International audience; Wetlands are the largest natural source of methane (CH4) to the atmosphere. The eddy covariance method provides robust measurements of net ecosystem exchange of CH4, but interpreting its spatiotemporal variations is challenging due to the co-occurrence of CH4 production, oxidation, and transport dynamics. Here, we estimate these three processes using a data-model fusion approach across 25 wetlands in temperate, boreal, and Arctic regions. Our data-constrained model—iPEACE—reasonably reproduced CH4 emissions at 19 of the 25 sites with normalized root mean square error of 0.59, correlation coefficient of 0.82, and normalized standard deviation of 0.87. Among the three processes, CH4 production appeared to be the most important process, followed by oxidation in explaining inter-site variations in CH4 emissions. Based on a sensitivity analysis, CH4 emissions were generally more sensitive to decreased water table than to increased gross primary productivity or soil temperature. For periods with leaf area index (LAI) of ≥20% of its annual peak, plant-mediated transport appeared to be the major pathway for CH4 transport. To what extent plants thermoregulate their canopy temperature (Tc) in response to environmental variability is a fundamental question in ecology, and influences accurate projections of plants' metabolic response and resilience to climate change. However, debate remains, with opinions ranging from no to moderate plant thermoregulation capacities. Traditionally, it has been hypothesized that if plant thermoregulation occurs (i.e. ‘limited homeothermy’ hypothesis holds): 1) Tc will change more slowly than Ta over time, leading the Tcvs. Ta regression slope < 1; 2) Tc is cooler than Ta when Ta exceeds some threshold, typically during high net radiation conditions (e.g. at midday). Here, with global datasets of Tc, air temperature (Ta), and other environmental and biotic variables from FLUXNET and satellites, we tested the ‘limited homeothermy’ hypothesis across global extratropics, including temporal and spatial dimensions. Our results demonstrate that across daily to monthly timescales, over 80% of sites/ecosystems have Tcvs. Ta regression slopes≥1 or Tc>Ta around midday, which rejects the ‘limited homeothermy’ hypothesis. For those sites unsupporting the hypothesis, their Tc-Ta difference (ΔT) still exhibits considerable seasonality that is negatively, partially correlated with their canopy structure seasonality (as indicated by leaf area index), implying a certain degree of thermoregulation capability. Across global sites, both site-mean ΔT and slope indicator exhibit considerable spatial variability, with ΔT having greater variability than the slope indicator. Furthermore, this large spatial ΔT variation (0-6°C) can be mainly explained by environmental variables (38%) and, to a lesser extent, by biological factors (15%). Our results suggested that plant thermoregulation patterns are diverse across global extratropics, with most ecosystems rejecting the ‘limited homeothermy’ hypothesis, but their thermoregulation still occurs, implying that slope

Vegetation cover regulates the exchanges of energy, water and carbon between land and atmosphere. Remotely-sensed fractional absorbed photosynthetically active radiation (fAPAR), a land-surface greenness metric, depends on carbon allocation to foliage while also controlling photon flux for photosynthesis. Greenness is thus both a driver and an outcome of gross primary production (GPP). An equation with just two (globally) fitted parameters describes annual maximum fAPAR (fAPARmax) as the smaller of a water-limited value, transpiring a constant fraction of annual precipitation, and an energy-limited value, maximizing annual plant growth. This minimalist description reproduces global greenness patterns, and the consistent temporal trends among remote-sensing products, as accurately as the best-performing dynamic global vegetation models. Widely observed greening is attributed to the influence of rising carbon dioxide on the light- and water-use efficiencies of GPP, augmented by wetting in some dry regions and warming in high latitudes. Limited regions show browning, attributed to drying.

