantom model, and 90% for ex-vivo organs.

The entire investigation's focus was on the production of nickel oxide nanoparticles (NiONPs), using prodigiosin pigments produced by Serratia marcescens as a stabilizing and reducing agent. Nickel oxide nanoparticles are synthesized using nickel sulfate NiSO4 (10mg) with a concentration of prodigiosin (10g/100ml). Biosynthesized NiO nanoparticles have been characterized by using many techniques, such as (UV-Vis, AFM, XRD, FTIR, and FE-SEM). The AFM analysis revealed that NiONPs have an average diameter size of (41.77 mm), and the FE-SEM Image displays Spherical. Additionally, the effect of NiONPs with different concentrations on the bacteria Pseudomonas aeruginosa was measured and the inhibition zone reached to (29 mm). Biosynthesis of NiONPs using prodigiosin was shown to have promising activity as an antibacterial against the biofilmproducing Pseudomonas aeruginosa. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The pandemic of obesity and other diet-related non-communicable diseases are serious threats to the wellbeing and financial prosperity around the globe. It has been documented that the consumption of processed foods with high levels of refined sugars and fats are the main cause contributing to this phenomenon. The present work was therefore conducted to assess the effects of the consumption of non-dairy tea whiteners (NDTW's) on lipid profile, histopathology, and liver enzymes of rats for a period of three months. To this end, 30 albino Wister rats (7 weeks old, 130 ± 5 g) was divided into five groups namely control (G1), fed with whole milk (G2), and groups fed with defined dose of commercial NDTW's (G3, G4, and G5). All rats were provided feed and water ad libitum during the experimental period. At trial completion, the rats were decapitated, and samples (blood, liver) were collected and subjected to blood chemistry (lipid profile) and liver histopathological analyses. Results indicated that as compared to milk, powder NDTW consumption increased the level of cholesterol (69%), triglycerides (98%), and LDL (84%), whereas HDL was non-significantly affected. On the other hand, liquid NDTW consumption led to the increase in triglyceride levels for all NDTW, and yielded 130% increase as compared to milk, which might have been attributed to composition of NDTW. Additionally, liver and renal functional tests yielded non-significant results. The present work concluded that the consumption of NDTW contributed towards derangement and elevation in lipid profile parameters as compared to milk, particularly if consumed for longer period of time. Thus, exploring patients’ perceptions and attitudes towards this interaction should be thoroughly investigated, to better understand it and to provide evidence-based data for improving the training of future doctors.Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted at Jordan University Hospital. A questionnaire was answered by 420 patients from the out-patients’ clinics.Results: Of the patients interviewed, 94% were aware that they were in a teaching hospital, 92% approved the presence of medical students during their consultation and 80% accepted to be observed and examined by medical students in the presence of a senior doctor. However, this decreased to 30.5% if there was no senior doctor. Almost 83% of the patients believed that their consent should be obtained first. However, only 58% of them indicated that the student asked for consent prior to interacting with them. Patients who were more likely to approve the existence of medical students during consultation and allow students to perform procedures on them, respectively, were those who were asked for consent by students (P = 0.001 and P = 0.021), considered seeing medical students’ enjoyable (P < 0.001 and P < 0.001), thought that their privacy was not violated (P < 0.001 and P < 0.001), and were provided with useful information about their health problems (P < 0.001 and P < 0.001).Conclusion: Patients showed an overall positive stance towards the involvement of medical students in their healthcare. The majority were delighted to see medical students while some expressed concerns over their privacy due to the large number of students and because several students do not ask for their consent. The point of this study was for determine of the optimum conditions and purification of alginate lyase from local isolate of Pseudomonas aeruginosa NA11, and inhibition of enzyme by various plant extracts. Forty local isolate s of pathogenic Pseudomonas aeruginosa were screened for their ability to produce alginate lyase. Local isolate of P.aeruginosa NA11 showed the maximum efficiency for produce of alginate lyase with high specific activity (14.4 U/mg). Several factors that influence on alginate lyase production from local isolate of P.aeruginosa NA11 were studied, these factors included the type of media, carbon source, nitrogen source, the incubation temperature, pH, and the incubation period. The highest yield of alginate lyase was obtained with the A medium supplemented with 0.5 % of glucose and sodium nitrate at pH 7.5 after 24 hr. incubation at 37 °C. Two chromatographic techniques were used for purification of alginate lyase after precipitation by ammonium sulphate with saturated ratio (0-70 %), including, ion exchange chromatography by DEAE-cellulose and gel filtration by Sephadex G- 100. The two steps gave the specific activity of 155.8 U/mg protein, the purification fold was 4.15 and enzymatic yield was 64 %. The molecular weight of partial purified alginate lyase was 57 KDa. The results of antioxidant activity tests for different plants extracts utilizing DPPH radical scavenging activity were showed that the saad extract has high antioxidant activity (71 %) more than other plants extracts. While the results for inhibition experiment of alginate lyase were demonstrated that saad extract was the best inhibitor with inhibition ratio of 86 %. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This research project was designed to assess the antibacterial and antitcancer activity by using the crude extracts of fresh and dried peels of Annona squamosa fruit. The fresh and dried peels were extracted by using three solvents, inculded (water, ethanol, and methanol) at different concentrations (stock, 50, 25, 12.5, 6.25) μg/ml. The antibacterial activity was estimated against Gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus) and Gram - negative bacteria (Pseudomonas aeruginosa) using agar well-diffusion method. Results showed the appearance of different regions of inhibition. Antibacterial activity of alcoholic solvent extracts of the dry and fresh peels showed noticeable inhibitory activity against both tested bacteria when comparing the last one with the aqueous extract of peels. The results of anticancer activity estimation against two hematological blood cancer cell lines showed that the three solvents for fresh and dried peels caused a remarkable inhibitory effects and the ethanolic extracts of dried peels was the best. This encourage for the possibility of using peels extracts of Annona. squamosa as a natural resources for growth inhibiting of different types of bacteria and cancer cells. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Minimally invasive surgery is the standard for many abdominal interventions, with an increasing use of telemanipulated robots. As collaborative robots enter the field of medical interventions, their intuitive control needs to be addressed. Augmented reality can thereby support a surgeon by representing the surgical scene in a natural way. In this work, an augmented reality based robot control for laparoscopic cholecystectomy is presented. A user can interact with the virtual scene to clip the cystic duct and artery as well as to manipulate the deformable gallbladder. An evaluation was performed based on the SurgTLX and system usability scale.