Methane (CH4) emissions from natural landscapes constitute roughly half of global CH4 contributions to the atmosphere, yet large uncertainties remain in the absolute magnitude and the seasonality of emission quantities and drivers. Eddy covariance (EC) measurements of CH4 flux are ideal for constraining ecosystem-scale CH4 emissions due to quasi-continuous and high-temporal-resolution CH4 flux measurements, coincident carbon dioxide, water, and energy flux measurements, lack of ecosystem disturbance, and increased availability of datasets over the last decade. Here, we (1) describe the newly published dataset, FLUXNET-CH4 Version 1.0, the first open-source global dataset of CH4 EC measurements (available at https://fluxnet.org/data/fluxnet-ch4-community-product/, last access: 7 April 2021). FLUXNET-CH4 includes half-hourly and daily gap-filled and non-gap-filled aggregated CH4 fluxes and meteorological data from 79 sites globally: 42 freshwater wetlands, 6 brackish and saline wetlands, 7 formerly drained ecosystems, 7 rice paddy sites, 2 lakes, and 15 uplands. Then, we (2) evaluate FLUXNET-CH4 representativeness for freshwater wetland coverage globally because the majority of sites in FLUXNET-CH4 Version 1.0 are freshwater wetlands which are a substantial source of total atmospheric CH4 emissions; and (3) we provide the first global estimates of the seasonal variability and seasonality predictors of freshwater wetland CH4 fluxes. Our representativeness analysis suggests that the freshwater wetland sites in the dataset cover global wetland bioclimatic attributes (encompassing energy, moisture, and vegetation-related parameters) in arctic, boreal, and temperate regions but only sparsely cover humid tropical regions. Seasonality metrics of wetland CH4 emissions vary considerably across latitudinal bands. In freshwater wetlands (except those between 20∘ S to 20∘ N) the spring onset of elevated CH4 emissions starts 3 d earlier, and the CH4 emission season lasts 4 d longer, for each degree Celsius increase in mean annual air temperature. On average, the spring onset of increasing CH4 emissions lags behind soil warming by 1 month, with very few sites experiencing increased CH4 emissions prior to the onset of soil warming. In contrast, roughly half of these sites experience the spring onset of rising CH4 emissions prior to the spring increase in gross primary productivity (GPP). The timing of peak summer CH4 emissions does not correlate with the timing for either peak summer temperature or peak GPP. Our results provide seasonality parameters for CH4 modeling and highlight seasonality metrics that cannot be predicted by temperature or GPP (i.e., seasonality of CH4 peak). FLUXNET-CH4 is a powerful new resource for diagnosing and understanding the role of terrestrial ecosystems and climate drivers in the global CH4 cycle, and future additions of sites in tropical ecosystems and site years of data collection will provide added value to this database. Ground reference data are an essential prerequisite for supervised crop mapping. The lack of a low-cost and efficient ground referencing method results in pervasively limited reference data and hinders crop classification. In this study, we apply a convolutional neural network (CNN) model to explore the efficacy of automatic ground truthing via Google Street View (GSV) images in two distinct farming regions: Illinois and the Central Valley in California. We demonstrate the feasibility and reliability of our new ground referencing technique by performing pixel-based crop mapping at the state level using the cloud-based Google Earth Engine platform. The mapping results are evaluated using the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) crop data layer (CDL) products. From ~ 130,000 GSV images, the CNN model identified ~ 9,400 target crop images. These images are well classified into crop types, including alfalfa, almond, corn, cotton, grape, rice, soybean, and pistachio. The overall GSV image classification accuracy is 92% for the Central Valley and 97% for Illinois. Subsequently, we shifted the image geographical coordinates 2–3 times in a certain direction to produce 31,829 crop reference points: 17,358 in Illinois, and 14,471 in the Central Valley. Evaluation of the mapping results with CDL products revealed satisfactory coherence. GSV-derived mapping results capture the general pattern of crop type distributions for 2011–2019. The overall agreement between CDL products and our mapping results is indicated by R2 values of 0.44–0.99 for the Central Valley and 0.81–0.98 for Illinois. To show the applicational value of the proposed method in other countries, we further mapped rice paddy (2014–2018) in South Korea which yielded fairly well outcomes (R2 = 0.91). These results indicate that GSV images used with a deep learning model offer an efficient and cost-effective alternative method for ground referencing, in many regions of the world.

The increasing frequency and amplitude of extreme climatic events may decline ecosystem productivity and disturb the global carbon cycle. Recent and upcoming advances in remote sensing technology, such as hyperspectral reflectance and chlorophyll sun-induced fluorescence (SIF) missions, are boosting research on the monitoring of vegetation responses to heat and drought stress. To understand the impacts of stress on vegetation and the corresponding optical signals that can be sensed from space, it is essential to monitor the continuous dynamics of ecosystem carbon and water fluxes and optical signal responses to environmental changes on the ground.We collected a unique dataset of synergistic observations of remote sensing and carbon-water flux measurements from multiple field sites of different vegetation types. This dataset elucidated variations of physiology, fluxes, and optical signals, including SIF and spectral vegetation indices. For example, in light-sensitive beech forests in Germany, we found that photoprotection is generally active. Gross primary productivity (GPP) and surface conductance (Gs) clearly decreased when heatwaves occurred. On the contrary, chlorophyll content changed only marginally, which was reflected by minimal changes in the chlorophyll index at red edge (CIred). The photochemical reflectance index (PRI), related to non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) via xanthophyll´s cycle, was sensitive to flash heat stress and related to vapor pressure deficit (VPD). But for longer and lower intensity of stress in another event, PRI only changed marginally. SIF was more sensitive to incident radiation (PPFD), but did not decrease with increasing air temperature (Ta) and VPD. However, SIF yield (the ratio of SIF and absorbed photosynthetically active radiation) decreased significantly during the heatwave. In contrast, in the light and heat-tolerant rice paddy in China, we observed that vegetation did not show negative effects at the early growing stage (nutritive growth) during an extreme heatwave (Ta>35 ̊C). Due to the high relative humidity (from evaporated water), VPD remained low despite the high temperatures. GPP increased slightly accompanied by a small decrease of Gs as VPD slightly increased. SIF, SIF yield, and PRI noticeably increased with increasing CIred, indicating that heat might have accelerated the physiology rather than stressed plants in the rice paddy, which could be due to an overall higher temperature optimum compared to the European beach forest.Our results demonstrate that water supply shortage combined with heat waves can cause immediate down-regulation of photosynthesis and that the new remote sensing missions could detect this vegetation response. However, if the water supply is abundant during the heatwave, responses of both physiological and remote sensing parameters may not be sensitive to heat stress. Due to species and ecosystem differences in terms of heat resistance, the global response of vegetation remains hard to predict indicating the need to remotely monitor these responses in order to improve process-based models. The outcomes of this work will possibly provide new insights on the utilization of novel optical remote sensing information for vegetation monitoring during extreme events.

Mapping canopy photosynthesis in both high spatial and temporal resolution is essential for carbon cycle monitoring in heterogeneous areas. However, well established satellites in sun-synchronous orbits such as Sentinel-2, Landsat and MODIS can only provide either high spatial or high temporal resolution but not both. Recently established CubeSat satellite constellations have created an opportunity to overcome this resolution trade-off. In particular, Planet Fusion allows full utilization of the CubeSat data resolution and coverage while maintaining high radiometric quality. In this study, we used the Planet Fusion surface reflectance product to calculate daily, 3-m resolution, gap-free maps of the near-infrared radiation reflected from vegetation (NIRvP). We then evaluated the performance of these NIRvP maps for estimating canopy photosynthesis by comparing with data from a flux tower network in Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, California, USA. Overall, NIRvP maps captured temporal variations in canopy photosynthesis of individual sites, despite changes in water extent in the wetlands and frequent mowing in the crop fields. When combining data from all sites, however, we found that robust agreement between NIRvP maps and canopy photosynthesis could only be achieved when matching NIRvP maps to the flux tower footprints. In this case of matched footprints, NIRvP maps showed considerably better performance than in situ NIRvP in estimating canopy photosynthesis both for daily sum and data around the time of satellite overpass (R 2 = 0.78 vs. 0.60, for maps vs. in situ for the satellite overpass time case). This difference in performance was mostly due to the higher degree of consistency in slopes of NIRvP -canopy photosynthesis relationships across the study sites for flux tower footprint-matched maps. Our results show the importance of matching satellite observations to the flux tower footprint and demonstrate the potential of CubeSat constellation imagery to monitor canopy photosynthesis remotely at high spatio-temporal resolution.

Although rice cultivation is one of the most important agricultural sources of methane (CH4) and contributes ∼8% of total global anthropogenic emissions, large discrepancies remain among estimates of global CH4 emissions from rice cultivation (ranging from 18 to 115 Tg CH4 yr−1) due to a lack of observational constraints. The spatial distribution of paddy-rice emissions has been assessed at regional-to-global scales by bottom-up inventories and land surface models over coarse spatial resolution (e.g., > 0.5°) or spatial units (e.g., agro-ecological zones). However, high-resolution CH4 flux estimates capable of capturing the effects of local climate and management practices on emissions, as well as replicating in situ data, remain challenging to produce because of the scarcity of high-resolution maps of paddy-rice and insufficient understanding of CH4 predictors. Here, we combine paddy-rice methane-flux data from 23 global eddy covariance sites and MODIS remote sensing data with machine learning to 1) evaluate data-driven model performance and variable importance for predicting rice CH4 fluxes; and 2) produce gridded up-scaling estimates of rice CH4 emissions at 5000-m resolution across Monsoon Asia, where ∼87% of global rice area is cultivated and ∼ 90% of global rice production occurs. Our random-forest model achieved Nash-Sutcliffe Efficiency values of 0.59 and 0.69 for 8-day CH4 fluxes and site mean CH4 fluxes respectively, with land surface temperature, biomass and water-availability-related indices as the most important predictors. We estimate the average annual (winter fallow season excluded) paddy rice CH4 emissions throughout Monsoon Asia to be 20.6 ± 1.1 Tg yr−1 for 2001–2015, which is at the lower range of previous inventory-based estimates (20–32 CH4 Tg yr−1). Our estimates also suggest that CH4 emissions from paddy rice in this region have been declining from 2007 through 2015 following declines in both paddy-rice growing area and emission rates per unit area, suggesting that CH4 emissions from paddy rice in Monsoon Asia have likely not contributed to the renewed growth of atmospheric CH4 in recent years.

Carbon (C) and greenhouse gas (GHG) research has traditionally required data collection and analysis using advanced and often expensive instruments, complex and proprietary software, and highly specialized research technicians. Partly as a result, relatively little C and GHG research has been conducted in resource-constrained developing countries. At the same time, these are often the same countries and regions in which climate change impacts will likely be strongest and in which major science uncertainties are centered, given the importance of dryland and tropical systems to the global C cycle. Increasingly, scientific communities have adopted appropriate technology and approach (AT&A) for C and GHG research, which focuses on low-cost and low-technology instruments, open-source software and data, and participatory and networking-based research approaches. Adopting AT&A can mean acquiring data with fewer technical constraints and lower economic burden and is thus a strategy for enhancing C and GHG research in developing countries. However, AT&A can have higher uncertainties; these can often be mitigated by carefully designing experiments, providing clear protocols for data collection, and monitoring and validating the quality of obtained data. For implementing this approach in developing countries, it is first necessary to recognize the scientific and moral importance of AT&A. At the same time, new AT&A techniques should be identified and further developed. All these processes should be promoted in collaboration with local researchers and through training local staff and encouraged for wide use and further innovation in developing countries.

The validity of scientific results relies on the quality of data used and data are often subject to change, for example, due to observation additions, quality assessments, or processing software updates. The effects of data change are not well understood and difficult to predict. Datasets are often repeatedly updated and recomputing derived data products quickly becomes time consuming and resource intensive and may in some cases not even be necessary, thus delaying scientific advance. Despite its importance, there is a lack of systematic approaches for best comparing data versions to quantify the changes, and ad-hoc or manual processes are commonly used. In this article, we propose a novel hierarchical approach for analyzing data changes, including real-time (online) and offline analyses. We employ a variety of fast-to-compute numerical analyses, graphical data change representations, and more resource-intensive recomputations of a subset of the data product. We illustrate the application of our approach using three scientific diverse use cases, namely, satellite, cosmological, and x-ray data. The results show that a variety of data change metrics should be employed to enable a comprehensive representation and qualitative evaluation of data changes.

Quantifying global terrestrial photosynthesis is essential to understanding the global carbon cycle and the climate system. Remote sensing has played a pivotal role in advancing our understanding of photosynthesis from leaf to global scale; however, substantial uncertainties still exist. In this review, we provide a historical overview of theory, modeling, and observations of photosynthesis across space and time for decadal intervals beginning in the 1950s. Then we identify the key uncertainties in global photosynthesis estimates, including evaluating light intercepted by canopies, biophysical forcings, the structure of light use efficiency models and their parameters, like photosynthetic capacity, and relationships between sun-induced chlorophyll fluorescence and canopy photosynthesis. Finally, we review new opportunities with big data and recently launched or planned satellite missions.

International audience; Global vegetation and land-surface models embody interdisciplinary scientific understanding of the behaviour of plants and ecosystems, and are indispensable to project the impacts of environmental change on vegetation and the interactions between vegetation and climate. However, systematic errors and persistently large differences among carbon and water cycle projections by different models highlight the limitations of current process formulations. In this review, focusing on core plant functions in the terrestrial carbon and water cycles, we show how unifying hypotheses derived from eco-evolutionary optimality (EEO) principles can provide novel, parameter-sparse representations of plant and vegetation processes. We present case studiesthat demonstrate how EEO generate parsimonious representations of core, leaf-level processes that are individually testable and supported by evidence. EEO approaches to photosynthesis and primary production, dark respiration, and stomatal behaviour are ripe for implementation in global models. EEO approaches to other important traits, including the leaf economics spectrum and applications of EEO at the community level are active research areas. Independently tested modules emerging from EEO studies could profitably be integrated into modelling frameworks that account for the multiple time scales on which plants and plant communities adjust toenvironmental change.
